The GOP’s effort to tie Trump’s hands on Russia
www.vox.com/world/2017/7/26/16034148/europe-russia-sanctions-bill-repu
blicans-trump

The sanctions bill passed the House of Representatives Tuesday by a lopsided margin of 419-3, and the Senate could be voting on it as early as this week as well.

The Senate passed a similar piece of legislation earlier this summer by a margin of 98-2, so it’s very likely that the bill’s supporters will have veto-proof majorities in both chambers of Congress.

If the bill becomes law, the Republican Party will be taking its first concrete steps to constrain Trump’s unpredictable and politically risky behavior on Russia.

Did you see those numbers? 98 to 2 in the Senate? 419 to 3 in the House?

Maybe soon Trump will not be the President handling foreign affairs with Russia.

Maybe someday, after the 2018 election but before 2020, Trump will not be the President handling any affairs, either foreign or domestic.

Could you be more specific about the threat you believe I am making? Who, what, when, where, how? And the most important: Why? I noticed after 9/11 that the Republicans were convinced the terrorists were after them, personally. I told them that no terrorist even knows they exist, let alone thinks they were worth killing by crashing an airplane into a skyscraper in downtown Houston, but that didn't seem to calm the anxieties or belligerency of Texas Republicans seeking revenge on Afghanistan. A few trillion dollars later, Republicans haven't learned a thing.

Make no mistake, there is no anxiety at all on my part. The idea of somebody like you hunting somebody like me is hilarious.

But you miss the point entirely.

People like you and people like me would never even cross paths in a scenario like that.

You can bet that you are going to have a lot of people coming for you though.

Congress has handcuffed Donald Trump on Russia.

Back in December, Obama announced a raft of new sanctions against Russia and the expulsion of dozens of Russian diplomats from the US as a penalty for its meddling in the 2016 election.

Today, Obama-era sanctions against Russia that are in place under executive orders — directives that only the president had authority to enact and rescind — are enshrined in the law. Trump can't rescind Obama's orders. It is not the same as Trump losing all Presidential power and being booted from the White House by Mike Pence, but it is a start.

ia-sanctions-veto

The next step in taking the White House away from Trump a little bit at a time is for Congress to forbid him from firing Robert Mueller.

- Congress moving on 2 bi-partisan fronts to pass legislation to protect Mueller's investigation.
- Mueller opens grand jury in DC

If he fires Mueller he's toast. If he doesn't fire Mueller he's toast. By firing Comey and saying on tv that he did it to stop the investigation into his ties with Russia, he's toast. He's likely been laundering money for Russian Mob/Oligarchs. Jr. attempted collusion - we still don't know what was exchanged at that meeting. Them saying "it was nothing," yeah, like we're going to believe that.

It's a mess G. He held a rally in Virginia to show he has enough support to make the lives of the Republicans difficult, to say the least. If he is guilty, he has to fire Mueller. Rallying his base first would be smart.

Trump's attacks could leave him friendless if impeachment comes

www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-senate-idUSKCN1AX2K3

President Donald Trump has stepped up his attacks on Republican senators, an approach he may regret if he is someday impeached and the Senate has to weigh charges against him stemming from an investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election.

More than half of the 11 Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which would be central to any proceeding to remove Trump from office, have tangled with the Republican president, including on Thursday when he fired off early-morning tweets.

In one Twitter series, Trump called Senator Lindsey Graham "publicity seeking" and said he "just can't forget his election trouncing" in the 2016 presidential race. Trump also assailed Senator Jeff Flake, another Republican critic, as "a non-factor in the Senate," adding, "He's toxic."

Flake and Graham are members of the Judiciary Committee, whose Chairman Chuck Grassley has urged Trump to tone it down.

"He should be 100 percent sticking to ideas and forget about personalities," Grassley said on Friday when pressed on whether Trump might find himself without the friends in Congress he would need to defend himself in an impeachment proceeding.

'TRUMP NEEDS FRIENDS'

Having friends would help any president facing impeachment, said Charles Brain, a White House liaison to Congress during Clinton's impeachment.

Without such friendships, Brain said, lawmakers "can just be quiet," refusing to share information with the White House and letting attacks on the president gain momentum.

The Art of the Deal ghostwriter Tony Schwartz says Donald Trump’s presidency ‘is effectively over’
August 18, 2017

Tony Schwartz, the co-author on Donald Trump’s infamous 1987 book The Art of the Deal, has said he believes Trump will soon resign from his position as POTUS.

The ghostwriter, who spent 18 months working on the book with the business tycoon in the 1980s, has been one of Trump’s most vocal critics since he started running in the presidential race. While he was with Trump writing his book, he said the business mogul was thinking about “how do I do whatever is best for me and how do I get over everybody else,” he told CNN today.

On Thursday, Schwartz tweeted: “Almost all of Trump’s limited attention is focused on beating down his critics. No time for governing which doesn’t interest him anyway.”

“The circle is closing at blinding speed. Trump is going to resign and declare victory before Mueller and congress leave him no choice.”

“He’ll say he did everything he could to save America. He’s going to try and paint this as his own victory and he’s the ultimate victor.”

I don't want to see Trump gone because I'm making money. But there is another reason: as lesson for Republican voters.

Everyone seems to be reporting that Steve Bannon is out. Bannon’s exit means the end of even the pretense that Trump's economic policy is anything different from standard Republicanism — and I think giving up the pretense matters, at least a bit.

The basics of the U.S. economic debate are really very simple. The federal government, as often noted, is an insurance company with an army: aside from defense, its spending is dominated by Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid (plus some ACA subsidies).

Conservatives always claim that they want to make government smaller. But that means cutting these programs — and what we know now, after the repeal debacle, is that people like all these programs, even the means-tested programs like Medicaid. Obama paid a large temporary price for making Medicaid/ACA bigger, paid for with taxes on the wealthy, but now that it’s in place, voters hate the idea of taking it away.

So what’s Trump the tax-cutter to do? His agenda is fundamentally unpopular; how can it be sold?

One long-standing answer is to muddy the waters, and make elections about white resentment. That’s been the strategy since Nixon, and Trump turned the dial up to 11. And they’ve won a lot of elections — but never had the political capital to reverse the welfare state.

Another strategy is to invoke voodoo: to claim that taxes can be cut without spending cuts, because miracles will happen. That has sometimes worked as a political strategy, but overall it seems to have lost its punch. Kansas is a cautionary tale; and under Obama federal taxes on the top 1 percent basically went back up to pre-Reagan levels.

So what did Trump seem to offer that was new? First, during the campaign he combined racist appeals with claims that he wouldn’t cut the safety net. This sounded as if he was offering a kind of herrenvolk welfare state: all the benefits you expect, but only for your kind of people.

Second, he offered economic nationalism: we were going to beat up on the Chinese, the Mexicans, somebody, make the Europeans pay tribute for defense, and that would provide the money for so much winning, you’d get tired of winning. Economic nonsense, but some voters believed it.

Where are we now? The herrenvolk welfare state never materialized, in part because Trump is too lazy to understand policy at all, and outsourced health care to the usual GOP suspects. So Trumpcare turned out to be the same old Republican thing: slash benefits for the vulnerable to cut taxes for the rich. And it was desperately unpopular.

Meanwhile, things have moved very slowly on the economic nationalism front — partly because a bit of reality struck, as export industries realized what was at stake and retailers and others balked at the notion of new import taxes. But also, there were very few actual voices for that policy with Trump’s ear — mainly Bannon, as far as I can tell.

So if Bannon is out, what’s left? It’s just reverse Robin Hood with extra racism.

On real policy, in other words, Trump is now bankrupt. If anything, Trumpism is going to get even uglier, and Trump even less presidential (if such a thing is possible) now that he has fewer people pushing for trade wars.

You lost me there. There is absolutely no reason to read the rest of your thought when you say that.

The alternative was Hillary. Period.

I'm not a Republican and I don't only vote Republican. I'm one of the people who actually vote in mid-terms and I know a bit about my local politics and I'm pretty 50/50 when it comes to local stuff.

Hillary and the idea of the Bush-Clinton-Bush-Obama-Clinton Status Quo continuing was fucking scary. Scary enough for somebody like Trump to get voted in.

Maybe the Democrats learned a lesson here and you'll have a real candidate that I could get behind next time.

You learned nothing, didn't you? You think you were breaking the status quo, but you voted for a Republican and you got a Republican with twist. For here’s the situation: a president who never meant it when he swore to defend the Constitution. He violates that oath just about every day and is never going to get any better.

A person who pauses to think about the matter has good reason to doubt the sincerity of Trump’s oath of office, or even his capacity to swear an oath sincerely at all.
www.lawfareblog.com/what-happens-when-we-dont-believe-presidents-oath

But a third of the country still approves of Trump — and that third amounts to a huge majority of the G.O.P. base. So all we get from the vast majority of elected Republicans are off-the-record expressions of “dismay” or denunciations of bigotry that somehow fail to name the bigot in chief.

It’s not just that Republicans fear primary challenges from candidates pandering to the racist right. Trump is already supporting challengers to Republicans he considers insufficiently loyal to Trump.

The fact is that white supremacists have long been a key if unacknowledged part of the G.O.P. coalition, and Republicans need those votes to win general elections. Given the profiles in cowardice they’ve presented so far, it’s hard to imagine anything — including evidence of collusion with a foreign power — that would make them risk losing those voters’ support.

So the odds are that we’re stuck with a malevolent, incompetent president whom nobody knowledgeable respects. If so, we have to hope that our country somehow stumbles through the next year and a half without catastrophe, because so far there has not even been the very first crisis, and that the midterm elections transform the political calculus and make the Constitution great again.

That's how you see it. Okay. It's not any different than any president has handled the Constitution since I've been old enough to vote if that's the case.

I don't believe any of them when they say anything. It will be a shame if 4 or 8 years of Trump turns out just as bad as the last string of presidents we've had are, but they were no different than what you're explaining now.

I don't disapprove of Trump at this juncture. Nothing he has really done so far sticks out to make me go out of my way to approve of him either. Call me ambivolant.

As for bigotry, we've had a very strong anti-white and anti-male stance in government for the last decade or so. You seem to fall into that category as well. I don't consider anything that Trump is doing bigoted.

It's not racist to be proud to be white. There are shades of gray and I'm getting pretty tired of anyone from the left immediately calling you a Nazi if you don't express your guilt for being white on a daily basis.

I don't think there are nearly as many "white supremacists" out there as people like you claim there are. But when you're part of a party that continually goes out of their way to take from white people, cut them down, and do your best to unite everyone else against them as if the average white
American has any real power or privilege, then don't be surprised when white people who aren't privileged like you stand up and tell you to fuck off.

I've seen no proof at all that Trump is malevolent. Jury is still out about his competency, but I'm not going to take it from somebody like you who has attacked him since the months leading up to the election.

I think you forget that there were times recently where the Democrats had a majority and that wasn't good for the country either. It would be more easy for me to take you at all seriously if everything you said wasn't from such a biased slant. I don't think it's possible though because your opinions are all built atop that ivory tower built on billions of oil that it's sitting on.

6stringJoker, you dumped your guts here. It is grotesque. I will pick one obvious and real world difference between Democrats and Republicans, both voters, politicians, and Trump. One side disbelieves in the greenhouse gas effect. Eventually one side will be proven to have been always wrong. More interesting are the murky psychological reasons why one side chose to be wrong. Even though one side has not yet been proven to be disastrously wrong and even though the entire world has already decided differently, those psychological reasons will still be controlling that one side long after the final proof arrives that forces a flip-flop on one side.

Oh. You mean the greenhouse effect. So you've already decided it then. I didn't know where you were going with that.

I don't have an opinion about it. I have no power to do anything about it, and I won't be alive if it all goes horribly wrong.

All the virtue signalers that pretend to care about it while simultaneously benefiting from everything our modern society has grown accustomed to that contributes to global warming I find quite amusing.

I can't prove it, but I'd bet that your carbon footprint is at least 10 times that of mine. That grows exponentially if you have children.

"I don't have an opinion about it." I've heard that many times in Texas from Republicans, at least the smarter ones. The dumber ones always have an opinion. Can you guess what it is?

Sometimes a Republican needs a pulsing red circle of data to understand how abnormally hot Earth is getting.

I honestly do not have any opinion about it.

I do what I can personally to not contribute any more than possible, which is much more than most Americans of any political affiliation do.

There ends the extent of my power to end global warming from where I'm sitting.

How many miles have you and your employees put on your vehicles this year? Your children?

According to a recent check with my insurance agent, in the last 4 years I've put less than 6,000 miles on my car.

Just sayin...

So you have no opinion, but despite that you are minimizing your waste because waste costs money. If carbon dioxide was a solid waste like household garbage, and Trump was the mayor of America who outlawed city garbage trucks and closed the city dump, then the piles of garbage would get Mayor Trump recalled from office, eventually, when the stink got bad enough in late summer. But for now Trump can play games:

Trump wrote, "The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive." Trump wrote, "This very expensive GLOBAL WARMING bullshit has got to stop. Our planet is freezing, record low temps, and our GW scientists are stuck in ice."

When asked on TV about Global Warming, Trump said, "I did not. I did not. I do not say that."

There's no argument that adhering to global warming commitments while at the same time purchasing goods from a country that doesn't is not only bad for our economy, but it completely undermines the effort.

Like I said... People will be people, and people want all the stuff they've grown accustomed to.

I don't deny that we aren't doing the environment any favors. I'm not going to pretend that I know enough about it to have a real opinion on about it though.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head with me though. My small carbon footprint is more about not wasting money than anything else. In the end on a big picture scale, money is the only way that it's going to get done.

I don't know what the answer to that is, and even if I did I'm powerless to do anything about it. I could tell you right now that it would probably wreck our economy if we closed trade with China until they had at least the same standards as we did.

I pay twice for almost everything: once when I buy and again for garbage pickup. Fuel is an exception. I only pay once, but burning fuel makes megatons of waste. Invisible waste, nearly transparent CO2. There was a scheme to pay for taking care of that waste: a carbon tax on fuel. I am under the impression that there are NO Republicans, certainly NOT Trump, willing to pay a carbon tax to handle their waste. They prefer to dump it into the air and let the rest of the world take care of it for them for free.

The Chinese do what Trump won’t. Why would Trump since global warming is a myth?

Yeah, the story is that Trump asked McConnell why he didn't intervene in the Russia investigation. Apparently he wanted McConnell to dismantle the Judiciary and Intelligence Committees regarding the Russia probe.

They're laying the blame at Trump's doorstep, and Mueller may call McConnell, and others, to testify as to the particulars of the phone call by Trump to McConnell. Apparently it was a profanity laden temper tantrum by Trump pressuring McConnell.

Oh, and this little leak was produced by McConnell's staff. McConnell is a shrewd operator, he will not publicly shame Trump, but will submit a threat to his political career. Obstruction of justice in regards to the Senate Majority leader, both houses are protected under the law. If it's true and Mueller investigates - all the rallies in the world won't help Trump.

If only Trump could buy Senators McConnell and McCain's loyalty with money, as Trump could do in real estate, but his standard operating procedure in business would look like bribing a Congressman, which is a crime.

It must be very frustrating for Trump to operate for the first time in an environment where every move is scrutinized by hostile lawyers. President Truman warned Trump if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Trump must not have paid attention because he was always talking, never listening.

www.dictionary.com/browse/if-you-can-t-stand-the-heat--get-out-of-the-
kitchen

I see why Trump does not learn when Senator McConnell tells him a fact: Researchers tested to see whether politicians changed their prior beliefs in the face of overwhelming evidence, and the results were pretty depressing.

The study, published in the British Journal of Political Science, set out to answer two questions: Does evidence help politicians make informed decisions, even if it challenges their beliefs? And does providing more evidence increase the likelihood of politicians accepting that evidence?

Julian Christensen, a political science researcher at Aarhus University in Denmark, wasn’t particularly surprised to find that a politician’s prior belief affects how they interpret factual information — that much has been shown before. But he was taken back when he saw that politicians doubled down when they were given even more evidence that goes against their prior beliefs. “That was a surprise for us,” he says, adding, “It’s also kind of depressing.”

Here's another little morsel from the Judiciary Committee:

After hours of grueling testimony, the Judiciary Committee is contemplating releasing the Dossier compiled by the British Intelligence spy. Apparently there are a number of factual points that have been verified with more to come.

The attorneys for the British Spy have given the okay to release the Dossier to the public, as requested at a Town Hall meeting with Senator Grassly. He did not oppose releasing said documents, pending legal clearance.

This is getting more and more interesting. Well, I look at it this way, Trump can say, with all conviction, that he is the biggest liar and crook in these here United States. He will live in infamy. Nixon will have to step aside as the biggest crook.

Make way for his royal blubberness!

I think this is funny because he is so clueless when he acts like it is none of his business: Trump to Texas as Hurricane Harvey approaches: "Good luck to everybody"
Updated by Jeff Stein Aug 25, 2017, 5:00pm EDT

Hurricane Harvey is predicted to dump more than 30 inches of rain and wreak havoc on the Texas coast from Friday evening into the weekend.

Even funnier, and even more clueless, is Trump saying that digging into his finances would be a "violation" of the Mueller investigation's limits. Every single time Trump says this, he is screaming to high heaven "I Am A Tax Cheater!"

"If you're looking at Russian collusion, the president’s tax returns would be outside that investigation," an adviser to the president told the Post.

But legal experts say Trump's financial history and business dealings are properly within the scope of the probe.

Just pointing out that Trump is in charge of FEMA and Hurricane Harvey, but very similar to Bush and Hurricane Katrina, Trump doesn't act as if it is his responsibility. He will be golfing, instead, leaving his crackerjack team with his responsibilities.

AS HURRICANE HARVEY APPROACHES, TRUMP APPOINTS DEPUTY CHIEF OF STAFF WHO FAILED TO PREPARE FOR KATRINA
https://theintercept.com/2017/08/25/kirstjen-nielsen-dhs/

Nielsen held the title of senior director for preparedness and response at the White House Security Council.

The Senate report “Hurricane Katrina: A Nation Still Unprepared” names Nielsen as among the key administration figures who failed to act on early warnings about the storm. A related bipartisan report from the House of Representatives on the government’s botched response to Katrina, “A Failure of Initiative,” similarly criticized Nielsen.

While serving in the Bush White House, the Senate report notes, Nielsen received an email from emergency planning officials six months before the storm in February 2005 warning that flooding in New Orleans “could cause similar devastation” as the tsunami that had devastated Southeast Asia the previous year.

Throughout August 27 and August 28, before the storm made landfall, Nielsen and other senior Bush aides received a flow of reports from DHS about the growing strength of Katrina, including a warning that floodwaters could overtop New Orleans’ levees. “Any storm rated Category 4 or greater,” one email from the Homeland Security Operations Center sent on August 28 warned, “will likely lead to severe flooding and/or levee breaching. This could leave the New Orleans area being submerged for weeks or months. … The magnitude of this storm is expected to cause massive flooding.”

Nielsen, the House report points out, headed Bush’s Homeland Security Council for Prevention, Preparedness and Response directorate, a team designed to relay information from disaster response agencies to the president.

Bush and his senior aides did not act on the warnings. On Saturday, August 27, Bush spent the day vacationing at his Crawford, Texas ranch. The following Monday, August 29, the president attended events in Arizona and California as the storm reached U.S. shores, joining Arizona Senator John McCain for McCain’s birthday celebration.

“Despite the clear warnings before landfall that Katrina would be catastrophic, the President and the White House staff were not sufficiently engaged and failed to initiate a sufficiently strong and proactive response,” the Senate report concluded.

6stringJoker, your reply is a variation on the truism: "What can you do about the weather?" One of my employees left a bulldozer at the bottom of an excavation. He could not comprehend why I was blaming him for the dozer being damaged. His excuse went something like this: "It doesn't rain here very often. I never imagined this would happen."

"Trump," I said, "it was your responsibility to move the equipment so it didn't drown. I expected you to fix this even on the weekend. You're fired." The heavy equipment operator was named Trump for this story, but I know him as Jack Ass.

Trump signed an executive order that revokes an earlier executive order by Obama that required recipients of federal funds to strongly consider risk-management standards when building in flood zones, including measures such as elevating structures from the reach of rising water. Obama’s Federal Flood Risk Management Standard, established in 2015, sought to mitigate the risk of flood damage charged to taxpayers when property owners file costly claims.

Evidence shows that every $1 spent on disaster mitigation can save $4 in post-disaster recovery and rebuilding costs. This is just another example of Trump undoing everything Obama did.

Why would recipients of Federal Funds be planning building anything, let alone something on a flood plain? That doesn't even seem like an executive order with a purpose.

I'd get behind one stating that construction of new homes should not be allowed on flood plains. Period. Many local and state laws have already been enacted and are enforced regarding that.

One of the homes I was looking at in the Chicagoland area was like that. I was told by the realtor that the reason the house was so cheap for the area was because it was deemed a flood zone and it needed extensive work. It was legal to put money into restoring the home on the current foundation, but it would have been against the law to knock the house down and build another one.

I know all about planning for the future Second. More than most. That's how I got into the position I'm in now with very limited resources.

Maybe Trump could have spent his day more productively than playing golf, but I don't know what you expect him to personally do about a hurricane.

Chances are it won't be much of an event anyway. Katrina was a tragedy and an anomaly.

All that article was is another hit piece that was targeted to the demographic that already hates Trump and wants something else to bitch about. Mission accomplished, so it would seem.
