The Conservatives Dreading — And Preparing for — Civil War

A faction of the right believes America has been riven into two countries. The Claremont Institute is building the intellectual architecture for whatever comes next. (Coup d'état is the next step)

“Let me start big. The mission of the Claremont Institute is to save Western civilization,” says Ryan Williams, the organization’s president, looking at the camera, in a crisp navy suit. “We’ve always aimed high.” A trumpet blares. America’s founding documents flash across the screen. Welcome to the intellectual home of America’s Trumpist right.

As Donald Trump rose to power, the Claremont universe—which sponsors fellowships and publications, including the Claremont Review of Books and The American Mind—rose with him, publishing essays that seemed to capture why the president appealed to so many Americans and attempting to map a political philosophy onto his presidency. Williams and his cohort are on a mission to tear down and remake the right; they believe that America has been riven into two fundamentally different countries, not least because of the rise of secularism. “The Founders were pretty unanimous, with Washington leading the way, that the Constitution is really only fit for a Christian people,” Williams told me. It’s possible that violence lies ahead. “I worry about such a conflict,” Williams told me. “The Civil War was terrible. It should be the thing we try to avoid almost at all costs.” He is totally insincere about 'avoid almost at all costs' because next he says:

“The ideal endgame would be to effect a realignment of our politics and take control of all three branches of government for a generation or two,” Williams said.

I think you're overstating half of that story.

So . . . you are ready to go violent on the Democrats. Remember the heaps of praise you gave to the movie Joker? Murder as purifying fire for your soul?

Nah, bruh.

Just giving you an invitation to throw the first stone is all, although I would highly recommend against doing it.

There is zero dread or concern on my end if that's how you want to play the game going forward.

Your move.

In the movie clip from Joker, Murray had invited Joker to be on TV. From Joker's viewpoint, Murray was to blame for Joker killing Murray, but from the viewpoint of Batman, Joker was to blame. In a real world example, one that you gave an opinion on, from the viewpoint of Kyle Rittenhouse, the BLM protestors were to blame for Rittenhouse killing them, a defense Rittenhouse's lawyers will be using. Trump voters have the same viewpoint as Rittenhouse. Another real world example: the Confederate slave-owners blamed Lincoln for the Civil War, even after the war was lost and Lincoln was killed. History decided that slave-owners, not Lincoln, were to blame, but 6ixStringJack made snide remarks about Lincoln. Trump and his voters have taken sides on Confederate monuments glorifying the slave-owners.

You wrote dozens of long comments, even essays, about Joker before it arrived and after, but now you've got amnesia. That is a very odd loss of memory. Trump does the same thing when he is under oath and giving a deposition. So many things he can't recall when asked by a lawyer, but after court reporters stop taking down consequential words, his memory is perfect.

No. I didn't. You'll find I rarely even talked about any plot points to the movie after the initial few posts with Rappy and SGG.

Most of those dozens of posts you talk about were just rubbing it in that Joker was destroying whatever shit Star Wars flick Disney churned out at the same time, and week to week graphs chronicling the destruction.

You've posted a great magnitude more about actual plot points of the movie Joker all over these boards than I ever did.

Why are you such a hypocrite, liar and completely lacking in any self-awareness?

You have some serious problems.

Now you're copying Trump. He has done this a million times: "I'm not lying; You're the lying Fake News." But he is lying and 6ix is lying about the movie Joker because 6ix has contemplated violence, same as Joker, who felt as "oppressed" as 6ix, but Joker went ahead and killed his "oppressors". 6ix keeps hinting he will get around to killing his "oppressors" the Democrats because the Democrats are begging to be killed by 6ix, just as Lincoln was to blame for the Civil War killings done by slave-owners (per Confederate President Jefferson Davis' History of the Civil War), just as the BLM movement was to blame for Kyle Rittenhouse killing BLM protestors. Maybe Rittenhouse's defense attorneys can sell those lies to a jury, but in the meantime, Rittenhouse is truly free on bond and his victims are scientifically proven to be dead.

Show me then, bitch.

Not only didn't I talk much about the plot of the movie, but you're going to be pretty fucking hard pressed to even find any posts of me doing so. My posts before I just went to trolling Disney by showing weekly graphs on how Star Wars was being destroyed by Joker were praise for the film and the emotions it evoked as well as the stellar performance by Phoenix.

I doubt very much you'll even find posts where I went in-depth on any particular scene, and I guaranty you that you'll never dig up a post where I called Joker a hero or even hinted at a shred of admiration for the character that Phoenix portrayed.

You're a piece of shit liar, and I'm calling you out for attempting and failing to project your extremely violent (and heavily archived) tenancies on me.

Since 2000, voters have opted for 12 years of Republican presidents and 12 years of Democratic presidents. The Senate is currently split 50-50, and the House is on a knife edge. The federal judiciary outside the Supreme Court is almost exactly 50% Democratic and 50% Republican. Presidents are routinely elected by margins of a few percentage points.

We have been a 50-50 nation since at least 2000, and we still are. Conservatives have hung on to their half thanks to Fox News giving them a steady boost of a few percentage points based on fearmongering and white backlash. At the same time, liberals haven't really tried to build a bigger majority, instead experimenting with pushing the progressive envelope as far as they can without falling too far below 50%.

Eventually something will give and one side or the other will win a solid advantage for a decade or two. Or so I assume. But when?

Do you remember the days of the Simpson-Bowles debt-reduction plan? A decade ago elite opinion was obsessed with the supposed need for immediate action on budget deficits. This consensus among what I used to call Very Serious People was so strong that as Ezra Klein, now a Times Opinion writer, wrote, deficits somehow became an issue to which “the rules of reportorial neutrality don’t apply.” The news media more or less openly rooted not just for deficit reduction in general, but in particular for “entitlement reform,” a.k.a. cuts in future Medicare and Social Security benefits. Such cuts, everyone who mattered seemed to argue, were essential to secure the nation’s future.

They weren’t. But here’s my question: If elite opinion cares so much about the future, why isn’t there any comparable consensus now about the need for climate action and spending on children? These are two of the main components of President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda, and the case for both is much stronger than the case for entitlement cuts ever was.

Yet whereas calling for Social Security cuts used to be treated as a sort of political badge of seriousness, calling for urgent action on climate and children isn’t. If anything, much reporting on current politics seems to suggest that the handful of Democrats trying to dismantle Build Back Better, to limit the Biden agenda to modest spending on conventional infrastructure, are being responsible, while the progressives trying to make sure that we really do invest in the nation’s future are somehow unserious.

That should tell you something.

It wasn’t just that there was segregation, or that the KKK terrorized, or even that lynchings were a frequent event. White supremacy was absolutely baked into the very structure of everyday life. The local and state police were enforcers. To register to vote required passing literacy and citizenship tests which were virtually unpassable for African-Americans. Even counties with an overwhelmingly black population had nearly no registered black voters. And many of the people in these counties lived in grinding poverty, earning only a few dollars a day farming or doing manual labor.

In such a few words you did a very nice job summarizing what is wrong with the "thinking" of Trump voters. You guys are the epitome of "When in danger or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout." No surprise that Trump attracted you. He spent his entire life that same way.

For ten years I listened to guys say that not stopping Communism in Southeast Asia would cause America to collapse. Those were angry, and deeply frightened men. But one month in Vietnam proved to me those guys (who would evolve into Trumptards) were panicky namby pambies. 6ix, you're no different. Everything scares you guys, sending you running in circles, screaming and shouting. If it is not foreigners on the border, it's terrorists terrorizing you little cowards, or it's crime making you cry. If not that, you're worried about your tiny little bank account and your crappy bungalow and losing your worthless job to China or illegal aliens. Scared and worried all the time, but with no ideas about what to do other than vote for Trump. So sad but Trump is as clueless as you about what to do to make you feel less fearful.

You make Americans look weak, silly, and frightened. But fortunately for your bloated self-esteem, you and run-of-the-mill Trumptards and Trump himself can't stop bragging about qualities you wish you had, but you lack. Who are kidding, other than yourself? Are you expecting a participation award, like some little kid because you vote for the candidate most like yourself: lying-sack-of-shit Donald Trump? Trump is materially good for me. I look forward to his next term in the White House and new tax-cuts for people like me and Trump. I'll get real monetary awards and you'll get participation awards for being a scared child who never grew up.

{Sarcasm On} Donald Trump, hero of the rule of law in Election 2020

Brit Hume cries foul:

This story never explains why the plan these officials threatened to resign over did not go forward. The answer is that Trump decided against it. It is not to his credit that he even considered it, but his rejection should be part of any story on it. https://t.co/omyOSJbkhu

— Brit Hume (@brithume) October 7, 2021 {/Sarcasm Off} Brit Hume is an infamous apologist for Trump on Fox News, so unsurprisingly the story he tells is FAKE:

THE REAL STORY:

[On January 3] then-acting attorney general Jeffrey Rosen, his deputy Richard Donoghue, and a few other administration officials met in the Oval Office for a final confrontation on Trump’s plan to replace Rosen with Jeffrey Clark, a little-known Justice Department official who had indicated he would publicly pursue Trump’s false claims of mass voter fraud.

....For three hours, the officials then debated Trump’s plan, and the insistence by Rosen and others that they would resign rather than go along with it.

During the meeting, Donoghue and another Justice Department official made clear that all of the Justice Department’s assistant attorneys general “would resign if Trump replaced Rosen with Clark,” the report says. “Donoghue added that the mass resignations likely would not end there, and that U.S. Attorneys and other DOJ officials might also resign en masse.”

....A key issue in the meeting was a letter that Clark and Trump wanted the Justice Department to send to Georgia officials warning of “irregularities” in voting....The Senate report says opposition to the idea came not only from the Justice Department but from the top White House lawyer, Pat Cipollone, who made clear that he and his deputy also would quit if Trump went through with his plan.

Yes, Trump "decided" against it after spending three hours trying to strong-arm the Justice Department into publicly lying about mass voter fraud. In the end, he "decided" against it only after the entire top level of the Justice Department threatened to publicly resign and were joined by Trump's own White House counsel.

That Trump. He's is quite the hero of the rule of law, isn't he?

Constitutional Reforms Come in Waves. We May Be Approaching One Now.

In U.S. history, previous periods of gridlock and partisanship eventually gave way to bursts of constitutional amendments. Periods of extreme political polarization, when the normal channels of legal change are blocked off due to partisan gridlock and regional divides, can usher in periods of constitutional reform to get the political system functioning again.

Our national charter has been reformed — and its principles renewed — in four waves of constitutional change that occurred during the most turbulent times in American history.

1) The first was from 1789 to 1804, when the founding generation added a dozen amendments in a 15-year period. Chief among them was the Bill of Rights, the first 10 amendments, adopted in a single bundle to reassure skeptics that a strong national government could be tempered with respect for individual liberty. They also adopted the 11th and 12th Amendments that, respectively, limited citizens’ lawsuits against states and fixed some defects in the Electoral College.

2) Then all was quiet on the constitutional front for 61 years, until after the Civil War. Between 1865 and 1870, Republican lawmakers used six years of supermajority control of Congress to drive a second era of amendments that abolished slavery, promised equal citizenship for 4 million newly freed African Americans and barred racial discrimination in voting. Taken together, these amendments laid a “second founding” for a nation sundered by war. They gave Congress robust new powers to remedy racial injustice while imposing meaningful limits on the excesses of state governments.

3) And then there was another four decades of polarization and gridlock, marked by the pervasive corruption and vast inequities of the Gilded Age. Eventually, the political pendulum swung and brought a progressive political coalition to power. At the prodding of social movements from the populists to the suffragists to the temperance warriors, lawmakers sought to reverse the extravagance of the previous era. Between 1909 and 1920, Progressive Era reformers added four amendments that authorized the income tax, provided for the popular election of senators, launched Prohibition and extended the franchise to women. The spectacular failure of the nationwide liquor ban notwithstanding (the 21st amendment repealed Prohibition in 1933), these amendments established the foundation for the modern U.S. government.

4) Finally, a fourth wave, inspired by the political activism of the 1960s’ civil rights era, added three voting rights amendments to the Constitution: presidential electors for the District of Columbia, abolition of the poll tax, and the lowering of the voting age to 18. A fourth amendment, the 25th, updated and clarified the rules of presidential and vice presidential succession amid the doomsday fears of the nuclear age. The last of this wave was the 26th Amendment, the voting age measure, ratified in 1971.

Today, we find ourselves five decades into the latest dry spell. After the defeat of the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1980s, many progressives concluded that the Constitution’s arduous amending process is not worth the effort. For their part, conservative activists have launched campaigns to win a balanced budget amendment and other ideological policies, which has only bolstered a sense among many that it’s unwise and even dangerous to tinker with the framers’ handiwork.

But this sense of defeatism is not new. In 1904, the Washington Post dismissed reformers’ “amendatory schemes,” offering the hard-boiled take that “our fundamental law is practically unamendable by peaceful and regular methods.” And yet, just a half-decade later, that pessimistic prognosis was proven wrong when Congress proposed the first of the Progressive Era amendments.

The presence of certain factors that have prompted past generations of Americans to push for constitutional amendments suggests that a new wave may already be building. Discontent over controversial Supreme Court rulings, for instance, has proven to be a predictable galvanizer of amending activity in previous eras. In fact, seven amendments were motivated by the desire to reverse high court decisions. Today the amendment option is on the table for activists working to overrule Supreme Court decisions such as Citizens United, which has allowed corporations and outside groups to spend unlimited amounts of money on campaigns.

Since Trump stopped paying his income taxes, he should make it official by revising the Constitution and repealing the 16th Amendment -- Income Tax

Passed by Congress July 2, 1909. Ratified February 3, 1913. The 16th Amendment changed a portion of Article I, Section 9

The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.

The top 1% followed Trump's example and stopped paying income tax. What happened then?

This happened: America’s middle class now holds a smaller share of U.S. wealth than the top 1%.

The middle 60% of U.S. households by income -- a measure economists often use as a definition of the middle class -- saw their combined assets drop to 26.6% of national wealth as of June, the lowest in Federal Reserve data going back three decades.

While “middle class” has different meanings to different people, many economists use income to define the group. The 77.5 million families in the middle 60% make about $27,000 to $141,000 annually, based on Census Bureau data.

Yeah? How much stupid shit did they buy?

I've got more money than I did 10 years ago and my paid-for-house is worth twice what it was when I bought it.

I've worked less than 4 years out of the last 10, and they were both part time jobs making just above minimum wage. And none of that money came from the stock market.

I noticed you didn't pick up the reference (insane retired Postal worker Stephen Paddock) to Trump threatening North Korea's Kim that he'd be nuked if he didn't bargain over nuclear weapons. Kim made a fool of Trump in several negotiations over nuclear weapons, so Trump ordered a new nuclear weapon, W76-2, specifically to kill Kim. It turns out that General Mark Milley would not allow Trump to use it, since Trump is as insane as Stephen Paddock.

I don't need it to go fast. I do whatever I want, whenever I want. And that includes working for anybody else. (And boy... what a time to not feel pressured even in the slightest to do that).

I have near zero bills and obligations. I could literally sit on my ass eating Cheetos and jerking off for the next 6 years and not worry about where my food is coming from or the electricity being turned off. And that's not even including spending one cent of my credit cards.

But that's not what I'm doing. I'm building up my net worth and multiplying my money by putting it into my house in a neighborhood that is coming up all around me (somehow, our infrastructure is being built up without any need for a 3.5 Trillion dollar Federal stimulus to make it happen... Oh... Right... We're not a Democrat ran shithole).

David Shor Is Telling Democrats What They Don’t Want to Hear

President Biden’s agenda is in peril. Democrats hold a bare 50 seats in the Senate, which gives any member of their caucus the power to block anything he or she chooses, at least in the absence of Republican support. And Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema are wielding that leverage ruthlessly. One of the highest-polling policies is letting Medicare negotiate prescription drug prices, but it’s Sinema who is trying to strike that from the reconciliation bill. This is lunacy.

The core problem Democrats face is that almost all politics is now national. They are one party and they will rise or fall together. Democrats cannot escape one another, no matter how they might try. Democrats face a sharp decline in ticket splitting — a byproduct of the nationalization of politics. As recently as 2008, the correlation between how a state voted for president and how it voted in Senate elections was about 71 percent. Close, but plenty of room for candidates to outperform their party. In 2020, it was 95.6 percent.

The days when, say, North Dakota’s Republicans would cheerfully vote for a Democrat for the Senate are long past. Just ask Heidi Heitkamp, the defeated North Dakota Democrat who’s now lobbying her former colleagues to protect the rich from paying higher taxes on inheritances. From 1960 to 1990, about half of senators represented a state that voted for the other party’s nominee for president, the political scientist Lee Drutman noted. Today, there are six. By 2024, or even 2022, maybe zero.

That must be because Biden is murdering babies: Former President Donald Trump accused Democrats of killing babies "up until the moment of birth" at a rally in Iowa. He also claimed that babies are executed "after birth." If Trump said it, it must be true, which explains why Biden's popularity dropped.

According to one poll.

The polling aggregate is down nearly 30points since Biden was inaugurated. Biden is much lower than 90% approval with Democrats in the aggregate.

Go ahead and show me that poll where Democrats and Republicans about equally disapprove of a Democrat for President. I look forward to you locating that poll because neither google nor bing can find it.

As for failed one-term Presidents, Lincoln had to switch to the National Union Party in 1864 because he couldn't get reelected as a Republican. And he wasn't popular as a Republican, either, getting only 40% of the votes in 1860.

Trashing the planet and hiding the money isn’t a perversion of capitalism. It is capitalism.

Capitalism was arguably born on a remote island. A few decades after the Portuguese colonised Madeira in 1420, they developed a system that differed in some respects from anything that had gone before. By felling the forests after which they named the island (madeira is Portuguese for wood), they created, in this uninhabited sphere, a blank slate – a terra nullius – in which a new economy could be built. Financed by bankers in Genoa and Flanders, they transported enslaved people from Africa to plant and process sugar. They developed an economy in which land, labour and money lost their previous social meaning and became tradable commodities.

As the geographer Jason Moore points out in the journal Review, a small amount of capital could be used, in these circumstances, to grab a vast amount of natural wealth. On Madeira’s rich soil, using the abundant wood as fuel, slave labour achieved a previously unimaginable productivity. In the 1470s, this tiny island became the world’s biggest producer of sugar.

Madeira’s economy also had another characteristic that distinguished it from what had gone before: the astonishing speed at which it worked through the island’s natural wealth. Sugar production peaked in 1506. By 1525 it had fallen by almost 80%. The major reason, Moore believes, was the exhaustion of accessible supplies of wood: Madeira ran out of madeira.

It took 60kg of wood to refine 1kg of sugar. As wood had to be cut from ever steeper and more remote parts of the island, more slave labour was needed to produce the same amount of sugar. In other words, the productivity of labour collapsed, falling roughly fourfold in 20 years. At about the same time, the forest clearing drove several endemic species to extinction.

In what was to become the classic boom-bust-quit cycle of capitalism, the Portuguese shifted their capital to new frontiers, establishing sugar plantations first on São Tomé, then in Brazil, then in the Caribbean, in each case depleting resources before moving on. As Moore says, the seizure, exhaustion and partial abandonment of new geographical frontiers is central to the model of accumulation that we call capitalism. Ecological and productivity crises like Madeira’s are not perverse outcomes of the system. They are the system.

There is a gulf between the reality of the system and the way it presents itself. Almost from the beginning of capitalism, attempts were made to sanitise it. Madeira’s early colonists created an origin myth, which claimed that the island was consumed by a wild fire, lasting for seven years, that cleared much of the forest. But there was no such natural disaster. The fires were set by people. The fire front we call capitalism burned across Madeira before the sparks jumped and set light to other parts of the world.

Capitalism’s fake history was formalised in 1689 by John Locke, in his Second Treatise of Government. “In the beginning all the world was America,” he tells us, a blank slate without people whose wealth was just sitting there, ready to be taken. But unlike Madeira, America was inhabited, and the indigenous people had to be killed or enslaved to create his terra nullius. The right to the world, he claimed, was established through hard work: when a man has “mixed his labour” with natural wealth, he “thereby makes it his property”. But those who laid claim to large amounts of natural wealth did not mix their own labour with it, but that of their slaves. The justifying fairytale capitalism tells about itself – you become rich through hard work and enterprise, adding value to natural wealth – is the greatest propaganda coup in human history.

When we see the same things happening in places thousands of miles apart, we should stop treating them as isolated phenomena, and recognise the pattern. All the talk of “taming” capitalism and “reforming” capitalism hinges on a mistaken idea of what it is.

Yup. The point isn't that I need to. The point is that I can.

It's why I'm going to be able to spend the remainder of my "work" life hardly doing any work unless I want to do it.

6ix, you are living a minimalist's life on $12.33/day.

Yup.

That is not Capitalism in the least.

It's half of it... and I'd argue it's the better half. At least when you're not the Federal Government and you don't have the authority to mint 1 Trillion Dollar platinum coins.

What war? They're killing themselves and each other. Democrats and the soy cuck idiots who vote for them are the least scary people on earth.

I get to sit back and laugh at their failures.

If ever comes the day that one of them grows a sack and comes knockin' on my door lookin' to make their problems my problems, don't worry your pretty little head about me, boy.

I'll give 'em a good welcome.

6ix, you sure are over-impressed with yourself. Mankind spent the first 300,000 years being impressed with itself and had nothing to show for all those hundreds of thousands of years of leisure time. Anthropologists know how mankind once lived because there are places where they still live that way -- I call them Islands of the Super Lazy, where people die young, which is what all mankind has been doing for most of history, except for the last few hundred years.

I don't put much value on money. I certainly don't go out of my way to acquire more than I need.

You seem really hung up on that. This sounds like a YOU problem.

Just like I said that I don't need to live off of $4500 per year, but I can, I'm also extremely far from lazy as well.

I do what I enjoy doing. Some days that is more or less nothing. Most days I'm investing by working on my house with stuff I've bought on sale (sometimes even lucking into damn-near-free), or working on my hobbies, or helping other people out. None of my activities are ever going to make me rich. Some will make me money down the road. Some plant obs on other people which will be paid back one day. A lot of it won't ever make me any money at all. But whatever it is that I'm doing (or not doing), I'm rarely found doing anything that I don't enjoy doing these days.

And probably most importantly, none of the money I make is from taking advantage of anybody else... whether that be from scamming people directly, or making money off the backs of other people's work via the stock market.

You sound like a bad guy right now, Second.

Just figured I'd fill you in on that since you're so clueless about yourself.

Political thinker, teacher and writer Hannah Arendt said the ideal subjects of totalitarian rule were people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction and between true and false no longer existed.

“Hannah Arendt talks about vulgarity and totalitarianism, that the way that leaders speak changes people’s – I won’t hesitate to say it – souls. It changes what people think is right and wrong, acceptable, unacceptable. And that does damage. It really does hurt the society.”

A key point that both Putin and Trump share is that when they lie they never apologize. “They never acknowledge that they’ve made mistakes or lie because they don’t believe that there is actually a truth out there. It is not just a habit. It’s a policy to try to crowd factuality out of the public sphere. You lie all the time. You call the journalists the liars and then it’s in that confusion that you govern. Because if people don’t believe that there is truth, they think they’re cynical, they think they’re sophisticated but in fact they’re completely impotent. Because without truth or without facts we can’t co-operate, we can’t have civil society, we can’t have opposition, we can’t have resistance. Without trust we can’t have the rule of law.”
