My experience is a little different. We have some trollish people who believe it is their right to have their dogs leave ginormous piles on the sidewalks, set off illegal fireworks in the entire month preceding the 4th of July, and run around unmasked. And then on top of that we have a whole 'nother set of people who think that rules and regs shouldn't apply to illegals bc "they're just trying to make a living". It's a weird mix; one must tread carefully bc people will get their backs up over anything.

First year in the last 5 that it didn't rain a ton all summer and I'm loving it. Almost forgot how bad it can be when it doesn't stop raining. Fingers crossed when I get the gutters up and fix the known crack in my foundation that days of bailing out my basement are done.

Well, it's been a few days since I've been here. I sent some info to hubby's retirement administrator, got an entirely unsatisfactory answer back, so I had to compile a complete timeline of what money went where and show them their mistake and why we should get reimbursed. I'll be sending that email off in a bit.

Also FINALLY found someone trustworthy to be our daughter's trust protector. We do have a trustee, but, as they say: who watches the watchers? I feel greatly relieved. Now all I have to do is go over the trust (again) and compile all of the revisions I would like to make. There were some provisions in it that I found questionable and learned (online) that they should be stricken. Also, I need to make a strategic flowchart to make sure that all possibilities have been addressed. Did I mention I hate paperwork and legalese?

HAD to go in to get an eye exam: my eyes have changed so much that I absolutely cannot see without my glasses, and not very well with them either.

Meanwhile, we had a some foggy nights a while back, and those silver spots on the zucchini leaves that I thought were some sort of color variegation were powdery mildew, because my gosh, was my zucchini decimated after those humid nights! So I turned to agricultural copper complex (a very pretty blue), cut off the worst-affected leaves, and hope that with regular spraying I can retrieve the new leaves.

One of the watermelons is ready to harvest. I hope I haven't left it on the vine too long! Gardening is definitely learn-by-doing.

I do try to keep it out of here, but c'mon Sigs...

As if that wasn't a very thinly veiled jab at me.

Let's be real.

And she already carried over her "putting you on ignore" childishness into this thread when I made a post directed at you about those window treatments the other day. (Pretty sure you missed that, since you haven't replied to that post).

Good luck on the trust thing...

Now that I've sobered up, my old man is going to be putting me in charge of my brother one day. Not a job I'm going to relish, but just one more reason why I want to eventually sell this place and get down there so I'm not trying to do this from a location 4 hours away from him.

My other brother was going to be put in charge of it all, but he's just about as disorganized and bad with paperwork and numbers as my disabled brother is.

Hopefully I end up getting one of his comics for the trouble. I'm still rather salty that he was given an X-Men #1 for holding on to a chunk of my old man's comics a few years back when I couldn't be trusted with such things. All of those are going to my disabled brother in the will, and my old man has split them up into several different places so all the eggs aren't in one basket.

Maybe it's just my area? There are literally 4 trolls that I've come across on the entire site, and their trolling threads are promptly removed. Pretty much everyone else can have reasonable discussions and even disagree! without getting personal.

Also, did you see my post in the Deadly virus .. thread? The one specifically focused on what are long-term heart problems from COVID-19. To me that was new and troubling information. Until it gets resolved, one definitely does NOT want to catch COVID-19!

We had some hot days in May and by that I mean a weekend. But yeah.

Though all this rain has brought massive amounts of lighting and thunder with it. The lower half of BC is on high fire alert because of it and there are at least 13 wild fires burning in the province. Most of those caused by lighting strikes.

No. Absolutely not. You've called me one.

So to post in here about how nice it is to have a troll-free place where you can panic with other Karens about the virus that is going to pale in comparison to the catastrophic effects of the reaction to the virus is a dig at me. Has nothing to do with how I view myself.

And still doesn't explain why you put your childish "putting you on ignore" right after a post I made specifically addressed to Sigs in here.

You like having the last word. Just like Nilbog. That much is clear. Even if it is just to say that you're putting me on ignore.

Hey Brenda

What I'm reading in the news at this end is that while there are many fires they're small, because BC is still pretty wet from all the rain. But I'm sure your news is far more up to date and detailed than mine.

I have my fingers crossed that even as a bunch, they'll be over with quickly without causing major havoc.

Well, we harvested our very first watermelon, and according to the family it was OK! Good thing, because even tho I picked a small variety (Sugar Baby) I think we're going to be eating that watermelon for the next few days. So just to make a stereotyped dinner, we had (oven) fried chicken and watermelon. And zoodles. Should have had greens with bacon and biscuits on the side.

Anyway, with the veggie garden I've hardly been buying veggies, and my grocery bill has actually gone down. I never expected THAT to happen.

I did manage to salvage the zucchini. There are only a few really horrible leaves left, so I'm going to harvest the zucchini, spray again, and then clip the bad leaves off. I think I got it under control; this is the first pest/disease that I managed to vanquish instead of reaching an uneasy truce.

As I recall, about this time last year (or possibly a little later in the year) BC has 200+ fires all at once. THAT was bad. By comparison 38 fires doesn't sound too terrible.

I guess there will always be a "fire season" in the West. It's like the drought monitor- there will always be a drought somewhere. The only questions are "where, and how bad"?

Sometimes.

No, because the lighting and thunder is bringing the rain only now not enough of it to douse the fires.

Plus we got smoke coming up from Washington State and Montana because of fires burning down there.

Nah, they'd call it "cultural appropriation".

Yanno my family ethnicity is Polish, but I wouldn't get all huffy if perogi and czarnina and krusczyki suddenly became popular and everyone started cooking it, especially if some restaurant made a version almost as good as grandma's and I could buy some! I don't get what this "cultural appropriation" issue is all about. I would feel that if someone adopted an ethnic food, dress, music, or expression, it would be a compliment.

If someone calls their team the "Vikings" or the "Redskins" it's not becaue they're trying to portray their team as a bunch of cowardly weaklings. If someone calls their brand Uncle Ben's or Aunt Jemima's it's not as if they're trying to say their product sucks. I think ppl should lighten up and realize that honest imitation is a sincere form of flattery.

Hey Signy - I've developed some tactics for combating the heat! (around 100F in the house by the end of the day during this beastly heat.)

I open all the operable doors and windows as soon as the evening marine layer starts breezing in. And I close all the windows and doors at 8AM. By then, the house is about as cool as it's going to get. If I keep them open longer, I risk letting hot air in. I'm SO happy I got the 2 security screen doors installation completed last year! It's a HUGE improvement!

And the back half of the house - 2 bedrooms, a hallway, and bathroom - is completely shaded by a large coast live oak that planted itself about 25+ years ago. So I close the hallway door to the rest of the house to keep the heat from the rest of the house out. By the time the back half of the house starts to heat up significantly, the evening breeze is kicking in.

I used to raise the bedroom AC up to 77F during the day. But that meant my mattress took too long to cool down in the eve, and it bothered my sleep. You'd think a 2F difference wouldn't be a problem, but it seems it is. So now I only go up to 75F.

But I may be able to change that back up and save money because - I semi-installed a semi-rigid layer of ventilation mesh just to see. This mesh is supposed to go on boat and marine bunks under mattresses, which are set on solid plywood, to provide under-mattress dry-out ventilation (and prevent mold, which is a significant marine problem, and also in RVs). I put it under the sheets and noticed it's significantly cooler than without. I'll be completing the installation today - cutting it down to size and so on. This layer also adds some support to my current mattress, we'll see if that improves my back at all.

And - I haven't completed this yet though I tried it out on a previous load of laundry - I'm making my own fabric softener. The 'unscented' version works terrifically. This time around I'm going to add lavender essential oil to the 'linen' load softener to see. You'd THINK it wouldn't make a difference, but for some reason I'm exceptionally sensitive to things like sticking sheets and skin-traction, which the softener helps. So I'll see how adding scent goes.

Anyway, here and there, while I don't get whole-house cooling* - yet - I'm improving my sleeping.

* But I have plans for that. It just takes time.

Yeah. I don't get it. I don't get any of it.

Rarely is it anybody from minority cultures that are making a stink. It's the white "educated" college graduates, especially from the last 10 years. Zero sense of humor. First to enforce their "morals" on everybody else.

My grandpa was 100% Polish and we'd have some dishes when we were with his family. I don't think he ever said it, but I got the idea he wasn't too fond of Polish cuisine since we never ate it otherwise. Which was good for me, because I always found Polish food to be about as bland and tasteless as anything I ever ate. No offense, especially if you make it all the time. I mean, maybe you cook it better too. Who's to say?

I learned every Polack joke I know from gramps.

Sat down yesterday and finished watching all 15 seasons of "The Red Green Show". The last season was passable but before was pretty funny.

There's a HUGE fire burning here in SoCal but it's a long ways away, and so far this year, there's only one big one going at a time. I'm not going to stress about it.

I just hope we sneak thru the rest of the fire season (till the rains come, if they come) without too much trouble.

Oh, on the average I'd say Polish food is pretty bland. They're far north enough that things we appreciate - lemons, tomatoes, spices - don't grow there. Real Polish peasant food is potatoes with yogurt and (if you're lucky) butter with dill or parsley, oatmeal, rye bread, fresh noodles, and various forms of cabbage including sauerkraut, mushrooms (fresh or dried) and prunes and sausage once in a while. The best is Polish sausage and rye bread, pierogi (dumplings filled with cheese), czarnina (duck blood soup; sounds gross but really tasty) and krusczyki (a fried noodle dusted with powdered sugar). After she ran away from the farm bc of a cruel stepmother - no joke- and worked as a hod carrier, she was taken in as a maid's apprentice for a wealthy family in Warsaw, and learned all of the fancy cooking, which is what I remember best.

Yeah Signy - imo, Polish food which was mostly peasant food was survival food.

Interestingly, it's not so much in the news here - not in the LATimes or other local radio or TV that I track.

Saw my boss' son and his wife while I was out today. They must have been at the house. Who knows maybe I'll get a call from my boss.

Well, it IS quite a ways away ... and it's still early in the fire season.

Last year when it was bad there were fires either in quick succession or simultaneously that were burning mountain cottage/ resort areas, down into cities along the foothills (that would be me), over in Beverly Hills, in Ventura county to the north ... it was like we were in an inferno with fires popping up even within cities. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_California_wildfires And the year before that was OMG horrible in terms of sheer acreage burned in SoCal. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_California_wildfires

I think people are a little burned-out - so to speak - when it comes to wildland fire disasters. I know I am.

How do you get along with them? I know you've posted about them, but for the life of me I don't remember what.

I think I remember all of that. There were some pretty bad fires in California last year.
