I hope the weather clears up for you soon, Brenda! It'sgetting towards the end of February ... does that mean that you're thru the worst?

Oh btw - that Canadain friend that I mentioned - he's not just a Canadian, he's also the tennant representative for supported housing in Toronto. He knows a politician who is a representative for native peoples, unfortunately that friend moved from Vancouver to Winnipeg. (That was the person that I was hoping to get involved. Nothing gets things moving like pressure from the top.)

In general, he said that Toronto supported housing is a far better program than anywhere else in Cananda and that Vancouver area is particularly bad because it's overwhelmed with homeless drug addicts, but he did email contact info for support groups that you could reach out to in relation to your housing and transportation situation. I can pass that along, if you want. Because your employers sound like ditzes and your landlady sounds like a byatch, and maybe you could use someone on your side. Let me know one way or another.

That friend of yours that moved to Winnipeg can't help me anyways. My grandmother was an American Metis. Anyone who helps Canadian Indians or Metis won't help me because of that fact.

It rained last night but this morning more snow.

They are all ditzes and bytches around me.

I was hoping with it being the end of Feb it would clear out but not so far.

I will be going out for a walk in a bit to do the little I can get done.

I don't think my transmission issue is an actual problem with the transmission.

I've been doing a little online research today after I discovered that there are no youtube videos detailing how to swap one out on my year/make/model.

When I buttoned up the car after swapping everything out, I had a bitch of a time making all of the mounting brackets fit back together correctly. I wasn't even aware of the fact that this entire system was designed the way it is to allow a certain amount of engine movement while switching gears and going into park/drive/reverse, etc. (Seeing this in action kind of blew my mind, and I know that there's no way mine is working correctly right now)

I don't know the names of all of these things, but there's also the issue of the cables that are tied into the system that control acceleration and downshifting. I know that many years ago I adjusted the acceleration one in an attempt to raise my idle because of the (now fixed) issue where my car would stall on me.

It's still too cold for me to go to the lengths of pulling everything apart down to the timing belt to re-seat everything, but I did tighten up the acceleration cable a bit. It didn't fix the issue, but it certainly changed the behavior of the car. Hard to explain, and hard to tell if it made the problem better or worse, but it's different.

I may have mentioned that years ago I noticed a pronounced gear shift here and there on occasion. This would have been after I originally messed with that acceleration cable. The problem didn't get bad though until I did all the work on the car and had a bitch of a time forcing everything back in place.

I'm fairly confident that I caused the problem by putting it back together wrong. Fingers crossed that with the minimal driving I've done since that I haven't caused any permanent damage. As soon as we get back into the stable 50 degree weather, I'll be making a lot of adjustments and I'll replace the transmission fluid and put a new filter in there and hopefully everything will be copacetic.

That car still has a lot of miles left in the engine. If I can fix this and be reasonably sure it's good, I might even replace my exhaust system, the broken driver side interior handle and the two bad motors in the power windows. At that point, this car could probably last me long enough that I might actually have to buy new tires for it one more time before it goes to the scrap yard. :)

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Brenda, you have said that you are cold, often.

I keep forgetting to ask if you take Niacin. Forgive me if I've already asked this. I've helped many folk overcome their lifelong problems of being cold, by using this vitamin.

I also reduced my Blood Pressure by 40 in a couple days this past week. Same method.

As part of the "new normal" of stuck weather patterns, the storm track (which follows the jet stream) seems to have been stuck multi-month over So Cal. (This is like the Ridiculously Resilient Ridge being stuck off So Cal for years, but to opposite effect: Instead of bringing drought, this pattern is bringing rain)

Another rainstorm is sweeping thru the So Cal area, my informal rain gage indicates an inch of accumulation since last night, and another inch or so is predicted over the coming week. That will put us at about three inches over normal, which will really help the groundwater situation and, of course, the farms and wildlife.

Yay for us!!!

Now, if only Oregon and Four Corners would get some rain, we'd be all set!

*******

But I see that warm air has invaded Alaska, again, and pushed the cold air down into central US - AGAIN- which then moves northeast (It's that storm track, again) so weather-wise, sorry to say that it looks like y'all gonna get a late-season cold snap/ wind/ snow.

I'm cold often 1. because of where I am living with no heat.
2. I have low thyroid, so I take meds for that.

I try to take as few pills as possible. Thyroid, I have too and my seizure meds I have to. My doc threw vitamin D my way when I hit 50 and I try to take in as much calcium as possible.

I don't have high blood pressure. I've always been low.

I have never smoked.

Weather news: It's going to be 2 degrees tomorrow night while I'm out on a smoke break. Because... why not. First of 3 more nights in the single digits here in the great midwest. Two week forecast shows that toward the middle of the month we're supposed to see a few days of average temperatures for this time a year. Maybe then winter will finally be over for us here... maybe.

I don't think I mentioned my last power bill. It was WAY under what I was expecting, based off of the previous month and how absolutely frigid it had gotten for this billing cycle. I told myself I'd be happy if it were under $250, but I was expecting it to be as much as $270.

$185! It was $10 cheaper than the previous month!

To be fair, it was a short billing cycle. Only 29 days, compared to 34 the previous month. But still, I did the math and figured that if it had been 34 days, it still would have only been roughly $215.

Here's the rub though... My gas usage was WAY up from the previous month, which was totally expected, but my electricity use was WAY down. There's two reasons for this. The first is that I wasn't good about making my computer go into sleep mode (bad habit), and since I had finally hooked up my brother's XBox 360 so I could watch some Netflix when my other brother came in to visit me, I spent an inordinate amount of my days off playing an RPG on the projection screen TV.

Those 3 devices being on all the time caused most of the previous month's bill... not the gas for the heat!!!

I really need to get a flat screen TV, and replace my old beast of a desktop computer with a new laptop that would be much faster. The computer was really good for the time, but the PSU in it is rated at 1000 watts. I've always gotten a powerful PSU to handle the loads of whatever I put in my computer to minimize any voltage drops or spikes that could damage the equipment. But it's a full kilowatt hour every hour that I leave it on and forget to make it sleep.

The days of needing to build your own desktop to save money are really over now anyhow. Midrange laptops are pretty decently priced, and the last computer I built is so old now that it would be out performed by one of them. Especially since I don't own any devices with a solid state drive that makes things MUCH quicker. Laptops also have a much lower power rating while maintaining a safe environment for the electronics inside (as long as you do your research and don't buy one that borked that, like a lot of the cheaper HP laptops are guilty of).

I think at this point it's starting to cost me more not to upgrade this stuff, just due to the unnecessary energy bills.

Car News:

I'm 99.9% confident that my transmission isn't the car issue now.

It ain't perfect, and I still have strange behavior when shifting gears or down shifting, but tightening up that acceleration cable did improve things. I've been driving to work and back all week and I feel so much more comfortable in it now that I don't think in the back of my mind that my tranny might give out any minute.

Those cables look really bad though. Along with re-seating all of the mounting brackets and the alternator that I had to take out to fix the oil leak, I'm going to buy new cables (can't remember exactly what they're called).

To do list:

Re-mount everything.
New accelerator/down-shift cables.
Change transmission fluid and filter.
Change alternator belt.

If I do that and it fixes the problem, I will put more money and work into the car...

Secondary to do list:

Fix exhaust system.

I'm not sure if it's just a single segment that needs replacing, or if I'd have to replace the whole damn thing, but it leaks from the front of the car and my exhaust billows out around the front of the car from under the hood. Sounds like a damn jet engine too, it's so loud.

Replace window motors for the driver and passenger side front windows. I can't even put the passenger window up without 2 or 3 car startups if it was rolled all the way down now. Driver side window still hasn't had a problem closing all the way, but sometimes it really struggles with it.

Fix my damn broken door handle. I'm really getting tired of having to roll my window down to open the car from the outside.

Wash my car for the first time in about 8 years.

The body still looks great for a car that's almost old enough to be considered a classic. If I can get that tranny issue fixed and put the money into that other stuff, she's probably got another 100,000 miles in her. :)

Do Right, Be Right. :)

That exhaust description sounds like Headers. The bolts may have fallen out, or the gasket blew and needs replacement. If so, those would be things you can do.

There's definitely a hole in it. Not only have I seen it, but I temporarily closed it up before an emissions test last spring by wrapping some aluminum tape over it. I knew it wouldn't last long, but it gave me a few hours of quiet driving, and I passed the test. (I wasn't sure if that was necessary or not, but I didn't want to take any chances. I was already hemorrhaging oil all over the place...)

The part that has a hole is ribbed. I'm assuming that's for some sort of flexibility. I looked up exhaust systems for my make and model and it popped up with some ebay results, but they don't have any ribbed sections on them to show you.

I have no experience welding, and I don't even have a welder. If it would require welding to put that part in, I'll probably just buy a new exhaust system. They look to be under $175 on ebay.

Ok, I know I must sound likea miser obssessively counting gold, but the last storm that blew thru was predicted to drop about a third of an inch of rain, but my informal rain gage collected 1.8", or more than 5X predicted. The OFFICIAL rain gage in dtown LA has us at 2" over normal (at my house, more like 3+") and there are two more storms in the 10-day. This has been a banner year for rain for CA, since the storm track ran right thru CA the whole winter.

So, since the Ridiculously Resilient Ridge and RRR Redux had a 3.5 year lifespan, does THIS weather pattern have a prayer of being a multi-year event?? I'm not a modeller or climatologist, but I DO see that weather patterns are definitely stagnating. If so - bad news for Oregon and Alaska, but good news for us. Time will tell, but it will be something to watch for. In the meantime ... the water managers here in SoCalhave been busy stuffing all of that rainfall into the groundwater. except for the storm previous to this one, they've managed to capture all of the rainwater that made it to the San Gabriel River, which mostly never makes it to the ocean. They (CA water managers) really SHOULD invest in more groundwater recharge ... it can hold far more water and is far safer than dams. I wonder when they're going to get to it, instead of those giant aqueducts they keep thinking about.

Not sure if folks have heard some news.
Last month I-41 had a chain-reaction crash, involving something like 130 vehicles. 1 dead. Reportedly caused by ice on the road. Near Neenah, WI. The worst crash in State history.

This week I-43 had a chain-reaction crash, involving something like 30 vehicles. Watching the video, I don't know how the number was that low. This was at the northern end of I-43, in Green Bay, after cresting the peak of the Leo Frigo Bridge (spanning the Fox River Delta to the Bay).

I haven't heard of 2 chain-reaction crashes in the same season in WI before, not sure about other States.

Australia suffers through searing temperatures as heatwave reaches its peak

An extreme heatwave already breaking records across Australia is expected to peak in many parts of the country Friday, with temperatures forecast to stay above 40 degrees Celsius (104 F) for the sixth day in a row.
The six days from January 12 to 17 are all within Australia's ten hottest days on record, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology said.

And it's not just the highs that are making people sweat. Noona in western New South Wales broke an all time "minimum temperature" record Thursday night, with the heat levels remaining above 35.9 C (96 F) throughout the night, according to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.

The predicted rinfall here was about 1/2", but my informal rain gage says over and inch ... maybe 1.3". I'll measure it tomorrow.

The Yolo Bypass up by Sacto us once again flooded. Yipee!!!

Laundry day as enough snow has melted that I can get out and do it.

I think the last gasp of winter rain is coming thru this Sunday. I'll be sad to see winter leave; I like cooler weather. July, August, September: not my most favorite months here. But happy for you BRENDA that the snow is finally melting. We did the "spring forward" thing with the clocks, meaning longer days are here.

What's with chicken nowadays?? I buy organic whole chicken (the only organic meat we can afford) but yesterday I bought regular chicken breasts to attempt to make ancho-coated shredded chicken, and the breasts turned out hard and rubbery. I know that chicken breasts require special cooking otherwise they turn out dry and tasteless, but I've never had anything turn out like this before. I know there is a thing called "woody breast" which affects SOME chicken, but I'm thinking it affects a lot more than the 10% that this article claims, as more than half the pieces were inedible. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/woody-breast-could-bite-the-chicken-busin

/ BTW, I have never found "woody breast" in organic chicken, which says something about feeding GMO crops to animals! Also, as an aside, my Japanese friend told me that in Japan, thigh meat is considered to be superior to breast meat, since breast meat is usually drier and less tasty. I happen to agree!

And finally, our drip-maker gave up the ghost so I decided to try a hot plate/percolator method and I think that the flavor (what I can taste of it) is far superior to drip. "Cowboy coffee" also tastes better than drip.

Thanks for mentioning the clock change. I had no idea, and would have been an hour late for work tomorrow.

Although that shouldn't change the number of minutes per day of Sunshine.

I won't Sig. I only have a hate of winter because of where I am living is so darn hard to do anything.
I am looking forward to Spring and Summer. April, May, June, July, August and September up here in BC. Also sometimes into October. Nothing like an Indian Summer.

I forgot about the time change and when I looked at my computer clock, I was what is that about and then made a mad dash to change two and now have to change too more before tomorrow.

Can't help you on the chicken breasts. I just finished up some chicken thighs that I cooked in the oven covered in tomato paste with some salt, pepper and garlic powder. They were nice.

I will not miss winter one little bit.

Not that it's really gone yet... Warms up for a few days while I go back to work, but most of the nights when I'm back off look to dip low enough where it could still potentially snow or have that super fun icy mix.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Be careful out there Jack.

I slipped on a bit of ice yesterday that I didn't see.

Also I hate the time change. Forgot about it Saturday night and was fixing things on Sunday. Tired tonight as I kept waking up every hour. Ugh!

Canada does the time change too??? You poor dear. I think that bad idea was of US origin, and I hope your country comes to its senses soon!

Personally, I overslept, and thought I'd missed a dentist's appointment.

I think you would like it here in winter in SoCal. Too bad you can't be one of those "snowbirds" that travels to Arizona or Nevada for the winter!
