Because there's some evidence that it's a true statement (from sources other than Trump) and no evidence that it's a "lie". Basically, you decided it was a "lie" because ... well, you hate Trump so ANYthing he says is a "lie", according to you. No. An "investigation" can include looking at documents, looking at physical evidence, and taking testimony, USUALLY IN THE OPEN, but once it consists primarily of secret surveillance then, yes, that's "spying". Because secret surveillance by another name is "spying". Look up any definition of "spying" that you want.

He got us out of TPP and TTIP, NAFTA is stalled in the water.

He has instituted tariffs on steel and aluminum.

Despite his belligerent statements about Iran and Syria and missile firings on irrelevant Syria installations he has quietly withdrawn funding (and interdicted funding sources) from various CIA ops in the Mideast including the so-called "white Helmets" and "moderate rebels" and the opium trail thru Pakistan.

He may be about to develop a breakthrough negotiation with DPRK.

He moved the American embassy to Jerusalem ...

And broke the nuclear deal with Iran.

He is SERIOUS about getting illegals out of the USA and keeping them out.

He signed a big tax cut for corporations.

And he's getting the EU so pissed off at us about Russian and Iran sanctions and tariffs on EU steel that he might make THEM quit US, rather than us quitting them, because (according to his statements) NATO is an irrelevant money-suck that only benefits Europe.

Now, you may agree or disagree with what he's "done" but this is just a short list, off the top of my head. Apparently, while you were maintaining your laser-like focus on a made-up issue, you took your eye off the ball.

"missile firings on irrelevant Syria installations" He seems to have handed over the reins and expense to Israel. Yanno, making our allies pay their way.
Due to this change in lineup, Russia seems to have moderated its response, not responding except to direct attacks on Russian positions, and sometimes, not even then. Russia agreed to not deploy its T400 systems. Perhaps that was a mutual decision, to avoid escalation.

I brought this from the other thread, which I posted more than a year ago (Feb 2017). Much of this was drawn from Trump's openly stated positions, so there was no secret what Trump wanted to do, and where I agreed or disagreed with his positions. Overall Trump is doing ... or trying to do ... what he said he would. Except that he got caught up in a war with the deep state, since they've done everything to torpedo his administration. And my opinion of his positions remains pretty much the same, unless he pulls some big ginormous rabbits out of his hat, in which case my opinion of him will change.

Seeing as he is mostly heading in the directions he said he would BEFORE he was elected, I don't think I would characterize him as being a "liar".

Things I KNEW I was going to be against
1) ENVIRONMENT AND ENERGY
However, by withdrawing from TPP and TTIP, the venue for disagreement is in the US courts and Congress, not secret tribunals in Brussels or Singapore. Different states can adopt different policies, and (strangely) it may be the liberal states arguing about "states' rights", which I find to be a positive development.

Things I suspected I might be against
1) REGULATORY POLICIES
Yes, I know that businesses - especially small businesses - face a welter of regulations. However, businesses have proven to be incapable of regulating themselves. There's a reason why regulatory agencies came into being in the first place. We all know what we want out of businesses: don't sell us contaminated products, don't shit up the environment, don't brutalize your workers. Why can't we simplify?

2) TAX POLICIES
I have no idea what will come out of the Trump administration. Our tax laws desperately need reform, but I doubt that Trump's reforms would match mine.

3) CHINA AND IRAN
Unnecessarily confrontational, militarily. China is an economic adversary, not a military one. Iran isn't our enemy at all, it's Saudi Arabia's - but who the heck cares?

Things I suspected I might be for

1) BORDER TAX
However, there will be a lot of pushback from out "trading partners" involving possibly the WTO

so it may have to be framed as a Value Added Tax reform, to make our taxes more like other nations and to level the playing field.

Issues that are complete unknowns:

Obamacare needs to be replaced, but it depends on with what. If Trump makes the government negotiate for best drug prices, he will do more to save Medicare than all of the liberal hand-wringing. It would also help Obamacare be more cost-effective. But what comes out is unpredictable.

Hey Signy

I voted against Trump for one reason, and that was because Hillary's neo-CON anti-Russia agenda looked like an existentially dangerous path.

Aside from that, I was OK with his immigration stance and more than OK with his plans to drop out of international trade agreements.

I was pretty sure I was going to be against everything else, but compared to nuclear annihilation, it's survivable in the short-term.


So I find Syria, as the bellweather of Russian relations troubling. It looks like one step forward, one step sideways, and one step back. The appointment of Bolton also doesn't bode well.

I'm willing to see how this all goes. But since I'm not an optimist by nature, and since every event is presented with equally plausible, but opposite, spins, I'm going to give the downside more credence until it looks otherwise.


But, speaking of the democrats - when the hell are they going to put on their big boy pants and get to work?

That's a good question. We're coming on two straight years of a temper tantrum and nothing has changed. All the celebrating about the house and senate supposedly going Democrat seems to even have died down. I'm not sure how much anybody even believes that at this point. I'm actually hoping that at least one of them flip, since as I've said many times before I think our two political parties do the most damage to the nation when they control all 3 branches.

The Democrats in 2018 are completely lost. They have no real message, and they're still feeling the backlash of all of their policies and push back against their current way of going about issues.

Those people were from shitholes. If you don't think so, why don't you move there and help them out instead of virtue signaling from a country that's not a shithole.

Keeping illegals out of the country isn't "racism", it's making your borders mean something. I didn't assume that Obama was a "racist" when that picture was taken, I assume he was doing his duty as President... to yanno, keep the interests of the CITIZENS of the USA foremost, over the interests of non-citizens. I don't assume that Trump is a racist either.

Screening immigrants from jihadist-ridden failed states with sketchy documentation isn't "racism" either. And do you know what? That photo exists because recently, perhaps during the primaries, children not accompanied by adults came here by the tens of thousands. Mostly from El Salvador I think. Anyone besides me remember that?

Health and Human Services was tasked with finding beds for them. They not only did not have a budget that would cover the cost, they did not have the housing. They had to find or create it as fast and however they could. This was in no way Obama needlessly or maliciously separating children from their parents. It was done as humanly as possible at the time. It did make for a bad photo opt though.

Those here always defending Trump G are devoid of class.

I'm going to get more huffy than usual, but I want you to know what I think, and why.

As I mentioned in another thread, for about the past couple of years we hired a homeless guy to do our gardening. We paid him $20 an hour, coffee or cold Powerade in the AM depending on how hot the morning, lunch with us at the kitchen table, cold Powerade in the afternoon. When his bicycle (his main mode of transportation) was stolen from our driveway we bought him another. We would give him things or extra money from time to time. It wasn't much; it was really a kind of pitiful lifeline, but I got to know him rather well chatting at lunch. I can't imagine living under the circumstances that he was living under.

And then, listening to NPR, there are the complaints of the illegal immigrants ... people taken into custody who didn't get good food. Or didn't get good prenatal care. Or didn't get to see a dentist, or their family, or a lawyer and I though Yeah, I know it's terrible but ... What the FUCK!?!!? We treat illegal immigrants BETTER than our own citizens, who we allow to live under the worst circumstances, without medical or vision or dental care (you should see this guy's teeth) ... why in hell are we so anxious to cater to people who have crossed our border, who we didn't invite, when we allow our own citizens to fester and die under underpasses and in riverbeds?

So you'll excuse me if I don't cry ... oh boo hoo ... for illegal immigrants. Let's take care of our own first. And BTW, do you know what this homeless guy (who is, BTW, of Hispanic origin and who speaks fluent Spanish) said? He said: I've heard them talk, how you come over the border and have a couple of kids and get on welfare. So yeah, no more "anchor babies" either.

Trump’s not a liar. He’s a madman.

"Even by President Trump’s standards, this Memorial Day weekend was memorable for the sheer volume of balderdash, bunk, poppycock and patent nonsense flowing from the White House.

Balderdash: Trump went after the “failing and corrupt” New York Times for citing a senior White House official “who doesn’t exist” and admonished the newspaper to “use real people, not phony sources.” It turned out the senior official in question had spoken at a White House briefing arranged by Trump’s aides and attended by dozens of reporters.

Bunk: Trump attacked “the 13 Angry Democrats” working for Robert S. Mueller III, apparently referring to prior party registration. But Mueller himself is a Republican, appointed by a Republican who was himself appointed by Trump.

Poppycock: He called for “pressure on the Democrats to end the horrible law that separates children from there [sic] parents once they cross the Border into the U.S.” There is no such law, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions has acknowledged that family separation “inevitably” results from Trump’s “zero-tolerance” enforcement policy.

Patent nonsense: “Who’s going to give back the young and beautiful lives (and others) that have been devastated and destroyed by the phony Russia Collusion Witch Hunt?” Trump asked. I can picture the GoFundMe campaign: “Paul Manafort, a young and beautiful 69-year-old, had a promising career ahead of him selling access to the White House before he was cruelly indicted .?.?. ”

Early in this weekend’s monsoon of malarkey, New York Times White House reporter Maggie Haberman tweeted that Trump told “demonstrable falsehoods” — and she was roundly ridiculed on Twitter for failing to say Trump was lying. She defended herself by saying Trump’s pronouncements “can be hard to label” because “he often thinks whatever he says is what’s real.”

Haberman is right, but there’s another reason not to label Trump’s untruths “lies”: Calling him a liar lets him off easy. A liar, by definition, knows he’s not telling the truth. Trump’s behavior is worse: With each day it becomes more obvious he can’t distinguish between fact and fantasy. It’s an illness, and it’s spreading.

I’ve been writing for two years about his seeming inability to separate truth from falsehood: from his claim that he opposed the Iraq War to his belief that his rainy inauguration was “really sunny.” The man who ghostwrote Trump’s “Art of the Deal” marveled at Trump’s “ability to convince himself that whatever he is saying at any given moment is true.”

Trump has acknowledged as much himself. In a 2007 deposition — he was suing author Timothy O’Brien for asserting that Trump’s net worth wasn’t in the billions but in the range of $150 million to $250 million — Trump was asked how he calculates his net worth.

“My net worth fluctuates,” Trump said, “and it goes up and down with the markets and with attitudes and with feelings, even my own feelings. .?.?. I would say it’s my general attitude at the time that the question may be asked.”

Of course, Trump’s “feelings” don’t change his net worth any more than they change the weather. That he thinks they do is his problem — and ours.

Writing last week for NBCNews.com, a professor of cognitive neuroscience at University College London, along with a researcher, offered an explanation for Trump’s mendacity.

Noting that the daily average number of Trump falsehoods has been rising since he took office (as measured by The Post’s Fact Checker), the professor, Tali Sharot, pointed to the biological process of “emotional adaptation.” People tend to feel uncomfortable when they tell lies, but research has found that the discomfort is reduced each time a person lies — thereby increasing the frequency of lies.

Trump’s fictions are so pain-free that they may not feel like lies to him — honestly. And, ominously, they may seem less glaring to others over time. Sharot noted that people “may desensitize to the president’s falsehoods in the same way that they do to overused perfume, making them less likely to act to correct this pattern of behavior.”

You can see this in the repeated failure of congressional Republicans to call out Trump’s untruths, when they obviously know better. And you can see it in administration officials’ determination to support whatever Trump says, no matter how ludicrous. (The White House held a briefing Tuesday to support Trump’s attempt to blame Democrats for immigrant family separation.) Trump may not be able to separate fact from fiction, but those who knowingly back up his falsehoods are liars.

So what should we call the twaddle and claptrap Trump spouts? I propose “Trumpery.” Defined as “worthless nonsense,” it also has a felicitous echo of “Trumped up.”

Go ahead and say he’s lying, if you think so. To me, his facility with fallacy and his pain-free fibbery aren’t sympto­matic of a liar but of a madman."

It was HIS POLICY DECISION. It was part of many of his stump speeches. It was NOT some secret hidden agenda. This morning, President Trump floated a series of big lies about the Russia investigation. They aren’t normal or conventional lies. They are profoundly absurd exercises in up-is-downism — that is, enormous, preposterously audacious falsehoods that run directly contrary to facts that are widely known and ascertainable with great ease.

Which is the whole point.

First, Trump quoted Rush Limbaugh saying that the FBI never told Trump that the Russians tried to infiltrate his campaign, which Trump called a “hoax.” This is something that Trump has repeatedly floated in various forms, to push the idea that the FBI was actually spying on his campaign, rather than contacting Trump officials out of concern that his campaign risked being compromised by a hostile foreign power. Then Trump claimed that “I never fired James Comey because of Russia!”

The second of these, of course, is contradicted by the fact that Trump went on national television and flatly acknowledged that when he fired Comey as FBI director, he was thinking that “this Russia thing” is a “made-up story.” But the first statement deserves more attention, because it’s central to the narrative that Trump and his allies have fixed upon to discredit the original investigation (which has become special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s probe) as an Obama administration spy-ops effort to derail the Trump campaign."

If there is any lasting benefit from the Trump era, it will lie in the Great Unmasking: the revelation of just how much bad faith pervades modern conservatism.

Some of us, of course, knew this all along, and are not surprised. Conversely, many centrists and much of the news media simply refuse to face up to the asymmetry of our politics and will persist with bothsidesism even as one side drives us into the abyss. But one can at least hope that the constant revelations of past hypocrisy will have some impact.

These revelations come on many fronts. Pious invokers of fiscal responsibility and hysterical debt alarmists are perfectly OK with tax cuts that explode the deficit. Professors who denounce campus political correctness as the greatest threat we face to free speech collude with right-wing activists to conduct opposition research on left-wing students.

Rather oddly, some of the few people on the right who really seem to believe what they were saying are foreign-policy neoconservatives. They misled us into a disastrous war; but they appear to have been sincere about their national security concerns, and are among the few Republicans who remain steadfast in their Never Trumpism. (Curse you, Donald Trump, for making me feel some respect for Bill Kristol!)

But almost everyone else on the right is revealing his true face. And now comes energy and environmental policy.

Over the past 40 years or so conservatives have become ever more strident in their attacks on environmental protection. They questioned the science; they insisted that any attempt to limit emissions would greatly damage economic growth; they denounced government intervention and declared the sanctity of free markets (even though Econ 101 calls for intervention in the case of negative “externalities” like pollution.)

But none of it was sincere. GOP climate skeptics have repeatedly given the game away, for example by touting new studies that they insisted would refute global warming, then rejecting those studies when they confirmed it. GOP economists who tout the limitless ability of markets to cope with change suddenly proclaim them utterly incapable of adapting to a carbon tax.

And now all that talk about free markets is revealed as the sham it always was.

City News stationed a reporter at Chicago’s police headquarters 24 hours a day to cover whatever incidents were radioed in. Hersh, then in his early 20s, was responsible for the late shift. One night, he writes, this happened:

Two cops called in to report that a robbery suspect had been shot trying to avoid arrest. The cops who had done the shooting were driving in to make a report. … I raced down to the basement parking lot in the hope of getting some firsthand quotes before calling in the story. The driver obviously did not see me as he parked the car. As he climbed out, a fellow cop, who clearly had heard the same radio report I had, shouted something like, “So the guy tried to run on you?” The driver said, “Naw, I told the nigger to beat it and then I plugged him.”

What happened then? Did Hersh, who would go on to uncover the My Lai massacre in Vietnam and become one of the greatest investigative journalists in U.S. history, sprint to his publication and demand that it run this explosive scoop?

No. Hersh spoke to his editor, who told him to do nothing, since it would be his word against the police. He didn’t try to interview the responsible cop or his partner, or dig much further. Instead, he gave up on it and soon headed off to do his required service in the Army, “full of despair at my weakness and the weakness of a profession that dealt so easily with compromise and self-censorship.”

If Hersh were a superhero, this would be his origin story. Two hundred and seventy-four pages after the Chicago anecdote, he describes his coverage of a massive slaughter of Iraqi troops and civilians by the U.S. in 1991 after the Persian Gulf War ended. America’s indifference to this massacre was, Hersh writes, “a reminder of the Vietnam War’s MGR, for Mere Gook Rule: If it’s a murdered or raped gook, there is no crime.”

Despite Hersh’s reputation as a man devoted to tearing down American institutions, he actually emphasizes how many honest people can be found inside them if you go looking. At least in the past, he writes, Congress was “overflowing with members and staff with integrity and courage.” He has extensive contacts in the military whom he deeply admires. He says of senior intelligence officials that “there are many good ones who deserved my respect.”

The most startling story in “Reporter” may be one that is never explicitly told: that America was once a place where someone like Hersh could come from nowhere to terrify everyone at the pinnacle of national power.

Hersh’s father owned a dry-cleaning store and died when Hersh was 18. Because of his father’s illness, Hersh barely made it out of high school and enrolled in a two-year junior college with no admission requirements. His first choice was to go work for Xerox, but they weren’t interested.
