Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Hi Brenda - I hope you have good veins and a good vampire and good results!

Just fwiw as some background, I used to be a vampire on a couple of my jobs, and it was sometimes more uncomfortable for me than it was for the recipient. One of my coworkers felt the same way. Her motto was - I shake like a leaf but I never miss. I didn't shake but I made following her motto of never missing my goal. I only missed once, but that was because the guy had such a needle phobia he moved his arm 3' off the bed while I was trying to draw blood. They never let us use butterflies either

nice small needles with a 'butterfly' grip at one end and a tube with a fitting attached at the other end, used by opening up a 'vacutainer'

and letting the sample flow in. Butterflies are far more comfortable for the patient and controllable for the vampire, but we couldn't use them because of - what else - cost. A vacutainer is a blood sample tube with a vacuum in it and often some chemicals. The vacutainer shown has a purple top which means it has dipotassium EDTA in it. The EDTA binds calcium, and calcium is needed for clotting. So the blood in a purple top tube doesn't clot and you can test how many red blood cells, white blood cells etc are in the blood as it flows through a machine. Or you can take a drop, spread it thinly across a microscope slide, stain it, and look at it under a microscope. Different tests use different tube top colors. If you're interested, you can look to see what colors they're using.

To get a better handle on how to draw blood, I followed my roommate's friend around for a shift as he was a 'phlebotomist' in Rochester. They gave him all the difficult draws. He was completely nerveless when it came to drawing blood, but the thing I took away from the experience is that as a vampire, you need to take the time to carefully evaluate the person if the normal spot inside the elbow doesn't look promising. The other thing I learned is that some people just have really, really deep veins that you can't see, you can only feel. In case you're curious, you can feel your own. They feel like slightly taut rubber bands under the skin. They feel more resilient than the surrounding tissue.

Sorry to go on ... this is another thing of interest to me. But I hope you got some details you might possibly be interested in noticing.

And you may have noticed, this isn't the only place where he's tried to KEEP PEOPLE FROM DISCUSSING THINGS THEY WANT TO DISCUSS AND EXPRESSING THE OPINIONS THEY WANT TO EXPRESS.

*HE* IS CLEARLY *NOT* HERE TO DISCUSS.

He's an asshole ... and I'll shove his JACKshit right back at him.

SIX's posts are mostly all about *him*. He only pretends to care about "people" but in reality he would like nothing better than to see BRENDA, you, SECOND, JONGSSTRAW, me, and any of the "old" and "weak" people die because he feels we stole the future (Easy Street) from him, and that he will be a survivor and will pick up the pieces as they fall from the deads' hands.

I noticed that he likes to post that "It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine" except ... it really IS the end of the world as we know it, and he DOESN'T feel fine because the new world coming up is going to be hotter, poorer, and more dysfunctional and require way more work for far less payout than the old world. And he may be a survivor, but he sure isn't going to be a winner in the new world, because he doesn't own it.

And I think he knows it because he's lived it: At his age when he should be doing better than when he started out his life was derailed when his awesome job was outsourced to India, and he's been taken down, step by step, thru a series of economic events and bad decisions, to a point where he's living almost a feral life divorced from any source of income except government handouts and gray-market jobs.

So what's to like about THAT???

And instead of blaming the companies that scour the world for the cheapest labor, he's focused on "old people" as the source of the problem.

But the only way that we can get past that terrible part to a better patch is if we work together and stop this black/white, male/female/other, young/old infighting and start focusing on who the REAL enemy is, and that's the people who own the world, the media and the politicians and who are the ones making the big decisions that got us into this mess in the first place.

SIX... any of this ringing any bells? Or am I way off base?

But nobody can keep anybody from posting anything they want to post, unless the poster allows themselves to be derailed by snarky comments from the side (BTW, nothing shuts up CC faster than asking him if he's a paid troll. Just FYI).

Anyway ... back to the garden!

Hi Kiki.

I know about butterfly needles because that is what they have to use on my veins as they are small. I tell the vampires that whatever arm they find a vein in is the one they have to use. I even told one that they had to use a butterfly because a regular needle wouldn't work for me.

Most of the vampires that work in the lab I will be heading to are pretty good and they listen when I talk to them.

But I do admit that I don't like going to the vampires which is why I call them "vampires."

Always be well-hydrated before you go for a blood test. Drink a glass of water - even if it's a fasting blood test, that's OK- at least 30 minutes before you leave your home; having veins collapse bc of dehydration makes any blood draw go worse. Also, dress warmly enough so that you won;t be chilled because that also makes the blood vessels go hide. And, of course, buterfly needles are a must!

I learned that with dear daughter, who used to have to go in for regular blood tests to check her medication levels and who is extremely needle phobic. Experience taught me to swing all possible factors in a favorable direction.

I try to remember to have some water before I leave as yes this is a fasting test. She's checking my blood sugar and cholesterol. She's on the hunt for all kinds of things. She told me for this seizure med that I am that they can now check for blood levels of it. That is new. Couldn't do that before.

Well, we have dandelion fluff over here! Also sow thistle fluff.

*****

It all started with a couple of fluorescent tubes going out in the garage, so hubby ordered a dozen replacements with a brighter, whiter light from Lowes. Such pieces of go se!. Two of them didn't work right out of the box, and most of the rest either took over a minute to turn on fully, or spent the entire time flickering/half-on.

How annoying! So hubby ordered replacement LED tubes that fit right into the old fixtures, the only thing is that you have to remove the ballast and rewire the fixture. fortunately, he knows how to do that. So I was his trusty helper for the first six tubes and dear daughter was his trusty helper for the next six while I went in to make dinner.

The garage looks awesome now! I hadn't realized that the old tubes were so dim ... and getting dimmer. I thought it was just my aging eyes!

There are still six more to go, but we don't have the LED tubes and tomorrow is shopping day anyway, so no garage work tommorrow, just front yard weeding/pruning/thinning and shopping.

Meanwhile, the pain continues. Sigh. It's not my joints,it's my tendons or ligaments or maybe both. The minute any bit of stress is put on any joint ... a thumb, a wrist, an elbow, knee, hip, neck ... whatever ... it hurts. It could be something as small as picking up a dinner plate or handing a pair of wire strippers up to hubby. I'm moving slowly, carefully, and very stiffly.

And I'm not even on Levaquin! But maybe it's my statin. Been on it for almost a year ... that would be the LONGEST I've ever been on one before I started this "hurt all over" problem ... but maybe this one just caught up with me! I'm going to go off it for a week and see if it washes out of my system and if there's any improvement.

Going to (hopefully) be installing the casings on my 4 bedroom windows today. I got the sills I created from scratch as well as the slats that will be behind the casings installed last night. Just that alone looks so much better than they used to and except for a few paint touchups and a lack of closet doors in the 2nd bedroom these rooms look great and are essentially finished.

I got a little side tracked with my brother's stay, 2 weeks of water issues, patching the roof and just generally not prioritizing the correct sequence of things to be done, so in Day 5 of our 80-90 degree weather I still have a brand new A/C unit sitting on the floor collecting dust.

Oh well... Got a cool week coming up with a few nights dipping into the 40's again and what looks to be very little rain. I should have plenty of time to wrap up the windows and get it installed before it hits 80 again and finally keep the humidity out of my house for good.

Then I'll start making a plan for the gutters and the foundation fixes that need being done and hope that the rainiest days of the season are behind us.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Well, you have a lot of work on your plate, SIX! But it sounds like you're making good progress!

I know I've mentioned this in another thread, but ... have you thought of renting a room, or two? You have a large house ... you've posted the pictures, so I know! ... and instead of being a money-pit it could be an income-producer.

Your brother, for example. If he gets benefits and some agency is paying for his rent, or part of his rent, could it pay you instead? (It would probably mean inspections and so forth, and I believe it would mean crossing state lines, so the agency you would be dealing with would be Indiana, not Illinois, so there would be red tape which I know you hate, but might be worth it.)

Or just take on a boarder or two. Here, renting a room with "kitchen and laundry" privileges goes for $600-$800/mo, there it would be less but still a tidy sum in your pocket every month.

I know you have your friend's example of how NOT to rent property, but you'll be right there keeping an eye on things. Just look into eviction procedures .... you may need to resort to that ... and it would mean loss of privacy but could still provide a steady source of income.

Yanno, turn your money-pit into a money-maker, at least for a time.

The reason why I bring this up is because real estate values are predicted to drop. By the time you're ready to sell, you may not get the price that you're hoping for/counting on. And if things keep going as they're going, that backyard might come in handy for raising some chickens and growing some veggies.

Just a thought.

Yup. :( and :)

I'll post some pictures when everything is done with the furniture in place and all the bedding washed from after my brother's stay. It's looking amazing now.

The windows are turning out better than I ever could have hoped. I saved a lot of casings because I thought I'd need to use one for each side as well as the top and bottom, but it turned out that if I was accurate on my first cut to within 1/8th of an inch I could just barely get away with only using 2 casings per window. Good thing too, since I forgot to paint 8 more casings with everything going on and I thought that was going to set me back a day or two.

I still had to paint the sides of the pieces going under the shelves, so they may or may not make it up before I go to sleep tonight. Then tomorrow I'll caulk the seams and spackle brad nail holes, and when the caulk dries I'll sand the spackle, give everything a final coat of paint and finally get that A/C in the window.

I might consider it when I shore everything up and have legit rooms and the possibility of any real privacy. That's not really an option yet.

Except for my other brother, every roommate scenario I've ever had ended up in disaster... And those were friends. Not really keen on the idea of letting strangers come in and ruin all the work I've done.

I'd be much more open to my brother coming here, but I don't think he'd be up for it. I'm sure he'd like being closer to everyone, but I'd have to charge him more for rent than he's paying right now in the section 8 housing out in the middle of nowhere, otherwise it wouldn't be worth sacrificing my privacy. (We get along great for 2 weeks at a time, but we were both ready for a break from each other by the time he left).

He doesn't have an agency paying any rent. He gets his SSDI monthly, and he has to pay his rent every month out of that. If his SSDI goes up, his food stamps goes down and his monthly rent goes up.

Aside from being so far away, he's actually in a really great place, and it barely costs him anything to live there. He's also got a great relationship with the management and maintenance people, and he's been guaranteed that if at any time in the future he were to somehow lose his benefits that they would never kick him out and his rent wouldn't go up.

As for selling? Well... if I don't get to sell my house for as much as I'd like to get, that means that other people aren't going to be able to either. I'd really not be looking to make a ton here, so long as I could have enough to make the move and buy a smaller house with little work necessary to fix. I'm looking to trade down.

And the property taxes here are next to nothing, especially after I successfully cut them in half. Being right over the Illinois border, I doubt very much I'd have a hard time selling this house for a decent price to people who are fleeing Illinois and Crook County's insane taxes but are still looking to live close enough to Chicago to make the commute to their decent paying jobs.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Dang but I woke up with a really sore lower back. I can't stand up straight and can hardly walk - by holding onto things. I always wake up sore, just not this much; and a lot of times it'll work itself out as I move around, but that's not happening today. Today will be a really, really slow day. I hope it doesn't last past the end of the day. If it does, I may have to find my cane and resign myself to getting hardly anything done for the next while.

Windows caulked and holes patched. Should be spot primered at least tomorrow and I might even get to giving them the final paint coat if things go well. Way ahead of schedule to have that A/C in there before the next heat wave. And it's nice and cool in my house tonight with all the windows open and a rare 0% chance of rain all night.

Lawn mowed for the 2nd time this week and will probably need to be mowed again in 3 days. Insane growth with the fertilizer and rain, but my lawn hasn't looked this good in years. Got all the helicopters up too.

Sounds like a great day. And it would have been, had it not started off with me failing my emissions test.

I tried meloxicam and it sort-of worked for a while, until I tried to stand up from sitting. The pain got intense pretty quickly. I think the problem is mechanical - something's out of place - rather than inflammatory. Still, I'll try the heating pad for a few hours tonight.

I did find my cane and it'll be within reach for tomorrow morning, along with my phone, just in case I'm really crippled up.

We will. I have to call her back after June 1st that's when more stuff opens up. We usually go out to lunch and finding a place we both can agree on can be hard.

Thank goodness the heating pad seems to have done the trick for my back! It's still a bit sore and I think I need to be careful how I move, but at least I can get around normally.

Yes, thank goodness indeed! I've had back spasms from time to time, so badI had to ask for help to put on my shoes. I know how debilitating it can be. Be careful with your back. I hope all will be well in a day or two!

It will be. We usually have lunch and a nice long talk and maybe a little shopping or at least looking in the stores.

Well been out for my walk and back in the rain. Suppose to rain tomorrow then be good on Monday. I hope so. Nothing worse than going to the vampires in the rain.

Finished the windows today and they look pro. A/C being put in tomorrow, with two days to spare before 90 degrees.

Also did more work on my service door that I had repaired and primered while my bro was in town. Too much rain and more pressing matters to get to it before today. I'll get the final coat of rustoleum on it tomorrow and have another project down.

Time to start planning my gutters and foundational repairs.

You've been busy! Sounds like a lot of progress, and given that you're something of a perfectionist, I imagine that every project that you finish is going to look spectacular.

At the risk of sounding nosy ... what kind of AC is going in? A room A/C? If so,I imagine that it would be in a bedroom, which would allow you to get a good night's sleep?

First off, everything DOESN'T hurt anymore. It may have been (yet another) bad reaction to (yet another) statin. Those are the devil's drug. I may go back on it for a week to see if it rears its ugly head but ... I dunno. I felt so bad I wouldn't want to go thru THAT again.

So, the veggie garden is in, and has been at least lightly mulched and is growing super well. The avocadoes got nailed by mites this year, but I spread the predatory mites Thursday and all I can do at this point is cross my fingers and hope hthat it works. The front yard is in maintenance mode... I want it to look better, but that would need a whole re-design which I'm too busy for, so the best I can do is make it look at least somewhat cared for.

We are amking progress on turning the garage into a workshop. We replaced most of the fluorscents with as mnay LEDs as we had. This latest project involves replacing a workbench that was attached to the wall with a better one. But hubby wanted to use brackets, and the wall was so unvevn that it was inpossible to attach the brackets and have them at the same angle. So since hubby had a couple of 16"X8' plywood pieces, he decided to cut off 16"X8' of the wallboard/plaster, exposing the studs, and attach the plywood to the studs so he could attach the brackets to the plywood/studs. Sounded like a big pain, but overall it was a lot less work and a lot less fiddly than trying to fit each bracket to a very uneven wall! One plywood insert done, one more to go.

Have you seen the price of meat lately?? I used to have a "price point": I would not by any meat that was more than $4/lb, trimmed. Chicken was always less than that, ground turkey was OK if on sale, some cuts of pork were very cheap if they were on sale, nd beef was OK if on sale ... but I never bought the more expensive cuts.

I noticed over te last three weeks that there were fewer and fewer sales. When I went shopping on Thursday, there were cuts of meat that I could have bought on sale for $4/lb that were being sold fo $9/lb. Amazing!

Sorry for the typos, I'm going fast. Will clean them up later.

I told my buddy today that if you just saw pics of my 2nd floor you'd be conned into believing I live in a really nice house.

Quote:

It's a window unit. I was going to really splurge and buy a 15000BTU one, but it was too tall for any of my windows. I had to settle for a 12K.

When I bought it, I would have told you that I wasn't doing it for me and that it's just to keep the humidity out of the house, but after working on the 2nd floor for a few days with near 100% humidity and the thermostat showing a peak of 88 degrees, I'm getting too old for this shit.

It was even hot in the basement because of the unchecked humidity.

I'm planning on using it to cool the whole house. I know that it won't, really, but it should do a good job of getting out the humidity and that's what really matters. It says it can pull out 5.2 liters per hour. It also has a setting to just use the dehumidifier without the A/C too.

The other night when it started cooling off I was still working late when it got down to 77 on my thermostat, and it was obvious the humidity was almost gone. I had my shirt off and I actually felt chilly after a few days of the heat. I really don't need to be all that cool as long as the air is dry.

I might buy a supplemental A/C unit next year to that one. We'll see how this one goes. I'll probably just put it in for the season this year, but make it a more permanent thing with a proper mounting bracket and a weatherproofing kit when I put it in next year.

Left the windows open last night as it dipped down into the 40's and it now feels downright frigid after removing my blanket, with the thermostat reading 68. (Correction: 64 right now. I think it must have read 65 and my mind saw 68 from a distance. I don't think I would have mistook 64 for 68 and there's no way that it went down 4 degrees since I wrote that, although since it's still colder outside it could have dropped 1).

The new A/C allows for being set all the way down to 61. It's rated for a 550 to 750 sq ft. space, and reviews on Amazon have stated that it does well with considerably more space.

The upside of the tri-level is that the basement is half submerged in the ground and stays cool (as long as it isn't humid of course). And the two non-basement levels are just barely over 1,000 sq feet.

The downside is the finished attic is no stranger to temps well over 110 degrees. The space up there could be viewed as around 500 more sq/ft, but it's right under the roof and much smaller than any other level of the house in cubic feet.

I think this thing has a good chance of doing the two things I'd like it to do, which is to keep the humidity out and keep the attic and 2nd floor under 80 degrees.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Dog cornered a skunk in the backyard. Weird, because our backyard has block wall all the way around, lowest part is about 4.5 feet) and I didn't think skunks could climb all that well. Apparently they can, the, because it was in our yard last night and gone by morning

I didn't think so either. Sure there aren't any holes going under the wall that it might have dug to get in?

Yeah... you might want to do a perimeter check and see if it got in some other way.

Skunks can climb things like chain link fences, but they can't even climb trees. Unless your block wall is in serious need of repair and made a virtual staircase for it, I doubt very much it climbed it 4.5 feet.

If a skunk falls into a window well it can't even climb out of that, and those are usually ribbed.

A/C installed.

Bonus: It works!

Knowing my luck, I only gave that a 50/50 shot of working out of the box.

Wrapped up the repair and paint job on the garage service door too, and if you weren't looking up close with a magnifying glass you couldn't tell that it wasn't brand new. It's times like these where I'm really glad that I took a ton of before shots and videos, because by the time I'm done with everything there would be no evidence that I did anything at all.

High of 91 on Tuesday, so I won't have to wait long to give the A/C a proper test.

Nice. Don't watch the news though or you'll be convinced that a minority is waiting outside your apartment door waiting to stab you. I wish I could say I was joking, but I've had two people warn me on the phone today that I better lock my doors. Everything is going to be alright.

In the mean time... Mowed my lawn for the 2nd time in 3 days and got it down to a reasonable length again before the hot weather sets in tomorrow. Hopefully the days of mowing my lawn twice a week are over for the year. It hasn't looked this good in years.

Did some work outside to further secure the A/C in the window. I don't think that's going to go anywhere now.

Didn't get around to spraying for bugs and weeds before I lost daylight. I'll have to do that tomorrow before it hits 90 degrees. But at least it should be nice and cool and humidity free when I get back inside.

I also ordered an on board diagnostic tool for the car codes. I'm going to get to the bottom of this. They make aftermarket gizmos to fool the computer that people who use illegal mods for street racing put in their cars. If it turns out it's cheaper and easier to do that, so be it.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Didn't do any yardwork today, but I DID walk the dog since she didn't get to rummage thru the yard looking for lizards while I worked. Just didn't have it in me to go out and do more yardwork. Altho I DID bin up all of the weeds that I pulled/dug up from the front, plus some shrub trimmings. So there was only one greenwaste bin curbed this week, but it was a righteous one!

We put the second plywood insert into the wall, and I finally figured out what the framing was so screwy ... when the former owners added on to the house, they converted the garage from a one-car to a two-car. That's why there were two set of doubled studs and they weren't 16" apart in the middle, but somewhat less.

So I got to take out part of the wallboard/plaster wall (That's how they built this house, with plaster over wallboard) using the angle grinder and reciprocating saw for around the studs, but then I had to go in and make dinner (beef and cheese burritos with green enchilada sauce to flavor the beef, and homemade green salsa - green peppers, onion, garlic, a crapton of cilantro, lime juice and salt- with cucumber salad on the side and strawberries for desert.)

Tomorrw, more yardwork and more garage work
