6ix, you are out of mind to say Trump is merely trolling when he says he won't leave the White House, except with a bullet in his brain (just kidding).

No. You're not kidding.

That's that tactic of "accuse them of what you are going to do." and 3) he has enough support (sick stupid fwads) to make it stick.

I think Trump can be made to behave, but you have to be brutal with him, not polite. There was the example of Trump University, where he said he'd never pay. Then he paid because his opponents were willing to make his life hell in the White House. If the Democrats actively and forcefully make Trump's life hell, he will behave and leave office. But if they are polite and confine themselves to only their lawyers talking to his lawyers, plus an occasional harsh tweet from the Democratic leadership in the House and Senate, Trump will steal everything he can from the Federal government and never leave the White House.

What could the Democrats do? They know Trump's obvious weakness. In secret, Biden offers Trump a pardon in exchange for him stepping down. Trump would behave himself as a gentleman because he wants to protect his stolen fortune from the IRS tax collectors more than anything in the world.

Donald Trump Jr. is touting baseless election-rigging claims in videos posted to Facebook and Twitter asking "able-bodied" people to join an election security "army" for his father. Trump and Junior are NOT kidding.

"The radical left are laying the groundwork to steal this election from my father," Trump Jr. said in the video posted by the Trump campaign. He added, "Their plan is to add millions of fraudulent ballots that can cancel your vote and overturn the election." Perhaps the Trump army will burn fraudulent ballots at the Post Office before counting? We'll see as Trump has said a thousand times.

Moody's: A Democratic Election Sweep Would Be Great for the Economy

In every possible category, a Democratic sweep is better for the country than any other scenario. Moody’s even projects that Democrats would be better for the budget deficit than Republicans.

You can read the full report here, but it’s pretty easy to summarize. If Democrats win, they’ll spend money to stimulate the economy out of its COVID-19 funk and this will help everybody. The spending will largely be financed by taxing the rich, which has only a small negative effect on the economy. But if Republicans win, they’ll keep the purse strings closed and instead pursue yet more tax cuts for the rich and trade wars with China. Neither one is especially good for the economy. It’s so simple.

Republicans: Ha Ha Ha, No, the President Didn’t Really Mean That About the Peaceful Transition of Power, Ha Ha

President Implies He Might Try to Hold Office by Force If He Loses Election.

Independent voters are going to answer the poll question, “Should there be a huge disruption to the way the United States conducts the transition of presidential power,” with “No.” So Republican damage control is underway, but it is extremely doubtful the GOP Senators truthfully mean that they will actually allow Biden to be President.

Did any GOP Senator say the president should stop his campaign’s lawyers from pursuing lawsuits whose goal is to make the election process more confusing by complicating the process of voting by mail during a time when going to the polls would be a dangerous risk for older and otherwise vulnerable citizens? No, none of the statements got into that whole business.

All promises the Senators are making now about Trump graciously stepping down will expire on Election Day. On the next day the Senators start saying that the Democrats cheated-cheated-cheated.

The Political Economy of Saving the Planet

Noam Chomsky: At the time of writing, concern for the COVID-19 crisis is virtually all-consuming. That’s understandable. It is severe and is severely disrupting lives. But it will pass, though at horrendous cost, and there will be recovery. There will not be recovery from the melting of the arctic ice sheets and the other consequences of global warming.

Not everyone is ignoring the advancing existential crisis. The sociopaths dedicated to accelerating the disaster continue to pursue their efforts, relentlessly. As before, Trump and his courtiers take pride in leading the race to destruction. As the United States was becoming the epicenter of the pandemic, thanks in no small measure to their folly, the White House cabal released its budget proposals. As expected, the proposals call for even deeper cuts in healthcare support and environmental protection, instead favoring the bloated military and the building of Trump’s Great Wall. And to add an extra touch of sadism, “the budget promotes a fossil fuel ‘energy boom’ in the United States, including an increase in the production of natural gas and crude oil.”

Meanwhile, to drive another nail in the coffin that Trump and associates are preparing for the nation and the world, their corporate-run EPA weakened auto emission standards, thus enhancing environmental destruction and killing more people from pollution. As expected, fossil fuel companies are lining up in the forefront of the appeals of the corporate sector to the nanny state, pleading once again for the generous public to rescue them from the consequences of their misdeeds.

In brief, the criminal classes are relentless in their pursuit of power and profit, whatever the human consequences. And those consequences will be disastrous if their efforts are not countered, indeed overwhelmed, by those concerned for “the survival of humanity.” It is no time to mince words out of misplaced politeness. “The survival of humanity” is at risk on our present course, to quote a leaked internal memo from JPMorgan Chase, America’s largest bank, referring specifically to the bank’s genocidal policy of funding fossil fuel production.

The GOP’s Long March to Fascism Finally Arrives With Trump 2020
It turns out the most important anti-truth of recent vintage was the one about voter fraud. This is what Trump will use to steal the election if he can.

rrives-with-trump-2020

Donald Trump's refusal to commit to a peaceful transfer of power, though shocking, was no surprise. It's a dark, culminating step, although not the dark, culminating step, because that is still yet to come, of a long march, a step-by-step chipping away at democratic norms that long predates him.

At the heart of it: relentless attacks on the truth, large and small, year after year, decade after decade, until the point is reached where roughly 40 percent of the people still cling to truth, but another 40 percent have come to believe anti-truth, and the 20 percent in the middle don't know what to think. And that's how you put a knife in democracy's heart.

Lincoln's approach to a tough election could teach Trump a few things

Since President Donald Trump loves describing himself as akin to the second coming of Abraham Lincoln, he might want to take a few lessons from Lincoln, not only on how to wage a campaign for re-election but how to deal with the possibility of defeat in a time of national tumult.

First, he refused to question the legitimacy of an election in the midst of chaos.

"We can not have free government without elections," he said in a November speech, "and if the rebellion could force us to forego, or postpone, a national election, it might fairly claim to have already conquered and ruined us."

Second, Lincoln insisted on the fullest possible participation. Between 1862 and 1865, 20 northern states changed laws that required in-person voting to allow deployed soldiers to cast their ballots. True, as most historians agree, nearly 80% of the troops voted for Lincoln, but the President had no sure way of knowing in advance how much support they would provide. More importantly, never before had a candidate -- much less a president -- shown such confidence in the security of absentee ballots, or the right of voters to cast them.

In the midst of dire predictions about his own election chances, Lincoln patriotically planned for a peaceful transition of power. He went so far as to craft a memorandum that openly stated: "This morning, as for some days past, it seems exceedingly probable that this Administration will not be re-elected. Then it will be my duty to so co-operate with the President elect, as to save the Union between the election and the inauguration; as he will have secured his election on such ground that he can not possibly save it afterwards."

Oh yes, and finally, when a longtime member of the Supreme Court -- Democratic Chief Justice Roger B. Taney -- died just a few weeks before Election Day, Lincoln deferred nominating a successor until after the people had decided on their next president. Could he have rammed a nominee through Congress earlier if so disposed? Yes. In fact, when he did ultimately forward the name of Salmon P. Chase as Taney's successor, the Senate consented on the very same day!

As it happened, fate -- and Union General William Sherman -- rendered the success of all these initiatives' efforts moot. When Sherman captured Atlanta in the first week of September, the political tide quickly shifted in concert with the military. And on November 8, Lincoln won nearly 55% of the popular vote.

If Trump had publicized his income tax returns, as he promised many times, we'd have the kind of proof that ends with either jail for a traitor or exoneration for a patriotic tax payer. Oddly enough, Trump has taken his case to the Supreme Court in order to not show he is a good tax payer.

Trump and his movement are evil — but the hope-peddlers in the chattering class won't say so

Philosopher Susan Neiman, one of the world's leading experts on evil, said this about Donald Trump in a conversation with Salon last year:

“Donald Trump meets every single criterion for using the word evil — and he keeps meeting it every day. Evil is a word that should be used with caution. I believe that many people, particularly a certain type of liberal centrist, were put off by the way in which George W. Bush was described as being evil. I also argue that Bush is evil and I explored this in my book "Moral Clarity." Unfortunately, the description of "evil" has been so overused that many people just believe that it is a type of name-calling.

I disagree. When we relinquish the use of language like "evil" we are leaving the strongest linguistic weapons that we have in the hands of the people who are least equipped to use them. But I do understand the caution and anxiety about using that language. Given the way that Trump's supporters and the broader right-wing movement in America works, I am unsure if describing Trump as being evil would actually bring any clarity to the conversation. That does not mean that accurate language for describing Trump and what he represents should be avoided.”

In a recent email, Neiman offered this further warning:

“If any moral judgment commands agreement today, it's the claim that Auschwitz — the Nazi concentration camp that has become shorthand for the mass murder of men, women and children because of their ethnic heritage — was evil. But fascism didn't begin with Auschwitz; it began with a series of attacks on the rule of law and the media that tested the German public's readiness to accept them. Anyone who has followed the news over the past several years has seen how Trump and his enablers have increasingly tested our capacity for outrage by undermining one moral principle after the next.

Their determination to fill Ruth Bader Ginsburg's seat is only the latest example. Should they succeed, and win a second term by whatever means, there would be little to rein in full-fledged fascism. And Americans who are now contemplating moving abroad should know that what happens in the U.S. affects the whole world; there will be few places to escape Trump's influence.”

Most members of the mainstream American media and other political observers will not publicly state that Donald Trump and his movement are evil — because that then demands they do something about it.

I'll give you an extremely simple example of evil:

William Barr stated on September 2, 2020 in a CNN interview:
“We indicted someone in Texas, 1,700 ballots collected from people who could vote, he made them out and voted for the person he wanted to.”

I know why Barr said it, since Trump says the same except with no details. Barr is lying his head off. What he said happened never happened.

What Barr is doing isn't Auschwitz. It is the "Arbeit Macht Frei" sign at Auschwitz, which means "Work Sets You Free" in German, which was a total lie.

Can one do evil without being evil? This was the puzzling question that the philosopher Hannah Arendt grappled with when she reported for The New Yorker in 1961 on the war crimes trial of Adolph Eichmann, the Nazi operative responsible for organizing the transportation of millions of Jews and others to various concentration camps in support of the Nazi’s Final Solution.

Arendt found Eichmann an ordinary, rather bland, bureaucrat, who in her words, was ‘neither perverted nor sadistic’, but ‘terrifyingly normal’. He acted without any motive other than to diligently advance his career in the Nazi bureaucracy. Eichmann was not an amoral monster, she concluded in her study of the case, Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil (1963). Instead, he performed evil deeds without evil intentions, a fact connected to his ‘thoughtlessness’, a disengagement from the reality of his evil acts. Eichmann ‘never realized what he was doing’ due to an ‘inability… to think from the standpoint of somebody else’. Lacking this particular cognitive ability, he ‘committed crimes under circumstances that made it well-nigh impossible for him to know or to feel that he was doing wrong’.

Arendt dubbed these collective characteristics of Eichmann ‘the banality of evil’: he was not inherently evil, but merely shallow and clueless, a ‘joiner’, in the words of one contemporary interpreter of Arendt’s thesis: he was a man who drifted into the Nazi Party, in search of purpose and direction, not out of deep ideological belief. (I know thousands of Trump lovers and they are purposeless, directionless people who are pulled like iron filings by Trump's magnetism. )

“Own the Libs” Is Gradually Morphing Into “Kill the Libs”

If Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis gets his way, people who merely attend a protest that results in property damage will be prosecuted for felonies. Yelling at someone in a restaurant as part of such a protest will be a criminal offense. And a driver who kills demonstrators with his car will not be liable for their deaths, as long as he is “fleeing for safety from a mob.”

These are just a few of the policies proposed by DeSantis in a package meant to chill dissent and punish those in the streets demanding an end to racist police violence. Republican leaders in the Florida Legislature have promised to file the bill in 2021. By introducing it now, DeSantis clearly hopes to rile up Trump’s base in Florida, one of the most crucial swing states, with fears of black-clad cabals rampaging through their gated communities. But the specifics of the proposal are worth close consideration, because it represents a rising consensus among conservative leaders under Donald Trump: A governing ethos that once boiled down to “troll the libs” is steadily escalating toward “kill the libs.”

Applause for the killing of the right’s political nemeses is everywhere these days, popping up wherever the GOP can be found. It was there in one of Trump’s first tweets about the George Floyd protests: “When the looting starts, the shooting starts.” It was at the Republican National Convention, which honored Mark and Patricia McCloskey, a random St. Louis couple who earned a moment of fame for threatening protesters with guns, as esteemed representatives of the party. It’s in ads for Republicans like Georgia Sen. Kelly Loeffler, whose recent TV spot suggests she’ll “eliminate the liberal scribes,” and QAnon supporter Marjorie Taylor Greene, who posted a photo of herself brandishing an assault rifle next to images of Reps. Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Rashida Tlaib. “Squad’s worst nightmare,” it read.

The rhetoric is repulsive. But the GOP’s kill-the-libs ethos is not limited to violent rhetoric. It’s becoming policy. And I don’t just mean DeSantis’ bill — indifference to American death, as long as the Americans dying are liberals, is one of the many horrors we’ve been forced to witness this year.

From the very start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Trump has explicitly, shamelessly hastened the deaths of tens of thousands of Americans living in blue states, then smirked as they perished. Every step of the administration’s pandemic response has been undergirded by the assumption that it’s fine for the president’s putative opponents to die. In March, the federal government shorted several blue states on the protective equipment and ventilators they’d requested from the national stockpile (while furnishing GOP-led Florida, which carries the most electoral votes of any swing state, with far more supplies than it needed at the time). One public health expert involved in the White House’s coronavirus task force told Vanity Fair that “the political folks” on the team dismissed the idea of producing a national pandemic response plan once it appeared that the virus “was going to be relegated to Democratic states.” According to a “senior administration official” who spoke to the Washington Post, it took evidence that COVID-19 was killing “our people” in red states and would probably start killing more people in swing states to get Trump to care about stopping the spread of the virus. Trump has also publicly argued against coronavirus-related relief bills because he believes they’d help blue states more than red states.

These have always been the stakes of politics: When lawmakers block Medicaid expansion, slash funding for affordable housing, bow to police unions, or redistribute wealth from the bottom to the top, they’re expressing their beliefs about who deserves to live and who deserves to die, whose lives matter and whose lives don’t. The pandemic and the national uprising for racial justice are slightly new terrains, but the stakes haven’t changed. The quiet part is just getting louder.

Earlier this month, the president encouraged his supporters to stop counting the people who’ve died in blue states as part of the official U.S. COVID-19 death toll. “If you take the blue states out … we’re really at a very low level,” he said. It was as if their deaths, which resulted from his politicized negligence, were no loss at all.

Trump has hundreds of millions in personal debt. He does not have the resources to repay it, since his business is losing money.

Personal financial trouble has always been a red flag when it comes to filling sensitive government positions, because it’s an open invitation to corruption.

So the confirmation that the nation’s chief law enforcement and national security official — whose business empire already offers many opportunities for undue influence — is drowning in debt is chilling.

Beyond that, analysts of business finance have long known that high levels of debt, enough to pose a substantial risk of bankruptcy, create destructive incentives. Instead of investing in the future, the owners of highly indebted businesses are tempted to engage in asset stripping, getting the money out before the creditors stake their claims.

Owners of debt-hobbled businesses are also tempted to take big risks, even at bad odds, because if they get lucky, they might save themselves; if they don’t, it’s someone else’s problem. Heads they win, tails the creditors lose.

So now we have a deeply indebted business owner with every incentive to engage in malfeasance — except that in addition to running his business, he’s running the United States of America.

But he may be about to lose that special position, and whatever financial defense it may provide.

Think about that. Also think about the fact that Trump constantly complains about almost nonexistent voter fraud — he has never accepted the fact that he lost the popular vote four years ago — and that he has repeatedly refused to say that he will accept election results if he loses.

I think you are placing too much blame on Trump. Trump has always been a dirt bag for as long as I've known about him. I would place the blame on Republican voters who chose Trump in the primary and will vote for him again in 2020. They knew what he was. His obviously defective way of life and business was why they picked him. There is a nice article about what kind of people are Trump voters. I've had to deal with these crooked people for 68 years. In Trump they found somebody as defective as themselves, while Bush II wasn't close enough to what they wanted.

Democrats Need to Wake Up: The Trump Movement Is Shot Through With Fascism
https://theintercept.com/2020/09/27/trump-supporters-fascism-election/

In order to win this presidential contest, liberals need to accept that Trump supporters do not care if he were to scrap millions of mail-in votes or to welcome, and even solicit, Russian interference for his cause. Not only do some Trump supporters understand that he is an autocrat who will cheat the rules to stay in power, that’s precisely what they like about him. The left should understand that many Trump supporters inherently believe that they would fare better under an autocratic system of white supremacy than under a multiracial democracy.

History, here, is telling. Historical comparisons should not be thrown around haphazardly or promiscuously, but this careful comparison between the past and the present needs to be made. One of historians’ most confounding tasks has been to explain what made supposedly honorable, civilized Germans actively participate in the killing of millions of people. In his seminal, if hotly debated, book, “Hitler’s Willing Executioners: Ordinary Germans and the Holocaust,” Daniel Jonah Goldhagen disputes all the myths that historians previously offered to explain Germans’ willing participation in such an atrocity.

Goldhagen debunks the explanation of situational pressure, that hard times rendered Germans incapable of saying no. He disproves the myth of sheer self-interest, that ordinary Germans were just trying to get by. He dismisses the theory of bureaucratic myopia, that toiling Germans were too busy focusing on the minutia of survival to be aware of the Nazis’ larger systemic killing. He refutes the caricature of cultural predisposition, that Germans were automatons, inclined to mindlessly obey authority. And he dismisses the prevalent impulses to exaggerate the sway of misinformation, that Germans were seduced into submission by Leni Riefenstahl’s magic-making or their führer’s charisma.

Like Goldhagen does with Nazis, we have to avoid pat answers.

Could present Americans participate in slaughtering millions as Germans did? Hardly. And there are no useful comparisons to be made between Hitler’s political methods and Trump’s. Significant differences distinguish the political impacts of the Third Reich versus the Trump administration. This country is no Nazi Germany. But America under Trump demonstrably treads into fascist territory.

Ours is a country where the president can witness 5-million-plus acres burn, millions of residents flee their homes, miles of toxic air blight the sky, blackouts, triple-digit heat waves, and literally not be bothered. We have a leader who knew the deadliness of a virus, lied about his awareness, and still indifferently presides over the subsequent deaths of 200,000 and counting. Even during the country’s bleak distress, Trump supporters — from his cabinet down to ordinary, diehard voters — put his money and their collective political power ahead of human life, undoubtedly a fundamental feature of autocracy.

So I can’t help but reveal how the excuses made on behalf of Nazi-era Germans resemble the collective naïveté — the delusional pass — afforded to roughly 40 percent of our people. America’s democratic free fall is not just Trump. Ours is a nation full of mini-fascists: Trump’s Willing Executioners.

The investigative reports and the common depictions of Trump supporters at dinner-table conversation deny or radically minimize those perpetrators’ ideology, compromised values, and complicity in Trump’s autocracy. Fox News is the most widely watched cable network in this country by a factor of five. Though Fox News primes its viewers for their absolutist outlook, Trump voters are active agents in this drama.

We can’t dismiss Trump’s Willing Executioners as mindless victims to the president’s charisma and Fox disinformation, or as practical taxpayers who are just voting in their economic interest. We have to take their cognition and values seriously. We have to name their political alignment for what it is: a very conscious choice. They are not automatons sleepwalking through history and helpless to the reigning propaganda: They understand the massive incentive structures that draw them to willingly and actively support this autocratic regime.

Trumptards, like Trump himself, are just evil pieces of shit.

What really irritates the hell of me is the Trump lovers also love H-bombs. More bombs is better! That attitude shows when Trump cancelled nuclear weapon treaties. I saw this about START (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty):

President Donald Trump is planning to rev up the nuclear arms race a few weeks into his second term.

The New START strategic arms-reduction treaty, signed by President Barack Obama and Russia’s then-President Dmitry Medvedev in 2010, expires on Feb. 5 unless the two countries agree to extend it by another five years. Trump has indicated he has no interest in extending it unless the Russians make certain concessions, which have nothing to do with the treaty and which they have no interest in making.

Trump asked senior military officers how long it would take to load the thousands of nuclear warheads we have in storage onto long-range bombers and submarine-based missiles, when New START expires.

If Trump is trying to put the threat on the table as a bargaining chip, he’s going into the game with a weak hand. First, especially in the COVID economy, we can’t spend any adversary into oblivion without spending ourselves into oblivion too.

Second, Russia has even more nuclear weapons in storage than the United States. In other words, anything Trump can threaten to do, Vladimir Putin can match and then some. Under those circumstances, Trump’s bargaining strategy is self-defeating.

Third, the Trump administration’s conditions for agreeing to extend New START are, from the Russians’ point of view, unreasonable. Trump wants China to take part in the next round of arms talks. China has no interest in doing so — and it’s an odd idea to invite them, in any case. China has about one-fifth as many active nuclear weapons as the U.S. or Russia; it has never been engaged in an arms race with either of those countries, though roping them into trilateral arms talks might spur Chinese officers to demand equality in nuclear weaponry — thus creating a new arms race where there isn’t one now.

Finally, the United States simply does not need a larger nuclear arsenal. During the negotiations for New START and the ratification debate afterward, no senior U.S. military officer argued that the treaty was placing onerous restrictions on our nuclear arsenal or on our ability to carry out national-security policy.

The big point is this: No one is arguing that the U.S. needs more nuclear weapons. It would be much cheaper to simply extend New START for another five years. The Russians have said they’re willing to do that unconditionally. We would gain no advantage from pushing them into an arms race.

It would be an act of common sense — not weakness or appeasement — to keep the current limits in place. But Trump isn’t interested in common sense when it comes to nuclear weapons; he’s interested in bluster and meaningless measures of strength about who has the most bombs, measured in thousands. But to actually explode a hundred bombs, or even a few dozen, would end the world. This is another reason for ensuring that Trump is not still president on Feb. 5.

Trump lovers feelings about H-bombs tend to follow their feelings about guns. I have a shotgun, a pistol, and a rifle. The next door neighbor, a Trump lover, has an entire room full of weapons, none kept in a gun safe. He thinks more guns and nukes means he is better protected. I am convinced that too many guns and nukes makes you dangerously less safe.

What is America really fighting over in the upcoming election? No particular issue. Not even Democrats versus Republicans.

The central fight is over Donald J. Trump.

Before Trump, most Americans weren't especially passionate about politics. But Trump's MO has been to force people to become passionate about him — to take fierce sides for or against. And he considers himself president only of the former, whom he calls "my people."

Trump came to office with no agenda except to feed his monstrous ego. He has never fueled his base. His base has fueled him. Its adoration sustains him.

So does the antipathy of his detractors. Presidents usually try to appease their critics. Trump has gone out of his way to offend them. "I do bring rage out," Trump unapologetically told journalist Bob Woodward in 2016.

In this way, he has turned America into a gargantuan projection of his own pathological narcissism.

His entire re-election platform is found in his use of the pronouns "we" and "them." "We" are people who love him, Trump Nation. "They" hate him.

In late August, near the end of his somnolent address on the South Lawn of the White House accepting the Republican nomination, Trump extemporized: "The fact is, we're here — and they're not." It drew a standing ovation.

At a recent White House news conference, a CNN correspondent asked if he condemned the behavior of his supporters in Portland, Oregon. In response, Trump charged: "Your supporters, and they are your supporters indeed, shot a young gentleman."

In Trump's eyes, CNN exists in a different country: Anti-Trump Nation.

So do the putative rioters and looters of "Biden's America." So do the inhabitants of blue states whose state and local tax deductions Trump eliminated in his tax overhaul. So do those who live in the "Democrat cities," as he calls them, whose funding he's trying to cut.

California is a big part of Anti-Trump Nation. He wanted to reject its request for aid battling wildfires "because he was so rageful that people in the state of California didn't support him," said former Department of Homeland Security Chief of Staff Miles Taylor.

New York is the capital of Anti-Trump Nation, which probably contributed to Trump "playing down" the threat of COVID-19 last March, when its virulence seemed largely confined to that metropolis. Even now, Trump claims the U.S. rate of COVID-19 deaths would be low "if you take the blue states out." That's untrue, but it's not the point. For Trump, blue states don't count because they're part of Anti-Trump Nation.

To Trump and his core enablers and supporters, the laws of Trump Nation authorize him to do whatever he wants. Anti-Trump Nation's laws constrain him, but they're illegitimate because they are made and enforced by the people who reject him.

So Trump's call to the president of Ukraine seeking help with the election was "perfect." It was fine for Russia to side with him in 2016, and it's fine for it to do so again. And of course the Justice Department, Postal Service and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention should help him win re-election. They're all aiding Trump Nation.

By a similar twisted logic, Anti-Trump Nation is dangerous. Hence, says Trump, the armed teenager who killed two in Kenosha, Wisconsin, acted in "self-defense," yet the suspected killer of a right-winger in Portland deserved the "retribution" he got when federal marshals gunned him down.

It follows that if Trump loses the election, he will not accept the result because it would be the product of Anti-Trump Nation, and Trump isn't the president of people who would vote against him. As he recently claimed, "The only way we're going to lose this election is if the election is rigged."

In the warped minds of Trump and his acolytes, this could lead to civil war. Just last week, he refused to commit to a peaceful transition of power. His consigliere Roger Stone urges him to declare "martial law" if he loses. Michael Caputo, assistant secretary of public affairs at the Department of Health and Human Services, warns "the shooting will begin" when Trump refuses to stand down.

Civil war is unlikely, but the weeks and perhaps months after Election Day will surely be fraught. Even if Trump is ultimately forced to relinquish power, his core adherents will continue to view him as their leader. If he retains power, many, if not most, Americans will consider his presidency illegitimate.

So whatever happens, Trump's megalomaniacal ego will prevail: America will have come apart over him, and Trump Nation will have seceded from Anti-Trump Nation.

The Very Strong Case for Bidenomics

The former vice president’s tax and spending claims are credible; Trump’s aren’t.

Thanks to Donald Trump’s shouting and nonstop lying, there wasn’t much of a substantive policy discussion at the debate on Tuesday.

But there were some broad — and unsurprisingly, false — assertions about economic policy. Joe Biden claimed that his tax and spending plans would create millions of jobs and promote economic growth. Trump claimed that they would destroy the economy.

Well, everything we know suggests that Biden was right and Trump wrong. And I’m not the only one saying this. Nonpartisan analysts like Moody’s Analytics and the not-exactly-socialist economists at Goldman Sachs are remarkably high on Biden’s proposals.

Before I get there, some history.

There’s a widespread perception that Republicans are better than Democrats at managing the economy. But that’s not at all what the record says.

Yes, Ronald Reagan presided over a long economic expansion; but so did Bill Clinton, and the Clinton boom was both longer and bigger. The economy did in fact add many jobs under Trump before the coronavirus struck, but this simply represented the continuation of an expansion that began under Barack Obama.

And those were the good stretches. Both Bushes presided over really poor economic performance.

Republicans also have a long history of claiming that progressive policies would lead to economic disaster. They’ve been wrong every time.

They’ve been wrong about tax hikes: When Clinton raised taxes in 1993, Republicans confidently predicted recession, but what actually happened was a huge boom. When California raised taxes under Jerry Brown, the right called it “economic suicide”; again, the economy boomed.

They’ve also been wrong about social programs. Obamacare, the G.O.P. insisted, would destroy millions of jobs. One of the dozens of attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act was actually called the “Repealing the Job-Killing Health Care Law Act.” Yet in the six years after January 2014, when the act went into full effect, the economy added almost 15 million jobs.

And let’s not forget the flip side, the many, many times Republicans promised that cutting taxes on the rich would produce an economic miracle, promises that never came true. There’s a reason conservatives still go on and on about the Reagan boom, all those years ago; it’s the only example they have that even seems to support their economic ideology. (It doesn’t, but that’s another topic.)

But there’s a difference between saying that progressive policies are not the disaster conservatives claim and saying that Biden’s plan would actually promote growth. Why are Moody’s and Goldman Sachs so high on his proposals? Why do I share that optimism?

The election is about whether or not we have Trumps, 'Jacks' vision of America, or Biden's.

I choose Biden's vision.

We will NOT get Biden's vision because the Republicans in the Federal Courts and Republicans left in the Senate will stop him cold, but at least we will be rid of fat dumb Trump and his forever flapping mouth. Maybe there will be a little entertainment from fatso fighting the IRS. Maybe fatso will start a new political party and all the Trump lovers will flock to it, abandoning the GOP to actual Conservatives.

Trump’s Turn From Immigration to the Enemy Within

Trump’s shift from demonizing immigrants to targeting leftists is straight out of the fascist playbook.

Listening to Donald Trump describe the U.S. in 2016 was to hear a story of a nation in peril of losing its identity to waves of brown-skinned invaders. Immigration and the border, particularly the urgent need to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico, dominated Trump’s campaign rhetoric.

It may have come as a surprise to some that immigration hardly came up at all in the first presidential debate of 2020. The Trump administration has increasingly and prominently centered purported threats posed by leftists, anarchists, and anti-fascists in its bid to hold onto power. This widening of the threat aperture is straight out of the authoritarian playbook, said Jason Stanley, a professor of philosophy at Yale University and author of “How Fascism Works: The Politics of Us and Them.”

In the case of Trump, the first three years of the administration featured talk of threats from MS-13 gang members, migrant caravans marching north through Mexico, Islamic State killers hidden among refugee populations and more — all were couched in terms of threats to the homeland, an “invasion” that posed a danger to national security and warranted decisive law enforcement and military responses. In some cases, such as the October 2018 migrant caravans that led to military deployments to the border during the midterm elections, the supposedly increased severity of the threat coincided with important electoral moments.

Stanley’s argument is not that the U.S. currently has a fascist government — at least not yet. Instead, he draws attention to the concerning features of Trumpism. “It’s a cult of the leader, all about Trump,” he said. “It’s a fascist social and political movement.” The identification of enemies is central to such movements, he argued, and quite often involves creating linkages between criminalized immigrant populations and the political left.

The DHS intelligence shop has repeatedly disseminated reports describing opponents of the president’s border and immigration policies as domestic terrorists. The idea the DHS sells is that leftists are bringing immigrants in to destroy the white race. Immigration is a communist plot to destroy the racial character of the nation so that the communists can take over.

The DHS is a massive quasi-military organization devoted to targeting noncitizens and vilifying them as terrorists. All Trump has got to do is move that over one little notch to focus on political opponents.
