You are doing great Jack and it is good that your manager notices it.

Don't beat yourself up. The A is right next to the S. I think it was just a typo.

Got some good sleep yesterday, so last night was another cake walk. I was able to order my tires today before I went home and they were even a few bucks cheaper than i was quoted over the phone. Under $260. :)

They're going to call me in to schedule an appointment. Probably as early as Tuesday. Going to make sure the glass place is ready for me that day too since they're right down the street. $400 bucks plus the $40 I put into parts for the fix I did makes me a happy guy. I thought it was going to cost me $1,200-$1,500 to get this car in decent shape again. All I need is new breaks and a burner phone and I'll be ready for anything on the road again. :)

I don't know if I'd say I'm doing great, but at least the trajectory is up for the first time in years. I'll make it someday. One small goal at a time. :)

It was a typo, just annoyed that I didn't catch it before I posted it. Happens.

Good sleep helps on all things. Don't rock the boat when things go smooth.

I would love for things to go smooth around me. My idiot cousin never showed up on Friday. Today I have to get laundry done and if she shows up while I am out oh well that is too bad. Can't stop and wait on her to move her butt. 'sides that is a tough enough chore around here as it is. With all the junk on the walkway I have to use to get out and about.

Talk to you later. Got to get a move on that.

Good luck with your chores. :)

Hope the tornado's didn't effect you at all.

Checked my BP twice tonight, because I just couldn't believe the results of the first one after my first break.

111/71 !!!!!!!!

When I checked it again at the end of the shift it was 123/84 !!!!

I never thought I'd have to worry about finding out how low you can go before you have to start worrying.

Isn't that a bit unusual???? I would have thought too far north for tornadoes!

Got it done without too much damage to myself.

I am safe. We get the odd funnel cloud out over Vancouver harbour and sometimes they come on land. Drop some water and then disappear.

Alright on the great BP readings Jack.

Mine at my doc's the other week or so ago now was 130/50 perfectly normal but as a rule mine sits at around 90/30 or something like that.

My cousin showed up yesterday afternoon. We went over the local McDonald's I saw her pictures of Scotland and the Orkneys. Beautiful country.

She moaned about the repeating of names on some of the family gravestones around Aberdeen. I told her we do the same thing over here. She concluded it was ridiculous but hey it's a family tradition.

Learned my Scottish great grandfather's name from here though. Pretty boring. Charles.

Tested the BP 3 times again today. All three were under 120/80. :)

For my 6th day, I was really rockin' it this week. Had a whole bunch of extra stuff pulled down so I could get my extra hour in while everybody punched an hour before me. Even my team lead left 30 minutes before me. He was worried that he'd have to come back and help me out to get me out the door when he left, but when he told the day shift manager who I've barely ever spoke to that I was working till 6, she said "oh yeah. Jack usually works late" and it wasn't a problem. I thought that was pretty cool since I didn't even know she knew what my name was and we've only said hi in passing before.

As for the diet, I think I've got my rice covered for the foreseeable future now. For some strange reason, there are no good deals on brown rice where I work. I had to order a 42lb, 6 gallon bucket of the stuff for 67 bucks online. Left unopened, it's supposedly good for 20 years, but once you open it they say it's good for a year in the right storage conditions. Should be good on rice for at least a year now, and it will be a lot better for me and tastier now that it's brown instead of the boring white filler.

Ton's and tons and tons of energy these days. I seriously cannot recommend a gluten free diet enough. :)

But man, I'm sore right now. I think I'm going to go sleep for about 16 hours today. It's nice though... it's all the right kind of endorphin creating pain, with none of the bad pains.

Looks like storms are coming, so I'm not going to be able to mow the lawn for a day or two now anyhow.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

So earlier today out of curiosity I went to the CalFire website and totaled up the acres burned in California to date (just looking at fires over 2,000 acres). It was over 550,000 acres. That's a lot of acres.

When I left work, there was a new purple-brown cloud in the sky, this time coming from the east. As of 8 hours ago it was a 4,000 acre fire in OC and raging out of control. And during the day the Mendocino fire grew from 273,664 acres this AM to 283,000 acres by the evening.

My current rough estimate is now 564,000 acres burned, up from earlier in the day.

There are 16 major wildfires in California today.

My grandma was basically kicked out of the family and written out of the will when she married my grandpa. All the family riches evaded her side of the family after that. They didn't much appreciate the rich Irish girl marrying the poor Polock, and even as decades went by she was never forgiven for it. I never once heard her bitch about it either.

I'm not really sure what was worse for them, the difference in class or the ethnicity.

It's kind of strange just being a "White" European mutt, knowing that previous generations of my own family didn't care much for each other based off of where they came from.

My cousin wasn't bitchin' about it. Just stating a fact after I saw some of her pictures from Scotland. She told me that if I ever got to Scotland don't bother with the family. Just do my own thing.

Which is also why when they dragged their sorry arses over here a number of years ago that she said, "They were boring old white folks."

In your family's case Jack. I would say it was the class thing. Old Europe was very class conscious and marrying out of your class was deeply frowned upon.

So... I've got what I think is a pretty amusing story at my own expense today.

I had it all planned out, or so I thought...

Today was the day that I got my tires and new windshield installed. :)

Tires went without a hitch. Although, I find it funny that nobody mentioned to me that I was missing a bolt on one of my tires. I didn't mention it to them either, so no harm no foul I guess.

But then... the windshield.

Had quite a few people in front of me, so I did a lot of wandering around. Bought some new break pads at an auto store that was close by, got some coffee, just wandered around. When I got back my car was already being worked on. So far so good.

Guy calls me up to the register and I thought it was done. Says he's got some bad news.... Uh Oh.

I told him the wrong year of the car, so they had the wrong windshield. Even worse, the broken one was already out. What a dipshit I am. I gave them the year of my brother's car that was on my driveway for 3 years instead of mine. I got them mixed up!!!! (To add insult to injury, I'm probably going to have to exchange these break pads most likely as well).

So I was about to walk 14 miles home when one of the guys that ran the place asked where I lived and offered to give me a ride home if I could wait an hour since he lived close by. Awesome! We got to talking about this and that in the car and halfway during the ride home he even offers to pick me back up tomorrow on his way back in. Even better, he starts late so my car will be ready when we get there. He didn't even want any gas money.

What a great thing to do for somebody. It's nice to experience something like this every once in a while and know that there still are a lot of good people out there.

Unfortunately, my dumb ass didn't grab my house keys when I left, so I had to get in through a window, and my doors only unlock with a key inside as well, so I'll be leaving through the window on my way out tomorrow. I've got spares somewhere, but I must have hid them really well 6 years ago.

It's a shame too, since I regularly pick up various tools and sets at a clearance bargain at work and most of them are unopened. I thought it would be nice to give him one of them since he won't take any money, but I wouldn't be able to get back into my garage until I get my car and come home.

I'm probably going to swing by there one of these days after work and drop it off and let them know it's from the guy he gave the ride to. Generosity like that shouldn't go unrecriprocated.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I found the spare to the garage! I went through the misc stuff I had bought and it turns out I have two trickle style battery chargers I had picked up that are unopened. Good for cars and even better for boats. He mentioned he was going fishing and camping with his wife and kids next week. Not sure if he has a boat, but maybe he could get some use out of it or knows somebody who could. :)

I can't imagine this is a new thing. 300 or 400 years ago there must have been unrestrained fires in CA, and Pilgrims were sure to have seen the smoke. Just wouldn't have known it was from 3,000 miles away.

A drought on an ancient civilization could indeed make them go extinct.

I was being a bit sarcastic JSF's way there. Without saying it, he's throwing a bit of climate change denial in our non-politicized thread we got here. It's an issue I don't care to debate much since none of us have any true facts.

There were wild fires before, but none of them for the most part got out of control like what we see in California these days. Climate change being a factor or not at all, it is still a man made problem.

Decades ago, tax dollars went toward "beautification" projects where we were paying people to "clean up" the forests of all leaves and other debris. Unfortunately, we're the only animals that do such a thing, and the trees knew what they were doing, evolutionarily speaking. We screwed up the entire habitat when we did that, and now when there is a fire all of that "debris" that held in a ton of moisture is gone and there's literally nothing to stop the fires from spreading.

Fires almost never got out of control like what we see today because the land used to be so wet that they'd just die out on their own.

I actually wonder if this could have also contributed to the constant drought conditions in California as well. One would assume that when it used to rain in California that these natural lands would hold in a lot of the moisture for long periods of time that now would evaporate overnight.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Yeah, I know. I was also trying to throw back that we were here first and saw fires caused by lighting and such.

I seem to remember those projects too and getting rid of underbrush and such.

You might be on to something there Jack. But in the US today that is too progressive for everyone.

Had a teriyaki chicken rice bowl for lunch. I like things like that but the sauce has so much sugar in it. It gets too me after a while.

Haha... Oh yes. I see you're little sarc bomb now. I missed it until you pointed it out. :)

Just wanted you to know that I had dropped one too. Sometimes that doesn't get read like you think it will.

You're probably right about it being too "progressive". Either that or somebody somewhere will have a problem with it. Hell, for all I know our government moves so slow on things that California might still be doing it to this day even though we know now that we shouldn't be doing it because "think of all the jobs that will be lost" if we put those good people cleaning up the forests out of work by eliminating their jobs.

It's a shame that something like that has the potential to be politicised like everything else seems to be these days. There's irrefutable proof that these projects are the main contributing factor to the forest fires raging out of control these days.

I'd never actually heard anybody link it to the droughts before though. Honestly, I just thought of that while I was posting the last reply and edited it to add that last paragraph about it.

I could actually see how that would be ignored, even if somebody knows for a fact it was true. It screws up the climate change narrative for sure. Right now Democrats in California can scream about climate change every time a fire rages out of control or there is a drought. They couldn't do that so easily if it were recognized that those projects had a lot to do with both.

I'm not arguing against the idea of climate change, mind, but I'm just playing devil's advocate here.

Got my car back today. Glass looks great, and if it still manages to leak the guy told me to bring it back in and they'll seal it free of charge. They had to do some extra work since it was kind of rusted out so they filed it down and primed it. No extra charge. They're going to be getting a great review :)

The guy didn't want to take the battery charger when I first offered it and said that "this is part of the business, it's what I do". I explained how I get first pick of clearance items before the store opens and I buy a whole bunch of this stuff that's unopened and I happened to have two of these, and since he said he was going on a fishing trip with the fam I thought he might have a boat. He asked me exactly what it was and I told him it was a trickle charger for car and boat batteries. He's like "yeah, I could use that... you mind?". lol

Turns out he does quite a lot and hustles for money. He's not looking for any labor currently, but he's going to need a guy or two during the winter for snow plowing. I told him I've got a lot of nights off of work and I could give him my schedule and he could call me on any night I'm not working that it's storming. Not sure what he pays since it's going to be his vehicles and plows, but could be some nice side cash to pay those heat bills. He got all of my info and said he'll be in touch.

This guy kind of reminds me of a few good bosses I had in my youth. I'm thinking that the plow work is a test and that this might lead to other stuff down the road if I show myself to be reliable.

Going to put the new break pads on next week sometime and finally get that burner phone. For the first time in at least 3 years it actually felt like driving a real car.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

People have studied the history of fire in the Western US for the last 3000 years by looking at charcoal accumulation in sediments. The current thinking is that there is a 'fire deficit' due to recent (150 years) human activity including fire suppression/ exclusion, compared to what would be expected from the climate having shifted to hotter, drier conditions.

The intensive and extensive fires we're experiencing aren't either historic or normal. They're a 'catch up' to the new drought-regime.

Don't worry about missing my bomb. It was pretty subtle. We are even as I didn't quite catch yours.

It could have a drought affect as trees and grasses maintain soil and water. Removing trees and brushes created the dustbowl affect that caused so many people to leave Oklahoma during the Great Depression.

Yup, the Democrats would have to bite their tongues if it is proven.

Politics do suck. Even up here. I was listening to a couple of old people tearing Justin Trudeau apart. I just shook my head. Though the lady did say that his dad did some great things for Canada. She's not too thrilled with the fact we have two official languages. That was his dad's doing.

I'm glad he took your payment and I hope he does send some extra work your way this winter.

Sounds like you are moving up in the world for sure.

I just thought I'd re-post this since there's a long history of observation that fire suppression has allowed the build-up of tremendous amounts of what's euphemistically called 'fuel', but is in fact feet-thick layers of dead fallen branches, trees, leaves and needles; as well as abnormally dense forests.

Clearing out the deadwood, thinning the trees AND removing the fine litter together have been shown to reduce fire devastation.

Well that report is from 1972. I'm pretty sure they were still telling us that smoking cigarettes was good for your health back then.

It's the complete opposite of everything I've heard on the issue, but what do I know.

If I am remembering rightly in 1972 in BC anyways, doctors and such were just starting towards saying smoking was bad.
