I think it may have something to do with Sig's endless need to criticize America. Being Polish of Russian descent she's jealous. I believe also to establish herself as an intellectual. The problem she has is her take on things is corroded with misinformation and lies. Her self-centered climate corrodes ideals and concerns about social justice. Therefore she always seeks out and even believes propaganda.

Wall Street Journal Editorial Board Tries to End Trump’s Political Career in Searing Op-Ed: Capitol Attack ‘Will Mar His Legacy for All Time’

The Wall Street Journal editorial board wrote a blistering column on Sunday, arguing that although the Senate voted to acquit, Donald Trump, “he won’t win another national election.”

More nutty hyperbole from TDS sufferer SECONDRATE.

Yanno, SECONDRATE, if you would stop injecting blatant nonsense into your posts we might even have a reasonable discussion.

In the case of Aaron Burr killing Alexander Hamilton, you and Burr's lawyer could argue that although illegal, it was a duel that Hamilton voluntarily agreed to fight. The legal system in New Jersey was sympathetic to that argument because Hamilton died in New York. On the other hand, New York's legal system felt that it could not try Burr because the duel was held in New Jersey. Signym, can you understand that neither state wished to apply its laws to Burr for killing Hamilton?

The legal argument was that only if Hamilton had been shot and died in New York would New York have gone to trial. Across the Hudson River, New Jersey was making a mirror image of that same argument. Only if Hamilton had been shot and died in New Jersey would New Jersey have gone to trial. In a similar facetious legal argument, Mitch McConnell and 42 other GOP Senators said they would have convicted Trump for inciting an insurrection that killed 7 people but could not because the trial ended after Jan 20th. If only the trial finished a little sooner but Mitch sorrowfully said he could not convict because that date had passed. Read what Mitch said:

“January 6th was a disgrace.

“American citizens attacked their own government. They used terrorism to try to stop a specific piece of democratic business they did not like.

“Fellow Americans beat and bloodied our own police. They stormed the Senate floor. They tried to hunt down the Speaker of the House. They built a gallows and chanted about murdering the Vice President.

“They did this because they had been fed wild falsehoods by the most powerful man on Earth — because he was angry he’d lost an election.

“Former President Trump’s actions preceding the riot were a disgraceful dereliction of duty.

Then McConnell says he can't convict Trump for insurrection because he feels it is unconstitutional after January 20th to even hold a trial. Trump's lawyers said so and that was good enough for McConnell who saw no reason why Trump's lawyers would lie. It just so happens that there are no lawyers but Trump's shysters who will place their reputations at risk for the idea that it's unconstitutional. A previous set of 5 lawyers working for Trump quit a week before the trial because that argument was stupid and embarrassing, but not stupid enough to stop Signym or Trump.

Read McConnell's "reasons" at https://www.mcconnell.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/pressreleases?ID=2ED

Despite Senate acquittal, Trump’s legal troubles over Capitol insurrection are not over. Trump could still face charges for inciting riot.

In 1992, four years after launching his nationally syndicated show, Limbaugh signed a new contract that tied his compensation to his show’s profits, predicting that he could earn as much as $5 million in 1993, according to Colford—who also reported that Limbaugh snagged a $2.5 million advance for See, I Told You So. These sums were a pittance compared to the eight-figure yearly salaries he would soon come to command. At the time, though, Limbaugh was setting new standards for what a political talker could earn. And plenty of other people decided that they wanted a piece of the action.

“I’m not sure where the business is going,” Bill O’Reilly, then co-host of the television program Inside Edition, said in 1993. “But my gut says it’s going in the direction of Rush, and, man, I’m going to be there.” That same year, at the beginning of See, I Told You So, Limbaugh extended “deep gratitude to my friend Roger Ailes,” who within three years would create his own cable television network of conservative talkers based on Limbaugh’s rhetorical model. Fox News offered talk-radio-grade punditry dressed up with the residual veneer of objectivity that viewers still associated with TV news. The network assembled a stable of commentators who also were eager to grow famous and get rich by ceaselessly calling attention to the purported outrages committed by the left and the liberal media.

Limbaugh and his peers did not invent the demand for these programs. As the ensuing ratings showed, plenty of Americans already had a real appetite for this sort of febrile whining. But Limbaugh and the rest did all they could to nurture and cultivate those audiences, in part by attempting to poison them against all other sources of media—which, after all, were exclusively populated and controlled by a bunch of dirty liberal liars. Soon, the goal became not just to resist the mainstream media, but to provide an entirely separate epistemic system from the mainstream media.

“The left has been very successful because it understands the importance of the culture—of framing the debate and influencing the way people think about problems. But the Culture War is a bilateral conflict, my friends,” Limbaugh wrote. “There’s no reason on earth we should be content to sit back and watch our values and our cultural heritage slip away. Why don’t we simply get in the game and start competing for control of those key cultural institutions? In other words, why not fight back?”

Religious and condemnatory by its very nature, the culture wars were designed to make voting for anyone with a “D” next to their name a sin.

Limbaugh didn’t just fight back; he devised the battle plan. Even after he won—conservative punditry, across all platforms, generally reaches a far wider and more avid audience than its liberal opposite—he kept fighting back, because oppositional thinking was central to his appeal. But it’s hard to portray yourself as an aggrieved and marginalized voice when you’re worth hundreds of millions of dollars, when you’ve already gotten everything you’ve ever wanted.

Tim's biggest problem is that he talks for 30 minutes but only says 3 minutes of stuff. You couldn't pay me to watch him anymore, which is quite funny since he begs for money in the first few minutes of every video.

He's not a Republican though. His podcast regularly has his liberal friends on it along with other guests.

But in the last few years, everybody who doesn't just mindlessly chug down Rachel Maddow's cum is considered a Republican by the severely agitated and somewhat insane Lefties on the internet.

Texas Republicans Ran a Twenty-Year Experiment. The Results Are In.
The state’s energy crisis didn’t come out of nowhere: it took decades of deregulation to make it happen.

In the early 2000s, after gaining control of the Texas House of Representatives for the first time in modern history, Republicans undertook a gerrymandering scheme that solidified their control of the state even further. What followed was a multi-decade experiment in deregulation that has now left millions of Texas residents freezing and without power.

Ted Cruz ABANDONS Dog Snowflake for Cancun while AOC raises MILLIONS for Texas Charities

Ted Cruz and Wife Heidi Cruz abandoned their dog Snowflake for their Ritz Carlton Cancun Mexico Trip. Ted Cruz also lied about this on Fox News. While all this was happening, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) raised money for charities in Texas, and Beto O'Rourke made nearly a million phone calls to seniors in Texas to ensure they got help. This proves that if Ted Cruz stayed home and did more to help, he could have made this crisis easier for the Texans he represents as Senator.

The Way Out of America’s Zero-Sum Thinking on Race and Wealth

The evidence shows we all lose when society’s overwhelmed by white resentment and win when we organize across our differences.

Ms. McGhee is the author of “The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together,” from which this essay is adapted. Download the free book at

Feb. 13, 2021 https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/13/opinion/race-economy-inequality-civ
il-rights.html
\

Over a two-decade career in the white-collar think tank world, I’ve continually wondered: Why can’t we have nice things?

By “we,” I mean America at-large. As for “nice things,” I don’t picture self-driving cars, hovercraft backpacks or laundry that does itself. Instead, I mean the basic aspects of a high-functioning society: well-funded schools, reliable infrastructure, wages that keep workers out of poverty, or a comprehensive public health system equipped to handle pandemics — things that equally developed but less wealthy nations seem to have.

In 2010, eight years into my time as an economic policy wonk at Demos, a progressive policy research group, budget deficits were on the rise. The Great Recession had decimated tax revenue, requiring more public spending to restart the economy.

But both the Tea Party and many in President Barack Obama’s inner circle were calling for a “grand bargain” to shrink the size of government by capping future public outlays and slashing Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare. Despite the still-fragile recovery and evidence that corporations were already paring back retirement benefits and ratcheting down real wages, the idea gained steam.

On a call with a group of all-white economist colleagues, we discussed how to advise leaders in Washington against this disastrous retrenchment. I cleared my throat and asked: “So where should we make the point that all these programs were created without concern for their cost when the goal was to build a white middle class, and they paid for themselves in economic growth? Now these guys are trying to fundamentally renege on the deal for a future middle class that would be majority people of color?”

Nobody answered. I checked to see if I was muted.

Finally, one of the economists breached the awkward silence. “Well, sure, Heather. We know that — and you know that — but let’s not lead with our chin here,” he said. “We are trying to be persuasive.”

The sad truth is that he was probably right. Soon, the Tea Party movement, harnessing the language of fiscal responsibility and the subtext of white grievance, would shut down the federal government, win across-the-board cuts to public programs and essentially halt the legislative function of the federal government for the next six years. The result: A jobless recovery followed by a slow, unequal economic expansion that hurt Americans of all backgrounds.

The anti-government stinginess of traditional conservatism, along with the fear of losing social status held by many white people, now broadly associated with Trumpism, have long been connected. Both have sapped American society’s strength for generations, causing a majority of white Americans to rally behind the draining of public resources and investments. Those very investments would provide white Americans — the largest group of the impoverished and uninsured — greater security, too: A new Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco study calculated that in 2019, the country’s output would have been $2.6 trillion greater if the gap between white men and everyone else were closed. And a 2020 report from analysts at Citigroup calculated that if America had adopted policies to close the Black-white economic gap 20 years ago, U.S. G.D.P would be an estimated $16 trillion higher.

To understand what stops us from uniting for our mutual benefit, I’ve spent the past three years traveling the country from California to Mississippi to Maine, visiting churches and worker centers and city halls, in search of on-the-ground answers.

In Montgomery, Ala., I walked the grounds of what was once a grand public pool, one of more than 2,000 such pools built in the early 20th century. However, much like the era’s government-backed suburban developments or G.I. Bill home loans, the pool was for whites only. Threatened with court action to integrate its pool in 1958, the town drained it instead, shuttering the entire parks and recreation department. Even after reopening the parks a decade later, they never rebuilt the pool. Towns from Ohio to Louisiana lashed out in similar ways.

The civil rights movement, which widened the circle of public beneficiaries and could have heralded a more moral, prosperous nation, wound up diminishing white people’s commitment to the very idea of public goods. In the late 1950s, over two-thirds of white Americans agreed with the now-radical idea that the government ought to guarantee a job for anyone who wants one and ensure a minimum standard of living for everyone in the country. White support for those ideas nose-dived from around 70 to 35 percent from 1960 to 1964, and has remained low ever since.

It’s no historical accident that this dip coincided with the 1963 March on Washington, when white Americans saw Black activists demanding the same economic guarantees, and when Democrats began to promise to extend government benefits across the color line. It’s also no accident that, to this day, no Democratic presidential candidate has won the white vote since the Democrat Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts.

Racial integration portended the end of America’s high-tax, high-investment growth strategy: Tax revenue peaked as a percentage of the economy in 1969 compared with the average O.E.C.D. country. Now, America’s per capita government spending is near the bottom among industrialized countries. Our roads, bridges and water systems get a D+ from the American Society of Civil Engineers. Unlike our peers, we don’t have high-speed rail, universal broadband, mandatory paid family leave or universal child care.

And while growing corporate power and money in politics have certainly played a role, it’s now clear that racial resentment is the key uncredited actor in our economic backslide. White people who exhibit low racial resentment against Black people are 60 percentage points more likely to support increased government spending than are those with high racial resentment. At the base of this resentment is a zero-sum story: the default framework for conservative arguments, rife with references to “makers and takers,” “taxpayers and freeloaders.”

In my travels, I also realized that those seeking to repair America’s social divides can invoke this sort of zero-sum framing as well. Progressives often end up talking about race relations through a prism of competition — every advantage for whites, mirrored by a disadvantage for people of color.

In my research and writing on disparities, I learned to focus on how white people benefited from systemic racism: Their schools have more funding, they have less contact with the police, they have greater access to health care. These hallmarks of white privilege are not freedoms that racial justice activists want to take away from white people, however — they’re basic human rights and dignities that everyone should enjoy. And the right wing is eager to fill the gap when we don’t finish the sentence.

For an entire generation of American politics, racist stereotypes and dog whistles have strengthened the hand that beat progressives in the fight against rising inequality. But did white people win? No: Many of them lost good jobs, benefits and social mobility along with the rest of us not born into wealth.

The task ahead, then, is to unwind this idea of a fixed quantity of prosperity and replace it with what I’ve come to call Solidarity Dividends: gains available to everyone when they unite across racial lines, in the form of higher wages, cleaner air and better-funded schools.

I’ll never forget Bridget, a white woman I met in Kansas City who had worked in fast food for over a decade. When a co-worker at Wendy’s first approached her about joining a local Fight for $15 group pushing for a livable minimum wage, she was skeptical. “I didn’t think that things in my life would ever change,” she told me. “They weren’t going to give $15 to a fast food worker. That was just insane to me.”

But Bridget attended the first organizing meeting anyway. And when a Latina woman rose and described her life — three children in a two-bedroom apartment with bad plumbing, the feeling of being “trapped in a life where she didn’t have any opportunity to do anything better” — Bridget, also a mother of three, said she was struck by how “I was really able to see myself in her.”

“I had been fed this whole line of, ‘These immigrant workers are coming over here and stealing our jobs — not paying taxes, committing crimes and causing problems,’” Bridget admitted. “You know, us against them.”

Soon after she began organizing, the cross-racial movement had won a convert. “In order for all of us to come up, it’s not a matter of me coming up and them staying down,” she said. “It’s the matter of: In order for me to come up, they have to come up too. Because honestly, as long as we’re divided, we’re conquered.”

The conservative mindset can be counted on to prioritize private interests over public ones. In a Republican utopia, the rich are noble and deserving of basic necessities, comforts, and life itself. If they have rigged the system to benefit themselves, it means they are smart, not conniving. In the future that Republicans promise, “Only the strong will survive and the weak will parish (sic),” as per Boyd’s post. In other words, our lives are expendable, and if we die, it is because we deserve it and were simply not smart enough to survive.

This was utterly predictable. Republicans have used this same approach on health care—think of all the Republican governors who backed lawsuits against the Affordable Care Act and opted their states out of the federal government’s Medicaid program even though a majority of Americans support Obamacare. Even more Americans support the government nationalizing health care, but Republicans warn that if the program is expanded from Medicare for those over 65 to all Americans, it will suddenly become “socialism” and thus “evil.” Their solution for health care is the status quo of a deregulated “Wild West” private insurance market.

Republicans have offered a similar approach to the coronavirus pandemic where any public safety standards set by the government are anathema to “personal freedoms,” even though a majority of Americans support such precautions. It is also how Republicans have approached poverty and rising inequality: by opposing a federal government increase to the minimum wage even though most Americans want a floor of $15 an hour.

Interestingly, Republicans believe strongly in the idea of “big government” when it comes to regulating their pet social issues such as harsh anti-immigrant measures and attacks on abortion. (Meanwhile, most Americans support a pathway to legalization for the undocumented and a majority supports reproductive choice.)

As Americans are subject to the brutal impacts of inevitable climate change, we face a clear choice: strong government intervention to save our lives, or a “survival of the fittest” dystopia that contemporary conservatism promises. The Texas debacle is a preview of what is to come if the free-marketeers have their way while the climate changes. The nation’s conservative party went from insisting that climate change does not exist (it is a “hoax!”) to shrugging their shoulders and telling us, as Boyd did, that we’re on our own when the consequences hit.

In some sense, it’s not surprising that the Texas infrastructure would buckle under weather stresses. The central problem is that our elected leaders have shown zero indication of understanding the urgent need, for Texas’ economic viability, to do whatever it takes to make sure nothing like this ever happens again. Ted Cruz, as everyone now knows, left for Cancun; the mayor of Colorado City angrily told everyone to fend for themselves (and then resigned); and Governor Abbott has been blaming frozen wind turbines, a tiny percentage of the problem (frozen gas pipes are a much bigger issue) but one that plays with the base. The bare minimum of a sane response might be, I dunno :

>> acknowledging the reality that climate change means that “once-per-century” weather events will be every couple years from now on,

>> building spare capacity (nuclear would be ideal … well, I can dream),

>> winterizing what we have now, and

>> connecting the Texas grid to the rest of the US.

If I were a Texas Democratic politician, I’d consider making Republican incompetence on infrastructure, utilities, and public health my only campaign issues.

https://www.scottaaronson.com/blog/?p=5347

“Whether it’s hot or cold, the weather’s changing. In my mind you need to be prepared for the worst of anything,” said Larry Weiss, the former CEO of the municipal utility Austin Energy, who now consults for utilities around the country. “There needs to be some (political/regulatory) incentive for power plants to stay on and be available. Right now it’s a free market in Texas, and you dispatch when you want to. If you freeze up, you just say, ‘Sorry.’”

In Texas, it is perfectly legal to let your customers freeze in the dark and die. It's mandatory to let them freeze for a pure capitalist seeking the highest profits from electricity. If nobody dies, you aren't squeezing your customers hard enough to make the most money.

That's not how pattern recognition works, dude.

You can't make this statement after something happened one time. Honestly, you couldn't even make that statement if it happened twice in 5 years, since there isn't enough data to make the statement yet.

Get back to me after the third event within the next 20 years on this one.

I won't argue that there's no excuse to not make proper preparations to avoid this in the future though. Especially since there is so much damage already and the large amount of things that need to be replaced anyway.

There's no arguing the last month of our winter sucked all the way up here, but at least we're prepared for it since winter typically sucks here. Even though this one was the worst on record since the early 80's, we had the infrastructure to deal with it promptly.

I can't imagine what it would be like to be so cold in your house that going outside of your house is warmer, and not being able to go to a neighbor's house because they're in the same boat. Especially if you couldn't get in your car and drive anywhere because there isn't a goddamned snow plow for the streets in the entire state.

That being said, I would suggest that everybody do their own part to protect themselves in the future. Invest in a generator, and service it regularly. You will likely almost never use it, but when you need to it's the most valuable tool you'll ever own.

Also keep a good amount of gasoline on hand and rotate the stock every once in a while so you know it's going to serve you when you need it. Throw a bit of Stabil in it too.

There is a pattern that goes back decades. It is that Texas Republican politicians don't force corporations to follow the law.

In 2020, Gov. Greg Abbott’s hand-picked utility regulators decided they no longer wanted to work with a nonprofit organization they had hired to enforce the state’s electric reliability standards. The multiyear contract between the Public Utility Commission and the monitoring organization, the Texas Reliability Entity, was trashed. The state agency overseeing the power industry operated without an independent monitor to make sure energy companies followed state protocols, which include weatherization guidelines.

On Thursday, Abbott called for a state law requiring power plants to be better weatherized. Yet over the past quarter-century, state leaders have refused to require the companies to prepare for severe weather, even as once-in-a-lifetime storms have arrived with increasing frequency.

Critics say the utility commission’s move to strip away a regulatory layer, especially with potentially severe weather approaching, was just the latest example of the consistently light touch Texas politicians have used to oversee the complex industry that generates and distributes power.

WELL, there have been "once in a hundred years" events happening all over the USA... a couple of "once in a hundred years" north midwestern floods happening back-to-back, "once in hundred years" (actually, once in six hundred years) drought in CA, never- before seen numbers of Cat5 hurricanes etc. And if you look at Arctic warming, permafrost is melting and exposing many-thousand-year-old artefacts and carcasses and causing never before seen blowholes of methane. Also, glacial melting is at never before seen extent, threatening major water supplies and exposing many-thousand year old carcasses.

If you have ever been the boss of a business where it is extremely important that it not fail because failure would cause a disaster to not just the business but to everyone within the blast radius of your failed business, you would know that Republican employees cause failure, mostly because of the peculiar way their little minds work. The Republican governor of Texas has some very peculiar ideas in his head about electricity generation and many other things, as do Republican legislators and voters. Here is a peculiar idea which I sincerely hope becomes reality:

Poll: Almost Half of Republicans Would Drop GOP, Join Trump Party

PLEASE DO! Instead of two major parties, there would be one major and two new minor third parties competing with the Green Party, Libertarians and Other.

Nearly half of Republicans wouldn’t hesitate to drop the GOP and join a new party led by former President Donald Trump, according to a Suffolk University/USA Today poll of Trump voters released Sunday. The poll revealed that 46 percent said they would abandon their party while only 27 percent said they wouldn’t drop the GOP. The rest are undecided. Half of the Trump voters polled said that the GOP should be “more loyal to Trump.” Only 19 percent said the opposite and think the Republican Party should be less loyal to Trump. “We feel like Republicans don’t fight enough for us, and we all see Donald Trump fighting for us as hard as he can, every single day,” a small-business owner from Milwaukee said.

The poll showed that Trump voters are far more loyal to the former president than to the Republican Party. While 54 percent of those polled said they were loyal to Trump, only 34 percent said they were loyal to the party. The figures put into sharp focus the dilemma that Republican leaders are facing as they try to adjust to a post-Trump world.

USA Today and Suffolk University conducted a survey of 1,000 Trump voters, identified via 2020 polls, in the past week. The results reaffirm that lies are now part of the bedrock of the Republican Party. Riot denialism, for example:

"Most Trump voters embrace a version of events on Jan. 6 that has been debunked by independent fact checkers and law enforcement agencies," USA Today's Susan Page wrote Sunday. "Asked to describe what happened during the assault on the Capitol, 58% of Trump voters call it 'mostly an antifa-inspired attack that only involved a few Trump supporters.' That's more than double the 28% who call it 'a rally of Trump supporters, some of whom attacked the Capitol.' Four percent call it 'an attempted coup inspired by President Trump.'"

The day of MAGA terror at the Capitol has been flushed down the memory hole by Trump's base.

(CNN)The January 6 riot on the US Capitol was a cataclysm -- incited by a President willing to lie for political gain and a political party willing to accommodate him out of fear of political retribution.

Nothing, apparently, has changed.

Witness Rep. Steve Scalise (Louisiana) during an appearance on ABC's "This Week" hosted by Jon Karl:
Karl: But -- but, wait a minute, I mean, [Donald Trump] hasn't taken responsibility. You heard Kevin McCarthy say -- I mean, do you agree with what Kevin McCarthy said there, that the President must take responsibility, that the facts demand that he take responsibility for what happened on January 6?

Scalise: Well, first of all -- now, I wrote a Wall Street Journal editorial about where I think the responsibility lays for January 6. And surely, there's a lot of blame to go around.
But at the end of the day, the people who stormed the Capitol on January 6, it was a disgrace. And they need to be held accountable. And in fact, over 180 have already been arrested. And I know the FBI's working to root out every person who broke into the Capitol, who attacked police. There's no place for that.

Um, "surely there's a lot of blame to go around?"

Well, yes, there is. Trump, his enablers in Congress, conservative talk radio and TV, political professionals who seized on the stolen election lie to line their own pockets.....
But I don't think that's what Scalise means. In fact, he appears to be engaged in a "both-siderism" argument, the idea that bad people from all over the political spectrum were responsible for the damage done to the Capitol and the country on January 6.
In fact, as the interview wore on, Scalise went further down the "whataboutism" road.

"When you look at -- look, Donald Trump has denounced what happened, and I think everybody should have been unequivocal in their denouncing of what happened, not only on January 6 but during the summer, when they were burning down cities, shooting cops, beating people in the streets," he told Karl. "You -- you saw ... the left denouncing January 6, as we did. They didn't denounce what happened during the summer."

Worth noting here: While there was some violence at protests over racial in equity during the summer of 2020 it was a) not widespread and b) not an assault on the US Capitol while the vice president of the United States and members of Congress were inside it.

Also worth noting: Trump never denounced the violence on January 6. Quite the opposite.

"We love you. You're very special," Trump told rioters on that day.
Asked by Karl whether Joe Biden was the "legitimate" president, Scalise said this: "Look, Joe Biden's the president. There were a few states that did not follow their state laws. That's really the dispute that you've seen continue on."
Which isn't a simple "yes."

What Scalise's interview shows is that the internal politics of the House GOP conference -- and the party's broader base -- simply leave no room for anyone to cross Trump. Still. Regardless of whether Scalise believes what he says about the election and the January 6 riot, he feels compelled to say those things because he knows that if he doesn't toe the line, he can expect a leadership challenge, a censure from his state party and a likely primary challenge next year.
That fear of reprisal means that the GOP is still Donald Trump's party, and will be until its elected leaders start putting principle over political calculation.

Truth, Lies and Pragmatism by Chris Horner

"I won that election" — Donald J Trump

"The truth is out there" — X files

There is a story that Clemenceau, the Prime Minister of France, was in conversation with some German representatives during the Paris peace negations in 1919 that led to the Treaty of Versailles. One of the Germans said something to the effect that in a hundred years time historians would wonder what had really been the cause of the Great War and who had been really responsible. Clemenceau, so the story goes, retorted that one thing was certain: ‘the historians will not say that Belgium invaded Germany’.

The anecdote repays some reflection. On the one hand, its main point seems clear: the brute fact that it was Germany that invaded Belgium and not the other way around cannot be wished away by later historians, whatever else they may say. Clemenceau, of course, is pointing to this as the evidence for the German responsibility for starting the war. On the other hand, the German representative also seems to be right: historians have been discussing the causes and the responsibility for World War One ever since 1914, and show no signs of concluding. The assessment of an event like that depends on interpretation and the sifting of evidence. It isn’t just a matter of pointing what happened on an August day in 1914. Yet some things remain stubbornly the case, we think: German troops violated Belgian neutrality in 1914.

In a hundred years time will historians wonder who won the US Presidential Election of 2020? Perhaps not, but the world we live in seems to be one in which the most ‘stubborn’ facts are in question. Much of the confusion can be wrought by bad faith actors, people who know they are lying when they claim certain things to be true. These bad faith actors aren’t just figures from the margins of the political spectrum, or among the deluded ‘QAnon’ conspiracy enthusiasts. In our time we have seen the US and UK governments, supported by the bulk of the established media outlets repeat falsehoods about the possession of WMDs in Iraq, to give just one example.

Fake mail-in election was fake.

Abolish mail-in ballots, and remove the ability to file an absentee ballot for anybody who isn't in the military and serving outside of the country on Election Day.

Election Day, singular. Not Election Days. Not Election Week. Not Election Month.

Photo ID enforced voting. Provide every American Citizen who is on food stamps, energy assistance, or who has children on the free school lunch program with a driver's license (if they are legal to drive) or a State ID free of charge.

Until those happen, no election is valid and it's all a joke.

Yup. Falsehoods like Biden* won the election and half a million Americans died of Covid.
