Quick reply.

I added a lot and edited things before you replied as I re-read it and thought of other stuff to add.

But, yeah, that's kind of what I'm thinking is going on here.

I don't remember exactly why I put the level so high in that well before the pump triggers because my memories of those days are foggy, but I'm pretty sure after having to change out two sumps in freezing water up to my knees I didn't want to burn out a 3rd pump and because of the crack bringing a lot of water right back in I didn't want the thing going off every minute for a few days straight during and after a heavy storm.

I think now that the pipe is fixed, I've mitigated that very large problem and if I can manage to get the pump situated where it goes off before the inlet pipe, or at least only halfway up the inlet pipe, then it should keep this from happening again. (All of those gallons of heavy water building up 10" to 12" above the inlet pipe while the pump is doing nothing is preventing a constant good flow of inlet water to the well via gravity, I would guess)

I'm glad I left the trench open during all of this to figure these things out. Had I filled it up first and I saw this behavior with the pump intervals, I'd probably be digging it all right back up again today, confident that it was busted again.

None of this behaved the way I expected it to, but what do I know? I'm an idiot. Until last night, I think I've spent the last 8 years in this house diagnosing my water issues as if I were trying to diagnose cancer via WebMD.

Hey Jack - I guess we X-posted! This was to Signy, posted before your expl came up.

I have one quick comment off the top of my head - before I think about I too deeply - "1. I need to shorten the float and get the pump lower into the well so it goes off earlier and stays on until the level gets lower before shutting off without going too low as to make the pump suck in air." Is your pump submerged or above the well? Submerged pumps might rely on water for cooling, so if submerged, you probably shouldn't allow the water level to expose it.

The pump is submerged when the water is already very much above the inlet pipe. When it shuts off (usually around 28 seconds of operation) it is almost entirely exposed with just enough water to keep it from sucking in air.

Everything I've read didn't mention overheating at all, but did mention that if you suck in air instead of water you're going to have a burnt out pump almost immediately.

I'm exhausted...

Did way more than I thought I'd do today.

Got the hole filled in, and I re-graded about 90% of the dirt bed in front of the house and got the patio pavers under where the gutters need to be installed so they don't divot the ground anymore. I was able to monitor every time the sump pump went off while I was out there too since it was easy to hear with the cap off of the cleanout.

When I started, it was close to 20 minutes between cycles. Strangely, when I filled everything in, it went back down to around 16 to 17 minutes between cycles. Maybe this had to do with me packing dirt down all over the place, and maybe from putting dirt down in the hole that was very wet and directly above the inlet?

I dunno... but I'm not worried that anything broke when I put it back together. Flow looks amazing compared to when the pipe was cracked when the pump is flowing, water continues to run around 20 seconds after the pump stops and then the flow dies, and the water is clean with no evidence of any dirt being pulled into it. I was able to see witness this with around 20 cycles while I was out there working.

We're back close to 20 minutes between cycles right now. I'd imagine that will be quite a bit less by the time I wake up tomorrow.

Windows 10?

Is it giving you any sort of error, or after you rebooted is it giving you any messages regarding the failed update?

They are rather important. I know you don't use credit cards, but there's other reasons why you'd want at least the basic protection of having an updated windows.

I had problems with one of the installs in the last 6 months that took a few tries to get right. I can't remember what I did other than just trying to let it do its thing when I was going to work so I wouldn't miss having the computer and it finally went through. Maybe we could figure it out.

Yeah that's the one.

No, I don't shop on line at all.

I got a "could not complete the install" message.

I made one mistake on its first try, as I turned my computer back on and that screwed it up. Then Saturday or Friday night, I let it go but it still didn't complete it. So, when it comes up again I will let it go.

Trump-Ukraine: John Bolton 'sounded alarm about Rudy Giuliani's actions'

The former US national security adviser, John Bolton, was reportedly so alarmed at a back-channel effort to pressure Ukraine to investigate Donald Trump’s political rivals that he told a senior aide to report it to White House lawyers.
The revelation of Bolton’s involvement in the effort to block a shadow foreign policy aimed at Trump’s political benefit emerged from congressional testimony given by his former aide, Fiona Hill, the former top Russia expert in the White House.

Fiona Hill: British-born Russia expert drawn into impeachment storm

Hill, the British-born former senior director for Europe and Russia on the National Security Council, spoke to three House committees for 10 hours.
According to the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, Hill described a sharp exchange on 10 July between Bolton and the US ambassador to the European Union, Gordon Sondland, about the role played by Trump’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, to persuade the Ukrainian government to open investigations into Democrats, including former vice president Joe Biden.

Hill said Bolton instructed her to tell the National Security Council’s attorney that Giuliani was acting in concert with White House chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, in a rogue operation with legal implications.
“I am not part of whatever drug deal Rudy and Mulvaney are cooking up,” Bolton instructed Hill to tell the NSC lawyer, according to her testimony.
She said that Bolton had told her on an earlier occasion: “Giuliani’s a hand grenade who’s going to blow everybody up.”
Hill also testified on Monday morning before three congressional committees about Trump’s decision, taken despite strenuous objections from aides including herself, to recall the US ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch.
The Washington Post reported that she had confronted Sondland over the Giuliani’s activities, which were not coordinated with officials charged with carrying out US foreign policy. Sondland is due to give his version of events on Thursday.
According to Fox News, Hill told congressional investigators that she and other officials went to the national security council lawyer with their concerns that the White House was seeking to prompt Ukraine to open investigations into Trump’s rivals.
Hill’s lawyer had earlier rejected arguments from the president’s attorneys that her testimony on Ukraine was covered by executive privilege.

In a letter to the White House, the lawyer, Lee Wolosky, said much of the material was already in the public domain and that “deliberative process privilege “disappears altogether when there is any reason to believe government misconduct occurred.”

The latest major Trump resignations and firings

The week could deteriorate rapidly for Trump, whose effort to rally defenders in his own party has been damaged by concerns about a growing disaster in northern Syria, following Trump’s abrupt pullback there, and a sense that major secrets attached to the Ukraine scandal are yet to come out.
Sondland’s testimony on Thursday comes after a previous attempt by the hotelier-turned-diplomat to testify was blocked by the state department, as part of a blanket White House defiance of the impeachment inquiry.
Congress is also due this week to receive relevant documents from an array of the most powerful figures in the administration, including the vice-president, the defense secretary and the White House chief of staff.
Out of the flow of new information, congressional investigators hope to fill in the picture of the Trump administration’s dealings in Ukraine, and answer the question of whether Trump’s conduct rises to the “high crimes and misdemeanors” cited in the constitution as grounds for impeachment.
The impeachment inquiry was sparked by a whistleblower complaint filed in August that in part described a 25 July phone call between Trump and the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, in which Trump requested the “favor” of an investigation into a potential 2020 rival, Joe Biden.
Trump and Republicans have repeated unproven allegations of corruption against Hunter Biden, the former vice-president’s son who was on the board of a gas company in the eastern European country while his father was involved in international efforts to curb corruption in its government.
The stark nature of Trump’s request to Zelenskiy has boosted support for Trump’s impeachment, according to polling averages.
The administration has struggled to find a message to rebut the perception of its own corruption, with the president, at times seemingly alone in his own defense, lashing out on Twitter against Democrats, the whistleblower, the media, Biden and more.
Hill’s testimony could significantly add to allegations of wrongdoing by Trump and Rudy Giuliani, the former New York mayor commonly described as the president’s personal lawyer, who headed up the president’s personal agenda in Ukraine while working on behalf of local clients of his own. Trump and Giuliani have denied wrongdoing.
A good deal of Hill’s testimony focused on Yovanovitch, a widely respected diplomat who worked under six presidents and who defied the state department gag order to testify herself last Friday.

Yovanovitch said she had been the target of a smear campaign inside the administration fueled by Giuliani.

“I do not know Mr Giuliani’s motives for attacking me,” Yovanovitch said in an opening statement released to the press. “But individuals who have been named in the press as contacts of Mr Giuliani may well have believed that their personal financial ambitions were stymied by our anti-corruption policy in Ukraine.”
Two Giuliani business associates from the former Soviet Union, Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, were arrested at a Washington DC-area airport last week on suspected campaign finance violations regarding a large check they wrote to a political committee supporting Trump and donations to at least one Republican congressman, Pete Sessions of Texas.
On Monday, Giuliani told Reuters he was paid $500,000 for work he did for a company co-founded by Parnas. Giuliani said he was hired to consult and provide legal advice to company Fraud Guarantee’s technologies.
After a May 2018 meeting between Parnas and Sessions, Sessions sent a letter to the secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, urging Yovanovitch’s dismissal because she had “spoken privately and repeatedly about her disdain for the current administration’”.
Yovanovitch denied the charge but she was dismissed nevertheless, in a move potentially driven by Ukrainians elements she was ostensibly charged with confronting and helping to dismantle.
It was also reported last week that Giuliani himself is the subject of an investigation by federal prosecutors in Manhattan.

Yeah. If you can, just let it run overnight when you're going to go to sleep.

I know I had problems a few times with it with one of the recent installs, but I don't think I actually had to do anything but let it try a few times and it worked itself out.

Windows 10 is pretty amazing compared to all of the versions before it. I miss a lot of features that I used to use a lot back with Windows XP that they've never gone back to, but as far as security and stability go I'm very impressed with it.

It's likely not super critical if you're not being harangued 24/7 about installing it.

The one I had problems with was a pretty major one that Windows was harassing me for not installing yet. Most updates will just happen whenever you reboot. This was one of those ones where the computer would tell you it was rebooting if you didn't click within 15 minutes to tell it otherwise.

Very annoying when I'd be away when the message came up and it would take an hour to update only to fail so I'd have to deal with it again.

Credit cards cover fraud as long as you're watching them at least once a month, which I do. The one time it's ever happened to me, they let me know about the activity and asked if it was me.

Don't have any real money to steal...

I'm not an interesting person, so I'm not worried about anybody spying on me either.

Yeah. I know about that. My mom thought she had paid for Microsoft customer support back when they had a business. It's not fun trying to get somebody you care about to realize that they've been taken. Something similar almost happened again to them just recently. I hate that they're so far away and I can't babysit them.

You really don't have to worry about things financially though. There's a lot of security out there, and although none of it is bullet proof, they're really good about getting your money back to you. I couldn't say if they actually catch any of these people though, because when I've inquired about it in the past their go-to statements were along the lines of that's legal info I'm not privy to. I don't even know how true that is, or if that's just what the low level employees are told to say if they're asked, but I don't really care as long as I have my money.

You're safe as long as you're not clicking emails that go to fake sites that look like your financial sites, or you don't go giving out things on the phone like your social security number. Really, don't ever go to any sites with personal info required from email links, and instead go directly to the site in a separate tab.

I've been doing online banking for nearly 20 years now. It's easy, it's convenient, and overall it's so much better than the old way of doing things like driving to your insurance agent and hand delivering a check. I've only been "hacked" twice, and almost immediately the companies took care of it.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Oh... and if you have a VPN, dump it immediately.

I've been saying for over a year that one of two things happen if you sign up for one.

A) You're put on a government watch list with your actual name tied to the account. "What are you hiding that you need a VPN?" The government has access to whatever goes through a VPN at any time it requests it. There is no such thing as anonymous internet browsing.

B) You're opening yourself up to weak security at these firms and/or being scammed by the firms themselves and/or just adding an unnecessary 3rd party into the mix that has access to all of your online activity, as well as paying for something you don't need if you have Windows Defender, AVG Free, Malwarebytes all installed and properly updated.

"A" hasn't happened yet, but I'm sure it eventually will. "B" however?

https://techcrunch.com/2019/10/21/nordvpn-confirms-it-was-hacked/

I see a lot of YouTube content creators I really enjoy shilling NordVPN and other VPN services all the time and I'm ALWAYS trying to tell them not to because their credibility will be destroyed. I've been doing that for at least a year. Then the Nord thing happens...

This guy just made the video two days ago I've been trying to tell people about for a year. I hope both content creators and the general public see it and heed his warnings.

As for me, I find waiting out the extreme fire risk is wearing. I feel I can't entirely relax - that I have to keep one eye open and one ear cocked all the time. With any luck the winds'll be gone by the end of tomorrow.

I'm finishing preparing my beef, potato and green chili stew. After that I'll be cooking chicken pot pie, but without the crust, since wheat really bothers me. So instead, I'll also add potatoes! I think it'll be really tasty.

Once that's done, I'll be back to being stocked up with a good supply of meals with big helpings of vegetables.

Nothing but solid rain here for 3 days straight, into snow tonight. Those poor kids. I don't think they're going to get any trick or treating done this year :(

Had another 1.5 inches in the last 48 hours, so it was a pretty decent test so far after the re-grading and filling in the sump pipe. Haven't been outside this morning to get another look at everything, but it looked fine yesterday.

I shortened the float mechanism so it's not going off when the water gets so high, but because of the nature of the corded floats that also means that it doesn't stay on as long either (about 21 seconds per cycle as opposed to 29 seconds before). The right way to do this is going to be to tear everything up to the check valve out, clean out the well and possibly dig it down further, cut all new pipes for the new length and try to get that pump at least 8" lower than it is right now.

No way I can even think to try that with the rain right now. Going to try to do that once everything is frozen outside and I don't have a steady flow of water to the basement.

In the mean time, it's never gone off for more than around 6+ minutes at a time whenever I've been paying attention. Not sure if that means anything though since this is 1.5 inches in around 48 hours this time compared to 2 inches in only 20 or so hours last time.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

You have to realize that I decongest my nose and rinse it with specially-compounded solution of mupirocin antibiotic plus budenoside steroid before bed, PLUS I use a nose strip, AND I use a HEPA filter in the bedroom AND we changed out carpets for hardwood AND I'm giving myself allergy shots, AND I had two sinuse surgeries! I'm doing everything I know to reduce my nasal congestion because it has been ruining my sleep for years. I STILL can't smell much of anything. Maybe the humidifier for Santa Ana conditions is the very last thing I need to finally get a reasonable night's sleep.

Jeez... it's COLD today. Only a high of 34 here, and the snow was already started when I woke up. Certainly didn't see that in the forecast leading up to today.

Unfortunately, my friend hasn't made it back here this week to install the door, and I was waiting on him to help me get the plastic over the louvers as well. Didn't think that would be a problem, but we've had 2 days of rain and now snow.

I've been through quite a few heavy rains and thunderstorms with zero windows behind those louvers, but just as I suspected, snow has been where the damage was done on the front side of that porch. The wall is wet now. Not drenched, but it's taking on water. I put a little plastic solution from the inside at the bottom that negates most of that as a temporary measure, but it's not waterproof. There's no way I'm going to be able to make it waterproof until I do a solution from the outside, and there's no way I'm doing it in the snow and wind and 30 degree temps.

Not a good day here. :(

Well ... crap.

I can only hope that this is WAAYYY too early for the start of winter, which by my recollection starts after Thanksgiving, and the weather moderates a bit in the next few weeks. I'd guess the primary goal would be to put plastic up on the porch? Since it seems the sump pump / grading / pipe situation is good enough for now?

Though I was thinking about your sump pump a little while back and wondering if it's at the very bottom of the hole. If not, perhaps you could get a bit of extra water removal out of it by lowering the pump or inlet so it doesn't suck air, and readjusting the float to match, without doing anything else?

The saga continues...

Power went out for no damn reason at all for two hours around 5PM. Went outside to pull my cans in while I had my last cigarette, because I knew this was going to be terrible...

I am so grateful that I didn't throw away the two large heavy duty plastic sump wells I had purchased years ago and never did anything with. They are the only reason I didn't flood.

By the time I had gotten down there, which had only been about 10 minutes after the power went out, the well was already overflowing and getting the dirt wet in the crawl space.

At first, I emptied filled up the 3 gallon bucket by hand a few times, crab walked it to the toilet, and realized that this was a losing battle. Then I remembered the plastic wells.

I dragged both of them down there and I filled both of them up by hand with the drinking glass to the top. I'm guessing they're around 30 to 35 gallons each... maybe more. I couldn't find any markings.

Water level in the pit was about 1" to 1 1/2" below the top afterward.

I then proceeded to carry out another 44 buckets worth of water to the toilet while trying to be quick about it while also maintaining a pace that wouldn't make my heart explode. In the middle of it, I had to get my flashlights and put them at various places, because other than the faint glow of 4 LED flashlights, I was in complete blackness for the last 20 or so minutes.

After a while, I just kind of resigned myself to the task. It's not as if there was anything else worth doing. I wouldn't have been able to sleep, knowing my basement was flooding. I was wet. I wouldn't be able to really take a shower in the dark. I would be without heat in the house for as long as the power was out with the low dropping to 25 tonight, possibly forcing me to figure out how to use my stove for heat while my basement flooded...

I figured I'd just keep bailing out water until A) the power came back on, B) my legs gave out or my heart exploded, or C) the flashlights died and I was left in complete darkness.

By around quarter to 7 it came on, and I can't even begin to tell you what a relief it was.

I re-bailed the water from the wells back into the sump, tried to clean up as best I could, verified everything is still working with the pump and was thankful to call it a night.

I'm so fucking done with this house.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

So...

My step dad says, you have a generator, why were you bailing water.

He's right. He gave it to me. I really don't have any excuse other than I was completely unprepared. 6 years without a power outage and I either thought I'd never get another one, or I thought it was magically going to just work in an emergency situation without any plan or the proper setup.

I've got extension cords, although I had always assumed that none of them would be up to the task. They're either low gauge and short, or high gauge and long. I'm pretty sure that doubling up on cords is a big no-no as well.

I'm going to spend some money I don't have and buy one that's up to the task after planning some things out and taking measurements. I'm really hoping that I can run it from my garage and get away with a 100" cord. I see a highly rated 20 AMP 100' cord that's $35 off that I could get for around 65 bucks right now. If I need to get a 150' cord though, I don't even want to think about how much that's going to run me.

I figure I'll get some brackets, hang the female end somewhere right by the sump, hang it through the ceiling in the crawl to the door and keep it rolled up somewhere near the entrance.

If I have my generator set somewhere in the garage ready to go with a can of gas that's full, all I'll have to do next time is go down, plug the sump into the cord, unravel it out to the garage and plug it in the generator, fill her up and get her started and be done with it.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

SIX: Jeez, What a trial!

Seems like the storm went from west to east, as usual. Sis texted that after a day of rain she had water coming up from the floor drain in the basement. That's not storm water, that's sanitary sewer water, so today she has to swab the decks with bleach. That used to be such a big problem ... like, 1 foot deep problem ...that we set up a bunch of storage shelves for her to get everything up off the floor.

In her neighborhood there is a small group of a half-dozen houses where the power ALWAYS went out with the slightest wind, or sometimes for no reason at all. It took NYSG&E over a dozen years, and a call to one of the local TV complaint resolution shows, to fix the problem, which turned out to be an untrimmed tree, if you can believe it!

Anyway, her neighbor let her run a power cord from their house to hers. She used it to keep the furnace and frig running. Maybe you can use your generator to keep your sump and/or furnace going, that way you can be warm AND dry!

Sorry to hear about your friend not coming over. I hope he does at soonest possible, your three-month forecast is colder and wetter than usual.

BTW, I know the floor was a big headache when it wasn't done and a big relief when it was but ... what kind of floor are you talking about? 4X8 3/4 plywood, right? Just curious.

Well, I don't want to deal with the consequences of making myself sick.

Also because my seizure meds are so sensitive to fruit acids, he again made the comment that I should ask for them to be changed. Had to explain to him that that is not how they work. I am stuck with these things until they stop working or they can't go any higher on the dose.

Just a brief weather update - the official red-flag warning has been dropped, even though the temps are a little warmer and the air is still dry, dry, dry. For example, the relative humidity at the moment is 4%. I think they consider wind, temps, and humidity in their red-flag estimation?/ calculation? and the winds are down. The low humidity and higher temps will continue through saturday, by sunday the humidity'll be up over 15% and hold there through the forecast, while the temps will be the same as now.

Jack - I feel for you! I have also pushed myself at times in my life to the feeling like my heart would explode. It's an extremely uncomfortable situation. Wasn't his fault for not coming. It's been raining like crazy the last 3 days until it turned to show. I really couldn't work on it in those conditions so I didn't even bother calling him. Tentatively, we're planning on Monday. It's got to be done by Wednesday at the latest though because the bottom really drops out on Thursday.

Yes. The floor is 4x8 3/4" plywood (non-green). The floor itself wasn't really getting wet... It was the stuff leaking in the crappy aluminum down the inside walls, no doubt getting our new joists and sills (green) all wet. It's what's been going on for years now behind the scenes, I just now had the displeasure of actually witnessing it firsthand.

Yeah. I think the worst part about last night though was the not knowing. Without anything better to do I figured I'd just push on until an outside circumstance prevented me from doing it anymore. Once I got in the rhythm and stopped being in full panic mode, I was able to get a pace going that was probably maintainable for a few more hours while also seeing a very slight noticible improvement in the water level in the well say every 15 minutes of bailing or so.

That being said though, I knew it was only a matter of time until something gave out, and although I was hoping the power was going to come back on I figured I was just postponing the inevitable.

Glad I didn't give in to that doom and gloom in the back of my head and kept pressing on though. The power came back on and the basement was bone dry because of the work I did.

Just got back from the hardware store. I was wrong about the sale price I saw. (That was for a 50 footer).

The one I bought is 10GA, 15A, 100FT industrial, rated for outdoor use. About $120 with tax and a few hooks to install it in my crawlspace. Amazon has the exact same cord for $200, and I saw it on another site for $220. Didn't know if that was a mistake or not, but I wasn't going to wait and find out so I ran up there right away and bought it for an insanely low price.

When I told my step dad the one I got he laughed and said that I'm not going to have any problems running the pump off of that cord and he thinks I went overboard.

Better safe than sorry, I figure. I don't want to have to worry about this bullshit anymore and it's not worth worrying just to save $40 bucks.

My plan is to install everything tomorrow and do a live field test with the generator and sump pump. No sense in waiting until the next emergency to figure out if it's going to work right.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Perfecto!

Everything works great. I let the generator run for an hour straight. I immediately forced a near full well to pump out off the generator, and followed that up with a full load of laundry. I'm still getting enough water in through the inlet for it to go off by itself every 10 minutes or so, so it went off at least another 4 times on its own before I shut everything down and put it back on the main.

The hooks I bought were perfect for the application too, but my cheap ass didn't buy enough of them. I don't think I really had any idea how thick and heavy this cord was going to be until I got down there with it. Going to pick up a half dozen of them later today or tomorrow, get them installed and also figure out if the shelf support I was planning on using is going to be durable enough for the job or if I'm going to need to buy something better. The support I have is probably good enough, but I'm going to be hanging about 80 feet of the heaviest damn extension cord I've ever owned on it, so I need to make absolutely sure it will work for the long haul.

While I was at it, I also did a test on my snow blower and fired up my leaf blower for good measure. Went to fill the air in the snowblower tires and wouldn't you know it... One of them are flat. :( I'm not sure why that always happens with small tires in my garage like that. This is my third flat since I've owned the house. I'm sure those tires aren't cheap to replace and/or fix either. Going to want to take care of that ASAP either way though.

Won't let that bring my mood down though. It's been a great day. :)

Do Right, Be Right. :)
