Both the 2016 GOP Platform and Trump promised a replacement for Obamacare, but nothing even got written down on paper, let alone passed into law. Trump baited, hooked, and landed small fry voters with that promise. But it is always "whatever" with him and the GOP. They didn't try to deliver anything to replace Obamacare.

This past weekend, the Republican National Committee caved to white supremacist and other hate groups by adopting a resolution titled Refuting the Legitimacy of the Southern Poverty Law Center to Identify Hate Groups.

The focus of the resolution is that “the SPLC is a radical organization” that harms conservative organizations and voices through our hate group designations.

This attack on our work is an attempt to excuse the Trump administration’s pattern and practice of working with individuals and organizations that malign entire groups of people — immigrants, Muslims and the LGBTQ community — while promoting policies that undermine their very existence. It comes from the same vein as Trump’s claim that there were “very fine people” on both sides of the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville.

Simply put, it’s an audacious attempt by Trump and the GOP to paper over the bigotry and racism that has been allowed to infect their policies.

This resolution comes at a moment when Trump will argue at the Republican National Convention that he will combat hate and bigotry, despite welcoming the support of QAnon. It also comes days after the indictment of Stephen Bannon, reminding us that Bannon was once the White House chief strategist and senior counselor and CEO of Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. And it comes just after our special investigation shined a light on One America News Network’s Jack Posobiec, a reporter at Trump’s favorite network who is aligned with white supremacy and has used his platform to further hate speech and propaganda.

Trump should sever these ties to hate groups and extremists instead of doubling down through this RNC resolution.

The Trump administration has filled its ranks and consulted with alumni and allies from the Federation for American Immigration Reform, an anti-immigrant hate group that has ties to white supremacist groups and eugenicists. They include Julie Kirchner, Kris Kobach, Jeff Sessions and, most notably, Stephen Miller.

The Trump administration has worked with hate groups like the Family Research Council (FRC) to roll back LGBTQ rights. FRC was designated an anti-LGBTQ hate group for decades of demonizing LGBTQ people and spreading harmful pseudoscience about them. Over the years, the organization has published books, reports and brochures that have linked being LGBTQ to pedophilia, claimed that LGBTQ people are dangerous to children and claimed that LGBTQ people are promiscuous and violent.

Anti-Muslim groups have also been welcomed into the administration, including the Center for Security Policy (CSP). Fred Fleitz, a longtime staffer, was appointed the executive secretary and chief of staff of the National Security Council. For decades, CSP has peddled absurd accusations that shadowy Muslim Brotherhood operatives have infiltrated all levels of government.

These extremists are seeking a license to continue spreading their bigotry and will do anything to undermine those — like the SPLC, which tracks and monitors hate groups — who expose their extremist views and oppose their attacks on communities. With this resolution, Trump and members of the GOP have shown the extent to which they will carry their water.

This past weekend, the RNC also released a resolution titled Resolution to Conserve History and Combat Prejudice – Christopher Columbus. It’s a remarkably transparent statement that hate and bigotry stem from Black Lives Matter protesters. The RNC and Trump did not denounce organizations that promote antisemitism, Islamophobia, neo-Nazis, anti-LGBTQ sentiment or racism. It only criticized the SPLC for challenging those groups.

Why this former Republican says the party must be burned to the ground

Of all the “Never Trumpers,” Stuart Stevens might be the most interesting.

Stevens is one of the most successful GOP operatives in the last couple of decades. He helped lead several presidential campaigns (notably George W. Bush’s two campaigns and Mitt Romney’s failed bid in 2012) and multiple gubernatorial and congressional races. He’s as seasoned as they come in Republican politics.

But Stevens stands out among Trump’s conservative critics because of his candor about the deeper rot at the core of the GOP. And in a new tell-all book, called It Was All a Lie: How the Republican Party Became Donald Trump, he offers a grand mea culpa for his own role in paving the way for Trumpism. “It is a strange, melancholy feeling to turn sixty-five, and realize that what you have spent a good portion of your life working for and toward was not only meritless but also destructive,” Stevens writes.

I spoke to Stevens by phone about the story he wanted to tell in this book and why he insists that “Donald Trump did not change the Republican Party as much as he gave the party permission to reveal its true self.” Then we discuss which Republicans, in his words, “bamboozled” him by pretending to care about conservative principles only to toss them out the window the second it was convenient to do so.
Quote:

I say the Republican Party really isn’t a political party. It’s a cartel. Why do cartels exist? Why does OPEC exist? To sell oil. Nobody says, “What is the moral purpose of OPEC?” What does the Republican Party exist for now at the federal level? To beat Democrats —that’s it. There’s nothing else. There is no policy.

Say what you will about Elizabeth Warren, she can at least articulate a theory of government. You can hate it or you can love it, but you can argue with it and she’ll defend it. Can anybody do that on the right with any credibility? I don’t think I’ve seen anything like it. I compare it to the collapse of the Communist Party in the Soviet Union, where the gap between reality and what the party was saying was so massive that it collapsed. I think we’re watching the collapse of the Republican Party. Actually, I know we are.

Exactly what did Trump burn down? He didn't raise taxes on the wealthy. He should have burned the wealthy. He didn't deport 24 million illegal aliens who are still here. He should have burned them. He didn't move jobs from China back to America. He should have burned China. He didn't reduce the amount of money insurance companies, doctors and hospitals are charging. He should have burned them. He makes huge promises but does not deliver results, including Covid-19, an example of failing to burn the virus.

DEMOCRATS: this is what you do when you're out of ideas on how to represent Americans.

Pelosi Calls Republicans 'Domestic Enemies Of The State'

This is the logical outcome of your racist and sexist exploitation of 'identity politics' that divides the country. Because you absolutely CAN NOT cross your big money donors to make life better for all. THIS is a reprise of Hillary's 'basket of deplorables' in flyover country.

KEEP IT UP DEMOCRATS. Keep writing people off who have real economic distress until you have no one left to claim as your own.

She's 100% correct. They have become mask-off fascists.

The entire party has pledged their undying support to Trump. They have no platform, whatsoever. They simply worship their "dear leader." Who PEOPLE LISTEN TO because they and their problems have been so disenfranchised, demeaned, and dismissed ...

... by international corporate interests who are now running the so-called democratic party ...

... that they had literally no where else to go.

ETA: I've been pondering the failure of the Tea Party for a while, because Trump vanquished a whole slate of them during the primaries.

The whole notion that Trump won just because republicans are racist, sexist, xenophobic pigs was disproven by the 2016 primaries. The Tea Party already had that territory covered in every shade of discrimination you can imagine, with 'small government-mania' as an extra. What it never did was address the economic malaise of working people, and of the country, because they too were - and are - beholden to their big-money donors. THAT's what put Trump over the top in the primaries and the general election. It wasn't the culture war issues, it was the bad economy, that nobody else was addressing.

Until democrats get their act together (assuming they ever clue in, that is) and AT LEAST pay better-sounding lip-service to people's economic distresses, the democrats will continue to fail.

In the meantime, that the democrats are STILL staking their viability on identity politics - at least we're not republicans - or TRUMP! - is a big mistake. Many people see NOT being Trump as the problem, not the solution.

Democrats need to focus on the problems that matter to people, and their blame-free white-wash weak-tea "Build Back Better" that doesn't identify the causes of economic distress isn't going to cut it.

Do you want to know what doing a good job will get the Democratic Party from a grateful America?

I will show you:

November 8, 1938 Democrats lose 8 seats in the Senate.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1938_United_States_Senate_elections

November 5, 1940 Democrats lose 3 seats in the Senate.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1940_United_States_Senate_elections

November 3, 1942 Democrats lose 8 seats.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1942_United_States_Senate_elections

November 7, 1944 Democrats lose 1 seat. Hitler and Hirohito are almost done.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1944_United_States_Senate_elections

November 5, 1946 Democrats lose 11 seats, lose the Senate, but won WWII.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1946_United_States_Senate_elections

America turned control back over to Herbert Hoover’s Republicans a little bit at a time. That is how grateful America was to FDR’s Democrats for doing a good job.

By December 1, 1950, Nixon will be California’s Senator. He will be Vice President until 1961. Then President. We know what a super job Nixon did and how that story ends, don’t we?

The facts are: democrats did nothing for the average worker during the Obama presidency; Hillary and the DNC were all about identity politics as long as you had the right identity; Pelosi as the single most visible representative of democrats in the last 4 years has made the democrats all about being anti-Donald; and the party platform of today is meaningless happy-talk without a commitment to identify and solve the causes of the average American's economic malady.

Democrats can't even pay decent lip service to ordinary Americans and their economic misfortunes.

No amount of Trump-demonizing is going to change the perception that democrats can't even pretend to address our economy that's failed everyday Americans.

So, to get back to what Trump is doing that democrats seem completely blind to - he's got Jerome Powell and Steve Mnuchin on the line to pump up the stock market, because politically, he can't afford a crash. Democrats will be facing the headwind of a good stock market and the normalcy and stability that projects (no matter how bad the fundamentals).

What Americans do is switch back and forth between parties because they are bored. The Democrats win WWII, but Americans are so bored with war that 11 Democratic Senators are replaced with Republicans. Americans got bored with the slow recovery from the Depression and they started replacing Democratic Senators with Republicans, who were the very people causing the Depression.

Americans are NOT judging how well one party was doing when they switch to supporting the other party. Americans just switch because they are tired and the other side promised that this time would be nothing like the last time they were in control. Back and forth control goes between the two parties while most Americans can't even remember the characteristics are different between the two parties. And most stunning, almost no Americans can remember that it takes not 51 Senators, but at least 60 Senators, in some cases 67 Senators, to get anything important passed. The Senate was designed to make sure major legislation does not pass but once in a generation when one party has a super-majority.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Not sure why you're so stuck on pretending that Congress = the Senate, or that the US government = Congress.

Here's a complete picture.

Until you decide to address the complete picture, with all the dates it covers as well as the the complete legislative branch plus the executive branch, I don't see a point in discussing the "American voter" any further.

Until you decide to address the complete picture, with all the dates it covers as well as the the complete legislative branch plus the executive branch, I don't see a point in discussing the "American voter" any further.

Your "Complete" picture is not complete. You forgot to include the voters, where about 67% of them live in a demon-haunted world. That 2/3rds of voters are randomly jerking around their steering of the direction the country goes, first jerking the wheel to the left, than back to the right, over-and-over. By the way, there is a book about that called

Fantasyland: How America Went Haywire – A 500 Year History

By my reckoning, the more or less solidly reality-based are a minority, maybe a third of us but almost certainly fewer than half. Only a third of us, for instance, believe with some certainty that CO2 emissions from cars and factories are the main cause of Earth’s warming. Only a third are sure the tale of creation in Genesis is not a literal, factual account. Only a third strongly disbelieve in telepathy and ghosts.

Two-thirds of Americans believe that “angels and demons are active in the world.” At least half are absolutely certain Heaven exists, ruled over by a personal God—not some vague force or universal spirit but a guy. More than a third of us believe not only that global warming is no big deal but that it’s a hoax perpetrated by a conspiracy of scientists, government, and journalists.

A third believe that our earliest ancestors were humans just like humans today; that the government has, in league with the pharmaceutical industry, hidden evidence of “natural” cancer cures; that extraterrestrials have recently visited (or now reside on) Earth.

A quarter believe vaccines cause autism and that Donald Trump won the popular vote in the 2016 general election. A quarter believe that our previous president was (or is?) the Antichrist. A quarter believe in witches. Remarkably, no more than one in five Americans believe the Bible consists mainly of legends and fables—around the same number who believe that “the media or the government adds secret mind-controlling technology to television broadcast signals” and that U.S. officials were complicit in the 9/11 attacks.

When I say that a third believe X or a quarter believe Y, it’s important to understand that those are different thirds and quarters of the U.S. population. Various fantasy constituencies overlap and feed each other—for instance, belief in extraterrestrial visitation and abduction can lead to belief in vast government cover-ups, which can lead to belief in still more wide-ranging plots and cabals, which can jibe with a belief in an impending Armageddon involving Jesus. Fantasyland operates like the European Union, a collection of disparate domains of various sizes overlaid with a Schengen Area that allows citizens of any of the dozens of lands to travel freely among the others, the way Hungarians and Maltese can visit France or Iceland at will.

Why are we like this?

That’s what this book will explore. The short answer is because we’re Americans, because being American means we can believe any damn thing we want, that our beliefs are equal or superior to anyone else’s, experts be damned. Once people commit to that approach, the world turns inside out, and no cause-and-effect connection is fixed. The credible becomes incredible and the incredible credible.

I took Kiki on faith. Furthermore, it doesn't matter, because it gets the point across. Yanno, the one that you, yourself brought up in the very next sentence here:

No shit they do. THAT'S THE POINT THAT YOU MISSED IN THE POST THAT KIKI TROLLED YOU ON HERE:

America turned control back over to Herbert Hoover’s Republicans a little bit at a time. That is how grateful America was to FDR’s Democrats for doing a good job.

By December 1, 1950, Nixon will be California’s Senator. He will be Vice President until 1961. Then President. We know what a super job Nixon did and how that story ends, don’t we?

And now for extensive actual quotes from the author, where instead of 'picking apart' my argument, he actually AGREES with me:
Quote:

For those past two decades, I’d prospered and thrived in the new political economy. And unharmed by automation or globalization or the new social contract, I’d effectively ignored the fact that the majority of my fellow Americans weren’t prospering or thriving.
In 40 years ... Economic inequality has reverted to the levels of a century ago and earlier, and so has economic insecurity, while economic immobility is almost certainly worse than it’s ever been.

So far, it looks like Andersen agrees with me.
Quote:

The antiwar movement and counterculture, coming right after the successful civil-rights movement, had generated intense mutual contempt between the two main kinds of white Democrats, members of the working class and the expanding so-called New Class. ... Beginning right then, the suspicion and contempt between less-educated white people and the liberal white bourgeoisie became what the American class struggle was most visibly and consciously about. And it would define our politics as the economy was reshaped to do better than ever for yuppies and worse and worse for the proles ... Thus like most Democratic politicians at the same time, media people became enablers of the national change in perspective from left to right concerning economics ... From New Deal to New Democrats ... from then on it was much harder for labor unions to influence the Democrats’ choice of nominee—which in turn enabled Hart to help win the 1972 nomination for the hippie-loving, antiwar, women’s-lib, “acid, amnesty, abortion” candidate despised by so many of the blue-collar union members ... Hart, on the other hand, was a cool young Yalie whose 1974 Senate campaign stump speech was actually called “The End of the New Deal.” ... The new approach propagated rapidly. Soon almost every up-and-coming national Democratic politician was a New Democrat: Hart, Paul Tsongas, Jerry Brown, Bill Bradley, Al Gore, Bob Kerrey, Bill Clinton—all first elected senator or governor between 1974 and 1984 when they were in their 30s, all about to become serious presidential candidates ... https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/08/i-was-useful-idiot-c

Everything Andersen writes agrees with me - liberal, 'new', and neo-liberal Democrats were complicit in the selling out of the working class.

They still are.

BTW What I posted a couple of months ago still is true - Trump is a FAR better salesman than democrats give him credit for. He does a FAR better job ferreting out what people want to hear. Democrats who are harping, hoping, that being anti-Trump is the ticket to political success are doomed.

Democrats need a better shtick than the one they've gotten now, and a better shtick than Trump.

Democrats need a better shtick than the one they've gotten now, and a better shtick than Trump.

One simple example where Democrats and Republicans are on opposite sides about "the working class": the minimum wage. Biden and Democrats are for $15/hour and Trump is against. How does Trump sell being against raising the minimum? He says the opposite of what he means: he claims to be for it. It has been a year and the Democrats in the House have passed bill after bill to raise the minimum wage but the GOP controlled Senate won't. Between Trump being extra dishonest and Americans being extra uninterested, the minimum wage will not be going to $15/hour during the next 4 years. Even if Biden was elected, the minimum wage won't be going to $15 because the GOP, not the Democrats, will kill it in the Senate as long as there are 34 GOP Senators. There are no magic words that Democrats can say that will make voters take an interest in raising the minimum wage. The GOP won't be changing its mind until voters take a sustained interest, which voters won't because they just can't remember to do it. So minimum wage stays where the GOP wants it to be. The same is true on every issue, especially those that are far more complicated than changing one number from $7.25 to the number $15 per hour.
https://web.archive.org/web/20191005011721/https://www.bloomberg.com/n
ews/articles/2019-06-21/trump-says-he-s-weighing-democrats-plan-for-15-minimum-wage

See "The Unraveling of America", the next entry in this thread, for why American voters can't remember to support $15 per hour. Or maybe voters do remember and keep the minimum wage at $7.25, considering that to raise it would be a cost for them which they don't feel like paying.

The Unraveling of America

The American cult of the individual denies not just community but the very idea of society. No one owes anything to anyone. All must be prepared to fight for everything: education, shelter, food, medical care. What every prosperous and successful democracy deems to be fundamental rights — universal health care, equal access to quality public education, a social safety net for the weak, elderly, and infirm — America dismisses as socialist indulgences, as if so many signs of weakness.

The minimum wage is such a small part of how the US economy is failing Americans - well, failing in general - that it's hardly an economic issue at this point. It's more of a cultural one.

Democrats are not going to fix the economy. They have absolutely no intention of doing that.

And if democrats don't do any different, how are they any better?

Stop yourself for just a second, 1kiki. Please go look intensely at just the minimum wage. Come up with your own theory of why it has been stuck at one number since July 24, 2009. Your theory needs to explain who wanted the number stuck. There will be reasons why the people who stuck it to the working class want it stuck. Are the reasons true?

Keep getting those Virtue points, Machiavelli.

Shut up, 6ix. Every job you ever had, you walked away from or they fired you. In the real world, if you are even remotely like you are here, I can see why it happens to you, over and over.

Layoffs aren't firing, dipshit.

But keep pretending you give a shit about anybody but yourself. We all know that you don't.

Layoffs are firings. I was a construction engineer. When a project ended, they laid off workers, but kept the best ones for the next project. The slowest, the dumbest, the obnoxious workers got laid off, i.e., fired. 6ix, you fit in Group Obnoxious. By the way, it was easy for me to sort workers into groups because I knew everybody, knew what they did, and how well they did it. I had no mercy for poor white trash.

You need to employ your alternate personality to pile on, huh?

Why don't you worry about you like you always do, Second, and stop pretending like you give a shit at all about the working class.

We know that everything you say and everything you do is bullshit, and we certainly don't need a self-fellating head case like you speaking for any of us.

Have a nice day.

To quote 1kiki: "The minimum wage is such a small part of how the US economy is failing Americans - well, failing in general - that it's hardly an economic issue at this point. It's more of a cultural one. Democrats are not going to fix the economy. They have absolutely no intention of doing that." I wanted 1kiki to admit, but hasn't, that the minimum wage is small because the GOP blocks Democrats from raising it. It is such a simple piece of legislation that it is easy to understand how the GOP blocks it and will continue to block it until there are fewer than 34 GOP Senators.

Payday loans are harder to understand than minimum wages, but Democrats are all on one side and Republicans are all on the other. The Democrats want to control payday loans with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, but the GOP is sabotaging CFPB. A case came to my attention: $5,000 loan with $287 per week interest payments. That's 300% interest rate. I haven't seen the contract, but Hobson thinks (not absolutely sure) she has been paying since 2018. She was upset to be told that in two years she would have paid $30,000 in interest on a $5,000 loan. We made a deal where I give her $5,000 to pay off the loan and she pays me $125 per week for 40 weeks starting this week.

What you don't seem to realize is that you keep talking about my life as if I should be bitching about it, and I'm not the one bitching about anything.

I don't make $4,500 per year. I easily live off of $4,500 per year and either bank the rest or put it into my house.

I'm fine, dude.

Worry about your money, like we know you do everyday because you don't have any and you're in debt up to your eyeballs.

1KIKI

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Stop yourself for just a second, 1kiki. Please go look intensely at just the minimum wage. Come up with your own theory of why it has been stuck at one number since July 24, 2009.
You tell me - who was president in 2009? 2010? 2011? 2012? 2013? 2014? 2015? 2016?

MEANWHILE - why did the wages decline during Obama's presidency?

Queue Second bitching about Republicans in Congress.

Because he uses the same cop out every time he's asked about this.

And honestly, if he gives a single shit about this issue (which he doesn't) it makes me wonder why he even cares about Biden being elected since it's not going to change the minimum wage at all and in the alternate timeline where Biden wins the minimum wage isn't going to change in any meaningful way anyhow and he'd just use the same excuse for the next 4 to 8 years.
