I caught you lying, you Russian troll. I gave you hours to imagine an explanation, but you haven't explained why Trump did not shut down the borders to prevent coronavirus from entering the USA. A border shut down would interfere with Trump's reelection campaign is the real explanation.

If WHO(the morally crippled Tedros) had taken action earlier, we probably wouldn't be facing what we're facing.

That's the problem with morally crippled people, like Tedros, and you. They're incapable of doing what's right if it conflicts with their food bowl.

I guess there was no reason for Tedros to have STILL not declared this to be a pandemic. WHO must just be a toothless, ignorable soothsayer.

Show me how WHO can close USA borders over the objections of Trump. Please show me, 1kiki. While you are at it, show me how WHO could keep borders open when Trump closes borders. It is Trump that decides about USA borders, not WHO. It is all Trump's decision for why the borders are open. And Trump made that decision to help his reelection. Trump is morally bankrupt.

1kiki, I will be back in a few hours to see what kind of phoney answer you give to make Trump look good. Work hard on your fake story about how Trump would shut down the borders and stop all flights and crash the economy in order to stop the coronavirus, even if a shut down and crash would prevent him from being reelected.

Trump to hold news conference as White House is on defensive over coronavirus response

President Donald Trump has returned from India to see his administration on the defensive over his administration's handling of the novel coronavirus, as Cabinet officials are grilled in Congress and Democrats pan the White House's budget request to fight the virus.

Trump has scheduled a 6 p.m. ET news conference, following a briefing with top aides.

1kiki, I bet Trump does NOT shut down the borders, but you and I will know today. There is nothing stopping Trump from announcing a shut down except his concern for himself and his reelection.

WHO(Tedros) has still not declared SARS-COV-2 a pandemic.

That declaration would allow countries to take affirmative actions according to their own epidemic/ pandemic guidelines. By not declaring pandemic, WHO(Tedros) is blocking significant response.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the covid-19 virus already meets two of its three criteria for a pandemic: it spreads between people, and it kills. The third is that it has to spread worldwide. The virus is now in 38 countries – and counting – on nearly all continents, and those are just the ones we know about. How much more worldwide does it need to be before Trump acts like it is a pandemic and shuts down the border and loses his reelection?

C.D.C. Officials Warn of Coronavirus Outbreaks in the U.S.

The coronavirus almost certainly will begin spreading in communities in the United States, and Americans should begin preparations now, officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Tuesday.

“It’s not so much of a question of if this will happen anymore but rather more of a question of exactly when this will happen,” Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said in a news briefing.

In the event of an outbreak, communities should plan for “social distancing measures,” like dividing school classes into smaller groups of students, closing schools, canceling meetings and conferences, and arranging for employees to work from home.

“We are asking the American public to prepare for the expectation that this might be bad,” Dr. Messonnier said.

“We cannot hermetically seal off the United States to a virus,” Alex M. Azar II, the secretary of health and humans services, told a Senate panel on Tuesday. “And we need to be realistic about that.”

Mr. Azar said he was alarmed by the human-to-human transmission of the virus in other parts of the world without an identifiable connection to confirmed cases, and what that could mean for how the virus may hit the United States in the coming months.

Individually, people can take the measures recommended for other infectious diseases, like washing their hands, covering their mouths when they cough, and staying home and away from others when they are sick.

Yeah, sure.

SARS drew the collective focus of researchers throughout the world. The disease disappeared in 2004, likely due to isolation and quarantine containment measures, and no cases of SARS have been reported since..

Butbutbut but but but...
If WHO wanted nations to understand how to combat the novel coronavirus, they would have allowed the actual name SARS-COV-2 to be used, so everybody would know what was needed. Instead, WHO chose to hide the dangers by making up their own name for it, something like COVID-19.

When the bullets are coming from all directions, you're not going to be able to take cover and avoid them all. As more and more countries find cases, you can be sure EVEN MORE cases are UNfound, and in EVEN MORE countries. You can't seal off the borders from the entire planet. Testing is too flawed to provide meaningful protection. SOONER OR LATER, it's going to arrive. And not just from some sketchy location to go immediately into quarantine. But from a nondescript anywhere, ready to disappear into the crowd. That's just logic.

Trump has a simple—and surprisingly effective—approach to marketing: When someone else is in charge, everything is in terrible shape. When he’s in charge, everything is perfect. This is fairly benign lying when it applies to things that Trump has no control over—which is nearly everything—but not so benign when it interferes with things that Trump really does need to address, such as coronavirus. That’s what’s happening now. On the bright side, at least he hasn’t yet appointed Jared Kushner as our new coronavirus czar.

I don't know what 1kiki sees when watching this video of Trump, but I see a fast talker who will wait and see. That is Trump's favorite strategy. Wait and see. He is not shutting down the borders to keep coronavirus out. He is not isolating people with coronavirus. He is all wait and see. He is Mister Do Nothing, for fear of what doing something might do to the Dow-Jones.

testing ... one, two, three ... testing

19-spread-labs-frustrated-over-lack-tests

Test kits available 'soon,' but labs frustrated

Messonnier also addressed the stall in getting testing kits to state and local health departments.

"I am frustrated that we have had issues with our test. I want to assure you we are hoping to modify the kits and hope to send them soon," Messonnier said.

She also pointed out that the CDC was testing as many as 400 samples at a time and providing overnight results. "There is no current backlog or delay," she said.

On Feb 12, the CDC announced that several test kits sent to public health labs had an issue with a test reagent, which caused the negative control to generate a test response where there should have been none.

When pressed on when specifically the kits will be made available, Messonnier did not provide a date.

Currently, only 12 labs outside of the CDC—located in California, Illinois, Nebraska, Nevada, and Tennessee—have the capability to test for the virus. Peter Kyriacopoulos, the chief policy officer for APHL, told CIDRAP News the testing process could be dramatically shortened and expanded if 100 Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL)-member labs receive authorization to do their own tests.

He said yesterday that the APHL addressed a letter to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) asking for permission for member laboratories to use lab-developed tests between now and when the improved CDC kit is re-sent. Permission has to be granted because the FDA already issued Emergency Use Authorization for the CDC's test.

"We know because of the prevalence of this issue in the media, many of our labs may be called to do testing, and they will want to be responsive," said Kyriacopoulos. He explained that the labs could do manual extraction of the virus RNA, but testing would be more streamlined if they were allowed to use automated RNA extraction platforms. He said the automatic extraction devices would cost each lab about $200,000.

Joanne Barkus, PhD, the director of the Public Health Laboratory at the Minnesota Department of Health, said she is frustrated by the delay.

"We are trying to prepare for what I feel will be inevitable—a case in Minnesota—and we will want to expand testing," she told CIDRAP News. Right now, Barkus said the CDC was keeping up with test demands. But that could easily be changed if multiple community detections occur across the country and state epidemiologists begin testing case contacts en masse.

1kiki, what does Trump do when the test is positive for coronavirus? Nothing. Nothing at all. The patient decides. Maybe they go home. Maybe not. Trump really does not want to get involved, but when it was Obama's problem Trump wanted Obama to do something involuntarily to the patient. Trump wanted to keep those people testing positive out of the country. Or forced into isolation.

There was a lot of wrangling over livers for transplant availability, the timing of the supplemental request and so forth. But when it comes to whether or not Azar was on the same page with the CDC, I'd say yes.

Not shouting here, it's how the session was transcribed:
AZAR:

WE WORK TO CONTAIN AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, BUT AT SOME POINT, IF THERE IS SOME SUSTAINED HUMAN TO HUMAN TRANSPORT, WE HOPE TO MITIGATE. I WAS VERY CLEAR WHEN WE ENACTED CONTAINMENT MEASURES AT THE BORDER, WE CANNOT MEDICALLY SEAL OFF THE UNITED STATES TO A VIRUS AND WE NEED TO BE REALISTIC ABOUT THAT. IT DOES. AND WE WILL HAVE MORE CASES IN THE UNITED STATES, WE HAVE BEEN TRANSPARENT ABOUT THAT AND WE HOPE TO WORK TO MITIGATE THE IMPACT OF THOSE.

OBVIOUSLY, IT WOULD BE CONCERNING AT THE VIRUS SPREADS TO AFRICA OR OTHER AREAS THAT HAVE LESS DEVELOPED PUBLIC HEALTH INFRASTRUCTURE, BECAUSE THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TAKE THE STEPS TOWARDS MITIGATION AND CONTAINMENT THAT WE WOULD TAKE HERE. IT WOULD SPREAD RAPIDLY. THIS IS WHY IT IS SO CRITICAL TO GET BETTER DATA OUT OF CHINA SO WE KNOW THE SEVERITY AND WHAT THE MORTALITY RATES REALLY ARE HERE, SO WE KNOW WHAT WE ARE DEALING WITH IN TERMS OF IMPACT.

I read the presser and it was laughable. I didn't count how MANY times they crowed about the claim that the only cases they've found in the US were from China, the Diamond Princess, or from known transmission.

But they repeated it it in all seriousness despite the fact that those are the only places they've looked !!

Yep. They only looked in a few places but they're SURE it isn't anywhere else! Because by gum, they're sure!

And then they made a big deal about how great they were at 'containment'. Remember, because they haven't looked anywhere else, it means it doesn't exist anywhere else.

What a joke.

What a travesty.

I'm completely disgusted at the shit they threw around.

It's interesting, the coverage had been so different than the SARS and Ebola outbreaks.

Everyone is trying to either weaponize the info, or defend against it. When the epidemic was strictly in China, there was either no coverage at all, or critics were given inordinate platform with the seeming intent to destabilize the Chinese government. In the meantime the Chinese government was doing its best to avoid being pilloried by fudging the numbers.

Meanwhile, discussion of it's eventual spread to the USA was moribund. It wasn't until the M$M figured out a way to weaponize it against Trump that they started making a big deal about it ... Yanno, like shitstain. Where is the responsible journalism? Lying on the floor, fatally infected with ideology.

Not that there isn't a serious problem, but what did Obama's chief of staff, Rham Emanuel, say? Never let a serious crisis go to waste? Lots of vested interests are going to try and spin this to their advantage.

It’s dangerous for governments to claim the coronavirus outbreak is under control

Just days before the Chinese government locked down Wuhan, the city at the center of the coronavirus outbreak, health authorities said the spread of the virus was “preventable and controllable.” A week before South Korea reported a surge in confirmed cases traced to a religious cult, the president said the country had brought the virus “well under control.” And this week, US president Donald Trump tweeted that the coronavirus is “very much under control in the USA.”

These sorts of pronouncements by public officials may be calculated to reassure the public and shore up people’s confidence in the government. But risk communication experts say such messages are often over-reassuring and over-confident, resulting in a potentially dangerous mismatch between people’s perception of risk and actual reality. The hazards posed by this mismatch are particularly pronounced during an epidemic like the current Covid-19 outbreak, when developments are rapid, time is of the essence, and much hinges on the coordinated responses of government agencies and the public.

“When the officials and the experts are trying to prepare or calm the public, their responsibility… is to recreate in the public the same level of fear or lack of fear as their own,” said Jody Lanard, a risk communication consultant who has advised the World Health Organization (WHO). The public shouldn’t be any more scared or calm than government officials and health authorities—but while this kind of calibration is “conceptually easy… it’s incredibly hard to do if you’re afraid of public fear,” she added.

Dismissing the public’s fears might even run the real risk of fanning fears further. Government officials and the WHO have repeatedly said that now is the time for “facts, not fear.” While facts are crucially important, the admonition also effectively gives the impression that the public’s emotions are just annoyances to be dealt with. But in an epidemic with so much uncertainty, fear is both natural and inevitable.

“The government needs to learn to tolerate that the public will get frightened, without thinking that the public is hysterical or panic stricken,” said Lanard. Every epidemic has a series of what she calls “oh my god moments“—the first death, for example, or the first child to fall critically ill—that cause alarm and anguish. What governments need to do, she said, is to guide the public to “go through that upset a little bit in advance so that they’re a little bit more prepared when the real things happen.”

US officials risk compromising their credibility by contradicting each other, with the White House insisting that the virus is contained, while the Center for Disease Control tells the public to start preparing for community spreading and San Francisco declaring an emergency.

“In short, the whole thing is a master class in how to screw up communications during a crisis and utterly undermine trust in the agencies that will be essential for public health and safety as the epidemic spreads,”
wrote Carl Bergstrom, a professor of biology at the University of Washington.

The deal is this: the NCov-19 is incredibly infectious. Scientists now claim to have found HIV-like sequences on the Wuhan virus' surface ... this time repeated between Chinese and EU labs ... which make the virus 100-1000 more efficient at infecting human cells than the SARS virus. And altho this virus is less deadly than SARS (2% for NCov-19 and 8-10% for SARS) it's infectivity more than makes up for it's lowered mortality rate. Plus, the whole problem of reinfection had not been resolved.

It's best to limit your exposure to large groups of people: restaurants, sports events, gyms, theme parks, airports, train stations, buses ... you should wear a mask, if only to remind yourself not to touch you nose, mouth, or (hopefully) eyes without washing and sanitizing your hands first.

Research by team from Nankai University shows new virus has mutated gene similar to those found in HIV and Ebola

When looking at the genome sequence of the new coronavirus, Professor Ruan Jishou and his team at Nankai University in Tianjin found a section of mutated genes that did not exist in Sars, but were similar to those found in HIV and Ebola.

“This finding suggests that 2019-nCoV [the new coronavirus] may be significantly different from the Sars coronavirus in the infection pathway,” the scientists said in a paper published this month on Chinaxiv.org, a platform used by the Chinese Academy of Sciences to release scientific research papers before they have been peer-reviewed.

The mutation could not be found in Sars, Mers or Bat-CoVRaTG13, a bat coronavirus that was considered the original source of the new coronavirus with 96 per cent similarity in genes, it said.

Meanwhile, a study by French scientist Etienne Decroly at Aix-Marseille University, which was published in the scientific journal Antiviral Research on February 10, also found a “furin-like cleavage site” that is absent in similar coronaviruses.

We conducted investigation on patients in a local hospital who were infected with this virus. We found the presence of 2019-nCoV in anal swabs and blood as well, and more anal swab positives than oral swab positives in a later stage of infection, suggesting shedding and thereby transmitted through oral–fecal route. We also showed serology test can improve detection positive rate thus should be used in future epidemiology. Our report provides a cautionary warning that 2019-nCoV may be shed through multiple routes.

OK - I look like a dweeb.

But I carry IPA wipes, hand sanitizer, and masks in my purse. When I go to the restaurant, I wipe off wherever I'm going to touch (I've been doing it for a while - I always say - never mind me, I'm just being paranoid), make sure no one is coughing or ill around me, when I leave I use hand sanitizer after handling money ... and I put on a mask to start running my errands. If it looks too dicey, I'll give up the restaurant entirely.

Just today I bought more hand sanitizer, and like the last time, I gifted one to Walgreens at the checkout counter. I'll gift even more wherever they'll take them, but the small places I usually go seem reluctant to make people nervous by putting out hand sanitizer.

I know people with HIV. I knew people who died of AIDS. It's not something people just causally mention in conversation. They have to trust you pretty well, in general.

As for SARS-COV-2 - nope, I don't know anybody who admits to it.

But yanno what I've been saying all along - it's been over 6 weeks since I had the flu, and I'm STILL coughing! I intend to not catch anything else for the next year.

I know someone with AIDS. In fact, I was there when he came down with the symptoms of initial infection and he was trying to explain it away as a gastrointestinal bug. I didn't have the heart to tell him that I thought he was wrong, but I DID urge him to see a doctor (which he did, fortunately).

Given that the doubling rate is somewhere in the realm of 4-5 days ... very dependent on cultural circumstances ... if you're in the military sleeping in barracks and showering and eating together in the mess tent, the doubling time would probably by a lot shorter, but I digress ... given that the doubling time is 4-5 days, we will know, even with our lackluster (if not deliberately blindfolded) testing, in a month whether this is something that withers away, like the SARS and swine flu epidemics, or is a real problem.

IN THE MEANTIME, I don't intend to be one of those people who assumes everything is fine because nobody in government has said any different.

SIX, you're probably safer in Indianna than I am near LA. LA, San Diego, NYC, Seattle ... any city with a port and a large Asian population is going to be the canary in the coalmine. You get to get out the popcorn and watch, at least for a couple of weeks.

I dunno. The Deep State? The CDC? Jeff Bezos?

It would probably be good to know how something like this is going to effect society. Not a great plan if it's something that can't be controlled, and I personally think it's foolish to ever think that you could control it in the end.

Maybe somebody made a fast acting superflu that will burn itself out quickly (or at least was designed to in theory), but has a fairly low mortality rate (which I assume is most impacting the elderly and babies as per usual), and they wrote off the losses as less social security they have to pay out and less welfare in the future since poor people are probably impacted higher than rich people as well.

If I'm right, this will get quite a bit worse before it gets better or there's no real merit to the plan. It needs to be scary... at least a little bit. It can't just be something in the news cycle for a few months that nobody is feeling the impact of.

A strain would need to be put on hospitals and infrastructure. You'd need to have data on how much preparation people have already done or will do as things get bad. Will stores be empty? Will schools shut down? How does it effect elections? Will people become more like animals? Will people just getting the regular run of the mill flu start going nuts?

"As for AIDS... I still don't believe it. I've still never known anybody who's known anybody." Hey, I'm not nobody!

And OMG - Jack, you've become JO, except he thinks it's all RUSSIA!!! all the time, and you think it's 'them'.

However, watching the 2 of you I've come up with a formula for paranoia - take 1 smart guy ~ 40-60 yrs old, and leave them alone in their house for a few months / years ...

Finally ... this must have hit you in a weak spot at a bad time. You're still SAD, you've just come out of major mouth surgery, and, too bad for you, you were born to be anxiety-prone. I know situations you don't feel capable of dealing with put you into a whole lot of stress. But unresolvable situations are going to happen here and there all through your life, Jack. The house, your teeth, were never going to be the only things.

So, in your relatively safe situation, this may be a good time to try to come up with a way of dealing with those kind of life events in general.

But in particular Jack, your chances of catching anything are very low. You're in an isolated part of the country, and you yourself lead an isolated life. To put this in as realistic terms as possible, you'll probably be in the group who'll be isolated enough that you won't have to deal with this, and then in a few months there will be a vaccine for you.

Trump's happy talk is counterproductive at this point.

Trump is giving people false hope if he tells them coronavirus is going to simply be kept at bay in far-off places. Infection may sweep across the country with a lot of people getting sick, and doing further mitigation on an individual community level is going to be inconvenient and annoying. Precisely because it will be annoying, however, it would be helpful for the president and his appointees to start delivering a consistent message about how to get ready so as to minimize the inconvenience.

It’s obvious that President Trump has the stock market on his mind when he’s thinking about coronavirus, as evidenced by the two times during a press conference Wednesday evening when he blamed Democrats for the market’s fall.

That’s unseemly on its own terms, but it also seems to be driving a certain amount of happy talk from the president and his economic team, who keep contradicting clear messages from public health officials that a pandemic is likely.

Instead of accepting this, Trump tried to be reassuring, arguing that “the risk to the American people remains very low” and “I don’t think it’s inevitable” that the disease will spread. He said a vaccine is being developed “rapidly,” only to have Anthony Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, clarify that in this context that means one is 12 to 18 months away.

And he angrily demanded credit for having restricted travel from China earlier, saying that subsequent events had vindicated him — a typical egomaniacal gesture from the president. But more to the point, it’s a sign that he continues to take undue refuge in the hope that the outbreak can be contained rather than endured.

The truth is, however, that investors and corporate decision makers with money on the line can and will take the time to listen carefully to what the experts are saying. Markets have fallen because the news they have to offer is simply not that good. The president is not going to meaningfully alter the trajectory of the stock market by downplaying the realities. He could, however, reduce the number of people who take adequate preparative steps now while the situation is still calm.

I didn't realize it, but it wasn't that general surveillance just didn't happen by accident. It was because it was not allowed if someone wasn't from a high-risk situation. So there may be all sorts of people out there with COVID-19 that weren't tested by official policy. That makes yesterday's presser about how great containment is more like intentional propaganda.

Anyway, after -- somehow -- testing a person who didn't meet the criteria for being tested, and finding apparent community transmission, the CDC has changed its rules: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-nCoV/hcp/clinical-criteria.html

Testing is now allowed for serious cases only, like pneumonia, that have no other apparent cause.

Coronavirus live updates: First confirmed case of unknown origin emerges in U.S. — in Solano County

When I mentioned that evidence of a death from COVID19 would include a sprouting of cases in the community, I had assumed the CDC was testing for the cases of the virus.

Well, now we know that the CDC refused for 4 days to test the sample of an infected patient.
Good way to prevent the accurate reporting of the number of cases, by nt testing patients who have it.

I see headlines are saying Solano County, withuot even mentioning it is CA, let alone that it is around San Francisco.
In completely unrelated news, this is the same San Francisco which is home and office to Nancy Pelosi, where the streets and sidewalks are filled with human poop. Yes, people must walk through this COVID-19 infested poop on the sidewalk and in the streets. And people must drive through this poop on the streets, and carry the infectious virus on their tires for as far as they can travel in 9 days. And then the Nancys have the gall to announce that they have no clue how the virus was spread to this newest case, the 60th in America. Shokers, just shockers, theat this was around SF.
It sounds like Travis AFB is also in Solano Co. And with these local workers becoming used to and complacent around the filth of SF poop in the streets, no small wonder they may have contained it as well as the Wuhan Labs and Hospitals.

Obviously, Rosie's sister Nancy is doing a great job.

The medical /scientific /public health people standing up with Trump all knew the score about how pathetically limited testing was. And yet they stood up there with Trump to support the idea this was well under control. They abandoned any medical and scientific integrity they might ever have had to support political propaganda.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

So I heard on the news that some patient's dog tested positive for coronavirus. If that kind of thing stands up to testing, and if it can be extended to other species, it has huge implications not just for medicine, but for the environment.

Not exactly the Satan bug, but ...

I mean, I knew in the beginning of the epidemic there were people who insisted ... INSISTED, I TELL YOU... that a retrovirus wasn't the cause of AIDS, that it was a "lifestyle" disease caused by drug use and the "homosexual lifestyle".

That non-homosexuals and non-drug users (like, children who caught it from their mothers during birth) also got AIDS? Piffle!

That clean living and vitamins didn't provide a cure? Just a hoax!

That the virus was isolated from patients and its sequence determined, and it was seen under electron microscope? An incidental finding!

That antivirals reversed the symptoms and allowed patients to live longer, healthier lives? A hoax by Big Pharma!

That the disease could be prevented by using condoms during sex, despite all the rest of the "homosexual lifestyle"? Sheer placebo effect!

It was as crazy-making as listening to a flat-earther deny direct, experiential evidence that the earth is round.

I thought that the idea of the "non-viral" origin of AIDS had disappeared under the onslaught of evidence, but apparently there still are adherents to the idea, just as there are still flat-earthers around.

Well, it takes all kinds, I guess! The world would be a lot less interesting if everyone just accepted evidence! Carry on!

It might not be as bad as you imagine: Why the Silent Spread of Coronavirus Might Actually Be a Good Sign

In China, the death rate has been reported as zero in children under 10, and very low, 0.2 percent, in healthy adults. Unfortunately, the rate is far higher, as high as 14.8 percent, in the sick and elderly (though as is always the case in outbreaks like this, it is hard to know how many of these older and often chronically ill hospitalized patients died with COVID19, not because of COVID19). The reported overall death rate of 2 percent is essentially a weighted average of these numbers.

So, what does the case of a young and otherwise healthy patient contracting the disease despite no obvious exposure to a contagious source patient imply? That there are likely many asymptomatic cases in our communities already. Asymptomatic transmission has already been reported in China. In the first reported case, the source patient transmitted the infection to others, but never became sick herself.

If this turns out to be common, it’s a good thing. It implies that the case fatality rate—the number of deaths divided by the number of infections—of this novel coronavirus is likely to be far, far lower than the reported statistics.

It’s worth parsing that coronavirus 2019-nCoV is the virus that causes the syndrome of respiratory symptoms now called COVID19. The number of people who carry the 2019-nCoV virus is not equal to the number of people who develop COVID19. These should be thought of as distinct entities. Only a subset of patients with the virus will ever develop COVID19. We do not yet know how many infected patients go on to develop the symptomatic syndrome itself. But the more people who have the 2019-nCoV virus but do not develop the symptomatic COVID19 syndrome itself, the less dangerous we can conclude it is for most people to contract it. Many may walk around and not notice.

While that may sound like a bunch of Typhoid Marys are walking around unknowingly infecting people, the assumption we have to make is that a high number of people will eventually be exposed to the virus anyway. If there’s one thing that’s clear so far, it’s just how contagious this virus is. So the fact that exposure might come sooner—because of asymptomatic carriers transmitting it in their communities—doesn’t make the disease any worse. It does suggest that not everyone will become sick from the virus and that the case fatality rate is likely far lower than the rates reported so far.

While the presence of asymptomatic carriers should be reassuring for the young and healthy among us, it is also a stark reminder that our primary responsibility as citizens and neighbors is to do whatever we can to decrease spread of all infections, including non-coronavirus infections, especially to vulnerable individuals, older patients and those with serious medical problems like coronary artery disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory illnesses, and cancer. That of course includes things like handwashing and staying on top of vaccination schedules. Wearing masks without attending to these other precautions misses the point, which is that most infections spread through lapses in hand hygiene and close contact. If COVID19 panic finally teaches us to focus on the right things and to better adhere to those recommendations, in the long run, this novel coronavirus might help us save more lives in our communities—for all contagious infections—than it ever directly kills.

When a Pandemic Meets a Personality Cult

On Wednesday Trump held a news conference on the virus, much of it devoted to incoherent jabs at Democrats and the media. He did, however, announced the leader of the government response to the threat. Instead of putting a health care professional in charge, however, he handed the job to Vice President Mike Pence, who has an interesting relationship with both health policy and science.

Early in his political career, Pence staked out a distinctive position on public health, declaring that smoking doesn’t kill people. He has also repeatedly insisted that evolution is just a theory. As governor of Indiana, he blocked a needle exchange program that could have prevented a significant H.I.V. outbreak, calling for prayer instead.

And now, according to The Times, government scientists will need to get Pence’s approval before making public statements about the coronavirus.

So the Trumpian response to crisis is completely self-centered, entirely focused on making Trump look good rather than protecting America. If the facts don’t make Trump look good, he and his allies attack the messengers, blaming the news media and the Democrats — while trying to prevent scientists from keeping us informed. And in choosing people to deal with a real crisis, Trump prizes loyalty rather than competence.

Maybe Trump — and America — will be lucky, and this won’t be as bad as it might be. But anyone feeling confident right now isn’t paying attention.

You really are the most epic narcissist I've ever seen.

You don't think AIDS exists because you live so sheltered you've never seen it??

The entire world -including ALL the doctors- are participating in a conspiracy to make sex "bad"???

Mind...boggling.

Not that it matters to you, but when I worked at the casino there was one guy that had HIV and one guy that had AIDS in the year and a half I worked there. One straight guy, one gay. Both were bartenders. The second guy dropped his till off with me one night and never came back. I was the last person to see him alive at work. He looked like walking death, rail thin, out of breath and bright red. I asked him twice that week if he was ok. I didn't know he'd died until I asked someone where he went a couple weeks later. He actually died of severe dehydration from shitting blood. He was only 32. It was then that his friend told me about the other guy. I had no clue about either.

People that have AIDS and HIV aren't going to go around telling everyone. Most work until they get a bowel or lung infection and then very quickly just die and you aren't likely to know.

No, we're supposedly hyping panic over it to bring down Trump.

Has nothing to do with "people gonna die" and as long as we all avoid handrails it'll all be ok, though.

I was at a docs office yesterday and the nurse there blew it all off. "We lived through swine flu and Sars and everything else. People live, people die, whatever."
