we are fortunate not to have had any megafires during the longest hottest heat wave on record..I snarkily told sis maybe bc everything has burned up already.

Anyway, the heat wave has BROKEN! We got a negligible but unseasonal 1/4" of rain. This storm huffed and puffed and then fizzled! But at least it's 85 out, not 95 or 105.

Still smoky around me but I didn't find it overly warm out even though the temp is sitting around 86F.

All done for today along with a little garbage and recycling taken out. Having a nice long sit down now.

12 hours today spent clearing out a hoard straight into a dumpster and sweeping up and vacuuming up roughly 40 pounds of mouse crap.

My friends are lucky friends.

I going to eat dinner now. At 2:00AM. Then I'm going to burn my clothes.

Just a Sunday in the smoke which at times I can smell in my apartment even with all the windows closed. Sun is trying to come through it all.

Yeah. Not sure if you remember, but I know I must have mentioned the pigs living in his house that he was renting out and their hoarding behavior. After TWO FREAKIN' YEARS he finally got them out of the house last night. (The timing of the Covid BS really screwed him).

I was there again all day long today and we still haven't cleaned it all out. Filled up the biggest dumpster on the market and used every square inch of space in it and he's still going to have to get a smaller dumpster to take care of the rest they left behind.

Poor guy has so much work ahead of him bringing that house back up to code let alone making it ready for a sale.

Quote:

Just OOC ...you don't have to tell me if you don't want to ... WHERE was the hoard???

Every square inch of the house, but at least they cleaned out most of it on the main two floors before they left. Still took us about an hour just to get the stuff on the main floors out today, and got almost all of it out of the basement.

I also ripped up the rest of the carpet he hadn't gotten to because I said the smell is never going to go away no matter how many fans he has on or how long he keeps the windows open until all that bad crap is out.

Then I told him we had to get both of the refrigerators out of there while he had me there since I don't think he could have done it on his own and I didn't want his dad helping him with it before they lost the dumpster. There had to be $800 worth of food we threw out. Both fridges were absolutely stuffed to the gills. It killed me to throw away a full freezer full of stuff that was probably good, but there were tons of dead gnats and flies and mouse crap even in the fridge. The stuff in the fridge part was gross and moldy though.

Twice I told him he'd need about 20 traps too, and by the next day he'd have 20 dead mice and he'd need to re-set all of them until they stop catching anything. He didn't believe me since we hadn't seen a mouse the whole time and figured after we get all the stuff out they'd just leave. I told him it doesn't work that way. Later in the day I said "is that a bird outside or a mouse?". He said it was a bird... hopefully. Later I heard it again and told him nah dude, you got mice that fled upstairs because of all the activity.

As we were leaving, I was outside and he was finishing locking up and I heard him yell. I thought he'd hurt himself and ran inside and he said he saw a mouse.

So good... Mouse traps are on his shopping list now.

Quote:

Your friend is lucky to have you help out!

Yeah... Second most disgusting thing I've ever done after gutting all the mold out of my basement.

And it's not even done yet...

I don't even understand how people can live like that. There's mouse shit on their kitchen table too.

And the nerve of people to destroy a house that doesn't even belong to them too.

Got my scuttle hole finished in the porch. Now we can finish putting up drywall and I'll still have an access panel to get underneath if I ever have to.

It was my opportunity to get down there for the first time in nearly 3 years since my friend came over and we fixed the floor. Aside from one little part at a corner that is giving me some minor concern, everything looks just as good as the day we finished the work if you don't count the spiders and spider webs. No smell down there either.

I'm beat, so I was happy when my friend's dad said he wasn't feeling it today either. Hopefully he's here tomorrow and we get the rest of the drywall up and start mudding everything. I'll be doing that myself if he can't make it tomorrow though.

Hopefully I hear about my car today. The guy does good work at much cheaper shop rates than other places, and I hate bothering him while he's working since he mans the phones too. I'll probably have to call him later today if I don't hear anything though.

Since I can't put up any drywall until my friend's dad is here and he takes a look and gives me his opinion on whether or not we should double up on the joists at the end while they're still easy to get to, I think I'll get out in my garage and start putting a bunch of tools and other stuff back in their place. It's a mess out there with all the projects I've been doing. If we need to get to a table saw today it would be a chore just to move things out of the way to get to it.

I've got to call my aunt and let her know I can't come out to help at Grandma's next weekend either since I've got to go out and help my friend get the rest of that filth out of his house first. Once I know that the bulk of the dangerous stuff is out of there and that his dad isn't going to take it upon himself to go clean it up since it's still there I can get out to grams.

Now that the weather has cooled down to something reasonable I managed a couple of hours of weeding, harvesting watering today. I think I'm going to make homemade tomato sauce and freeze it for the winter. It has a more distinct flavor than store-bought stuff, so I add the homemade stuff to it to flavor it up.

Not much of a harvest this year bc late planting and Dr appts (leading to a certain amt of neglect) plus that 10-day hot spell, put a damper on production. But my peppers did better this year than previous years. Smaller than store bought but much much sweeter.

The Early Girls are doing well. My other varieties still aren't producing. They're very long- season tomatoes planted late, and were JUST beginning to flower when the heat wave struck. But they're growing robustly which is telling me that they would do well if planted earlier.

We had garden okra in our ham and veggie soup yesterday, first time ever. Also heat-loving and long season but worth planting next year.

Finished the antibiotics the dentist gave me today. And my mouth seems to be healing really well.

Only one thing with this dentist and the pharmacy, they each wanted to give me codeine. I can't have it.

Though I will say the dentist office have learned to stop asking me if I am in pain when I have to go back and double check something. Screw up on the billing, their fault.

Trap door.

I need access down there in case anything ever goes awry again. 3 years later it looks good, so it will probably be fine. But I didn't want to leave myself with the only option getting down there to either cut a hole in the floor later or destroy new drywall and trim to do it.

Got the garage as clean as I could with all of the stuff from the shed still in there until I'm ready to put it all back.

Friend's dad came over late in the afternoon and we got the rest of the drywall put up and the 1st coat of mud on it all.

Tomorrow morning before he gets here I'm going to use the spray foam to insulate the windows and do some repairs to the ceiling. We're going to pick up the 1x4 we need to frame out the window jambs and get them cut to size so I can prime and paint them before they're installed. I can get that paint started while he's mudding the 2nd coat tomorrow.

Very exciting.

Still no word on my car though. Getting a little annoyed about that one right about now.

We got a 2nd coat of mud up today after he got here. Before that I cut the drywall down around the windows to the studs and I cleaned off the ceiling tiles and spray primed any of the damaged spots and after my friend's dad patched them you can't even tell they were damaged.

Got all the wood we needed for the window jambs and ripped them down before calling it a night. Then I hung out with one of my friends tonight.

Good day.

Should have the jambs painted and installed and the walls and ceiling primed by the end of Friday.

Busy busy busy here. I've only managed to get out to do yardwork a couple of days since it cooled down, I've been tied up helping hubby get ready for his upcoming surgery. I keep thinking all I need to do is X, Y, and Z and then I can get outside, but some other demand always seems to pop up.

well, I did make three pints of garden tomato sauce, cooked down to about half, for later in the year. It'll be nice to get fresh-tasting tomato sauce in winter. Now I gotta get cracking.

oh BTW BRENDA, we started the first episode of season 7 of Shetland yesterday, woo hoo! I don't know if you've seen it yet so I don't want to post any spoilers but when it becomes available there and you can talk about it, let me know!

My friend's dad wasn't feeling well today and didn't come by. He probably won't be here tomorrow either, and then I'm out helping dehoard and mousify the house again after that. Oh well... There's always next week.

I got all the jambs broke, primered and painted with 2 coats of high gloss white. I think I will give it a light scuff sand tomorrow morning and put another coat on them. And once they dry I'll start painting door/window casings since I'm all set up in the garage for that now. It's awesome painting in the garage with all that light.

I mowed the lawn today, which was nice. I didn't think I'd get a chance to do that until next week sometime. It needed it.

I also got the 2x6 backer boards up behind where I will be mounting a TV out in the porch today out of 6 pieces of value wood I bought yesterday.

I think I'll clean the shed real good after I get the final coat of paint on the jambs tomorrow so I can paint the studs on the wall that meets the porch (where the TV backer board is installed). I want to give them a few coats so they look nice before I put up insulation. That will be huge, because that insulation has taken up so much room since late 2019 and it will finally be up where it belongs.

Yeah. It's a ton of work. Making the most of what's left of the nice weather after the getting-sick speedbump a while back.

But I woke up to some bad news this morning...

My friend's dad went to the hospital last night. He said his leg was swollen on Thursday and yesterday he told me it had gone down. The nurse told him to keep off his feet and keep them elevated until the doctor could see him, but he still went to my friend's house to clean (upstairs... I made him PROMISE me if he wasn't going to listen to me and the nurse that he wouldn't do anything in the basement and let me handle it when I got there).

I guess his legs swelled up again and my friend's mom took him to the hospital last night. They're running some tests now.

He's a great man. I hope they figure it out and everything goes right for him.Z

My friend was still going to pick me up (since I still don't have my car) but I told him not to feel like he's obligated to go out there today just because we had made plans. He's going to call me in a while after he thinks about it.

Oh no! Too bad for your friend's dad. And your friend, of course!

Not sure from your description of it's one or both legs. If one leg, especially if it's sore and kinda purple-ish, they would probably be looking for a blood clot in a return blood vessel - a vein. He could have a DVT - deep vein thrombosis. But normally ppl get that from sitting long periods- truck drivers, airplane travelers etc

If it's both legs ... well, best not to speculate. One possiblity that's an easy fix, tho: If he's been drinking a lot of Powerade, it contains phosphate which is very hard for the kidneys to clear and causes a LOT of water retention. Hubby was drinking three bottles of Powerade when he was building the beds is summer, and his feet looked like sausages. When he stopped drinking it, they went back to normal.

I'm a little disappointed that a nurse would turn him away w/o running any tests. I hope he gets better soon.

I'm not exactly sure what the situation is...

He's told me it was one leg that was swollen, then I've heard it was both legs that were swollen. He's in great shape for his age because he never stops working, but he has had a few health issues from time to time as well.

He's in the right place now. I actually feel better that he's in the hospital than not in the hospital. When he didn't come over to help me on Thursday because his nurse told him to put his feet up and not do anything, he tells me his sister in-law came over and needed some sort of step built with lumber she brought and he spent an hour doing that. Then when his swelling went down yesterday he went to his son's house to do some cleaning and ended up in the hospital. He's stubborn... and I know about stubborn.

The nurse didn't turn him away. He talked to her on the phone and said the doctor would call him. The doctor DIDN'T call him. He/She is the one I'm pissed off at.

My buddy told me his dad is getting a lot of sleep and plenty of fluids. That was this afternoon. I don't want to bother him again today unless he calls me to talk. We're still on for working on his house tomorrow as far as I know. If I can get a full day in I should be able to get all the toxic stuff out of that basement.

Very productive day today...

I got 8 door/window casings with a finish coat of paint drying in my garage now. Monday I'll bring them as well as the jambs into my basement for staging and get another 8 casings painted (if nothing else comes up).

I spent a lot of time washing the walls, studs and large shelving units in my shed with water and a sponge before starting any paint. 6 five gallon buckets were black by the time it was done. Without going into detail of exactly what's been done out there, I got a gallon and a quarter of paint up. I'm kind of working my way around the room after starting with the wall that will have the insulation for the porch on the other side, and a good deal into painting those shelves. It's going to look awesome when it's done.

Got all the STUFF out of the basement finally at my friends. But he had to call it a short day so there's still a ton of cleaning to do. I told him that next time he has me out to do it is going to be the last time I'm going to be in that level of disgusting, so he'd better make it a long enough day to count. I'm ready to burn these clothes and shoes.

But getting home early had one benefit. I was able to get 8 more door/window casings on the horses and get the first coat of paint on them. That will be 16 of the 18 I need to do the porch, so the last round for now will be the 2 I still need and all the baseboard.

Hi guys. Just checking in... been busy organizing stuff with dear daughter. Since organizing isn't her strong suit it takes longer, but we're getting there!
