The top two officials at the Department of Homeland Security are serving unlawfully in their roles, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) said Friday, dealing a rebuke to President Trump’s affinity for filling senior executive roles in his administration with “acting” leaders who lack Senate confirmation.

Good for the GAO, but how many Army divisions do they have to make Trump obey the law? This is a president who’s deliberately wrecking the post office to gain a partisan advantage over Democrats. He sent troops to Portland to create chaos that would help sell his law-and-order campaign theme. He’s pulled the birther card, that they are foreigners who can’t legally be President, against Senator Barack Obama, then Senator Ted Cruz, and now Senator Kamala Harris. He had protesters near the White House gassed so he could do a photo op. He pardons his pals even if they’ve committed crimes so obvious that even Attorney General Bill Barr calls their prosecution righteous. He retweets lunatic QAnon conspiracies. He tried to get a foreign leader to open a criminal investigation of a political opponent. He has relentlessly tried to undermine the U.S. Census. And he’s done all this stuff without protest from the Republican Party.

So what are the odds that Republican Senators will try to make him obey the law now? About zero, I think.

No.

They're trying to put spin on it like they always do and pretend that this is the case.

People haven't been allowed to do anything they used to do for going on half a year now, and that includes watching sports. They should be starved for even the shittiest basketball games out there.

The MLB quickly did a course correction and stopped the BLM shit. They're not hurting nearly as badly as the NBA is now because of it.

6ix, you know as little about basketball as you do about success, but in this you are no different than every Texan/Trump voter I know, except for the rich ones, who didn't get rich by letting illformed political opinions overrule facts.

From 3 years back: NBA Viewership Hits Five Year Low; How Does League Fix Problem?

www.outkick.com/nba-viewership-hits-five-year-low-league-fix-problem/

Superteams can be both good for the NBA Finals, when the largest possible audience arrives to watch the NBA product, but simultaneously bad for the rest of the season, when fans tune out because they already know who the two best teams are. In fact, in a modern communications era when we all have so many different entertainment options to consider, doesn’t it make perfect sense that most people would ignore the NBA until the NBA Finals arrive? After all, if you already know it’s going to be Warriors-Cavs in the NBA Finals, why do you care about the journey to the final?

As is, unlike every other major sport in America, we already know exactly what will happen in the NBA, so why watch until the very end? After all, how many people would watch “Game of Thrones” from start to finish if they knew exactly how the series ended?

The NBA is broken and fans are abandoning its product save for the NBA Finals themselves. So how do you fix things? I’ve got three suggestions: . . .

I think if all three of these rules were implemented we could make the NBA great again.

As is, the NBA set a five year viewership low this year and is likely to continue to decline again next season. Without talent distributed somewhat evenly across the league, fans tune out until the NBA Finals. Given how many entertainment options fans have today, the NBA is at real risk of becoming a one month season, just like college basketball already has.

Blah, blah, blah...

Keep posting bullshit. I don't have any stake in the NBA.

I used to be a superfan back in the 90's and early 2000's but couldn't give a shit less about it anymore. If they want to kill their viewership by hyper-politicizing the sport, go right ahead.

Baseball has managed just fine with 162 meaningless games per year. The NBA only has 82 meaningless games per year, and it's arguably a more popular sport than Football, which doesn't have any meaningless games.

That's a lot of lost ad revenue if they cut the NBA down to only 1 month seasons. Would be a shame for them to have to do that because they can't keep their mouths shut and just play ball.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

It feels like the 1944 United States presidential election. FDR looked like he was dying and would definitively be dead shortly after. Robert Trump dropped dead this week while Donald, his older and fatter brother who won't release his medical records, could die sooner than Biden. Trump had two brothers; both died younger than Trump is now. It can't be long for Trump.

In Texas, we've got lots of men exactly like Trump: fat dumb motherfuckers. You know what stops them? Their eating habits kill them. If I put these guys under significant legal or financial pressure and they just have strokes or heart attacks and die. It is a very satisfying way to suddenly win in a business struggle. Makes winning look easy. Same could happen to Trump. He is one fat dumb bastard of a businessman who breaks his contracts. He is going to blow himself up one day and die from a cerebral hemorrhage. Just How Far Will Trump Go?

The president has dramatically accelerated the pace of his efforts to weaponize the federal government to his advantage.

https://web.archive.org/web/20200814223426/https://www.theatlantic.com
/politics/archive/2020/08/trumps-weaponization-usps-and-census/615235
/

Trump is systematically enlisting agencies, including the Postal Service, Census Bureau, Department of Justice, and Department of Homeland Security, that traditionally have been considered at least somewhat insulated from political machinations to reward his allies and punish those he considers his enemies. He is razing barriers between his personal and political interests and the core operations of the federal government to an extent that no president has previously attempted, a wide range of public-administration experts have told me.

“There’s always been temptation … but no president in modern times has taken action so explicitly and obviously—or transparently—to influence and actually direct these agencies to favor the party in power,” Paul Light, a public-service professor at New York University, told me. “None. None.”

The result of Trump’s moves: an executive branch whose full reach and power is being conscripted to serve the president’s immediate interests. “All of it comes from a place that whatever is in his personal interest—whether it’s financial, reputational, or political—if it benefits him, the government is merely a tool for serving himself,” Walter Shaub, the director of the Office of Government Ethics under former President Barack Obama, told me. “He has simply crossed lines that no one would even conceive of crossing in the past.”

Experts I spoke with said that Trump has dramatically accelerated the pace of his efforts to weaponize federal actions since his Senate acquittal, when every Republican, except Utah’s Mitt Romney, voted to dismiss the charges against him with no sanction and not even a full-scale trial to explore the evidence.

In the past, the census has occasionally faced questions about its accuracy. But never before Trump has there been evidence of a president deliberately trying to skew the results in a manner that helps one party. “I don’t think there’s ever been a charge that the census was systematically unfair,” says Donald Kettl, a longtime scholar of federal administration, now at the University of Texas at Austin.

Until now, the reason for avoiding census tampering has seemed obvious: It was thought that everyone benefits from an accurate count (just as everyone was thought to benefit from an apolitical military, among other institutions Trump has tried to manipulate). Billions of dollars in federal aid are tied to population, so presumably every state would want as many of its people counted as possible. “A complete count is important no matter what state you are in, because so many federal and state programs are tied to the numbers of people,” Steve Murdock, who served as the Census Bureau’s director under President George W. Bush, told me. “You don’t gain much by not counting the people you have to provide services for.”

But in a political environment defined by widening polarization along racial and geographic lines, that traditional restraint has apparently broken down. Hardly any congressional Republicans have raised concerns about Trump’s determination to curtail the census count. That includes Republicans from highly diverse states across the Sun Belt, which are likely to be among the biggest losers if minority populations are systematically undercounted, both in terms of federal aid and the apportionment of congressional seats and Electoral College votes. This week, I asked the offices of GOP senators from Florida, Texas, Arizona, and Georgia if they had any objection to Trump short-circuiting the census count. All refused to respond, except Florida’s Marco Rubio, whose staff referred me only to a comment he’d made on a related issue, Trump’s effort to exclude the undocumented from apportionment. (And even on that question, Rubio avoided taking a definitive position.) Republican governors in those states have not raised concerns publicly either.

“I am just dumbfounded,” said Murdock, who also served for many years as Texas’s state demographer. “I don’t know why Texas would let this happen. The elected officials should be screaming: ‘Count those people; we are providing services for them.’”

Although the House has approved legislation extending the deadline for reporting census results until next April, giving the bureau more time to reach unresponsive Americans, the Senate has refused to consider the measure. Instead, just as with Postal Service slowdowns that may disproportionately hurt rural communities, many Republicans appear to have concluded that they are willing to accept collateral damage to their own constituencies for the partisan gain Trump’s actions could provide. Counting fewer people of color in Texas or Florida might mean fewer federal dollars, and even less representation in Congress. But it also could benefit Republicans in next year’s redistricting, making it tougher for civil-rights groups to legally challenge gerrymandered lines for providing insufficient representation to minorities.

“Republicans are in on the deal,” says Simon Rosenberg, the founder of the Democratic research-and-advocacy group NDN, referring to the GOP’s effective approval of Trump’s actions concerning both the census and the Postal Service. “They want Trump to blunt the size of the Democratic victory this year at all costs … They want Trump to stick his finger in the demographic dam that could make them the minority party for a generation.”

Donald Trump didn't invent vote suppression — he's just taking it to the next level
Undermining voting rights and squelching democracy isn't just a Trump thing. It's been a GOP thing for decades

Trump is taking it to a new level, however, by attempting to suppress Republican votes right along with Democrats. For years the GOP has been pushing voting by mail to help their senior and rural constituencies who have tended to prefer it. R Roughly one-fourth of Trump's votes in 2016 were delivered by mail.

Trump winning won't make the GOP competent to govern. After 4 years of him, voters should ask themselves "Why Are Republicans Failing to Govern?"

Managing a pandemic is difficult in the best of circumstances, but it’s almost impossible for the party built around mistrust of the government and opposition to social services.

The coronavirus death toll shows that what America is doing now is not working. The experiences of Europe and Asia show that the virus can be controlled. So what do congressional Republicans think should happen next?

On this question, every answer was a verbal shrug. Collectively, congressional Republicans have no theory for containing the virus. And they don’t really see it as their job to come up with one. It may have been the Trump administration’s job, but the White House decided to leave it to state and local governments.

That’s left congressional Republicans in a bind. To admit a new strategy is needed is to say that Trump is failing, and few are willing to risk the predictable reprisals. Moreover, congressional Republicans are uncomfortable proposing the kinds of strategies that have worked elsewhere. For instance: Pushing America back into lockdown while spending tens of billions to set up a true test-trace-isolate strategy would also require a multitrillion-dollar support package so families and businesses could survive the return to economic deep-freeze. Few Republicans want to do that.

“There’s a certain amount of motivated reasoning here,” says the top GOP staffer. “If you’re not going to have government intervention, you can’t have the lockdowns.”

That brings me to the explanation for GOP behavior that is almost unanimous among Senate Democrats I’ve spoken to. They believe Republicans are readying themselves to run the strategy against former Vice President Joe Biden they ran against President Obama: Weaponize the debt — which Republicans ran up by trillions during the Trump administration — as a cudgel against anything and everything the Democrats want to do. Force Democrats to take sole ownership of an economic response that’s too small to truly counteract the pain.

If Republicans are behaving like an opposition party that primarily wants to stop Democrats from doing anything, that’s because it’s the role they’re most comfortable playing.

1kiki, your problem is you don't like a two-party system. Neither do I, but so long as it is winner-takes-all at election times, your choice is Democrat, Republican, or Nothing. Nothing means don't vote or vote for a third party that will seldom to never elect anybody to a legislature. Then the next problem is the quality and performance of the elected legislature or officials. Like winner-takes-all, a bad system if there ever was one, there is no fast way to remove incompetent/lazy/dishonest/criminal/mentally-ill politicians before the next election. That, too, needs fixing, but would require rewriting the Constitutions of every state and the nation. I assume the writers of the Constitutions in the various states did not like the idea of politicians being fired from the job on very short notice. Instead, America went to a system of assassinating Presidents. Four have been murdered. Others have been shot but survived. Still others were lucky enough to have the bullets miss them.

Three times Presidents have been impeached. Three times those Presidents should have been removed from office, but the Senate failed. The Constitutional system for handling criminal/mentally-ill/incompetent Presidents was badly designed. The system can't even solve a simple arithmetic problem where a President underpays on his tax returns. See Richard Nixon or Donald Trump tax returns.

Trump's tax schemes are eerily similar to Nixon's, except for a few key differences

"Whatever" is correct. Trump has avoided paying $billions in back taxes for years by going to court. The tax courts in America are completely broken in favor of the wealthy, but maybe not the civil courts:

Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Verna Saunders reasoned that the high court's 7-2 decision in July rejecting broad claims of presidential immunity—in a case over a Manhattan grand jury subpoena seeking financial records—applied not only to criminal proceedings but also to author E. Jean Carroll's civil complaint against President Donald Trump.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

In 1985, the C(ost of Thriving Index) stood at 30 — the median male worker needed thirty weeks of income to afford a house, a car, health care, and education. By 2018, the COTI had increased to 53—a full-time job was insufficient to afford these items, let alone the others that a family needs. A generation ago, the worker could be confident in his ability to provide his family not only with the basics of food, clothing, and shelter, but also with the middle-class essentials of a house, a car, health care, and education. Now he cannot.

Your answer is in the Democratic Party platform:
https://democrats.org/where-we-stand/party-platform/raise-incomes-and-
restore-economic-security-for-the-middle-class
/

No item in the platform will become law because the Republicans oppose all of it, every single line, while the Democrats won't have 67 Senators to override the Republican objections. Because of the rules, 51 or 52 or 53 or 54 or 55 or 56 or 57 or 58 or 59 or more like-minded Democratic Senators are insufficient to get laws passed. We can't change this system inherited from the Founding Fathers. We can't avoid gridlock in the Senate unless one side or the other has 67 Senators to get large projects passed into laws.

Should a Biden DOJ Investigate and Prosecute Trump?

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2020/08/should-biden-prosecute-tru
mp-michelle-goldberg-mike-pesca-debate.html

We just learned that the Senate, that this Republican-led Senate committee, made criminal referrals for many people close to Donald Trump, and the Justice Department never, apparently, took them up. I think there should be an expectation that the next Justice Department, not that it’s going to prosecute, but that it’s going to investigate.

There were arguments not to do this with George W. Bush, when Barack Obama came into office. And those arguments made sense at the time. Obama was facing an economic crisis; this is all hands on deck. The bandwidth of the administration is limited. He wants to move the country forward. He sort of ran on this kind of post-partisan, bringing the country together message.

It’s easy for me to see why they felt like those arguments were persuasive at the time. But you look at the result: It created even more of a culture of impunity in the Republican Party where the people who are now enacting illegal schemes on Trump’s behalf probably feel very little compunction about what this might mean to their future careers.

Trump has NOT been investigated. Where are Trump's income tax returns? He is still fighting to keep those a secret, which is completely senseless if he was ever sincere about releasing those tax returns to the public after the IRS audit was over. Trump, with tax returns and all his accountants, needs to sit down with auditors who can force answers from him.

Trump tax cheating has not been investigated by anybody who can make him pay.

Then there is Trump and the Russian "hoax". Trump has NOT been investigated on why he keeps insisting it was a hoax when it has been proven to NOT be a hoax.

Senate Republicans provide hard evidence that shreds Trump’s persistent lies about a Russia ‘hoax’

A Republican-led Senate committee chronicles the “grave counterintelligence threat” posed by the extensive contacts between Trump’s former campaign chairman and a Russian intelligence operative.

The final volume of the report by the Senate Intelligence Committee’s Russia investigation arrives late in the game. Still, it offers the detailed accounting of how Russian spies worked with the Trump team that former special counsel Robert S. Mueller III should have given the country last year. It offers raw material for the wide-ranging impeachment inquiry that the House of Representatives should have conducted.

Here at last is hard evidence — certified by GOP committee leaders and published this week — that shreds Trump’s false claims of a Russia “hoax” or “witch hunt.” Let us never hear that glib dismissal of fact again. From now on, the simple answer to Trump is: “That’s not what Senate Republicans found.”

Read this passage from the report and consider what it tells us about Trump and his apologists: “The Committee observed numerous Russian-government actors from late 2016 until at least January 2020 consistently spreading overlapping false narratives which sought to discredit investigations into Russian interference.”

One goal of this coverup was to “promote the narrative that Ukraine, not Russia, had interfered in the 2016 U.S. election,” the Senate report says. Sound familiar? It should. This lie has been voiced repeatedly by Trump and his defenders.

Funny how the IRS has NOT collected about $1 trillion per year in taxes owed. Why not collect the money? IRS is not capable of auditing rich people.

On the other hand, the New York Times is very capable of finding tax cheating by the wealthy. NYT used Donald Trump's tax returns given them by Mary Trump, the niece who was cheated out of her inheritance until she sued the pants off of Trump, and the NYTs found plenty of Donald's cheating that was older than the statute of limitations. Trump didn't stop cheating just because he lost one case with his niece.

Until this year, Trump was running a $1 trillion budget deficit per year, which just so happens to be about how much the wealthy don't pay because they cheat on their taxes and the IRS does not know it because Congress is under-funding auditing by the IRS.

Evil Geniuses The Unmaking of America: A Recent History
By Kurt Andersen

Andersen sets out to narrate a complex, many-layered history of how a band of rich people, corporate executives and political right-wingers, aided and abetted by gullible “useful idiots” in the media and the political left, transformed the nation into a casino where only they ever win.

Book review at
www.nytimes.com/2020/08/11/books/review/kurt-andersen-evil-geniuses.ht

Quote:

With his own complicity in mind, one place Andersen does break some new ground is in the portrayal of the shameful liberal complicity that was essential to the long plutocratic hijacking. It is head-spinning to be reminded how much of the nation’s turn to the right and to the rich the Democrats enabled. The Democrat-controlled House voted to cut taxes on the richest Americans, to a rate lower than at any time in the previous half century. Ronald Reagan couldn’t do it without them and, in the Senate, one Joe Biden voted for the cuts, too. As the tide turned against antitrust regulation, writers in The New York Times (oh yeah, this newspaper) and Newsweek cheered.

Voting for cable deregulation? Hiring Goldman Sachs bankers as advisers? Praising Charles Murray’s advocacy of punishing mothers on welfare? Each time, Democrats were #OnIt. With Democrats like these, do we even need a second party representing the plutes?

Republicans Declare Their 2020 Platform Is Supporting Whatever Trump Wants.

Less than 24 hours before their national convention begins, the Republican National Committee has released a “Resolution Regarding the Republican Party Platform” explaining their decision not to draft a party platform this year. It’s a remarkable document and well worth reading because it is a blank check for Trump to fill in with whatever he wants:

What do Republicans believe? What does it mean to be a Republican?

“Owning the libs and pissing off the media,” shrugs Brendan Buck, a longtime senior congressional aide and imperturbable party veteran if ever there was one. “That’s what we believe in now. There’s really not much more to it.”

With Election Day just a few months away, I was genuinely surprised, in the course of recent conversations with a great many Republicans, at their inability to articulate a purpose, a designation, a raison d'être for their party. Everyone understands that Trump is a big-picture sloganeer—“Build the wall!” “Make America Great Again!”— rather than a policy aficionado. Even so, it’s astonishing how conceptually lifeless the party has become on his watch. There is no blueprint to fix what is understood to be a broken immigration system. There is no grand design to modernize the nation’s infrastructure. There is no creative thinking about a conservative, market-based solution to climate change. There is no meaningful effort to address the cost of housing or childcare or college tuition. None of the erstwhile bold ideas proposed by the likes of Newt Gingrich and Paul Ryan—term limits, a balanced budget amendment, reforms to Social Security and Medicare, anti-poverty programs—have survived as serious proposals. Heck, even after a decade spent trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act, Republicans still have no plan to replace it. (Trust me: If they did, you’d hear about it.)

When I called one party elder, he joked that it’s a good thing Republicans decided not to write a new platform for the 2020 convention—because they have produced nothing novel since the last one was written. Trump and his party have relied more on squabbles than solutions in delivering for their base. Even some of the president’s staunchest supporters concede Buck’s point in this regard: The party is now defined primarily by its appetite for conflict, even when that conflict serves no obvious policy goal.

The result is political anarchy. Traditionally, the run-up to a convention sees a party attempting to tame rival factions and unite around a dynamic vision for the future. Instead, Republicans have spent the summer in a self-immolating downward spiral.

On Capitol Hill, several House Republicans berated a member of their leadership for defending the integrity of the nation’s top infectious disease expert amid a raging pandemic; one of them, days later, accosted a young Democratic congresswoman on the steps of the House, allegedly calling her a “fucking bitch,” while another one, who had proudly refused to wear a face covering around the Capitol, contracted Covid-19. Things weren’t much sunnier on the Senate side, where one Republican touted a new investigation that would “certainly help Donald Trump win reelection” while his GOP colleague concluded that a separate probe exonerated Trump’s campaign of wrongdoing in 2016 when it did precisely the opposite. Meanwhile, as party operatives worked feverishly to win ballot access for Kanye West, a bipolar Black celebrity who could ostensibly draw votes from Joe Biden, emerging victorious from at least three GOP primaries were congressional candidates who have expressed support for QAnon, the psychotic conspiracy theory that accuses Democrats and Hollywood elites of trafficking and cannibalizing young children. Given a chance to disavow this nascent movement, the president pleaded ignorance and, along with other party officials, embraced these candidates, even the self-described “proud Islamophobe” who has fantasized about immigrants dying en masse.
