“I’d be happy to die in this fight. ... This is a fight for everything.”

That’s what Eric Metaxas, a prominent Christian radio host, told President Donald Trump during a radio interview a few weeks after the 2020 election. If the hysteria in those words surprises you, you probably haven’t paid close attention.

Sean Illing: I keep wondering where this goes from here, and it’s not encouraging, David. If the stakes are now that high, if the religious right is fully convinced that their very way of life is on the verge of extinction, then how does this ever stop escalating? Are they not a serious threat to the rule of law in this country?

David French: I have written a lot about how the hardcore Trump evangelical base threatens our constitutional rule of law. People on my side have told me for a long time that I’m exaggerating the threat, that I should stop pearl-clutching. But now we’ve seen a direct violent attack on the US Capitol, on the very seat of American democracy, and it was designed to prevent a peaceful transition of power that was taking place at the exact same time as the attack.

And we’re seeing all across the country bogus attempts to manufacture legal doctrines to overturn a presidential election. People are walking into court with manufactured evidence, with made-up legal doctrines to try to reverse an election. You’re walking into legislatures trying to manufacture a way that they can overturn an election. Then when all that was in the process of failing, they tried to manufacture a revolution to overturn an election. I think that that’s a pretty comprehensive top-to-bottom threat to the rule of law.

Sean Illing: I now live in the Deep South, as you do, and I really don’t think people outside of these areas understand how pervasive this kind of paranoid, alarmist thinking truly is. These are not fringe beliefs. Millions of people are convinced an election was stolen, and if you really believe that, you’re already mentally prepared to justify extreme countermeasures.

1kiki, psychoanalyze Biden. I'm fairly sure (if I haven't lost track of the games these pseudonyms are playing) that 1kiki, Signym, and 6ix are strongly opposed to Biden's immigration policy and methods:

How Biden Is Walking His Talk on Unity

There are roughly 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States today. According to Pew Research, two thirds of them have been in this country for more than 10 years.

Back in 2013, when Congress last considered passing comprehensive immigration reform, the CBO estimated that providing a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants would reduce the federal deficit by $197 billion in the first 10 years and an additional $700 billion in the second decade. Additionally, the Center for American Progress calculated that such reforms would increase the earnings of all American workers by $470 billion over 10 years, increase tax revenue by $109 billion over a decade, and create on average an additional 121,000 jobs per year. Finally, over the next three and a half decades, legalized immigrants would add a net of more than $606 billion to the Social Security system.

When President Biden prioritizes immigration reform, including a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, the arguments in favor of doing so aren't simply about allowing over 11 million people to come out of the shadows. The economic benefits of doing so would redound to all of us.

But even Republicans like Senator Marco Rubio, who once advocated for immigration reform, have already stated that they will not support Biden's plan.

Coming out of the 2012 election, there were still some Republicans who knew that immigration reform was something their party had to embrace. That is why the bipartisan "gang of eight" produced a bill that passed the Senate by a vote of 68-32. As had become typical of these kinds of negotiations, Republicans pressed for massive spending on border security in exchange for a pathway to citizenship for undocumented workers. But the lunatic caucus in the House threatened to oust Rep. John Boehner as speaker if he brought the bill up for a vote. That is how Republicans killed immigration reform in 2013. Three years later, they elected a president who had based much of his campaign on demonizing immigrants.

Long before his first day in office, Biden knew that, having gone full-nativist over the last eight years, Republicans wouldn't support comprehensive immigration reform—even given the economic benefits of doing so. That is why he took a different approach than the one utilized by President Obama.

Biden didn't pre-negotiate with Republicans. He produced his own plan that didn't include massive spending on border security. As Frank Sharry, founder and executive director of America's Voice, told Ron Brownstein, Biden's approach differed in that it recognized that "Republicans demand way too much in the sausage-making and, in the end, still kill off immigration reform." Sharry went on to say that "Biden is presenting a bill that unifies and inspires the entire Democratic coalition. In effect, he's saying, 'Work with me in good faith, Republicans, to get to 60 votes, and if you don't...we'll find a way to get something done with our 51 votes.'"

That is a perfect example of how Biden is walking the talk when it comes to what he means by unity.

Rewarding 11 Million criminals who have been leaching off of our society not only will not bring any unity to this country, but it will just light the fire under the asses of the next 11 Million criminals to come.

I checked that wiki article to see if China trade is all Bill Clinton's fault. If Clinton hadn't been President, would China have been able to export to the USA? It just so happens that it is Ronald Reagan who got the ball rolling:
Quote:

Prior to passage of the bill, China was subject to an annual review by Congress of China's trade status with the United States. Since 1980, the president has had to issue annual waivers to trade with China. The act removed the review, eased some trade barriers, and facilitated China's entry into the WTO.
In 1980, you can blame Reagan for the Chinese economy surpassing America but I blame the Chinese. They try too hard. They should have been lazier and stupider and more disorganized in order for America to continue being the world leader in economic power. There is still one thing America does better than China: America is the World Leader in Covid-19 deaths and infections. We're Number One!

Texas wasn't cooperative with Trump's plan to build a wall because Republicans want cheap illegal laborers. Trump didn't even pretend to have a plan to deport the 11 million illegals, although he had the power and budget to do it. Why didn't he use that power? Because Republican businessmen want cheap illegal laborers, same reason why businessmen don't want a $15/hour minimum wage since that would require paying illegal aliens and citizens $15/hour.

Trump decided that if he can't stop China from manufacturing whatever the Chinese want, Trump can stop Americans from buying. Trump raised tariffs, which raised prices, which discouraged Americans from buying Chinese. But he didn't raise the tariffs and the prices high enough to get the Chinese to move their factories into the USA and hire an all American staff of workers. Why did Trump fail? Because Americans didn't want to pay the price for moving factories back to the USA. Until Americans start paying the full price, the factories won't be in America.

Trump did win.

I'm 100% behind Trump. Trump is a life-long Democrat. Most Republican politicians hated him. Only in the 2020's when Democrats went full retard does Trump not look like a Democrat.

6ix, manufacturing will not move back to the USA unless Americans pay for it. Until then factories will get built in China based on the Chinese being willing to pay when Americans won't:

The US Needs a National Manufacturing Strategy for Semiconductors

President-Elect Joe Biden is getting a lot of advice for his new administration. But he recently received some unexpected input from Bob Swan, the CEO of Intel. In an open letter to the president-elect, Swan urged Biden to pursue a national manufacturing strategy for the U.S. semiconductor industry.

Swan is right. The United States badly needs a new approach to semiconductors. In fact, the Boston Consulting Group recently estimated that the United States needs as much as $50 billion in new investment. As Swan observed, U.S. companies account for half of the world’s microchip designs, but only 12% of global chip manufacturing. And that 12% of production is sure to shrink once China, Taiwan, and other countries invest more in their chip manufacturing capacity. China in particular is investing the staggering sum of $100 billion to build a world-class chip manufacturing industry. And Nikkei recently reported that three new Chinese startups have gone on a hiring spree, wooing engineers from top U.S. firms.

So what should the U.S. do to get back in the semiconductor game?

First, America needs to invest billions of dollars to support existing semiconductor fabrication plants (“fabs”) and build new ones. That includes investment in all the important areas of chipmaking: processors, memory, analog chips, and others.

Second, Washington should incentivize the purchase of American-made chips. A bipartisan bill from Sens. John Cornyn and Mark Warner would help in this direction. However, their legislation does not go far enough. It relies too heavily on corporate tax credits, which would have little impact in the semiconductor industry. The truth is that most U.S. chip companies pay very little in taxes.

The U.S. remains by far the richest country in the world, controlling some $105.99 trillion of wealth, or almost 30% of the entire world’s net worth. Since Americans are not willing to use their 30% to create factory jobs in America, the rest of the world will use their 70% to create factory jobs NOT in America. Trump couldn't change where factories are built because he would NOT spend the money. The Federal Government generously spent $7 trillion to reelect Donald Trump, but that was an unproductive waste of money. Think of how many useful factories the Federal government could pay for with another $7 trillion if American voters would let it happen by issuing $7T in Treasury bonds. But it ain't gonna happen. The voters were okay with Trump squandering money, but will revolt if an equal amount of money was spent for something that would create lasting wealth and jobs and factories.

Secondly, "the government" CAN'T directly invest in building production facilities, THAT ... according to the rules made up by TPTB... would be outright socialism, and "we" can't have that, it's not acceptable to our oligarchy.

That's why I've posted many times that Trump could never "fix" the economy: a President doesn't have the authority to build steel mills and textile mills and chemical plants and chip fabs and cement kilns. All a President can do, under current lines of authority, is tariff imports to make them price- equivalent to USA-made goods, repatriate capital, and cross his or her fingers. A government CAN'T even invest in telecom or power grids or healthcare bc that would be competing with private businesses.

The only wiggle room a President has is to either invest in (some) infrastructure or warmarking machinery.

This is what the article shows:

One of President Donald Trump’s lesser known but profoundly damaging legacies will be the explosive rise in the national debt that occurred on his watch. The financial burden that he’s inflicted on our government will wreak havoc for decades, saddling our kids and grandkids with debt.

The national debt has risen by almost $7.8 trillion during Trump’s time in office. That’s nearly twice as much as what Americans owe on student loans, car loans, credit cards and every other type of debt other than mortgages, combined, according to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. It amounts to about $23,500 in new federal debt for every person in the country.

The growth in the annual deficit under Trump ranks as the third-biggest increase, relative to the size of the economy, of any U.S. presidential administration, according to a calculation by a leading Washington budget maven, Eugene Steuerle, co-founder of the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center. And unlike George W. Bush and Abraham Lincoln, who oversaw the larger relative increases in deficits, Trump did not launch two foreign conflicts or have to pay for a civil war.

. . . federal finances under Trump had become dire even before the pandemic. That happened even though the economy was booming and unemployment was at historically low levels. By the Trump administration’s own description, the pre-pandemic national debt level was already a “crisis” and a “grave threat.”
www.propublica.org/article/national-debt-trump

That article was a test for you, Signym. You are poor because you misunderstand money in profoundly stupid ways.

Trump said he could pay down the national debt, then about $19 trillion, “over a period of eight years” by renegotiating trade deals and spurring economic growth.

After he took office, Trump predicted that economic growth created by the 2017 tax cut, combined with the proceeds from the tariffs he imposed on a wide range of goods from numerous countries, would help eliminate the budget deficit and let the U.S. begin to pay down its debt. On July 27, 2018, he told Sean Hannity of Fox News: “We have $21 trillion in debt. When this [the 2017 tax cut] really kicks in, we’ll start paying off that debt like it’s water.”

Nine days later, he tweeted, “Because of Tariffs we will be able to start paying down large amounts of the $21 trillion in debt that has been accumulated, much by the Obama Administration.”

Just like the deficit, the GINI also went up under Obama.

If there's any icon that needs to be taken off it's pedestal, it's Saint Obama.

Obama signed on to the drastic and politically unpopular plan to directly infuse up to $700 billion in taxpayer-backed loans into the U.S. banking industry. Fast forward a few years and the banks paid back those low-cost loans.

Without providing that liquidity, working capital and credit lines to healthy businesses, big and small, would have dried up. That would have translated into no money for producing products, making payroll, hiring vendors, keeping the lights on and nearly anything else you can think of as essential to operating a company and the economy.

Even a short-term credit disruption could have been devastating.

As a Democrat taking over from a Republican administration, Obama could have made a political calculation to let the opposing party stew in its own troubles. Instead, he realized the country was facing an extraordinary financial crisis and that a massive infusion of cold hard cash from the Federal Reserve, which acts as bank lender of last resort, was the fastest way to break the fever.

It didn't stop with the banks. In the early days of his presidency, Obama also backed an estimated $80 billion bailout of the foundering American auto industry, which ended up saving thousands of jobs throughout the heartland and beyond.

Because of the bailout, the U.S. auto industry retooled, raised efficiency standards and avoided massive shutdowns. (Ultimately, the bailout ended up costing taxpayers about $9 billion, according to the Treasury Department.) The Republican Party would have let those auto factory jobs vanish because those were union jobs and unions support Democrats.

Nobody can guarantee profits like a dictator can! And the US has no qualms about oppressing vast populations as long as it can come to economic terms with the dictators to split the loot.

Such is the zero-sum game of US foreign relations.

Literally, you are an idiot about why factories end up where they do. Funny how the Chinese can move manufacturing to the US, when there is some advantage, but you gotta give them a good reason. Money, typically, is the reason, but the Federal Government is NOT waving around trillion dollar loans to get companies to move. It could, but won't. On the other hand, Chinese money is attracting factories.

On Friday, May 15, the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world’s largest contract chipmaker, announced that it will build a $12 billion plant in Arizona, to open by 2024. It expects the facility to employ roughly 1,600 people and indirectly generate thousands of other jobs.
https://www.technologyreview.com/2020/05/19/1001902/tsmc-chip-plant-an
d-huawei-export-ban-not-trump-win
/

No one has been complaining about the growth of Chinese manufacturing elsewhere in the U.S., either. For at least the past seven years China has been the fastest-growing source of non-domestic business expansion in the U.S. In fact, Chinese foreign direct investment here—that is, the amount of money used to acquire American companies or to build factories and other commercial facilities—reached record levels in 2014, about twelve billion dollars, up from five billion in 2009. Moreover, in the first six months of 2015, Chinese direct investment in the U.S. rose nearly fifty per cent compared with the same period the year before, according to the Rhodium Group, which tracks Asian economies.

Fuyao Glass

A leading glass manufacturer, Fuyao Glass, has invested over $1 billion USD in the US to take advantage of lower costs and better regulations. The company bought out a long-vacant General Motors assembly plant in Moraine, Ohio and is closing in on its goal of employing 3,000 workers there. In an interview with the China Business Network, Chinese billionaire and company founder, Cao Dewang, explained:

Overall speaking, the tax burden for manufacturers in China is 35% higher than in the U.S… Compared with four years ago, labor wages [in China] today have tripled…transportation in the U.S. costs the equivalent of less than one yuan per kilometer, while road tolls [in China] are higher.

Dewang added that cheap land, lower energy prices, and other incentives combine to offset higher manufacturing costs and make it more profitable for Chinese manufacturing companies to manufacture in the US where their products are sold.

Why would a company manufacture shoes in America? Because Americans insist on Made In America? Show me that American consumer. Because the Federal government forbids importation of shoes in order to create American jobs and prevent Americans from walking around barefooted during a War with Asia? I'm not expecting that law anytime soon: The Protect Our Feet in War Act. But if the Federal Government want shoes made in America, it could spend money to make it happen, although that is not gonna happen.

My point exactly! If they manufactured in the US they'd have to give up their 6000% profit!

Moving manufacturing outside of the US is a CORPORATE decision to maximize profit! It has nothing to do with China or the US government, except the US made Chinese sales into the US possible. If it hadn't, and those cheaply-made shoes couldn't be sold here, there would be zero incentive to move manufacturing.

Trump had it right. He couldn't get China kicked out of the WTO, but he COULD impose tariffs!

How surprising that a rich white guy would quote the corporate line.

In reality there was only one large bank Citibank (Shittybank) and one regional one that I know for sure (WAMU) that got caught without their shorts on when the tide went out.

Sheila Bair, then head of the FDIC, who recently wrote her memoirs, had an answer for the crisis: government takeover of Shittybank. Fire mahogany row and straighten it out. Maybe put a few in jail.

Crisis averted. But Obama had other ideas, including shoving money at ALL of the banks to protect the reputations of the ones not deserving of protection.

And meanwhile, not a single banker went to jail, and Glass Steagall never got re-enacted. Instead we got the abortion that was the Sarbanes Oxley Act, and the institutionalization of "bail-in".

So money went to the banks, the economy never really recovered which is why he could never get the deficit to go down, and the wealthy got off scott free.

Thank you, Mr Obama.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Literally every single one of SECOND's posts on this page contains a lie or an evasion - or both.

But now we’ve seen a direct violent attack on the US Capitol, on the very seat of American democracy

One of many violent protests and marches over the centuries.

How Biden Is Walking His Talk on Unity
"Biden is presenting a bill that unifies and inspires the entire Democratic coalition."

I guess REPUBLICANS don't count when it comes to "unity". So long 50% of the American public! You've been written off.

Uh - no - FACTS show it was Clinton.

Republicans want cheap illegal laborers.

But not Trump, apparently ... he was trying to keep cheap labor out.

he didn't raise the tariffs and the prices high enough to get the Chinese to move their factories into the USA and hire an all American staff of workers

Because the Chinese order US corporations to locate their manufacturing wherever the Chinese government decides it should go?? Do you have any idea how demented your claim sounds, SECOND?

manufacturing will not move back to the USA unless Americans pay for it

SECOND posts that corporate profit margins have nothing to do at all with moving manufacturing to extremely cheap labor markets.

The Federal Government generously spent $7 trillion to reelect Donald Trump

Because COVID-19 had nothing to do with it ...

One of President Donald Trump’s lesser known but profoundly damaging legacies will be the explosive rise in the national debt

Just wait till Biden*'s bill come due! OMG. If you believe deficits are the death of the US, Biden*'s will be the final COVID-19 blow to the country.

“over a period of eight years”
Which, as we know, didn't happen. Unless of course you think Trump won?

Obama's track FAILURE had G.W.Bush's train wreck TPTB blocking things.

For EIGHT YEARS?? REALLY??
Maybe it was Obama's FAILURE to fix the real economy - or even address Main Street instead of Wall Street --- or even simply mouth words to pretend he cared about Main Street - that lost him the House, and state governments all across the US - and give rise to a populist.

That would have translated into no money for producing products, making payroll, hiring vendors, keeping the lights on and nearly anything else you can think of as essential to operating a company and the economy. GOOSING THE STOCK MARKET

Funny how the Chinese can move manufacturing to the US, when there is some advantage, but you gotta give them a good reason ...

You mean the Chinese government DOESN'T ORDER manufacturers to move to the US?
Who's making the ultimate decision, SECOND? The Chinese government? Or the business?

SECONDRATE belongs to a cult of one. He has very personal reasons for his twisted hatred of all things Republican.

The measure of how much he hates himself can be found in how much he hates others.

But, yeah: he is just another hater.

The amount of guilt he lives with daily is the only reason I think he at least has some money to his name.

More money = More guilt.

But nobody who has amassed any amount of money beyond what is needed to provide food and shelter for they and theirs ever parts with any of that money, unless there is a personal gain to be made from it.

Second hates himself for what he is. His guilt keeps him up at night.

And rather than do any good with any money he's hoarded, he's happy to continue to collect more and pile more guilt on himself. Projecting his own perceived flaws onto everyone around him, and blaming everybody else in the world except himself for how miserable he feels every day.

Eh, I'm not sure SECOND actually believes what he posts, and belief is the hallmark of cultism. No, he's just throwing any old piece of go se he can find, whether it's consistent with anything else he posts OR NOT; or addresses the topic OR NOT; or is factual OR NOT; or is truthfully represented OR NOT.

Sure, you are an "Independent" that just so happened to be absolutely sure that Trump would win.

Independent! HA!

I hav an interesting idea.

Put American election drop boxez in Russia in 2024. The ballots woud be dezignated 'interested foriner' and only be for Prezident. Each vote woud be worth 1/10 uv a US sitizen'z vote.

It woud at least redoos the motivation behind all theze troll farmerz.

An above board way to release sum pressure. A small step toward international stability.

By the way - I wuz wondering earlier - are there poizon storez in Russia, like we hav gun storez?

Of course he doesn't believe what he posts.

He's not interested in making sense. If he was, he would have made sense of his own behavior a long time ago. He embodies everything that's wrong with Democrats today: a hollow virtue-signalling golem, consumed by guilt and blaming everyone else for his failures. Except, unlike many of the hand-wringing virtue signallers whose sense of guilt was artificially promoted from the outside (guilty for being white, guilty for emitting carbon dioxide, etc) he really DOES have a reason to feel guilty, because he killed people.

And that's something he just can't live with.

And then, instead of being punished by the law or by god for killing people, he got rich. And that added to his feelings of guilt. But he just can't give up the money either, like he can't accept his moral failures ( Thou shalt not kill. I'm sure that was drummed into his head when he was growing up.) so he resolves the issue by blaming everyone but himself for what he's done.

That's why he grabs anything he can and flings it against this wall, whether it makes sense or not.

It's twisted, but I get it.

I don't know enough of JO's history to make sense of his delusion, but I'm going to take a stab at it and say that JO is very bright. But life, and the capitalist economy, hasn't treated him any too kindly or rewarded his cleverness or his abilities in the way that he believes should be natural and inevitable. So instead of reaching the conclusion that the system is cluterfucked and he's a hapless victim of it, he comes to believe that there is a giant conspiracy that is causing our national problems, because there's no way that such a clever man like JO would have come to trust a bogus system or that he would have gotten hoodwinked and victimized by it.
