Ukraine remembers a famine under Stalin, and points to parallels with Putin

They call it the Holodomor, which means "death by hunger." Ukraine calls it a genocide, and nearly 20 other countries now agree — though not Russia.

At the National Museum of the Holodomor Genocide, one visitor, Roman Vashchenko, 44, spoke in somber tones of suffering old and new. First, he recalled stories his grandmother told him.

"She was one of 10 children. They were not allowed to leave their village. So they didn't know what was happening elsewhere," he said. "But they had a cow, and that's why they survived because they had milk."

Then he spoke of pain that's much more recent.

"In March, the Russians shot and killed my sister and her husband," he said softly. Their sons, ages 12 and 6, survived.

Drawing parallels between Stalin and Putin

One country that shares Ukraine's position is Poland, and its prime minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, visited Kyiv this weekend.

"If we allow Putin to continue, he will become the Stalin of the 21st century," Morawiecki said.

That famine, and today's war, speak to a country that's endured so much hardship.

It explains why the national anthem begins with the words, "Ukraine has not yet perished."

Err, Norway and Denmark were invaded and occupied by Nazi Germany. As for Finland and Ukraine - I can see that you're not interested in nuance, Sig, but for anyone else who's interested: Finland was invaded by the USSR just before WWII and formed an alliance with the Nazis in order to liberate its territory - but after that held back from helping the Nazis, e.g. during the Siege of Leningrad. Ukraine, as a part of the Soviet Union, was invaded and brutalised by the Nazis, and millions of Ukrainians fought in the Red Army against the Nazis. Ukrainian nationalist Bandera and his followers famously sided with the Nazis, hoping (foolishly) to gain an independent Ukrainian state. Some Ukrainians still revere Bandera today for his pro-Ukrainian anti-Soviet resistance, and either overlook the cosying up to the Nazis, or don't care, or even actively approve.

Kremlin propagandists have sought to equate Ukrainians' desire for independence with Nazi ideology ever since, to the ridiculous extent that even under a Jewish President Ukraine is called a "Nazi state".

SECIND: Unfortunately for amnesiac Russians and Signym, today's Ukrainians remember the millions of Ukrainians killed by Russians in the past and know that Russians in the present day will kill millions of Ukrainians if the war is lost.

That's what I call "projection".

Unfortunately for amnesiac SECOND, Ukraine was on the side of the NAZIS in WWII (just like Norway, Finland, and Denmark- another thing SECOND forgot). So: Nazis then, Nazis now?

Russia has been very restrained, protecting civilians and infrastructure as much as possible. SECOND mistakes restraint for weakness

Yep! Cheap labor. That's must be why you like illegals so much. After all, YOU'RE a Texas businessman. They work hard, for cheap!

Always wrong always stupid Signym, like all Russians apparently, do not understand that if your retiring community is larger than your work force, all the social programs collapse. And that’s just the beginning.

The Russian population has long been far smaller than it needs and was still shrinking before the war. Now, with the current exodus their country is soon to be a realized nightmare.

Comrade, I told you so. Can_you_see_me_laughing?

I do understand the mixed heritage of Europe. Poles, altho invaded by Germany, despised Jews as much as the Nazis. Maybe more so. They tolerated the Warsaw ghetto and many concentration camps. Sweden had its Nazi-lovers, which is reflected even recently in "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo". Hungarian Nazi-collaberators were so vicious the German Nazis thought they were an embarassment. Trump Disappointed After Holocaust Denier Tells Him Holocaust Never Happened

PALM BEACH, FL—Appearing crestfallen during a dinner with the white supremacist at his Mar-a-Lago estate, former President Donald Trump is said to have expressed deep sadness last week when he was told by Holocaust denier Nick Fuentes that the Holocaust never happened. “Wait, so all those stories I heard as a child about the systematic slaughter of 6 million Jews—those were just a fantasy?” said Trump, slumping his head and letting out a long sigh as he reportedly began to accept the belief that Adolf Hitler and his Nazis had not rounded up Jews and other marginalized people, shipped them to concentration camps, and exterminated as many as possible. “This is terrible news, what you’re telling me, absolutely terrible. Even Kristallnacht? I guess they just weren’t able to go through with it or something. That’s so sad.” According to sources, Fuentes comforted Trump by assuring him that if they worked together, the Holocaust did not have to remain a fantasy.

It is satire from the Onion. Trump is a walking and talking satire of an American President, but Trumptards don't get the joke. As an excuse for invading Ukraine, Putin called Ukraine's President a Nazi. Trump was a President who insinuated he, too, is a Nazi sympathizer. Nuking Mar-a-Lago would be logical for Putin in the way Russians use "logic" and "reason" and "evidence" to justify what they do to "Nazis" in countries Putin attacks.

A bipartisan group of U.S. senators has intensified pressure on the Biden administration to give Ukraine a top-tier U.S. drone capable of firing four Hellfire missiles or eight Stinger munitions. The 16 senators, led by Iowa Republican Sen. Joni Ernst and West Virginia Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin, called the Gray Eagle MQ-1C “the Ukrainian government’s highest-priority military equipment transfer request” of unmanned aerial systems and said it would have “the potential to drive the strategic course of the war in Ukraine’s favor.”

In their November 22 letter, the senators — including Republicans Lindsey Graham and Chuck Grassley as well as Democrats Richard Blumenthal and Mark Kelly — wrote, “Most importantly, armed [drones] could find and attack Russian warships in the Black Sea, breaking its coercive blockade and alleviate dual pressures on the Ukrainian economy and global food prices.” The senators asserted, “A Russian victory over Ukraine would significantly damage American security and prosperity.”

In their letter, the senators noted that AGM-114 Hellfire missiles “have been reviewed and exported to over twenty-five U.S. partners.” Last week, a Pentagon spokesperson said that “nothing has been ruled out.” The senators asked the White House to respond to their letter no later than November 30.

Ukraine has gained an advantage on the battlefield in part from deploying Western rocket systems that allow it to target Russian positions behind the front lines, partly neutralising Moscow's advantage in artillery firepower.

In the latest example of Western military aid to Kyiv, the Pentagon is considering a proposal by Boeing to supply Ukraine with cheap, small precision bombs that can fit onto rockets with a range of 150 km (94 miles), putting more Russian targets within range.

Boeing's proposed system, dubbed Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb, is one of about a half-dozen plans for getting new munitions into production for Ukraine and America's Eastern European allies, industry sources said.

“The GLSDB is the ultimate solution for a customer that is looking for an affordable, high precision and long range solution”, says Svein Daae, head of marketing of GLSDB at Saab.

The Small Diameter Bomb I (SDB I) is the warhead of the GLSDB. The SDB is a well-proven precision-guided glide bomb that has been in production since 2006. More than 20,000 SDB have been produced and 10,000 used in combat. It is well known for high accuracy and reliability. SDB has users all over the world, including the U.S. Air Force, the Norwegian Air Force, and thirteen other countries.

Even amid murderous Russian raids, western apathy is Kyiv’s deadliest foe

Putin’s missiles are raining down on Ukrainians, but the biggest danger they face is weakening support from the US and Europe

The war and its atrocities are being normalised and, increasingly, discounted. Where is the outrage now? Where the visceral fury? Nine months in, western public opinion is dulled, deadened and desensitised by a daily diet of remote, unceasing, almost routine carnage. The majority still wants Ukraine to prevail. But war fatigue teeters towards apathy.

In Italy and Germany, far-right voices complain they are “fed up” with the war’s costly knock-on effects. Protests against the stand-off with Moscow pockmark central Europe. Conflicted fellow travellers give Putin leave to carry on killing.

Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, says it’s obvious what Putin wants: “Ukraine without Ukrainians.” More than 7.8 million people have fled as refugees since February, the UN estimates. Millions more are internally displaced. Concern grows about a second exodus. “Right now, across the country, people are facing a grim choice: flee or freeze,” said Jan Egeland of the Norwegian Refugee Council.

In Ukraine, public attitudes are hardening. Pride in the Ukrainian nation and pro-western, pro-EU sentiment have never been stronger – including among ethnic minority Russians. Overall, 89% of respondents in one survey accused Russia of genocide.

The Ukrainian people are a formidable force. They have shown they can beat their enemies. But should they fear their friends? A weakening of US and European support, leaving Ukraine out in the cold, is perhaps the most dismaying hazard they face. Putin is counting on it. Might the peoples of the west, for the sake of a quiet life, really get “fed up” with the war to the point where they are ready to ignore or even tolerate mass murder, war crimes and the evisceration of a sovereign nation as the new normal?

Signym likes to combine facts with falsehoods and quote sources that do the same. They twist information in the hopes it misleads those who read it, getting them to believe an assertion that is untrue. Fortunately we know signym, and we know she does that.

Happily, some of us here quote facts as best we can, and the truth is what we argue. Every time sig and some others here post, they document what exposes them to be trolls and liars. They influence nothing but they persist. It’s a sickness.

It is surly a sickness they suffer. Why else would they support Russia when it creates moment by moment, atrocity after atrocity? A war crime after a war crime.

Putin's people rant and rage:

Putin's top propagandists openly talk of Russia losing to Ukraine and being tried in Hague

Russian TV hosts Margarita Simonyan and Vladimir Solovyov openly speculated on the aftermath of a defeat of Russia in Ukraine for Vladimir Putin's inner circle. Simonyan's chilling monologue referenced the war crimes trials at the Hague for the Russian leadership. At the same time, Solovyov boasted that the world would be "turned to ash" hinting at a nuclear strike before the Kremlin would concede defeat.

Simonyan told Russia1: "They are getting ready to take our Crimea. We're doing the only thing we can do in this situation, we are bombing.

"We are bombing every day, we are bombing infrastructure.

"God knows we didn't want this, no one wanted this you and I didn't want this. I know the leadership didn't want this either.

"There again, we are kind, polite and at times meek. We are such softies, so kind, trusting, and meek, but should we be?

"Right now, when we see that the infrastructure is being destroyed every day. The infrastructure that helps Ukraine to fight, to kill our people, on the territories that are now ours.

"I am amazed by our people, and I, unfortunately, know many of them, including those in very high circles, who are afraid of this and are afraid to call things as they are, because of what people over there may think."

Simonyan continued: "We could spit on what they'll think over there."

"People who are afraid of the Hague, listen you should be afraid to lose, to be humiliated and be afraid to betray your people."

"Let me tell you that if we manage to lose, the Hague, whether real or hypothetical, will even come for a street cleaner who sweeps the cobblestone behind the Kremlin."

"Whether one more Kyiv district is without electricity won't change the magnitude of the catastrophe that will befall our country if we manage to do this."

"It's unimaginable."

"If you're afraid of the Hague, stay out of the forest."

Solovyov added "There won't be any Hague if this happens."

Simonyan agreed "There won't be anything at all."

Solovyov concluded: "The whole world will be turned to ashes."

Signym, did you misunderstand that Putin's people are angry about Russians being accused of war crimes when they are only killing civilians for the glory of Russia?

"Right now, when we see that the infrastructure is being destroyed every day. The infrastructure that helps Ukraine to fight, to kill our people, on the territories that are now ours.

In its relentless pursuit of virtue-signaling hills that it is willing to die on within minutes, several months ago the EU had a brilliant idea: let's implement a toothless oil price cap on Russian oil exports, one which actually has zero impact on deeply discounted Russian oil and thus doesn't lead to any more European energy shocks, but because of the optics and the much "lower" permitted transaction price, it will make for great headlines and show the world just how powerful the EU is.

Well, the plan almost worked... until Poland the Baltics forgot to read the fine print, thought that Europe actually does mean business, and blew up the deal.

Recall on Friday, negotiations on the Russian oil price cap were suspended - despite a willingness by most European nations to just cross the checkmark and move on - as Poland and the Baltic states objected to a proposed ceiling of $65.

There was some hope that this opposition was just for show, and that come Monday the Poles would relent after some "closed door" negotiations, Europe would slap a $65 price cap, Russia would continue to sell its oil to China and India, and - quietly - to Europe, and gradually renormalize a fractured oil market where India and China pay a 25% discount for oil while the rest of the world has to pay a premium as an offset.

However, it was not meant to be, and on Monday European Union governments again failed to agree on a price cap on Russian seaborne crude oil, as Poland again insisted that the cap had to be set lower than proposed by the G7 to cut Moscow's ability to finance its invasion of Ukraine, diplomats told Reuters.

"There is no deal. The legal texts have now been agreed, but Poland still can't agree to the price," one diplomat said. No new date for talks has been set yet, diplomats said, even though a far worse outcome may await Europe in just one week: as a reminder, the price cap mechanism is to enter into force on Dec. 5. And if there is no agreement on the G7 price cap idea by next Monday, the EU would implement harsher measures agreed at the end of May - a ban on all Russian crude oil imports from Dec. 5 and on petroleum products from Feb. 5, Polish diplomats said.

That would be a truly catastrophic scenario, and one which could promptly send the price of oil into the stratosphere as JPMorgan explained not too long ago.

To be sure, it's not too late for Poland to fall in line: Hungary and two other landlocked central European states secured exemptions from that ban for the pipeline imports they rely on. Meanwhile, even the G-7 group of nations has proposed a softer version of the EU ban to keep oil supply to the global economy steady, because Russia supplies 10% of the world's oil (see, it was all theater, everything - from day one - and politicians knew it as soon as they did the math).

It proposed that the EU and other global customers keep buying Russian crude, but only if its price is at or below a G7 agreed level. That would cut the Kremlin's revenues. The G7 has proposed a cap of $65-70 per barrel, but Poland and some others argue this will not hurt Moscow because Russian crude is already trading below that range at $63.50, and after today's oil price rollercoaster, the "Russian" price briefly dipped below $60.

With Russian production costs estimated at around $20, Moscow has a very large profit from its oil exports. Poland, Lithuania and Estonia have been pushing for a price cap of $30 per barrel.

And yet, despite consensus that Polish opposition would be overturned, the country's resolve has only hardened: "The Poles are completely uncompromising on the price, without suggesting an acceptable alternative," the EU diplomat said. "Clearly there is growing annoyance with the Polish position."

Which is hilarious because only Poland is adhering to the principle of what the price cap was supposed to achieve - namely choke off Russian oil profits; and yet for all the pompous rhetoric by G-7 nations, everyone is happy to keep the spectacle going knowing full well that this is just one giant virtue-signaling scheme. Everyone, except Poland that is... and as a result the "annoyance" is not with Putin but with the "Polish position" which is keeping fat European technocrats away from their well-deserved 3-star meals for a fake job well done.

Unlike Poland, other countries quickly fell in line when some money transfers were made: Malta, Cyprus and Greece were worried the G7 cap proposal was too low, hitting their large shipping industries, but diplomats said they got some "concessions" in the legal texts and were no longer an obstacle to a deal. Translation: the three countries would be the primary beneficiaries of Russian ship-to-ship transfers, which then flow through to the rest of Europe.

The idea to enforce the G7 cap is to prohibit shipping, insurance and re-insurance companies from handling cargoes of Russian crude around the globe, unless it is sold for less than the price set by the G7 and its allies.

As Reuters concludes, "because the world's key shipping and insurance firms are based in G7 countries, the price cap would make it very difficult for Moscow to sell its oil for a higher price"; what Reuters meant is that only Poland is doing everything in its power to sell its oil for a higher price, when the rest of the EU and G7 have already decided to turn the page on this matter.

When the war finally comes to a close, Russia will say it won the war because hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of Ukrainians died and billions of dollars in property damage were done to Ukraine. In a similar situation, the USA lost the Vietnam War after killing millions of Vietnamese and doing billions in property damage to Vietnam. The difference will be Russia won't admit it lost, while the far more successful USA can admit losing. Not being able to admit failure, and correcting itself, is why Russia has an economy smaller than Canada's.

But now that I finally feel like I'm starting to get ahead of it, I'm able to have downtime without feeling so guilty about it these days. Boy... it will be nice to finally have the house done and only have to worry about regular maintenance stuff. Ukraine is set to receive more than a dozen cutting-edge robotic vehicles that can be used to evacuate battlefield casualties and clear routes of explosive devices, among other tasks, Estonian military contractor Milrem Robotics announced Tuesday. A Russian think tank previously offered a bounty for the capture of one of these vehicles.

The unmanned vehicles, known as Tracked Hybrid Modular Infantry Systems or simply "THeMIS," are being paid for by the German government as part of a deal between Milrem Robotics and German defense company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann. The companies have agreed to deliver 14 of them by the end of the year.

"Casualty evacuation and route clearance are two labour-intensive activities that require the engagement of several people who remain in constant threat of enemy fire," Jüri Pajuste, director of research and development at Milrem Robotics, said in a statement. "Automating these tasks with unmanned vehicles alleviates that danger and allows more soldiers to stay in a safe area or be tasked for more important activities."

An earlier delivery of THeMIS vehicles to Ukraine prompted a Russian think tank tied to the Kremlin's defense establishment to issue a $16,000 bounty — more than a typical Russian soldier receives in a year — for the capture of one "by any means," with the stated intent of studying it and manufacturing similar equipment in Russia itself.

"The conflict in Ukraine has demonstrated that modern warfare is unthinkable without the widespread use of unmanned vehicles," Ruslan Pukhov, the director of Moscow's Centre for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, said in a September statement to Insider, adding that "we are lagging behind."

At the time, a spokesperson for Milrem Robotics told Insider: "We take the bounty as a compliment."

The shipment to Ukraine is said to be of the unarmed variant of the THeMIS system, which can carry a payload of up to 1,650 pounds, enabling it to move multiple casualties at once. But according to the manufacturer, the vehicle can be "rapidly configured from having a transport function to being weaponized."

I predict Russia will sue, calling this theft: The European Commission announced plans to manage frozen Russian assets through a new centralized structure, which it could use to compensate Ukraine. Von der Leyen said the E.U. has blocked 300 billion euros ($311 billion) of Russian Central Bank reserves since the beginning of the invasion, along with 19 billion euros ($19.7 billion) belonging to Russian oligarchs.

I also predict that after years of legal rigamarole, Russia will pay for the damage it did to Ukraine.

Imagine, for a moment, 40 million people waking up every morning and thinking, “What can I do today to save lives and save my country?”

That is happening in Ukraine every single day.

Let’s be clear about what’s on the other side: a regime whose brutality is underestimated, even now. Russia invaded a sovereign country by bombing maternity wards and bread lines. They have raped and tortured children, according to United Nations testimony.
https://edition.cnn.com/2022/11/23/europe/russia-ukraine-zaporizhzhia-

nternational-commission-inquiry-ukraine-51st-session

Preventing those atrocities also has implications beyond Ukraine. Pushing Russia back now will deter it from invading other former Soviet states further down the line. Russia’s flagging fortunes on the battlefield are also giving China a reason to pause amid renewed speculation of invasion of Taiwan.

But the truth is the stakes are even higher. Every day in Ukraine, I am surrounded by modern day versions of the patriots who won American independence. Though they are different struggles, we fought for freedom and self-determination, just like Ukrainians today. They face one of the largest and most extensively resourced armies in the world, just like we did. The righteousness of their cause matches our own from almost 250 years ago.

For Americans, backing Ukraine is a moral and strategic imperative rooted in our values. Republicans and Democrats have always come together to defend those values because we’ve always agreed that allowing corrupt autocracies to thrive breeds chaos and instability that ultimately hurts us at home. That unity is now faltering.

As a new Congress takes office in January, I implore my fellow Americans – and policymakers who decide how we use our resources to advance our values – to recognize that support for Ukraine is support for people just like us, who want the same things we do.

Just a few days ago, a young man in Kherson told me that his country “can survive anything … because we are free.”

The fight for his city and his country is not over, but it’s hard to think of a sentiment that would resonate with Americans more than that.

Biden and virtually the entirety of established political power across the U.S. government is unified in the project of flooding Ukraine with weapons and other military support. Milley, it must be noted, has been a major proponent of heavily arming Ukraine and has advocated continuing to do so indefinitely. Biden currently has a request before Congress for nearly $40 billion in new aid to Ukraine, and the military component of his proposal would, with the swipe of a pen, more than double the entire U.S. expenditure since the invasion began in February.

There is legislation pending in Congress that indicates that the U.S. government believes the Ukraine war may continue for years. On October 11, the Senate Armed Services Committee submitted its amended draft of the National Defense Authorization Act for 2023. Nestled within the draft is a provision that would establish an “emergency” multiyear plan to award massive defense contracts to Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, BAE Systems, and other war corporations to produce weapons for Ukraine . . .

An amendment, spearheaded by New Hampshire Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and co-sponsored by Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn, would allow the Pentagon to award noncompetitive no-bid contracts to arms manufacturers under the plan.

Among the weapons that would be preauthorized for procurement by the Pentagon, according to the legislation, are: 100,000 Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems, 30,000 Hellfire missiles, 36,000 Joint Air-to-Ground missiles, and 700 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems — all manufactured by Lockheed Martin. The list also includes a staggering stream of other missiles, rockets, and ammunition.

Vladimir Putin’s top diplomat claimed the US posed an existential threat to Russia through its support for Ukraine.

Sergei Lavrov, the Kremlin’s foreign minister who has a reputation for wild statements, used a press conference on Thursday to condemn Washington and Nato, while defending Russia’s bombing of Ukraine’s civil infrastructure.

He said the Kremlin’s assault on the Ukrainian power grid was aimed at cutting off the country’s supply of western arms, countering the view held by Kyiv and allies that knocking out heat and electricity for ordinary citizens was an attempt to break the national spirit.

His remarks came hours after Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky said around 6 million Ukrainians were facing winter without power due to a two-month long series of strikes on power plant, substations and transmission lines, among other key energy infrastructure.

On Wednesday night, the governor of Kherson said the region’s recently liberated capital city had lost power after heavy shelling from Russian forces.

The West has been feeding Ukraine weapons throughout the war, lately turning towards the supply of air defence systems to counter the Russian strikes which have rained on cities all over the country, far from the front lines of the war in the south and east.

Mr Lavrov claimed the arms shipments along with training of Ukrainian soldiers on western soil amounted to direct participation in the conflict by Nato, in particular the US.

He went on to charge that Kyiv was taking military orders from “Western masters”, a claim popular among Russian officials during the ten months since Mr Putin ordered the invasion.

Mr Lavrov said: “We attack energy facilities that make it possible for west to pump weapons into Ukraine. So don’t say that the US and Nato are not participants in this war – you are directly participating. Including not only the supply of weapons, but also the training of personnel – you train the Ukrainian military on your territory.” He added: “The vast majority of the targets struck by the Ukrainian Nazi battalion are determined by the Western masters of that regime.”

Though the minister devoted most of the conference to criticising the west, he insisted that Russia was open to the possibility of talks, both with Ukraine and the United States. He said Russia had never walked away from contacts with the US but was yet to hear any “substantive ideas” from Washington, continuing Russia’s attempts to paint itself as being denied a chance at peace, despite being behind the invasion of Ukraine.

Russia could have followed the behavior of Finland and Canada into great wealth and happiness, but Russia chooses to be obnoxious and belligerent, same as you, Signym. Eventually, the "special military operation" mistake will be obvious to even Russians when they fall further behind, just as North Korea, modeling Russia's obnoxious and belligerent behavior, keeps falling further behind South Korea.

Russia was ravaged by the Nazis from 1941-1945, and pillaged by the west from 1990-2000.

That is happening in Ukraine every single day.
blah blah blah

a) Given the emigration of Ukrainians into other nations, especially draft-age men, and people seeking a better life, I doubt that "Ukraine" has 40 million within its former borders. 30 million. Maybe.

b) Somewhere in the realm of 1/3 of the remainder consider themselves more Russian than Ukrainian at this point, given how Kiev has abused them, and

c) of THAT remainder, if Ukraine follows the normal age distribution of EU nations, roughly 1/4 to 1/5 are younger than 10 and probably don't have much political thought. And some portion of the adult population just wants to get through the day with water and food and heat.

What you're left with is about 25 million at best.

It discredits your posts when you begin with nonsense, SECOND. And I don't care if you weren't the one to first publicize it, bc you chose to spread it.

You forgot the two different wars Russia fought with Finland. Stalin didn't learn his lesson from the first war, but Hitler was watching. THAT is THE reason Hitler invaded Russia. If Finland could beat the Russians, so could the Nazis. Stalin could thank the UK and USA for distracting Hitler on the Western Front rather than Germany crushing Russia on a single front.

1) Winter War
30 November 1939 – 13 March 1940
321,000–381,000 total Russian casualties
70,000 total Finnish casualties
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_War

2) Continuation War
890,000–944,000 total Russian casualties
225,000 total Finnish casualties
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continuation_War

The Chinese see how poorly Russia fights Ukraine. China might take a chunk out of Siberia to enlarge itself -- a bit of "Lebensraum" the Nazis would call it.

Andrey Kortunov, one of Russia’s foremost political scientists, paints a bleak picture of the Ukraine war.

Kortunov says the real issue Russia is grappling with is: does it want long-term isolation from the West, or compromise and reintegration? Everything else falls into place depending on the outcome of that fateful decision.

The war in Ukraine is not going as planned for Russia, and Ukraine currently has the upper hand on the ground. Under these circumstances, there is no way Russia will seek to end the fighting.

I listened to the video and I'm left wondering... where, exactly is Russia in trouble??

Video says the frontline is static. Actions are tactical, both sides are waiting for frozen ground. Russian troops are taking territory north and south of Bakhmut.

Kiev, he says, is going to attack south to the Black Sea ... but that is future tense.

Meanwhile, Russia isn't blathering about how they're going to take all of Ukraine, they're promising an offensive at the pace of a slow grind.

So ... ?
