Oh, so nice!

Do you need a proof-reader? Me!! Me me!! How about me!!

It is nice. I don't know if I need one yet. In theory it should be okay from the last time I looked at it. But it needs to be retyped and made ship-shape before it hits the publisher circuit again.

That's it. I've hit my gross quota for the day...

If moving stuff out of two rooms into other rooms so you have a work area for half a day doesn't seem like enough fun, pulling up a floor in the middle of winter with closed windows when there are apparently allergens that are driving you crazy will really make your day fly by.

Well...

Now I know why the vinyl floor was "binding" by the legs of the stove so I could never pull it out to clean back there. The top checkered layer was actually individual tiles and not a full sheet like I thought they were. It's a full sheet UNDER those tiles though.

So how did they do the stove???

Put it right on top of the first layer sheet after putting some superficial tiles down that you wouldn't see past, and then once they had the stove in place THEY TILED OVER AND AROUND THE GORRAM LEGS!!!!

I kid you not. I've literally seen it all now.

Who knows how many years before I moved in that stove has sat there?

And althoguh I haven't had a mouse problem in a few years and I'm fully armed to take care of any activity immediately upon knowing about it in the future, behind that stove was always a hotbed of activity when I did have mice because I would hear metal "clanking". I think it was probably the flex tube from the gas being banged around when they were back there.

Last thing I did today was move the stove from the wall, and I was mortified. I'm not even going to tell you what's back there. I'm also not even going to clean it up tonight.

I think I'll go take a shower, wash my clothes, pack my bags and burn the house down.

Uggggghhhh....

But really... That's been back there for god knows how long now. It can last one more night and I'll make sure to start the day tomorrow with the proper hazmat gear before the sanitation process commences.

Honestly... Who tiles in a stove so you can't move it?

Anybody have any idea how I could make my stove "mobile" and get some wheel action on the bottom? I'm also wondering if they make something that you can put on the floor underneath the stove and on top of tile.

I'm really considering doing ceramic tile in the kitchen, and the last thing I want to be doing is dragging around rusty old legs on top of them when I get to it.

Like this:

I'm not recommending these, they were literally just the first picture.

duck-duck: appliance roller glider OR appliance roller wheels OR similar terms till you get what you're looking for.

If you're going to do real tile (stone, brick, ceramic, cement) not faux(vinyl) tile, and you want to later move the appliance, you may need to put down some masonite on the path; because I can imagine that the weight concentrated by the wheels might crack the tile. Also, here in SoCal, I got them with locking wheels in case of earthquakes, but I can see how it might be useful in general to keep things from shifting around if you lean on them or some such.

Well, I got my files moved so I can give them a real good going through because from just a quick glance they need it. I am pleased to see that I found a couple of items that I thought had gotten lost over the years. So that's good. I had written a story for a friend years ago and that needs going over just to make it look better. I wrote it specifically for her, so I won't be trying to get it published or anything. I know some stuff has to be shredded which will get put into a pile. That was a good accomplishment for today.

I got you beat. The first REAL apartment that we moved into (student housing) had apparently been rented to a succession of Indian (from India) male grad students who liked to cook with lots of grease at high temperatures. LOTS of grease. HIGH temperatures.

When we moved in, I literally had to scrape the grease off the cupboards with a paint scraper, and they were continuous peels of grease, not little-bitty nibbles. Also, paint came off of the (metal) cabinets along with the grease, because the grease was such a good solvent.

When I moved the stove out, the floor (which was genuine linoleum) had been so saturated with oil it literally came up like putty. When I realized I was scraping flooring as well as grease, I stopped right there and switched to floor cleaner, just ot get most of the crud off while preserving the flooring. At that point I decided never to look under the stove again.

Then I had to scrub the entire ceiling and walls, which ... it turns out ... were NOT brown, but pale blue. But since I couldn't wash ALL of the grime off evenly, of course I had to repaint everthing. Twice.

Even with all of the scraping, scrubbing, and painting, every time it rained for a year afterwards, the kitchen smelled like curry.

Spoke with the doc today, and yes, it is VERY posible to get aches and pains and fatigue with sinus infection!

She wanted to know what I had done to FINALLY get rid of the infection, and when I described all of the things I wound up doing said "You did good".

But in order to keep from getting infections over and over again, I need to keep up with my follow-ups with the surgeon, because maybe she has some whoopie-doopie antibiotic rinse or something.

And I CAN SMELL AGAIN!!

Not like before, but I stuck my nose over the nutmeg jar and allspice jar (while I was cooking) and I could smell them enough to ID what they were. YAY!

Cool. I'll have to do some research before I make any floor plans. It will be a while before I think about doing the floor, so I'll have some time to put a good plan together.

I could just put more vinyl down I suppose, but I think it's just tacky looking.

In the mean time, I will be buying a longer flex pipe for the stove, assuming that it's not against any codes to do so. The one back there is pretty short, and in order to do the work I need to do behind it I would have to detach the stove while I'm working and re-attach it before I cook every day with the length that's back there now. I'm actually not very confident that I can even remove all the existing vinyl under it without taking it apart the damn flex pipe is so short.

I was thinking that though sinuses aren't "seen" very well by the body in terms of immune response, they're awfully close to the brain in terms of cytokines.

FWIW Jack - while there may be a lot of allergenic stuff back there, the thing I worry about most that one can catch from mice is Hanta virus which is about 50% fatal - but it degrades in the environment and becomes non-infectious after about 3 days.

Not to say you shouldn't protect yourself, but at least if you haven't had any recent visitors you don't have to worry about Hanta virus.

And I'M SO HAPPY FOR YOU THAT YOU CAN SMELL AGAIN!

So, I'm gonna fly something past you.

I think the thing that ultimately worked was hypertonic (2x conc) saline packets. I had a couple of reasons for trying it:

a) It's reputed to be able to decongest by drawing fluid out of nasal and sinus tissues. Since I felt that I was dealing with something solidified in my sinus, I thought that if I could draw fluid out of the tissues and into the sinus cavity, maybe I could soften whatever was in there. That seems to have worked bc I DID rinse out some pretty solid-looking chunks.

b) Also, I sometimes wonder if I have a very mild form of cystic fibrosis, because I can never wear anything metal on or against my skin: eventually my skins eats thru them. I can't tell you the number of watch backs I've eaten thru... very thick chrome-plated ones (ate a hole thru the chrome and caused the metal underneath to corrode and the chrome to blister, making a jagged edge that was unwearable; GOLD plated and ate thru that too.) I feel like the alien from the Alien series.

Anyway, one of the treatments for the lung complications of cystic fibrosis is breathing in aerosolized salt (NaCl) and I thought maybe my sinus tissues would appreaicate a little extra chloride.

Does any of that make medical sense?

I haven't read anything like that, but it makes intuitive sense - if salt works for CF lung infections, why not for sinuses? In your case, if you do have 2 variant CF genes, salt might be especially beneficial. The only caveat I have is that if you do have variant CF genes you should be monitored for infections since you never know what you're going to run into that would settle in a sinus. And possibly looked at for other conditions like poor secretion from things like the pancreas, for example.

BTW, the 'sweat test' for CF also detects people that are in between - people who don't have the very-non-functional (and fatal) CF gene, but they don't have 100% fully functional genes either.

I never even heard of the Hanta virus. I've been almost as terrified about mice coming back in the house as I am about ants though after I learned you can get Hepatitis from their droppings and urine. When I saw the insane amounts that had been in dark corners of every room under the hoard, I did my research before trying to clean any of it up. It was fresh back then... at least some of it was.

My fixes around the house seem to have done the trick, knock on wood...

I always keep one trap set in the kitchen with some irresistible peanut butter in it. It's been a long time since I've caught anything, heard any noises or seen any new evidence of any activity.

Besides those cabinets, I don't really have any place for them to hide anymore. Nearly all of my furniture was thrown out in the last dehoarding, leaving half of my rooms empty. Where I do have furniture, I don't put it right up against the wall anymore. So the stove and kitchen cabinets are really the only places to hide anymore.

But who knows how long that stove has been glued to the floor with tiles before I moved in about a decade ago?

I've got a mask and nitrile gloves. Before I even try budging any of that vinyl, I've got to get down there and deep clean stuff. I don't want any of it falling on the floor, and I don't want to be even disturbing any dust and kicking up god knows what by trying to rip any of it out without it all being wet first. My allergies were bad last night on areas that didn't even look like they were bad. I don't even want to know how sick I might get if I don't clean it first.

And I'm hoping the one long-dead mouse that I can see right now doesn't have any other old friends when I pull everything out.

I just told more to Kiki.

It's actually probably still a lot worse than you can imagine. I do have pictures I've taken of what's back there, if I ever feel the need to vomit a little in my throat after all of this is done.

It's all old though. I actually don't smell anything, despite how gross it looks. I'm just hoping that the flooring underneath can be salvaged enough to take mortar for the ceramic tile. The little bit of wood I've exposed right to the side of the stove is damaged, but not so much that it isn't still usable. But the vinyl I pulled up looked a lot better than what I've got to handle today, so I'm not getting my hopes too high.

It is. One was a map of the ocean floor that belonged to my dad. Heaven only knows why he had the thing. Another is a poster that my Blair bought at an Asian fair years ago. He had it up and I took a liking to it, so I kept it. I am going to put it up.

Yeah, this story was one of the first things I really attempted to write. I don't know if she still has a copy of it as I gave it to her years ago.

So, I'm thinking today after my walk and a couple of other things that I will pull that out and see what it looks like. Maybe start typing it out.

Everything is clean and out in the trash for pickup.

I even went ahead and prepped the entire floor for whatever the next stage will be when the time comes, which wasn't on the agenda today. Tons of scraping. I'll probably put a coat of primer on it for the time being.

I also noticed some screws drilled into the wall at an angle on the board to the side of the dish washer, and even if they did glue the countertop to the board it should be easy to separate.

I'm still not sure if I can't just pull the dishwasher out, but I seriously doubt I can. These people didn't seem to think at all about the future, and it wouldn't surprise me if it was a permanent solution for them.

At this point, I might just throw the dishwasher away if I'm going to be tearing it out. One less hassle, and one additional cabinet after I build another door and drawer.

I've also got a really pricey used garbage disposal unit that was ripped out of a kitchen from some rich folk's house. I've been sitting on that thing for a while now. I'll have to test that it still works, but I'll probably replace the ancient one with it before fixing the cabinet under the sink.

I used to have something like this (which disappeared years ago along with some other very handy tools). Mine was a simple curved heavy square tube with a flat piece on either end - one to go under whatever you wanted to lift, the other to step on.

It turns out my stove actually moves quite easily when it doesn't have tiles wrapped around the legs, gluing it to the ground. It's not even scuffing up the bare floor as far as I can tell.

I still don't think I want to be putting it directly on top of ceramic tile though if I go that route. And having tracks on the ground to move it would be really nice, I think.

Height is going to be a factor as well. Ceramic tiles are going to be quite a bit thicker than two layers of vinyl, but that will be offset by tiling the existing countertop, so that should be a wash.

It doesn't look as though the legs on the stove are put very high right now. Tracks might end up making the stove sit too high. I might end up having to use the same felt pads I've put on all of the furniture in my house and see how that goes. Maybe I'll put some on there tomorrow as a test and see how it goes since I will be moving that thing around quite a bit in the coming weeks.

I guess if I really wanted to, I could just throw out the entire existing countertop and just put up plywood for the tile base. It would be quite a bit thinner than the existing MDF counter top. That might also make putting in the really nice cast-iron/porcelain sink in there too... assuming the cabinets are even deep enough to house it.

(EDIT: Damn... it just occurs to me that doing this would make the problem worse if the stove is too high. Oh well.)

or frowney face.

Yeah. It was so gross.

I actually really liked the original sheet of vinyl after I bleached the hell out of everything before removing it. It was in great shape compared to those cheap checkered tiles they put over it, and it had a real retro feel to it.

There was a LOT of grease back in that corner too, and it wasn't from me. Anything I cook that makes grease has always been in a George Foreman grill, so that's been there for well over a decade now. Considering the condition of the kitchen floor when I moved in, that could have easily been 15 years old when I bought the place.

And no, the dead mouse didn't have any friends.

Super clean everywhere now except for under and behind the dish washer. Last place in the house that hasn't been scrubbed after the mouse apocalypse.

Talk about running kitchen staples and food supplies down to the nub!

Making beef stew today, with the last and skimpy cut of (on sale) chuck roast, with the last four carrots, the last two potatoes, the last of the celery, the last of the leftove spinach, almost the last box of broth, and seasonings and spices. At least I have enough flour for thickening. I see a big shopping in my future tomorrow!

Wish I could have invited all of you for dinner; the menu has been very tasty. Working my way backwards:

Swedish meatballs on shirataki noodles, creamed spinach, and sweet/sour pickled beets. (If this was truly Swedish lingonberries, cranberries being the next, but dd hates cranberries)

Seared pork chops glazed with apple cider/mustard/sugar/vinegar with roast potato, sweet potato, onion, b sprouts and zucchini.

Thai red coconut curry with stir-fried chicken breast with fish sauce, sugar, basil and cilantro

Beef and cheese burritos with my own green salsa

*****

Been spending the evenings with family watching shows on Amazon. The Expanse is a real nail-biter, and New Tricks is a lighthearted British detective show.

Wind and rain storm that blew through BC Tuesday night into this morning is now being classified as a cyclone. The reason for this is because wind storms usually just dump a heck of a lot of rain on the coast and blow things around. This storm blew right across the province basically and the prairies are dealing with what is left of it now.

Still spots in the Interior without power.

Beer bug panic must have died down in the news temporarily since even though we didn't get together for Chrismas I'm going to the old man's for dinner. Haven't seen my step-mom and my brother since last Christmas, and it will be nice to see him again before he goes back to school for the year.

I'm loving how the kitchen looks. It's crazy that with all the doors down, the cabinets stripped, the floor taken up and the subfloor cleaned up how much nicer the kitchen already looks than before I did any of that work. It was REALLY bad. Should be huge motivation to finish the rest of the house when I finally have a beautiful kitchen instead of what I used to have. I've had better kitchens in some dumpy apartments over the years.

Got all my hardware and the tools I ordered, so that's all ready when I get to that point. Although I should have bought two clamps for the jig. I thought I only needed one, but watching a DIY video the guy used two. I have other clamps in my garage, but none of them have rubber stoppers to protect the wood. I could do something about that, but it might just be more efficient to go to the store and pick up another one.

Not going to do much today except for clean up my living room and start moving more stuff out of there into my 2nd bedroom upstairs so I can work on both the kitchen and living room at the same time.

Then I have to make sure my tablet is charged up so I can throw an album together of the work I've done. My old man is here quite often when we go visit my brother, but my step-mom and brother haven't been here for years, and the house was so bad overall back then that I only really had people over for a BBQ outside.

So, we did this ginormous grocery shopping today, blew past my weekly budget by 25%, but I was out of so many things I'm not surprised.

Meat is getting expensive overall. I have a price point for most cuts of meat: $4/lb for closely trimmed meat. But I used to be able to get it quite a bit cheaper on sale: $2.67 for ground turkey, $3 for chuck roast, etc. Sales are hard to come by lately. My favorite cheese purchase - $6/lb on sale for a 2 lb bag of shredded cheese, is now at almost $8.

Well, at least I'm stocked up.

On occasion, when I realize that I've forgotten after work has been done it REALLY bothers me. I usually don't forget. If anything, I take way too many photos. It actually makes it hard to put albums together since what in the moment seemed like it was important loses its relevancy when trying to put a concise album together for other people to see that doesn't look like you're trying to make them sit through a slideshow of your family vacation.

I probably have no less than 75 pictures of the kitchen so far, and demo hasn't even wrapped up.

I got most of the stuff out of the living room and kitchen that won't be there for the next few months, including all of my hung pictures except for two of them. One is huge, and I don't know what to do with it. I haven't had mice for a long time, but I don't want things on the floor anywhere just in case one sneaks in again.

The other one is small, but it's only partially down. It's a metal plaque my brother got me that had 4 holes with smallish nails through them in the corner that need to be pulled out with pliers. After I got three of them out and it swung away, it revealed a fairly large hole in the wall I don't even remember being there. I got a good laugh and grabbed my camera to document that before taking the photo down. Only problem was that I couldn't find the pliers that were just in my hand and I ended up doing other stuff in the mean time.

I might give most of my hung pictures to goodwill except for the ones my brother did. My house will be my art, and I don't want to be putting holes back in the walls when it's done. With the privacy film up on all the windows below eye level from outside, I won't have any holes in the walls for any window dressings or in the windows for blinds either, so it will all be a blank slate when I stage the house on the market.

In any event, I should be starting the cabinet and wall tile sanding this weekend.

As much as I don't like wasting primer and paint with the extra cleanup steps by not doing everything at once, I think I might do this all in stages, with the top cabinets and the tiles going first. It really sucks living out of cardboard boxes for all of my kitchen stuff with zero cabinet space, and who knows what I'm going to find when I pull that dishwasher out and whether or not I'm even going to be keeping it. I think I'm going to get everything above the countertop prepped and primed, and then at least paint the top cabinets, shelves and doors so I can get the contact paper on the shelves and at least have access to them while I do the rest of the work.

No luck on acquiring any additional drawers to work with yet. I do have one I took off somebody back when I got that garbage disposal, but I haven't even checked yet it it would work with the existing stuff or not. It would probably be better to find a set of two to work with, that way if it looks slightly different, even when everything is painted, at least they'll have symmetry in their difference.

I dunno.... Just one more reason to hold off on the bottom cabinets for now.

The new hinges work awesome, and with that jig aren't a complete pain to make.

It took me a long time to set the first one up since I had to absolutely certain that it wouldn't cut so deep it went through the face of the door and that it was the right distance from the side of the door as not to bind at all, but once I got the first one made the second one only took a few minutes. It will be even quicker once I put a table to work on in my basement instead of doing it on my lap on the floor.

I just wanted to make sure one would work before the time ran out to send them back if they weren't what I needed. I put the new stuff up on one door with the old stuff up on the joining door over the stove and the difference in the looks and action department are staggering. Not a bad upgrade for less than $120.

One thing to keep in mind is that I will have to be damn near precise on the height I screw the hinges to the insides of the cabinets. Of course you can't actually raise the doors up and down with the adjusting screws, since they'd be pulling each other apart as you did them one at a time. You only get a little bit of angle play to work with, which won't cover up anything but the most superficially incorrect placements. The screws for pushing the door out from the cabinet are great though. The door initially did just a tiny scrape of the cabinet when you'd open it at first, but about 1/2 of a turn of the screws and it's smooth sailing.

Now that I have all of that set up on my jig, I'll probably prep all of the doors for hinges first, and then sand all the doors and shelving before I put up all the plastic upstairs and do the cabinets.

This would be a lot easier if you had someone to hold the door to the cabinet at the right height so maybe you could mark the screw holes with a punch or felt tip pen.

Ha! I know the feeling!

I was tempted to stay in bed a lot longer than I already had, but puppy wuppy was anxious for her walk/ potty break, so I had to drag my butt out whether I wanted to or not.

But it wound up being a productive day. Hubby and I still have to install the new modem and router from our cable company, but his allergies were so bad from crawling around on the floor yesterday getting the power cables untangled that he decided to put it off for one more day, so I set dear daughter up with the weed sprayer while I hacked down about a third of a bird of paradise that was taking over the front garden and binned up the Xmas tree. Then I ran out of bin space. Also cooked a pork roast half for dinner today and the other half frozen, cut up three chickens for freezing and cooked the carcasses to make broth and pick the meat off the bones for puppy wuppy.

So now I have pork and chicken broth, one for ham and bean soup and the other for chicken and dumplings.

The problem is, it's going to be a little... complex.

It's not a simple measurement from the top down or the bottom up since whoever installed these cabinets 60 years ago didn't make them even. I mentioned this issue before, and that I've figured out an easy way to solve it that will look good. I just need to use those outside corner trim pieces to make everything look level on the bottom.

But in doing so, I'm not actually leveling out the door openings themselves, so the widest variations between close cabinets that would be apparent are 1/4" or slightly less. The door overlap is 1/2" on every side if it were centered perfectly.

The jig makes the left and right sides centered perfectly, but those hinges can't be adjusted up and down much at all (possibly none, and it's just adjusting the angle the door sits at furthest from the hinges themselves).

The corner trim pieces will make the bottoms of the doors look closer to trim than the tops of the doors are to the moulding right under the soffit, but surprisingly not as much as I thought, and that shouldn't be an issue... especially since most people aren't tall enough to look head on at these doors.

So really, I just have to make sure that the doors not only cover the cabinets sufficiently, but that they all line up when they're close to each other. (I honestly never really noticed any of this in 10 years I've been here, but have I mentioned before that I'm a perfectionist? )

The one I installed to do a test today is not at the right height for that. Fortunately, the wood filler I have dries solid as a rock and can be threaded, so I don't think this will be a problem. I just won't go poking any more holes anywhere until I know everything is lined up right.

I think once I know for sure I have one of them at the right height that will make the rest of them work, I'll have to make marks on the front of the cabinet where the center needs to be. The problem is that I will need the doors closed to make sure they're lined up horizontally, and when they're closed I can't make any direct marks where the screws need to go since they screw to the inside of the cabinets.

This also means that I'll have to install every single hinge before I've painted anything. Not a huge deal since I can go light on any paint around the screw holes on the inside of the doors since a good sized area around them will be covered by the hinges, but this is quite a bit of double work I wasn't planning on since I'll then have to remove the hinges before painting anything and then put them back together one last time.

I made me a good table in the basement with some lumber I had picked up for another project recently. Got my shop vac, a few drills, my finish sander and rest of the tools I need staged and ready to go. My plan is to get all the doors prepped for hinges and then sand them before moving on to the next door. And once the doors are done I'll sand all the shelves and then the discs for the lazy susan.

I should be a long way away from having to worry about any water in the basement, but until I know that my gutters and foundation patches will keep it all out for sure, the idea of having any wood down there on the floor is not a good one. I only want a few doors down there at a time while I'm getting everything prepped for paint.

Oh... and I need to remember to pick up a box of washers. The hardware didn't come with any and it's been my experience that the knobs have a much better chance of staying on tightly with a washer in the back. You don't have to tighten them as much either, and if you tighten them too tight in an attempt to make them stay put without a washer you can start ripping the paint right off the front of the cabinets.

Wow! You sure got a lot accomplished today SIG. Good for you.

I got my laundry done and walk in while it was dry out. The raid did arrive around suppertime which was about 5pm, I guess.

Not doing anything heavy tomorrow but things to clean up next week, though no work.
