Are you sure he hasn't said that? I wouldn't be surprised. You still get, or are just too busy defending Trump, that he's a well trained sales person. You not seeing it is indicative of just how good he is. Your persona on this board, like Trump's in RL, is very transparent to most of us though.

How do you know whether they are or they aren't? I have read stories that FBI agents are quietly asking to be subpoenaed because if they come forward as whistleblowers they're hosed, but if they're subpoenaed they're safe. So possibly a true statement, we just don't know.

Nope - another lie by over statement and unverifiable assumption plus throw in a double serving of trying to take back his statements about how bad the FBI was with a hong compliment. A 5 year old can see it - why can't you?

Speaking of what he says:

Merely responding to your post.

Salesmen have YUGE social filters. They don't blurt out whatever pops into their head at the moment ... Hey, you're black! Do you suppose I can sell you a nice Cadillac that you can't afford??? So you either need to credit Trump with more forethought, or give up on the idea of him lying. - SIGNY

Did your brain break? TRUMP might have said that, but a SALESMAN wouldn't because it wouldn't result in a sale. So either you can't figure out what I said or you can't figure out what YOU said.

Quote:

How do you know? If he had said sadly, I had no other choice but to cancel the summit would that have been more acceptable to you? - SIGNY

Nope.- CC

Why not? What WOULD be acceptable to you? An explanation that fits YOUR idea of the situation? And based on what? Your "detailed knowledge" of behind-the-scenes events? HA!

Quote:

Nope - another lie by over statement and unverifiable assumption plus throw in a double serving of trying to take back his statements about how bad the FBI was with a hong compliment. A 5 year old can see it - why can't you?

Because there's some evidence that it's a true statement (from sources other than Trump) and no evidence that it's a "lie". Basically, you decided it was a "lie" because ... well, you hate Trump so ANYthing he says is a "lie", according to you. Based, once again, on your complete lack of knowledge, and your persistent bias against Trump.

Quote:

There was spying ON the Trump campaign. -SIGNY

So every time the FBI questions or investigates someone one it's "spying?" Not surprising you have adopted their slanted language.- CC

No. An "investigation" can include looking at documents, looking at physical evidence, and taking testimony, USUALLY IN THE OPEN, but once it consists primarily of secret surveillance then, yes, that's "spying". Because secret surveillance by another name is "spying". Look up any definition of "spying" that you want.

Mark Halperin? The journalist who (conveniently) has been black balled for sexual misconduct? I haven't been able to find any links for that... do you have any cites?- CC

Sorry, "Halper". Look it up. He was paid a million dollars.

Even the intelligence agencies have concluded that altho the Russians "meddled" in the campaign (and they rest that charge partly on the totally unfounded accusation that Russians gave Assange the Podesta emails) that it didn't affect the outcome of the election. See?

Perfectly spot-on, for me.

Funny you should ask, I even started a thread with that question to get past your ridiculous idee fixe about RUSSIA! and towards what Trump has DONE/as opposed to what he SAYS (TRUMP: Good, bad, ugly) but apparently you weren't too interested in thinking about it, you were waaay too focused on "golden showers"!

He got us out of TPP and TTIP, NAFTA is stalled in the water.

He has instituted tariffs on steel and aluminum.

Despite his belligerent statements about Iran and Syria and missile firings on irrelevant Syria installations he has quietly withdrawn funding (and interdicted funding sources) from various CIA ops in the Mideast including the so-called "white Helmets" and "moderate rebels" and the opium trail thru Pakistan.

He may be about to develop a breakthrough negotiation with DPRK.

He moved the American embassy to Jerusalem ...

And broke the nuclear deal with Iran.

He is SERIOUS about getting illegals out of the USA and keeping them out.

He signed a big tax cut for corporations.

And he's getting the EU so pissed off at us about Russian and Iran sanctions and tariffs on EU steel that he might make THEM quit US, rather than us quitting them, because (according to his statements) NATO is an irrelevant money-suck that only benefits Europe.

Now, you may agree or disagree with what he's "done" but this is just a short list, off the top of my head. Apparently, while you were maintaining your laser-like focus on a made-up issue, you took your eye off the ball.

It's a good thing to try, but it needs to be seen if it pans out.

"missile firings on irrelevant Syria installations" He seems to have handed over the reins and expense to Israel. Yanno, making our allies pay their way.
Due to this change in lineup, Russia seems to have moderated its response, not responding except to direct attacks on Russian positions, and sometimes, not even then. Russia agreed to not deploy its T400 systems. Perhaps that was a mutual decision, to avoid escalation.

That would be nice, though in my opinion, temporary. Kim and Trump seem to have the exact same style: "not agreement capable".

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

I brought this from the other thread, which I posted more than a year ago (Feb 2017). Much of this was drawn from Trump's openly stated positions, so there was no secret what Trump wanted to do, and where I agreed or disagreed with his positions. Overall Trump is doing ... or trying to do ... what he said he would. Except that he got caught up in a war with the deep state, since they've done everything to torpedo his administration. And my opinion of his positions remains pretty much the same, unless he pulls some big ginormous rabbits out of his hat, in which case my opinion of him will change.

Seeing as he is mostly heading in the directions he said he would BEFORE he was elected, I don't think I would characterize him as being a "liar".

Quote:

So, how is Trump doing on the three things that I thought were so important that they outweighed the fact that Trump would be a loose cannon ... something that I mentioned frequently BEFORE the election?

1) FREE TRADE
Two backed out of (TPP, TTIP) two more (NAFTA, CAFTA) to go. The WTO might be too big to tackle. The quality of Trump's "bilateral" deals has yet to be demonstrated.

2) MAKE NICE WITH RUSSIA
Trump is getting a lot of pushback from neocons in both parties. No progress in this area.

3) ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION
So far, I've been very pleased with Trump's temporary pause on visas from seven war-torn, terrorist-burdened nations, plus his "surge" of raids and deportations. People who are in this country illegally shouldn't expect ICE to ignore the law on their behalf, and if they get swept up because they were in the company of drug-runners, gangbangers, and murderers ... oh well, maybe people will start being a little more careful about the company that they keep.

Things I KNEW I was going to be against
1) ENVIRONMENT AND ENERGY
However, by withdrawing from TPP and TTIP, the venue for disagreement is in the US courts and Congress, not secret tribunals in Brussels or Singapore. Different states can adopt different policies, and (strangely) it may be the liberal states arguing about "states' rights", which I find to be a positive development.

Things I suspected I might be against
1) REGULATORY POLICIES
Yes, I know that businesses - especially small businesses - face a welter of regulations. However, businesses have proven to be incapable of regulating themselves. There's a reason why regulatory agencies came into being in the first place. We all know what we want out of businesses: don't sell us contaminated products, don't shit up the environment, don't brutalize your workers. Why can't we simplify?

2) TAX POLICIES
I have no idea what will come out of the Trump administration. Our tax laws desperately need reform, but I doubt that Trump's reforms would match mine.

3) CHINA AND IRAN
Unnecessarily confrontational, militarily. China is an economic adversary, not a military one. Iran isn't our enemy at all, it's Saudi Arabia's - but who the heck cares?

Things I suspected I might be for

1) BORDER TAX
However, there will be a lot of pushback from out "trading partners" involving possibly the WTO
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-02-13/biggest-case-wto-history-euro
pe-prepares-legal-challenge-against-trump-border-tax
so it may have to be framed as a Value Added Tax reform, to make our taxes more like other nations and to level the playing field.

Issues that are complete unknowns:
1) OBAMACARE
Obamacare needs to be replaced, but it depends on with what. If Trump makes the government negotiate for best drug prices, he will do more to save Medicare than all of the liberal hand-wringing. It would also help Obamacare be more cost-effective. But what comes out is unpredictable.

Hey Signy

I voted against Trump for one reason, and that was because Hillary's neo-CON anti-Russia agenda looked like an existentially dangerous path.

Aside from that, I was OK with his immigration stance and more than OK with his plans to drop out of international trade agreements.

I was pretty sure I was going to be against everything else, but compared to nuclear annihilation, it's survivable in the short-term.

So I find Syria, as the bellweather of Russian relations troubling. It looks like one step forward, one step sideways, and one step back. The appointment of Bolton also doesn't bode well.

I'm willing to see how this all goes. But since I'm not an optimist by nature, and since every event is presented with equally plausible, but opposite, spins, I'm going to give the downside more credence until it looks otherwise.

But, speaking of the democrats - when the hell are they going to put on their big boy pants and get to work?

That's a good question. We're coming on two straight years of a temper tantrum and nothing has changed. All the celebrating about the house and senate supposedly going Democrat seems to even have died down. I'm not sure how much anybody even believes that at this point. I'm actually hoping that at least one of them flip, since as I've said many times before I think our two political parties do the most damage to the nation when they control all 3 branches.

The Democrats in 2018 are completely lost. They have no real message, and they're still feeling the backlash of all of their policies and push back against their current way of going about issues.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

If you add the probabilities for each race together, you’ll find that Democrats lose an average of about three Senate seats in 2018 from the 49 now controlled by Democrats.

rated
/

The Democrats can’t win enough control in the Senate to do anything in 2019. The politicians know it. But do the D voters? Not very many do. Too many D voters childishly believe in miracles, rather than numbers, and when the miracle doesn’t happen in November 2018, the miracle that the Democrats take control of the Senate, some of the D voters will swing over to become R voters in 2020. Their logic is laughably stupid: If the D politicians can’t change the system, then maybe the R politicians can.

Republicans need to win only nine senate races to keep a majority, and Democrats need to win 28 to take it away.

Five of Senate seats the Democrats need — the ones in West Virginia, North Dakota, Montana, Missouri and Indiana — are in states that President Trump won by 18 percentage points or more.

Just how bad is this map for Democrats? It’s bad enough that it may be the worst Senate map that any party has faced ever, or at least since direct election of senators began in 1913. It’s bad enough that Democrats could conceivably gain 35 or 40 seats in the House … and not pick up the two seats they need in the Senate.

Check out the race-by-race ratings put forward by independent groups such as the Cook Political Report, Inside Elections and Sabato’s Crystal Ball. They suggest that Democrats are more likely to lose Senate seats next year than to gain them — and that while there’s a plausible path to a Democratic majority, it’s a fairly unlikely one.

Your explanation of it all is bound to draw some ire from the Leftists on the board, but I don't see any real argument to it.

Their entire platform right now is "Russia!" and everybody who doesn't agree with us is a racist, sexist, homophobe, islamophobe.... yanno... Hillary's quote that still loudly reverberates 2 years later in every Leftist echo chamber in June of 2018.

HAHAHAH! That's so "you": Misinformed/ uniformed/ "believing"/ running on emotion/ self righteous. Your posts are so much twaddle. You asked me what Trump has "done", and when I answer (and BTW explicitly stating where I disagree with some of his policies) you spend a lot of words telling me that you don't like his actions. So, I guess in a backwards kind of way you admitted that Trump HAS "done" things, right?

As far as Trump being a liar, your brain must be on a carousel. You said that a salesman would never say anything like Say, you're black, can I sell you a Cadillac that you can't afford?" You said that a salesman would lie, instead. Then you say that TRUMP would say such a thing. Ergo, Trump is NOT a salesman, and [presumably] not a liar. It's simple logic dood. Try to follow the straight line without getting dizzy halfway thru, ok?

Those people were from shitholes. If you don't think so, why don't you move there and help them out instead of virtue signaling from a country that's not a shithole.

The Muslim ban was a good thing. Look at other countries that let them in with open arms. Protecting your country by requiring means for properly vetting immigrants and not just taking in refugees by the hundreds of thousands at a time un-vetted is not racist.

You're going to have to post a citation where he said people who marched in the KKK are good people. I'm calling bullshit on that one.

Keeping illegals out of the country isn't "racism", it's making your borders mean something. I didn't assume that Obama was a "racist" when that picture was taken, I assume he was doing his duty as President... to yanno, keep the interests of the CITIZENS of the USA foremost, over the interests of non-citizens. Screening immigrants from jihadist-ridden failed states with sketchy documentation isn't "racism" either. And do you know what? There are nations that ARE shitholes ... not only are they corrupt, they're poverty-stricken. Has nothing to do with "race". Unless of course YOU believe that they're shitholes BECAUSE of their racial makeup? In which case, that would make YOU the racist.

That photo exists because recently, perhaps during the primaries, children not accompanied by adults came here by the tens of thousands. Mostly from El Salvador I think. Anyone besides me remember that?

Health and Human Services was tasked with finding beds for them. They not only did not have a budget that would cover the cost, they did not have the housing. They had to find or create it as fast and however they could. This was in no way Obama needlessly or maliciously separating children from their parents. It was done as humanly as possible at the time. It did make for a bad photo opt though.

I'm going to get more huffy than usual, but I want you to know what I think, and why.

As I mentioned in another thread, for about the past couple of years we hired a homeless guy to do our gardening. We paid him $20 an hour, coffee or cold Powerade in the AM depending on how hot the morning, lunch with us at the kitchen table, cold Powerade in the afternoon. When his bicycle (his main mode of transportation) was stolen from our driveway we bought him another. We would give him things or extra money from time to time. It wasn't much; it was really a kind of pitiful lifeline, but I got to know him rather well chatting at lunch. I can't imagine living under the circumstances that he was living under.

And then, listening to NPR, there are the complaints of the illegal immigrants ... people taken into custody who didn't get good food. Or didn't get good prenatal care. Or didn't get to see a dentist, or their family, or a lawyer and I though Yeah, I know it's terrible but ... What the FUCK!?!!? We treat illegal immigrants BETTER than our own citizens, who we allow to live under the worst circumstances, without medical or vision or dental care (you should see this guy's teeth) ... why in hell are we so anxious to cater to people who have crossed our border, who we didn't invite, when we allow our own citizens to fester and die under underpasses and in riverbeds?

So you'll excuse me if I don't cry ... oh boo hoo ... for illegal immigrants. Let's take care of our own first. And BTW, do you know what this homeless guy (who is, BTW, of Hispanic origin and who speaks fluent Spanish) said? He said: I've heard them talk, how you come over the border and have a couple of kids and get on welfare. So yeah, no more "anchor babies" either.

Opinions
Trump’s not a liar. He’s a madman.

"Even by President Trump’s standards, this Memorial Day weekend was memorable for the sheer volume of balderdash, bunk, poppycock and patent nonsense flowing from the White House.

Balderdash: Trump went after the “failing and corrupt” New York Times for citing a senior White House official “who doesn’t exist” and admonished the newspaper to “use real people, not phony sources.” It turned out the senior official in question had spoken at a White House briefing arranged by Trump’s aides and attended by dozens of reporters.

Bunk: Trump attacked “the 13 Angry Democrats” working for Robert S. Mueller III, apparently referring to prior party registration. But Mueller himself is a Republican, appointed by a Republican who was himself appointed by Trump.

Poppycock: He called for “pressure on the Democrats to end the horrible law that separates children from there [sic] parents once they cross the Border into the U.S.” There is no such law, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions has acknowledged that family separation “inevitably” results from Trump’s “zero-tolerance” enforcement policy.

Patent nonsense: “Who’s going to give back the young and beautiful lives (and others) that have been devastated and destroyed by the phony Russia Collusion Witch Hunt?” Trump asked. I can picture the GoFundMe campaign: “Paul Manafort, a young and beautiful 69-year-old, had a promising career ahead of him selling access to the White House before he was cruelly indicted .?.?. ”

Early in this weekend’s monsoon of malarkey, New York Times White House reporter Maggie Haberman tweeted that Trump told “demonstrable falsehoods” — and she was roundly ridiculed on Twitter for failing to say Trump was lying. She defended herself by saying Trump’s pronouncements “can be hard to label” because “he often thinks whatever he says is what’s real.”

Haberman is right, but there’s another reason not to label Trump’s untruths “lies”: Calling him a liar lets him off easy. A liar, by definition, knows he’s not telling the truth. Trump’s behavior is worse: With each day it becomes more obvious he can’t distinguish between fact and fantasy. It’s an illness, and it’s spreading.

I’ve been writing for two years about his seeming inability to separate truth from falsehood: from his claim that he opposed the Iraq War to his belief that his rainy inauguration was “really sunny.” The man who ghostwrote Trump’s “Art of the Deal” marveled at Trump’s “ability to convince himself that whatever he is saying at any given moment is true.”

Trump has acknowledged as much himself. In a 2007 deposition — he was suing author Timothy O’Brien for asserting that Trump’s net worth wasn’t in the billions but in the range of $150 million to $250 million — Trump was asked how he calculates his net worth.

“My net worth fluctuates,” Trump said, “and it goes up and down with the markets and with attitudes and with feelings, even my own feelings. .?.?. I would say it’s my general attitude at the time that the question may be asked.”

Of course, Trump’s “feelings” don’t change his net worth any more than they change the weather. That he thinks they do is his problem — and ours.

Writing last week for NBCNews.com, a professor of cognitive neuroscience at University College London, along with a researcher, offered an explanation for Trump’s mendacity.

Noting that the daily average number of Trump falsehoods has been rising since he took office (as measured by The Post’s Fact Checker), the professor, Tali Sharot, pointed to the biological process of “emotional adaptation.” People tend to feel uncomfortable when they tell lies, but research has found that the discomfort is reduced each time a person lies — thereby increasing the frequency of lies.

Trump’s fictions are so pain-free that they may not feel like lies to him — honestly. And, ominously, they may seem less glaring to others over time. Sharot noted that people “may desensitize to the president’s falsehoods in the same way that they do to overused perfume, making them less likely to act to correct this pattern of behavior.”

You can see this in the repeated failure of congressional Republicans to call out Trump’s untruths, when they obviously know better. And you can see it in administration officials’ determination to support whatever Trump says, no matter how ludicrous. (The White House held a briefing Tuesday to support Trump’s attempt to blame Democrats for immigrant family separation.) Trump may not be able to separate fact from fiction, but those who knowingly back up his falsehoods are liars.

So what should we call the twaddle and claptrap Trump spouts? I propose “Trumpery.” Defined as “worthless nonsense,” it also has a felicitous echo of “Trumped up.”

Go ahead and say he’s lying, if you think so. To me, his facility with fallacy and his pain-free fibbery aren’t symptomatic of a liar but of a madman."

Well there's your problem right there. You assume Trump is a racist. - GSTRING

I assume he's a racist based on his racist behavior.

Such as ??? Oh yeah, that's right:
Quote:

+ John Kelley's "we'll house them... somewhere"
Not racist, nationalist. Dealing with a flood of ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. And last I checked, citizenship status was not a "race".
Quote:

and Trump's comments on people from "shit holes"
Not racist, unless he tied the "shithole" status to the "race" of its population, and I don't think he did. You might have, tho!

Quote:

And commenting that some of the people who marched for KKK were "good people"
Links please?
Quote:

and the Muslim ban - yanno the acts of a racist
Not a ban on "Muslims". If it were, then Xtians from Syria would get a free pass and yanno what? THEY DON'T. Also, last time I checked ... RELIGION IS NOT A "RACE".

Quote:

You assume that Trump is a "liar" (and then break logic in order to demonstrate it).- SIGNY

He's a liar based on his constant, demonstrable lying- GSTRING

Which you have not be able to actually ... what's that word? ... demonstrate.

Quote:

You assume that Trump is in the hands of RUSSIA!!! - SIGNY

He definitely has a quid pro quo relationship with Russia. First he lied about having any dealings in Russia. Then - amongst many other connections - he held off applying sanctions on Russia against the will of the Republican majority congress. He definitely is beholding to them in some way.- GSTRING

It was HIS POLICY DECISION. It was part of many of his stump speeches. It was NOT some secret hidden agenda. People voted for him anyway But I see that you assume that half of the voting population was "wrong", because you just can't believe that they would know that about Trump's POV and vote for him anyway (or maybe even because of).

Quote:

You assume that Trump didn't "do" anything. - SIGNY

He's done things, and many of them are anti-American in spirit imho.- GSTRING

Anti-American? By defending our borders? By placing our economic interests above China's? Well, in any case, you backwardly admit that your insinuation was wrong.

Quote:

You assume that I'm a Trump supporter and/or a Russian supporter. - SIGNY

Yes! Ding! You got one right!- GSTRING

Well, you're wrong. I agree with about half of the things Trump has done. I disagree with about half of the things Trump has done. I happen to think that the positive half is more important than the negative half, and am willing to fight policy disagreements at the state and local level if they can't be addressed at the national level.

Quote:

Screening immigrants from jihadist-ridden failed states with sketchy documentation isn't "racism" either. - SIGNY

Who said it was? - GSTRING

HAHAHA! YOU did! And I quote ...
Quote:

It fits with so much of Trump's behavior ... and the Muslim ban - yanno the acts of a racist
Apparently, you don't even know what you yourself posted.

Quote:

And do you know what? There are nations that ARE shitholes ... not only are they corrupt, they're poverty-stricken.- SIGNY

No - they are most definitely not shit holes.- GSTRING

Even the people who live there think that they're shit holes. They know that their nations need a LOT of improvement... more decent jobs, better educational opportunities, better security, infrastructure. They rightly tie their lack of progress to the corruption of their politicians, who help the EU, the USA, and the banks bleed them dry. They don't tie it to their race, tho.

Yanno, GSTRING, if we can recognize that there are nations where we might like to live ... Denmark, Switzerland, Norway .... then we SHOULD (if we are being at all realistic) recognize that there are nations on the other end of the spectrum ... poor, corrupt, wartorn, failed ... yanno, SHITHOLES. But if you think they don't exist ... well then, why don't YOU go live there? I'm sure you'll enjoy it a lot! (BTW, you should read Confessions of an Economic Hit Man who explains how "we" foster a comprador class in other nations.)

You're conscience is clean! - GSTRING

More ASSumptions on your part
(a) We don't live in a "mansion"
(b) We don't have "so much" and what we DO have, we're trying to save for our daughter
(c) That is why we can't really afford to be more generous. If our dear daughter was competent enough to stand on her own two feet, we wouldn't worry that much about money.
(d) Have YOU shared meals with a homeless person lately? Or do you just "virtue signal" on the internet? Personally, I think you're a "virtue signalling" kinda guy.

Donald Trump Loves Conspiracy Theories

Donald Trump built his political career on a conspiracy theory: The false claim that Barack Obama wasn’t born in the United States.
But it’s not the only conspiracy theory he’s indulged.

Over the years, Trump has called everything from climate change to Russian meddling in the 2016 election a hoax. According to a recent report in the New York Times, he’s told associates that the Access Hollywood video of him bragging about touching women without their consent is also a hoax — even though he admitted making the remarks when it came out.

Or just yanno, read and use your brain:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2018/05/31/trumps-li
es-about-the-russia-probe-devolve-into-absurdity
/

THE MORNING PLUM:

This morning, President Trump floated a series of big lies about the Russia investigation. They aren’t normal or conventional lies. They are profoundly absurd exercises in up-is-downism — that is, enormous, preposterously audacious falsehoods that run directly contrary to facts that are widely known and ascertainable with great ease.

Which is the whole point.

First, Trump quoted Rush Limbaugh saying that the FBI never told Trump that the Russians tried to infiltrate his campaign, which Trump called a “hoax.” This is something that Trump has repeatedly floated in various forms, to push the idea that the FBI was actually spying on his campaign, rather than contacting Trump officials out of concern that his campaign risked being compromised by a hostile foreign power. Then Trump claimed that “I never fired James Comey because of Russia!”

The second of these, of course, is contradicted by the fact that Trump went on national television and flatly acknowledged that when he fired Comey as FBI director, he was thinking that “this Russia thing” is a “made-up story.” But the first statement deserves more attention, because it’s central to the narrative that Trump and his allies have fixed upon to discredit the original investigation (which has become special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s probe) as an Obama administration spy-ops effort to derail the Trump campaign."

Hey - you don't even have to read! A funny video just for you:

The Joss Whedon script for Serenity, where Wash lives, is Serenity-190pages.pdf at https://www.mediafire.com/two

If there is any lasting benefit from the Trump era, it will lie in the Great Unmasking: the revelation of just how much bad faith pervades modern conservatism.

Some of us, of course, knew this all along, and are not surprised. Conversely, many centrists and much of the news media simply refuse to face up to the asymmetry of our politics and will persist with bothsidesism even as one side drives us into the abyss. But one can at least hope that the constant revelations of past hypocrisy will have some impact.

These revelations come on many fronts. Pious invokers of fiscal responsibility and hysterical debt alarmists are perfectly OK with tax cuts that explode the deficit. Professors who denounce campus political correctness as the greatest threat we face to free speech collude with right-wing activists to conduct opposition research on left-wing students.

Rather oddly, some of the few people on the right who really seem to believe what they were saying are foreign-policy neoconservatives. They misled us into a disastrous war; but they appear to have been sincere about their national security concerns, and are among the few Republicans who remain steadfast in their Never Trumpism. (Curse you, Donald Trump, for making me feel some respect for Bill Kristol!)

But almost everyone else on the right is revealing his true face. And now comes energy and environmental policy.

Over the past 40 years or so conservatives have become ever more strident in their attacks on environmental protection. They questioned the science; they insisted that any attempt to limit emissions would greatly damage economic growth; they denounced government intervention and declared the sanctity of free markets (even though Econ 101 calls for intervention in the case of negative “externalities” like pollution.)

But none of it was sincere. GOP climate skeptics have repeatedly given the game away, for example by touting new studies that they insisted would refute global warming, then rejecting those studies when they confirmed it. GOP economists who tout the limitless ability of markets to cope with change suddenly proclaim them utterly incapable of adapting to a carbon tax.

And now all that talk about free markets is revealed as the sham it always was.

I guess there is nothing left to do but write poor sportsmanship articles like this when the Democrats have no power, look to gain no power in the 2018 elections, and seemingly have no game plan for winning the presidential elections in 2020 either.

There are no "revelations" here. This is all stuff that Democrats have said about Republicans since forever.

The author even smugly admits that in the second sentence.

And that is why you lean Republican, 6ixStringJack. You don't care. It's the defining characteristic of a certain kind, no, make that a majority of Americans. I'll give you two more things not to care about. The first thing happens with American police (a thing that those who lean Republican will deny happens) and the second happens with American military. Again, Americans deny the military did what they did and other Americans who weren't there deny it could ever happen, even:

At the beginning of Seymour Hersh’s new memoir, “Reporter,” he tells a story from his first job in journalism, at the City News Bureau of Chicago.

City News stationed a reporter at Chicago’s police headquarters 24 hours a day to cover whatever incidents were radioed in. Hersh, then in his early 20s, was responsible for the late shift. One night, he writes, this happened:

Two cops called in to report that a robbery suspect had been shot trying to avoid arrest. The cops who had done the shooting were driving in to make a report. … I raced down to the basement parking lot in the hope of getting some firsthand quotes before calling in the story. The driver obviously did not see me as he parked the car. As he climbed out, a fellow cop, who clearly had heard the same radio report I had, shouted something like, “So the guy tried to run on you?” The driver said, “Naw, I told the nigger to beat it and then I plugged him.”

What happened then? Did Hersh, who would go on to uncover the My Lai massacre in Vietnam and become one of the greatest investigative journalists in U.S. history, sprint to his publication and demand that it run this explosive scoop?

No. Hersh spoke to his editor, who told him to do nothing, since it would be his word against the police. He didn’t try to interview the responsible cop or his partner, or dig much further. Instead, he gave up on it and soon headed off to do his required service in the Army, “full of despair at my weakness and the weakness of a profession that dealt so easily with compromise and self-censorship.”

If Hersh were a superhero, this would be his origin story. Two hundred and seventy-four pages after the Chicago anecdote, he describes his coverage of a massive slaughter of Iraqi troops and civilians by the U.S. in 1991 after the Persian Gulf War ended. America’s indifference to this massacre was, Hersh writes, “a reminder of the Vietnam War’s MGR, for Mere Gook Rule: If it’s a murdered or raped gook, there is no crime.”

Despite Hersh’s reputation as a man devoted to tearing down American institutions, he actually emphasizes how many honest people can be found inside them if you go looking. At least in the past, he writes, Congress was “overflowing with members and staff with integrity and courage.” He has extensive contacts in the military whom he deeply admires. He says of senior intelligence officials that “there are many good ones who deserved my respect.”

The most startling story in “Reporter” may be one that is never explicitly told: that America was once a place where someone like Hersh could come from nowhere to terrify everyone at the pinnacle of national power.

Hersh’s father owned a dry-cleaning store and died when Hersh was 18. Because of his father’s illness, Hersh barely made it out of high school and enrolled in a two-year junior college with no admission requirements. His first choice was to go work for Xerox, but they weren’t interested. He got his start in journalism largely by accident, in a series of events involving a late-night poker game and a gigantic helping of happenstance. Yet his name has been discussed with fear in corporate CEO suites, at CIA headquarters, and in the Oval Office.

“I’ve spent most of my career writing stories that challenge the official narrative,” he writes in the last paragraph, “and have been rewarded mightily and suffered only slightly for it.”
