I've got a raspberry. It's great for retro gaming, but it's not much as far as a real computer goes. My computer was built 5 years ago, but it's got a quad core AMD processor with 16GB of DDR3 memory. It was a great rig when I built it and is still way more than I need today since I don't do any PC gaming. It's way better than a $60 raspberry, in any case. Really, the only upgrade I'd think about doing to it at the moment now that it's in working order again is to replace my main drive with a SSD that would make it run even quicker.

Not sure about the slice. I've never heard of that one before.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I had heard Raspberry was cheaper, about $25. Slice is either a model of, or accompaniment to Raspberry.

The Raspberry I have (Zero) is only $5, but good luck getting one for that price. My brother actually managed to snag five of them for around $6 after shipping, and to the credit of the seller they honored that price without bitching but immediately changed it after the purchase. It's touted as "The Five Dollar Computer", but you can't buy it directly from the manufacturer. Resellers jack the price up and usually charge up to $20 more for shipping.

It's only a single core processor with 512mb of memory. It's got some pretty cool uses, but it's no substitute for a real computer.

I did a little research mid-post here and it seems that the price of the newest model has come down quite a bit and the manufacturer has put a lot more of them in a lot more hands. It looks like you can even buy it online through Target these days, which is making it a lot cheaper considering places like that offer free shipping. The last time I even looked into a Pi 3 was probably over a year ago and I couldn't even find one for under $55 with shipping.

Even still, you actually need to buy quite a few "extras" to do anything with it. Prices for all of that have come down as well now and you can get pretty good starter packs with a 32GB card included for under $40.

Good to see they're finally making enough of them that the pirates and scalpers will have a harder time ripping people off.

M3.4 earthquake about 2 miles from my house ~19:37.
Oddly, the earth is still gently rocking a bit - just enough to feel like mild vertigo.

updated M4.4 initial quake 34.140°N 117.773°W 6.1 km depth
a 3.4aftershock 2 minutes later 34.133°N 117.770°W 4.3 km depth
and a 2.4 aftershock 2 minutes after that 34.135°N 117.772°W 4.9 km depth

the rocking lasted roughly 15 minutes

I know gluten is a tough one Kiki. Carbs are also hard on someone has low blood sugar like me. Carbs turn into sugar as soon as your body starts digesting them. I eat a certain amount of carbs a day. I don't count but just watch what I am eating.

Sodium is another one that is rough on people. I watch that too.

I'm suppose to eat 4 of 5 small meals a day. I don't totally do that. But I have breakfast, take my meds, eat a snack when I get to a local mall, do my errands, eat lunch and if I am playing mah jong that afternoon make sure that I have a granola bar on me to eat while I am playing, get something to have for supper. Then I am usually good until around 9:30pm to take my second round of seizure meds and a couple of hours after that a snack for over night.

I'm not a fancy cook but I think I produce good meals for myself and my guy and my mom both liked my cooking. I do a riff on a Paella but instead of seafood and sausage, though I have made it with sausage, I use chicken and broccoli along with the rice. Chicken stock, salt, pepper, garlic and bay leaf. Very tasty.

Can't really make fruit pies anymore but the cupcakes I make have no eggs in them or milk. With dark chocolate. Yummy! Have to make another batch for my birthday in a month.

I have survived for several decades making batches of my favorite dishes to take to work, usually making enough to last a couple weeks at a rate of one every 1-3 days. My spaghetti and my goulash (like beef tomato sauce macaroni) have not only Fed me, but they continue to be my favorite dishes, even in smaller batches.

For sodium, are you referring to salt, or something else?

Rumor has it the title of this thread references rain.
Today we had some weather, converting extremely muggy to submerged cars in the parking lot, recording 5.5 inches in a few hours. In my house, my A/C pulled 4 1/2 gallons of DHMO from the house air in 16 hours. I'm only using a 5 gallon bucket to collect.

The sky is the limit, really. It all depends on what you want to do with it. It doesn't have any sort of hard drive, and it operates on an SD card. I think for most applications you'd need at least a 16GB one, which is pretty dirt cheap these days. I'm not sure where it maxes out, but I'm currently using a 32GB one on my Pi Zero. It could probably take up to 512, but I would never spend that much money. For your buck, you'd be best off using a 32GB card as the main source for your OS and programs, then get a 4TB external for a hundred bucks if you needed extra storage.

The Pi 3B+ comes with wi-fi and bluetooth, which is nice, since the Pi Zero doesn't and you have to have dongles for them separately. You might also want to buy a USB hub for additional ports. The PI Zero only had one, so it was absolutely necessary, but the Pi 3B+ comes with 4 of them, so you may or may not need it.

You're going to need a case. You can buy cheap plastic ones direct from china for about 6 bucks, or you could spend a hundred dollars on a super nice one if you're made of money.

I use it for retro-gaming, so you need a controller. It will work fine with a standard PS3-4 or XBox 360/One controller, or you could buy pretty much any type that uses a USB input and/or bluetooth.

Keyboard/Mouse is pretty mandatory for whatever you're going to do with it.

HDMI cable if you don't have an extra one is a must, unless you're going to use a tiny screen that could run off of one of the USB ports.

Here's the specs of the Pi 3B+:

Quote:

Raspberry Pi 3B+ specifications

SoC: Broadcom BCM2837B0 quad-core A53 (ARMv8) 64-bit @ 1.4GHz
GPU: Broadcom Videocore-IV
RAM: 1GB LPDDR2 SDRAM
Networking: Gigabit Ethernet (via USB channel), 2.4GHz and 5GHz 802.11b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi
Bluetooth: Bluetooth 4.2, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)
Storage: Micro-SD
GPIO: 40-pin GPIO header, populated
Ports: HDMI, 3.5mm analogue audio-video jack, 4x USB 2.0, Ethernet, Camera Serial Interface (CSI), Display Serial Interface (DSI)
Dimensions: 82mm x 56mm x 19.5mm, 50g

I'm not sure how much of an improvement that is over the regular Pi 3B. You should keep that in mind though if you're looking to make a purchase. Target only has the Pi 3B for sale right now for $35 and free shipping. I'm not sure where you'd get a 3B+ for the best deal with shipping at this point.

EDIT: I'm seeing on Target that the 3B is only a 1.2Ghz processor compared to the 3B+ 1.4Ghz processor. It's also got 1GB ram, but I'm not sure if it's the same type/speed.

If you are thinking of buying one, I can't recommend them enough. It's pretty amazing what you can do with these bad boys, and I've only got the "shoddy" $5 model that pales in comparison to the specs the 3B+ boasts.

1st day back at work, and I don't think it could have gone better.

Finished my obligatory cup of coffee and was on my way to punch in when I saw my team lead walking in and he said he was so happy to see me that he could hug me. Nice way to start off the week. :)

I guess the last week was a CF with the guy who was managing us manning the remodel crew and the new manager slowly taking over the role. There were a couple of days before the new guy started that a different day shift manager was manning the ship while the team lead and I weren't there and I guess he just phoned it in and nothing really got done because the lemmings didn't have a leader.

I guess my team lead had been singing my praises to the new guy the last two days, and I got to show him that he wasn't full of shit. ;)

Talked to the guy who is now manning the remodel crew about "fixing" my schedule again, and he told me I now had to talk to the new guy and my team lead about it. New guy said with the way that I work, whatever they got to do to keep me around they're going to do.

Not only are we going to "fix" my schedule again tonight, but he's not afraid to hard code it into the system so we don't have to do this song and dance every other week anymore. He said if somebody has a problem with me getting a set schedule he'll just tell them that if they stop letting me do twice as much work as they do then he'll talk to them about getting their own set schedule.

He also said he is going to look into getting me on 7 nights straight since I want it. I was told before that it would take clearance from somebody higher than the store manager to make that possible. Fingers crossed this guy gets that done.

I think I'm going to like the new guy.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

1. I have hypoglycemia which is Low Blood Sugar

2. I hate cinnamon

3. I was talking about salt.

That rice dish I was telling Kiki about can last me 4 or 5 meals depending on how much I eat. I also cook chicken legs, wings or thighs and they last 3 to 4 days and then I just add rice, veg or eggless pasta to go with them.

I get hamburger or ground pork, add tomato paste, garlic powder, salt and pepper and that can also last about 3 or 4 days.

I think that's subjective. If you ask most people who work there, I don't think they're going to tell you the same story. I'm in the unique position where the amount of money I make isn't as important to me as the other benefits I get from the job and isn't nearly as important to me as being able to make my own schedule.

Given the amount of quality output I provide, at only around $4 over minimum wage I'm a steal. I also know this, I'm not afraid to let them know that I know they know it, and I've learned over the years how to do this without putting people off. It's not bragging if it's true.

It's taken a bit of time to get to this point. I've been working there a little over 9 months now. I didn't come right out of the gates making demands. I've slowly been positioning myself for this, and now it seems to finally be paying off in spades, if not actual payroll.

I would say that for almost anybody else, this company is no different than your assessment of most companies. I just happen to have a lot of leverage here, not only because of the quality of my work for the pay, but because my position of not being a wage slave allows me some liberties.

Quote:

At some point, do you see yourself becoming team leader? Does this latest development put you in the class of "full time" with benefits? Just wondering!

Anything is possible. They'd have to offer me quite a bit more for me to work full time though. There are full time opportunities for people at my level, but they dont' increase your pay rate at all. I'm not interested in that. I wouldn't even consider working full time unless it was for at least $17/hr. I'd still only take that if I confident that it would translate into even more money and an actual management position within about a year, maybe two tops.

At what they pay me, I'd only work half of my days, and only when they're a week straight. Working overnights you automatically lose 1 day to the switchover every time your off work. Working as many days as possible in a row and having a long break ensures the least time lost to "jet lag".

Do Right, Be Right. :)

RWED is fine.

My apartment is the problem. Squished another spider on a wall a couple of nights ago. Missed another one that was a cupboard last night. Went through an entire list of housing I got from BC Housing for Vancouver that I don't fit into because: A] I don't have enough money for them, B} I have no kids or spouse, C} I am not an addict looking for housing D} I am not ethnic enough E} I'm not Canadian Indian. Oh yes, I forgot one other thing. F} My age as in I am not over 60 yet.

I'm okay Sig. Just a mild bout of depression. Happens in and around anniversaries. My Blair will be gone 7years next Saturday and then my birthday is at the end of the month.

And as I told Jack. Looking for housing is hard when you don't fit into anyone's premade box.

Later Sig.

It's a shame that disabilities don't seem to count for much in Canada. My dad was tenacious about getting my brother taken care of, but now that it's done he's in a really nice place. Granted, he never would have gotten into housing anywhere near Chicago and he had to go 200 miles south to get into a nice place. It ain't the Hotel Ritz, but it's got everything he needs and it's affordable on his SSID benefits.

I wish you were able to move to a place away from the big cities, or you knew somebody like my Dad. My mom said for years that there was nothing they could do to get my brother taken care of. It wasn't easy, and it took a couple of years, but my Dad finally did it.

I hope things improve for you soon Brenda. I wish I could offer you more than moral support. :)/:(

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

For myself, I always used to think the best things happened in summer, and the worst things happened in winter. But then I realized winter is when my mood is very low because of the short days. And because of that, my resilience to hard events is down.

Still, it took years for me to get over the death of a parent, because we were estranged for so long, and I know it grieved that parent deeply even as I received a lot of unearned hostility. I regretted I didn't make more of an effort to reach out and reconcile earlier, that I let so much mutual misunderstanding and hard feelings continue.

What I learned is that the most corrosive grief is the grief that comes with guilt and regret, no matter what the season.

But all in all, things have gotten better, even though I can feel my mood slipping a bit with the daylight. People we love pass away. Seasons change. Nobody wants it that way. It's just the way life runs.

I hope the anniversary gets easier over time Brenda.

Hi BRENDA. It seems to me that your mood takes a big dip every winter. Has it ever occurred to you that you might have seasonal affective disorder (where moods fall with falling light levels)?

You might want to do an inet search on the topic; there are a lot of therapies available. Also, if you're clinically depressed, your doctor should be stepping in to help. For me, roughly 20 years ago, I went in for an infected ingrown toenail and saw a random same-day clinic doctor who was very insightful. As I was pressing her for treatment (You say you can't do anything now because it's infected, but if it's NOT infected you say there's nothing to do!) she asked me ... Why did you wait so long? and when I tried to pass that off with a I was too busy she persisted with asking me about what was going on, and the more I told her ... our daughter's deteriorating neurological status, lack of any known treatment, hubby's recent cancer, MIL's recent death from cancer ... the tears started running down my face and then she asked, rather gently Do you think you might be depressed?. And by god, I was. She she rx'd me an SSRI which kind of got me over the hump and helped me press forward with what I needed to do. Also, I picked her as my GP.

I tell you that so you'll know that if you have a good doctor and if you tell him (or her) what's going on with you, he (or she) should be prepared to HELP. It might be something as simple as rxing a bright light for "photo-therapy" to trick your body into thinking it's still summer. And if your doctor is NOT willing to help, you should find another one.

I know it's difficult to go doctor-shopping with limited mobility, but I think somebody needs to step in and help to get you out of a slump. After that, things will look a lot better/ clearer. Also, I will message you.

They do a bit Sig.

I was taking an anti-depressant after my mother died but when I had to go back on seizure medication that had to stop. Those meds don't work well together.

I also put myself through counselling for about 3years, after I got back from Alberta after my Blair died. I couldn't think straight for all the junk that was clogging up my pathways.

I often get slightly depressed as I said around anniversaries and other things like that. So I try to keep busy. Right now it is the stress of dealing with this place and so I am going back into counselling to keep my head on straight which will help improve my mood.

There is no room in here to put a therapy light. Not enough outlets and I will not string anymore extension cords around here as I will trip over them and get hurt.

My GP has been my GP for 30years and she knows that if I felt I needed anymore help I would talk to her or she should.

Also I have to deal with this whole calcifications in my breasts and getting mammogramed for that every 6 to 9months. I go for my next one of that a week before my birthday.

Best week ever.

"My area" was basically destroyed before I came back this time. I mentioned before how before I even punched in on my first day the team lead said he was so happy to see me that he could hug me.

Well... I didn't make it "perfect" before I left on my 6th day. There was just too much to do, and despite the remodel, the area I work is always the hardest hit and it didn't seem to slow down any. I think if I had 2 more days I could have had the entire thing stocked to the top before I left.

Was able to have a lot of conversations with different managers that I normally wouldn't be able to. The whip has been cracked. No more free ride for some while others are working their asses off. It's time for the management to do their jobs. This wasn't an issue when Number 2 was running the show, but now that he's out of the picture, some think that's the cue to get by with doing nothing all night, and that's why my area was destroyed before I came back.

One of the guys got sent home early tonight. The other one had to work his ass off side to side with the team lead last night. They're all going to be separated from now on as well.

New manager has made reference to how "territorial" I am, and now whatever days I'm working this is considered "my area", and I'm only going to have to work with others when I let them know that I could use some assistance. This isn't me being asocial. I can get along with somebody who's hustling just fine. I don't want to waste half the night chatting about bullshit though or be forced to work along somebody half my age that does half the work that I do without any authority to tell them to pick up the pace or clock out.

And the new schedule is out. Actually, the current 2 weeks were changed. To new manager's word it's perfect. It's exactly right, and it's set in stone. Now I don't have to hide how many days I have off from others either like I did with Number 2. I get to call my schedule and get so many days off in a row because I'm a freakin' beast.

Blood pressure is low, 6 pack is coming back, I've got more energy these days than I ever remember having and most of my pains are all but forgotten. I've even been gaining a bit of weight the last few weeks, so I think I'm starting to put on muscle mass again for probably the first time in 15 years. The pains I feel when I leave work these days are all the right ones, and none of the bad ones.

Told Number 2 to take a picture of what it looks like. Even though I've mentioned to several managers that my area shouldn't look like it did 6 days ago when I come back, part of me really hopes that it does so I can kick ass and chew bubble gum again.

I almost don't know what to do with myself now that the week is over. Going to see about my teeth later this week. That leaves me with most of the week to try to fix the weed wacker and take care of my lawn. Kind of strange having this time off with no critical big projects to worry about...

I don't think I'm going to think about it right now. Soon I'll engorge myself on about 4,000 calories and go to sleep for 12 hours.

Happy Labor Day, everybody. :)

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Heh... Didn't get that 12 hours of sleep I was hoping for. Been dealing with 90+% humidity all day and it felt like it was 100 degrees in my house. At least that will be a problem that goes away in a few weeks. If I don't get central air hooked up next year, I'm at least buying a window unit so I can get the humidity out every night and have a room that's comfortable to sleep in when it gets nasty like this.

I just bought a cheap corded weed wacker that had some pretty good reviews so I can clear out the weeds and not rely on my ability to fix the gas powered one that I've been saying I was going to get to all summer. The weeds have officially gotten out of control, and I felt that it was worth buying a cheap weed wacker just to take care of them and eliminate what is becoming a big point of stress in my life when I look at it. Now I can fix the gas powered one at my leisure because I want to and not because I NEED to.

Even if this thing only lasts a season or two, it's so affordable that I don't mind the expense. I know the piece of mind I'm going to have when I finally clear all of those weeds out and get my patio back. Maybe next year when I save up a bit more I'll just go and buy one of those really pricey ones that should last me a decade or two and be done with it.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

This wasn't $5 cheap, but since a new fuel line kit costs around 8-10 bucks it's only about 4 times that. I had some points on one of my cards though, so it was basically free.

My back patio is a bit rough on weed wackers. It's just rectangular stones that look like the sides of cinder blocks that were put down on sand. After the ants pulled up all of the sand last summer the weeds have come out like crazy. I expect to shred through the factory spool in about 20 minutes tops. I'm also going to have to be careful not to work it too hard. These cheaper corded weed wackers have a crappy fuse that's soldered on to protect the motor instead of a shut off switch, so they're known to "die" and be a real hassle to fix. I'm assuming that's what happened with the shitty corded one my friend gave me years ago that went out on me at the end of last summer.

Not really expecting this one to last all that long. Just a temporary hold over until I either fix the gas one or get a good model that's up to the job.

Commented AGAIN that I have so much stuff which is none of her flaming business. Also moaned that they had their toilet back up which is not my fault.
Then she also proceeded to tell me that her sister who have not rented from in 5 and a half years blames me for a pipe bursting after I moved out.

Had the CT scan done as well as molds for my new falsies. I told the guy doing them that he was probably going to pull a tooth out when he did them and he said that my step-bro-in-law said the same thing. He assured me that he hasn't lost one yet, and true to his word it's still in my mouth. Told him I wasn't really too worried about it since I just want them all out anyhow, but was just a bit worried that it would screw with my speech until we come to the final solution.

I know this guy isn't a surgeon there, but he could be training to be one. I had mentioned how my step-sis had said she was concerned that my bone loss may have been too severe for dentures. He told me "nah... it's never too late for dentures", which really put my mind at ease about the whole thing. I'm not sure what his full qualifications are to make a statement like that, but I can't imagine it would be good for business for an employee to make concrete statements like that without knowing for sure they were true. Five minutes earlier he was looking at my scans from over 3 years ago and was able to correctly guess the two teeth that I have already recently lost.

He let me know that if it's decided that we're actually going to remove all of my teeth that I'm going to be presented with two options. He also says that nobody picks option number two. The first option is to be immediately fitted for a temporary pair of dentures for the first 6 months that will need to be replaced with a 2nd set when things adjust. Option number two is to go without any teeth or dentures for 6 months.

Do you think my frugal ways are bordering upon insanity when I'm already considering letting people at work know that I'm not going to be speaking for 6 months, but I'll buy a boxing style mouth guard to keep in my mouth so my face isn't gross with my lips sunk in until I get the permanent dentures?

I don't know what to say. Idiot landlady was down again. Brought me my mail which I didn't think would be here for another week. Came in and looked around, complained about a bit of toilet paper that I hadn't flushed in the toilet, began worrying about her pipes. Commented AGAIN that I have so much stuff which is none of her flaming business. Also moaned that they had their toilet back up which is not my fault.
Then she also proceeded to tell me that her sister who have not rented from in 5 and a half years blames me for a pipe bursting after I moved out.

I could just scream!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In America, there is no IQ test to qualify for home ownership, nor landlady status.

Is your mail addressed to her? Or is she allowed to mess with your mail?

There isn't in Canada either.

All mail goes into one mailbox and so she can see my mail when getting hers.
My mail has my name but this address on it as I am renting a basement suite.

The state of emergency Victoria had declared for British Columbia is finally over. For this year.

Your landlady is a byatch. For example

NOTHING prevents her from putting up a second mailbox with your name on it except sheer cussedness.

But the housing situation in and around Vancouver still sucks ... Chinese are still laundering money thru real estate there, the prices are still out of sight, and the supply is very tight. So keep on looking for an alternative but don't get discouraged.

I know she is and I know they could do that but they won't. Even if the suite I am is illegal.

Well, I do get discouraged and frustrated with the whole thing.

I guess what I meant was ... don't beat yourself up over this. It's not you, it's the situation. So even tho being frustrated with the situation (and your landlady!) is natural, don't for one second think that this is your fault.

I know it's not my fault. It's also tiring.

But I keep going along.

She doesn't ever actually open your mail, does she?

Not sure about Canadian law, but that's kind of a big deal around here.
