Should Only the Little People Pay Taxes? Why is the G.O.P. objectively pro-tax evasion?

The Treasury Department believes that there is a “tax gap,” taxes owed but not paid, of more than $500 billion every year; some estimates put the number much higher. And the Biden administration proposes giving the I.R.S. enough resources to reduce this gap as a way to help pay for investment in America’s future.

Republicans negotiating over a possible infrastructure bill ruled out paying for it in part by giving the Internal Revenue Service more resources to go after tax evasion. If the administration goes this route, it will apparently do so with little if any Republican support.

Just to be clear, I’m not surprised to learn that a significant number of senators are sympathetic to the interests of wealthy tax cheats, that they are objectively pro-tax evasion. I am, however, surprised that they are willing to be so open about their sympathies.

There is, after all, a big difference between arguing for low taxes on the rich and arguing, in effect, that rich people who don’t pay what they legally owe should be allowed to get away with it.

One recent estimate is that more than 20 percent of the income of the top 1 percent goes unreported. Republicans opposing stronger tax enforcement are barely even trying to justify themselves, except by bringing up old, long-debunked claims that the I.R.S. targeted conservative groups. Yet they seem determined to defend the privileges of wealthy tax cheats. Why?

Obviously some big tax cheats are also big political donors. What I’d suggest is that the cheats’ clout within the G.O.P. has actually increased as the party has gotten crazier.

There have always been wealthy Americans who dislike the right’s embrace of racial hostility and culture wars but have been willing to swallow their distaste as long as Republicans keep their taxes low. But as the G.O.P. has become more extreme — as it has become the party of election lies and violent insurrection — who among the wealthy is still willing to make that trade-off?

Some rich Americans have always been right-wing radicals. But as for the rest, the party’s base within the donor class presumably consists increasingly of those among the wealthy with the fewest scruples and the least concern for their reputations — who are precisely the kind of people most likely to engage in blatant tax evasion.

Biden understands that in an unregulated market, the first thing successful competitors will do is subvert competition. That’s why, earlier this month, he signed an executive order to tighten enforcement of antitrust laws, facilitate drug importation, require companies to disclose more information for comparison shoppers, and restrict anti-competitive employment, rental, and consumer contracts. The point of the executive order, he explained on Monday, was to promote “fair and open competition … the cornerstone of American capitalism” by helping new businesses take on “giant corporations who have been free to ramp up prices because they haven’t had any real competition.”

If any of this were true, you wouldn't see every big corporation blowing the Democratic Party and spewing their poisonous "Progressive" ideology all over the internet.

The Democrat Party is the Party of the rich people.

6ix, you lost touch with reality long time ago.

It would be an understatement to call Steve Weinberg “left-of-center.” He believed in higher taxes on rich people like himself to service a robust social safety net. When Trump won, Steve remarked to me that most of the disgusting and outrageous things Trump would do could be reversed in a generation or so — but not the aggressive climate change denial; that actually could matter on the scale of centuries. Steve made the news in Austin for openly defying the Texas law forcing public universities to allow concealed carry on campus: he said that, regardless of what the law said, firearms would not be welcome in his classrooms. (Louise, Steve’s wife for 67 years and a professor at UT Austin’s law school, also wrote perhaps the definitive scholarly takedown of the shameful Bush vs. Gore Supreme Court decision, which installed George W. Bush as president.)

Dan Price @DanPriceSeattle

Want to cut taxes for regular people? I have a simple idea.

Every year the rich owe $554 billion in taxes they illegally never pay.

If we just enforced IRS laws to collect that money, we could cut every taxpayer's tax bill by $3,800 a year.

Why does the GOP oppose this?

The millions of Trumptards in America should follow your example and stay home from work to show that business can't continue without them. Trumptards will discover that is not true. Business does continue without them.

The latest Firefly comic illustrates that particularly well using old Browncoats.

I'm doing just fine, buddy.

Unless Biden*'s inflation fucks everything up, I got enough for the bare essentials for at least 5 or 6 years without having to do a damn thing I don't want to do.

I'm also 4 years, 7 months and somewhere around 25 or 26 days sober. Not that I'm counting, mind... It's just easy to remember since I started whenever I woke up from my 2016 New Years Eve bender.

Drinking is the last thing in the world I would ever do.

And if you don't believe anything else I've ever said here, do believe that there is nothing a little turd like you could ever say or do to drive me to drink.

Wrong: “Trump will be fine.” - 6ix. Correct: Trump will be dead. Trump has been asking advisers in recent weeks if he could somehow reassume the presidency this year after listening to farfetched suggestions from conservative commentators and allies. Trump's fantasy is hopelessly insane. American politicians do not lose their reelection races only to be reinstalled later on, as might the second-place horse in a race whose winner was disqualified. The idea is otherworldly and obscene.

I'm going to do you a solid and not consider this another death threat going on the list.

That being said, what you followed it up with in no way relates to your assertion that Trump will be dead.

Also, I didn't say shit about Trump being President later this year. He's just trolling you, idiot.

He will be reelected in 2024 after Biden* sinks the economy and keeps letting 200k Illegal Aliens into the country every month to make up for the fact that absolutely nobody is having any fuckin' kids right now because they're starting to get a glimpse of it and they're absolutely terrified of the Democrat's Future.

Vaccines that don't work. Possible nationwide lockdowns again for who the hell knows how long... Maybe forever... Like the war in the Middle East that's never going to fucking end? No houses that are affordable. Inflation up everyones asses. Opioid/Meth use skyrocketing. Crime spilling out from Democrat ran shitholes after the unemployment bonuses dry up and people start being kicked out on the streets when the CDC mandated rent moratorium comes to an end. And no fucking cops anywhere because they've all been defunded.

That's what you and Ted voted for, dummy.

I hope you're proud of yourselves.

Maybe we can do the regular go-to Democrat/NeoCon stand-by and start more illegal wars to keep our minds off of all of it? Because we sure as hell don't want to ingest any of the Woke bullshit entertainment in 2021.

Trump's 75. It's a bit late for him to have an early death.

Your posts are getting more and more bizarre, like the one where you sententiously (used in the pejorative sense) claimed Trump will die. Of course he will. We all will.

We used to have a joke about those kind of statements. We'd call them "the lampshade is red" statements, said with all the serious sanctimoniousness one can muster.

You OK? Having an evolving stroke now? Or had one recently?

As a 75 year old, Trump has to live another 11.2 years or else he will have died early. Check out "Table 15. Life expectancy at birth, at age 65, and at age 75, by sex, race, and Hispanic origin: United States, selected years 1900–2016"

https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/hus/2017/015.pdf

The way Trump lives, I don't think he has 11.2 years more left in life. The next time, Walter Reed Medical Center won't be available to pull Trump back from the brink of death when he catches a disease that he would not catch if he hadn't acted like a complete fool. Trump’s Chief Of Staff Feared President Was Going To Die When He Had Covid was a recent headline.

1kiki, if you were really an American, you would know about the long life of other Americans. On the other hand, if you were a Russian Troll, a country where white males die young, then 75 year old Trump seems like he lived a very long time. At this moment, a Russian male will live to be 68.

We'll see who's crazy buddy.

For a few weeks in 1992, U.S. politics were all about “family values.” President George H.W. Bush was in electoral trouble because of a weak economy and rising inequality. So his vice president, Dan Quayle, tried to change the subject by a crazy attack on Murphy Brown, a character in a TV sitcom, an unmarried woman who chose to have a child.

I was reminded of that incident when I read about recent crazy remarks by J.D. Vance, the author of “Hillbilly Elegy,” who is now a Republican Senate candidate in Ohio. Vance noted that some prominent Democrats don’t have children, and he lashed out at the “childless left.” He also praised the policies of Viktor Orban, the leader of Hungary, whose government is subsidizing couples who have children, and asked, “Why can’t we do that here?”

As The Washington Post’s Dave Weigel, who was there, pointed out, it was odd that Vance didn’t mention Joe Biden’s newly instituted child tax credit, which will make an enormous difference to many poorer families with children.

It was also interesting that he praised Hungary rather than other European nations with strong pronatalist policies. France, in particular, offers large financial incentives to families with children and has one of the highest fertility rates in the advanced world. So why did crazy Vance single out for praise a repressive, autocratic government with a strong white nationalist bent?

That was a rhetorical question.

Interestingly, there's a definition for "early death" aka "premature mortality".

I was going to post it - and the link - but you won't read it.

And yes, Trump's old enough that no mater when he dies from now on, it's too late to call it an early death.

Speaking of nationality, are you a US citizen yet? Have you figured out the Constitution - yanno, electoral college, innocent until proven guilty, freedom of speech, and all those Constitutional specifics that as a natural born US citizen I cherish and abide by, but which you hate?

I was going to post it - and the link - but you won't read it.

And yes, Trump's old enough that no mater when he dies from now on, it's too late to call it an early death.

Speaking of nationality, are you a US citizen yet? Have you figured out the Constitution - yanno, electoral college, innocent until proven guilty, freedom of speech, and all those Constitutional specifics that as a natural born US citizen I cherish and abide by, but which you hate?

You really are a Russian Troll, 1kiki. And hurry with that promised link.

To repeat: As a 75 year old, Trump has to live another 11.2 years or else he will have died early.

1kiki's "innocent until proven guilty" is of interest to Trump in his tax evasion. The IRS wants Trump to pay back taxes, while jailing him is of far less importance to the IRS. The IRS will probably take Trump to Civil court, rather than criminal court. Why? The courts have held the due process clauses of the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments also ensure that you will not be convicted of a crime unless the prosecutor proves that you are guilty “beyond a reasonable doubt.” This high burden of proof in criminal cases is closely related to the presumption of innocence, ensuring you receive a fair trial.

In civil cases, such as Trump not paying his taxes, the standard is much lower. In such cases, the standard of proof is “preponderance of the evidence.” This generally means the jury believes it is more likely than not that the defendant did what the other side says they did . . . TRUMP DID NOT PAY HIS TAXES.

In civil trials, Trump has to show he paid his taxes. The IRS only has to show Trump did not pay. There is none of the nonsense that happens in Criminal trials about whether Trump is crazy, or sane enough to stand trial, or what his intentions were when he signed his Form 1040. Getting Trump to pay or his corporations to pay back taxes is all mathematics, and pretty simple math, too!

Meanwhile, have you decided to accept the Constitution as the US law of the land yet? 1kiki, you are referring to "Trends in Years of Potential Life Lost Before Age 65 (YPLL-65) Among Whites and Blacks -- United States, 1979-1989"

Let me quote half of one line to give you a clue about what is wrong about this paper for the purpose you are trying to use it for, which is proving that Trump, at 75, has already outlived the average American lifetime:
Quote:

From 1979 to 1989, the rate of YPLL-65 (per 1000 population) decreased for white males (from 76.3 to 65.3 [14.4%]).

Translation into English: In 1979, 1,000 white males lost 76.3 years of life because of unintentional injuries, heart disease, malignant neoplasms, homicide, suicide and HIV infection.

Besides not being relevant, 1kiki, the paper is from November 27, 1992. You wasted your time, 1kiki, with this old paper that is not even about how long the average American lives. Instead, use Table 015: Life expectancy at birth, at age 65, and at age 75, by sex, race, and Hispanic origin: United States, selected years 1900–2016
https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/hus/contents2017.htm#015

If Trump dies before 2033, twelve years from now, he is dying before his time. By the way, he came close to death from Covid-19, but the White House staff forced him into the helicopter, which flew to Walter Reed Medical Center. Next time, the decision will not be made by the White House staff. Maybe Trump will end up dead because he is stupid.

You only think the link is meaningless because you're lazy or inept or both.

The concept and calculations from that link are referenced everywhere - from governments trying to figure out what kills young people nationally, to health experts trying to figure out the global state of health of a country and/ or compare it to other countries, to insurance companies trying to calculate the loss of income due to an early death, to disease experts trying to figure out shortened lifespans due to specific diseases, and even by statisticians trying to figure out COVID-19's mortality.

Quote:

https://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/about/foundation-health-measures/Ge
neral-Health-Status

Healthy People 2020 tracks healthy life expectancy using 3 measures ...
YPLL (years of potential life lost) is based on the number of deaths at each age up to some limit. For example, in the United States, the age limit is often placed at 75, so people who die before age 75 are defined as having lost some potential years of life.

Which still means NOT TRUMP.

1kiki, I knew plenty of dead Trumptards who behave as if being stupid does not kill. There were fat Trumptards, fat like Trump, who are dead because they were fat. Then there are dead Trumptard who are dead because they won't get vaccinated. Then there are dead Trumptards who are dead because they kept a gun around the house for personal protection. It is not just that dead Trumptards were stupid to vote for Trump, but Trumptards are stupid about everything, which then killed them. I know Trumptards do their very best to not understand the connection between living stupidly and dying before their time. 1kiki, you are doing are great job of not understanding. Banning Jim Jordan Saved the House Investigation. For the first time in years, there was no deranged counter-narrative being interjected every five minutes.

The first hearing of the January 6 Select Committee contained harrowing accounts from four law enforcement officers about the physical, emotional, and racial abuse they suffered that day — and served as an indictment of Republicans who have spent recent months trying to downplay the insurrection and deflect criticism.

One of the main themes of Tuesday’s hearing was that the January 6 attack on the Capitol was a really big deal — one that imperils the future of American democracy. DC police officer Michael Fanone drove that point home during perhaps the most memorable moment of the proceedings, pounding on a table as he alluded to the disinterest of GOP leadership like House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who is boycotting the committee: “The indifference shown to my colleagues is disgraceful,” he said.

“Nothing has prepared me to address those elected members of our government who continue to deny the events of that day and in doing so betray their oath of office,” Fanone added.

Fanone, who like the other officers was appearing in his personal capacity, later detailed how he was beaten unconscious by rioters and pleaded for his life by telling them, “I’ve got kids!”

Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN), went on Fox News as soon as Tuesday’s hearing ended and shrugged it off as “scripted by Nancy Pelosi.”

While Republicans like Banks have sought to shift the focus from how Trump and his supporters encouraged the insurrection to law enforcement failures that contributed to the Capitol being overrun, the officers who testified on Tuesday linked Trump’s rhetoric to the unrest. They urged the select committee to focus on the bigger picture.

“The rioters that attempted to reach the Capitol were shouting, ‘Trump sent us,’” said US Capitol Police Sgt. Aquilino Gonell: “I recall thinking to myself, ‘This is how I’m gonna die.’”

I think the answer for that is simple: a low-interest government loan program to pay off the ridiculous private student loan debt. The government makes money, and the people in debt get out from under more easily. And everyone is happy, except the lender-leeches. But hey, if they haven't lost actual money, they should be happy, too.

(That's exactly the same way I think the government should have addressed the 2008 collapse. Fix the underlying mortgages instead of making the 10,000x leveraged pyramid of lenders whole.)

You can’t know if a policy was worthwhile if you don’t know how much it costs. Ask three people their opinion of the U.S. government’s bailouts during the 2008 financial crisis, and you’ll likely get three different answers.

The total direct cost of crisis-related bailouts on a fair value basis was about $498 billion, which amounted to 3.5 percent of gross domestic product in 2009.

One thing to know for a fact - unleveraged money is always cheaper than leveraged money.

And in the meantime, all while shoring up financialism, roughly 10 MILLION homeowners lost their homes. https://www.marketplace.org/2018/12/17/what-we-learned-housing/

All that could have been avoided at reduced cost if the government had directly provided alternative mortgages.

All that could have been avoided at reduced cost if the government had directly provided alternative mortgages.

The deal is that there are about 80 million single family houses in America and about 70 million of those homeowners objected to helping, either with their own money or with government money, the 10 million homeowners who lost their homes, which is why the American government did not, cannot, and will not in future help. That 70 million would be confused and angry that they are not getting at least as much help as the 10 million who really need it, which is why no homeowners got help.

On the other hand, the politicians were being told loud and clear that Armageddon had arrived TODAY by Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), Federal Housing Authority (FHA), Federal Reserve, Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC), Small Business Lending Fund (SBLF).

That's why totally focused Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac got help while confused, unfocused, disorganized homeowners got nothing.

The answer is to change their loans to 0% interest, and for the government to take the missing money from that interest from the colleges themselves.

The caveat being, that they only get the 0% interest if they make their full monthly payment on time every month, otherwise it goes back to whatever rate it was before the forgiveness and they will have to make 1 full year of on-time, in-full payments to get back to the 0% interest.

THEN the government should be doing a deep dive into why it costs so fucking much to get what amounts to a worthless piece of paper for 80% of the recipients, and fire everybody responsible in both the education system and the government itself who is even indirectly responsible for it.

In NO way should these loans be forgiven. They should be examples to the future generations of how these people were suckered into throwing so much money away and enslaving themselves to debt for the rest of their lives.

I wasn't just talking about making low interest home loans available to people in default. I meant to everybody.

No matter how you look at it, everybody wins. The 'financialism' section of the economy has the basis for its leveraged 'assets' stabilized. The homeowners scrape off the leeches. And the government makes money.

1kiki wants 0% mortgages. 6ix wants 0% student loans. I want 0% payday loans. Why can't we have it all? I know the reason for payday loans not being 0%: Payday loans can have interest rates over 600%—here’s the typical rate in every U.S. state.

You're out of your goddamned mind if you think I want 0% student loans.

That's the comporomise I'm willing to give instead of letting Democrats forgive over a trillion dollars of student loan debt, but only if the ones paying back the loans make on time payments in full every month and only if the Government puts a stop to the predatory system in place.

Use your imagination for why there aren't 61 U.S. Senators voting for 0% loans of all kinds. And while you are at it, try to imagine why even state legislatures aren't offering 0% loans. The Legislatures say that this is perfectly legal: Multi-Payment Installment Loan Fee Schedule

Nobody but you wants 0% anything, Commie.

You know who else threw around accusations of Communism? People who voted for Nixon. I've got particular people mind, their names, their history, what eventually happened to those people. Most of them are dead, but the few who were in high school in 1972 that aren't yet dead from smoking, voted for Trump. Every last one has done worse than average, because of their bad judgment and laziness, but they think their weaknesses are because of the Democrats. Those Trump voters were delusional about Nixon, delusional about Trump, and are delusional about themselves. So who was Nixon that these Trumptards would have voted for if only they had bothered to vote?

King Richard: Nixon and Watergate – an American Tragedy
By Michael Dobbs

Does the world need another history of the Watergate scandal? If it’s this good, yes. Michael Dobbs’s tense facto-thriller covers the first hundred days of Richard Nixon’s second administration, from the triumph of re-election to the moment when things ‘fell apart’ in mid-1973. Dobbs stalks the president around the White House, watching and listening – much like the taping system Nixon installed to protect his reputation but that, in the end, destroyed it. We hear him make bigoted comments and plot to conceal the truth, as well as lie to the faces of men he professes to love – and to himself as well.

Tricky Dick probably didn’t order the burglary at the Democratic headquarters at the Watergate Hotel on 17 June 1972: responsibility lay with the Committee for the Re-election of the President, which was separate from the White House. The committee could easily have been thrown under the bus in the early days of the scandal. Instead, Nixon pursued a cover-up, all the while warning his staff that the worst thing to do when you’ve done something wrong is cover it up.

The inconsistency isn’t as strange as it first sounds. Nixon’s modus operandi was to encourage others to do bad things on his behalf and maintain enough distance from the wrongdoing to deny all personal responsibility. But by the time his counsel John Dean sat down with him on 21 March 1973 and informed him that there was a ‘cancer on the presidency’, Nixon must have known that the metaphor had become horribly apt, given how much crookedness, involving so many people, had built up over so long. He also knew that all it would take was one exposure to sink the entire administration. Nixon joked to his staff that they needn’t worry: America wouldn’t impeach him because that would put Spiro Agnew, his ghastly vice president, in charge. What he didn’t know was that Agnew was being quietly investigated for corruption and would soon have to quit.

The tapes made a certain sense: other presidents taped themselves too and Nixon, bedevilled by leaks and negative press, wanted an honest record of what was said and done. The problem was, however, that what the president said wasn’t always true. Why, when their existence came to light on 13 July, didn’t Nixon do the obvious thing and destroy the tapes? ‘Boss, you gotta have a bonfire,’ said Agnew. Almost everyone Nixon spoke to agreed, except Haldeman, who argued that they could prove the president was innocent. This was what Nixon wanted to hear, so that’s what Nixon chose to believe. The tapes, he declared on 17 July, were his ‘insurance … Those tapes are going to defend me.’ Later in the day, the special prosecutor requested access to eight recordings, including the ‘cancer on the presidency’ conversation. That night, Nixon wrote in his diary: ‘Should have destroyed the tapes.’

Dobbs’s book combines clarity, amusement and tragedy, opening up the Watergate story, perhaps, to a younger generation of readers who might imagine that Trump is as bad as it gets. ‘Nixon’s thirst for political intelligence’, he concludes, ‘had spawned a “whatever it takes” culture that led to massive lawbreaking by his administration’, with advisers careening off beyond the law in ways that are, in retrospect, almost unbelievable. Nixon encouraged them. He also betrayed them, though not, I think, because he was sociopathic but because he was all too human. Nixon could have killed the scandal if he’d been truly cold-hearted and decisive from the moment the story broke. Instead, he flapped about self-pityingly for a hundred sad days – not an evil genius but an ordinary man haunted by his mistakes.

I tried this Watergate Tapes conversation on people who voted for Trump. None of them sensed wrongness about killing civilians:

The two men turned to the practical question of building support for Nixon’s Vietnam policy in the weeks that followed. Colson confidently expected the furor over the Christmas bombing to be forgotten as soon as the peace agreement was signed. He rattled off a stream of opinion polls to bolster his argument that the antiwar crowd was out on a “big limb” that was about to get “sawed off.”

“The important thing to remember, Mr. President, is that the country does not buy a lot of the crap that they’re fed. Obviously the American people have an uncomfortable sense about the bombings and wish they had not taken place. But sixty-seven [percent] do not believe that we deliberately bombed hospitals or civilian targets.”

“Good God,” Nixon exploded. “When you think of what Eisenhower did in World War II. I mean, he decimated cities.”

“So did Truman.”

“Why did Truman drop the atomic bomb? Not because he wanted to demolish cities. Because he wanted to end the war. Why did Eisenhower bomb the shit out of the cities of North Korea?”

“That’s right.”

“And that’s what ended the war, you know.”

Colson could not wait to “slash the bejusus” out of the Nixon critics and the “jackasses” in Congress who had proposed holding up funding for the war.

“It’s treasonable,” Nixon exclaimed.

“Totally treasonable,” Colson agreed. “We’ll cut the bastards right to the bone.”

In the meantime, he had a nugget of good news to relay. His campaign against The Washington Post for its aggressive coverage of Watergate was showing gratifying results. He had orchestrated challenges to the renewal of the parent company’s lucrative television licenses in Florida. Its stock price had plummeted by more than 25 percent in the last two weeks alone. Nervous investors were demanding the firing of the editor, Ben Bradlee. Colson had made clear that the price for calling off his attack dogs was “a complete change of management.” To show good faith, the Post would be required to publish “a few obviously friendly editorials on how well the President is handling the Vietnam War” and put “the Watergate case back inside the paper where it belongs instead of blasting it across the front pages.”

Since you didn't get the point, I'll take the liberty of elaboration...

I'm not worried about what Nixon did before I was born.

I'm worried about what Biden* is doing now.

To make a point that you can't accept, I've never known anyone who voted twice for Trump, and continues to support him, who is not crazy and stupid. They are forever bragging about how smart they are and about their commonsense, but they don't have either, at least going by watching what they do in the real world. Perhaps there are some who are either sane or smart, but there can't be many of them.

I find there is an overlap between two-time-Trump supporters and people who support what Nixon supported, such as killing civilians as a essential strategy in, for example, WWII and Vietnam. The commonly held belief that nuking Japan won the war is a dead giveaway that they believe in the strategy of killing civilians.

There is also an overlap with believing Biden is somebody to be worried about. They worry about the silliest things while being completely oblivious to important things.

Obliviousness is the key to what is wrong with two-time-Trump supporters. It's the key to why they struggle so hard with staying in the middle class and voted for Trump, the guy who tells them their struggles are not their fault, but Biden's fault or the Democrats' fault or the Elite's fault. Again, I don't know enough to be sure, but every two-time-Trump supporter I do know is solely at fault.
