Yanno, when I was a child AHEM! years ago, I do recall snow for Easter. Our mom would always dress us up in our Easter best, but sometimes it was pretty damn cold and a winter coat would have to go on top! And it was always fun, slipping and sliding on the ice in our shiny patent-leather shoes with the slick soles!

I think it really was colder back then. This year seems to be a reversion to yesteryear; I wonder if it will be warmer next year or if this is part of a multi-year warm Alaska/cold midwest-east pattern.

But the warm weather will be nice. Got my laundry done today went out with a winter coat on and when I got back, had to go out again but I was able to put on a sort of Spring jacket. Yay!

I wasn't aware of the history of metric in Canada.

I've said for decades now that the American school system has not only done its people a huge injustice by not teaching metric measurements to them when their kids, but I believe it was intentionally done to keep us from being competitive in the global market. There's really no other explanation for it. We're like the big retard of the world right now.

You get to be our ages and trying to learn metric units of measurement is almost as bad as trying to learn a foreign language. I've learned some minor things here and there when I've needed to, such as millimeter measurements for tools and such, but it's just about damn near impossible to visualize things like kilometers vs miles, and Celsius vs Fahrenheit when you've only known one for your whole life.

There's absolutely no denying that metric is the superior unit of measurement by leaps and bounds. But that didn't stop our teachers from only giving us about a week per year learning metric while focusing the rest of our learning on imperial, while at the same time beating it into our heads that we're superior to everybody else in the world in our social studies classes. It kind of subconsciously gave us the mentality that "so what that the rest of the world uses metric? We're better than everyone else and always will be."

At least, that's my take on it...




Cold again here for about 5 or six days. No spring coat for me. :(

It was brought in by the Federal Government under Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau in 1970. Then it was all across the country by 1971. So, I had just started elementary school learning Imperial then flipped to metric. My poor little brain had a hard time.

Bummer for you. Rain is normal for BC, which is pretty much a whole temperate zone rainforest. So, I enjoyed the sun today(Monday) and will Tuesday and Wednesday. The weather site is now calling for rain only on Saturday which won't be so bad.

I struggle through metric when I need it these days. It's not that big a deal to switch from SAE to Metric wrenches when I'm working on my car. Since I'm not a chemist, I never really have to think about units of weight or volume, let alone converting them. Every car I've owned shows MPH, as do all of the street signs.

For me, and I assume most Americans, using the Imperial system doesn't really matter all that much. I'm sure it made classes in College more difficult than they needed to be, but I did great in the science classes... it was college Algebra and Trigonometry that I couldn't wrap my head around.

I don't know. I just get a little pissed when I think back on all of those wasted years learning nothing that would help in real life, yet they never bothered to try to at least teach both systems to us in an effort to ween us off the vastly inferior Imperial system. It wouldn't be much consequence if this were still the 70's and everything was still pretty insular, but in this global economic world we find ourselves in today, American's really have been set up to fail when it comes to basic units of measurement and our inferior understanding of them compared to the rest of the world.



Still fairly lousy around here. Lots of rain, cold nights, barely warm enough to bother going out days if you don't need to. I'll take it over what we've had this winter though. It's finally over. :)

It's such a pleasure seeing her pogo thru the groundcover and jumping up into the bushes looking for lizards. The ony wrinkle that I can see is that she seems to have acid reflux... go figure!... but I'm trying to manage that with diet.

Still weeding. And weeding, and weeding. I'm going to have to dragoon dear daughter into the effort again, as the weeds are sprouting faster than I can pull them! But the cosmos and California poppy are creating a riot of color in the front yard: Deep magenta to pale purple to pale pink and white cosmos; and pale lemon-yellow to gold, deep saffron, pale peach and old-rose poppies. Such a beautiful display. I hope that my perennials will be ready to take over when these annuals die back, but I seriously love looking out the front window at all of the colors, and the rocks and ornamental grasses ... it's the best of everything I like about fields all in one place.

Well, onward. Next week we're having three large windows replaced, then we can all conga-line back to our original bedrooms, which is another opportunity to go thru suff and give it the old heave-ho. Sooner or later (maybe in about 2 years) all of the big stuff will be done and I can concentrate on potting plants or learning to sew, or something!

I wouldn't just take somebody's word for it that you don't need to get checked though. My old man was telling me that he used to get one of those colonoscopies fairly regularly after something benign but noteworthy was found a while back. However, they're saying that "new studies" have said that they don't need to be done so frequently, but his doctor at the VA was honest with him and told him that he doesn't agree and that it's just a way for the ass-hats on top to save money.

I don't know anything about mammograms, or at what age and what frequency one should be getting them, but I would look into that and fight them on it if you feel strongly otherwise.
