Laundry day for me then a walk.

Also I am officially back to mah jong on the first Thursday in August. Ran into the lady who runs the group and she confirmed it.

Yeah... I just can't get into that Hot Mess House show. I watched two full episodes and really wanted to like it.

I don't think the lady running it is a strong enough presence to be the singular show runner. When you look at Hoarders, any given episode has two sets of people they're bouncing back and forth between (just like Hot Mess), but you're going to see the Psychologist/Psychiatrist and the Junk Expert/Organizational Expert in charge of each of them, giving you four strong personalities along with the hoarder situation. Save for maybe one or two of the regulars on Hoarders, I'd say all of the rest of them are a lot more interesting than the woman doing Hot Mess.

Maybe I'm being a little unfair to her though. The stupid Zoom Call meeting format just sucks.

Hopefully now that things are opening back up she is able to actually meet with these people in person and maybe bring another expert along with her, or have a co-star that does the other house they're working on.

I fixed a janky electrical outlet in my living room that has been a thorn in my side for a decade today. It took about two hours, but it's in there solid now.

The cover never fit right on the wall and the outlet would push into the wall when you plugged something in and try to come out of the wall when you pulled the plug out. That's because idiot Bob put a floating junction box in there that wasn't attached to anything except for the conduit.

Don't ever let Uncle Bob around electric.

Seriously.

He didn't even wrap a single outlet or switch in the entire room with tape. They're all wrapped now.

The rest of them seem to be installed well enough and shouldn't cause any problems. I will be replacing all of them with newer and classier ones eventually, but I don't want to do that until after the room is painted. I'm going to love that, because I bought all of that stuff months ago and it will be one more box of stuff that I can get rid of.

I'm going to keep the mirror up on that wall. I really like it. I think I'm going to sand the frame down and paint it white to match all of the trim though.

Got bored of working though and called it a day early. No TSP wash yet, and only about half of the stuff got the 2nd coat of mud.

I'll get to it when I get to it.

Still no TSP wash, but I did go back and put the 2nd coat of mud everywhere it still needed it.

I threw away 7 bad cans of paint from around 9 or so years ago after checking to see if they were any good (they weren't). That's what happens when you keep them out in the garage to freeze during the winter for years. Oopsie.

At least I know what colors they were. One of them didn't have the name, but I should at least be able to get the color match. Only 3 of them I cared about. The rest were just ceiling paint, primer and old enamel paint... all of which I already had new gallons of.

So all of my shelves in the basement are completely organized now, I've got a proper inventory of all of my materials for the work, and I've got a full shelf just waiting for my new tools.

Still no TSP wash...

I started working in the living room and got a few cracks on the ceiling sanded and a little of the patch on the wall sanded, but then I realized how long my grass had gotten in only 4 days and decided I had to mow. Good thing, since I filled 1 1/2 trash bins with it. Geez.

I then dumped 4 gallons of weed spray where it needed it. This is my 3rd weed application this year and they were borderline out of control this morning. Must be a bad year for weeds.

Then I took my sawzall and edged the front walkway.

I think I'm just going to take it easy the rest of the day. I'm beat.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Being in fire-prone SoCal, I thought this was both interesting and relevant in terms of fire-created weather. SoCal has had its own pyrocumulus clouds.

Quote:

Oregon wildfire forms 'fire clouds' that pose danger below
(edited for length and focus)

Pyrocumulus clouds — literally translated as “fire clouds” — look like giant, dirty-colored thunderheads that sit atop a massive column of smoke coming up from a wildfire. Often the top of the smoke column flattens out to take the shape of an anvil. These clouds, however, hold more than just water. Ash and particles from the fire also get swept into them, giving them a dark gray, ominous look. For four days in a row, the Bootleg Fire has generated multiple fire clouds that rise nearly 6 miles (10 kilometers) into the atmosphere and are “easily visible from 100 to 120 air miles away” (160 to 193 kilometers), authorities said Friday. ... one of them on the southern flank of the fire partially collapsed Thursday, causing dangerous winds and embers to fall on crews.

When a pyrocumulus cloud forms over a fire, meteorologists begin to watch carefully for its big brother, the pyrocumulonimbus cloud. NASA has called the latter the “fire-breathing dragon of clouds” because they are so hot and big that they create their own weather. In a worst-case scenario, fire crews on the ground could see one of the monster clouds spawn a “fire tornado,” generate its own dry lightning and hail — but no rain — and create dangerous hot winds below. They can also send particulate matter from the smoke column up to 10 miles (16 kilometers) above Earth’s surface.

(A) wildfire in British Columbia last month that leveled an entire town also generated a pyrocumulonimbus cloud. Blazes in California in 2020 and in the years before have created multiple pyrocumulus clouds, with the Creek Fire in the Fresno area generating a mighty pyrocumulonimbus cloud last fall. Australia’s bush fire siege in January 2020 also produced pyrocumulonimbus clouds that threatened to produce a fire tornado.

Since I wasn't going to do the livingroom, I wanted to at least say something inside got finished this weekend...

The other outlet that has bothered me since I moved here was in the bathroom. The gaping hole for the junction box was too big for the cover and you'd see into the wall on the top and bottom.

While I was mudding in the living room, I decided to hit that as well.

Just sanded it down, primed it, had a fan on it to dry and got it all put back together. Looks great.

So simple, yet it took me 10 years to get around to doing it.

I think the best thing about finally finishing those cabinets is that every other job left to do seems so small by comparison.

All I did today was watch some videos on YouTube. Wrestling videos to be exact. This is my guilty pleasure and I don't do it very often. But I felt like watching some Jon Moxley aka Dean Ambrose. That was fun.

My old man ruined Pro Wrestling for me when I was a kid, said it wasn't real and said that stupid people watch it.

I know that's not true, because I've known quite a few smart people in my life who were huge Wrestling fans, but the damage was done and I could never get into it. You know how stuff your parents say when you're really little can shape your life, for better or for worse. He probably wouldn't ever even remember telling me that if I asked him now.

I'm glad you can dig it Brenda.

Damn... that outlet looks good.

Such a stupid little thing that has been bothering me for 10 years and all it took was about 15 minutes of work between drying times.

I can't wait to finish prepping that living room so I can paint the entire 1st floor. It's going to look like a totally different house soon.

My parents were big fans when I and my brother were small, so I've watched it on and off for years. My brother may still watch it, don't know though.

My brother used to work for a local promotion up here and got to know a few of the better known names in the business. He still keeps in touch with the guys he used to work with.

Oh, I know a bit about how the business works even in the smaller promotions but it doesn't bother me. I can still suspend belief enough to have fun with it. It's good fun on a lazy afternoon every so often.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

I literally spent all day cooking, which was NOT what I intended to do. It started with hubby deciding he wanted a couple of sandwiches for B'fast and then deciding he wanted another one. Since I was making sandwiches I turned dear daughter's leftover burger into a sandwich for her. Mnaged to use on of the avocados in the harvest bucket, the other 2 went in th frig.

Back to the harvest bucket, with the cukes now on top. These particular kind are long, shriveled, and spiny. Fortunately they taste MUCH better than they look. But the spines are a PITA so I knocked them off b4 putting them in the frig.

Then the 30+ tomatoes that I cleaned, trimmed, quartered and set on the stove for sauce.

Then the (sigh) 2 ginormous zucchini, along with the 3 ginormous zucchini on the countertop. I turned those into one big baking tray of zucchini lasagne for dinner plus two loafpans of the same for the freezer. Between the peeling, slicing, seeding, softening, coating and sauteing, the zucchini prep took HOURS. I sent dd out to snip a 4-c container of basil and rinse, pick off the leaves and chop them in the blender bc that goes into the zucchini lasagne too.

The 5 store-sized zucchini went in the frig

Anyone want any?

Then dear daughter went out and picked 30 more tomatoes.

Last year, my (1) tomato plant, a San Diego Red (the only one left at the nursery) managed to squeeze out a few tomatoes a week: enough for a few sandwiches or salads, but not enough. So this year I got two Early Girl tomatoes and now I'm flooded. I think I'm going to share with my neighbors. If Early Girl is available next year, I'm only planting one! and NO MORE GINORMOUS ZUCCHINI! It gets picked at the right size, or it's going into the trash!

Managed to get three greewaste bins out with dear daughter's help, altho some of that was from the week before, from weed whacking, raking/sweeping, and weeding. Have not managed to make progress on any front, but am keeping the mess to a tolerable level.

Back still gets stiff and sore if I twist (to the right) so I have to be careful and rest my back every now and again, but at least I'm back to doing things ... albeit slowly ... and no longer on ibuprofen.

Think I'm over the hump with the kitchen work, except the giant cleanup facing me when I get up (again) in the AM, so then I can make progress on some of the other things I need do, like wash the bathroom walls down with bleach/TSP (again) bc the bathroom has poor ventilation and a mildew problem. Gonna contact a contractor because we need to replace the shower and window so we can get vent put in too.

Yeah. I've never known anybody over 10 years old who believed that it was real. It's all about the spectacle and athleticism and completely dependent on the knowing suspension of disbelief. It's like the circus, but cooler.

My old man just didn't get that. He didn't tell my brothers and I we couldn't watch it, but he shamed us out of watching it at an early age.

Like I said, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't even remember he did that if I brought it up to him now. It might have just been a few off-handed remarks he made one day, but kids who are still of the age that they look up to their parents as actual know-it-alls are pretty impressionable. It's not like he walked around all day talking about how much Wrestling sucks or anything. I don't even remember him ever speaking about it again after that.

That's cool you got into it with your family. I knew a few families who made a huge deal about it. My step-dad's Mexican family even had everybody over for taco dinner on Wrestlemania every year. Aunt Rosie made the best tacos.

--------------------------------------------------

And he who is not sufficiently courageous to defend his soul — don’t let him be proud of his ‘progressive’ views, and don’t let him boast that he is an academician or a people’s artist, a distinguished figure or a general. Let him say to himself: I am a part of the herd and a coward. It’s all the same to me as long as I’m fed and kept warm.

Exactly. It's just fun for me.

When I was a kid and my dad was still alive it was a Saturday afternoon thing. My parents would watch with my brother and it was my choice if I did or not. Sometimes I would and sometimes I wouldn't.

My mom watched it up to her death and I would watch it sometimes with her.

Like I said it was and is just fun for me. I know what is going on and how it works but still fun.

A couple of friends of mine, my brother and I once went to a big card in Vancouver. This was years ago. My friend and I practically screamed ourselves hoarse. *L* She was rooting for one guy on a tag team then when the other one got in the ring, I would scream for him. Her boyfriend at the time thought we were nuts. But that was a fun evening.

It's been hot hot hot here and expected to stay that way for the next few days. So I dialed my plans WAY back when it comes to what I'll be doing. At least I more or less finished watering all my trees a few days ago. I could have done more, but at least I did something for them.

But as limited as my plans are, I still want to accomplish something. So, off I go.

Well, I slogged thru the giant dishwashing and pot/pan/casserole scrubbing this AM. It took 2 hours to finally finish the dishes and wipe down the countertops and range.

Ran off to Ralph's bc I forgot to put cabbage on the list, plus a few other family requests for fruit etc.

ANd finally started scrubbing the bathroom walls with bleach/TSP. I was really worried that it wouldn't clean, but it doesn't need more than a sponge. Didn't finish it today but will get a chance to finish tomorrow.

Hot here, too.... but not as hot as YOUR place, KIKI! Low 90s for the next few days, so we're doing "indoor" work. Hubby is working in the garage (in THIS weather!)

There's always something to do, so whether indoors or not, we'll be busy.

On to making dinner: bbq and satay pork (already roasted, just needs sauce and heating/broiling) and cole slaw (fried rice for dear daughter since she can't eat cabbage). Seems like I spend half my time in the kitchen.

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox on my phone bc it keeps crashing. Had to copy some URLs back in bc I don't want this synced to anything. So what did it do first thing?

Crash.

It seems to be a GUI problem bc expanding the screen too far is one reliable way to crash it.

Oh, well...

Emptied out the receipt/ coupon/ packing slip drawer where we throw things until they get sorted, and in the process of sorting the contents plus mail.

After that, back to bathroom wall scrubbing.

But I didn't sleep well last night, so first, a short nap...

Basically that was the whole film but it started off with him killing an older couple and setting their house on fire. He followed the female character to a gas station and stole her phone then went and killed her lawyer at a coffee shop. Almost killed a hair dressing client of hers then decided on her son.

Despite the weather, I'm making some progress indoors, even though it's hot in here too!

I'm nearly halfway through giving my bathroom a ceiling-to-floor cleaning, in preparation for installing a bathtub bench. By the end of the day, I'll be a bit more than halfway through, after I scrub out the bathtub. The previous owners may have used pumice stone on it or some other inappropriate cleaning, because the surface is roughish, not smooth, which makes keeping it clean tedious.

But all that is in preparation to installing the bathtub bench, which sits crosswise over the top edges, and I'll put it at the back. I never use it as a bathtub anyway, and the bench will make the tub handier.

The other thing I've been slowly pecking away at is rearranging a corner of my living room, and I'm about 3/4 through. That involved removing everything, cleaning the 'keep' and 'donate' stuff, and finding news homes for the 2 things I'm keeping. Next up is really cleaning the floor (how often does one get behind furniture?), cleaning the stuff I'm going to put there, and installing it all.

Also, I got a bin for e-waste, of which I have plenty, for example, my previous router, and have been filling it as I run across things.

But I admit, it's been really, really, really slow. All this is a few weeks - maybe 2 1/2 - in the making.

I'll know to NOT watch it myself!

I myself watched 2 older movies, because I was curious. One was Runaway Bride. I THINK it was popular at the time ... .OMG. It was bad. I THINK they were trying to recapture the Roberts/ Gere chemistry of Pretty Woman, which I also thought was bad, but I'd say Runaway Bride was worse. Implausible plot, untenable unlikable characters, terrible writing, and acting too poor to carry any of it off. (tomatometer 46%, audience score 53%)

I also watched The Wolverine from 2013, which in terms of scripting, plot, acting, special effects and so forth which I found was FAR better than Runaway Bride. (tomatometer 71%, audience score 69%). And of course there's Hugh Jackman, whose acting abilities were sadly wasted because he only had a few modes to project. But after about halfway through of one heartfelt conversation after one guilt-ridden dream after one extravagant fight scene after another, I got bored. The only thing I really wanted to know was does The Wolverine get his healing powers back? So I skipped through the rest to find the answer

:: SPOILER ALERT yes he does ::

and to the end to find out what happened to whom.

Well, hey, that sounds like good progress!

I wish I could do a thorough job of anything, but as I speed my way thru each task/ project, if hubby criticizes the results I remind him that I don't have time to be perfect.
Unlike him, I can't spend a week on (the equivalent of) flattening a plane, and then take three weeks off!

The house is still cleanish, not due for another dusting/ sweeping/ vacuuming until the end of the month , the bathroom walls/ceiling got their yearly scrubbing with bleach/TSP (mildew issues) and paperwork has been sorted. So back to researching investments, which I had to set aside in favor of yardwork.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

My ADHD makes my work style somewhat chaotic. I work on something until I get too hot (I take cooling breaks in the bedroom, but if I'm really tired the cooling break will become the end of the day), too frustrated, too diverted by other things I see that need doing first, too demotivated (though often I'll push myself to do more), or too uncertain as to how to proceed.

But if I see something that needs doing, and I know how to proceed, and I start on it, I just can't let the details go. I want it DONE. Finally, completely, DONE.

That said, for whatever reason, I'm disinclined to start doing physical things and I'm extremely physically slow. Everything physical for me is just very slow.

Oh, another thing I'm working on. My mattress is probably 25 years old, and being memory foam it sleeps pretty warm, even in a somewhat AC'd room. So I got a thin 3/4" Japanese tatami mat and put it on top of the foam, and it does circulate air underneath me extremely well. And my back really seems to appreciate the much firmer surface. So I'm looking into replacing the mattress. The thin tatami was only a stopgap and it's not made to last. I think I'm going to try a thick - 3" - tatami mat to put on top of the box springs, and maybe a Shikibuton, which is like a thinner lighter futon, on top of that for some surface cushioning. Both of those are extraordinarily breathable. I know there are a lot of mattresses that say they sleep cool, but I don't think they're made for an AC that only gets down to maybe 73-74F on really hot days.

Also, if the smoke is blowing your way, does that mean you've got an offshore wind? Here they're called Santa Ana's. There's probably a name in your area for those. But that means high pressure inland from you, and that means really hot, dry conditions there. And that means more and worse fires.

Could you keep me posted? We get basically no Canadian news down here.

Yup that is best kiki.

Never seen "Runaway Bride" or "Pretty Woman" not my type of films.

I have seen "The Wolverine" as I am a fan of Hugh Jackman and a fan of Logan aka Wolverine. I wasn't impressed with the movie as I do believe it rewrote some stuff from the comics and that ticked me off. I don't like it when they rewrite the comics.

I've still got a couple more movies on hold at my local library and I think they are both Kevin Costner films or at least 1 is. I think they should be better.

No, I don't stay indoors but I will have a mask with me incase it gets too bad.

When smoke starts coming my way that means the winds are coming down from the North through the Interior where the smoke is and bringing down to where I am.

Right now Kiki as of last night there are over 290 fires burning in my province. We have fire fighters here from eastern Canada and some coming up from Mexico along with firefighters here in BC. Mayors of towns like Osoyoos and towns in wine country are asking tourists not to come or those already there to leave as areas are being evacuated because of the fires. They areas need the hotels for evacuees and firefighters.

The smoke is blowing east right now into Alberta. Calgary has had air advisories and I think Edmonton as well. Mind smoke from fires in Alberta is blowing into Saskatchewan and then into Manitoba and parts of Ontario. Then the smoke in Ontario is now reaching New Brunswick.

Was what broke the logjam getting your house into better shape? Not that you invite everyone over, but that people COULD stop by if the topic came up ... ?

That helped. For sure that helped. Getting rid of the hoard was only the first step. This house used to look so bad inside and out that even if I cleaned everything it still looked like crap except for 2 rooms.

A few months ago, my house was to the point that given a few hours notice I could get it cleaned up well enough that it wouldn't be embarassing. A few years ago that would have taken at least a few days.

Now, with the remodeling done in the kitchen and the better bathroom habits I've needed to develop unless I want a constant sink full of hair with my huge beard and shoulder length hair, it really only takes about 20 minutes to get the place put together... and that's only if women are coming by. If any of my friends or my old man come around without their ladies with them I'm completely fine with it as is.

But it's also just going out more to help people with stuff they need help with. I'm building up a cache of good karma and I need a few favors down the road for myself too.

At this point in my life I've got a pretty good idea of who I can and can't trust with paying it forward. I'm not worried that it won't be returned.

Let him say to himself: I am a part of the herd and a coward. It’s all the same to me as long as I’m fed and kept warm.
