Russian general threatens invasion of NATO countries and 'restoration' of Soviet Union

A Russian General hinted that Vladimir Putin's goals may be much more ambitious than those of capturing Ukraine.

Andrei Gurulev says Russia wants its empire back. The senior Vladimir Putin ally has warned NATO that Russia's conquest of Ukraine is just the first step in its goal to reassert control over its former empire and reconstitute the Soviet Union.

Lieutenant General Andrei Gurulev is a Russian MP and a former Southern Military District (SMD) Commander. Appearing recently on a discussion programme hosted by Vladimir Solovyov on state TV, the retired general suggested that only the complete restoration of Russia's historic lands would now satisfy Putin.

He hinted that this would involve reconquering Finland and the Baltic states - all of which are NATO countries.

"Still what is victory for us," he said. "For me as a military man, it's undoubtedly denazification and demilitarisation. Only it applies to when the war started. And now for us it has practically become another patriotic war. This is the liberation of our historically Russian territory. This is the liberation of our historically Russian cities. This is the fulfillment of those tasks that the president set in December 2021. Now how to accomplish it?

"100 percent this means getting to the western borders of Ukraine. But there also must be a gray zone there. That is NATO must roll back on its own. But what if it doesn't want to roll back on its own?"

He continued: "Well, let's look at things realistically as they really are. So what do we have to do to have the gray zone? We have to create it.

"But the problems are broader. Do all of you remember the map of the Soviet Union? Do we all remember the border alongside the Arctic, how it used to be? It was going from the North Pole and also down. And today?

"This is the second most serious problem that exists today. The border needs to be restored. And when I am told that the next provocations will be from Finland and the Baltics - it is possible."

The Baltic states and Finland were historically part of the Russian empire under the Romanovs.

While the Baltics enjoyed a brief period of independence following the Russian Revolution, they were eventually consumed by the Soviet Union. Finland was able to achieve and subsequently retain its independence in 1917, although it had to cede 11 percent of its territory following the winter war in 1939-40.

Signym, you are rotten. You couldn't maintain decent and straightforward behavior even if you started trying. You need close supervision to be a functional person rather than an indecent blob composed of falsehoods. But that supervision is not going to happen, is it, Signym? The same is true about Russia. A whole nation of wackos that can't control themselves. But then most cheese-eating European surrender monkeys can't act decently for long, either. They always slip back into being sneaky and conniving when an opportunity for dirty profits presents itself. Here is a fine example of an entire country failing to be decent because, hey! money:

Czechia has spent more than 7 billion euros ($7.62 billion) on Russian oil and gas since the invasion began, more than five times the 1.29 billion euros it has provided in aid to Ukraine, the report said, citing figures from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy.

According to the think tanks' estimates, the country's continued reliance on Russian energy has netted Moscow more than 2.3 billion euros in tax revenues since February 2022.

The report argued that Czechia had "ample alternative non-Russian supply options" and the necessary supply routes and energy portfolio to fully phase out Russian fossil fuels.

"Czechia does not need to import any Russian pipeline gas to maintain the security of its supply," the report said. "It can import enough gas from Norway via the pipeline routes in Germany. The Czech Republic can also buy liquefied natural gas (LNG) through the new floating terminal in Eemshaven, Netherlands."

The think tanks urged the European Union to "complete the strategic decoupling from Russian oil" by removing the exemptions for imports to Czechia, Hungary and Slovakia and to set a firm deadline to cease all Russian gas imports.

Say 100,000 to account for missed deaths.
5 wounded per 1 death is 500,000
Plus dead is 600,000.
That comes pretty close to the figure reported.

So I looked at your original link, and

I see you've been a victim of deceptive reporting.

Quote:

The US confirms Russia has lost over half a million soldiers

On October 9th, a senior U.S. defense official revealed that Russia has suffered over 600,000 [dead? dead plus wounded?] in Ukraine since Vladimir Putin ordered the full-scale invasion of the country in February 2022.

Not 600,000 dead.

The story as reported on other sites makes that very clear.

And FWIW "wounded" does not mean severely wounded or permanently disabled. It just means "wounded". Many wounded are treated and returned to battle, the number depending on whether field medicine is available and evacuation is prompt.

FWIW Russian reports of successes (# of weapons destroyed, # of enemy soldiers killed, ground taken) is reliable. Conservative, even, since bombs and missiles bury a lot under rubble, making it impossible to count the # of dead/ wounded, or # weapons destroyed, and Russian MOD doesn't consider an area taken until it's been cleared, de-mined etc.

But the MoD is very, very quiet about losses. As is to be expected.

I expect Ukraine to be very quiet about losses too. But Kiev exaggerates its successes to the point of laughability.

I presented you with, A Statistical Approach for Estimating Casualty Rates During Combat Operations. Because, you said US Intelligence has no way to estimate casualties of war accurately. What I sent you is from the Naval Health Research Center.

You respond with "some quick calc" you've come up with on your own. No sites, nothing. How funny is that? Your ignorance is mind blowing.

Summarizing: Russia is murdering Ukrainians, destroying Ukrainian property, poisoning the land. Russia has done the same, before, to Ukraine. Russia is openly discussing doing the same to other places in Europe and North America. The Russians have their #$%^&* justifications for their horrible behavior. A new word needs to be invented and used instead of the placeholder symbol #$%^&*. Old words like lie, deceive, mislead, trick, untrue, bullshit, et cetera don't convey what tasks the Russians' words are performing, which is why a new word with more descriptive energy is needed. But Signym is persuaded by the #$%^&* justifications. That makes Sigmyn equal to #$%^&* raised to a higher power of 2 or even 3. Very impressive quantities of #$%^&* are radiating from Signym's location.

NAW, hey comrade signym, can you see me laughing? Russia is dealing with layoffs. The jobs they do have require skilled workers. They don't have any because the ones they had left to avoid being drafted. Bank loans now require a repayment rate of 22%. What we are talking about are some serious problems for Russia. Problems lasting for at least decades.

3. Deployment of a “comprehensive non-nuclear strategic deterrence package” on the territory of Ukraine. [secret on exact nature]

4. Development of Ukraine's strategic-economic potential and strengthening of sanctions against the Russian Federation. Europe and the USA can start extracting and protecting Ukrainian resources, otherwise Russia will seize them .

5. The US contingent in Europe after the war will be replaced by Ukrainian military personnel , using their experience to strengthen the defense of NATO and Europe.

It's interesting but it's not gonna happen.

This is Zelensky's last, desperate plea for help. In it, he offers to open Ukraine's legs wide, ready for rape, if they will defend him from Russia. The message seems to be "Hey, I know you investors [Black Rock, IMF, Bayer, Pfizer, Parexel, Shell etc etc] won't get to pillage Russia like you planned, but you can pillage me!"

It is also blackmail: If you don't help, all your investments will go tits-up.

It's also -finally, and perhaps mostly- an excuse for internal consumption, because this deal was already proposed to Biden* and the EU, and reportedly already refused. "I did everything I could, it was the west, who promised us 'as long as it takes' and abandoned us".

He should have looked at our history of keeping our promises. Or not.

Signym, have you heard the term "The Banality of Evil"? It is controversial.

Many people believe a banal person with sweet smelling and clean hands yet involved with an evil organization (doing nice remote tasks involving deskwork such as writing, bookkeeping, scheduling, lawyering, propagandizing, philosophizing, etc) are every bit as personally evil as, for example, Dr Josef Mengele. Can a human cog, the equivalent of a zero, who is not paid and not listed on the organizational chart be evil? I'd say yes. I'd say Signym qualifies as evil.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Oct. 17 that Ukraine was not pursuing nuclear weapons, clarifying comments he had made previously.

Earlier in the day, Zelensky said that he told Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in their meeting in September that Ukraine needs to be part of NATO, or it would pursue nuclear capabilities to protect itself.

In a press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Zelensky walked back the comments and said explicitly that Ukraine was not seeking nuclear weapons.

Sweden and Finland weren't about to threaten NATO's existance. Ukraine would.

Project Ukraine cost them a ton of money, crippled the EU economies, is flooding the EU with entitled refugees, and drained NATO military stockpiles. It would embroil NATO in a direct war with Russia which none of the militaries can afford. Not even the USA, which is stretched between Israel, Taiwan, and Ukraine.

Quite possibly the neocons will get their way, but if they do it will eventually doom NATO and the EU.

Instantaneous surrender is the Trump/Signym way to prevent war deaths and unnecessary military expense for NATO. Putin is the foreign policy expert who recommends surrender as the most expedient way to avoid European conflict over minor details such as the location of international borders and which national heroes are printed on the local currency. Putin and Trump are such far-seeing national heroes that they should have their faces on American coins such as the 25 cent piece.

Moldovan police recently foiled an “unprecedented” Russian plot to meddle in the East European country’s presidential elections and a national referendum to join the European Union scheduled for Oct. 20. The pro-European president of Moldova, Maia Sandu, said the police raided numerous locations where they discovered $15 million that they allege Russia was using to buy 100,000 votes, the Moscow Times reported.

Police have also said that Russian gangs have damaged government buildings in an effort to destabilize the democratic process, Euronews wrote. Vandals spraypainted the country’s Supreme Court, the state-run broadcaster, and the Ministry for Labor and Social Protection, for example.

And on Thursday, Moldovan security officials said that several hundred Moldovan citizens were trained in Russia, Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina to incite street movements aimed at overthrowing the constitutional order, Romanian Insider reported.

It is clear why Russia would make such an illicit investment in destabilizing the country. Moldova straddles the dividing line between the US and Europe-dominated West and the East, where Russia is now reasserting its sphere of influence. Strategically, Moldova sits between war-torn Ukraine, which Russia invaded more than two years ago, and EU-member Romania. Culturally, it is a former Soviet republic where the citizens mainly speak a version of Romanian.

Politically, Moldova is at a crossroads, too, with this election underscoring whether the Kremlin is deepening or losing control over its former satellite states – as highlighted by the recent headline of a Center for European Policy Analysis report: “Moldova – Time to Choose Moscow or Brussels.”

“Moldova’s election and referendum will determine whether it cements its path to Europe or falls back under Moscow’s shadow,” CEPA wrote.

That’s because many people in the country, regardless of political affiliation, worry about what happens in Transdniestria, the Russian-speaking, Kremlin-backed breakaway region of Moldova,

Official broadcasters in the separatist Transdniestria region released footage of new military training centers. That follows an appeal by Russian speakers in the country to Russian President Vladimir Putin to “protect” ethnic Russians here, similarly to his promises to protect Russians in Ukraine.

According to Peter Apps, an analyst writing in Reuters, had Russia won its war in Ukraine, it’s highly likely it would have pushed through Ukraine’s western border to link up with the Russian so-called “peacekeeping” force occupying Transdniestria since 1991, possibly then annexing Moldova itself in its entirety.

“That now looks much less likely – when the (pro-Russian) authorities in Transdniestria publicly called for aid from Russia earlier in the year, nothing obvious was forthcoming,” he wrote. “But whatever happens at this election, both the Kremlin and (pro-Russian Moldovan exile Ilan) Shor probably will have a longer game in mind. How that plays out might yet have global implications.”

The war could have been prevented if...

We didn't plan on destroying Russia
We had not engineered a coup in Ukraine
Ukrainian Nazis hadn't started killing Russian speaking Ukrainians
Ukrainian Nazis hadn't started a program of ethnic cleansing, sparking a civil war
The IMF hadn't told Ukraine "fight ot die"
Germany, France, and Ukraine had honored Minsk I
Or, honored Minsk II, adopted by the UN
We hadn't armed Ukraine
Ukraine hadn't massed its troops on its eastern border
BoJo the Clown hadn't arm-twisted Zelensky into rejecting the peace agreement initialed with Russia in Turkey

Not engineering regime changes and not provoking wars is a good way to peace.

Zelenskiy's nuclear blackmail...

Get me in NATO ... NOW
Station your troops within my borders
Provide me with a hundreds of long range missiles ...

... or I'm gonna get me some nukes. Within weeks.

*****

USA and EU act appropriately horrified.
But, is it just an act???

*****

The first thing I thought was ...hey, even if you have weapons grade uranium (which Ukraine doesn't have the capability to produce), the actual fabrication of a nuclear bomb is a Big Deal. So sure, Ukraine could make a dirty bomb in a couple of Weeks.
But a nuclear one?
Doubtful.

But then I thought ... what is Ukraine's closest analog?

Israel.
And Israel has nukes.
It's just never been formally acknowledged

Israel had to steal bomb grade uranium https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_affair AND (they say) the triggers from the USA, but this was most likely done with the connivance of the CIA, with admin plausible deniability.

So, who is to say that Israel wouldn't "share" some nukes with Ukraine ...or the USA wouldn't share some nukes with Ukraine via Israel?

That way, our deep state gets to have its cake (a nuclear armed Ukraine) and eat it too (No USA fingerprints, no Russian blowback).

*****

But if Zelensky was serious about that, and Ukraine is - or was- in process of getting actual nukes, he just signed his political death warrant. There's no way Russia would allow Zelensky to stay in power if that was true.

The war could have been prevented if...

We didn't plan on destroying Russia

Russians kills millions and destroys trillions of property because "we" plan to destroy Russia. "We" are killed over words. Russians murder people for thinking what Russians don't want them to think. Ukrainians are killed because, well, who knows other than a psychologist when it is Russians doing the killing? Other Russians with a lawyerly mind will ignore the psychologist and create lists of reasons afterwards to justify murder. None of the justifications mention the murderers' mental derangement:

Ukrainian Human Rights Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets reported on October 18 that Ukraine has recorded more than 100 confirmed cases of Russian forces executing Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) amid a recent theater-wide increase in Russian executions of Ukrainian POWs.[47] Lubinets stated that the number of Russian executions of Ukrainian POWs is likely much higher. ISW has recently observed an increase in Russian violations of different aspects of the Geneva Convention on POWs, which prohibits the inhumane treatment and execution of POWs or persons who are clearly rendered hors de combat.[48] The European Union (EU) reported on October 16 that at least 177 Ukrainian POWs have died in Russian captivity since February 2022.[49] Head of the Ukrainian Department for Combating Crimes in Conditions of Armed Conflict Yuri Bilousov stated on October 4 that Russian forces have executed 93 Ukrainian POWs on the battlefield since the start of the full-scale invasion and that 80 percent of the recorded cases occurred in 2024, suggesting a clear and systemic increase in the pace of such war crimes.[50]

Signym, in your darkest moods, when you can't sleep, does wisdom creep into your bedroom that trouble surrounds people who are obnoxious assholes? Putin, Trump, 6ix, yourself have abundant troubles but are no wiser about causation. The Swiss know Putin and Russian personalities cause trouble and reacted in a unusual way for the Swiss:

Switzerland is set to join the European Sky Shield Initiative, a project aimed at creating a shared missile defense system for Europe, as announced by the Swiss government on Friday.

This initiative began after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, with Germany proposing the joint defense project.

Urs Loher, Switzerland's head of armaments, signed the agreement, making Switzerland the 15th member of the initiative.

"With its participation in the ESSI, Switzerland is increasing international opportunities for cooperation: ESSI enables better coordination of procurement projects, training and logistical aspects in the area of ground-based air defence," the government said in a statement.

The countries involved aim to develop a defense system against medium-range missiles, although other plans are also under consideration, according to the Swiss government.

However, the move has faced criticism, as it marks a departure from Switzerland's long-standing tradition of neutrality. The government has argued that the initiative is still compatible with its neutral stance because it doesn't impose any obligations, allowing Switzerland to choose its level of involvement in the joint military project.

Additionally, Switzerland reserves the right to withdraw if any member becomes involved in a conflict.

Well, it turns out that he didn't collude with Russia. There was no "insurrection". He didn't get us into fighting two proxy wars at the same time, and close to WWIII. He managed to control the border and got us out of TPP Under Trump, tax revenues were very high (altho he did manage to overspend that by quite a bit.) His preferred way of punishing foreign nations appears to be tariffs, which is less dangerous and less costly than proxy or direct war, and has the benefit of making manufacturing in the USA look more attractive.

Overall I thought his term in office was fair to middling, but better than the Biden* admin that followed.

So, just OOC what are your dark predictions for a Trump second term? I would like to know what worries you most, thanks.

Trump’s $2.7 trillion in tariff revenues would be unable to cover $9.2 trillion in tax cuts.

Signym, $9.2 trillion does not sound too bad to you, does it? But the analysis includes other possibilities that show far higher deficits under Trump. If his tariffs raised less money and there were higher costs for his mass deportations and tax breaks, the national debt could jump by $15.2 trillion.

Signym, I say $15.2 trillion for electing Trump is too high a price to pay for him saving Putin from the consequences of invading Ukraine.

Ukraine’s ‘victory plan’ receives mixed reactions from Western allies

U.S. backing is crucial if Zelensky is to get support from other allies for proposals he believes are necessary to strengthen Ukraine’s position on the battlefield and ahead of any peace negotiations. But analysts say the Biden administration is unlikely to make a decision before the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 5, as it may not appeal to voters.

“They seem to be just doing very little now and waiting for the election,” said Phillips O’Brien, professor of strategic studies at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. “So much of the strategy will live or die in Washington.”

Analysts said the plan is a step in the right direction for Ukraine’s military efforts. They also described it as ambitious, given allies’ fears of escalation with nuclear-armed Russia. Ukraine has previously secured Western support for requests once deemed unrealistic, such as Patriot air defense systems and F-16 jets.

Russia is interfering with the election in Moldova, the country on Ukraine's western border. Russia denies everything, including electing Trump.

Moldova's October 20 European Union (EU) referendum passed by an extremely narrow margin in large part due to support from the Moldovan diaspora, and current Moldovan President Maia Sandu will face Alexandr Stoianoglo in a second round of voting on November 3. Several Moldovan and European officials reported potential Russian interference in the election, and the Kremlin and its affiliates in Moldova will likely continue their malign influence efforts in the leadup to the November 3 runoff. The Moldovan Central Election Commission (CEC) completed the vote count on October 21 and reported that 50.46 percent (751,235) voted in favor of the EU referendum and that 49.54 percent (737,639) voted against — a difference of only 13,596 votes.[1] The CEC reported that Sandu took first place in the presidential election with 42.45 percent (656,354) and Stoianoglo took second with 25.98 percent (401,726). Sandu failed to gain the majority vote required to win in the first round, and she and Stoianoglo will move to the second round. Moldovan authorities counted votes from polling stations abroad last, during which the number of votes in favor of the referendum and Sandu greatly increased. Sandu stated early on October 21 while Moldovan authorities were still counting votes that "criminal groups" and "foreign forces" — likely referring to Russia and Kremlin-linked Moldovan opposition politician Ilan Shor — used tens of millions of euros to spread propaganda to destabilize Moldova.[2] Sandu stated that Moldovan authorities have evidence that the criminal groups wanted to buy 300,000 Moldovan votes and that the scale of fraud was "unprecedented." The European Network of Election Monitoring Organizations' (ENEMO) International Election Observation Mission reported on October 21 that it found "massive malign foreign interference attempts" ahead of the October 20 election despite Moldovan authorities' efforts to counter misinformation and vote buying schemes.[3] The BBC reported that it witnessed at least one instance of vote buying at a polling station in the pro-Russian breakaway Moldovan republic of Transnistria after a voter exited the poll and asked where she would receive her promised payment.[4] Moldovan authorities previously reported that Shor used a Russian state bank to distribute at least $15 million to Shor-affiliated regional leaders and voters in Moldova in September 2024 alone.[5]

Kremlin officials and Russian milbloggers claimed that Moldovan authorities falsified the results of the election and referendum and continued to promote long-standing Kremlin narratives targeting Moldova's path towards European integration. Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) Spokesperson Maria Zakharova claimed that Moldovan authorities used "totalitarian" methods during the election campaign and that the number of votes supporting the referendum "inexplicably" began to increase during the later stages of counting.[6] Zakharova claimed that the West is trying to turn Moldova into a "Russophobic NATO appendage deprived of sovereignty." Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov accused Moldovan authorities of persecuting opposition forces and claimed that Russian authorities are monitoring the allegedly questionable increase in the number of votes for Sandu and in support of the referendum.[7] Several Russian milbloggers, including Kremlin-affiliated milbloggers, claimed that Moldovan authorities falsified the election results and adjusted the referendum's voter turnout numbers.[8] One milblogger called for Russian authorities to create a network of "analytical and information centers" that will study how to influence processes in Moldova and promote Russia's state interests in Russia.[9]

Vladimir Putin continues his campaign to elect Donald Trump

Vladimir Putin is doing whatever he can to help Donald Trump win:

U.S. intelligence officials on Tuesday said Russians seeking to disrupt the U.S. elections created a faked video and other material smearing Democratic vice-presidential nominee Tim Walz.... They added that Russian government agencies and contractors, which generally seek to boost Republican former president Donald Trump’s campaign, are considering trying to instigate physical violence in the fraught period after voters cast their ballots.

....Russia is “potentially seeking to stoke threats towards poll workers, as well as amplifying protests and potentially encouraging protests to be violent,” the official added.

Why is Putin so enamored of Trump? Lots of reasons, but I suppose the biggest one right now is that Trump will cut off aid to Ukraine and guarantee a Russian victory.

On Ukraine's western border, in Moldova, Russia was interfering in secret. And Russia was paying bribes to vote against joining the EU. And spreading lies.

Moldovan officials repeatedly sounded the alarm over huge sums of Russian money being funnelled into the accounts of ordinary voters in the weeks leading up to the vote. The authorities accuse Moscow and its local proxies of seeking to use cash to push people into opposing EU membership and uniting behind a pro-Russian challenger (Moldova's Trump).

“It’s time Western policymakers woke up to the fact that Russia’s war isn’t just limited to Ukraine — it’s about taking on the democratic world anywhere that Moscow thinks it can exert influence,” said Ivana Stradner of Washington’s Foundation for Defense of Democracies. “And while risk-averse European and American officials think in terms of individual tactics, Putin has a whole strategy he’s using to try and win.”

For Sandu, it’s not just EU candidate nations that should be worried — or just smaller ones.

Everyone is at risk.

“It is true that you can damage the democratic process in a small country more easily,” the Moldovan president said. “But once these practices are tested in smaller countries, they can be tried in other countries.”

India, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Brazil, and South Africa opposed the transformation of BRICS into an anti-US coalition

The adoption of the Kazan Declaration on the second day of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Republic of Tatarstan on October 23 demonstrated that Russia has not yet secured the international support nor created the alternative security structure that the Kremlin desires. The Kazan Declaration notably only mentioned Russia's war in Ukraine once.[1] The declaration states that all signatories should act in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter — including the provision on respect for territorial integrity — and that BRICS states welcome "relevant" offers of mediation aimed at ensuring a peaceful settlement of the war through dialogue and diplomacy. Ukraine has emphasized that the "principles of the UN Charter" is a main avenue through which Ukraine can achieve peace and highlighted the illegality of Russia's war under international law.[2] The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) responded to the Kazan Declaration, stating that it shows that Russia failed to "export" its views on changing the world order and global security architecture to BRICS summit participant states.[3] The Ukrainian MFA stated that the declaration also demonstrates that BRICS states are not unified around Russia's war against Ukraine, likely since many of these countries support the UN Charter's principles. Ukraine's Foreign Intelligence Service similarly assessed that the BRICS summit will not result in the international community's approval of an alternative system of international settlements that Russia wants and stated that India, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Brazil, and South Africa opposed the transformation of BRICS into an anti-US coalition.[4]

Russia has rejected efforts to confiscate its assets, describing them as “21st-century piracy”.

The Russian military is reportedly coercing Russian conscripts into contract service in the Russian military by issuing enlistment bonuses to conscripts who never signed military service contracts with the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD). Russian opposition outlets reported on October 23 that at least seven conscripts in the 232nd Rocket Artillery Brigade (Central Military District [CMD]) received a one-time direct deposit of 405,000 rubles (about $4,220) from Russian regional authorities under the decree regulating payments to conscripts and contract servicemen, despite not having signed a Russian military service contract.[94] The Russian authorities have been incentivizing military contract service through large one-time payments (essentially signing bonuses) as part of ongoing crypto-mobilization efforts.[95] Russian opposition outlets reported that the Russian military prohibited the conscripts from leaving their base to go to a bank to refuse the money transfer and later transferred them to Rostov Oblast.[96] Russian opposition outlet SOTA reported that a man who had never served in the Russian military received a direct deposit of 660,514 rubles (about $6,900) from the Russian MoD even though he had not signed a Russian military service contract.[97] Russian opposition outlet Meduza noted that conscripts in the 90th Tank Division (41st Combined Arms Army, CMD) complained in early October that they had received a one-time direct deposits of 305,000 rubles (about $3,500) from Russian regional authorities for allegedly signing Russian military contracts despite not actually having done so.[98]

Of course not. Bc there is nothing to back up your lies.

AFA reluctant soldiers... Kiev "recruiters" are dragging men off the street, out of restaurants and shops and other public venues. Too many videos to post. Soldiers are abandoning their posts en masse, surrendering (400 in Kursk just yesterday), deserting permanently, or refusing orders. Can fragging be far behind?

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

And now for some REAL WORLD in RWE ...

From North to South

Kursk, Russia: 400 Ukrainian soldiers surrender in Kursk so far this week, and more territory is retaken by Russia

Northern Kupiansk ... Russia brings reinforcements to the Oskol River.
Vehicle, armored vehicles and weapons of an attempted Ukrainian counterattack were destroyed (note: Russia tends to aim for vehicles and weapons, Ukrainians will send drones after a single Russian soldier)

Southern Kupiansk ... A Ukrainian artillery pocket just south of the Russian bridgehead at the Oskol River risks being wiped out.

Sieversk ... is being bombarded

Toretsk, a decent sized city immediately to the east and somewhat north of the important logistical hub of Pokrovsk, is being taken.

There is heavy fighting over a slag heap to the E of Pokrovsk. If/ when Russians takes the slag heap, they will be able to enter the eastern suburb of Pokrovsk, called Myrnograd.

Selydove, a city to the south and east of Pokrovsk, along a major connecting highway, is somewhere between 50-90% under Russian control. Expected to be abandoned by Ukraine on a Tuesday at the end of the BRICS Summit tomorrow.

South of that, the Russians have created a huge cauldron and may be surrounding "many" Ukrainian troops.

Directly to the south of the cauldron, on the southern edge of a significant reservoir, is the town of Khurahove, which is being taken by the Russians. A FAB 3000 destroyed a temporary base for drone operators in the city and killed up to 50.

Russia continues to nibble at the Zaparozhiy line of contact.

No updates on Chasov Yar to the north, or further south in Kherson.

Since Dima gets a lot of f his "info" from Ukrainian Telegram channels and Kiev, there is a certain amount of fantasy in his video. You can discount the notion of N Korean soldiers in Kursk, which is entirely nonsense. And you can discount the idea of a BRICS currency, which won't be in the cards anytime soon.

The Kremlin is reportedly attempting to portray the BRICS summit in Kazan, Republic of Tatarstan as evidence of widespread international support for Russia – especially to domestic audiences in Russia. Russian opposition outlet Meduza reported on October 24 that it reviewed the Russian Presidential Administration's manual to Russian state media and propagandists with guidelines about how to frame the ongoing BRICS summit in Kazan.[8] The manual reportedly highlighted three themes: Russian President Vladimir Putin is the "informal lead of the world majority," Western elites are "panicking," and "anxiety" is prevalent in the West generally. The Kremlin reportedly told media outlets to report that the BRICS summit "has the world's attention" and proves that "attempts to isolate" Russia after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine have "failed." Meduza reported that media outlets are supposed to highlight how Putin establishes "strategic ties that are not limited to one direction" in contrast to the West's alleged "fleeting alliances" (NATO celebrated its 75th anniversary this year). Russian state media and propagandists recently published articles highlighting many of these themes, sometimes even word for word as reportedly written in the manual."[9] Russian opposition outlet Verstka reported on October 24 that pro-Russian bots on Russian social media site VKontakte (VK) have left over 10,000 comments in two days about the BRICS summit – reportedly one of the largest Kremlin bot efforts recently.[10] The bots were promoting the idea that Russia is not internationally isolated, that BRICS' influence is growing, that anti-Russian sanctions are decreasing in importance, and that Russian forces are achieving successes in Ukraine. A Russian insider source claimed on October 24 that unspecified Kremlin-linked sources stated that BRICS states largely do not support Russia's position on its war in Ukraine, forcing the Kremlin to push this topic into the background in order to achieve some kind of "serious international association."[11] The insider source claimed that multiple meetings during the summit discussed the People's Republic of China's (PRC) and Brazil's peace proposals – which favor Russia – but that these discussions "ultimately led to nothing." ISW assessed on October 23 that the adoption of the Kazan Declaration on the second day of the BRICS summit demonstrated that Russia has not yet secured the international support nor created the alternative security structure that the Kremlin desires.[12]

Ukrainian authorities are investigating another execution of Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) by Russian forces in the Pokrovsk direction against the backdrop of Russian forces' increasingly frequent POW executions across the theater. The Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office stated on October 24 that it is opening a pre-trial investigation into the murder of Ukrainian POWs by Russian forces near Selydove (southeast of Pokrovsk).[14] The Prosecutor General's Office reported that Russian forces captured four Ukrainian servicemembers near Selydove on October 6 and filmed their interrogations, and that Ukrainian forces discovered the bodies of the four killed servicemembers after regaining the lost positions on October 7. The Prosecutor General's Office did not publish photographs or footage confirming this report.[15] Ukrainian Human Rights Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets stated on October 24 that he sent letters to the United Nations (UN) and International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) about Russian forces' violation of the Geneva Convention on the Treatment of POWs.[16] Ukrainian officials notably recently reported that Russian forces executed two unarmed Ukrainian POWs near Selydove on October 18.[17]

A Sobering Moment in the Ukraine War

If Ukraine remains on its current strategic trajectory, Kyiv could lose the war sometime in 2025. This is an avoidable outcome if action is taken now.

By Doug Livermore | October 25, 2024

https://cepa.org/article/a-sobering-moment-in-the-ukraine-war/

The United States and other NATO allies have imposed conditions, particularly regarding attacks on Russian soil and this has limited Ukraine’s ability to strike deep within Russia, which could otherwise disrupt supply lines, airfields, and command structures upon which recent battlefield successes have relied.

The Ukraine war has entered a critical phase. The infusion of foreign troops on Russia’s behalf, coupled with Western hesitation in providing unrestricted support, has tipped the scales in Moscow’s favor.

Without significant shifts in strategic approach, the outlook for Kyiv is increasingly grim. However, targeted adjustments can help Ukraine regain the initiative and move closer to achieving sustainable peace.

A longtime ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin has predicted that the majority of Russian companies could go bankrupt due to the increasingly high interest rate.

Sergey Chemezov, CEO of the state-owned Rostec, which produces much of Russia's arms and military equipment, issued the warning while addressing the Federation Council earlier this week, according to Russian outlet Business Gazeta.

Chemezov criticized the Russian central bank's elevated key interest rate, which, following his comments, was raised by an additional two percentage points on Friday to a record 21 percent.

"There is no 20 percent profitability anywhere. Maybe in the drug trade, but even the sale of weapons does not bring such a profit," he said.

Chemezov said that the high key interest rate drives up borrowing costs for businesses, which hurts their profitability, including Rostec's.

"It is simply not profitable for enterprises to use borrowed funds, as I have already said many times. It is just that if we continue to work like this, then practically the majority of enterprises will go bankrupt," he said.

He added that high-tech companies with longer production cycles are particularly impacted, as they only receive advance payments of 30 to 40 percent from customers and have to cover the rest with a loan.

However, he noted that the high borrowing costs ultimately eat into their profit margins.

He warned that this situation could lead to "stagflation," referring to economic conditions of slow growth, high unemployment, and rising prices.

Chemezov's concerns echo those made recently by other Russian businessmen, who warn that the high borrowing costs could hamper economic growth.

Russian billionaire Alexey Mordashov, the largest shareholder of steelmaker Severstal, said earlier this month that the situation was precarious.

"The need to raise rates to limit inflation is clear, but we are starting to go too far," Mordashov said, per Reuters. "We are coming to a situation where the medicine may become more dangerous than the disease."

The already-high interest rate could rise further amid ongoing inflation pressures on the country.

On Friday, Russia's central bank said that it had further raised its key interest rate to counter rising inflation, which is currently at 8.4 percent, driven by heightened military spending amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

"Inflation expectations continue to increase," a statement from the central bank said. "Growth in domestic demand is significantly outstripping the capabilities to expand the supply of goods and services."

"Further tightening of monetary policy is required to ensure the return of inflation to the target and reduce inflation expectations."

The bank noted that a further rate hike at the next meeting is possible to help bring inflation back to target levels.

. . . "several thousand" North Korean soldiers arrived at Kursk Oblast to participate in an upcoming Russian counteroffensive operation to push Ukrainian forces from their salient in Kursk Oblast.[2] The officials stated that North Korean forces have not engaged in combat operations yet and that the North Korean forces' task in Kursk oblast is unclear. The officials noted that a significant contingent of North Korean forces would help the Russian military to avoid pulling additional forces from eastern Ukraine to participate in counteroffensive operations in Kursk Oblast. A senior Ukrainian official told the NYT that a maximum number of 5,000 elite North Korean troops had likely arrived in Russia by October 21.[3] The participation of North Korean troops in combat operations in Kursk Oblast or frontline areas in Ukraine would make North Korea an active combatant and belligerent in Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Russia can finance war against Ukraine for several more years despite overheating economy

By Kateryna Tyshchenko — Sunday, 27 October 2024

https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2024/10/27/7481596/

Russia can afford to fund its war on Ukraine for several more years, according to economists, because of massive oil revenue and Western sanctions failures, particularly the oil price cap put in place by the Group of Seven nations, which has failed to squeeze Russia’s oil income.

Rosstat reports that real wages in Russia rose by 12.9% year-on-year during the first half of 2024, though independent analysts have raised doubts about these figures. Notably, the lowest-paid workers experienced the most significant increase, with a surge of 67%, as reported by the independent Russian newspaper The Bell in March.

Rising military salaries are driving rapid wage growth in Russia, putting significant pressure on private companies that are struggling to keep up. A recent survey by the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs found that 82.8% of firms are facing challenges in hiring staff. Meanwhile, Russia's Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) reported a drop in the unemployment rate to 2.4% as of June.

In the past, Russia relied on Central Asian migrants to fill low-income jobs; however, following a terrorist attack at the Crocus City Hall shopping centre, the country deported tens of thousands of these workers and imposed entry bans on many others. Reports from independent Russian media indicate that a significant number of migrant workers were also conscripted to fight in the war.
