Happy Anniversary... whenever that is.

(I kinda know the feeling... I'm not exactly sure when my sobriety started either, but now that it's the 6th I can safely say that it's been over 2 years. )

It surprises me too, Jack.

Like to think my guardian angel is my dad. I saw his ghost when I was in the hospital.

No, the neurosurgeon said to me after 6months passed the surgery that most of the brain tumours he removes are cancerous.

No worries Jack. My memories from right around when I went into the hospital are spotty at most. I can remember pieces of the three weeks and I know how close it was to my mom's birthday when I got out of the hospital...but other than that.

That's amazing. I think you need to get your work published, Brenda. I can't imagine surviving what you went through is a fluke. I don't know what I believe in but I've seen things I can't explain myself and I know we've talked about this before. I don't have any of the answers, but I don't believe that things like this just happen randomly for no reason.

...

So I went to the doctor today. No clean bill of health, of course, until I get the labwork done and get the results, but a little look under the hood by the doctor gave much better results than I was anticipating. :)

No BP meds for me, at least not now. It was moderately high, but not enough to make my doctor even bring up the possibility of medication (even though they are aware of my family history of high blood pressure).

My lungs sounded great (in his words). That's considering I've been smoking for 22 years and I just finally got over a flu-turned-bronchitis that has held me down for the past 5 or so weeks. Heart sounds good. Pulse all the way down to my legs is a go.

I cringe to think what those results would have been had he checked me out 2 years ago in the height of my drinking before I got this physical job and lost all of that weight.

Going to be tested this week for diabetes/anemia/thyroid disorder among anything else that gets tested in a regular lab setting.

Fingers crossed.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Fingers crossed for you too, SIX!

Speaking of diabetes ... and cooking .... (I get around to posting about cooking or gardening sooner or later!) ... I made a fantabulous stir-fry yesterday, and the great thing was a lot of it was leftovers so I cleaned out the veggie drawer too.

My veggie mix:
A ginormous carrot, diced
About 1/2T grated ginger and 1/2T grated garlic
Sesame oil
3 celery stalks, sliced
About 2 c shredded cabbage leftover
1 med zucchini, sliced diagonal leftover
1/2 diced red pepper leftover
A handful snow peas, leftover
about 1 c frozen peas, leftover
Stir fry

For dear daughter, I mixed her veggies with cooked rice, soy sauce a tad of sugar
But for hubby (who has diabetes) and me (allergic to rice) I mixed our veggies with pre-prepared spaghetti-style shiratake noodles (no cal, no carbs), soy sauce and a tad of sugar. I knew the rice would work out, but I was surprised at how well the veggies and noodles worked out. Family was happy and asked for seconds, so I was happy too!

I am still trying to find a publisher for my book. I've had a number of people tell me that there has to be a reason I got so lucky. Sometimes I think I just haven't found it yet.

Those are great results for a just under the hood check.

When you get to the lab, the doctor will want your heart checked through your blood, thyroid, diabetes, cancer, vitamin levels and mineral levels.

So my fingers are definitely crossed for you Jack.

I wish I could help with advice on getting published. I don't know anybody who is even remotely in that business. I know of a few self-made youtubers who have published works and make a good living between both their youtube videos and those works, but I don't know them well enough where I could likely get them to take time out of their day to respond to me about advice on your situation.

I believe that you could fairly easily set up an Amazon store account and sell some of your works there in e-book format. While I wouldn't recommend that avenue for something you're particularly proud of and I'd hold back on that until you can get a legitimate publishing deal somewhere, you might consider some of your smaller works for that platform to get your stuff out there and maybe make a few bucks while getting some word of mouth advertising?

lol... Yeah. I'll be 40 this year. I've had a few brushes with death in my life, not including trying to passively kill myself with booze and drugs for years. At times in my life I thought that I was meant to do something since I was still here. Maybe that's still true, but I don't put that kind of pressure on myself anymore though. We've got enough pressure in life already right? Putting external pressure on yourself, particularly of a supernatural nature probably isn't necessary. I wasn't trying to do that to you... just making supportive talk is all. :)

Talking my test results with my mom, she got on the topic of smoking and how nobody noticed that she had quit, even my step-dad, until about a month and a half after she finally did. I never knew that, but I laughed and said "well... that's how you have to do it. When you want to quit a bad habit, just STFU about it and do it." When I quit drinking this time, and it stuck, I didn't even mention to anybody that I had until I was already sober for around 4-6 months. My only other time trying to quit in the previous 5 years I was telling people ALL THE TIME that I had and it only lasted about 3 to 4 months before I went back to it. I think my thought processes were that if I had put the pressure of everybody else expecting me to be sober that would help. It didn't. I remember my old man saying one time "That's great. Maybe one day you'll be sober long enough where you don't need to talk about it anymore". That's when I realized that all I did was talk about it, and that I was thinking about it all the time. It wasn't long after that comment that I went back to drinking.

I'm still trying to figure out how and where I can get the lab done without being reamed. It's not easy.

Going to get my teeth cleaned today. That will be nice. :)

Do Right, Be Right. :)

40 is a big milestone but really anything after that is gravy.

I had thought about Amazon but they also charge for publishing things. So, I've kinda counted them out. So, I am still looking for a proper publisher or even an agent in Canada.

No worries Jack. That's why it is called "smalltalk". Just shooting the breeze as the old timers say. I work at trying not to put too much pressure on myself or regret too much that I think or feel that I've missed out on life.

Walked out of my doctor's office this year with my clean bill of health and said, "I've got another 50years left on this planet and I am just trying to enjoy them."

That's maybe why I don't talk about my writing too much as it will put too much pressure on me and it is hard enough trying to find stuff as it is.

I hope you can get that lab work done as it will give you a better clue as to what is going on in your body and if anything needs to be taken care of.

Teeth cleaning is good and they will feel nice when you are done.

I'd never say I have 50 years left. Don't know if I'd want them if somebody gave them to me.

I'm not ready to go just yet though. If I had kept drinking I would have been gone already. Now I'm just hoping that the long term damage outside of my mouth is minimal and if I live right I can live reasonably comfortably at least long enough to see my niece grow up and do whatever amazing things she's going to do.

I didn't actually get my teeth cleaned the other day. I built up a great rapport with the hygienist in the short time there and she has set up a 2nd appointment gratis for me tomorrow. A full 1 hour block to clean them up as good as possible, free of charge. I couldn't thank her enough. At one point I said, "so I guess they didn't believe me when I told them they might need a little extra time on this one" and she laughed and said that everybody says that.

My new dentist is in full agreement with me that it's time for my top teeth to go, however he agrees 100% with my step-bro-in-law that going forward we need to do whatever possible to maintain as many bottom teeth as long as possible to support a partial. He says it's inevitable that the top ones are going to go sooner than later and that by holding on to them I'm leaving myself open to constantly fighting infections and the other health problems that could bring. But he also said that many of the bottom ones are still solid enough that we could maintain them for many years down the road as long as I keep doing what I'm doing at home AND I don't skip out on regular cleanup visits. This is exactly what I was thinking, but my bro doesn't want to do that. Hopefully I can change his mind. The new dentist says that he does dentures and that if I choose to do this and can't get it done we can talk about the costs down the line.

Overall, I'm extremely happy with my new doctor and dentist and their staff. They've been wonderful.

Looks like I got the answers I need for my bloodwork as well. The plan is to get that done tomorrow too.

The time for the truth is imminent. :0

For some reason I've always had a feeling that I will outlive my friends and my brother probably.

I'm glad you're happy with all the medical in your life and getting answers and things done. That's great.

I can put off my medical aka my family doc and next mammogram for a few more months.

Only doc, I see regularly is my chiropractor and I have been going to him for years. He's a great guy.

I've done it in here just around Christmastime. Annoying to say the least.

Yeah, I start running through the way I was walking, what was I doing when it happened. Not that it matters much. Just have to pay better attention tomorrow is all. And put some heat on my knees tonight when I go to bed.

Good to hear it wasn't serious. :)

I'm always "in a hurry" for no reason, really. I have plenty of downtime, and especially during the winter it's not as if I'm making extreme use of it or anything. But whenever I am actually doing anything of consequence I'm usually always trying to multi-task while I'm almost always thinking about something else at the same time.

Perfect storm for tripping over something that was always there before.

Nope. Little shook up and bruised and sore as well but that's about all.

Well, I got off the bus and I know the sidewalk in that area isn't the greatest and it was starting to rain and I was trying to open my umbrella. Thought I had stopped walking and the next thing I knew I was down.

True enough.

Good for you Jack.

That's why I hate cellphones. I've been almost walked into by people looking at their phones when they should be looking where they are walking.

I have a cellphone and use it as a landline as this place doesn't have a landline. I will not carry it with me or use it when I am out as I hate them.

People think I am weird because of that but I find them rude and even people my age and older are addicted to the things.

So, no I will never have the thing with me.

Yeah... that's the really creepy thing about it. When people older than you think that you're the weird one. I expect it from the kids.

I know I've talked about this before... how I like going out for coffee with my bro and my dad when we go down to visit him. My brother has a smart phone, but only because the government gave it to him (the one on SSDI). My dad has a flip phone. I don't even have one. We actually talk to each other while everybody at the other tables of all ages sit next to each other sipping coffee in their own little smartphone worlds.

A listener to my program sent me a video that appears to show a deceptively edited video of President Trump’s speech from the Oval Office. We performed a side-by-side comparison of the video from our listener, apparently taken by a smart phone recording of Q13, to the raw video of Trump’s speech from CNN.

That comparison reveals the Q13 video creating a loop of the President licking his lips — making it seem bizarre and unbalanced — it also seems that someone distorted the President’s face and my have added an orange tone to his skin. What do you think? Was this edited to clown the President?

In a statement, Q13 noted that the video editor responsible has been placed on leave pending an internal investigation.

“We are investigating this to determine what happened,” said Q13’s news director. “This does not meet our editorial standards and we regret if it is seen as portraying the President in a negative light. The editor responsible for editing the footage is being placed on leave while we investigate further.”

I thought I was just going in for a basic cleaning today. I wasn't prepared for what actually happened though. I basically just got a full 1 hour version of a root scaling and planing done for free. No time for anesthesia/Novocain. She said we got a lot of work done in that time because I took it so well and didn't move at all.

Granted there was no way she was able to do what took 3 hours to do in two sessions around 4 years ago, but that was after around 15 years of not seeing a dentist that time and it also didn't cost me $1,500 out of pocket either.

Anything that was missed should be taken care of in 6 months when I go back, but she said that even though in a full session she'd be taking time at the end to make sure she got it all that when she flossed it felt as if it's all out.

My new dentist office is awesome! :)

Got my blood work done today too. Super fast and super friendly staff.

I feel like I won the lotto here with my choice of professionals.

I'll wait until the lab results come back to start celebrating though.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I know but they do. And they can't get why I hate it when their phones go off in the middle of mah jong and instead of ignoring it, they answer it. That is just rude to me.

I know what you mean. When I have coffee with someone I actually talk to them too but there are plenty with their faces glued to those little screens or they have the dang thing on the table within easy reach. Ugh!

I remember many years back before my Grandma passed that when we'd go out for lunch once or twice a year she would thank me for not talking on my phone at all when I was with her. I was the oldest of her grandchildren, and my youngest cousin is about 15 years younger than me, so it's no surprise that she said that I was one of the only ones that wouldn't pull their phone out at some point during the lunch.

She knew I liked drinking, but she was never aware how bad that problem had gotten. Going out to lunch with her was actually a very rare event that I left my house for a few years there other than going to work. I knew that pretty much everybody I worked with was on the damn things half the time on break, but other than that I wasn't out in the real world much.

Fast forward a few years later, and I almost feel like somebody from one of those stories who was sleeping or in a coma for years and wakes up into a strange new world they aren't really a part of anymore. They're everywhere. In the hands of children and senior citizens alike. People who never had interest in computers their entire life know more about them than I do. It's terrifying. I want no part of it.

Pod people.

The strange thing is, I can actually empathize with them because of my own struggles with addiction and the cognitive impairment and complete disconnect from reality that my copious consumption of alcohol caused.

This video is very interesting to me. It's a bit scary, but at the same time it's hopeful. Some people are getting rid of them and going back to regular phones. Maybe if the facts about smartphone addiction becomes more prominent then more people will do so.

....

Here's the actual study done by the Journal for the Association of Consumer Research regarding how the mere fact that people have their phones on their person when not even engaging with them lowers their cognative functions.

It's what I thought about when you said "When I have coffee with someone I actually talk to them too but there are plenty with their faces glued to those little screens or they have the dang thing on the table within easy reach."

No kidding.

I think they're trying to sell at the top of the market. Somebody should tell that that prices are already going down in your area. My experience selling into a falling market (We had a compelling reason to move) is that you need to drop your initial listing and sell FAST, otherwise your house will linger on the market and you'll drop your prices anyway. So maybe the falling prices will discourage them from selling. One can only hope ....

When I go to the doctor's office I look around to see who is doing what. One elderly lady was knitting. Another elderly couple was talking. But everyone else had their face in a phone. Sheesh.

I usually take my diary-planner with me, some scrap paper and a pen: I either work on designing furniture (for hubby to build) or my landscape (for me to implement) or I think of "all the things I need to do" and write it all down so I don't forget it. (I keep a running list ... there are a million things to chase after - big AND little - to keep a household running efficiently. Even more, now that I'm decluttering/ organizing and we're slowly doing renovations. Hubby wanted a six-month vacation after his retirement and I can say that with a few exceptions - such as gutter-cleaning- I've been handling everything myself. With all my aches and pains it's a slow process, but I DO try to keep up!)

Clean bill of health. :)

Out of about 100 different measurements taken in 3 tests, the only thing I had outside of the limits was my glucose level being a few points high. I was told it was nothing to be concerned about, but they wanted to mention that. Let them know what my diet was and my Dr. recommended that if I switched the honey nut cheerios for regular cheerios and keep doing whatever it is I'm doing that everything is going to come up perfect a year from now.

I'll be damned. Looks like my mouth problems are all I got out of all that prolonged bad behavior.

As long as I don't go back to drinking and I maintain my diet, everything should be great.

Now more than ever I'm convinced that my job is worth so much more than just the moderate pay that I get. Stress free, plenty of time off, and a ton of exercise while I'm there.

I love my job even more now. :)

I know Sig. She came in from work yesterday while I was in the kitchen and spoke to her husband. That was where I heard that she had gotten a couple of "generous offers" as she put it for the house. Then she went into the room where he was and I didn't hear what else they discussed.

There's a couple of galling things about this. 1. I am busting my hump trying to find proper housing and they won't lift a finger to help me.

2. I am sure it's because it's so much work to look after a house. They can't just pack up anytime and go on one of their extended camping trips without thinking about the mail and the garden and the lawn, ect, ect.

Jack, I know those phones are addictive. Heck, computers are addictive.

I have no problems with either because I don't lean towards having a personality that gets easily addicted to things.

Back to what you said about driving Jack. It is no different on the buses. People wait at the bus stop messing with their phones, bus arrives and other people have to tell them to get on. Then when they get on they ignore the driver that is trying to get them to pay their fare because they are so busy with these stupid things. Buses have schedules.

Got a message on FB today. My friends are heading back home to Edmonton. They spent the last day here in Stanley park but without their kids. Yeah... To a certain extent computers and probably especially games have always been addictive.

There's an unsettling trend now that is making them far more addictive then before. In fact, it's as if they're being designed to be more addictive.

First, we could take a look at games themselves. Back when I was a kid and really up until about 10-12 years ago, beating games would just be some stupid "bragging rights" amongst friends. Now that they're tied in online with databases though, that mentality has taken on a new life of it's own. Not only isn't it enough to "beat" the games, but with the trophy systems designed into all console games many people feel the need to get the "platinum" trophies that you can only get when you have every trophy the game offers. Most games have insane requirements for the top tier trophies that keep you playing dozens or even hundreds of hours beyond when you would normally have moved on to something else, often times doing extremely mundane tasks that amount to doing nothing but keeping you from the RW. Your brain doesn't view it like that though. You're making progress, and to your brain it feels like you're getting work done. I can only imagine how the desire to keep people playing a game as long and as often as possible will grow once there is full ad revenue built into games.

As far as social media, it's all about the "likes". Online social media sites provide a fake alternative to real life interactions and work by rewarding people with likes. These have been scientifically proven to trigger a dopamine release, which can be truly addictive and negatively impact somebody's life if it comes to easily and frequently.

It's not too dissimilar to a the mind's reaction of dumping dopamine into the brain when somebody does cocaine. Though it's not nearly as strong in a single "hit", and cocaine tends to dump everything out at once (which is why coming down feels so shitty), it manages to give just enough to make you come back for more. It's not that these people are being inconsiderate. They're literally hooked on a drug.

Dopamine is meant to be a reward system for good behavior. The "high on life" feeling that you get after a good workout, or after a long and productive day's work, or as a response to sexual stimuli (our genetics form of pushing procreation even back in the days before we could verbally communicate).

Everything about online interactions is fake, and potentially dangerous for the future of society.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I have known about the games thing for years. And I admit fully that I can play solitaire and mah jong on the computer for hours. I am still lucky enough that I can put everything down.

My brain must be wired weird then. Because I can even put down social media for a few days. *L*

Humanity is wired that way which is why planet earth has a human population problem now. Back in the long ago that was a good thing.

There will be people who break the addiction of these things and of course there will be those who can't. Same with ANY addiction whether it be drugs, alcohol or smoking.

I think my addiction is this website. I spend far too much time here. Since I don't go on social media, I think tis is probably the closest thing to it, so I can certainly understand the attraction. On social media, the feedback is almost instantaneous - it hooks right into our innate drive to be part of a group, and it's so convenient! You don't have to walk over to your neighbor's home and deal face-to-face and put up with the minor annoyances involved in real life (their neurotic chihuahua or how their house smells funny or their crazy beliefs) or pay attention to your tone of voice. There are no undos or redos if you fuck up.

Convenience: it will be the death of us all.

Dear daughter can spend HOURS playing computer games. (I burned out on those a few years ago.)

Yep, it's real easy to get stuck to a screen.

The rain report: The storm that looked more and more like a "blow-by" ... as the predicted amount of rain dropped from 0.6" to 0.3" the closer and closer it got ... dumped about 1" at our house.

Better, I see an even bigger storm by satellite picture heading in our direction, and its predicted to drop about 3" of rain over four days (mon thru thurs). And if the weather pattern holds true, another storm about four-five days after that (in the middle of the Pacific)... too far out to be in the ten-day prediction, but looking to be heading straight for the west coast, so SOMEbody is going to get rain and snow!

BRENDA, I know that you're sick of gloom and rain, and how difficult snow and ice make your life. I hope that these storms swing south and pass you by, giving you some much-desired sunshine and clear skies.

Your doctor is quite right. Now, that you know about your blood sugar you can control it with diet since it isn't worrisome yet.

That is fantastic Jack.

:)

I'm amazed, and consider myself truly lucky here. Once it warms up and isn't frigid in my basement, my plan this year is to start making use of the workout equipment I have that has just sat around doing nothing for years on my days off. In the mean time I want to start spending at least a few minutes everyday stretching and making use of some lighter dumbells I have upstairs.

Since it looks as though my diet is good and miraculously my body isn't trying to kill itself with all the bad things I'd done to it in the past, that just leaves old age and bad habits to blame for the problems that remain. The goal here now is to go through next winter as close to pain free as possible. That was getting really nice to live that way again during the warmer months and I found myself starting to take that for granted again until the pain came back.

Hey, where's your dentist? I want to go there too!

Best of luck on the results. I know you may be worried about the results, but try not to borrow trouble from the future, OK?

Missed this one earlier, Sigs.

Thanks for the well wishes. Everything seems to have come up Jack this week. :)

I wish you could go see my dentist office. They're great. Anybody have any cheap suggestions for showing my appreciation? Gift baskets can be pretty pricey. I don't know how much autonomy my hygienist had in the decision, but part of me thinks the decision to do what she did was all hers. My dentist only briefly mentioned it in passing late in the session during the 5 to 10 minutes or so I saw him, long after she had already told me this was the plan.

I'd definitely like to show her that it was appreciated, even if I can't afford a huge gift basket for the whole office.

You were lucky.

Getting your body ready to get into some real exercise is a good idea.

Old age is a ways off for you yet and as long as you don't fall backwards. I would say you are looking pretty good.

If you want an idea for a gift for the dentist office. What about a nice plant? Not something that flowers but maybe a small cactus.

A cactus is my type of plant. I definitely wouldn't give somebody something they'd have to do more work to enjoy than I'd be willing to put into it.

Weather is taking a nosedive around me. Weather.com was right again. :(

Big snow this weekend and 0 degrees overnight expected on Sunday. Then it "warms up" to the mid 20's for a handful of days and I'm seeing a day late in the two week forecast that is expected to be -4 degrees overnight (not including the wind chill).

Glad I prepped my snowblower this fall. I'm gonna need it. :)

A cactus sounds perfect! I think any measure of appreciation should be well-received.

About the weather ... apparently a part of the polar vortex broke off and headed south.

MEANWHILE, the failure of el Niño to bring rain (el Niño, a no-show so far, losing steam
Capital Press 10 hours ago) is due to the failure of the ocean temperatures to make the atmospheric currents synchronize to them. At least so the honchos say. I'm just repeating it.

Fun times.

Then a cactus would be perfect for a dentist office. They don't take a lot of looking after and a small one would fit perfectly.

Better get ready then Jack and stay bundled up.

Been dry the last couple of days around me. Just some fog Monday afternoon. Pretty clear this Tuesday evening as well.
Fingers crossed it will stay dry the rest of this week.

My eyes got quite itchy last night and had to use my eye drops for the first time this January. A lady that I play mah jong with said that there are daffodils out and such. I haven't noticed any flowers trying to sprout but that doesn't mean much. So in my area we could be in for an early Spring.

In a way I am hoping for that as then it will warm up here.

Yeah... I'm going to keep reasonably warm this year.

I have no plans on turning down the heat in my house. This will give me an opportunity to see what my worst possible bill could be now that I've kept it steady at 68 degrees (on the small area of the 2nd floor that only includes the bathroom and the top of the stairs). It's maintained a steady 65 degrees on the 1st floor where I do most of my living. I can tell the basement has gotten much colder in the last week though. I only do laundry and roll my cigarettes down there.

Man oh man... The pains are back. :(

I'm going to have to get that CO2 detector for my furnace and see if that's to blame. Otherwise with a clean bill of health, I might just be looking at my new normal during winter unless I move south with my folks. Still not as bad as last year, but it hasn't gotten really cold yet, and I still have 5 more nights of work before I'm off again.

Going to bed early today. Hopefully 10 hours of sleep is enough to start fresh tomorrow.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I THINK it's still OK. The problem with the El Nino (that didn't come) was that the entire equatorial Pacific is warm. not just our eastern end. But as long as the ocean is lofting water into the air and we get substantial cold air masses coming south, they'll wring rain out for us and the normal west-east wind will drive it towards us. That's my layperson's understanding, anyway. We just need a few more cold air masses heading south.

So far, we're almost at average up and down the state. If I add up the totals at my house I think I'm at 9-10" (I'll go add them up) plus 1.3" in the immediate forecast.

I'm sorry Brenda. :(

I can't believe that there's nothing you can do to get out of that situation given your circumstances. Everybody said that my brother would never be able to get SSDI. Even the woman who worked closely and oversaw his physical therapy between the ages of 6 and 10 told me that there was nothing that she could do and as long as he could stand in front of an conveyor belt 8 hours a day he'd never get it. She said that something should have been done decades ago and it was too late now given his progress. I had tracked her down and she was the head of some medical department at one of the colleges in Chicago.

It took my Dad almost 3 years to make it happen.

I wish you had somebody like my Dad on your side.
