Yes, there is a Republican ideology. That is the problem . . .

A healthy political system needs robust, competing parties to give citizens a choice of ideological, governing and policy visions. More specifically, center-right parties have long been crucial to the health of modern liberal democracies, according to the Harvard political scientist Daniel Ziblatt’s study of the emergence of democracy in Western Europe. Among other benefits, a strong center right can co-opt more palatable aspects of the far right, isolating and draining energy from the more radical elements that threaten to destabilize the system.

Today’s G.O.P. does not come close to serving this function. It has instead allowed itself to be co-opted and radicalized by Trumpism. Its ideology has been reduced to a slurry of paranoia, white grievance and authoritarian populism. Its governing vision is reactionary, a cross between obstructionism and owning the libs. Its policy agenda, as defined by the party platform, is whatever President Trump wants — which might not be so pathetic if Mr. Trump’s interests went beyond “Build a wall!”

The above claim that the Republican party has no ideology or policy agenda is completely wrong.

The policy agenda of the GOP is to cut taxes on the rich and to dismantle regulation and social insurance programs. This agenda is driven by the libertarianism of the party’s plutocratic donor class. The two major legislative initiatives of the Trump presidency were 1) a large, regressive cut in corporate taxes (which passed) and 2) the repeal of the ACA without replacement (which failed). These extreme and highly unpopular priorities did not reflect a lack of ideas or values or an ideology, they reflect the capture of the party by a wealthy libertarian elite. And the libertarian ideology of the Republican party is not due to Trump; it preceded him and will quite likely continue to animate the party when he leaves the scene.

It is the extremism of the Republican economic vision forces Republicans to stoke racism and xenophobia to win votes. It is their economic extremism that leads Republicans to reject the legitimacy of Democratic governance and to undermine free and fair elections. Reasonable people can and will disagree about exactly how much to spend on social insurance or the best way to tackle climate change. But Republicans reject the premises of these debates. Given their uncompromising moral beliefs – that regulation is misguided and overbearing, that taxation is theft, and that most Americans are “takers” – what ground is there for reasonable differences of opinion that can be resolved through elections?

It is a serious problem that so many people – including, evidently, the New York Times editorial board – do not understand what is driving the extreme behavior of the Republican party.

I guess Ted watched a whole bunch more NeoCon videos today, huh?

I find it quite amusing that he has yet to admit that The Lincoln Project is made up of people he used to hate that gave themselves a pretty name and said stuff Ted wanted to hear. And rather than figuring out that I'm not lying to him when I tell him as much and at least find a different outfit to peddle his propaganda, he continues to double down nearly every day with a new video from them and prove that his TDS is making him exponentially stupid as time goes by.

Trump’s 8 Steps

Though all these steps were pursued by the Trump Administration, the level of success was variable. And we still don’t know how well they have done on the most important step of all – Step 8. We’re about to find out in a few short days.

Step 1: Delegitimize all authoritative sources of information – mainstream media, scientists, economists, historians, other experts.

Step 2: Use control of government resources to foment conspiracy theories and generate fake information (including fake data) to delegitimize popular predecessor.

Step 3. Use the judiciary and the legislature to criminalize criticism and dissent.

Step 4 Stop keeping track of data that would quantify inconvenient facts about climate change, economic inequality, social problems, civil rights problems, gun violence, police brutality, corporate greed, foreign wars, etc.

Step 5: Use control of government institutions to revise previous data and generate new false data to shape perceptions of prior dysfunction and current progress.

Step 6: Divide the opposition by tangling them in internal feuds on issues such as trade, race, political correctness, Israel, etc.

Step 7: Pack the bureaucracy and judiciary as far as possible with compliant functionaries who support the program.

Step 8: Use government institutions to ensure single-party electoral dominance for the foreseeable future, thus removing all fear of public accountability.

#4 is the only one that has any hope of not happening. Those things can still be done by independent people and underground organizations.

I would add: Step 9: Control the Internet (which they have been trying to do). Or at least what most people think of as The Internet; The most heavily trafficked sites. It's amusing to me to think we would be heading back to the days when some knuckleheads/people thought the Internet was AOL and that was it. Limited, filtered, "curated."

#1 They've de-legitimatized themselves.

And that started long before Trump was even on The Apprentice.

#6 The Identitarian Left has caused all of the racial strife in 2020 and the years leading up to it by pushing Marxist ideas in schools and in the mainstream.

Trump just happened to be president during the worst of it... so far.

Trump signed an executive order that will give him significant control of the Federal bureaucracy AFTER he leaves the White House, if he starts immediately upon being reelected. https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/executive-order-creati
ng-schedule-f-excepted-service
/

While the White House claims the "Executive Order on Creating Schedule F in the Excepted Service" would allow government to "operate more efficiently," a vengeful Donald Trump could fire thousands of competent civil servants, especially the ones who have contradicted him on Covid-19, and replace them with Republican loyalists. Trump could not do that to civil servants until this executive order so he simply redefined who he can arbitrarily and capriciously fire when the whim hits him. It's not surprising he didn't try this until now, since he didn't think he could get away with it. But if he is reelected, he knows he can.

During his 2016 presidential campaign, Donald Trump — even though he had dubbed himself “the king of debt” — promised to slash the mounting national debt until it was completely eliminated within eight years. Four years on, how’s that going? Not well. The National debt is more than $27 trillion, up from less than $20 trillion when Trump took office.

Trump Killed the Pax Americana

www.nytimes.com/2020/10/29/opinion/trump-trade-international-relations
.html

There are, I suppose, some people who still imagine that if and when Donald Trump leaves office we’ll see a rebirth of civility and cooperation in U.S. politics. They are, of course, hopelessly naive. America in the 2020s will remain a deeply polarized nation, rife with crazy conspiracy theories and, quite possibly, plagued by right-wing terrorism.

But that won’t be Trump’s legacy. The truth is that we were already well down that road before he came along. And on the other side, if the Democrats win big, I expect to see many of Trump’s substantive policies reversed, and then some. Environmental protection and the social safety net will probably end up substantially stronger, taxes on the rich substantially higher, than they were under Barack Obama.

Trump’s lasting legacy, I suspect, will come in international affairs. For almost 70 years America played a special role in the world, one that no nation had ever played before. We’ve now lost that role, and I don’t see how we can ever get it back.

You see, American dominance represented a new form of superpower hegemony.

Our government’s behavior was by no means saintly; we did some terrible things, supporting dictators and undermining democracies from Iran to Chile. And sometimes it seemed as if one of our main goals was to make the world safe for multinational corporations.

But we weren’t a crude exploiter, pillaging other countries for our own gain. The Pax Americana arguably dated from the enactment of the Marshall Plan in 1948; that is, from the moment when a conquering nation chose to help its defeated foes rebuild rather than demanding that they pay tribute.

And we were a country that kept its word.

To take the area I know best, the United States took the lead in creating a rules-based system for international trade. The rules were designed to fit American ideas about how the world should work, placing limits on the ability of governments to intervene in markets. But once the rules were in place, we followed them ourselves. When the World Trade Organization ruled against the United States, as it did for example in the case of George W. Bush’s steel tariffs, the U.S. government accepted that judgment.

We also stood by our allies. We might have trade or other disputes with Germany or South Korea, but nobody considered the possibility that America would stand aside if either country was invaded.

Trump changed all that.

What, for example, is the point of a rules-based trading system when the system’s creator and erstwhile guardian imposes tariffs based on transparently bad-faith arguments — such as the claim that imports of aluminum from Canada (!) threaten national security?

How useful is America as an ally when the president suggests that he might not defend European nations because, in his judgment, they don’t spend enough on NATO?

Is America still the leader of the free world when top officials seem friendlier to nations like Hungary, where democracy has effectively collapsed — or even to murderous autocracies like Saudi Arabia — than to longstanding democratic allies?

Now, if Trump is defeated, a Biden administration will probably do its best to restore America’s traditional role in the world. We’ll start following trade rules; we’ll rejoin the Paris climate accord and rescind plans to withdraw from the World Health Organization. We’ll assure our allies that we have their backs, and rebuild alliances with other democracies.

But even with the best will in the world, this egg can’t be unscrambled. No matter how good a global citizen America becomes in the next few years, everyone will remember that we’re a country that elected someone like Donald Trump, and could do it again. It will take decades if not generations to regain the lost trust.

The effects may, at first, be subtle. Other countries probably won’t rush to confront a Biden administration. There might even be a sort of global honeymoon, as the world breathes a sigh of relief.

But the loss of trust in America will gradually have a corrosive effect. A trade expert once said to me that the great danger, if America turns protectionist, wouldn’t be retaliation, it would be emulation: If we ignore the rules, other countries will follow our example. The same will be true on other fronts. There will be more economic and military bullying of small countries by their larger neighbors. There will be more blatant election-rigging in nominally democratic nations.

In other words, even if Trump goes, the world will become a more dangerous, less fair place than it was, because everyone will wonder and worry whether the United States has become the kind of country where such things can happen again.

Why Freedom means something different for conservatives and liberals

The political right today is marked by a deep conviction that its freedom stands imperiled everywhere. Social distancing measures and face mask requirements, conservatives argue, impinge upon their personal freedom; baking cakes for gay marriages or providing contraception insurance for employees violates their religious freedom; university safe spaces and political correctness censor their freedom of speech in the classroom; expanding health care undermines their liberty. Each of these ways of thinking about freedom is connected to the idea that the state must be curtailed in order to safeguard individual rights.

However, this idea of freedom, argues the political historian Annelien de Dijn in her new book Freedom: An Unruly History, is a relatively recent invention. Seeing a threat to their class interests and property rights, wealthy conservative elites launched an ideological campaign. As an alternative, they invented the idea that political freedom was to be found in protecting individuals by limiting the sphere of government.

Annelien de Dijn: My interest in the history of freedom was sparked about a decade ago, when the Obama administration attempted to reform the health care system, which sparked a fierce backlash. Thousands of Americans took to the streets to march against Obamacare, claiming that it posed a mortal danger to freedom. I found that very puzzling. How can you say that expanding health care—a measure supported by an overwhelming majority of Americans—is something that undermines your liberty? More generally, why insist that every attempt by the government to improve the lives of its citizens diminishes their freedom? Where did this individualistic or even nihilistic conception of freedom come from?

I think that the questions that originally spurred my research remain just as relevant today as they were a decade ago, when I started writing the book. If the US response to Covid-19 has made anything clear, it’s that this anti-government way of thinking about freedom is still quite prevalent.

If you take the long view, it becomes clear that our current way of thinking about freedom—being able to do what you want without state interference—is actually a fairly recent invention. For centuries, people in what we now think of as “the West” identified being free with exercising collective control over government. They had what I call a democratic conception of freedom: A free state was one in which the people ruled itself. To them, the key to preserving political freedom was staving off elite domination.

Today we tend to put more faith in countermajoritarian institutions as a way to preserve liberty. We tend to think that our freedoms are best protected by institutions such as the Supreme Court—a council of elders supposedly above politics. That’s because we have come to think that democratic majorities, not elite rule, are the real threat to liberty. This would have been very strange to the ancient Greeks and Romans. They believed that individual rights and liberties were mainly threatened by autocratic kings or arrogant elites.

In the 19th century, political thinkers in Europe and the United States began to reject this ancient democratic conception of freedom in favor of a different way of thinking. Freedom, many came to argue, was not a matter of who governed. Instead, what determined whether you were free or not was the extent to which you were governed. The smaller the government, the freer you were—regardless of who was in control.

6ix, your mind is a fishbowl. It is grotesque that the ideas swimming around in your head were spawned by publicists working for the wealthy. 6ix, you need to dump the murky water out and sterilize the bowl.

There’s a widespread idea in the United States that socialism leads to unfreedom, that it is a totalitarian ideology, alien to our culture and values, as Donald Trump expressed it. Franklin Delano Roosevelt argued that the goal of the New Deal was to “restore to the people a wider freedom” by destroying economic tyranny and “to give to 1936 as the founders gave to 1776.” Herbert Hoover, a wealthy man and Roosevelt's predecessor, was furious at him, guiding the Hoover Institution to fight against everything Roosevelt accomplished. Trump, another wealthy man, continues the fight of the wealthy against everyone, using indoctrinated poor as the soldiers. If you want to fight for the rights of the wealthy, 6ix, thinking that you are helping yourself, go right ahead. It is not to my advantage to stop you.

Before the pandemic, the debt had already increased by $5 trillion, all thanks to Trump. Then Trump jumped on the CARES Act, thinking that $2 trillion more debt would guarantee his reelection. He failed to understand, although the CDC told him, that the pandemic would continue long after the money was gone. Mitch McConnell understood and he would not approve of another $2 trillion for the Heroes Act, since most of the money would end up being spent by Biden, in the very likely case Trump lost. Unless Trump wins the election, Mitch is not passing the Heroes Act or any other. Mitch knows that the worse he makes things for a Biden Presidency, the sooner another Republican will be President.

The Philosophy That Makes Amy Coney Barrett So Dangerous

In 1987, Robert Bork was denied confirmation to the Supreme Court because his originalist beliefs were deemed a serious threat to constitutional rights. Originalism is no less dangerous for those rights today, yet Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s repeated statements professing her belief in originalism have been met with little objection.

Originalists believe that the meaning of a constitutional provision is fixed when it was adopted and that it can change only by constitutional amendment. Under this view, the First Amendment means the same thing as when it was adopted in 1791 and the 14th Amendment means the same thing as when it was ratified in 1868.

But rights in the 21st century should not be determined by the understandings and views of centuries ago. This would lead to terrible results. The same Congress that voted to ratify the 14th Amendment, which assures equal protection of the laws, also voted to segregate the District of Columbia public schools. Following originalism would mean that Brown v. Board of Education was wrongly decided in declaring laws requiring segregation of schools unconstitutional.

In fact, under the original public meaning of the Constitution, it would be unconstitutional to elect a woman as president or vice president until the Constitution is amended. Article II refers to them with the pronoun “he,” and there is no doubt that original understanding was that only men could hold these offices.

Throughout American history, the Supreme Court has rejected originalism and protected countless rights that cannot possibly be justified under that theory. For example, the court has interpreted the word “liberty” in the Constitution to protect the right to marry, to procreate, to custody of one’s children, to keep the family together, to control the upbringing of one’s children, to purchase and use contraceptives, to obtain an abortion, to engage in private adult consensual same-sex sexual activity, and to refuse medical treatment.

Judge Barrett doesn’t need to explicitly say that she would vote to overrule Roe v. Wade because she has left no doubt by saying that she is an originalist in the mold of Justice Antonin Scalia, for whom she clerked.

“His judicial philosophy is mine too,” she told the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Justice Scalia, who died in 2016, repeatedly and unequivocally urged that Roe be overruled, arguing that the Constitution says nothing about abortion and states should be allowed to decide the question for themselves. Judge Barrett’s scholarly writings suggest she would have no hesitation in overruling Roe, either, nor those “liberty” decisions. She wrote, “I tend to agree with those who say that a justice’s duty is to the Constitution and that it is thus more legitimate for her to enforce her best understanding of the Constitution rather than a precedent she thinks clearly in conflict with it.”

The rejection of originalism is not new. Early in the 19th century, Chief Justice John Marshall wrote that “we must never forget that it is a Constitution we are expounding,” a Constitution “meant to be adapted and endure for ages to come.”

It is a myth to say that an “original public understanding” can be identified for most constitutional provisions because so many people were involved in drafting and ratifying them. James Madison and Alexander Hamilton disagreed about such fundamental questions as whether the president possesses any inherent powers.

Moreover, it is a myth to think that even identifying an originalist understanding can solve most modern constitutional issues. Can original public meaning really provide useful insights about the meaning of the Fourth Amendment and whether the police can take DNA from a suspect to see if it matches evidence in unsolved crimes or obtain stored cellular phone location information without a warrant?

To make it clearly understood by 6ix how much danger Amy Coney Barrett faces if she actually does what she, for now, implicitly intends to do:

Historians and Democrats say that the 2nd Amendment was to arm militias to put down slave rebellions. Republicans say that the purpose of the amendment was to give citizens the opportunity to kill tyrannical federal government officials. Since slavery ended, the 2nd has no purpose, according to its original meaning and intentions. But Republicans, having imagined a new purpose for the 2nd, did not imagine the new purpose being used against them. Before Republican Supreme Court justices, in 5 to 4 rulings, tyrannically trash decisions or laws made by Democrats, they might want to reinterpret the 2nd to match its original meaning.

How Slave Owners Dictated the Language of the 2nd Amendment
www.thedailybeast.com/how-slave-owners-dictated-the-language-of-the-2n
d-amendment

Virginia Governor Patrick Henry saw danger lurking in Article 1, Section 8, of the Constitution, which gives Congress the power to provide for “organizing, arming, and disciplining” militias.

Henry feared that without checks upon it, Congress could undermine the ability of militias in Virginia and elsewhere in the South to suppress slave uprisings and pursue runaway slaves.

The militia issue was important enough for Henry to see it as grounds for opposing ratification of the Constitution. The positive power Congress had over militias, Henry reasoned, could easily be turned into restrictive power.

It took Madison two drafts to get the Second Amendment into the single sentence it is today. His careful wording was deliberate. In drawing a connection between militias and the right to bear arms rather than simply defending the right to bear arms, Madison, a slave holder himself, was speaking to his state’s ruling powers. Only the white men in the Virginia militia had the right to bear arms.

By the way...

That's a very interesting "hidden" thread you have there, Kiki. (I'm truly touched that the copy paste stuff you put in reply to me has taken the top spot on the thread).

That's been archived too.

It would seem I'm not the only one that has backed up Second's death threats to the president and advocacy for killing your bosses and stealing everything they own.

Although it should be noted that, yes indeed, Second went back through his own posts and tried to delete that evidence.

No. My advice to you is to kill any boss who fucks you over, steal his money, and don't get caught. You'd be making the world a better place. The author Emily Guendelsberger was earning money and hoping she made the world better by writing about it, but she would have actual done far more good for the world by murdering her bosses. It's kind of like a slave uprising: if you don't kill the slave owner, the slaves will end back in slavery. See the American Civil War. That problem of slavery was solved with cold steel and hot lead fired at slave owners, not by writing books or talking about the hardships of slavery. Slave owners knew they had a good thing for themselves back then and bad bosses know they have a good thing for themselves now and neither bosses nor slave owners will change unless violently forced.

Have you ever watched Firefly? The entire cast, the production crew at FOX, the Firefly writers, and the executive producer Joss Whedon were calling for instantaneous executions of people who were annoying or in the way of Mal. Where were the judges for the poor people about to die? Where was the jury? When was the sentencing phase by a compassionate judge? None of that was on Firefly. Mal, Zoe, Jayne and River were always skipping over all those intermediate steps and going directly to execution in less than a minute after the soon to be dead man offended the sensibilities of the crew of Serenity. On the other hand, Trump has had a lot more than a minute to annoy people. It's time to make up your mind about Trump, take careful aim at him, then pull the trigger. Or vote against Trump, whichever action pleases you more. Do it to memorialize Firefly!

Just now I remembered that Trump has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He is only an actor playing a part. If anybody kills him, there will be fake blood. Then he will stand up and the camera crew will shoot the next scene.

Trump can kill 700 people because he can't shut up. The Supreme Court can kill even more than 700 by declaring Obamacare unconstitutional. What Will Happen to the Lawyers Who Aided and Abetted Donald Trump? Some of those lawyers ended up on the Supreme Court, 6ixStringJack.

The legal profession is supposed to have standards.

Even before the 2020 election is decided, there has been an almost unnatural amount of attention dedicated to what comes next. Specifically, what comes next for Donald Trump and the potential criminal liability he may face in the coming years. Jonathan Chait has written about the moral imperative to hold Trump liable for his illegal conduct in areas ranging from white-collar crime to abuse of the pardon power to violations of the Hatch Act, as a means of restoring the norms and values of the law. Sam Tanenhaus has observed that perhaps the nation would be better served by a blue-ribbon commission, modeled on the Church Committee, to probe Trump’s wrongdoing. Bob Bauer and Jack Goldsmith differ only as to the wisdom of undertaking a criminal prosecution. But all of these inquiries elide a question that is almost more central to any kind of reckoning about what happened to the rule of law under Donald Trump: What is to be done with his enablers?

If Mary Trump is correct, and I believe she is, the ethical problem isn’t limited to Donald Trump. The problem is also the many powerful people who—under the guise of “minimizing the damage” or behaving as “adults in the room”—sanctioned, effectuated, and enabled rampant lawlessness ranging from family separations to attempting to bribe Ukraine into interfering with the 2020 election. Let’s just say it outright: Donald Trump managed to do what he did with the help of dozens of lawyers—lawyers who have either slid out of the public debate and into big law firms or continue to aid and abet.

I don't believe in pre-crime.

You're innocent until proven guilty. And though I've only just woken up today and haven't actually seen Trump or ACB speak, I'm going to assume that they're still alive and well. I also have no evidence of any bosses that you've killed in your past either.

But if something were to happen to either Trump or to ACB, we've got your fanfic porn where you feel that having done the deed to either of them would be very Mal-like and shiny right here.

You're a future possible person of interest.

Although we all know that you're nothing but a lying pussy, and if something like this were to happen it almost certainly wasn't by you.

Meanwhile, keep pretending that you're not afraid that this is archived.

I'm fairly confident that the post I have on you would have already seen FEDs knocking on your door had you made it on Facebook instead of fff.net RWED.

Show me what you've got. You've an extra hour because Daylight Saving(s) Time ended. Remember Signym and 1kiki were/are threatening to sue me for libeling them as Russian trolls? "When?", I ask. Nothing from them. You and they are insincere, talking big, pretending, doing nothing, even by the low standards of fff.net. But that is typical for Trump defenders. Much big talk and very little action.

Still talking about this, huh?

You'd better get to work deleting as many of your posts as possible before more get archived.

Enjoy your Sunday.

Have you ever noticed how unscientific Trump lovers are? I have because I supervise them and the nature of some jobs will test how they think. Their problem solving skills at work are as weak as their political ideas. There probably is a connection and a Nobel Prize for whoever explains it.

Two adjoining paragraphs from review of a Nobel prize winner's book:

Evolution points towards common ancestry. This in turn implies genetic similarity, especially in those genes controlling fundamental processes, and it turns out from Nurse’s work that one gene of central interest in connection with yeast cell division also turns out to be involved in human cell division, and hence in human cancers.

Evolution-denying creationism implies renouncing huge areas of science, something that many of us tend to think of as a mainly American problem. Nurse’s early experience shows otherwise. (He's British.) Learning about evolution at school, he suggested to his Baptist minister that Genesis was not literally true, but a description of God’s workings, framed in the language of its time. The minister replied that faith in the literal truth of Genesis was essential, Nurse left his church, and so began his transition from religious belief to skeptical agnosticism.

Maybe an example from the book review to clarify what I mean about Trump lovers having weak problem solving skills? COVID-19 was already showing when this book was written that our protection from infectious diseases is far from complete. Worldwide, access to medical care is extremely uneven,3 as is the political willingness to pay attention to clinical reality. As Paul Nurse put it a few months ago when writing this book, and as is all too obviously true now,

"It is astonishing that politicians in some developed nations should have ignored advice from scientists and experts and have weakened measures to deal with epidemics and pandemics such as these."

Nobody knows anything about anything.

I laugh at people on both sides of this issue because the chances that both of them are completely wrong are just as good as the chances that they're both absolutely right and the two sides worked together in tandem. Or we could just be living in the Matrix, or there really is a drunk flying spaghetti monster that rules over us all.

Maybe you should take some of your religious skepticism and apply it to your own cult-like behavior.

I can't get more blunt than this: My skepticism has kept me rich because it made me unimpressed by the wealth-sapping falsehoods sold by Republicans to the middle-class. But I wouldn't have any wealth to protect if I didn't strongly believe. With weak belief, there is weak motivation to do more than the minimum. Add to that the high probability a wealthy person is trying to trick you out of what little you have and that is where most Americans will spend their entire lives.

Trump lovers explain their weak problem solving skills to CNN's Elle Reeve visiting Carter County, Missouri to speak with public health officials who have become unlikely villains to the town's residents.

Immediately stopped reading after that lie.

Thanks for doing us all the favor of always prefacing your unrelated replies to us with the lie about being rich so we don't have to waste our time reading any further.
