It sounds like healthwise you both are doing pretty well. That's good news! SIX, there are a couple of reasons why your BPM might be in the upper range: I heard (somewhere) that some people just have mechanically smaller hearts than others, so their hearts have to pump more often since they can't pump as hard/as much volume.

However, ANOTHER possibility is that you might be somewhat dehydrated. You've mentioned that you work pretty hard in hot environments; if you're sweating a lot you're losing both salt AND water. So try drinking a couple of quarts of water spread out over the day, and put more salt in your food (maybe a 1/2 teaspoon spread out over a day, or a tablespoon of gluten-free tamari [soy] sauce) and check your bp and bpm. If your bpm goes down and your bp stays stable you may have found that you've been somewhat dehydrated most of the time. But if your bp goes up, then you're salt-sensitive, so best to stay away from too much salt.

Over here, destined for a week of 90+ weather, including today, Wednesday, and Thursday at/ above 100. So I've deferred any heavy digging in the garden for the foreseeable future, and will be limiting my yard-work to raking, pruning, and hand-weeding/watering.

It's kind of funny, this summer so far has been very much like the very first post of this thread: Unusually hot, and VERY unusually humid. Some of my garden - the avocados, tomatoes, and eggplant - are taking a beating as far as mites are concerned. So I'm trying a weekly garden spraying with NEEM oil, and spent a fair bit of yesterday hosing down/flooding the avocados, pines and camellias because I read that persea and other mites can be knocked down from the leaves and drowned. I sure hope so! I know I'll have been successful if I see bright new growth that stays healthy. I think I'll do another NEEM oil on the trees as well, followed by a double-dose of predatory mites. It's an ongoing experiment to find a winning combination.

I went to see the ENT surgeon for follow-up. Going boldly up my nose, where no man (except him) has gone before, he pulled a stent from my left ethmoid sinus passage ... the right stent having already been lost somewhere during a hard sneeze. It was not at all as I expected. What I THOUGHT I would see was a mesh/spring-like thing, what I saw was a surprisingly long and narrow hard plastic tube. I hope the opening STAYS open without the stent because I have to say ... my nose is ridiculously stuffy now, having been mangled in-office. And all for what looks (to me) like a teeny-tiny opening! If it doesn't stay open ... another surgery.

Interesting...

I've always had a "problem" with my breathing, as long as I can remember. I can only breathe out of 1 nostril at a time about 99% of the time or more. I hardly ever notice it and don't give it all that much thought since it's always been my normal, but whenever I do notice it is during the "switch-over". What a glorious time that is, because I can actually breathe out of both nostrils for about a minute before it flips over.

Sometimes it makes me think about President Skroob

From what my boss said last night before I left work.

It is good in a way. Means I have more time to look for a new place and gives my hands a break from what I do for her, so they shouldn't be bothering me so much.

Burns Bog is in Richmond which is a fair ways from me. Wind is blowing the smoke to me and farther.

I figure either something that was smouldering under the peat flared up or someone was walking through the bog, there are trails in there and did something stupid.

Just got some quotes for my car today. Much cheaper than I thought things would be for a change.

4 new tires installed for 265 bucks, and a new windshield installed for only $135. Looks like I should be able to get both of them done early in August. After that, all I need to do is get new front breaks and get myself a burner phone for emergencies and I should be able to have relatively stress free driving to work this winter compared to last winter. :)

Now that I won't leak oil all over their parking lot I'm going to call my step-sis about starting the work on my teeth too. Get this cesspool cleaned up and I'm hoping that along with all the other changes in lifestyle and improvements in my health that I'll be feeling even better once that's done.

Then I start saving for my new furnace and central air, the gutters and fixing my back porch. Once that's all done, hopefully by the end of next summer, I can start saving for a new car and at that point I might actually be able to start enjoying a little bit of fun money for the first time since what seems like forever ago....

Well.... I might indulge on black friday. My old man just got a 4k 50" TV for 269 bucks on Prime day a little while ago. I had no idea TVs were getting that cheap. It'll probably pay for itself in 5 years with how much less energy it would use compared to my old projection TV that I'm still rocking.

I smell smoke here too, but I'm not sure where it's coming from since the nearest "big" fire is in the opposite direction.

****

This is just too gross not to share, but if you're easily disgusted don't bother. It has to do with my sinus stent

Select to view spoiler:

So apparently the doctor didn't remove "the stent", he just removed a kind of "pin" that held it together. I have been told to rinse, rinse, rinse my nose, and the usual procedure is to tip your head sideways and squirt saline solution into the upper nostril so that it drains out the lower nostril. But that just didn't seem to be doing the trick for me, so I squirted the saline solution into the LOWER nostril and held the syringe in place so that the sinuses and nostril fill up with water, and counted off sixty seconds to give the saline a chance to "work". Well, right after I did that and blew my nose, the rest of the stent came out. It was like nothing so much as a 1/4" dia tube made of "mesh" which was made of something like small fish-bones. Dissolvable, see? Some kind of synthetic collagen or something. I won't go on with a further description because it's gross and disgusting except to say that the mesh was apparently serving as a medium for some kind of nasty bacterium, but to see something like that come out of my nose was just ... well, I've never seen anything like it before and likely will never see anything like that again. So, if YOU ever have a sinus passage stent, you'll know what to do ... and what to expect!

My so-much brighter-than-myself sister has a hi-larious way of looking at getting old. She calls it the "stages of conversation". When you're young, you talk about school and people of the opposite (or sometimes the same) sex.

When you get married it's the kids. The house. The kids.

As you get older, it starts to be about your health issues. Your aches and pains, the medicine you take, maybe even the procedures that you've had, and your friend's health.

At some point, you start talking about your friends and family who died. My sis, she does this great Polish babcia (grandma) imitation ...You know Stella on the Nort Side? The one whose daughter left for Chicago? Yeh, yeh, the one who married that nice man from Cincinnati? Well, she died...

*****

What I noticed is that as I get older, my bedtime ritual gets longer and longer. It used to be that I'd shower, plop into bed, sleep like a log and wake up refreshed. Now, I have to take a shower, put steroid cream on my many many skin inflammations, take my pills ... for heartburn and blood pressure and aspirin for arthritis, brush my teeth, rinse and spray my nose and put on a nose strip so I can BREATHE at night ... set the AC to a temperature that I can tolerate, and MAYBE I'll sleep for all of 5 hours at a stretch, if I'm lucky!

So there you are, SIX! That's life when you get over 65-ish!

I hear ya Sig. That's the way it is with the ladies who I play mah jong with. Grandchildren, children and aches and pains.

My late evening routine is take my seizure meds, wait an hour have a snack, get up around midnight to head to bed. First stop is brush my teeth, attend to other things, get into bed and try to get some sleep. I can usually manage 8hours but sometimes it is less.

I figure I must have banged into a wall in the basement and didn't even feel it.

My knuckles are starting to hurt now but I have musician's hands. Long, thin fingers. My dad used to tease me that I could either be a thief or a musician. He also had musician's hands.

BRENDA, what the heck are you doing that you can skin your elbow like that? I always imagined that you would be doing something delicate, like working in a bookstore or something!

I didn't do any gardening today, altho I DID spend two hours yesterday digging up more grass and weeds from the front yard. Tomorrow, I think I need to soak the Fuerte avocado again, it's looking terribly stressed, and then spray the backyard with Neem oil. It does seem to be doing the trick keeping the mites at bay, but I'll also order a double batch of neoselious californicus and hope that THIS time they can keep the mites down on a continuing basis.

I haven't been going to the farmer's market for almost a year, but I'm STILL watering that parking lot tree! Looking back I see I started with an emergency 4 gallons, and have graduated to 14 per week. The tree is so happy it actually pushed out a few blossoms, but I sure wish the property owner would fix the irrigation system!

It was here for me today Sig. I had a good walk in the heat looking at some apartment buildings.

Funny you should mention that as I did try working in a bookstore just after I got out of high school but my brain and numbers not a good match. I couldn't learn how to make change. This was before computers and just before tills that did the figuring for you.

Like I said to Jack. I must have been getting something from the basement or putting something away and banged it and never noticed it. Happens. A few weeks ago, I put a small cut into my left hand and never noticed it either.

Good luck with your gardening or weeding.

Back to work.... Another really good night and I even got an extra half hour in there. Got the OK from my manager to work an extra hour on Friday night into Saturday morning so I don't have to waste an hour before I can go and get the tires ordered for the cheap sale install. Looks like my 3rd week out was jagged up on the schedule again, but at least this one and the next were right this time. Progress... Mentioned it to my manager and he said no problem we'll take care of it tonight.

So next week I should have the new tires and windshield installed. Just need to figure out if I'm going to do the breaks myself or if I can find a cheap place to do them. I'm also going to be calling my step-sis about getting my teeth all yanked and getting those dentures. I'm done with em. As good as I'm feeling right now, I can't imagine that I won't feel twice as good when they're out and the infections that lie underneath my gums are gone for good.

I'm actually going to ask about how much it would cost to get a 2nd set... yanno, my "goin out" dentures. I'm not sure how well they're going to clean up with the smoking and the coffee, so it might be nice to have a 2nd shiny set to wear out when I'm getting dressed up for something. :)

The great thing about doing it right now is I think it shouldn't be a problem having them done on my first day off and recovering before I have to go back to work a week later. I probably won't even miss any days.

So my car will be fixed and my teeth problems should be over very soon. If Step-Sis wasn't yankin' my Step-Dad's chain, I should still be up over $2,000 in the bank since I started working after all of this is done.

Maybe I'll have A/C by next summer. :)

Interesting that you should say that. "Numeracy" is located in a specific part of the brain, usually on the right-hand side for right-handed people.

Both unnoticed injuries on the left-hand side?

It's never-ending! The biggest problem is Bermuda grass ... it spreads, and spreads, and spreads. It spreads by seeds, it spreads by runners, and it spreads by roots. Plus, it has deep "storage" roots that if you don't get every last little piece out will re-sprout. Not entirely responsive to Roundup either. GREAT if you're trying to establish and maintain a lawn, not so great if you're trying to get rid of it! One thing I learned this year ... don't let it get ahead of you! Best to whack it when it's still a little problem! But I AM trying to clean up the front yard for additional planting. I hope that the intentional plants will crowd out the unintentional ones.

Last week one of the dog-walking neighbors came over to help me with my irrigation valve. He brought a very nice-looking tool bucket with some pipe wrenches that looked like he meant business! So he started, as we did, with channel locks, then graduated to one pipe wrench and then graduated to two pipe wrenches (like we did)... but then he did something that we didn't do ... he shifted his stance, braced the lower pipe wrench against his shin, grabbed the upper one with both hands, and gave it a very expert sharp yank .... and freed up the backflow valve, which gave him access to doing the same thing on the actuator valve.

I made a comment like I'd like to think it was the Liquid Wrench that I sprayed on it that made the difference, but I think it's all technique

And he paused for a second and said Well, I did work for the gas company for a number of years.

Oh, that's right... he did! No wonder his pipe-wrenching skills are so developed! Well, it sure saved me a whole lot of trouble having to cut and re-solder/ re-glue pipes!

BTW ... he is one of those people that Hillary would like to call "deplorable" ... yanno, a Trump voter, a white retirement-aged guy from Georgia ... except he's a hardworking guy, even tho he's retired he helps his friends out around the neighborhood with their household repairs and yardwork, especially a retired Taiwanese lady who is his (Japanese) wife's friend who is recovering from cancer. As far as I can tell he's a lot less deplorable than quite a number of people on this board.

"Hide"??? How can I possibly "hide"?? It's an open thread on an open board. WTH are you yammering about?

By way of explanation: THOSE PHOTOS were introduced into a thread where SHINY was decrying the Trump Admin's treatment of minors. It was, I thought, an appropriate response to his post in that thread.

THIS THREAD is about personal things .... what's happening in our lives, what we're doing, what we've learned in our daily lives. I, for one, thought JO's metal-bending skills were awesome and would have loved to see more pix and read more about how he did it. You're welcome to join any time; it's a free board after all. So, just to be a little garden-obssessive ... the mite problem ... which is showing up on the avocados, tomatoes, and eggplant ... was probably exacerbated by lack of water. I flooded the trees and my garden. The trees are showing nice healthy new growth, the veggie garden is still struggling. So yesterday I sprayed all the undersides of the various plant-leaves that I could reach (to knock the mites down), and today I sprayed whatever the hose-end sprayer could reach with Neem oil. I also ordered a bottle of Amblyseius fallacis for the veggie garden, and two bottles of Neoseiulus californicus for the avocados.

I think I better flood the trees at least once a month, so early September and early October would be the next scheduled irrigations.

THUGR, this is the only off-topic response that you're going to get from me in this thread: If I post pictures of those kids, it's too extreme for your taste, but if I post about tomatoes I don't care "enough". The ONLY reason why you're here is because you're an asshole and a troll. That's very, very clear to everyone here, even to your so-called "friends".

So I was looking out the backyard and saw what looked like a squirrel with a really, really skinny tail. I thought it was just an abnormal squirrel until I saw a second one gamboling thru the avocado tree!

RATS???

My first thought was tree rate AKA roof rat. But these guys had furry tails, I'm pretty sure, so internet search identified them as some kind of "wood rat". Kind of like this ...

Like I said to Jack. I must have been getting something from the basement or putting something away and banged it and never noticed it. Happens. A few weeks ago, I put a small cut into my left hand and never noticed it either.

Yes, and I've done things like that on my right hand too but it does seem to be the left that gets the brunt of it.

Sounds like an interesting plant, but a b&tch to get rid of. Good luck!

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Sounds good Jack.

He will no doubt return to have something to say to me about this, but I will not reply to him here. If nobody else does, he will eventually stop. Even if he doesn't, just keep ignoring him.

EDITED TO ADD:

Yes. I agree with your thoughts on the matter. If T would like to put down his dukes and tell us a little bit about anything positive going on in his own life he is more than welcome to do so.

I saw two mice the other day at work. Strange thing since I'd never seen one before that and I haven't seen one since. They must do a real good job at pest control there, because I'd think the environment would be perfect for rats to set up shop.

Got some extra time at work again today, but my feet started to hurt again after two longer than normal days so I didn't push it with 4 more to go.

Big manager today told me he wished I had more days available so he could put me on the remodel crew. He only wants people who know how to "merchandise". Good to hear, but there's no more pay in it, so it's not for me.

I think when winter comes around I might start looking for a better paying job. I'm not seriously looking to go anywhere else because I've made this a pretty good gig for myself, but it's been a while since I tried throwing my hat in the ring. There's no reason not to look and maybe I'd have a much easier time in the interview process than I used to have since any job I'd be applying for would just really be for shits and giggles and I'd have no reason to be nervous.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

LOL about the spelling. I totally hear ya Brenda. Thank goodness for the internet and spellcheck being integrated into just about every program these days. I always right click on the squiggly lines that Firefox tells me are misspelled. It's usually the same words that I constantly misspell over and over again too. Eventually I do start spelling them right, so it happens less frequently over time. It's actually a source of pride when I use some words that are spelled correctly, but must be too "big" to be in Firefox's spellcheck dictionary.

I didn't get a lot of sleep yesterday for some reason, so my feet hurt a bit more at the end of the night than usual. Kinda snapped on two guys who regularly milk the last few hours of the shift, especially on a night like tonight when the "regular" work wasn't enough to fill the entire shift. I asked them if they needed something to do, called them on their bullshit and told them what needed to be done.

Somehow, big boss heard about this and thanked me. I told him that I know that in my position I can't really be paid much more money, and I manage not to dwell on that at all when I'm constantly working and I don't have to be around anybody who isn't working, but it eats at me when I'm busting my ass and I have no position of authority to tell people to get to work or just punch out and go home early.

This all actually kicked off a 20 minute conversation on the clock about managing and I looked him dead in the eye and said "when are we going to have that conversation?". He said that up until this point he didn't even realize that I had any interest in moving up in the company and that we will be having that conversation when the remodel is over and the dust settles.

I let him know that I remember telling him that I still don't have a five year plan when I answered that question in the interview... and he knows enough about my financial situation and how I feel about working for peanuts beyond paying for basic essentials and putting some in the bank. I think he thought that as long as he was working with my schedule right that I didn't have any desire for any more. That might be true in the end if I find out what a possible plan going forward here is, but I'd like to know what my options are in the future here. I think he's a great manager and would love to work under him if the conditions were right.

Interesting times here for sure. In the mean time, just going to keep doing what I've been doing and I'll try to get a little more sleep tonight. :)

Do Right, Be Right. :)

SIX, you have a manager made of gold, and you and he seem to be on the same page when it comes to "how to get things done". Most managers are so far away from the actual work that they've forgotten how it gets done, and turn to weird little metrics to measure employee performance or they get all tweaked about maintaining their (purposeless) "authority".

Yeah. We've all had our share of bad managers, and even some terrible ones, but I have been blessed with some pretty great ones over the years as well. I'm actually really impressed with him. This hasn't just been an opportunity for me to get exposure and for others to see what I'm capable of, but I'm getting to see that from the different managers and I feel that I can learn a lot of stuff from this guy if we decide that it might be a good idea going forward.

We've talked about my anxiety issues that got as bad as borderline agoraphobia at one point. I'm not going to pretend that they don't exist anymore, but they definitely don't hold close to that power over me at this point in my life. Truth be told it is still actually kind of hard going back in after having 8 days off, but that goes away usually by first break. Maybe if I was working full time during the day in a management or semi-management position under somebody like this guy than it wouldn't even be a factor anymore.

I don't think I'd ever join some sort of training program to be a manager in a new store that I didn't know anybody, at least to start with, but I actually find myself entertaining the possibility of a future working alongside these people I know and have been building a relationship with and it doesn't sound half bad.

There was a lot more to our conversation that I won't get into here, at least right now, but there does seem to be some possibilities on the horizon.

Never one to get my hopes up about anything, I won't let myself get too enthusiastic about any of this right now. I'm kind of keeping it in the same realm I would imagining what I'd do with all the riches if I won the Billion dollar Powerball I play once in a blue moon.

My spelling fault was to stick an "s" in your name instead of an "a". So, I had to go back just because it bugged me. I can be very bad at spelling simple things but something difficult I can do easily. And I have no idea why.

Think we all have days like that when we can't sleep. Know I had one a couple of nights ago. Just one of those things.

You are doing great Jack and it is good that your manager notices it.
