According to the latest official estimate from Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation in Kyiv, the North Korean 11th Army Corps lost around 200 troops killed and wounded in a series of assaults targeting Ukrainian positions in western Russia’s Kursk Oblast last weekend.

At least a few of those casualties were inflicted by explosive first-person-view drones wearing Christmas ornaments. A reindeer. A Santa. An elf. A bird.

Videos of the festive drone strikes, conducted by the Ukrainian 8th Special Purpose Regiment deployed to the southwestern edge of the 250-square-mile salient the Ukrainians carved out of Kursk back in August, appeared online on Tuesday.

The Ukrainian drone operators’ dark humor belies the deadly seriousness of their task. North Korean manpower significantly stiffened Russian assaults in Kursk, allowing the combined Russian-North Korean force to recapture the village of Plekhove, on the eastern edge of the salient, after three costly infantry attacks last weekend.

Altogether, the Russians and North Koreans have around 60,000 troops in and around Kursk. The Ukrainians have just 20,000. But attacking across open ground is always more dangerous than defending from dug-in positions, so the manpower imbalance only confers a slight advantage to the Russians and North Koreans.

And that advantage could erode quickly if Russian and North Korean commanders don’t adapt to Ukrainian methods. The initial assaults over the weekend involved dismounted infantry walking in neat lines across snowy fields without much apparent support from artillery or aircraft. The darkly camouflaged North Koreans stood out against the white snow, making them easy targets for Ukrainian FPV drones and cluster shells.

It’s cold comfort to the North Korean survivors that they at least didn’t march into battle under the false impression that standing still can hide you from a nearby drone operator’s unblinking gaze—like savannah prey blending into the surrounding grass to escape a lion. The North Koreans have been observed diving out of the way of attacking drones—not always successfully.

While some Russian trainees practice dodging incoming FPVs, sometimes with the help of a bizarre “drone on a rope” training aid, others clearly have been instructed to freeze in place when they see or hear a drone approaching.

There is ample evidence of Russian soldiers trying this tactic—and an equal amount of evidence it doesn’t work. Drones’ cameras are that good. And their operators are that skilled.

Dodging may have saved a few North Koreans last weekend, but the 11th Army Corps’ overall casualties were still startling high.

It’s apparent Russian commanders are eager to obscure the scale of the losses. “Despite Russian attempts to hide North Korean failures through quick evacuation, videos of strikes on North Korean soldiers, their failures and their corpses are already in the public domain,” Kovalenko stated.

Putin reiterated during an interview with Kremlin journalist Pavel Zarubin on December 22 that Russia should have started its full-scale invasion of Ukraine earlier than February 2022 but added that it is impossible to say exactly when that should have been.[1]

Putin blamed Ukraine and the West for "misleading" Russia and not implementing the Minsk II Accords, which Putin claimed gave the West time to prepare Ukraine for future "military actions" against Russia. Putin claimed that Russia should have "prepared for this" and "chosen the right moment" to begin its full-scale invasion of Ukraine and not "waited for the moment when it was no longer possible to do nothing." Putin failed to mention that Ukraine worked to strengthen its military as a defensive response to Russia's 2014 annexation of Ukrainian territory and the launch of a war in the country's east. Putin made similar remarks during his December 19 Direct Line televised press conference wherein he claimed that he would have made the decision to launch his full-scale invasion earlier if he could do it over again.[2]

Putin also claimed on December 19 that Ukraine did not abide by the Minsk II Accords and that Russia "spontaneously" invaded Ukraine in 2022. The Minsk II Accords were notably extremely favorable to Russia, placing no obligations on Moscow – which was party to the negotiations as an alleged neutral mediator.[3] The Accords established a "ceasefire" that Russian proxies continually violated with Russian support.[4]

Complaints about Putin are growing among Russian military and business leaders

“You can bluff on the international arena for a while – but make sure you don’t fall for your own deceptions”, ran an op-ed in the broadsheet Kommersant, penned by a retired colonel close to the military leadership. He then used Syria as an example of how “in today’s world, victory is only possible in a quick and fleeting war. If you effectively win in a matter of days and weeks, but cannot quickly consolidate your success in military and political terms, you will eventually lose no matter what you do.” Though the piece didn’t mention Ukraine, Vasily Gatov, a media analyst at the University of Southern California, told me he thought it was a message from the general staff to the Kremlin: be realistic about what we can achieve in Ukraine, too.

Assad’s fall is not just a blow to Russia’s interests in the Middle East but to the essence of Putin’s power, which has always been about perception management. His early spin doctor Gleb Pavlovsky once explained to me how, when the Kremlin was weak domestically in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Russian leaders learned to dominate TV to create ersatz grandeur. The Kremlin couldn’t really control the regional governors at that point, but it could give the sense that the president ruled everything by being omnipresent in the media. Since then, Putin has taken perception management to the international stage, trying to tell a story that he is leading a new generation of authoritarian regimes destined to inherit the earth. But that image suddenly looks shaky. Now is the time to apply more pressure before he can patch things up and project his superpower movie once again.

Despite Kremlin claims that all is dandy with the economy, Russians aren’t buying it, complaining online that inflation is making their salaries feel worthless.

The Kremlin will be more than aware of these complaints throughout society, from military bloggers to business people. The Kremlin worries when people don’t do as it commands. The Russian president often recalculates when he sees that he can’t control perceptions and behaviours – thus, he abandoned mobilisation efforts after the last attempts saw up to a million young Russians flee the country.

As the west increases pressure points on Russia, the aim is not some magical regime change. The point is to make the leadership feel so unsure it rethinks what it can get away with. For that, the pressure on Putin has to come thick and fast, with one blow coming after another in unexpected succession, unravelling the stories of international influence he has spun. Ukraine is taking direct action: with drone strikes at military production sites ever deeper within Russia and the spectacular assassination of a Russian general in the heart of Moscow. But its democratic allies can do much more by relearning the art of economic and political warfare.

Joe Biden’s flawed approach was always to wait until after a Russian crisis, and then let Putin recover and regroup. Can Donald Trump try something more dynamic? Or will he believe Putin’s bluster even more than Biden? The paradox would then be that the US believed in Putin’s myth of imperviousness more than many Russians. The most important “perception management” Vladimir Putin is banking on is the one aimed at the White House itself.

In contemporary American rhetoric, “democracy” and “the market” are treated as almost synonymous terms. … Russians (and most non-Americans) are simply baffled by this vision. … Very, very few Russians impart positive ethical content to market forces, and unfortunately more of these are mafia than economists.

Then came Merry’s harsher indictment of his bosses and their associates:

Sadly, very few of the multitudes of American “advisors” in Russia since the Bolshevik demise acquainted themselves with even the most basic facts of the country whose destiny they propose to shape. As a result, to say that America is wearing out its welcome in Russia is no longer a prediction, it is a descriptive fact. Even the most progressive and sympathetic of Russian officials have lost patience with the endless procession of what they call “assistance tourists” who rarely bother to ask their hosts for an appraisal of Russian needs. … Russians of all political persuasions are also less than charmed by the frequently expressed American attitude that their country is a social-economic laboratory to test academic theories. If there is one thing Russians learned to distrust in 74 years of Socialism, it is economic theory and theorists.

His conclusion:

We are forced to choose: Is our priority in Russia fledgling democracy or market economics? In the years remaining in this century, we cannot have both. … Skeptical as they are of their politicians, Russians for the most part do want their country to be a democracy of some kind. While very few Russians regret the passing of the Cold War or wish to resume an adversarial stance toward the United States, equally few appreciate the missionary zeal or the superior tone which pervade our monologue toward them.

Merry was not allowed to send his memo to Washington as an official embassy statement. “It would give Larry Summers a heart attack,” he was told, Summers being the Treasury Department official most wedded to the shock-therapy policy.

At the time Merry wrote his memo and Steinberg wrote his reply, the U.S. policy of pushing free markets, on the assumption that Russian politics were ready for them, was still wildly premature. Not only that, Merry warned, persisting in this policy would spawn a backlash. It will “assist Russian extremists to undermine the country’s nascent democracy and will encourage a renewal of Russia’s adversarial stance toward the outside world.”

One cannot draw a straight line from Merry’s critique to the rise of Vladimir Putin, the shutdown of Russian free speech, the revival of oppression, and the invasion of Ukraine. All those things might have happened regardless of U.S. policy. The crushing weight of a thousand years of Russian history can’t be lifted so easily.

Satellite imagery indicates that North Korea increased its arms production and is boosting supplies to Russia for its war against Ukraine. Approximately 200 ammunition factories in North Korea are currently operating at full capacity.

The report points that earlier suspicions about North Korea offloading old weapon stockpiles have shifted, with evidence now indicating Pyongyang is supplying newly manufactured weapons to Russia.

For instance, the 240-mm multiple-launch rocket systems were recently equipped with new guidance and control systems.

Additionally, North Korea's 600-mm KN-25 rocket launchers were upgraded earlier this year with the support of Russian technicians. "The weapon, first tested in 2019, blurs the distinction between a multiple launch rocket system and a short-range ballistic missile," the publication highlights.

SI Analytics indicates that rapid construction at the site includes new buildings, likely intended to conceal loading operations. Kim Jong Un has visited the facility multiple times, issuing orders for serial production of tactical missiles.

This year, rail shipments of weapons reached record levels at the Tumangang-Hasan crossing on the North Korea-Russia border. Train traffic has reportedly tripled since Kim's meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in September last year.

A South Korean official told The Wall Street Journal that the cooperation is reciprocal, with Russia providing North Korea with air defence systems and sending technicians to support its satellite reconnaissance programmes.

Reportedly taking advantage of the temporary confusion resulting from a rotation of Russian troops, a small Ukrainian force advanced into Kamyanske, a village on the Russian side of the front line in southern Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Oblast.

The village with a pre-war population of just 2,000, surrounded on the north and west by the swamps adjacent to the Dnipro River, is one of the few places where Ukrainian forces have advanced in recent weeks.

But Ukrainian gains may be fleeting—and could also be indicative of some serious problems within the Ukrainian command structure.

Why are the Ukrainians risking lives and resources on a comparatively meaningless action in a sector that’s a relative backwater, when critical Ukrainian strongpoints in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk Oblast are under relentless Russian assault? Shouldn’t every available soldier and weapon be heading east? Why aren’t the Ukrainian regional commands prioritizing the right brigades in the right sectors?

Maryana Bezuhla, a member of the Ukrainian parliament, is among the most vocal critics of Ukrainian military planning—and she’s had enough.

“We are no different from the Russians, [conducting] ‘meat assaults,’ restoring positions in the lowlands, often without additional intelligence and cooperation of units, et cetera,” Bezuhla wrote on Sunday, as the tiny Ukrainian force cowering in Kamyanske was under attack from Russian drones.

One Russian blogger expected the platoon of Ukrainians who infiltrated Kamyanske to retreat, surrender or die before too long. “The enemy's presence zone has been localized—they are currently being cleared,” Romanov wrote, attributing the Ukrainians’ isolation to the hard-to-navigate swampy terrain. “The enemy is dispersed in groups of three and hiding in houses. The houses are being dismantled.”

The likely outcome is that the Ukrainian units north of Kamyanske, anchored by the new 141st Mechanized Brigade, are going to bury tens of soldiers without making any lasting gains.

Bezuhla blamed the army’s senior officers. “The army is collapsing and rotting precisely because of the quality of management and decisions made at the top.”

Russian state newswire RIA Novosti reported on December 24 that it saw a letter that the Russian Central Bank sent in response to a request from Russian State Duma Deputy Denis Parfenov wherein the Central Bank stated that the lowering of the key interest rate in order to stimulate demand, when "demand already exceeds supply," is "dangerous."[8] The Central Bank stated that Russia's current labor, equipment, and transport shortages mean that cheap loans will not immediately give producers additional resources and will only intensify competition for resources and increase prices. The Russian Central Bank raised the key interest rate to 21 percent in October 2024, and the bank's head, Elvira Nabiullina, has recently stated that the bank may raise it further.[9]

There was, reportedly, a Ukrainian drone swarm attacking Grozny at the time.

Had there been a Christmas truce, this wouldn't have happened.

Airspace of a city under attack should be closed off and airplanes diverted elsewhere. I'm not sure how much warning time authorities have to do that, tho, and I don't suppose we'll know any time soon, since that would reveal sensitive information about Russia's - or anyone's - detection capabilities.

Nearly evrything that you source from Understanding War is wrong, SECOND.

Zelensky's term ended May 2024. Seven months ago. So why is he still in office? There is no Constitutional allowance (yes, Ukraine has a Constitution) for a President extending his own term of office by declaring martial law.

So technically, he isn't a legitimate President.

It's a question Ukrainians have not addressed bc, altho Zelensky is wildly unpopular, Ukrainians have a lot more to think about, like water, heat, electricity, and safety.

But if anyone wants to negotiate with Ukraine, it's going to have to be with a legitimate representative.

At dusk one afternoon last week, two dozen wounded North Korean soldiers were brought to one of the main hospitals in the Russian city of Kursk.

They were ushered into a specially designated floor, guarded by police, with access limited to translators and medical personnel.

“We were told in the morning to prepare for a special type of patient,” said one of the medical staff at the hospital who treated North Koreans.

“We’d heard rumours that North Koreans were fighting there, but I didn’t believe it. No one had actually seen them before,” the medic said.

“I thought it was all fake news until they arrived,” the medic said, adding that most of them had shrapnel injuries.

A second medic at the scene said communication with the North Koreans was “impossible” without translators. They added that some North Koreans looked “frightened and nervous”.

Both medics requested to speak on condition of anonymity, fearing retribution for discussing the topic.
