The War on Truth Reaches Its Climax. Trump is telling two big lies, and a third will come soon.

I began writing a column for The Times way back in 2000. My beat was supposed to be economics and business. But I couldn’t help noticing that one of that year’s contenders for the presidency was systematically making false claims about his policy proposals. George W. Bush kept insisting that his tax cuts were targeted on the middle class, and his plan to privatize Social Security just wished away the system’s obligations to older Americans.

At the time, however, my editors told me that it wasn’t acceptable to use the word “lie” when writing about presidential candidates.

By now, though, most informed observers have, I think, finally decided that it’s OK to report the fact that Donald Trump lies constantly.

Many of the lies are trivial, often bizarrely so, like Trump’s repeated claims to have received an award that doesn’t even exist. But the president has closed out this year’s campaign with two huge, dangerous lies — and there’s every reason to fear that this week he will roll out a third big lie, perhaps even more dangerous than the first two.

1) The first big lie is the claim that America is being menaced by hordes of “rioters, looters, arsonists, gun-grabbers, flag-burners, Marxists.”

Anyone who walks around the “anarchist jurisdictions” of New York or Seattle can see with their own eyes that nothing like this is happening. And the data bear out the obvious. One systematic study found that the summer’s Black Lives Matter protests were overwhelmingly peaceful, and that “most of the violence that did take place was, in fact, directed against the B.L.M. protesters.”

Oh, and Trump keeps claiming that Joe Biden won’t condemn the small amount of violence that has actually happened — when Biden has, in fact, done exactly that.

So Trump wants Americans to be terrified of a menace that exists only in his imagination. At the same time, he wants us to ignore the very real menace of Covid-19.

Over the past few months Trump has effectively abandoned any effort to limit the spread of the coronavirus. In fact, he has been actively promoting that spread. One credible Stanford study estimated that Trump rallies, which involve large numbers of shouting people packed closely together, most unmasked, have caused around 30,000 infections and 700 deaths.

2) But Trump wants Americans to believe that the pandemic — which killed more Americans last month than are murdered in a typical year — is fake news. We’re “rounding the corner,” he insists, even as infections and hospitalizations are rising at a terrifying rate. The news media is going on about “Covid, Covid, Covid” only because it’s out to get him. Doctors are inflating the reported death toll because they want to make more money.

These big lies are immensely destructive, and not just because they lead to bad policies. Like it or not, presidential rhetoric affects how millions of Americans behave.

Trump’s lies about an anarchist threat have given encouragement to white supremacists, including domestic terrorists. His dismissal of the pandemic threat, his mocking of precautionary measures like mask-wearing, have done a lot to help the coronavirus spread.

But the worst may be yet to come.

It’s possible — barely — that Trump will legitimately win re-election, although this would require that the polls be much further off than they were in 2016. If that doesn’t happen, however, it’s a near-certainty that he will refuse to accept defeat quietly.

Unless he loses in an overwhelming landslide, he has indicated he will try to steal the election by blocking the counting of Biden votes, with the aid of partisan judges. I don’t think he’ll succeed, but I wish I was sure of that.

What if he doesn’t manage to hang on to office?

3) We all know what’s likely to come next: claims that he was robbed. He’ll claim that millions of people voted illegally — after all, he did that following the 2016 election, denying that he lost the popular vote. He’ll probably claim that millions of Trump votes were somehow discarded — after all, he has already made the false claim that ballots are being “dumped in rivers.”

And he’ll find a receptive audience. Professional forecasters have considered Biden the heavy favorite for a long time, but according to a late September Gallup survey, 90 percent of Republicans expect Trump to win. If he loses, our conspiracy-minded right will react with shock and rage.

The immediate result may very well be a wave of violence and property destruction — Trump supporters engaging in the behavior they falsely attribute to Black Lives Matter demonstrators. But that’s actually the part that worries me least.

No, the really big danger is that millions of our citizens will probably buy into an American version of the “stab in the back” myth that loomed large after Germany’s defeat in World War I, claiming the military was betrayed by the civilian government. And those voters may well end up choosing the G.O.P.’s next presidential candidate.

Yup. Trump is very likely to lose, like he has so many times before, accumulating over $1 billion in debt to Russia, but will insist he didn't.

His mindless sheep will engage in the terrorism he openly encourages. The typical American fascist doesn't even know what the word means.

They just think that their opinions, based on lies, are actually facts, and that might makes right.

The Trumptard terrorists thread will explode, along with a few mosques and synagogues.

Do not lose sight of the fact that all of this is absolutely insane. We are a broken society with a broken political system, made all the more worse by a broken-brained president.

Maybe the polls are right, and Joe Biden is on course for a dominant seven- or eight-point win over Donald Trump. He could pick up a couple of decisive swing states that are supposed to finish counting votes on Tuesday night—North Carolina and Arizona, for instance—and short-circuit the president’s plan to first claim victory, then sue his way to a second term. There’s a chance that Democrats will eke out a Senate majority, too, so that they can actually govern come January, and deal properly with the deadly plague that’s reshaped our lives and crippled the economy. Perhaps there won’t be any violence at voting places, and people will be able to cast their ballots without getting hurt. Knock on wood.

But even if this election does bring an orderly end to Trump era, do not for a second forget that absolutely everything about it, and the year that has led us to this point, has been utterly, incalculably insane, a 50-car pileup of reminders that we are a broken society with a broken political system that seems ever-more untenable, whether or not we are doomed to spend four more years with our addled president.

While we wait around for election results, David Cay Johnston provides us with a tidbit about how the rich are faring under Donald Trump:

Let’s start with IRS audits of the 23,400 richest American households, average income $30 million each. In 2018 the Trump administration audited seven. You read that right—seven. That’s an audit rate of 0.03%.

This is a dramatic shift from the recent past. Under Obama in 2015, America’s richest households were 270 times more likely to be audited than under Trump, my analysis of IRS Data Book tables data shows. That year 8.16% of these households had their tax returns audited, not 0.03%.

If American police detected murders at the 0.03% rate it would mean that they would become aware of just five of the 16,214 reported homicides in 2018. Of course, not everyone is a tax cheat, but audits are about detecting taxes due, whether through error or intent.

I'm amused that Trump declared he already won (something he said he would never do) without having won. The flipped coin is still in the air and nobody knows if it will land heads or tails, but Trump is already doing a victory dance and demanding the vote counting stop. GOP lawyers are at court houses all across the country waiting in line to be first in the door to file new lawsuits against vote counters.

The United States officially withdrew from the Paris Agreement today, casting the stakes of the still-undecided presidential election in planetary terms. With the completion of the formal withdrawal process, which Trump began in June 2017, the U.S. became the only country in the world not to participate in the global effort to fight the climate crisis.

Trump has dismissed climate change as a hoax and rolled back dozens of environmental regulations designed to protect the environment and stave off climate change.

America Is (Still) a Conservative Country

While we’re waiting for Pennsylvania and Georgia and Nevada to announce final results, I would like to post a chart from Gallup showing how many people consider themselves liberal vs. conservative:

The good news is that liberals have been making progress over the past few decades. The bad news is that only about a quarter of the country considers itself liberal, way behind the number who consider themselves conservative. Like it or not, this is the playing field.

There is literally only one demographic group which is more than one-third liberal: people with postgraduate degrees. Every single other group—whether broken down by gender, age, income, race, or region—is well under a third liberal. Even among the youngest voters, only 30 percent consider themselves liberal.

Wishful thinking holds no water. America is not yet a country that considers itself liberal, or even close to it. This is the underlying foundation of everything. Whatever your strategy for winning more elections, this is where you start from.

'Every. Single. One.': Ocasio-Cortez Notes Every Democrat Who Backed Medicare for All Won Reelection in 2020
The same cannot be said for those more centrist lawmakers who continue to defend the nation's increasingly unpopular for-profit healthcare system.

As Common Dreams reported Friday, while corporate-friendly Democrats have continued to go to bat for the for-profit healthcare system that lavishes billions of dollars each year on insurance companies, for-profit hospitals, and pharmaceutical giants, a new poll this week—put out by Fox News no less—shows that 72% of all U.S. voters would prefer a "government-run healthcare plan." And the poll is far from an outlier, with numerous surveys in recent years showing this trend.

"Polls consistently show a majority of the U.S. electorate [is] considerably to the left of both party leaderships... on issue after issue—the environment, electoral reform, [and] Medicare for All," said Jacobin's Luke Savage in response that poll.

Despite what "corporate front groups and lazy pundits always say," tweeted journalist Andrew Perez, "people absolutely do not like their private health insurance."

Ocasio-Cortez, who defeated a longtime Democratic politician in 2018 and who won re-election in her Bronx district by more than 50 points, endorsed the Vermont senator, Bernie Sanders, over Joe Biden in the Democratic presidential primary.

Since then, Ocasio-Cortez and her closest allies in Congress – a four-woman group known as “the squad” who all won reelection last week – toed the party line while calling on grassroots activists to boost Biden and Democrats down-ticket.

The truce is over. The failure of the party to operate an online strategy “in a real way that exhibits competence”, Ocasio-Cortez told the Times, made it hypocritical for the party to advance criticism of progressive messaging.

“If I lost my election, and I went out and I said: ‘This is moderates’ fault. This is because you didn’t let us have a floor vote on Medicare for all.’ And they opened the hood on my campaign, and they found that I only spent $5,000 on TV ads the week before the election?” Ocasio-Cortez said. “They would laugh. And that’s what they look like right now trying to blame the Movement for Black Lives for their loss.”

Grassroots activism that produced large turnout in Detroit, Philadelphia and Georgia was crucial to Biden’s win, and if the Democratic party fails to recognise that and incorporate the grassroots, the party disintegrates at the ballot box, Ocasio-Cortez said.

“It’s really hard for us to turn out nonvoters when they feel like nothing changes for them. When they feel like people don’t see them, or even acknowledge their turnout,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

“If the party believes after 94% of Detroit went to Biden, after Black organisers just doubled and tripled turnout down in Georgia, after so many people organised Philadelphia, the signal from the Democratic party is the John Kasich won us this election? I mean, I can’t even describe how dangerous that is.”

Kasich is a former Republican governor of Ohio who campaigned for Biden, endorsing him as a centrist that moderate Republicans could get behind. Such an appeal might have had traction in some places, such as northern Michigan and western Omaha. But Trump beat Biden in Ohio by eight points and half a million votes.

AOC Slams Democratic Establishment, Says It Lacks “Core Competencies” to Win Elections

Some of the failures of the party are “criminal,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “It’s malpractice.” Analyzing several of the campaigns that lost, Ocasio-Cortez saw that many failed to pursue a real strategy of online advertising and recruitment that didn’t leave them so vulnerable to Republican attacks. “Our party isn’t even online, not in a real way that exhibits competence,” she said.

In one of the most surprising portions of the interview, an evidently exasperated Ocasio-Cortez revealed that most swing state Democrats rejected her offer of help in their campaigns. “I offered to help every single swing district Democrat with their operation. And every single one of them, but five, refused my help,” she said. “And all five of the vulnerable or swing district people that I helped secured victory or are on a path to secure victory. And every single one that rejected my help is losing. And now they’re blaming us for their loss.” Although it wasn’t included in the interview, Herndon tweeted that Ocasio-Cortez did name the five on the record, but it was cut for space: Jahana Hayes from Connecticut; Katie Porter, TJ Cox, and Mike Levin from California; and Peter DeFazio from Oregon.

Ocasio-Cortez’s frustration with the establishment has led her to consider getting out of politics, she said. In a not-so-subtle warning to Biden, Ocasio-Cortez said that the first appointments he unveils will make it clear whether his administration will take demands of progressives seriously. “These transition appointments, they send a signal,” she said. “They tell a story of who the administration credits with this victory.”

The interview with the Times came shortly after Ocasio-Cortez started pushing back against the narrative that progressive causes were to blame for Democrats falling short of expectations in the election. In a series of tweets on Friday, Ocasio-Cortez said she “decided to open the hood on struggling campaigns” and found they “all had awful execution on digital,” a particularly galling oversight during a pandemic.

As Common Dreams reported last week, the blame game within the Democratic Party began immediately in the wake of its lackluster showing in down-ticket contests, with officials from the right and left flanks of the party pointing fingers at each other.

The New York Times allowed Ocasio-Cortez to make the evidence-backed case for the positive role played by the left in the 2020 election, but for the most part, corporate media outlets over the weekend did their best to cement the right-wing narrative that progressive policy ideas are to blame for the party's underwhelming performance in down-ballot races.

So-called moderate Republicans like former Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah, as well as moderate Democrats like South Carolina Congressman James Clyburn, were given airtime on CNN to falsely claim Americans don't back egalitarian policy proposals.

Joe Biden extends a hand to Trumpers — but we’re not ready to make peace with fascists

During Donald Trump’s four years in office, the mainstream American news media, in a desperate effort to normalize the grotesque and abominable, have groped and searched for moments when he could somehow become “presidential.” These attempts were largely about reassuring the nation, and themselves, that everything would somehow be OK with Trump as president, but such an authentic and real moment never came to be. It was an impossibility. Donald Trump is a fascist authoritarian, a strongman who is simultaneously a coward, a man without gravitas or substance, inflated and lifted up by supplicants and a political cult that exists in a knot of collective narcissism and other shared pathologies.
---
Because it worked out so well when his boss tried it with a far less radicalized Republican party.

Jesus fuck... When will Dems learn? Fascists don't change. They may have lost a little ground, but they're still there, and they're still nasty, cruel, violent motherfuckers who want you dead.

Seeking common ground with these pieces of shit has not, and never will work. You have to crush them ruthlessly. It's all they understand.

Because when they get power again (and they will, especially if you try to play nice), the masks will come off again, and the next evil bastard will be a lot smarter than Trump, and you will NOT be able to vote him out.

Either Trump or Ted Cruz can win in 2024. How? Between Ted and Trump, there isn’t much difference, other than Trump is fatter and stupider. The GOP candidate will get as many votes as in 2020. Joe Biden will be dead and Kamala Harris will be running. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will receive millions of votes as a third party Presidential candidate, splitting the Democratic vote and ensuring the GOP wins.

Come on two why so negative. Trump hasn't even conceded yet. OAC told the NY Times just the other day she isn't sure she wants to continue in politics, yet you have her running for president in 2024. What are you trying to stir up?

You have a very short memory. In case you don't recall, Ted Cruz shutdown the government in attempts to kill Obamacare. In case you don't recall, Trump can run again in 2024. There is no reason to think they can't win.

AOC thought about quitting early on. It wasn't the constant hate, lies and death threats coming her way from the reich wing that discouraged her. That is always to be expected.

It was the hate from her own party. The Dems are already trying to blame their failures on the left, when it is their own damn fault for not listening to what Dem voters actually want.

Like I already said, progressives won, big time. Center-right Republican lite candidates lost.

AOC won in a landslide against her well-financed center-right Democratic primary challenger, then went on to destroy her $10 million Republican opponent.

Why? Because she's what Democrats want. Just look at any survey.

The Republican Party Needs To Be Razed and the Earth Salted Behind It

www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2020/11/the-republican-party-needs-to-b
e-razed-and-the-ground-salted-behind-it
/

Why do I think the Republican Party is beyond redemption? I view their policy positions as mostly appalling, but that’s not the reason. I’m going to disagree with pretty much any conservative party, after all. It’s more about the underlying nature of the party leadership and what it believes it has to do in order to win. Over just the past decade or so, the Republican Party:

1 Chose Donald Trump as its presidential nominee.

2 Has openly strategized about suppressing the Black vote because Black voters heavily favor Democrats.

3 Plays footsie with insane conspiracy theories like QAnon.

4 Spent the entire Obama presidency ginning up fake scandals.

5 Lies relentlessly about its dedication to reducing the deficit.

6 Lies equally relentlessly about its dedication to passing a health care bill.

7 Lies about the impact of its tax bills on the rich.

8 Has killed thousands by making mask-wearing into a partisan football during a pandemic.

9 Has openly appealed to racial bigotry as a way of increasing its share of the white vote.

10 Denies the obvious reality of destructive climate change solely for partisan benefit.

11 Is currently doing its best to convince its base that the entire 2020 election was fraudulent.

This is, needless to say, not an exhaustive list, and none of it has anything to do with conservative policy. It speaks solely to the moral judgments of the party’s leaders, and these moral judgements are now so ingrained that I see no hope they’ll ever be abandoned. Perhaps in a different media universe they would have already paid a price for this, but in a conservative media universe dominated by Fox News, talk radio, and the Wall Street Journal editorial page they can get away with almost anything. Most Republican voters probably don’t even know their party has sunk to this level.

The key question is whether it’s possible to convince moderate conservatives to care about this kind of stuff. Or, like so many of us, are they willing to give it a pass as long as Republicans do the things they want them to do? It’s a discouraging thought.

My point is that you're looking at 2024. Nothing of what you speculate about is meaningful, so why bother?

I am not reaverfan. We are both pulling articles from the sources at the left end of the political spectrum.

I don't think reaverfan ever expressed this opinion: I am amazed Trump wasn't murdered BEFORE 2016 by one the thousands of people he cheated, but then again, it is amazing no Germans murdered Adolf Hitler.

I bother because I plan a decade ahead in business. Why not four years ahead in politics?
