Russia controlled Poland, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania until the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. Putin was stationed in East Germany until that collapse. He wants to take over those lands, again, plus all the other territory that the Soviet Union lost control over, including Ukraine, which is interfering with Putin's Grand Design. Every time Putin mentions his nukes and all the brand new designs for nuclear weapons he has built since 1999, Putin is telling you what his plans are for World Conquest. 6ix, you should pay attention. That $5,500 billion the US spent for nuclear weapons was intended to stop the Soviet Union from taking over the world. Good thing the money was spent, or else Putin would have already succeed in his Grand Design.

Oh Jeezus, SECOND. It's very simple: Putin doesn't want nuclear missiles or NATO forces on his border.

He may have to concede on the NATO forces, but he's going to hang rough on the nukes

This isn't about occupying territory, you stupid sod. The Russians tried that already and it didn't work well for them. They don't intend to repeat that mistake.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin has alarmed Western leaders by referencing the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in a conversation with French president Emmanuel Macron. Putin expressed the view that the bombings demonstrated that ‘you don’t need to attack the major cities in order to win’. Macron was distinctly alarmed. It sounded like a very heavy hint that Putin might detonate a tactical nuclear weapon in the east of Ukraine, while leaving Kyiv intact. That appeared to be the thrust of his remarks.

Oh, baloney.

The only nation that ever used nukes in war was the USA. It's the USA that withdrew from most nuclear agreements, changed it's nuclear strike policy to allow nuclear strikes to a non-nuclear threat, and has been talking up (in policy circles) the view that we can win with tactical nukes without sparking Armageddon. If Macron is alarmed about anyone, it should be the USA.

Everything you accuse "Putin" of planning, we've already done.

It is very, very simple, Signym: A popular Russian state TV anchor has warned that Moscow could wipe Britain off the map with a nuclear tsunami in retaliation for supporting Ukraine.

In his Sunday evening primetime show on Channel One, one of the most-watched in Russia, Dmitry Kiselyov claimed on May 1 that a strike by the country’s Poseidon nuclear underwater drone could drown the UK under a 500-metre tidal wave of radioactive seawater.

According to its mission statement, the project was focused on “damaging the important components of the adversary's economy in a coastal area and inflicting unacceptable damage to a country's territory by creating areas of wide radioactive contamination that would be unsuitable for military, economic, or other activity for long periods of time”.

In 2018, a leaked draft of the Pentagon's Nuclear Posture Review acknowledged Russia was developing a "new intercontinental, nuclear-armed, nuclear-powered, undersea autonomous torpedo”.

I leave Signym to work out why Russians should not build Poseidon and why, if Russians do build it, they should keep Poseidon a secret or, at least, not threaten to use it.

Neither Signym nor 6ixStringJack know nukes, but Andy does: The history to which we are heir includes many millennia in which the possibility of our global self-destruction did not exist. By contrast, it is only within the span of living memory that humankind has come to possess powers of that magnitude. Only recently has this question of “the fate of civilization” gained some urgency.

It was only in World War II that the breakthrough achieved by the Manhattan Project opened the door to the possibility that Life-on-Earth’s experiment with civilization might culminate in a nuclear holocaust.

(That possibility already came dangerously close to realization in 1962, with the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. And we’ve been compelled lately to re-envision that potential nightmare when one man – who is an unbalanced fascist dictator, filled with resentments and a lust for empire, and in command of a massive nuclear arsenal — rattled his nuclear saber to intimidate his opponents.)

. . . leaving the international order as it has always been – which means that confrontations between great nuclear powers (like the Cuban Missile Crisis) will recur indefinitely — amounts to playing Russian Roulette.

We know for a virtual certainty what would be the outcome for a person who keeps on spinning the chamber and pulling the trigger. Eventually, what can happen will happen.

Civilization, with its persisting war system, won’t survive for the long haul if we just keep on playing this kind of Russian Roulette.

In case 6ix can't understand, Putin has a revolver which he points at the US and then pulls the trigger. Just because his modified version of Russian Roulette has not yet killed the US is a bad reason for Putin to keep pulling the trigger, again and again, amusing himself with, perhaps, an unloaded revolver.

Unless the world leaders know that we're actually legit out of gas and they aren't telling us, there is NO SCENARIO where I'm worried about Russians having nukes.

I don't even care for a second that North Korea or China has nukes.

The ONLY people I'm worried about having nuclear capability is Muslims in countries that we've taken out their secular leaders and allowed savage bible bouncing wack jobs who believe they're serving a god that will reward them for killing infadels in the after life take the reins.

USA, Russia and North Korea and China are Predators.

Signym, you are sillier than 6ix. Putin is playing Russian Roulette. He knows the gun is not loaded. I know it. He is doing the dramatic act almost every time he speaks in public for the amazement of his Russians who want to feel their country is strong. It is! Truly is! Russia is strong in the same way North Korea is strong, but in more important ways, the economy and life span and peacefulness and sanity, Russia and North Korea are the same. Both are weaklings. And both weakened themselves. Their prosperous neighbors, Finland and South Korea, didn't weaken Russia and North Korea. The leadership of Russia and North Korea can't admit the neighbors are doing much better than they are and don't want to fix what is wrong with Russia and N Korea because the very first step would be their resignation. They know how incompetent they are and no self-help book is gonna fix them. They have to quit their jobs and go into retirement, the same thing Signym and 6ix have done.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping made his most direct criticism yet of Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine on Friday, warning the Russian president not to resort to nuclear weapons.

The international community, said Xi, should “jointly oppose the use of, or threats to use, nuclear weapons,” according to a statement carried by Xinhua, China’s state news agency. The world should also “advocate that nuclear weapons cannot be used, a nuclear war cannot be waged, in order to prevent a nuclear crisis” in Europe or Asia, Xi added.

Xi also called for “improving the humanitarian situation” in the crisis areas, especially during the winter.

Still, the Chinese leader, who before the war referred to Putin as his best friend, notably stopped short of asking Russia to withdraw, a key demand for Ukraine and its Western backers. He also made no mention of Putin’s refusal to honor the U.N. agreement on facilitating Ukrainian grain exports, with his premier instead advocating the export of Chinese grain to help ease the food crisis.

In September Putin publicly acknowledged for the first time that Xi had “questions” and “concerns” about the war. Shortly after that meeting between the Chinese and Russian leaders, Putin upped the ante and raised the notion that nuclear weapons could be used. “To defend Russia and our people, we doubtlessly will use all weapons resources at our disposal,” Putin said. “This is not a bluff.” Translation: This is a bluff.

Elite Russian Naval Unit Reacts to Stunning Loss of 300 Men: 'Baffling'

A high-ranking unit in the Russian navy is reportedly reeling after experiencing significant losses in a recent offensive.

The 155th Guards Naval Infantry Brigade was involved in a Wednesday attack on a Ukrainian military garrison in Pavlivka, a town southwest of the recently annexed Donetsk region, according to The Moscow Times on Monday. The offensive was intended to give Russian forces access to a key supply line in the area.

In the wake of the offensive, the elite naval unit is reportedly pointing the finger at "baffling" leadership decisions that led to the loss of roughly 300 men. These complaints were made in a letter shared by a handful of Russian media figures online, which was sent by the unit to regional leaders in its home region in Russia's Far East.

The introductory paragraph saw the marines of the unit accuse their leaders of being motivated by pay bonuses, promises, and military honors.

"Once again, we were thrown into a baffling offensive by General Muradov and his fellow countryman Akhmedov in order for Muradov to earn bonuses in front of [Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff for the Russian military] and Akhmedov Muradov promised a hero of Russia," the letter reads, as translated by the online program, Yandex. "As a result, we and the Kamchatka Marines are advancing on Pavlivka. As a result of a 'carefully' planned offensive by the 'great commanders', we lost about 300 people killed, wounded, and missing in 4 days. 50 percent of the equipment. This is just our team."

Poor comrade signym. Once again, she has to backtrack on her earlier comments about Russia invading Ukraine and what they were attempting to do. Now she claims Putin only wanted to stop NATO from putting Nukes on the Russian border. This is something NATO never attempted to do.

Yet, Putin in his ultimate wisdom, choose to sacrifice nearly 80 thousand dead or wounded Russians “so far”, and the better part of his military equipment, to stop something that wasn’t happening.

You can’t sell it comrade. The cats out of the bag. Without nukes Russia has a third-rate army, correction, had a third-rate army before they invaded Ukraine.

State-run media figures have also acknowledged the existence of the letter, based on one journalist's Telegram post, but they did not go into great detail about its contents.

The letter further accuses their leaders of hiding the true statistics from higher-ups for fear of facing accountability for their failures. They also continued to accuse them of leading men into doomed offensives for the sake of boosting their own prestige.

"The district command together with [the brigade commander] are hiding this... for fear of accountability," the letter circulated continued. "They don't care about anything other than showing off. They call people meat."

In their own report on the Pavlivka offensive, the Ukrainian military said that its troops seized several armored vehicles from Russian forces, which included a T-80BVM tank.

"Over the past 24 hours, the units of the Defense Forces have repelled attacks of Russian occupiers in the areas of the settlements of Verkhnyokamgyanske, Spirne, Maryinka, Novomykhaylivka, Vodâne, and Pavlivka of Donetsk region," the Ukrainian army said Friday via its official Facebook page.

The statement continued: "The enemy conducts shelling of Defense Forces units along the line of encounter, carries out fortification equipment of the borders in individual directions and conducts air reconnaissance. It continues to strike critical infrastructure and civilian housing, in violation of International Humanitarian Law... and customs of warfare."

Newsweek reached out to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense for comment.

Yanno, we had a good run as world hegemon, and our petrodollar/ reserve currency status allowed up to splash our money around the globe. And TBH it benefitted the average USA citizen for a while.

But that hasn't been the case for at least 30 years (thank you, Clinton, for making us financialists) and our constant war mongering is only benefiting a VERY small elite in the WEF, MIC, and various oligarchs that we shower with $$. And earned us a crapton of blowback

With 95% in Miami-Dade, DeSantis is up almost 12 points on Crist now. Anybody with half a brain cell knew that DeSantis was going to win, but nobody knew it would be by this much. After Trump gets his second term, DeSantis will be your President for 8 more years.

My condolences to the citizens of Maryland and Massachusetts, but we already knew what those morons were going go do going into this.

The U.N. General Assembly is due to vote next week on a draft resolution recognising that Russia must be responsible for reparation in Ukraine for the injury, including any damage, caused by "internationally wrongful acts." The text has been put forward by Ukraine, Canada, Guatemala and the Netherlands.

Three-quarters of the 193-member General Assembly voted in March to denounce Russia's invasion and then again in October to condemn Moscow's attempted annexation of parts of Ukraine.

6ix, what happened to the confident person you were yesterday? But no need for you to worry because there is another election scheduled for 2024 and, until then, Trump will be fine. Once Trump is reelected, he will bring peace in Ukraine with his marvelous negotiation skills, just as he brought peace between North Korea and South Korea with his highly productive personal diplomacy with Kim Jong-un, completely cutting out the President of South Korea from the negotiations. Trump can do the same magic with Putin, while Trump excludes the President of Ukraine from the negotiations. Who needs Volodymyr Zelenskyy when Trump can spend all his time talking to Putin in secret meetings with no stenographer recording what was said?

President Trump went to 'extraordinary lengths' to hide details of Putin meetings

Russia’s defense minister and top commander in Ukraine announced Wednesday that Russian troops will pull back from the key city of Kherson in southern Ukraine.

Defense minister Sergey Shoigu said he accepted a proposal from Russian Gen. Sergey Surovikin to order Russian forces to retreat to the eastern bank of the Dnieper River, in effect abandoning the city of Kherson.

Surovikin said it was a “very difficult decision” and justified it as necessary to save the lives of Russian soldiers and to preserve their capacity for future operations.

“Besides that, it frees up part of the forces and resources, which will be employed for active actions, including offensive, in other directions,” Surovikin said in the televised meeting with Shoigu.

Kherson is the only regional capital the Russians have occupied since 2014. The city and the surrounding area act as a gateway to Crimea Peninsula, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.

According to various independent analysts, it's been clear as mud what the Russian command would decide about Kherson. They've been making moves ... evacuating citizens and removing historic artifacts... that could be interpreted as either a planned defense or a planned retreat. They've also been building fortifications and trenches, which looked very much like a committed defense. But ultimately I guess the logistics of defending the far (western) side of a wide river looked too difficult and too costly.

Well, this is war. It would be unusual for one side or the other to experience unending victory. Inevitably there will be setbacks for both sides. Plus, think this is more in line with Russian strategy, which is NOT to take and hold ground, but to wear down Kiev's military while preserving their own.

So once the ground freezes, expect to see a Kiev offensive in Kherson. It will probably come with huge losses for Kiev since the western side of the river will be within artillery range of Russians.

Signym, you obfuscate. This war made you unrealistically optimistic about Russia's future prospects, Signym, but there are people who actually know what the prospects are. To keep them quiet about what they know, they are being threatened with death or imprisonment:

Russia's elite are worried for their safety after an ally of President Vladimir Putin said those who aren't enthusiastic enough about the war in Ukraine should be repressed, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, a Putin loyalist and founder of the paramilitary Wagner Group, said that Russian tycoons who are not supportive enough over the conflict should face "urgent Stalinist repressions", Bloomberg reported, citing unnamed sources.

The "Stalinist repressions" are a reference to Russia's Great Purge, a political campaign led by Soviet dictator Josef Stalin in 1937 that aimed to eliminate anyone in his party he considered a threat.

Prigozhin's comments have alarmed top Russian business executives and government officials, who told Bloomberg they are worried about the direction the war is going, and fear purges and arbitrary arrests.

Nah...

Russian Security Council always knew it would be Russia v NATO/USA. They've been preparing for this since at least 2007: forging economic ties with China, oil- and gas-producing nations (Iran, Saudi Arabia), erstwhile neutral nations (India), and geographically important nations (Turkey, the 'stans). Building up their military and hardening their economy and financial systems.

Looking back, I can see that they hoped their feint towards Kiev would impel Kiev to negotiate. It almost, but ultimately didn't work. But they had backup plans, and backup plans to backup plans. Unlike before, tho, Russia doesn't intend to lose another 26 million in war. That's why the slow approach with standoff weapons.

Since we've been invading poor, militarily disorganized nations we've gotten used to seeing a pattern of warfare: bomb the snot out of everything, civilian and military targets alike, and then - when everything is flattened- send in the troops. If anything is still moving, call in an airstrike.

Russia doesn't seem to be doing that. They're fighting the whole collective west, so they're being conservative. It's not an easy fight. But it is a fight that I think Russia will ultimately win.

What does winning lookike?

Not taking Ukraine or any other European nation, that's for sure. I think it means a whole new security architecture.

Russia’s objectives in the war against Ukraine are anything but clear.
They have included “denazification” and “decommunisation”;
ensuring the security of inhabitants of the Donbas;
the demilitarisation and non-admission of Ukraine to Nato;
the return of formerly Russian lands;
the protection of the Russian language;
and even the “saving” of Ukrainian cities from gay parades.

The lack of clearly defined objectives makes the definition of victory uncertain. But this ambiguity also makes the criteria for defeat unclear — let alone one so bad as to endanger Putin. In fact, the Russian president had already survived several serious defeats: the invasion’s opening “blitzkrieg” failed, and Russian troops were forced to retreat from around Kyiv and several other cities. Russia lost the Moskva, the flagship of its Black Sea Fleet, and abandoned Snake Island, its first successful capture from the start of the war. After the hasty retreat from the outskirts of Kharkiv, another symbolically important target — the bridge to Crimea — was attacked. Other leaders might have already been toppled by such military failures, but not Putin.

The fact is that Putin’s supporters do not perceive the invasion of Ukraine as an act of aggression. For them, it’s a retaliation against the much more powerful west. Researchers of Russian society are observing a startling paradox. History puts Russia in a row of vast western colonial empires. But after its defeat in the cold war, the collapse of the Soviet Union and the economic hardships of the 1990s, a growing number of Russians felt they had been reduced to a colony ruled by western forces. They now believe they are casting off the yoke which so humiliated their country and “imposed” capitalism upon it.

In the eyes of dissatisfied Russians, any form of resistance to the west is a victory, almost regardless of the end result. Even in retreat, they will console themselves with the thought of having prevented Russia’s “further enslavement”. This is why there is no direct link between military setbacks and the weakening of Putin’s power. It is as difficult for the president to lose this war as it is to win it. Domestically, even the invasion itself is a sort of victory. Meanwhile, the passive majority can be convinced that any outcome is the best possible one. And the critics will be silenced with repression, just as they are now.

Peace endangers Putin’s status as the challenger of the west. The Russian president is pushed into a virtually endless war for its own sake.

Putin’s dreams of establishing Russia as a great power on the back of its military strength are over, and so too are his ambitions of securing a legacy as one of the nation’s great state-builders. His reputation as a geopolitical mastermind is in tatters. Putin-the-man may still cling to power for years, but Putin-the-legend is dead.

Even brittle and stagnating regimes can hold on for a long time. Tsarist Russia was arguably brain-dead by 1911, when the brutally reformist Prime Minister Petr Stolypin was assassinated, but it still lasted through three years of catastrophe in the First World War before crumbling in 1917.

Zelensky announced that he would hold peace negotiations if Russia agreed to five preconditions:
That they would restore Ukraine’s territorial integrity,
respect U.N. resolutions on the war,
pay to repair all damages caused by the war,
punish war criminals, and
guarantee that an invasion won’t happen again.

Noticeably missing from this list is a demand — which was part of an earlier, otherwise similar announcement — that Putin leave office. Zelensky signed a decree in October stating that Ukraine will never negotiate with Putin, though left open the possibility of holding talks with Putin’s successor. Given that Putin’s primary motive is to stay in power, this in effect put diplomacy off the table. The fact that the new demands say nothing about Putin’s fate retrieves the prospect of diplomacy from oblivion.

The prospects are still very dim. It is extremely unlikely that Putin would concede to any of Zelensky’s current five demands. But to an outside observer, the conditions at least seem reasonable. They hoist Zelensky to the high ground of any moral equation; they allow wavering supporters of Ukraine to conclude that he is interested in a diplomatic solution to the war.

If Putin were suddenly to become open to peace talks, his troop withdrawal from Kherson would facilitate the possibility. If both sides agreed someday to a cease-fire, the Dnieper river would be a natural line of demarcation—clear, unambiguous, and easily monitored. The line could also serve as the starting point of a peace negotiation. But, again, neither side seems quite ready for that: Zelensky thinks he’s winning; Putin thinks he’s not yet losing. The war seems likely to drag on for quite a while longer.

The UK defense ministry said in its daily assessment of the conflict that Russian forces have likely started deploying "barrier troops" or "blocking units" to deal with their own retreating soldiers.

According to recent media reports, both mobilized Russian soldiers and their officers are fleeing from combat in Ukraine.

Independent news outlet Verstka cited a Russian soldier on November 7 who said that his unit's commanders had fled from the front line near Makiivka on November 2. In contrast his battalion was ordered to dig trenches and hold defensive positions.

On Thursday, Kremlin propagandist Vladimir Solovyov demanded that the death penalty be reinstated in Russia for "traitors" and soldiers who retreat from battle in Ukraine.

Solovyov, an ally of Putin, made the remarks during his radio show Full Contact (Polny Contakt) shortly after Russia announced its withdrawal from the key Ukrainian city of Kherson.

"I believe that we should reject the moratorium on the death penalty and introduce articles allowing the execution of traitors and their accomplices, terrorists and their accomplices, sponsors, and financiers, including shooting deserters," he said.

The Hunger Games inspires the Russian ambassador's fake stories. Ambassador will never admit he is lying to please Putin.

Moscow's ambassador to the U.S. has claimed that foreigners fighting alongside Ukraine's forces were "hunting" Russians fighting in the war.

Anatoly Antonov, a former deputy defense minister who has been the Russian envoy to Washington since 2017, told the Izvestia newspaper that "criminals" and "mercenaries" had joined the fight against Moscow's forces since Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine began on February 24.

Antonov said: "No one hides this in the West, a huge number of mercenaries and criminals of various stripes have accumulated on Ukrainian territory."

He added that they were "using the current situation as a kind of safari" and that they were "hunting for Russian lives."

Izvestia reported that he also said the West was using Ukraine as "an instrument of struggle" against Russia and that "there is a desire to make a third-rate state out of us, or even better — to split it up." I'll guess that the ambassador is inspired by some other science fiction movie that I am unfamiliar with to create this lie.

So, you're saying that Russia's war in Ukraine has widespread support in Russia?

Then you day that Russian soldiers are running away, and that the Ptin "regime" only stays in power bc people are afraid of him??

Do you suppose it's possible for you to bang your propaganda points together, and decide on ONE story, instead of splattering the board with contradictory crap?

Or are you just a committed crap-blaster?

I assume you are unaware that close to 99% of all Russians are hypocrites, fakers, cowards, shirkers, and liars at every opportunity? How would I know? Where is the proof? The best Russians left Russia, leaving the worst in charge. It is so very easy for the hollow inside people, the leftover Russians, to support war (such is their worthlessness) and yet, when forced into combat, they prove themselves to be one of the 99% who are hollow men performing in no way as if they believe in what they "support" in their overheated imaginations. About 50% of Americans are like that and they struggle to stay in the middle-class because they are hollow, painting their exterior to appear as solid individuals, but inside they are hypocrites, fakers, cowards, shirkers, liars, gluttons, drunks, just like 99% of Russians. With 99% of Russians being hollow it is inevitable that Russia is much poorer than America with only 50% hollow. It would be a better world if more of the hollow people would remake themselves into whole people.

Wow. And you question that Russians don't like Americans and Americanization? Your attitude towards Russia and Russians is loud and clear. And, Russians aren't THAT stupid that they would keep coming back for another ass-rape and teeth-kicking.

How many? Which ones?

I mean, I know many crooked oligarchs left Russia, and you seem to like oligarchs well enough, so maybe you think oligarchs are "the best people"?

Aside from oligarchs, what percentage has left? 1%?

Boy, are YOU a twisted soul!

What SECOND, THUGR,. and CAPN don't understand is that we- the collective west (EU, NATO, USA)- are throwing everything we have ... and I mean literally everything we have short of nukes, tanks, fighter jets, and (a lot of) troops... into Ukraine.

Not just weapons, intel, and other military assets but entire economies and finances thrown into the furnace.

Analysis of weapons available to Ukraine

The UK and Germany are toast, economically. Ukraine is toast; it's infrastructure is crippled, at least a third of it's people have left and appx 100,000 men have been killed already.

This is like an under-the-table war, where neither side is willing to admit how much they're putting into it.

How many Russians have been displaced by this war? About zero because the War has only been fought on Ukrainian land.

Russia destroyed hundreds of billions of dollars of Ukrainian real estate. How much Russian real estate value has been destroyed by Ukraine? Approximately zero because the battles are all fought on Ukrainian land, not inside Russia.

Russia has destroyed trillions of dollars in economic activity inside Europe by cutting off fuel to Europe. How much of the Russian economy has been destroyed by the EU? Approximately zero according to Signym and Putin.

This is the most one-sided war there can be, where the EU and Ukraine are afflicted with millions of refugees and $trillions of damage caused by Russia while the Russians are almost untouched, except on the battlefield, which just so happens to be all inside Ukraine because the Armies of the EU and Nato and the USA are NOT attacking Russia.

What is happening on the Ukrainian battlefield to Russia? If nothing is happening to the Russian Army then the EU and Nato and the USA need to move this war into Russia and start damaging Russian property and the Russian economy and making Russian refugees. According to Putin, his economy is undamaged.

The US Department of Defense has released a statement saying the Russian forces have not only lost tens of thousands of soldiers, but also half of their main battle tanks (MBT).

The longer this war goes on, the longer Russia can't find buyers for its natural gas, which just so happens to be very profitable for Texas, which can sell all the natural gas it produces since Texas is not at war with anybody.

Except, if course, for the bottleneck of turning nat gas into LNG and shipping it overseas.

Russia has no problems selling natgas to China and India. The high prices are a result of the EU and UK shooting themselves in the foot and blowing up the Nordstreams. Now they have to pay ANY price for non-Russian natgas, and since this is a global commodity spot prices rise everywhere.

PS: The USA is at war with Russia.
