Lithuania's parliamentary speaker Juozas Olekas said peace with Russia can be secured only from a position of strength and warned that unless Moscow is stopped in Ukraine, it will continue its aggression deeper into Europe.

Olekas, a surgeon by training and a longtime figure in Lithuanian politics, has twice served as defense minister and health minister and now serves as speaker of the Seimas. He said Lithuania's approach to security is shaped by its history of Soviet occupation and by a belief that Russia's imperial attitudes extend beyond the Kremlin.

Born in Siberia after his family was deported there by Soviet authorities, Olekas grew up with the memory of occupation, an experience that still shapes Lithuania's support for Ukraine.

The USA is facing a serious crisis in its analytical understanding of war. I thought it could not get any worse than it was in 2022, when practically everyone from the President on through the Pentagon, the IC and the think tank community judged that Ukraine would be conquered swiftly by some awesomely powerful Russian military machine. However, what we are continuing to see from the USG and the analytical community makes it apparent that things are no better and might be worse. Fundamental mistakes are being made continually, as we see in the present war with Iran.

However, maybe the greatest mistake of the last few years has been in not understanding how the war between Ukraine and Russia was developing. What we have seen repeatedly is a desperation to hold onto past, failed notions of how US policy makers and analysts believed war should be fought. They first kept assuring us that tank-led assaults were the key to military success, even when tanks were getting massacred by their thousands by cheaper systems. Then they assured us that Ukraine really did not need ranged systems, F-16s, etc, etc, all of which, once deployed have turned out to be vital to Ukraine’s war effort.

While these were all bad, maybe the most catastrophic US error, one that had Ukraine listened to it could have led to Ukrainian defeat, was the widespread insistence that to deal with personnel shortages, Ukraine needed to draft its 18-24 year old males in mass and send them to the front. This was a widely spread narrative, from the top of the USG through the think-tank community. Indeed, it was regularly used to cast aspersions on Ukraine’s war strategy and even to try and press Ukraine into ceding more territory.

Well, thankfully, Ukraine disagreed. It protected its younger population and instead invested heavily across society in drones, UGVs, and other unmanned systems to try and reduce the number of soldiers on the front and save its population. That effort is now paying massive dividends and the world is sitting up and taking notice. In the last week, the Ukrainians even seized a Russian position using machines alone, and more and more European leaders are talking about the war heading in Ukraine’s favor.

Quite why the US has failed repeatedly to understand war is one of the greatest questions/problems we face. Instinctively, I believe that fighting a war is too easy for the US, but that means the US has lost the ability to distinguish between fighting and winning. At the same time, the US, with its massive military machine, huge IC, and inflated think-tank community, has confused being big with being smart. Actually, too many of this grouping thinks it understands war because the US is so strong. This arrogance has led it to be probably the worst community for understanding war in analytical history.

To outline this problem, I will talk a little about the Ukrainian machine-led assault, what it means, and then contrast it to what we were hearing, ad nauseam, from US sources over the last two years. The disconnect is jarring, but needs to be faced. If the US does not improve its understanding of war, it will continue to fail in the terrible ways that it has now for decades.

A few days ago, a notable event happened in the course of not just the Russo-Ukraine War but also in modern, machine-defined war. The Ukrainians assaulted and took a Russian position using only machines—both UAVs and UGVs (drones and pilotless land vehicles). Not a single Ukrainian soldier was put in harm's way, while the Russians ended up losing humans, some of whom were even filmed surrendering to the Ukrainian machines. Russia’s defence ministry has released what it said were the names and addresses of Ukrainian-linked enterprises across Europe involved in the production of military drones on April 16.

“The European public should both clearly understand the true reasons of threats to their security and know the addresses and locations of ‘Ukrainian’ and ‘joint’ enterprises producing UAVs and components for Ukraine on the territory of their countries,” the ministry said.

[I’m guessing that Russians believe with all their little hearts that destroying Ukrainians with drones is fair, but Ukrainians destroying military targets and refineries in Russia with drones is totally unfair. The Russians got things backwards and upside down about who started this war in the first place, so it not surprising they are confused about the fairness of many other things.]

Ukrainian defenders managed to destroy all cruise missiles launched by Russian forces over the past day during the latest attack. F-16 fighter jets took part in intercepting the targets, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a doorstep briefing with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten.

He noted that Ukraine’s air defense systems are performing very well, with 90% of aerial targets being destroyed. At the same time, the only major problem for Ukraine is a shortage of interceptors for ballistic missiles.

"We have interceptors, we have F-16s, we have other systems such as Patriot, IRIS-T, NASAMS, we are destroying (drones and missiles — ed.). For example, today our F-16s and other systems destroyed all cruise missiles," he said.

Zelenskyy also added that he discussed the shortage of ballistic interceptors during his meeting with the Dutch Prime Minister.

Earlier, Yurii Ihnat, head of communications for the Ukrainian Air Force, emphasized that F-16s played a significant role in intercepting Russian cruise missiles on April 15–16.

Air defense operations

According to Ukraine’s Air Force, on the evening of April 15, Russian forces launched 20 Kh-101 cruise missiles at Ukraine.

Later, Russia used five Iskander-K cruise missiles in the attack.

The Air Force reported that 19 out of 20 Kh-101 missiles and 4 out of 5 Iskander-K missiles were shot down.

Hornet and Bumblebee are likely the first mass-produced representatives of a new class: autonomous kamikaze drones with AI guidance that don't require manual guidance. Their appearance on the front lines and deep in the rear is already changing the calculus for both sides: the rear is no longer a safe zone, and traditional electronic warfare systems are losing some of their effectiveness. The strike-wing “Hornet/Martian-2” is the most dangerous threat to logistics in our rear

Our friends from one unit provided us with an almost intact UAV “Martian-2” for study (the exact name is in question; some also call it “Hornet”).

This drone is very actively terrorizing our rear areas; there are confirmed cases of our vehicles being hit at distances of >50 km from the line of contact (Mariupol highway). The main activity is in the Pokrovsk direction (Selydove/Ocheretyne), but they are encountered everywhere, including the Belgorod direction.

On our channel, we will gradually publish a detailed teardown report of all components of this drone, but for now we will provide a very preliminary description (there may be errors at this stage).

• The drone is assembled to a very high standard; this is evident even from the cabling used, which is aviation-grade. Overall, this suggests either that the drone is assembled in the West, or that the enemy has significantly increased the quality of its drone production.

• The drone is equipped with two daytime cameras (forward-facing and downward-facing) and possibly a very effective terminal guidance system; the lower camera may be used for auto-targeting. Despite having daytime cameras, there are recorded cases of attacks at dusk, meaning there may also be variants with low-light or thermal cameras. The drone's priority targets are our equipment and vehicles, but in some cases it has switched to attacking infantry (so small groups and forward positions may also be among its priority targets).

• Nets over logistics routes are largely ineffective against this drone.

• The warhead and initiation system will be analyzed separately, but typically it is a cumulative-fragmentation warhead weighing around 1.5 kg, with detonation occurring almost 100% of the time. As a result, intact examples are very rare—usually only "tail sections" remain.

• In most cases, the drone flies at low altitudes (around 200 m) along our transport routes, then locks onto a target and strikes. It approaches the target very quietly, and typically not everyone has time to react.

• Communication and frequencies were previously analyzed in one of the Telegram channels; we add that the range may be very wide: besides 2000 or 3000 MHz, it may also include 1700-1900 and 160-1801 450-480. Communication uses digital modems that are not detected by standard drone detectors; additionally, the drone likely supports a MESH system, meaning it is networked with other such wings.

• The drone is equipped with a simple GNSS antenna, but it is unclear whether it is used for the entire flight or only for marking the launch point.

From these preliminary data, it can be concluded that this is an extremely dangerous UAV: it is hard to hear, not detected by standard detectors, operates deep in our rear, and is resistant to EW. Additionally, since it is a fixed-wing aircraft, it is very difficult to shoot down with small arms (unless hitting the flight controller/warhead/battery). The best countermeasure is an FPV interceptor or a “tree” (anti-drone obstacle).

Ukraine is developing its own version of Russia's Kinzhal air-launched ballistic missile. If the air-launched version of Fire Point's FP-9 missile actually works, it could significantly expand the area of Russia where Ukrainian forces can inflict lasting damage on air bases, factories, oil refineries and other strategic targets.

Fire Point has been working on the FP-9 for many months. But it wasn't until recently that Fire Point chief engineer Denys Shtilerman revealed that the ground-launched ballistic missile could eventually evolve into an air-launched ballistic missile in the same class as the 4,300-kg Kinzhal.

Ranging as far as 850 km with an 800-kg warhead, the precision-guided FP-9 is a bigger version of Fire Point's FP-7 ground-launched ballistic missile, which ranges 200 km with a 150-kg warhead. The FP-7 is already in testing. Fire Point plans to begin testing of the FP-9 as early as this summer.

Launching a ballistic missile from the air instead of the ground extends its range by potentially hundreds of kilometers.

Zemtsov was an outspoken supporter of Russia’s second invasion of Ukraine. In a Nov. 5 2025 post he called for Ukrainian drone pilots captured by Russian forces to be murdered on the spot – a by-definition war crime.

Zemtsov’s final post, placed on his blog late on Wednesday, was a photograph of a military cap with a Russian Federation flag, and a military shoulder badge saying “As you are leaving, kill them all.”

Ukraine is introducing a universal ground control station for fiber-optic drones for the first time. The solution is intended to replace multiple separate control systems and simplify operators’ work on the front line, Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said.

Fiber-optic drones have become one of the key strike assets, especially in conditions of intensive electronic warfare (EW) use. At the same time, their effectiveness is reduced by the fragmentation of control systems.

Fedorov explained that “dozens of different solutions from various manufacturers are operating simultaneously on the front line.” As a result, operators are forced to carry 3–5 different systems, which creates additional workload and reduces time available for mission execution.

Creating a unified control standard to reduce fragmentation in UAV systems

To address this issue, the Ministry of Defense, together with manufacturers, has been developing a unified standard for several months. UAV efficiency advisor Serhii Sternenko also joined the process.

Technical requirements for analog ground control stations, still the most widely used in the military, have now been defined. A prototype close to a production-ready model has been developed and will be delivered to units this week for combat testing.

The Kremlin would have to send to their death around 1.5 million more troops to fully occupy the territory of Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Andrii Melnyk, says. Knowing this, Russia wants to take the region through diplomacy, as per Ukraine's Foreign Ministry.

According to him, the current pace of Russia’s offensive shows minimal territorial gains at an extremely high human cost. At the same time, more than 20% of Donetsk Oblast remains under Ukrainian control, despite Russian ruler Vladimir Putin's demands to hand over these territories without a fight.

“This is outright blackmail. We are talking about 6,000 square kilometers. Russia is demanding that Ukraine abandon one of its most fortified defensive lines,” Melnyk emphasizes.

Demand for capitulation meets entrenched defense

The diplomat stressed that behind these defensive lines are towns and villages with civilian populations who would be placed at risk in the event of a withdrawal.

“How can we leave hundreds of thousands of these people at the mercy of barbarians?” he says, highlighting the humanitarian dimension.

According to his estimates, the calculation is based on an average of about 254 Russian soldiers killed per square kilometer of advance. This “arithmetic of war” leads to the projection of roughly 1.5 million additional losses just to capture the rest of the region.

Strategic pressure instead of military cost

Melnyk noted that at current rates, Russia would theoretically have to lose up to 122 million people to fully occupy Ukraine — a figure that is effectively impossible given the country’s demographics.

“It is difficult to describe the loss of over 122 million lives as a ‘victory,’” he adds.

Against this backdrop, the Kremlin is attempting to achieve its objectives through diplomatic pressure and pseudo-negotiations, as a military path would entail an unsustainable cost for Russia.

He also added that, at the current pace, Russia could need up to 183 years to fully subjugate Ukraine.
