Some people can just never be satisfied, I'll tell ya. 3 people today were complaining about the rain on their way into work as I was leaving. It's going to be 50 degrees outside today. That's 70 degrees above the lowest lows we had for an almost unheard of cold stretch this early in the season here.

And they're bitching about rain?

I'm happy.

I'm waiting to hear about the flooded basements in the WNY region. It always seems to follow .... snow ... rain/melt ... basement flood. Good thing we brought in some heavy-duty Penco shelving and put all our sis's stuff at least 1' above the old water-line!

Have to say ... visited during one of those spring melt episodes. Altho I used to live in the area, I don't recall ever standing on a bridge when the river was 3' below the pavement, looking at small trees and ice floes rushing downstream. Pretty damn powerful, if you ask me. Just a little reminder from mother nature how utterly powerless we are, when all is said and done!

Montecito mudslide

It looks pretty flat to me, I would have never figured it as an "at risk" area.

My 50 degree days were nice. Rain and all. Not a white patch anywhere. Got my snowblower in working order again today and burned off the bad gas I accidentally left in there that was the culprit. Damn thing ran for almost 2 hours on idle, so I really borked it and left a lot in there. No wonder it wouldn't start in the cold. Choked up a few huge plumes of soot when it started up. Should be good for whatever snow this monster winter has in store if it decides to change from frigid cold to unusually high precipitation.

I'm sure mother nature has at least one more winter blast in store for you, SIX, so good thing that the snowblower is in working order! I hope your sump pump is too.

BRENDA, I found a satellite before/ after picture of the area; the Thomas Fire (which wound up being the largest in white-recorded CA history) burned all of the coastal mountains above Montecito; I'm sure that was a critical factor in causing mudslide. (logging is another) Also, there was an established stream which lubricated the slide. It looks to me like the areas that were hit were more or less at the bottom of the coastal range, but with that much water and mud coming down I guess it had to go somewhere.

Just like there seems to be no such thing as "too urban to burn" it looks like there's no such thing as "too flat for mudslides". I guess it's easy to feel safe in well-established developments, but that would be a mistake.

Glad to hear it Brenda. :)

Right after those two really warm days we had another abysmal week of nights in the low single digits that ended just 2 nights ago. Forecast looks fairly normal for the next 10 or so days.

My power company says the average temp by me was 18 degrees for the last month, which is the lowest I've ever had in 6 years of living here by about 4-5 degrees. I used about 40 more therms this month on heat than I did in February last year, which is typically my worst month. Here's hoping that February isn't as bad this year to offset this heat bill, which will mark the largest one I've had since living here.

Oh... early spring would be so nice. It's crazy that it was in the high 20's or low 30's on breaks tonight and it feels warm to me when I'm out smoking.

I didn't notice what my bill was until just this morning when I got home. For some reason they don't have the actual bill up yet on the site, but they do have what I owe. It's a lot smaller than it should be, given how much energy I used. I'm downright confused right now because it actually should be about 40 or 50 bucks more than it is, easily. I don't do the budget plan... I pay as I go.

I'm really curious to see the bill. I can't believe that the good people at the power company were cutting the little guy a break during that terrible month of freezing weather?

Nah... couldn't be.

Could it?

Never know Jack. You never know.

Well... you do if you look at the details of the bill, which I admittedly never really have done before.

Huh...

Gas supply charges stayed relatively the same. Too much math for me to bother with since it varies per calendar month and my bill comes somewhere during the later half of the month, but I'd say that it's roughly the same.

Pipeline transport and storage are way down though... but that's not a huge part of the bill. 4 cents per therm only adds up to a savings of around 2 bucks.

This is my highest bill in the last two years I can go back and look. We've had pretty decent winters around here until this month for a while. Too bad I can't still go back and look at the two bills I've had over 200 bucks. I know I've never had a month this cold on record since I've been here, so I'm surprised it's so low. I'd love to be able to compare this to whatever they were charging for the gas back then.

Natural Gas prices must be low right now, at least in my area.

Go me!

Basement actually. The only service I am missing is heat. I have water and electricity. Also bathroom and a kitchen along with a bedroom. I get internet but she likes to turn her signal off every so often.
What it comes down to is this place is falling apart. I have walls that are starting to crumble in spots. Cracks in them. A couple of bad spots in my ceiling that look like they are going to come down.
I'll explain more later but I want to head out while it is not raining but I will have my umbrella with me.- BRENDA

I have to wonder ... are these people so impoverished that they can't afford to fix up their own property, and are prepared to see it crumble under them? Land-rich but money-poor? There must be a story there!

The space where I am was badly built. They had no inspector come in and make sure everything was sound. As I have said it is illegal and so they haven't got any building permits or paid any city fees or anything like that for renovating, I guess you would call it. Also the house sits partway up a hill. There is also a sub basement under me. Doing all this "renovating" has basically ruined this house. The floor where I am isn't stable and is slanting. My landlady's idiot husband built a little prefab storage unit under the back stairs that lead up to their balcony to try and shore up the backstairs.
What boobs! It sounds like they ruined their best investment through a combination of greed and ... well, greed.

I realize it's uncomfortable ... that said, do you feel that the place is going to come down on your head? Is it a fire-trap? (no exits) Is the wiring bad? Is the heat - what little there is - from a gas furnace?

I guess I'm asking, is it so dangerous something could kill you in the short-term? It seems so shoddy, it COULD be THAT bad.

And that's concerning to me.

OH ... OK.

Just, ... uhm, I know you're doing your best with what you have. But do you think you could get yourself a nice, loud, battery-powered fire alarm? I used to be pretty dismissive of that, until I saw firefighter training videos. It takes no time at all - less than a minute - for a fire to get too big for a fire extinguisher. And 3 - 5 minutes to get to flashover in a room - where all the gases are superheated and just waiting for more oxygen. It was truly scary. If you only have one way out, that could be a problem. Unless you can come up with a plan to quickly get out of a window, assuming there are any.

I really wish you could get out of there somehow Brenda. I've lived in some very questionable places before when times got rough, but I've never felt that I could possibly die from any of them.

Maybe Second could help? I don't know how you feel about accepting charity though.

I can't even give you advice on the situation. I have no idea what Canada's laws or any of their governmental support programs for people with disabilities, and it sounds like you are really living there because you have no other alternative. I don't think that causing trouble for your landlady would do anything for you other than put you out on the street.

I have a few days off of work. Maybe I can look into it a little bit. I won't make any promises that my effort will be fruitful, but maybe I can help in some small way.

Well I have to admit that I feel better that it's only a year away. What happens when you turn 55 that would change your circumstances?

I don't mean to pry, so please feel free to tell me that you're uncomfortable talking about this, especially since this is a public forum, but are you considered in BC to be a PWD already?

I haven't seen anything so far that looks like it will pay for much in the way of housing, but I did find this:

Quote:

Co-operative Housing Share Purchase

If you are moving into co-op housing, you may be eligible for money to pay for your membership share. You will have to repay this money when you move or leave assistance.

The having to repay doesn't seem to be a very good option, but depending on your circumstances and what you think might happen in the future, it may be something to look into if it means that for the next year you could at least find something where you weren't in danger.

There was also this:

Quote:

Moving, Transportation, and Living Costs

You may be able to get money to cover your transportation and living expenses if you move or need transportation for:

Starting a confirmed job, if you aren't eligible for supports from WorkBC
Attending a court hearing when receiving family maintenance services
Getting a court-ordered paternity blood test
Finding a new place to live because your current housing has been sold or condemned

That underlined part is something I still probably wouldn't force if I were you, but since that is out of your hands it might be good to at least look into this program if something non-life threatening were to happen and you quickly lost your current living space if it were condemned.

There was also this:

Quote:

Security Deposit

If you rent your housing, you could get help for your security deposit. You will have to pay this money back.

Again, you'd have to pay that money back, but in a pinch it could be a life saver. I don't know how security deposits generally work around you, but they're all over the map by me. I've lived in one place that only had a $100 security deposit and a free month's rent, and I've also had to pay two times the monthly rent for a security deposit before. Knowing how to apply for this quickly might really help you out if an emergency happens.

I'm assuming you probably already know all about all of this, and I'm not being of much help here. It doesn't seem as thought the program for people with disabilities in the BC is as good as it is if you are fortunate and persistent enough to be deemed eligible in Illinois. (I'm not going to say "In America" because I only know how it works in Illinois and have no idea how it works in other states).

Everything that I quoted here can be found: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/family-social-supports/services-for
-people-with-disabilities

There seems to be quite a few different programs there, but none that I didn't already comment on that help with housing. There may be something that benefits your current circumstances in other ways though that might be able to free up some cash for you.

I really hope that you can get out of there one way or the other. Whatever turning 55 does, I'm looking forward to hearing that it will at least put you in a safe spot.

I am under PWD in BC.

I've looked at some of those programs but they are for Families. 1 person in BC doesn't make a family even if I am considered disabled.

I have transportation costs covered and my meds.

BC Housing already knows that this place is a disaster but they aren't any help unless she outright threatens me with eviction.

I have gotten help with damage or security deposits before, so I know about that one.

Damn... Yeah, I figured you probably knew all of this already. I was hoping there might be something in there you didn't know about that could help out.

I'm surprised that you say BC Housing already knows the situation of the house though. I'm not surprised they aren't helping out at all because it doesn't sound like they help out much with housing for single people who are disabled in the BC, but what surprises me is that their home hasn't been condemned yet.

That wouldn't help you at all, and that's why I suggested not creating any waves. I'm just really surprised there isn't more government interaction between agencies. If one government body here were to be aware of a situation like that I can almost guaranty that in any situation the local Code Enforcement would be at the house ASAP to force an investigation on the structural integrity of the home and it would be condemned shortly afterward if it is as you say it is.

In any event, 55 can't come soon enough. I'm sure you won't be getting anything close to a palace, but I hope that the housing assistance for seniors more closely reflects the housing my brother was able to get into. It's a pretty spacious apartment for one person in a building that is secure since you have to have a key to even enter it. I'm positive under Section 8 that the entire building is up to code.

I did just think of something though. When you turn 55, you may want to consider moving away from the area that you're in if it's a more dense population. My brother would have been on a waiting list for housing assistance for eternity if he had stayed anywhere near Chicago. He had to go some place about 200 miles south and the wait wasn't long at all after he had been deemed disabled by the state. I'm not sure if that would be an issue for Seniors or not in the BC, but it might be something for you to consider if there happens to be a waiting list when it comes time.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

It burns me when I hear about people like that taking advantage of others and not paying for it.

Part of me wants you to tell your landlady that if she doesn't drop the rate back down until next year that you will demand an inspection be done on the home after you leave so the place does get inspected and subsequently condemned. Then again, that's probably not a great idea. I'm not sure how Canadian, BC or local law goes, but the fact that she hasn't been inspected already when it's known the property has issues leads me to believe that she might have a few friends in relatively high places and the only thing that threatening her would do other than give you a brief moment of satisfaction is being kicked out on your ass and no way to even make sure she's out on hers afterward.

I understand your concerns with transportation. Luckly, at least for now, my dad is very active in checking up with him and staying at his place once about every 3 weeks or so. I'm a little concerned about what will happen when he's no longer able to do that. He has no mobility on his own other than walking and using his scooter, and fortunately he's not afraid of long hauls and is still relatively young, but that too will not last forever.

They do have a program out there that he can call and schedule a ride for important things. I was surprised to hear that since he's so far out in the boonies now.

Would something like this be available to you out of the city for important procedures for you?

https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/transportation/passenger-travel/bus
es-taxis-limos/bus-pass

Quote:

Low-income seniors and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) have access to the BC Bus Pass Program. The pass is valid in communities served by BC Transit or Translink.

Persons with Disabilities can receive a bus pass as part of their disability assistance.

Low-income seniors and other eligible people can access the program at a reduced cost.

A BC Bus Pass is a Compass Card pass that can be used on both BC Transit and TransLink systems throughout the province. HandyDart is not included in this program.

Only you can use your Bus Pass. You cannot lend, give or sell your pass to another person.

It might give you more options of where you'd be able to stay and how quickly you could get a place when the time comes.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

There is something here called the "HandyDart" and you pay for it like a bus. BUT you have to be recommended for the program by your doctor and I don't think mine is ready for me to be using that system just yet. I am still able to walk and get on and off a bus fairly easily. It just depends on how much groceries I am carrying.

My mom didn't start on that program until she was in her late 70s.

Yeah. I knew you said before that you have transportation in the city. I figured that was the bus. The HandyDart sounds like what my brother would be able to schedule.

I get how you feel about "crutches". My step-dad is telling me all the time that I should be taking Aleve for my chronic joint pain but at 38 years old I don't want to be doing that.

If getting into housing for seniors isn't a problem in the city by you and the accommodations are acceptable then it's really a non-issue. Just something to consider if there is a long waiting list or you could get a nicer place outside of the city is all.

Yeah. He can access it. It's not free, but it's actually extremely cheap considering it's too far away from big cities to have any Uber sort of service and the driver needs to be paid and the gas needs to be bought. He's got no need to use it now since my Dad is heavily involved in his life, but he's going to have to to get to the city down the road for medical procedures and such when my Dad's no longer able to do that. I'm hoping that I'll be in a better position to help out when that time comes, but it's around 4-5 hours away from me and I'm nervous driving 30 minutes to work in my current car.

My real concern for my brother is handling paperwork. He's so capable in so many things, and even a lot better at a few things than I'll ever be, but he can't do that for some reason. I hope down the road all of that can be handled online because right now some of it can't and my Dad schedules some of his trips down there to take him 30 miles into the city to sit and wait in government offices half a day to fill out necessary paperwork. I'm actually really good at all of that stuff, but if we're talking about a 10 hour round trip to get it done it's going to add a lot of stress in my life, especially if they mess something up like they always do and then I've got to do the trip a second time a few weeks later.

I get that you can't go to a senior home until you're 55. I doubt that will change. But at least it sounds like it's not like Chicago where you'd be on a waiting list for years before one opened up. It sounds like the only reason it would be beneficial in any way for you to consider moving out of the city would be the possibility that you could get a nicer place, but if that comes at the cost of transportation then it isn't worth it. I hope you get a nice place next year. At least it sounds like it will be safe though, which is the most important thing.

Keep your head up. :)

That was some sort of accident. I don't know what I did. Can someone see if Haken can put my posts back?

I had the same thing happen to my account for "G" Brenda - all posts gone, poof, vanished. Sad! I asked Haken and he said my account had accidentally been tagged as Spam and he'd look into retrieving it. I just now added a note to him about yours. Fingers crossed!

Wow, crazy. Hope it gets fixed. :)

I thought it was strange this morning that somebody replied after I had congratulated Wishy on the good news in the other thread but when I checked the thread my post was the last one even though it said it had a new post several hours later. Was it spam, or another accidental deletion?

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I hope it does too. Freaked me right out as I didn't think I did anything wrong last night when I left the site.

DAMN. So much for setting some help on that.

55. Do your best to hang in there till then, Brenda. I'm sorry I can't help, but I feel for you.

Thanks Kiki.

I have to go in every six months and let BC Housing know what a wreck this place is. So in about April.

Yeah, 55 that is the magic number or unless I find a place willing to rent to me where I don't have to worry about things.

I don't mind the water, but I don't go out much except for work. At least the roads are safe when it's cold, considering the state of my shitbox car.

I'd just like the heat bills to go down a bit. They've been forced to cut my hours back because I'm part time and they've been working me full time for too many weeks.

There's been some developments happening that I'm not going to go into details about, but let's just say that my name has popped up in a few conversations. I'm still not sure if I'd even want to work full time again, but it is nice knowing that my work is being recognized and that I may have some new options to weigh out in the not so distant future.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Oh, and I did figure out what the problem is with my oil leak. It's the oil pump for sure. Possibly only the seal, which would be a real treat.

As soon as it warms up for a stretch of days that I'm going to be off, I'm going to buy both and hope it's just the seal and follow the YouTube instructions. If it's the whole pump, I'm out $75 bucks. If it's just the seal, I'm out about $7 bucks.

Sure beats paying somebody $400-$500 to fix it. :)

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Rain here and fairly heavy this evening. Stupid bus driver wouldn't stop at my stop and I rang the bell in lots of time for him to stop. Idjit.

Yeah... we'll see. Still not sure I even want full time anymore, but they might give me an offer I can't refuse. Even if they don't, I'm pretty sure that I'm going to get the scheduling that I want, which to me might be even more important than money. I don't care if I work every weekend, I just want my days to be scheduled in a row every week. No more of this one night on, one night off BS.

YouTube is amazing for fixing things yourself. I've never been a pro at anything specific, but I'm kind of a jack of all trades type so I should be able to stumble through this one although the most advanced car maintenance I've ever done before was changing the spark plugs. I'm probably going to have to buy some new tools for this, but that's okay. It'll still be just a fraction of what I'd pay somebody else to fix it and then they're mine if I ever need them again.

Sorry to hear about that bus driver. Spring is right around the corner. :)

Getting what you want at work can be good.

I know what you mean. I've looked up things on YouTube for this place. Just unplugging sinks and stuff like that. Little things that I can do by myself without having to deal with my idiot landlady.

There is always one bus driver every so often who can't pay any attention to bells ringing and people make comments as they get off the bus. Which I did.

Well... right and wrong. CC is G, but there was an explanation for it even though we all missed it until now.

I can't call CC a sockpuppet on one hand and then say that my sixstringjoker profile wasn't a sockpuppet on the other hand.

My apologies to CC/G for calling CC a sockpuppet the other day. Not that it matters now, but in the future I would recommend maybe putting something in the signature at least temporarily saying who the new name belongs to to avoid confusion if the new name isn't blatantly obvious like mine was.

Do Right, Be Right. :)
