Yeah... That's kind of a human problem in general, but having done quite a bit of contract work for other people in my life and knowing a few mechanics and what they go through, I think when it comes to houses and cars people that are prone to pretend they know more than they actually do are really going to try to assert themselves in this situation. Usually, a pretty good deal of money is on the table regarding these things. And there are plenty of shady mechanics and contractors out there that have put everybody in the position of basically being guilty until proven innocent.

The remedy to that is what I said earlier. I'd just walk away from the job and let him find somebody else who will do the work for him and deal with it. There is always the next job, and most people aren't going to behave like this. I feel for those contractors.

I know it is. I'm sure they are paying quite a bit to have this work done and I know it will be worth it when it is finished.

I feel for the contractors to.

Quote:

This is the first time they have owned a house and so this is the first time he has had to deal with all the repairs and stuff.

Quote:

And now I feel for them too. Owning a house isn't easy. It's not cheap either, especially if you're not going to invest the time and money necessary to figure out that 99% of the problems you can fix on your own without paying somebody else to do it. It's not rocket science.

Like I think I've said here before he's a retired minister so any house they had before they inherited this one was always given to them by the congregation that he was leading. So any major repairs would have been handled by the elders of the church, I guess is the right turn of phrase.

Quote:

The work is continuing but he keeps sticking his nose into what is being done and the workmen don't like it.

Quote:

Yeah... That's just awful. I always tell customers that they'll have to talk to the boss when he gets there. I'm not paid to deal with that. I don't let anybody do that to me anymore. I just quit and find something else if it happens. I'm nobody's doormat, and I certainly won't let somebody who drives around a nice new car talk down like they're somehow better than me because of that fact.

He has been emailing the dispatcher of whoever runs the office. That's why they had to get a mediator so they could straighten out what my boss's husband was talking about and what the contractor was trying to tell him.

Quote:

It's a mess. I just hope it gets done before we get snow IF we get any snow this winter.

Quote:

It's a shame that it's effecting you. Hope you can find things to keep you busy in the mean time. I don't know what your financial situation is or whether or not you're really worried at all about it. Hopefully it's over soon if you are. Good luck.

It doesn't bother me but my husband's boss insists on trying to explain things to me and without my hearing aides I know only pay attention to about half what he says. The only thing that really bothers me is the stuff in the drive that I have to walk around to get to the stairs so I can get into the house. But I'm not working next Friday so I don't have to deal with it.

What have you done today to earn your place in this crowded world? :)

Thanks for the reminder! I got my T-day cards out just in time, and got back a nice email from my neice back east. I'm so glad I sent them out! So I'll be doubly happy to get my Xmas cards out on time. Sure, we can keep in touch by text, phone and email, but cards are so much prettier.

Well, today I took our e-waste to a hazardous waste roundup. Hubby was complaining the other day about the old fluorescent tubes stored in the corner of the breezeway after we replaced them with LEDs, and I looked in my email et voila! A notice of a hazardous waste roundup not too far away! So they went, along with our box of used-up batteries.

Also, opened a bunch of deliveries and found that they had delivered the WRONG Xmas gift, for which we paid an exhorbitant amount for shipping just to get it on time. But I was able to get in touch with the company thru Amazon and they promised to ship us the correct item, no charge, and we get to keep the other one as well.

rounded up some things to either return (defective parts sent) or to send on to others (N95 masks for family and friends), make dinner, and that seemed to be the sum total of the last two days. Seems like a lot of work for not much result.

Tonight is the LAST night of at-home sleep study, where I get to hook myself up to a finger pulse oximeter, a nasal canula (to meaure breathing) and a belt that measures diaphragm movement. I look like some sort of cyborg. But after that I'm free!

This question is just bugging me - that doctor that had both a surgical mask and N95 - which did he wear on the inside?

Oh, sorry ... N95 inside, surgical mask outside. I asked "why" and she said "To keep the N95 cleaner". Obviously will not keep sweat and skin oils off the N95

Well, due to my rather poor ability to visualize I've been thinking about that frontyard design for quite a while now. So long, in fact, it's become something of a roadblock to my other yardwork, which I know exactly what I want. that's because the other yardwork (aside from maintenance) is driven by purely practical considerations ... privacy hedges, production, amount of sunshine, maintenance pathways etc ... but the front yard is more about asthetics.

So I put my foot down and told myself yesterday that I'd decide on a design ... good, bad, or indifferent ... that it wouldn't be perfect but it would at least be DONE, and that's what I did. Dear daughter helped me move some rocks and potted plants around so I could get at least an inkling of what the final result migt look like, and I have a design that's ... probably OK... with a lot of practical considerations built in (A screen to we won't have to look at the ugly McMansions down the street, wide pathways between clusters of plants for ease of maintenance) along with the esthetic considerations that I like (lower plants right next to the pathways, taller plants in the center of the clusters) and discovered I need just a few more plants.

But that's OK. Like I said, good, bad, or indifferent, the plan has been laid out and I can start planting tomorrow.

*****

On a less positive note, we are well into our "rainy season" and except for one rainstorm in November we have not had a drop of rain. The air for the most part has been very dry; we seem to have had running Santa Anas (winds blowing from the desert to the ocean) for weeks now. Bright cloudless skies and dry air that strip moisture from everything. So far, we're three inches behind already, making me glad that I decided to xeriscape. But our winter water-usage is going to be high because I need to make up for the rainfall that isn't happening.

As for myself, I'm still working on things and still working on being done with anything. But I AM breaking it up into tasks and completing those, along with doing the everyday.

In the next few days I'm going to be trying a new recipe, which is fried rice with chicken, but instead of rice I'm going to use riced cauliflower. Now, in the past I've toasted the riced cauliflower so it doesn't release water when it's frozen, and BOY! does it SHRINK! A full roasting pan ends up with a thin layer over the bottom after toasting. Fortunately my calculation indicates I can use a lot - and astounding amount really - and get a whole lot of vegetables into my meal and have very few carbs.

I'm hoping it's as tasty as I imagine.

Signy - so cool!! about you making progress on your front yard!

Hey Brenda - I'm sorry about your rain. For me, when it rains, I just like to cocoon. The rain makes the cocooning even nicer. Anyway, stay inside and cozy and dry as much as possible.

Well, I managed to plant one corner of 1/3 of the front yard that's being renovated. I bought a 5-gallon pot of (sterile) purple fountain grass, but split it into two pots to give them room to expand, and put those pots in the ground. Also planted a 5-gallon potful of California goldenrod, a 3-gallon pot of an aeonium with leaves that are light green, yellow, and pink-striped, and a 3-gallon pot of the most lovely pinkish-lavender chrysanthemum ever. All together, they make a pretty display.

It might be possible for you to make 2 versions, a big heaping batch with cauliflower and a smaller batch with rice. For me, the biggest part will be toasting down all the cauliflower. Once that's done it's a matter of putting diced onion (not all recipes call for diced onion, you could skip it) and small chicken chunks into the skillet till half-done, then frozen peas and carrots till all done, then eggs w/ scrambling, adding some soy sauce, mixing it up, then mixing with the 'rice'. They even sell shelf-stable pre-cooked rice if you didn't want to cook rice for the rice version. Anyway, I need to test it out first.

Can't attempt a coup buddy, when the Establishment already successfully carried out one.

Don't mistake my lack of flipping out about it as silence. I'm just infinately more mature than you and Marcos and Second and Capn' and your cohorts and I'm not going to start going around burning stuff down.

The next four years will be entertaining if Trump can't successfully right what what went wrong and save the Democratic process in America.

Well, we had a big weaather change yesterday: Saw the clouds building up over the mountains, coming in from the north (a little unusual) and now we're not in a Santa Ana regime anymore. Bu still... no rain in the forecast all the way thru Dec 20th. By then, we will be something like 5-6" behind in rainfall, and when you average 14" that's a pretty big deficit to climb out of. I hope north of us is getting SOMEthing. I'm going to check the Sierra snowpack and see how that's going.

Your Vancouver-area weather systems must bleeding over into the USA. I see our extreme NW... basically western Washington state ... is NOT in drought. Also, the Sierras are "only" in extreme drought.

But that Four Corners area ... where Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona meet... is getting clobbered with drought. Again. This must be the fith year in a row. That very dry area tends west of Four Corners. Also west Texas isn't looking too good either.

Here's hoping some of your Canadian weather swoops down across the states, and brings much-needed rain to those areas. That would be a wonderful Christmas gift! I hope Lady Rain is listening.

Dear daughter and I had to blitz the house. Again. She scrubbed the shower (I showed her how to use the drill with a brush) and we dusted and vaccuumed, Not a "spring cleaning" by any means, but we got at least 90%.

I was trying to figure out what caused the house to get SO dusty SO fast! Usually, it doesn't get that bad that quickly! But then I realized ... we had been in Santa Ana condition for (it seems) three weeks: Cold, but dry desert air blowing across the flatlands of LA. Sometimes quite windy, sometimes just breezy, but always drying things out and kicking any exposed dirt into the air. Plus, another Orange County (OC) fire and a bit more ashfall. I hose off the vehicles regularly but they were getting dusty very quickly! Then of top of that, we've had the heat on, and it blows dust off the evaporator coils and out of the plenum, so that doesn't help either.

Anyway, the house is much cleaner now, I feel a lot more comfortable being in it.

*****

Made a double batch of roast veggies for two different meals, and boy, do we love our roast veggies! I use onions, orange sweet potatoes, regular potatoes, B sprouts and zucchini (for dear daughter, since she can't tolerate B sprouts), coat generously with olive oil and sprinkle generously with salt; roast at 400 degrees for 30-35 mintes (start with the onions first so they get a little crispy, add the zucchini and b sprouts halfway thru because they cook faster). It's a wonderful recipe for cold weather because the oven heats up the kitchen, and we like it so much I've learned to make a double or triple batch and serve it for two or three meals.

*****

Going to be busy for a while, now that my heart has stopped stuttering and I've managed to get some control over the aches and pains, so I'll be back to doing the things that I should have been doing all along.

So you may not see me for a while, but I will be reading your posts.

See you in time for Xmas, but just in case I fail to mention: MERRY CHRISTMAS to everyone!

I decided to nail down cream of mushroom soup, once and for all, to try and make mushroom soup as good as grandma used to make. I found a recipe that had over 300 reviews and nearly 5 stars, and made it to see how good could cream of mushroom soup be if I followed the recipe exactly. And, as they said in Jurassic Park, I spared no expense. Spared NO expense! I got the required 2 pounds of mushrooms (actually a bit more, to account for sorting, cleaning and trimming). There were enoki, cremini, button, baby bella, Chantrelle, shitake, boletus, paddy-straw mushrooms, (a lot of the variety came from a variety pack I found), plus I bought a fair bit of oyster mushrooms separately. And I was tasting as I was going, starting with gently browning mushrooms in 4T unsalted butter, Kerrygold to be specific. So far, so good. But when it was all done, I wasn't impressed. It wasn't nearly as mushroom-y as the soup I remember from home. And I think the problem was the onion and garlic the recipe called for. They sort of overwhelmed the mushroom flavor. And then the heavy cream was just too much. It puts a coating on the inside of your mouth that keeps you from tasting much.

So now I know for next time. Next time, I'll just put a small shallot (perhaps) in with the mushrooms, instead of a large onion and cloves of garlic, and instead of heavy cream I'll either use whole fat milk, or, if I want it to be richer, half-and-half.

Now on to the next part of the trial - seeing if it survives freezing!

Keep me posted on how the mushroom soup experiment goes.

In the past (when I could smell and taste) I had a mushroom soup that was as good as I remember from MY youth. It was a recipe from the Moosewood Inn (??) cookbook. That was from my first (and only) "blind" wine tasting ... it was a potluck meal, everyone brought a part of the menu (soup, salad, entree, second entree, etc) and was told to make it go with cabernet sauvignon, since that was what we were tasing. Anyway, the soup just bowled me over, it was very mushroom-y. I think you might like it.

In the process of hosing off the cars yesterday I realized just how much(!) ash had fallen since our last rainfall a month ago, so I managed to hose off half of the solar panels this evening as my last outdoor "cleanup" job for the day.

Thanks to family help which spared me a lot of literal heavy lifting and gave me a good space of consecutive time, I got some gnarly paperwork ALMOST done yesterday. What I want to do to finish that off - and it's completely optional - is go online and compile all the records.

The mushroom soup experiment - sigh. I just can't get it to come out the way I remember. I think it really needs European dried boletus mushrooms - preferably wild. I've read that cultivated - and especially US cultivated boletes - don't taste the same. I'd believe it. What I end up with is soup that is literally thick with mushrooms but just doesn't have the flavor.

But after Chernobyl, I'm reluctant to buy European wild ones.

Do you have a recipe for your mushroom soup, Signy?

Oh, hey KIKI, I looked thru my cookbooks and I - amazingly- still have the Moosewood book.

I'll post the soupe recipe in the recipe thread when I get a chance. I wasn't the cook on that one, tho, so if they did something special, outside of the recipe, I wouldn't know.

Got a shipwreck on BC's coast in Nootka Sound which is an marine park. The wreck is starting to leak oil and now the Province has to figure out what to do about it. Booms have been placed to keep anymore of the oil from reaching land. An otter was killed and a marine bird soiled. The bird was rescued and is being looked after.

Cameras and such have been sent down and divers to see where the damage in the hull is and try and find out how much oil is left in the ship.

She was a cargo ship and went down in '68, if I remember the year right. Hit a rock ledge all hands got off safely.

First the oil has to come out of the ship, then the Province has two choices 1. Leave her down there to become a reef or 2. Try and raise her and tow her back to dock.

Sad ... but interesting. I hope they can protect the area and its life.

I'm surprised they didn't pump the fuel (usually bunker C) out right away.

Ships make great reefs, if they're properly decontaminated before being sunk, for a variety of reasons

1) ANYTHING stationary in the water helps ANYTHING get more food. Think about the mechanics of ocean-living: in a free-floating environment, food and creature swash back and forth together, staying in the same relative position. For any creature, that means that rather than food swashing past them and being ableto snatch it as it drifts by, they have to actively pursue prey, whether than means diatoms, krill, or fish. if a plant or animal can achor itself on something instead, the waves will bring food to them. So you will see seaweeds and shellfish thriving on coral reefs, oil rigs, and sunken ships.

2) Iron is the limiting nutrient in the ocean, Since ships are usually made of iron, this solves the nutrient barrier.

3) Shelter from predators.

However, it isn't enough to just sink a ship. Not only should you remove fuel from the fuel tanks, you also need to remove lubricant (grease), hydraulic fluid, and lead and cadmium paint as well as anti-fouling paint (usually copper-based), Once that's done, the ship becomes a wonderful artificial reef and a great place to scuba dive.

All that can be done will be. BC is very protective of its coast line.
