Russian sources provided explanations for claimed Russian successes during the June 8 attacks, praising Russian forces’ effective use of electronic warfare (EW) systems, air support, and landmines against Ukrainian forces. Multiple Russian sources reported that Russian EW severely interfered with Ukrainian command and control signals, GPS-enabled devices, UAV controls.[12] Russian sources reported that Ukrainian forces had insufficient air defense in the Orikhiv sector, that Russian forces operated with an “unprecedented” amount of rotary wing air support, and that Russian aviation was able to return to a high level of activity after not actively engaging in combat operations since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in 2022.[13] Continuous Russian missile and drone attacks against Kyiv and critical Ukrainian infrastructure may have fixed Ukraine’s more advanced air defense systems away from the frontline, although ISW cannot assess which systems would be effective against the kinds of air support missions Russian aircraft were flying.

Huh? ISW can't assess wha kind of system would be effective against drones, helicopters and fixed-wing air support? Or is it that they can't figure out what would work against a barrage of drones, cruise missiles and hypersonic missiles?

Quote:

ISW’s previous assessments that Russian air and missile attacks were not setting conditions to defend against the Ukrainian counter-offensive may thus have been inaccurate.

Then they were STUPID. EVERYONE could see- and was commenting on- the fact that Russia had ramped up its targeting of rail lines, ammo depots, fuel depots, and air defense insallations for the past 3 weeks at least, with "massive" (that seems to be the word most often used recently) drone, missile and bombs strikes. Even Military Summary Channel, which has a definite bent towards Ukraine.

Quote:

Russian sources also praised at length their claimed defensive success using layered field fortifications and landmines, with Major General Popov stating that Russian minefields played a “very important role” in defeating the initial Ukrainian advance in the early hours of June 8.[14] CNN additionally reported that an anonymous US official said that Russian landmines degraded Ukrainian armored vehicles.[15]
echelon defense. Wasn't gonna post about it bc it would have taken too much time to explain. The other thing that Russians do is create "crumple zones" ... they take areas of open field which Ukrainian army has to re-take, Once the Ukrainian army is in a relatively undefendable position, Russian troops fall back and Russian artillery, drones etc open up.

Quote:

Russian forces appear to have executed their formal tactical defensive doctrine in response to the Ukrainian attacks southwest of Orikhiv. Russian doctrine for a defending motorized rifle battalion calls for a first echelon of troops to repel or slow attacking forces with minefields, fortifications, and strongpoints, with a second echelon of forces counterattacking against an enemy breakthrough.[16] Russian forces apparently operated in this fashion in this sector – Ukrainian forces penetrated the initial defensive lines; Russian forces pulled back to a second line of fortifications; and Russian reserves subsequently counterattacked to retake the initial line of defenses.[17] This maneuver is a regular feature of defensive operations and has been executed by both Ukrainian and Russian forces throughout the war. Early control of terrain changes day to day should thus not be misconstrued as the overall result of a wider attack.

There are several ways to interpret that last statement, but in the context of Ukrainian attacker/Russian defender, I would say that it means that even if Ukrainian troops advance a few or even a few tens of kilometers, that doesn't mean they will be victorious since Russian defenses are DESIGNED to give up territory in exchange for inflicting losses.

I think, FYI, that Kiev had been threatening the Kakhova dam for over a year, discussing how to mine it and even taking a few practice HIMARS shots at it. That's the reason why Surovikin withdrew troops to the eastern side of the Dneiper- he was afraid that Kiev was going to flood the area. And Kiev had been saying for WEEKS that they were going to launch an attack that would confuse and panic the Russian military.

I wondered what that would be: A "dirty bomb"? A successful attack on ZNPP? Successful attacks into pre-22 Russia or Crimea? I think breaking the dam was their magnum opus.

Anyway, if early territorial gains or losses don't determine the outcome of the war, WHAT DOES?

The number of troops and the amount of weaponry an army can bring to bear in the long run. "Tactics decide battles, logistics decides the war".

Tick tock applies here. It stands for a countdown, just as it did in the countdown until Trump is impeached thread, which he was, twice. Another thread was until Trump was indicted. Well, now he has been. And Tuesday next week, he will be arrested again on different charges. And I'll give you a hint, there is more to come after that. Too funny...

In the Ukraine thread, it represents a countdown to when things get so bad for Russia, you can no longer blow it off as lies. You will be forced to acknowledge Ukraine kicked Putin, Russias' ass. That Russia lost.

So, tick tock comrade signym, tick tock

That's the reason why Surovikin withdrew troops to the eastern side of the Dneiper- he was afraid that Kiev was going to flood the area. And Kiev had been saying for WEEKS that they were going to launch an attack that would confuse and panic the Russian military.

A Russian law passed days before the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine could be a "smoking gun" in proving Russia's involvement in the incident, according to an expert.

On May 30, a week before the dam's collapse, the Russian government approved a law aimed at "ensuring the safety of hydraulic structures" in the Ukrainian regions it proclaimed to have annexed in September 2022—the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, in Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia.

The legislation states that until January 1, 2028, investigations into accidents at hydro-technical structures that occurred as a result of military operations, sabotage and terrorist activities are prohibited. The decree was signed by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and came into effect on the day it was published.

Kremlin Playbook

Keir Giles, senior consulting fellow at the Chatham House think tank's Russia and Eurasia program, said the May 30 legislation follows the Kremlin's playbook, which seeks "to pretend that it operates according to some semblance of legality."

"Russia has a perverse fascination with performative legalization of its most horrific crimes...it repeatedly puts in place in advance laws that give preemptive excuses for its actions," Giles told Newsweek.

"Sometimes this can give an indication of what is to come," said Giles, pointing to legislation on mass burials that was updated by Russia ahead of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine and came into effect on February 1, 2022—weeks before the war began.

"So in the case of the destruction of the Kakhovka dam, the passing a week beforehand of this bizarrely specific law covering precisely those circumstances is indeed a clear indication of Russian intent," Giles added.

Newsweek reached out to the Russian Foreign Ministry via email for comment.

Anders Åslund, an economist and adjunct professor at Georgetown University, Washington, DC, said the May 30 decree "only concludes what we already knew."

"Russian propagandists advocated blowing up the dam. Ukrainian officials announced last fall that the Russians had mined both the dam and the connected tunnels in October-November 2022," Åslund, who has served as an economic adviser to the governments of both Russia and Ukraine, told Newsweek.

"Several explosions were recorded, which show that they were underwater, while the Russians claimed that the Ukrainians had bombed it from the air, which seems close to impossible for technical reasons. The explosions occurred on the Russian side.

"The Russians followed up blowing up several smaller dams — recorded by the Ukrainians. And now you have this law," he said, adding: "The evidence seems overwhelming that it was the Russians who did it."

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on June 9 that Russia will begin deploying tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus in July 2023.[84] Putin met with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in Sochi, Russia, and stated that the necessary Belarusian storage facilities will finish construction on July 7 and 8, after which Russia will begin transferring tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus. Putin emphasized that the deployment of Russian weapons on Belarusian territory is proceeding according to plan. Putin’s announcement does not represent an escalation in prior Russian nuclear weapons rhetoric, and Russia remains unlikely to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, as ISW has previously assessed.[85] Putin’s announcement is also very unlikely to require a change in NATO’s nuclear posture.

There are three primary defenses of Donald Trump coming from Trumptards:

• Trump didn't sell any of the documents, destroy or alter any documents, or give them away. So how bad can it be?
• Hillary did it too.
• DOJ and the FBI are corrupt and have been weaponized against Trump.

None of these even remotely address the actual charges against Trump: that he took classified documents with him when he left the White House and then actively withheld them even after National Archives and Records Administration and the FBI repeatedly demanded their return.

But Republicans just don't care. They don't care about January 6, 2021. They don't care about Trump’s Big Lie that he won in 2020. They don't care that Trump tried to extort Ukraine for dirt on Joe Biden. No matter what, Trump is being unfairly victimized. That's the alpha and omega. The facts don't matter and never will.

Trump's lawyers quit because he is guilty and now they know it from evidence in the indictment:

Jim Trusty and John Rowley, who helmed Trump’s Washington, D.C.-based legal team for months and were seen frequently at the federal courthouse, indicated they would no longer represent Trump in matters being investigated and prosecuted by special counsel Jack Smith, who is probing both the documents matter and efforts by Trump to subvert the 2020 election.

The FBI’s attempt to ban Twitter accounts at the request of Ukrainian intelligence is among the most overt requests for censorship revealed to date in the Twitter Files.

Brave Trumptards claimed to have bone spurs to avoid being drafted.

In the fall of 1968, Donald J. Trump received a timely diagnosis of bone spurs in his heels that led to his medical exemption from the military during Vietnam. For 50 years, the details of how the exemption came about, and who made the diagnosis, have remained a mystery until now! Two daughters of a New York podiatrist say that 50 years ago their father diagnosed President Donald Trump with bone spurs in his heels as a favor to the doctor's landlord, Fred Trump.

The world would be a better if Trump had to risk death fleeing to Canada to avoid the draft.

"Trying to descend, (Ukrainian draft dodger) Dima lost his balance in the wind and ice, and hurtled down the mountain, losing his boots, his phone, and one of his socks." Dima must be his nickname for being a dimwit.

Four million Ukrainians were murdered by Russians in what Ukrainians call Holodomor. If there was a next time because Ukrainians don't fight the Russians right now, the death toll can be even higher. Ukrainians understand what the Russians will do to them and that's why they fight back.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday announced he will start deploying tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus on July 7-8, which falls days before a NATO summit in neighboring Lithuania.

The timing of the announcement was not lost on some officials, including Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.

"This is nothing but a crude game of intimidation, trying to bully Europe into submission," Tsikhanouskaya tweeted. "We can't let dictators get away with their nuclear blackmail."

If Russian tactical nukes in Belarus are a threat to Europe, what are American nuclear weapons in Europe?

Quote:

The United States has deployed nuclear weapons at NATO bases in Western Europe since the 1950s, when Cold War tensions were mounting with the Soviet Union. The weapons were first transferred to the United Kingdom in 1954, and later to Germany, Italy, France, Turkey, the Netherlands, Greece, and Belgium...
Today, U.S. tactical nuclear weapons remain at six bases in five NATO member countries, Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Turkey. The UK and France have their own nuclear forces and no longer host U.S. weapons.

Signym, expand that sentence: If Russian tactical nukes in Belarus are a threat to Europe, what are French and British nuclear weapons in Europe? Answer: Not A Threat because Britain did not threaten to nuke Paris and France did not threaten to nuke London. Meanwhile, Russia has threatened in 2023 to nuke Paris, London, Berlin, Warsaw, Helsinki, you name it, Putin threatened to nuke it. Now do see what is different, Signym?

By the way, Russia has been threatening to nuke the West since it first got nukes. To dissuade Russia from turning its threats into reality, the US has spent over $10 trillion on nukes. Because Russia keeps making newer and bizarre threats to nuke the West, the US is projected to spend a total of $634 billion over the 2021–2030 period on nukes. Ukraine would be doing the West a huge favor if it can stop Russia from making these endless threats to nuke the West.

You can't possibly be THAT stupid, SECOND, so I'll take this as just another attempt to weasel out of your failed position.

But since THUR might actually be that stupid, I'm gonna explain to make it pellucidly clear.

If we see nukes positioned in Belarus as a threat to Europe, then the USSR, and now Russia, would have seen western nukes positioned in Europe as threats.

So if we want to point fingers at "who started it", clearly the USA started threatening first by positioning nukes in many nations in Europe, and Russia's action is just a decades-delayed response.

Capisce?

Signym, have you never been around people with handguns in holsters? Or carrying rifles? There is a big difference between a gunman with a loaded weapon who says he will kill you and all your family and one who does NOT make that threat. Russia has been loudly threatening with words to kill everybody and their families since Russia first got nukes. France and Britain and China, all nuclear powers, have never raised their voices and made a verbal threat. Russia has officially spoken about that threat thousands of times. Unofficially, from Russian State TV and propaganda, Russia has made that threat millions of times. Putin made the threats many times since invading Ukraine.

Try for once in your life, Signym, to understand the difference between using words threatening to nuke everybody and NOT threatening to nuke anybody. I don't think you will get the subtleties because then you would realize what Russia has been doing wrong since its first above-ground A-bomb tests.

Russian milbloggers continue to highlight reported superior Russian electronic warfare (EW) capabilities as key to disrupting Ukrainian attacks. Russian milbloggers claimed that Russian EW units are disrupting Ukrainian communications as well as aviation units and alleged that some Ukrainian mechanized groups were not prepared to fight without communications or with suppressed GPS.[10] Another milblogger claimed that Ukrainian forces attempted their own “electronic counter measures” against Russian reconnaissance and control capabilities in areas where there are Ukrainian assaults but that these attempts were unsuccessful.[11] Russian forces have reportedly successfully improved their EW use throughout the invasion of Ukraine.[12]

Russian sources claimed that Ukrainian forces have tactical advantages in conducting assaults at night due to Western-provided equipment with superior night optics systems. A prominent Russian milblogger claimed that Ukrainian forces are launching assaults at night because Western-provided equipment provides Ukrainian forces with “excellent” night vision optics.[13] Zaporizhia Oblast occupation official Vladimir Rogov also claimed that night assaults allow Ukrainian forces to more effectively use Western-provided equipment.[14] Russian sources have widely claimed that Ukrainian forces have started or intensified assaults at night in recent days, and Ukrainian forces may be increasingly leveraging the advantages provided by Western systems.[15]

Russian sources continue to highlight the role of scarce military district-level Russian TOS-1A thermobaric artillery systems against Ukrainian attacks, though Ukrainian forces destroyed at least two of these key systems in recent days. Geolocated footage published on June 8 and 9 confirms that Ukrainian forces have used Western precision munitions (reportedly the Paladin 155mm artillery system) to destroy at least two Russian TOS-1A thermobaric artillery systems – highly destructive but scarce artillery assets controlled at the Russian military district level – in western and eastern Zaporizhia Oblast during the Ukrainian counteroffensive.[16] The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) highlighted the role of Russian thermobaric artillery systems in striking Ukrainian positions on the western Zaporizhia Oblast frontline.[17] A Russian milblogger claimed that Russian thermobaric artillery units have consistently fired on Ukrainian forces on the Donetsk-Zaporizhia Oblast administrative border and in western Zaporizhia Oblast for the past several days and characterized the units as essential to repelling Ukrainian frontal assaults.[18] Russian forces’ apparent reliance on specific artillery assets is noteworthy, as precision Ukrainian strikes on these systems could potentially complicate Russian defensive capabilities and Russian forces are unlikely to possess enough TOS-1A systems to provide the same level of fire support all along the front line.

Ukrainian forces are currently attempting an extraordinarily difficult tactical operation – a frontal assault against prepared defensive positions, further complicated by a lack of air superiority – and these initial assaults should not be extrapolated to predict all Ukrainian operations. Ukrainian forces are unsurprisingly taking casualties in initial attacks against some of the best-prepared Russian forces in Ukraine. However, initial attacks – and particularly selected footage that Russian sources are intentionally disseminating and highlighting – are not representative of all Ukrainian operations. The Russian military remains dangerous and Ukrainian forces certainly face a hard fight, but Ukraine has not yet committed the vast majority of its counteroffensive forces and Russian defenses are not uniformly strong along all sectors of the front line.

Indeed.

The clock ticks for Ukraine and NATO.

According to people who analyze such things, the USA military didn't send its older Bradley fighting vehicles, it sent its newest. And the USA sent its latest version of Patriot missiles. Now the USA is promising MORE multi-billion dollars-worth of Patriot missiles and M777 rockets. (And we probably sent latest-version M777 howitzers and HIMARS too.)

Germany didn't send their older Leopard tanks, the sent their latest version. UK didn't send their oldest version of Challenger 2 tanks, they apparently sent their newest. F-sixteens (apparently a few keys on this keyboard just bonked including the number six) have been promised. And, based on the # of armored vehicles destroyed so far, usa and NATO have sent in far more weapns than we admit. We (USA, NATO) are hemorrhaging weapons into Ukraine.

NATO will meet on Monday to decide what to do with Ukraine. They could decide to speed up Ukraine's accession into NATO. They could decide to send in eastern European (i.e. Polish) troops, which will invetibaly lead to USA boots on the ground. They could just decide to empty their armories and treasuries into Ukraine.

The funny thing is, I have a sneaking suspicion this is all according to Russia's plan (or one them, anyway. Russia apparently doesn't have "a" plan, it has a number of contingencies.)

Russia knows it's not fighting "Ukraine".

To all intents and purposes, Ukraine doesn't even exist anymore except as a source of bodies for NATOs proxy-war weapons. It has no production, it collects no taxes, it would cease to operate the moment the cash flow stopped.

It's easy to see how Russia could demilitarize Ukraine. It was harder to see how Russia could demilitarize NATO. But with NATOs help, it can be done. All NATO needs to do is keep bleeding more and more into its proxy battlefield. Do you recall how Russia refused to close off the cauldron around Bakhmut? Ukraine's obssession with Bakhmut - sending in more and more (mostly untrained) infantry - allowed Russia to successfully conduct what Russians literally called "Operation Meatgrinder'

Russia KNOWS it's fighting NATO. And I suspect that Ukraine is Bakhmut writ large. As long as NATO keeps sending in weapons at a rate slow enough for them to be destroyed, Russia will slowly demilitarize NATO as well as Ukraine. And that seems to be the case. one of the worst things that could happen to Russia right now would be for NATO's sense of self-preservation to kick in, leaving Russia with a security problem to deal with later. And THAT would be a problem, since Russia really really wants those missile installations gone from Poland and Romania, and would prefer to have an excuse to destroy them now in the heat of this battle now, or deal with a depleted and weakened NATO later, than to have to deal later with a NATO that was still armed and manned. Ukraine could be NATO's Vietnam.

Obviously I could be very wrong. Russia's General Staff sure doesn't share their plans with me. Time will tell.

Russia KNOWS it's fighting NATO. And I suspect that Ukraine is Bakhmut writ large.

Millions of Chinese soldiers are "needed" to fight in Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine as Kyiv launches its long-awaited counteroffensive, Russian state TV host Olga Skabeyeva recently said.

As Russia's military grapples with Ukraine's latest attempt at reclaiming occupied land, Skabeyeva, host of the Russian TV program 60 Minutes, offered one solution to bolster its military.

During a recent episode of the show, she called for millions of Chinese troops to join the Russia-Ukraine war. Skabeyeva pointed to the recent battles in Russia's Belgorod region where Putin's forces have reportedly struggled in recent weeks as to why Moscow needs more soldiers.

"Don't dismiss two or three million Chinese soldiers. That's what is needed now. I look at Belgorod region and think how much we lack a Chinese people's liberation army," she said.

Despite this call from Skabeyeva, China has not indicated that it plans to send troops into Russia—which would be viewed as a massive escalation of the conflict.

Newsweek reached out to the Chinese Foreign Ministry for comment via email.

Besides Russia, there is one other country that constantly threatens to nuke the World. That is North Korea, which is impoverished compared to South Korea. Why poorer? For the same reasons as Russia is poor compared to the EU. North Korea is belligerent, spends too much on nukes, and can't run its economy worth a goddamn. An economic comparison between Russia and Canada proves that: https://countryeconomy.com/countries/compare/russia/canada

This is not the first time North Korea has crashed its economy: Estimates of the death toll vary widely. Out of a total population of approximately 22 million, somewhere between 240,000 and 3,500,000 North Koreans died from starvation or hunger-related illnesses, with the deaths peaking in 1997.

Comrade signym uses two types of debate style. One is Whataboutism and the other is, Fallacy of relative privation. Each is a way of avoiding acknowledging a truth within the others post. Can you guess the style she is using here?

The fallacy of relative privation is a way of dismissing or minimizing an argument by claiming that there are more important or worse problems to deal with. It is a type of informal fallacy and a red herring or distraction from the relevant issue.

It is not the same as being thankful or trying to improve one's situation by comparing it to others. A common example of this fallacy is the response "but there are children starving in Africa" to any less serious issue.

Whataboutism, also known as whataboutery, is a rhetorical technique and logical fallacy in which a person responds to a difficult concern or question with a counter-accusation in order to divert attention to a different topic. It involves changing the subject to focus on someone else's misconduct, implying that all criticism is invalid because no one is completely blameless. Whataboutism is typically used when one is charged with a harmful accusation regarding their past actions.

That was Russia UNDER AMERICA? I guess you didn't read the part comparing North Korea to Russia, including both countries constantly threatening to nuke the West. North Korea says that all its problems are caused by America. I don't think the Kim family is correct when they blame the problems they caused in North Korea on America. But then the Kims would have to blame themselves, would they not? Placing the blame where it belongs is not going to happen, whether your name is Kim or Putin/Yeltsin/Gorbachev or Trump/Bush/Cheney/Nixon/Kissinger.

I predict Russia's future will be going in the direction of North Korea rather than prospering like South Korea. I also predict with certainty that Russians will blame the US. What else is freedom of speech for other than to declare yourself not at fault for creating a disappointing future for yourself?

Ukrainian forces made visually verified advances in western Donetsk Oblast and western Zaporizhia Oblast, which Russian sources confirmed but sought to downplay. Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar reported that Ukrainian forces advanced 300 to 1,500 meters in southern Ukraine.[4] Malyar and other Ukrainian and Russian sources reported that Ukrainian forces made gains south of Velyka Novosilka between June 10 and 11, including liberating Makarivka, Neskuchne, Blahodatne, Storozheve, and Novodarivka.[5] Some Russian sources reported that battles are ongoing in “grey zone” or contested areas or that Ukrainian forces are operating in areas that Russian forces did not fully occupy before Ukrainian attacks in southern Ukraine.[6] Russian sources are likely referring to Ukrainian territorial advances through Russian defenses as capturing ”grey zones” in order to downplay Ukrainian gains and omit reporting on Ukrainian forces breaking through defensive lines. Ukrainian forces liberated several towns, but claims of a Ukrainian “breakthrough” are premature at this time.

Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar stated that Russian forces are transferring their most combat-capable units from the Kherson direction to the Bakhmut and Zaporizhia directions. Malyar stated on June 11 that Russian forces are transferring elements of the 49th Combined Arms Army (Southern Military District) and unspecified naval infantry and airborne forces elements from the Kherson direction in connection with the destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant (KHPP) dam.[7] Malyar noted that Russian forces likely blew the KHPP dam in order to shorten their defensive lines in Kherson Oblast as part of the response to the start of the Ukrainian counteroffensive. Flooding downriver of the KHPP has drained the Kakhovka Reservoir, resulting in landmasses emerging from the water. It is unclear how these terrain changes will affect maneuver warfare in southern Ukraine at this time.[8] If the terrain changes from flooding in the Dnipro River do not foreclose any possible Ukrainian river crossings in coming weeks and months, Russian forces may struggle to defend Kherson Oblast with remaining or then-available units if and when Ukrainian forces choose to conduct offensive operations across the river, assuming they have the ability to do so.

Gosh you're stupid!

SECOND; That was Russia UNDER AMERICA?

YES. I guess you had your head stuck up your ass for that decade, when Russia "privatized" per the Chicago School of Economics, and when American and UK "financiers" (like Bill Browder) and Russian bandits made off with Russia's national assets?

Yanno, that decade of lawlessness and bottomless decadence and privation, when Russia's GDP fell by half and the lifespan of Russian men dropped to fifty, as they drank themselves to death in utter hoplessness?

That decade when Russians learned to hate "American style" gangster-capitalism?

THAT decade?

Sig, this video contradicts your claim that Russia suffered due to capitalism. He explains how the Russian GDP doubled every 5 years during the years you say Russians learned to hate America. Once again comrade signym proves herself to be always wrong.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will threaten strikes against NATO member nations over their support for Ukraine, predicted Russia Today (RT) editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan.

Many allies have offered Kyiv billions of dollars in military aid and are credited with helping turn the tide of the war in favor of the Ukrainians. Russia has reacted with anger to this aid, accusing NATO of crossing red lines by providing Ukraine with weapons.

Simonyan said in a new interview that she believes Putin will soon give NATO an "ultimatum" over its aid to Ukraine, adding that the West giving the war-torn country weapons for free "constitutes participation in the war."

"One morning we'll wake up to find out that last night Vladimir Putin has declared an ultimatum, saying that if F-16 jets taking off from the airfields of such countries continue striking Russian territory — if such and such weapons, shipped from the ports of such and such countries, continue being supplied, then we will consider these airfields and these ports legitimate war targets," Simonyan said.

Simonyan added that Russia also has the right to declare, with no ultimatum, that NATO countries are legitimate targets. But she cast doubt that Putin would take that route, saying she does not "see another option" for how the spat over Ukrainian aid could possibly end.

Simonyan and other Russian state TV figures have made headlines for previous threats against Ukraine and the West. Last April, the RT editor-in-chief floated the idea of "complete destruction" of Ukraine and "a nuclear strike."

Simonayn's RT, along with other Russian state media, has largely towed the Kremlin line on the Russia-Ukraine war after the State Duma cracked down on dissent.

United Kingdom Foreign Secretary James Cleverly recently told reporters that Ukraine "has the right to project force beyond its borders to undermine Russia's ability to project force into Ukraine itself." His remarks drew a response from Russia, with former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev saying that British officials are now a "legitimate military target" for Russia.

The United States, however, has said it does not condone strikes within Russia's borders.

"We have said this before, we do not support attacks inside of Russia. We've been very clear about that," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters last month.

Russia's economic fall was guided by Russia's leaders, not the West's leaders. The fall was Russia's failure, not the West's.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine was Putin's idea. If the invasion fails, the failure is Putin's decision, not a Russian failure caused by the West. I know that Putin keeps blaming everybody who sends weapons to Ukraine for Russia's difficulties, but what the hell did he think would happen? That the West would just let him cut off a chunk of a European country and attach it to Russia? All of Europe is aware that Russia has cut off chunks of other European countries in the past. Finland for one example. Russia has even gobbled up entire Baltic countries.

How 'shock therapy' created Russian oligarchs and paved the path for Putin

But Yeltsin and his allies believed that time was not on their side. An attempted coup in August 1991 by Soviet hardliners against the reformers almost derailed the whole project. Entrenched Soviet industrialists and party insiders wanted a return to the old order. The Yeltsin administration decided that a program known as "shock therapy" — rapidly unleashing market forces — was the way to electrocute the old Soviet system and jolt Russia into embracing capitalism.

American advisors and global creditors, especially the International Monetary Fund, played a notable role advocating for shock therapy. But some influential shock therapists, like the economist Jeffrey Sachs, then at Harvard, believed such a radical program needed support. He proposed the United States and multilateral development agencies help Russian reformers succeed with a $30 billion aid package, akin to what America had provided Europe after WWII with the Marshall Plan. Sachs also called for the cancellation of Russia's debts. But these ideas were rejected by American leaders.

President Yeltsin delivered the first big shock to the Russian economy when he lifted price controls in December 1991. As the Soviet economy collapsed, however, the policy ended up unleashing hyperinflation. By 1994, consumer prices in Russia would skyrocket to almost 2000 times what they had been in 1990. That candy bar that had cost $1 now cost $2000. Hyperinflation devastated ordinary Russians.

Meanwhile, Chubais was tasked with overseeing mass privatization. That entailed transforming a nation whose almost entire economy consisted of state-controlled industries — manufacturing plants, oil refineries, mines, media outlets, biscuit factories, you name it — into private enterprises. It was, to date, surely the biggest transfer of state assets to private owners in world history.

Alternatively, Boris Yeltsin was a drunken pig too stupid to understand the business advice he was given. Con-men told Yeltsin to destroy Russia by giving away Russian government property for less than one percent of what it was worth. Yeltsin couldn't do the back of an envelope financial arithmetic to understand he was being cheated. Yeltsin should have had somebody loyal to Russia do the arithmetic for him. That is all on Yeltsin.

Even worse, Yeltsin could not understand how inflation works, but he is not alone. Over at the inflation thread, 6ix is absolutely convinced that Biden controls prices, not the sellers. The result is high inflation because sellers keep raising prices until they have taken ALL the money that the dumbest Americans have. (Prices are about 100 times higher than prices were 100 years ago. That kind of long-term inflation, rather than monthly increases.) In Russia, the government actually does control prices in ways Biden could never do. When Yeltsin released control of prices, sellers raised prices, just like sellers obviously do in America, until they had taken ALL the money that the dumbest Russians have.

Likewise, Putin decided he wanted Ukraine and his Yes Men said "Yes, Your Highness! You are correct that the EU leaders are weaklings and will never send weapons to Ukraine for fear that you will cut off their natural gas. You are very wise and handsome, Your Highness!" Putin should not surround himself with Yes Men who know nothing. That mistake is all on Putin.

The Ukrainian Cities Obliterated In Russia's Self-Proclaimed 'Liberation'
June 11, 2023 20:23 GMT

By Donbas.Realities, Svitlana Kuzmenko, Carl Schreck

Russia has delivered multiple public justifications for the full-scale invasion of Ukraine that President Vladimir Putin launched in February 2022, among them what it has called the "liberation" of Ukraine's eastern Donbas region, which Moscow had seized partial control of in 2014.

But Russia's all-out war on Ukraine has decimated multiple cities and towns targeted in Moscow's ostensible "liberation" campaign.

A new project by Donbas.Realities, a regional news outlet of RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service, looks at the fate of five towns and cities in eastern Ukraine following Russia’s full-scale invasion, including one that was not only nearly completely destroyed by Russian artillery and bombs, but also literally wiped from the map by Russian-installed occupying administrators.

Social media video footage circulated on June 12 reportedly shows Russian barrier troops – specialized units that threaten to shoot their own retreating personnel or compel offensives – shooting Russian forces that abandoned their positions somewhere in Ukraine.[54] ISW is unable to confirm whether the footage is authentic at this time. The United Kingdom Ministry of Defense reported in November 2022 that Russian forces in Ukraine probably started deploying “barrier troops” and “blocking units” to Ukraine and that Russian generals likely want their subordinate commanders to shoot deserters, including possibly authorizing personnel kill their own deserting servicemen.[55]

Reuters saw at least three dead Russian soldiers lying in the street, including one whose fly-blown body lay by an abandoned Russian military vehicle. Artem, a member of a Ukrainian territorial defence unit, who gave no surname said the advancing Ukrainian troops had watched from a drone as Russians initially tried to evacuate their comrade, only to dump him where he lay and flee.

It was the first independent confirmation of Ukraine's advance in the area, roughly 90 km southwest of the city of Donetsk . . . No surprise that Russians leave Russians behind to die. They have been abandoning tens of millions of Russians to death since before the Great Patriotic War. Such a fine bunch of people. So loyal, trustworthy, and caring.

The CIA warned Ukraine not to bomb the Nord Stream pipeline

The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency warned the Ukrainian government not to attack the Nord Stream gas pipelines last summer after it obtained detailed information about a Ukrainian plot to destroy a main energy connection between Russia and Europe, officials familiar with the exchange said.

The message, delivered by CIA officials in June, followed a tip the CIA received from the military intelligence service of the Netherlands, these officials said.

....The CIA then received information that Ukraine had called off the original plan, according to a U.S. official....At a meeting with a European counterpart in October [after the bombing], CIA Director William Burns told his counterpart that available evidence didn’t point to Russia. When asked if it was Ukraine, he said, “I hope not,” according to an official present at the meeting.

The CIA thought Ukraine had given up on the plan after the warning, but apparently they only delayed it. This was certainly ballsy behavior from a country that desperately needed billions of dollars in military aid from the US for its war with Russia.
