The Pentagon is paying Trump to stay at his resort, which was losing money until the Pentagon sent aircrews there. No, Trump cannot be stealing $millions from American taxpayers. That would be unthinkable!

In early Spring of this year, an Air National Guard crew made a routine trip from the U.S. to Kuwait to deliver supplies.

What wasn’t routine was where the crew stopped along the way: President Donald Trump’s Turnberry resort, about 50 miles outside Glasgow, Scotland.

Since April, the House Oversight Committee has been investigating why the crew on the C-17 military transport plane made the unusual stay — both en route to the Middle East and on the way back — at the luxury waterside resort, according to several people familiar with the incident. But they have yet to receive any answers from the Pentagon.

The inquiry is part of a broader, previously unreported probe into U.S. military expenditures at and around the Trump property in Scotland. According to a letter the panel sent to the Pentagon in June, the military has spent $11 million on fuel at the Prestwick Airport — the closest airport to Trump Turnberry — since October 2017, fuel that would be cheaper if purchased at a U.S. military base. The letter also cites a Guardian report that the airport provided cut-rate rooms and free rounds of golf at Turnberry for U.S. military members.

Taken together, the incidents raise the possibility that the military has helped keep Trump’s Turnberry resort afloat — the property lost $4.5 million in 2017, but revenue went up $3 million in 2018.

“The Defense Department has not produced a single document in this investigation,” said a senior Democratic aide on the oversight panel. “The committee will be forced to consider alternative steps if the Pentagon does not begin complying voluntarily in the coming days.”

Jonathan Franzen has pissed off a lot of people by writing in the New Yorker that we should just admit the obvious: we’ve lost the war on climate change. He says that the conditions for success are simply unacceptable for most people, but more among Republicans than Democrats.

The first condition is that every one of the world’s major polluting countries institute draconian conservation measures, shut down much of its energy and transportation infrastructure, and completely retool its economy. . . . The actions taken by these countries must also be the right ones. Vast sums of government money must be spent without wasting it and without lining the wrong pockets . . . . Finally, overwhelming numbers of human beings, including millions of government-hating Americans, need to accept high taxes and severe curtailment of their familiar life styles without revolting.

“There is infinite hope,” Kafka tells us, “only not for us.” This is a fittingly mystical epigram from a writer whose characters strive for ostensibly reachable goals and, tragically or amusingly, never manage to get any closer to them.

Very interesting take. I have to agree with his view that looking around I don't see many people "getting on board" with what we'd need to do (according to experts) to slow real serious climate change the disasters that will come with it. But neither do I see his solution working either - same sweater, different color:

"All-out war on climate change made sense only as long as it was winnable. Once you accept that we’ve lost it, other kinds of action take on greater meaning. Preparing for fires and floods and refugees is a directly pertinent example. But the impending catastrophe heightens the urgency of almost any world-improving action. In times of increasing chaos, people seek protection in tribalism and armed force, rather than in the rule of law, and our best defense against this kind of dystopia is to maintain functioning democracies, functioning legal systems, functioning communities. In this respect, any movement toward a more just and civil society can now be considered a meaningful climate action. Securing fair elections is a climate action. Combatting extreme wealth inequality is a climate action. Shutting down the hate machines on social media is a climate action. Instituting humane immigration policy, advocating for racial and gender equality, promoting respect for laws and their enforcement, supporting a free and independent press, ridding the country of assault weapons—these are all meaningful climate actions. To survive rising temperatures, every system, whether of the natural world or of the human world, will need to be as strong and healthy as we can make it."

^susceptible to the same meh attitude and denial that faces us now.

I see no Trump lovers getting on board, but that is one of many reasons they love Trump -- he tells them there is nothing to get on board with, that it is all a Democratic Party hoax.

Kevin Drum thinks solutions are possible, but he is not a Trump lover:

Success is still possible, even if it’s hardly certain. However, Franzen’s assessment of human nature is something to be taken seriously and it should illuminate the way we approach climate change. Working with human nature is far more likely to produce results than fighting it, and that means finding new ways to make green energy cheap and plentiful instead of fruitlessly pleading with people to use less of it.

In the meantime, it makes a lot of sense to also put a lot of work into growing our use of wind and solar, two technologies we have already. It’s not enough, but it will reduce the amount we have to do when we finally do come up with real solutions. That’s well worth it.

Trump is definitely a fan of coal. He is not a fan of wind and solar. I think he actually hates wind energy . . . he says it causes cancer. What a nut he is. Trump Says Wind Turbines Cause Cancer https://time.com/5649313/trump-wind-cancer-iowa/

Absolutely definitely agree with the "go with human nature, don't fight it" approach. I have used the example of our city providing us (for a tiny fee) recycling containers that are easy to use and store. They go out on trash day so you are already out there. They have made recycling too easy to ignore.
I would also appeal to Greed. Tax savings for doing X. People will do almost anything for money.

First on my list would be rewarding people through tax incentives to NOT have kids.

The ass backward reward system we have in place today breeds countless idiots on a daily basis.

How big is your carbon footprint?

Now multiply that exponentially for every kid you have.

A political party which promotes your plan is working against human nature. Humans want more people like themselves (didn't you know?) and they want their enemies to die off (shouldn't you expect that, just from the history of all wars?).

Trump supporters are not going to hear very much that’s critical of Trump. But these people know what they care about and they do really live their lives in certain kinds of jobs, middle-class jobs for the most part. They attend certain kinds of churches, where their social life and moral beliefs are anchored. And they’re angry about the changing generational and ethnic dynamics of the country and feel threatened by them. So they’re not being irrational, and there’s a tendency on the left, I think, to treat people as somehow irrational because they don’t believe what we think they ought to believe economically. Well, that’s just not the way politics works. Politics — a lot of politics — is about “who we are” and “who they are.” And these people know who they are, and they know who their enemies are.

From "The Tea Party Got What It Wanted"

Ten years later, it’s clear what the movement was all about: race, immigration, and welfare chauvinism.

If Democrats want to prioritize beating Trump in 2020, they're no longer acting like it.

From day one they haven't acted like they wanted to beat Trump. I'm half convinced that everybody who's been on that stage is working for Trump.

2020 is going to be a blowout because of the constant pandering to the extreme left.

Is that CNN falling in line with my predictions about the media starting to back Trump "reluctantly" too?

Too predictable.

Trump is great for clickbait headlines and ad revenue.

You are pointing out something that explains why things seldom change for the better in the Federal government. For people like me, the system works perfectly well. I get whatever I want. I think the upper 50% of Americans are getting most of what they want (the higher up in the hierarchy you are, the more of your dreams you get) and they vote in such a way to keep things mostly the same. That majority, the upper 50%, don't want the Democrats to fix what is wrong for the lower 50% of the population, unless fixing what is wrong can be done without the upper 50% losing some of their advantages to the lower 50%. The Democratic Presidential candidates don't seem to be aware that the upper 50% really don't like the lower 50%. The upper 50% doesn't want to sacrifice its position to help the lower 50%. Since far more of the upper 50% go to the polls compared to the lower 50%, who is more likely to win the Presidency? Whoever the upper 50% likes best.

The ultimate Democratic candidate for President needs to reassure the Upper 50% that things will NOT change, other than fat, dumb, lying Trump will be gone:

"People Voted for Trump Because They Were Anxious, Not Poor"
www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2018/04/existential-anxiety-not-po
verty-motivates-trump-support/558674
/
Quote:

Mutz examined voters whose incomes declined, or didn’t increase much, or who lost their jobs, or who were concerned about expenses, or who thought they had been personally hurt by trade. None of those things motivated people to switch from voting for Obama in 2012 to supporting Trump in 2016. Indeed, manufacturing employment in the United States has actually increased somewhat since 2010. And as my colleague Adam Serwer has pointed out, “Clinton defeated Trump handily among Americans making less than $50,000 a year.”

Meanwhile, a few things did correlate with support for Trump: a voter’s desire for their group to be dominant, as well as how much they disagreed with Clinton’s views on trade and China. Trump supporters were also more likely than Clinton voters to feel that “the American way of life is threatened,” and that high-status groups, like men, Christians, and whites, are discriminated against.

This unfounded sense of persecution is far from rare, and it seems to be heightened during moments of societal change. As my colleague Emma Green has written, white evangelicals see more discrimination against Christians than Muslims in the United States, and 79 percent of white working-class voters who had anxieties about the “American way of life” chose Trump over Clinton. As I pointed out in the fall of 2016, several surveys showed many men supported Trump because they felt their status in society was threatened, and that Trump would restore it. Even the education gap in support for Trump disappears, according to one analysis, if you account for the fact that non-college-educated whites are simply more likely to affirm racist views than those with college degrees. (At the most extreme end, white supremacists also use victimhood to further their cause.)

These why-did-people-vote-for-Trump studies are clarifying, but also a little bit unsatisfying, from the point of view of a politician. They dispel the fiction—to use another 2016 meme—that the majority of Trump supporters are disenfranchised victims of capitalism’s cruelties. At the same time, deep-seated psychological resentment is harder for policy makers to address than an overly meager disability check. You can teach out-of-work coal miners to code, but you may not be able to convince them to embrace changing racial and gender norms. You can offer universal basic incomes, but that won’t ameliorate resentment of demographic changes.

In other words, it’s now pretty clear that many Trump supporters feel threatened, frustrated, and marginalized—not on an economic, but on an existential level. Now what?

Check the candidates' policy positions:
www.politico.com/2020-election/candidates-views-on-the-issues/

Congress can, but a President cannot change those policies. It is stupid to think that a Democratic President will be the leader of a Republican controlled Senate. So long as there are 41 Republican Senators, Congress will remain in a deadlock. The next Democratic President cannot lead a deadlocked Congress to anywhere. It is still deadlocked. It is a bad idea for the Democrats to take policy positions that will cause them to lose votes for President. The Democrats running for President can take a position that loses votes, but the future President needs to WAIT until AFTER Congress is not deadlocked, or else the Democrat won't get elected in the first place.

What the Democrats are doing now is giving Trump more ammo to fire at the eventual Democratic Presidential candidate.

Try keeping peepl tuned into a debate for 2 owrz in wich everybody agreez with each other. Then see how many voterz dont seem to hav the time to woc the next debate.

The primariez are not just for defining the candidate's pozitionz, they are for jenerating interest. Maybe even enthuziazm.

The notion that "you dont want to create tokking points for the Republicanz to uze in the jeneral election" ignorez the fact that they will make up tokking points anyway. Its not like Trump chumps are going to fact check anything.

I'm seeing the same problem we had in 2016 - no karizma.

The few hoo hav a hint uv karizma, at least in my opinion, arent polling well enuf to get the air time needed to reach everybody.

A possibility that the majority are tired uv Trumps juvenile antics and just want stability coud win the election for Joe, Bernie or Liz. That they are in the lead iz good evidens for that.

I have not watched any debates. The only thing I care about is who is energetic, smart and sane and who is old, dumb and mentally unbalanced. Sorry to say, but Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden, and Trump are too old or too dumb or too crazy to be President. All three will have a deadlocked Congress, so there won't be a Green New Deal or Medicare for All or a 100% complete Texas/Mexico Wall or a Moon base or smaller Military budget or whatever crazy ideas are cooking in Trump's and Bernie's and Joe's addled old brains. Congress will be just as stuck in the mud 8 years from now as it is today, unless there are miraculously fewer than 41 Republican Senators. 33 or fewer would be a better number.

From today's Houston Chronicle, after yesterday's flood:

For Houston, climate change is not some abstract, faraway issue. The city is on the front lines, whether it wants to be or not. Not only is it the energy capital of the world, home to oil and gas companies that produce the fossil fuels that contribute to a warming planet, it’s already experiencing the effects of severe storms such as Hurricane Harvey and the one flooding streets and neighborhoods across the region as we write this, tropical depression Imelda.

If the emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are not reduced, intense storms and flooding will become commonplace. Worldwide, a changing climate will lead to increased sea level rise, intense heat waves and prolonged droughts. Experts also warn that up to a million plant and animal species are at risk of disappearing, with untold impact on humanity.

These are all irreversible changes that will devastate nations and economies. Many changes are already underway as our political leaders continue to dither and even question if climate change is real. Time is running out.

When it comes to the issues, the gulf between those two parties is incredibly wide.

1) Health Care

Democrats have a variety of plans, but almost everyone agrees that health care should be a right, not a privilege. That is why they support government intervention to make insurance more affordable and care more accessible.

Republicans remain committed to repealing Obamacare and letting the free market reign when it comes to affordability and accessibility.

2) Immigration

Democrats support a secure border and a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. When it comes to asylum-seekers and legal immigration, they support humane policies that align with this country’s stated values.

Republicans are committed to fear-mongering about immigrants and enacting xenophobic policies.

3) Guns

Democrats support common sense gun safety measures that, based on research, would reduce the toll of 40,000 gun deaths in this country every year.

Republicans have consistently refused to consider any gun safety measures.

4) Climate Change

Democrats agree that climate change poses the existential crisis of our lifetimes and have various plans to address it.

Republicans generally deny the scientific evidence of climate change and have blocked any measures to address it.

5) Perhaps even more important than these specific issues is the fact that, other than racist fear-mongering and tax cuts for the wealthy, Republicans don’t really have an agenda. Instead, they have been content to simply block anything Democrats support.

And apparently not understood by many either.

Quote:

1) Health Care

Democrats have a variety of plans, but almost everyone agrees that health care should be a right, not a privilege. That is why they support government intervention to make insurance more affordable and care more accessible.

Republicans remain committed to repealing Obamacare and letting the free market reign when it comes to affordability and accessibility.

Obamacare is a terrible failure. I don't know many rich people. The people I know who are doing well enough are just hanging on to the bottom of middle class, and especially those that live in Illinois, are being taxed out of it. My old man is retired and has VA. His wife is not close to retirement, however, and the premiums he has to pay for her health insurance are 5 times what they were before the ACA was enacted and the deductible has risen 300%.

Now that the tax penalty is gone if you don't have it, the only reason that it was passed in the supreme court, it's also unconstitutional.

Quote:

2) Immigration

Democrats support a secure border and a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. When it comes to asylum-seekers and legal immigration, they support humane policies that align with this country’s stated values.

Republicans are committed to fear-mongering about immigrants and enacting xenophobic policies.

Another good story ruined by video footage. Here's your current frontrunner on the issue:

And he's just about the most moderate of the whole bunch.

In the mean time, building a wall using war funds, the fact that there is a new country that will accept asylum seekers south of Mexico so they legally can't come here, and removing people who are here illegally is not xenophobic.

Quote:

3) Guns

Democrats support common sense gun safety measures that, based on research, would reduce the toll of 40,000 gun deaths in this country every year.

Republicans have consistently refused to consider any gun safety measures.

Beto just said he'd do what conspiracy theorists said the Democrats would do
for decades now.

You really should be watching those debates you can't be bothered with watching before having any opinions on issues.

Quote:

4) Climate Change

Democrats agree that climate change poses the existential crisis of our lifetimes and have various plans to address it.

Republicans generally deny the scientific evidence of climate change and have blocked any measures to address it.

Both parties are useless when it comes to climate change, whether they acknowledge the truth of it or not.

What I see here is a bunch of faggots on the left who virtue signal all day long from their brand new smart phone every year that was made in China. Overprivlidged idiots that have no concept where the shit they buy is made, who makes it and what condition those people live in from day to day. All we've done is outsource our pollution, but it's a small world afterall... Just because we don't have smog so thick you can cut it with a knife in LA or hollowed out shells of what used to be great industrial areas like Detroit, doesn't mean that we're not still destroying the planet with our unchecked consumerism.

Quote:

5) Perhaps even more important than these specific issues is the fact that, other than racist fear-mongering and tax cuts for the wealthy, Republicans don’t really have an agenda. Instead, they have been content to simply block anything Democrats support.

Pot meet kettle.

Everybody up on that Democratic stage talks about race non stop. They live and breath race. They dream about race when they sleep.

Democrats certainly have an agenda in 2019 though. At least you're right about that. But nobody wants any part of it. At least not nearly enough people to elect any one of those idiots as president.

Let me put it another way...

Democrats have had 3 years to come up with a policy and a person that could beat Donald Trump in 2020 and they have yet to find either.

Donald freakin' "You're Fired!" Trump.

STOP BLAMING OTHER PEOPLE FOR THE DEMOCRAT FAILURE.

Or... Just keep doing it and losing. Whatever floats your boat.

I'm going to vote for the Democrats. I'm not going to try to convince you, but I will point you to the history heading into the Civil War. The South could not be talked out of keeping slaves because the citizens of the South believed it was wrong to pay a middle-class wage to their black workers. The white workers were not treated much better. The Southern citizens felt that zero was the correct minimum wage. There had to be a War to fix the South's understanding of how to run an economy. As luck would have it, the losers started that war. When it was all over, the losers were still convinced they were right about the minimum wage. That has not changed, other than the minimum wage is not zero today, but it is still not high enough to live a middle-class life.

What also has not changed is that by its original design Congress can be deadlocked, where no decision can be made. For a time during and after the War, the people causing the deadlock had resigned from Congress. Finally, Congress could make decisions, but the mistake was to allow them back to deadlock Congress again. We are still living in the aftermath of that War and Congress can't fix anything because of the people who are deadlocking Congress. Congress needs to be either all one way or all the other. This Republican vs Democrat split, and the resulting deadlock, can't end without some serious ugliness.

Fortunately for the Republican voters of America, the GOP leadership is smart enough to not resign from Congress and start their own GOP legislature, unlike the stupid Confederate leadership and their new government with a Capital in Richmond, Virginia. The GOP will ensure the Federal Government in DC stays deadlocked.

Instead, we will have continuous shouting at each other, like in 1850, but this time about more varied economic issues than just the slavery issue. The disagreements between Democrats vs Republicans are about money, same as the First Civil War, whether the argument detours into minimum wage or health care or climate change or guns or immigrants or trade or tariffs or coal or welfare or abortion or taxes or the deficit or homelessness or the Texas/Mexico Wall or state's rights or water and air pollution or Supreme Court appointments for life or the Electoral College or statehood for Washington DC.

I expect many more decades of ugliness between Democrats and Republicans, maybe ending with a Second Civil War, maybe ending peacefully in a series of elections where one side gets a permanent majority so large that Congress cannot deadlock.

I've got parable. There were two pilots on an International flight across the Atlantic for American Airlines. One was a Democrat. The other a Republican. They could not agree on what country the plane will land. Are they going to Jair Bolsonaro's Brazil with the Republican or Denmark with the Democrat? Most passengers don't actually know how far apart those two countries are, but they sure have strong opinions. Either the passengers and the stewardesses will pull one of those pilots away from the controls, and keep that pilot forever away, or else the plane crashes.

When does the American Airlines plane run out of fuel and crash into the Atlantic? Maybe never because the plane has been flying around for decades, never landing and erratically swapping between Democrat and Republican every two years in thousands of local elections. But swapping back and forth is why American Airlines never arrives anywhere. The plane is in constant motion and the passengers are grumpy, except for the ones in First Class, who have comfortable seats and tasty food and clean toilets . . .

lol... you're lucky I don't fly in your plane, buddy. I'd clog up your toilet, and there'd be nobody you could bitch to about it since we weren't on a return trip to the US.

The Democrats want America to be Australia, not Austria where Hitler was born.

Australia looks good compared to America. It’s got the Democrats’ gun-control and national health insurance. It also has much higher wealth for people like 6ixStringJack:

The ranking by median wealth per adult favors countries with lower levels of wealth inequality and produces a slightly different table. This year, Australia (USD 191,450) edged ahead of Switzerland (USD 183,340) into first place according to our estimates. The median wealth placements of Belgium (USD 163,430), Canada (USD 106,340), New Zealand (98,610), the United Kingdom (97,170) and Singapore (USD 91,660) are similar to their mean wealth ranking, but lower inequality moves France (USD 106,830) up five places to fifth position, the Netherlands (USD 114,930) up eight places to fourth position, and Japan (USD 103,860) up ten places to seventh position. In contrast, high wealth inequality pushes Norway down seven places, and Denmark down 11 places, while median wealth of just USD 61,670 relegates the United States to 18th place, alongside Austria and Korea.

The gun nuts in Australia said the same thing, but then there was one massacre on April 28, 1996, in Port Arthur, Australia. Australian gun nuts are not even a tenth as nutty as American-gun-nuts/Republicans, who will never change their minds irregardless of how many thousands of massacres in America.

Leading Civil Rights Lawyer Shows 20 Ways Trump Is Copying Hitler’s Early Rhetoric and Policies

www.commondreams.org/views/2019/08/09/leading-civil-rights-lawyer-show
s-20-ways-trump-copying-hitlers-early-rhetoric-and

A younger Trump, according to his first wife’s divorce filings, kept and studied a book translating and annotating Adolf Hitler’s pre-World War II speeches in a locked bedside cabinet. The English edition of My New Order, published in 1941, also had analyses of the speeches’ impact on his era’s press and politics. Ugly and appalling as they are, those speeches are masterpieces of demagogic manipulation.

“Watching Trump work his crowds, though, I see a dangerously manipulative narcissist unleashing the demagogic spells that he learned from studying Hitler’s speeches — spells that he cannot control and that are capable of eroding the fabric of American democracy,” Neuborne says. “You see, we’ve seen what these rhetorical techniques can do. Much of Trump’s rhetoric — as a candidate and in office — mirrors the strategies, even the language, used by Adolf Hitler in the early 1930s to erode German democracy.”

Across the world, businesses, scientific institutions, investors, and governments are effectively unanimous in recognizing the urgent need for action on climate change. The science has made it inescapably clear that business as usual leads to disaster. Many debates remain over the best path forward, but the basic case for action has become unassailable.

And so for the most part, opponents of action — generally far-right coalitions fueled by a mix of fossil-fuel cronyism and populist ethnonationalism — don’t assail it. They do everything they can to distract from it.

That almost always involves attacking the messengers (“Al Gore has a big house”) and their proposed solutions (“the Green New Deal will take away your hamburgers”). The scientists are after grant money; the activists are undercover socialists; the leaders are hypocrites; the marchers litter. Casting doubt on the motives and authenticity of people fighting for progressive causes is the right’s primary political tool, with efforts now led out of the White House.

For climate scientists and advocates, it’s a familiar trap. Any political program sufficient to address climate change at scale is, almost by definition, going to be radical, which allows the right to dismiss it as “far left.” The go-to attack on the climate movement is that it’s a “watermelon,” green on the outside and socialist red on the inside — that climate change is just a cover story for the political program.

Greta Thunberg has sidestepped attacks on her motives by almost entirely refraining from endorsing specific political reforms or policies. “I can’t really speak up about things like [politics],” she told Wallace-Wells, “no one would take me seriously.”

Her insistence on this point was illustrated when she submitted the IPCC’s report on limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius in lieu of testifying to the House. Attached was a short letter that said: “I am submitting this report as my testimony because I don’t want you to listen to me. I want you to listen to the scientists. And I want you to unite behind the science. And then I want you to take action.” She refuses to allow her opinions to become the focus.

Coming from almost any adult, this strategy would be vulnerable. Adults have political worldviews and very few have the discipline to keep them entirely hidden. But Thunberg is, in her own words, an “uneducated teenager.” She’s 16 years old! She can’t be expected to know what actions government agencies need to take and she doesn’t pretend to.

She just drags the focus back, again and again, to the subject grown-ups want to avoid: the need for immediate action and their longstanding failure to take any.

Great News! Wall Street Democrats Might Leave the Party!

Anything that accelerates the split in the decades-long marriage between the Democratic Party and Big Money should be celebrated. The transformation in policy that would ensue if Wall Street Democrats walk away from the party, freeing it from self-censorship and bad ideas, far outstrips whatever money they might raise for Democratic candidates.

“I want to help the party, but Warren’s going to hurt me, so I’m going to help President Trump,” said one private equity executive, in a perfect distillation of putting personal enrichment ahead of what he claims to be his political preferences. “They will not support her. It would be like shutting down their industry,” said another bank executive, warning that her policies will be worse for Wall Street than Barack Obama’s.

The most telling quote came from a hedge fund executive, who fretted that if Warren helped people discover that the Trump tax cuts only helped fatten corporate wallets, “Wall Street would not like the public thinking about that.” So their beef with “far left” Democrats is that they would tell too much truth about our broken tax code and the soaring inequality it fosters.

That’s exactly the right attitude, which Bernie Sanders has backed up with his constant invocations of the old FDR line about the economic royalists, “I welcome their hatred.” And proudly rejecting the support of Wall Street isn’t just a populist pose; it’s a viable economic policy. Just about everything that has ailed the Democratic Party since the 1970s from a policy standpoint can be traced back to an ugly partnership with Wall Street money.

As Brooks Jackson details in the seminal book "Honest Graft", Democrats, led by chief fundraiser for the House campaign arm Tony Coelho, cozied up to Big Money to hang onto power during the Reagan revolution.

This wound up betraying just about every New Deal principle there was, and muddying the distinctions between the party and the Republicans.

Whether you care about our broken health care system, the boiling planet, the breakdown of economic mobility and the middle class, or practically any other failing in our country, you can eventually find large financial interests at the heart of the policies that made it happen. And Democrats needing to tend to Wall Street interests for campaign capital resisted the necessary steps to reverse the cycles on all fronts. Solutions that would have followed the New Deal tradition, from universal Medicare to caps on bank size, couldn’t find their way through a corrupted, constrained Congress. The banks “frankly own the place,” Dick Durbin said in 2009, a year after the same banks cratered the economy.

If Wall Street bigwigs suddenly bolt from the Democrats en masse in reaction to Warren’s or Sanders’s nomination, suddenly nobody would have to check with some rich executive before deciding whether to endorse good policy. Suddenly, real options would be allowed to get onto the menu in Washington. Perhaps most important, you would have a clearer distinction between a party of concentrated capital and a party of the plain person in the street. That has been completely removed from our politics because of a band of predatory financiers who imagine themselves as worldly, socially liberal Democrats.

In cold electoral terms, New York and Connecticut aren’t going red even if the financial industry decides to flip entirely. But the Midwest and Sun Belt might respond differently to a Democratic Party that actually tends to their tangible needs, and not hamstrung by financial interests counseling caution and dangling campaign cash.

The dynamic here is excruciatingly simple: thousands of rich donors give millions of dollars to hundreds of Democratic Congressmen, who then feel that they have to listen for 2 or 3 minutes to the rich donors. All those donors are probably pretty good speakers or salesmen who have carefully prepared a sales pitch, which can influence a weak-willed Congressman. Strong-willed Senators such as Bernie or Elizabeth Warren would tell the salesmen to place them on the do-not-call list and hangup the phone, but most Congressmen want to be polite, which is unfortunate for America because the salesmen will sell the country what it can't afford and doesn't need.

The only way for Congress to handle pushy salesmen is to not speak to them, but salesmen from Wall St got smart by donating to Congress.

Warren has said on many occasions that she's taking big donor money for the General.

Who gives a shit that she's not doing it in the primary when she's going to be bought and paid for in the end anyhow?

Politics is crude, but not as crude as the model you are using of buying a Senator. During the Gilded Age, monopolists who wanted a favor from a Senator would give him a bag of money to spend as he pleases. Congress had to make that explicitly illegal to stop those crude idiot-Senators. Nowadays what the Wall St is buying with their donations is time on the phone with a Senator to layout a case of how wonderful it would be for America if only Wall St could do as it pleased. Senators are suppose to handle those calls the way AARP recommends to retired people -- ask the salesman to put your name on the Do-Not-Call list, then hangup. Don't listen to the sales pitch. But some Senators won't hangup because they are idiots or they actually are crooks.

Phil Gramm was one of those crooked Senators. He went from the Banking Committee to directly work for a Bank. And he got a multi-million dollar salary from the bank versus his $174,000/year Senate pay. Gramm does not see what is wrong with that, but Elizabeth Warren does. Unfortunately, what Gramm is doing is not illegal, unlike if he just took a suitcase full of hundred dollar bills from the Bank as a bribe.

You said that Warren was strong willed and implied that she is above taking big money.

Warren said the same thing, then reneged on it.

Don't care about any of your changing of the subject beyond that. Just admit that you are wrong.

How these well-intended political reforms landed us with Donald Trump

1) Campaign finance reform

The concept behind campaign finance reform was to make elections more democratic by limiting the amount of money voters could contribute to individual candidates and to federal election campaigns in total. But the unintended consequence of this regulation was to drive our politics to extremes. Political campaigns have become dauntingly expensive. The average Senate race can cost more than $20 million; and a presidential election costs more than $1 billion. In order to raise that kind of money with a $2,800 individual giving limit, a candidate must attract tens of thousands of people to write individual checks. To get those checks, the popular winning strategy is to scare voters into thinking they will lose their gun rights, or their abortion rights, or their jobs. A losing strategy is to promise that the candidate will seek bipartisan compromise in pursuit of more effective government.

2) The demise of the “smoke-filled room”

Party candidates used to be selected behind closed doors in “smoke-filled rooms.” The people in those rooms had risen to political influence in a competitive process, were professionally committed to electoral success, and were choosing candidates they knew personally and as professional peers. In other words: Donald Trump would not have emerged from such a process.

But the method was neither transparent nor democratic. To address this, both parties adopted direct primaries in the 1970s, and since then primary voters have done the choosing. On average, only about 20% of the eligible electorate votes in primaries. Those voters lean toward the extremes: They are generally the ideologues who pull the Democratic party to the left and the Republican party to the right.

There is a reason I won't. Warren is not who you think I think she is, but me correcting you is of no interest to me. You are a waste of my time.

In general, correcting Republicans is a waste of time for Democrats. You're mentally impaired. Republicans need to fix what is wrong inside their own heads, but they ain't gonna do the work to get their heads aligned with reality. I'll give you an example of where reality does not match what is inside Trump's head. Trump won't do the work necessary to correct himself. He is happy to be wrong and not know it and Democrats telling him won't change him:

The public is frustrated with Congress’ lack of progress on policy issues and therefore the parties have adopted strategies centered on blaming the other party for inaction.

This theme recurs in recent Trump tweets on subjects ranging from China to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to nothing in particular, all of which repeat the phrase “Do Nothing Democrats.” Trump refuses to learn what the Democrats have done.

Under the circumstances, it’s worth emphasizing that Trump's tweets are simply false. House Democrats have passed a lot of bills, including conceptually ambitious legislation to curb corruption in politics and begin to address climate change along with a host of smaller measures. They’ve passed legislation on background checks for gun buyers, tried to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, tried to extend nondiscrimination rules to LGBTQ people, and tried to raise the minimum wage to $15/hour. The reason these bills — and measures addressing prescription drug prices, insurance for people with preexisting conditions, and consumer protection in financial services — aren’t going anywhere is that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell won’t bring them up for votes.

It isn’t even that these bills are being defeated in the Senate. McConnell is aware that these are popular measures, and he doesn’t want to make his members cast unpopular votes against them. Consequently, Republicans have simply refused to let them come to the floor, even while pretending to be mad that Democrats are too busy with impeachment to legislate.

The Washington Post tells us today, for about the hundredth time, that Midwest farmers are fed up with President Trump. Between his tariffs and his ethanol exemptions and his inability to make a deal with China, farmers are losing patience with a president they eagerly supported at first.

But I’ll save you the trouble of reading the whole thing. Here’s the only sentence that really matters:

Many of those grumbling about Trump today concede they are unlikely to vote for a Democratic presidential candidate next year.

Look: either you’re willing to vote for someone else or you’re not. If you’re not, then your grumbles are meaningless and Trump doesn’t care about you. That goes for both voters and members of Congress. It’s not complicated.

Completely missing the message that Democrats in 2019 are so terrible that the people who are providing us with food to eat would still rather vote for Trump.

It is, in fact, very complicated.

Oh, and fuck Warren. She is exactly who I say she is. She's a shill that lies about not taking big donor money, and then turns around and takes big donor money.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Here Comes the Trump Slump (And he has only himself to blame)

Donald Trump loves to boast about the economy, claiming to have achieved unprecedented things. As it happens, none of his claims are true. While both G.D.P. and employment have registered solid growth, the Trump economy continued a long expansion that began under Barack Obama. In fact, someone who looked at only economic data would never guess that an election had taken place.

But now it’s starting to look as if Trump really will achieve something unique: He may well be the first president of modern times to preside over a slump that can be directly attributed to his own policies, rather than bad luck.

There has always been a deep unfairness about the relationship between economics and politics: Presidents get both credit and blame for events that usually have little to do with their actions. Jimmy Carter didn’t cause the stagflation that put Ronald Reagan in the White House; George H.W. Bush didn’t cause the economic weakness that elected Bill Clinton; even George W. Bush bears at most tangential responsibility for the 2008 financial crisis.

More recently, the “mini-recession” of 2015-16, a slump in manufacturing that may have tipped the scale to Trump, was caused mainly by a plunge in energy prices rather than any of Barack Obama’s policies.

Now the U.S. economy is going through another partial slump. Once again, manufacturing is contracting. Agriculture is also taking a severe hit, as is shipping. Overall output and employment are still growing, but around a fifth of the economy is effectively in recession.

But unlike previous presidents, who were just unlucky to preside over slumps, Trump has done this to himself, largely by choosing to wage a trade war he insisted would be “good, and easy to win.”

The link between the trade war and agriculture’s woes is obvious: America’s farmers are deeply dependent on export markets, China in particular. So they’re hurting badly, despite a huge financial bailout that is already more than twice as big as the Obama administration’s auto bailout.

Shipping may also seem an obvious victim when tariffs reduce international trade, although it’s not just an international issue; domestic trucking is also in recession.

The manufacturing slump is more surprising. After all, America runs a large trade deficit in manufactured goods, so you might expect that tariffs, by forcing buyers to turn to domestic suppliers, would be good for the sector. That’s surely what Trump and his advisers thought would happen.

But that’s not how it has worked out. Instead, the trade war has clearly hurt U.S. manufacturing. Indeed, it has done considerably more damage than even Trump critics like yours truly expected.

The Trumpist trade warriors, it turns out, missed two key points. First, many U.S. manufacturers depend heavily on imported parts and other inputs; the trade war is disrupting their supply chains. Second, Trump’s trade policy isn’t just protectionist, it’s erratic, creating vast uncertainty for businesses both here and abroad. And businesses are responding to that uncertainty by putting plans for investment and job creation on hold.

So Trump has bungled his way into a slump, even if it isn’t a full-blown recession, at least so far. It’s clearly going to hurt him politically, notably because of the contrast between his big talk and not-so-great reality. Also, the pain in manufacturing seems to be falling especially hard on those swing states Trump took by tiny margins in 2016, giving him the Electoral College despite losing the popular vote.

And while many presidents have found themselves confronting politically damaging economic adversity, Trump is, as I said, unique in that he really did this to himself.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that he will accept responsibility for his mistakes. For the past few months he has been trying to portray the Federal Reserve as the root of all economic evil, even though current interest rates are well below those his own officials predicted in their triumphalist economic projections.

My guess, however, is that Fed-bashing will prove ineffective as a political strategy, not least because most Americans probably have at best a vague idea of what the Fed is and what it does.

So what will come next? Trump being Trump, it’s a good bet that he’ll soon be denouncing troubling economic data as fake news; I wouldn’t be surprised to see political pressure on the statistical agencies to report better numbers. Hey, if it can happen to the National Weather Service, why not the Bureau of Economic Analysis (which reports, by the way, to Wilbur Ross)?

And somehow or other this will turn out to be another deep-state conspiracy, probably orchestrated by George Soros.

The scary thing is that around 35 percent of Americans will probably believe whatever excuses Trump comes up with.

www.nytimes.com/2019/10/03/opinion/trump-economy.html

Trump's trade attack on Europe couldn't come at a worse time for a region on the brink of recession. The EU is expected to retaliate if the WTO gives it the go-ahead at the start of next year. As we have seen with China, this could lead to more tariffs from either side in a tit-for-tat battle. The fear is that this downward trend won't stop.

Oh. And BTW... about Warren.

She just didn't double dip for the primary. She had a lot of donations from big donors left over from her senate bid that she rolled over into her presidential bid.

No new big donations for the primary, but a lot of old ones.

So her entire campaign was, in fact, kicked off by big donors.

Bernie might be a crazy old man and a socialist at heart, but at least he's not lying about anything. Hope his heart surgery went well.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

EDITED TO ADD:

Before somebody claims I'm not citing something, or I'm listening to fake news, here's something that is publicly available to everybody to do your own research, as to not have to rely on the Legacy Media lying to you one way or the other about it...

ELIZABETH FOR MA, INC WARREN FOR PRESIDENT, INC. PRIMARY MA 01/02/2019 $7,000,000.00
ELIZABETH FOR MA, INC WARREN FOR PRESIDENT, INC. PRIMARY MA 03/29/2019 $3,415,000.00
ELIZABETH FOR MA, INC WARREN FOR PRESIDENT, INC. PRIMARY MA 02/02/2019 $105,000.00
BULLY PULPIT WARREN FOR PRESIDENT, INC. PRIMARY DC 02/27/2019 $35,000.00
WEWORK COMPANIES INC. WARREN FOR PRESIDENT, INC. PRIMARY NY 02/26/2019 $10,425.00
WARREN, ELIZABETH WARREN FOR PRESIDENT, INC. PRIMARY MA 02/01/2019 $4,584.54
WEWORK COMPANIES INC. WARREN FOR PRESIDENT, INC. PRIMARY NY 04/10/2019 $4,337.50
ACTBLUE WARREN FOR PRESIDENT, INC. PRIMARY MA 04/30/2019 $3,000.00
MORROW, PATRICK WARREN FOR PRESIDENT, INC. PRIMARY MA 04/30/2019 $3,000.00

This is a list of the highest donations all the way through the individual capped donations of $2,800.00 which are not being argued here.

So, on record so far besides whatever WEWORK COMPANIES INC., BULLY PULPIT and ACTBLUE WARREN FOR PRESIDENT, INC. AND MORROW PATRIC WARREN FOR PRESIDENT INC. are, she's not technically lying about any new money for big donors coming in for the primary.

What she isn't telling you (lying by omission) is the fact that she started her primary bid with a grand total of $10,520,000 of campaign funds that she rolled over from her senate bid.
