Our poor puppy-wuppy. I was weeding out in the front yard and, as usual, had puppy-wuppy on a rope so she could stay outside instead of being bored in the house. I check on her from time to time as she gets her rope tangled around things, so I untangled her rope, went back to weeding, and the next time I checked on her about 10 minutes later she was collapsed in the ground, unable to move. So I scooped her up and raced off to the vets, where she slowly recovered without treatment. They took a blood test before letting her home; I got the results this AM and two of her liver enzymes are completely out of whack, indicating some sort of liver insult.

Vet immediately asked me about sago palm when he read the results to me ... apparently notorious for causing liver failure in dogs, but altho they're all over the neighborhood we don't have any on our street, much less in our yard. I have been racking my brain trying to figure out what she might have gotten into, but none of the dog-toxic plants that I found are (1) in our yard or (2) cause liver damage. Vet gave her some liver-support meds. I'm so worried about puppy-wuppy; but all I can do is wring my hands and hope that she comes thru OK.

Awwwww... I hope she's alright, Sigs. :(

My brother's family is going through the end days of one of their dogs now. It's way too early for it. She was a rescue and was damn near starved to death when they got her, but they made her a good strong dog. I think she's only like 6 or 7 years old. Freakin' cancer... They're about $1,500 into treatments so far and the situation isn't improving. They can't do chemo since that results in a lot of toxicity around the house and there's two other dogs and my niece.

I think you would like it here in winter in SoCal. Too bad you can't be one of those "snowbirds" that travels to Arizona or Nevada for the winter!

I had a great Aunt that lived in Montana and every winter would head down to Arizona to get away from the cold there.

Puppy wuppy is at about 85% of normal energy, so as long as she stays at that level/ gets better I feel reassured. The liver has remarkable regeneration capacity.

On a happier note, we have a migration of painted lady butterflies through our region thanks t a "superbloom" of flowers in the deserts, spurred on by better-than-average rainfall. In my fair city, it's not a blizzard (yet) as we have seen in the past (altho that too may come) but I see at least three painted ladies everywhere I look. The cosmos, groundcover sage and california poppies are all blooming now, so the ladies are taking an occasional drink on their way thru.

Poor puppy! Poor you! I have my fingers crossed she makes a steady improvement and ends up good as new.

I too have painted lady butterflies where I am, but here they're like a river. There's a heavy flow of butterflies everywhere I've been today. It's so cool to see! It's great!

Well... for sure my car problem is not the transmission. Now that it's warmed up after I adjusted that cable, the problem is just a tiny fraction of what it used to be.

It's harder than I would have thought to find the part. I'm going to have to shop around because the place I usually go only has one option for one of the two cables I need and it's over $50 bucks. I'm sure I can get this stuff cheaper than that.

Warm weather is coming. :)

I think all I'll need is these new cables, a transmission fluid flush and filter replacement and I should get another 100k miles on that car. Probably last me another 10 years.

Warm weather heading your way??? Does this mean spring is finally coming???

Yanno, when I was a child AHEM! years ago, I do recall snow for Easter. Our mom would always dress us up in our Easter best, but sometimes it was pretty damn cold and a winter coat would have to go on top! And it was always fun, slipping and sliding on the ice in our shiny patent-leather shoes with the slick soles!

I think it really was colder back then. This year seems to be a reversion to yesteryear; I wonder if it will be warmer next year or if this is part of a multi-year warm Alaska/cold midwest-east pattern.

The two week forecast does look a lot warmer than it did when I looked about a week ago. A few cold days and freezing nights still when I'm off work, but most of them are in the low 50's now for the high.

Fingers crossed.

I know. Metric started coming when I was in elementary school. That's middle school to Americans. I have never gotten used to it. I had a hard enough time learning Imperial.

But the warm weather will be nice. Got my laundry done today went out with a winter coat on and when I got back, had to go out again but I was able to put on a sort of Spring jacket. Yay!

I wasn't aware of the history of metric in Canada.

I've said for decades now that the American school system has not only done its people a huge injustice by not teaching metric measurements to them when their kids, but I believe it was intentionally done to keep us from being competitive in the global market. There's really no other explanation for it. We're like the big retard of the world right now.

You get to be our ages and trying to learn metric units of measurement is almost as bad as trying to learn a foreign language. I've learned some minor things here and there when I've needed to, such as millimeter measurements for tools and such, but it's just about damn near impossible to visualize things like kilometers vs miles, and Celsius vs Fahrenheit when you've only known one for your whole life.

There's absolutely no denying that metric is the superior unit of measurement by leaps and bounds. But that didn't stop our teachers from only giving us about a week per year learning metric while focusing the rest of our learning on imperial, while at the same time beating it into our heads that we're superior to everybody else in the world in our social studies classes. It kind of subconsciously gave us the mentality that "so what that the rest of the world uses metric? We're better than everyone else and always will be."

At least, that's my take on it...

Cold again here for about 5 or six days. No spring coat for me. :(

I have a VERY divided experience. All of my labwork and scientific work is metric. I can understand and completely visualize flows in mLs/min, temperatures in an FCCU stack in degC, and concentration in micrograms per cubic meter. But then I get home and aside from the rough estimation 1qt appx 1L, and kph/10*6 is appx mph - I couldn't tell you how many mLs to use in a recipe, just cups. I couldn't tell you the degC to slow roast meat, but I can tell you in degF. And I couldn't tell you how many kg of vegetables for 12 meals, but I can tell you it's 6lbs. It's two completely separate worlds.

As a retired scientist who worked with engineers, when they quoted something at me ... size, speed, temperature ... I always had to clarify if they were speaking imperial or metric.

I found it much easier NOT to try and convert in my head, excpet for certain useful conversions (454 grams per pound, 22.8 liters per standard cubic feet, 22.4 liters per mole at standard conditions) .

I know how big a liter is, I know how big a quart is, I know roughly how big and inch is, and how long a kilometer is and a mile. The only measurement I HAD to convert was temperature because I could never get a "feel" for room temperature, human body temperature etc. It's tough.

Did you know that's why a Mars explorer crashed? The engineers were speaking miles and the programmers were thinking kilometers.

It was brought in by the Federal Government under Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau in 1970. Then it was all across the country by 1971. So, I had just started elementary school learning Imperial then flipped to metric. My poor little brain had a hard time.

I don't remember my social studies classes from elementary school. History classes were about Canada's place in the world and of course Canadian history. Explorers, meetings between First Nations people and explorers. Louis Riel and our first Prime Minister Sir John A. MacDonald.

Weather site I use says clear for the next 5 days at least then by next weekend rain. So, it will be back to a heavier coat for me.

In our never-ending quest to clean up and organize our house after working like dogs for 35 years, I finally found a nice nearby metal recycler who speaks English and whose parking lot isn't so littered with metal scraps that I'm worried about puncturing a tire when I go there. So hubby, daughter and I loaded up the van with old metal window blinds, an old solid-iron axle from a 1920's(?) cart, a 6' decorative lamppost, and a lot of scrap that our former employee left with us when he left the state. All together, it was about 215 pounds of metal, and our backyard, breezeway and garage no longer look like a hillbilly's house.

*****

Been keeping an eye on puppy-wuppy; giving her the Denamarin med that the vet prescribed and feeding her simple food (boiled chicken scraps, broth*, with a little sweet potato mixed in ...* not that her kidneys are compromised but IMHO it's prolly a good idea to flush the system after a toxic(?) insult) ... she's still less likely to pop out of bed and spontaneously run around and play, more likely to crawl under the covers and be someone's "couch buddy"... but when she's doing something that she likes ... going for a walk, playing with her toys... she has all of her usual energy. Her appetite is back to normal, she's peeing normally for all the broth that she's getting, and her poop isn't gray so I think she's recovering. Will continue to give her meds and broth until followup blood tests show that she's back to normal.

I could see that being very confusing for a kid. Depending on how old you were though, you probably had a much easier time than you would have doing it now. If science could ever figure out a way to safely allow adults to have the ability to learn like a child can, I suspect we'd all be living in a world that would make rapid advancements in IQ.

"Social Studies", at least where I went to elementary school (1st through 6th grade) were basically just another name for History class. We'd talk about current events once a week with our Weekly Reader, but for the most part it was all about how great we were. It wasn't just that class either. Our "Music" class was mostly singing songs from a book, half of which were odes to America.

Somehow, in all that time, we couldn't find more than 1 week per year to learn Metric units of measurement though.

I've said many times that the only thing I ever learned in 12 years of public school that helped me at all in the real world was a one semester Keyboarding class I took. By the time I was looking for a job, I took a test at a temp agency and could type 55 WPM with a 1% error rate. One of the ladies there was extremely impressed and said that was quite high for a guy and they didn't have a problem finding me the best job of my life only two days later.

Hi Jack,

I was around six or seven. School metric then at home and around my parents friends all Imperial.

I know we had social study classes, I just don't remember anymore what they were specifically about.
Assemblies we had to sing "God Save the Queen" and of course the national anthem. After that songs were a mix of things. Don't remember when I first learned pieces of "America the Beautiful". Hope that is the right title. Learned pieces of "God Bless America" from hearing Kate Smith sing it at the start of Philadelphia Flyers hockey games. *L*

Bummer for you. Rain is normal for BC, which is pretty much a whole temperate zone rainforest. So, I enjoyed the sun today(Monday) and will Tuesday and Wednesday. The weather site is now calling for rain only on Saturday which won't be so bad.

Fwiw the latest drought monitor is considerably improved: OR from severe drought to just dry/ drought, UT and almost all of CO to just abnormally dry. The only place that still sucks is NM just south of CO.

It would be nice if the drought monitor showed excess water too, NE is getting hammered with record breaking flood

As for us... one more storm was supposed to sprinkle but our fair city was in the path of a vigorous storm cell and we got about 1.5" in about an hour and a half. Not complaining!!

As for us... one more storm was supposed to sprinkle but our fair city was in the path of a vigorous storm cell and we got about 1.5" in about an hour and a half. Not complaining!!

Lucky you getting rain! Here was diddly squat. Not that I'm complaining about any rain falling anywhere. I was just hoping for one last area-wide hurrah! to close out the season.

I struggle through metric when I need it these days. It's not that big a deal to switch from SAE to Metric wrenches when I'm working on my car. Since I'm not a chemist, I never really have to think about units of weight or volume, let alone converting them. Every car I've owned shows MPH, as do all of the street signs.

For me, and I assume most Americans, using the Imperial system doesn't really matter all that much. I'm sure it made classes in College more difficult than they needed to be, but I did great in the science classes... it was college Algebra and Trigonometry that I couldn't wrap my head around.

I don't know. I just get a little pissed when I think back on all of those wasted years learning nothing that would help in real life, yet they never bothered to try to at least teach both systems to us in an effort to ween us off the vastly inferior Imperial system. It wouldn't be much consequence if this were still the 70's and everything was still pretty insular, but in this global economic world we find ourselves in today, American's really have been set up to fail when it comes to basic units of measurement and our inferior understanding of them compared to the rest of the world.

Still fairly lousy around here. Lots of rain, cold nights, barely warm enough to bother going out days if you don't need to. I'll take it over what we've had this winter though. It's finally over. :)

Maybe that's the good thing about being in Canada. Everything is labelled in metric but if you look hard enough you can still find Imperial. So, I don't think too much about it when I am grocery shopping. When I get the chance to bake, I still use Imperial then also "eyeball" things as my dad used to say. That just means to take a guess at what you need in a recipe. My dad was pretty good at it.

I can do math but nothing along the lines of trig or algebra and this coming from someone who wanted to be an archaeologist and would have had to had more math classes.

As I said Canada has always known its place in the world from my point of view. We weren't and aren't the biggest power but we try.

High school economics classes and then just my life situation gave me a fair idea on how to operate in the world. Or I like to think so.

Rain heading here for today, so it is heavy coat time for.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Seems to have been pretty busy around here, but I haven't been able to contribute much. I goas far as my energy and my knees take me, which sometimes isn't very far!

With our help, hubby is finally getting his garage workshop in order. We managed to mount the drill press, band saw and table saw (heavy!!! Made in Canada!) on rolling stands, which is very helpful in a small space.

Puppy-wuppy is back to her old self ... I scraped in a bit of "super plus multi-B vitamin" into her food with the idea that B1 is destroyed with cooking so she might be deficient eating cooked meat, and whaddayaknow, she's bouncing all over the place. It's such a pleasure seeing her pogo thru the groundcover and jumping up into the bushes looking for lizards. The ony wrinkle that I can see is that she seems to have acid reflux... go figure!... but I'm trying to manage that with diet.

Still weeding. And weeding, and weeding. I'm going to have to dragoon dear daughter into the effort again, as the weeds are sprouting faster than I can pull them! But the cosmos and California poppy are creating a riot of color in the front yard: Deep magenta to pale purple to pale pink and white cosmos; and pale lemon-yellow to gold, deep saffron, pale peach and old-rose poppies. Such a beautiful display. I hope that my perennials will be ready to take over when these annuals die back, but I seriously love looking out the front window at all of the colors, and the rocks and ornamental grasses ... it's the best of everything I like about fields all in one place.

Well, onward. Next week we're having three large windows replaced, then we can all conga-line back to our original bedrooms, which is another opportunity to go thru suff and give it the old heave-ho. Sooner or later (maybe in about 2 years) all of the big stuff will be done and I can concentrate on potting plants or learning to sew, or something!

We do still produce good things here in Canada.

Glad to hear doggy is doing even better. Hope she stays on the right track.

Clean up is good.

Flowers not so much. My allergies are trying to wake up again. I can feel it in my eyes.

I am out for a walk in a bit. Got a couple of chores to do today. It is still trying to rain though.

Well, I went for my early mammogram yesterday. I was late to the appointment as missed buses and bus break down happened.

When I get there the nurse doing the test seemed to wonder why I was there has I have had two biopsies done and both came back negative. They feel that why then maybe next year I won't bother.

Also because I am doing so much heavy work around this place I have lost 4pds over the last year or whatever.

Great to hear about your dog, Sigs.

And great news about the mammogram, Brenda.

I wouldn't just take somebody's word for it that you don't need to get checked though. My old man was telling me that he used to get one of those colonoscopies fairly regularly after something benign but noteworthy was found a while back. However, they're saying that "new studies" have said that they don't need to be done so frequently, but his doctor at the VA was honest with him and told him that he doesn't agree and that it's just a way for the ass-hats on top to save money.

I don't know anything about mammograms, or at what age and what frequency one should be getting them, but I would look into that and fight them on it if you feel strongly otherwise.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I'm not and my GP is a worrier as my mom had colon cancer.

I think this nurse's point was since the biopsies were negative then I have nothing to worry about.

Any cancer tests are my decision. So, I will see what next year brings.

Mammograms in Canada are recommended by the Canadian Cancer Society to be done once a year after you hit age 50. You stop when you are over 70 if they have always been clear.

Since dear daughter loves snow, took her up into the mountains to see the last of the snow. The route we took was thru a pass and up the backside. It's been years and years and years and years since I was up there; I forgot how desert-like the backside of the mountains are at their base. It was kind of a unique experience, traveling from desert scrub (yucca, saltbush) up into pines and snow. There were a few ski slopes that were still open, and even tho the temp was around 55F and the snow was slushy there were still a few people getting in their last runs of the season. Dear daughter thought she might like to try skiing next year: gulp! Last time I went skiing was 35 years ago. But it's something to plan on for next year; maybe if my knees are in better shape I can go too.

Windows are installed, needs inspection before the contractors can button up the walls. One project down; a couple of dozen more to go.

Weather has been dry and varying between cool and sunny to hot and sunny. I assumed that the last storm was the last of the season, but even tho this weekend is predicted to be 85F next weekend we may get more rain. Crazy weather, for Socal!

Easter coming up. Need to do something special with the family and send flowers to my aunts and uncles and cousins back east. The previous generation is quite elderly, my generation is old; my nieces and nephews and second cousins are all grown up. Hard to believe how much time has passed. The decades seem so eventful; they went by in a flash.
