And he who is not sufficiently courageous to defend his soul — don’t let him be proud of his ‘progressive’ views, and don’t let him boast that he is an academician or a people’s artist, a distinguished figure or a general. Let him say to himself: I am a part of the herd and a coward. It’s all the same to me as long as I’m fed and kept warm.

The character in this film SIX was totally deranged and he wound up dead at the end of the film. The woman he was "road raging" killed him as he tried to kill her and her son.

Jeez. Like he got pissed off at her on the road and they made a movie about him following her home and going after her family?

Half the people out there probably shouldn't be allowed to drive for sure, but that's a tad extreme.

Basically that was the whole film but it started off with him killing an older couple and setting their house on fire. He followed the female character to a gas station and stole her phone then went and killed her lawyer at a coffee shop. Almost killed a hair dressing client of hers then decided on her son.

Wow, yeah. A little too heavy for me.

At least in Virtuosity he was funny.

Holy crap. Pardon my language. That's horrific.

The smoke is blowing east right now into Alberta. Calgary has had air advisories and I think Edmonton as well. Mind smoke from fires in Alberta is blowing into Saskatchewan and then into Manitoba and parts of Ontario. Then the smoke in Ontario is now reaching New Brunswick.

That's so disheartening. Well, I asked. And I'd appreciate it if you might post any significant updates either good or bad.

I hope Canada gets weather break soon.

Don't worry about the language Kiki. I watch the news an cringe when they hit the tally of fires burning in my province.

As it stands there are about 160 fires burning in Manitoba as of today.

I will try to keep you updated.

There is some and I do mean some actual rain heading for the northern parts of BC. But the fire danger rating for the lower half is at extreme and no rain in the forecast. Though the northern end of Vancouver Island might get some rain.

The house is still cleanish, not due for another dusting/ sweeping/ vacuuming until the end of the month , the bathroom walls/ceiling got their yearly scrubbing with bleach/TSP (mildew issues) and paperwork has been sorted. So back to researching investments, which I had to set aside in favor of yardwork.

I don't envy you your workload. I don't know where you get your energy.

Also, I keep reminding myself you've been retired maybe 2 (+?) years longer than me. So, maybe you've gotten a lot of the kinds of things I'm working on already addressed.

1) We have AC. We've been keeping the daytime living areas at 77 which is what we mostly agree on, but at night we set the bedrooms to 73.

2) Im very careful to decongest and rinse my nose b4 bed. If I do that, then I can sleep well.

3) I have help. At the same time that extra people means extra work, dear daughter does the laundry, the vacuuming, and bringing in the groceries plus anything that needs a strong back and a heave-ho.

4) My back is no longer really limiting me, altho I still have to be careful.

5) Even so, I could - and should- get a LOT more done. In fact, don't expect to see me as much around these parts- I'm trying to limit my goof-off time by a couple of hours and hopefully use that time more productively.

I find the biggest reason for me not starting something is being intimidated by the task- not knowing "how to". And the other reason is not knowing what to start on. Hubby and I were talking about that, and I learned for the first time he had those problems too. And when I do start something quite often I'm being nagged by the thought that I really should be doing any number of other things, like my priorities aren't straight, and it keeps me from putting my full attention on something.

I think that came from years of working in a position of being understaffed with multiple competing priorities, and I got into the habit of constantly juggling and second-guessing myself.

For example, she'd go into a house and see clean clothes piled on a basement couch and say - oh, I can see you're a bee because you're very visual! But in the same house she'd dive into a closet packed from floor to ceiling and say - oh I can see you're a bee because you keep your mess hidden away! To me, all seriously cluttered areas look the same, with closets, shelves, AND spare flat surfaces crammed with stuff. So the style of mess isn't a determining factor to me. And since I don't see why she's making the comments she does, and they seem contradictory, they just come across as confusing. What she does ask that's more instructive to me is - show me an area that works for you.

Or, she'd make random comments like - of all the types of clutter bugs bees have the hardest time letting things go. ... Why is that? It doesn't really follow from her premise. But that's just one example of many with lose ends not really tied together.

So I went online to try to figure it out. And somewhere I ran across the comment she made that she's not really a good explainer of her own system.

To me it seems either she knows it so well that a lot of specifics calculate quickly in her mind that she doesn't externalize or note ;OR; that her ideas are intuitive but not thought out very well.

When you look at Hoarders, any given episode has two sets of people they're bouncing back and forth between (just like Hot Mess), but you're going to see the Psychologist/Psychiatrist and the Junk Expert/Organizational Expert in charge of each of them, giving you four strong personalities along with the hoarder situation. Save for maybe one or two of the regulars on Hoarders, I'd say all of the rest of them are a lot more interesting than the woman doing Hot Mess.
I think Hoarders is about people who are truly extreme. And many people are fascinated by a good train wreck.
Quote:

Maybe I'm being a little unfair to her though. The stupid Zoom Call meeting format just sucks.

Hopefully now that things are opening back up she is able to actually meet with these people in person and maybe bring another expert along with her, or have a co-star that does the other house they're working on.

I saw some of her older shows where she's there in-person, and I thought they were about the same. Your mileage may vary.

For me, what I get is an opportunity to see different types of organization, to try and figure out what appeals to me visually. I already do kind of know what I want from being organized, and that's to not either spend a lot of time going back and forth to get stuff (store it where you used it), and to not spend a whole lot of time either physically putting things away or digging them out, which for me means putting things together in one spot for tasks that I do (for example, prepping food needs a sink, with frig and shelf-storage nearby and a work surface - and that determines the 'where'; plus knives, spoons, bowls, scissors, misc utensils, cutting boards, trash, recycling, and so on, which is all the 'whats' that are nearby). So aside from keeping similar tools together for a common task, I also don't like digging things out of lower cabinets or corner cabinets, or having to look thru a bazillion drawers (or cabinets) for something. Mostly I just want things to be handy.

As another example of how I organize, each of my projects' materials goes into their own bin.

Also, fwiw, I terms of time and space organization, I differentiate between tasks - can complete in a day; and projects - which require generally many different tasks, and more than 1 day to complete; and tools - which get reused over and over, versus supplies - that get used up. I got some of the idea I think from Signy.

Oh. It was a good one. Early-ish Denzel Washington flick, and I believe it was Russel Crowe's first movie.

I'm not ashamed to admit it, seeing Crowe in that flick made me question my own sexuality at a young age. At one point (he is an A.I. Construct that comes to life), when he first sees what he looks like and says "I'm beautiful", I wasn't in any position to disagree.

ETA: Looks like it IS on YouTube... unofficially. I can't confirm that though since I am unable to sign in anymore and you need to sign in to confirm your age. The comment section makes me believe it's the full upload of the movie though.

Well... Only watching the first episode intently, finding my mind constantly wandering during two attempted viewings of the second episode and falling asleep during the third with no real desire to pick it back up, I can't say that I saw enough to have the insight that you have about it.

I will come to her defense and say that it could also be a production/editing issue too, and not entirely her fault. They seem to have really tried to ape off of the Hoarders format, but every single aspect of the show seems to be inferior to Hoarders. Assuming there's a much lower budget for Hot Mess, it stands to reason that the people in charge of editing a coherent 45 minutes aren't very good at their jobs.

But then to come to their defense, if she truly is all over the map with contradictory statements within her own system, the editing team might be perfectly adequate and have zero idea how to follow her logic and force it to make sense. It is possible that the raw footage is 10 times as chaotic.

True, but I think that's more of an initial draw thing though. A LOT of people who watch Hoarders learn things by watching it, and countless people in the comment sections on the episodes they post on YouTube echo a lot of stories like mine, where the show really did motivate them to turn their own lives around.

With the exception of only a few of the regulars on there, the people they have in charge of running the dehoarding operations are not only extremely good at what they do, but they also have pretty magnetic personalities. At least for me, I find myself rooting for them as much as I do the people who are living in the hoard.

I don't think I could still be watching episodes of it to this day if it were just about the train wreck. Sure... everybody can enjoy the occasional car crash compilation on YouTube, but how many people could sit down and watch 45 minutes of that every week? Or even worse binge watch it for hours in a day?

You and I seem to be VERY similar in our organization wants.

I do find that despite the fact I'm very punctual and always on time for obligations (often being there early), my time organization isn't that great though. I almost never properly judge how long a project is going to take before I go into it. My 3 day driveway resurfacing job took 3 weeks. It took 7 months for me to finish the kitchen cabinets and roughly half the kitchen in between, when I thought I'd be done remodeling the entire kitchen by the start of summer.

I just don't think I'm going to really get much out of the show though. You know I don't like to spend money when I don't need to, and it seems as though her go-to solution is buying a lot of pricey junk for organizing things.

If anything, I think her methods probably enables them to keep a lot more than they should.

Just my opinion, but I'd bet that every single space she's a part of would look almost identical to how it looked before she showed up if they start doing "where are they now" recap episodes like they do on Hoarders... Just with a bunch of shelving units and random half-opened totes behind all the new crap that was carried in.

"... I'd bet that every single space she's a part of would look almost identical to how it looked before she showed up if they start doing "where are they now" recap episodes ..." Yeah, perhaps.

But now that I have some time, I'm starting to set up 'systems' of what gets kept and where and how does it get stored, that are easy for me to keep up. So the things that I've organized, just naturally stay organized. But those systems are exquisitely custom made, by me, just for me! So, if I DIDN'T come up with something usable, I'd have only myself and lack of insight and thought to blame! (FWIW when I was working, one of the bugs I had was to assign myself solving built-in problems, so people didn't keep stubbing their toes, figuratively speaking, on the same damn problems over and over.)

It WOULD be interesting to see 6 months/ 1 year/ (5 years) on, to see how well her methods are adapted to many different people, and if they stick with them!

Anyway, I'm glad you got something positive from Hoarders! I'd be nosy and ask what was the specific instance of insight you got, or was it an accumulation of information over time ... but I can imagine that's not something you'd want to reveal in detail.

Today wasn't as beastly hot as yesterday. Yesterday started bright and clear with no early morning breeze, and stayed that way all day. So with the sun beating down right from the start and without letup, things heated up early and quickly. And then the evening sea breeze failed, and it didn't cool down.

Today there were light morning clouds and the cool morning breeze, and it was partly overcast most of the day, and the evening sea breeze is kicking up early and briskly. RELIEF!

I got a lot of the bathroom done, and installed the bathtub bench. I have maybe 2 hours to go on it to be as complete as I can get it. I may install some casual shelving there as well, since there's no linen closet. I need the storage, but I have to think 'what' and 'where' and maybe 'how', like do I want to hang them on the walls. Requires thought.

Like any good habit, I don't think it's going to stick if it doesn't work for you.

Don't be too hard on yourself about it as long as you're trying though. Think of it as a process of evolution. Not just how well you use your space now, but trying to keep a good idea of the amount of time that has gone by without using stuff that you felt you needed to keep and then reevaluating if you really need it or not.

Though it is possible to go overboard throwing things out, it's really not very likely that you would do that. I think we tend to err too far on the side of caution, so only over a period of a year or three or even more can you truly get yourself down to the most bare-bones essentials that you're comfortable with.

Quote:

Yeah. Have you ever seen the Hoarders recap episodes? They don't always turn out well. Some people not only filled the space they cleared out back up, but they've got even more.

Only seeing the first two eps of Hot Mess, I get the feeling that the intended ending of every show is to wrap a neat little bow on everything. PROBLEM SOLVED! Pats on the back all around.

That's not real life though. Especially with households with 4 or 5 people or more. It's easy to do the right thing and make something immaculate in a small amount of time. Especially if you've signed contracts, accepted gifts and have cameras on you while you're doing it. But these people aren't developing any new good habits. They're just throwing away the easy stuff and putting the rest of it in totes and shelving units that somebody else paid for. How long after the show do they just start throwing new crap wherever again? My guess is the very next day. Maybe a week.

Well I think I went into it in pretty good detail a few months to a year or so back, right here in the garden.

It was both an accumulation of information over time, coupled with stuff that other people such as a late aunt had told me about getting rid of things you don't use and really coming to terms and admitting to myself that I had a problem.

And once I started my 2nd dehoarding attempt in the summer of 2019 (the one that stuck, and is still ongoing), it was abundantly clear that I really did have a problem by all of the mouse droppings and urine that were all over the place, under every piece of furniture, lining the baseboard of every room and littering every closet. It made my decisions about throwing a lot of things out very easy because I never was so deep in this problem that I wanted to keep anything that was obviously ruined by that. In fact, I've gone so far the other way now that I have entire rooms with nothing inside of them at all, and the floors of every closet are completely bare. I have mouse traps set up 24/7 and check them regularly. Since I took care of the problem I've only ever caught 3 mice and a spot check everywhere found no mouse droppings other than right at the sight of the trap.

Just because I had a space big enough for a family of 6 all to myself doesn't mean that I have to fill every square inch of it with things.

I think the biggest compliment I recieved wasn't even intended as a compliment. It was when a friend I hadn't hung out with since years before I bought this house stopped by and said "Boy. You sure live the life of a minimalist, don't you?"

If he only knew...

It wasn't just a cluttered house. It was a cluttered mind. A mind that was filled with one thousand and one projects that I was never going to work on because I couldn't even ever bring myself to start on number one.

And until 2 years ago I didn't even have a proper place to work on any of them even if I tried.

As of tonight there are 267 wild fires burning in BC.

By the end of fire season which is about the end of September I think the total is around 1,000 fires. This year alone and we aren't even into August, BC has seen 1,179 wild fires.

You'll have to let me know if you like it.

I saw it in the theaters back in the 90's when it came out, and maybe once or twice since then. It might be 20 years now since I last saw it.

I should watch it again. I bet a lot of the "futuristic" future it was presenting to us back when Prince's 1999 was still relevant are pretty hilariously quaint in 2021.

Do keep that in mind when you're watching it.

It seemed like today was busy with a lot of small things.

Had to freeze the tomato sauce which meant cleaning new jars and lids, reorganizing the freezer. While I was at it, I had to reorganize the frig. In addition to washing/ scrubbing dishes, pots and pans and clearing the counter top.

Did most of the yardwork I told myself I would: binning up the fallen star pine branches and pruning up the low-hanging ones as well as picking up the fallen palm fronds for chopping up and disposal.

Dinner.

Allergy shot.

Dog bath, nail clipping and flea pill

Tomorrow my outdoor work consists of cutting up the palm fronds and drilling drainage holes into three kitty litter buckets that I use to grow plants up before planting. W/o drainage the roots will drown.

After that .... ? There's one more day of yardwork weather, have not decided what to do.

I was going to edge the curbs, but that's a ton of frontage and being on my knees in the 90+ heat with no clouds. I already got sunburned yesterday, which is probably the first time I got a burn in about 15 years.

Think I'm going to shower and cool off for a while before running some errands and hope that I'm not sweating like a pig when I go tot he stores since I got no A/C in the car.

Well it cooled off a little bit now. 83 degrees. But you can't tell if you step foot outside since the 79% humidity hits you like a brick wall.

Looks like 90% and above after 9PM.

We're supposed to have a T-Storm or two around then and through the night. Hopefully they're right. And hopefully the power stays on too.

Cause tomorrow looks to be about the same temps but only 40-45% humiditiy.

I think I'm pretty much done going outside until Monday though. The curb edging can wait until it's more reasonable to do the work.

Got my shopping done too. Picked up a few tools that came in, got a present for a friend, hit the grocery store and got me two more pairs of jeans at the half price Goodwill sale. I love when I luck into a brand new pair of Levis that fits me for only $5.00.

How's 60% humidity for you?

I guess not too bad. If I'm working outdoors I definitely drip sweat.

We had one thing come up that wasn't scheduled: kitchen faucet repair. The thing's been hinky for a while, had to shut it off in a specific spot, but yesterday it got REALLY hard to shut off. Since the faucet comes with a lifetime warranty I got a replacement valve from Delta (it's basically a cartridge) maybe a year ago, but I was finally propelled to fix it today. Works great, glad they sent me the right part, and relieved that it's done.

Got the outdoor stuff done that I had planned, too: cut up the half-dozen palm fronds (at least, as far as loppers and clippers could manage) but I have ONE palm attachment sheath that's about 2 1/2' wide that will need a reciprocating saw. And since hubby doesn't trust me with that, he'll have to finish that one.

Also drilled holes is three of the buckets that I currently have half-drowned plants in. I hope they recover. Even managed to pull up some wayward grass, but that's about as much bending down as I can manage for one day. Making dinner (Korean-style turkey with shirataki noodles, spinach and red peppers) is a quick fix and almost a relief.

Had to play bock daddy again and clean out the sewers. We got hit... HARD.

Apparently Sycamore trees REALLY shed their bark every once in a while, according to my neighbor. That year is now. After my lawn looked immaculate this afternoon, I had about a billion small to very large pieces of Sycamore bark all over my lawn.

That stuff kills grass. Quick.

I blew it all into the street and was going to just put it up against the ditch, but one of the two neighbors who have the offending trees came out to clean it up off his own lawn and told me if I just blew it to his curb he'd throw it all out. That was nice, because when the bark is flat it doesn't want to let the air under it to blow, and I'd probably have been out there twice as long putting it all at the ditch.

2 more hours of outside work there. And all that rain didn't help at all with the humidity either. At least the clouds were blocking the sun out, but today is one of those rare days where I need to take a 2nd shower.

Gross.

262 fires burning in BC today.

Mexican fire fighters have arrived to add to the boots already on the ground fighting fires.

There are also 150 fires burning in Saskatchewan
160 in Manitoba and 150 in the North eastern part of Ontario.

BC even has loggers helping out, operating the heavy machinery needed to fight wild fires.

Still no rain in the forecast and my corner of BC has now gone 39 days without rain.

I usually save my yardwork for after 3PM, unless I have a really big project like turning over the veggie garden in prep for planting. But even when I work during the hot hours, even tho I dtop sweat my shirt doesn't get soaked. Must be bc lower humidty and a breeze.

Poor hubby, tho. He's working in an enclosed garage which, at this point, doesn't have any windows to open, and the doors are blocked with wood so he can't open those either. It's like a sweatbox in there. Five minutes just keeping him company and I'M dripping sweat! I've learned not to go in there with clothes I want to keep clean. Many times he's come in with his shorts and Tshirt soaked all the way thru.

Trust me. You'd notice it if they were shedding on your lawn.

I'd been getting a little and sucking them up every time I mowed the last month, but this was crazy. This bark was from all the limbs, but my neighbor says that the entire trunk will shed too and the tree will basically be white for a while when that happens.

He and I cleaned up the entire last third of the block before the sun went down. I said "storm? what storm?"

I don't usually have any plan in mind for outdoor work except not to do any at all if it's over 100 degrees. I don't mind sweating.

But I didn't sleep well at all the night before and already had a sunburn from the day before (hand lotion keeps your skin from shedding... who knew?).

I just wanted to get my yard work done and take a shower so I could run my errands and call it a day. I actually didn't sweat that much in my non-A/C ride between stores. But then that happened and I had to take a 2nd shower.

Why are the doors blocked with wood? Doesn't want to advertise what he's got in there? I don't block off my doors, but I won't open the garage more than a crack when I'm working in there just for some minimal air-flow myself, so I can sympathize.

One of these days I'd love to have a moderate amount of climate control in my garage.

Some are people started. And some are started by nature. There has been a lot of dry lighting up in the Interior over the last month. Lighting + dry conditions = fires.

There campfire bans all over the province. Camp grounds being closed.

No, luckily but still lots of dry grass around my city and others. Drivers being told to make sure nothing is dragging on the road, so sparks don't fly into dry brush by the side of the road.

Also the same dry conditions are applied to the rest of western Canada.

There are also 85 wild fires burning in the Western US.

Got the curbs edged. What a chore. Too much frontage...

Just going to mostly be cleaning up stuff today and minor re-org.

One thing I want to get done and finally get it crossed off my mile long to-do list is putting the 2nd coat of grout on the two tiles I replaced in the kitchen probably months ago. You don't have to do this with legit grout, but the grout/mortar mix I bought instead of buying two expensive bags of stuff you have to mix yourself seems to be really water-heavy and after it dried there was some spots that needed it. Not unexpected since the instructions call for two coats.

Just one of those smallish things that I've been neglecting with all the larger stuff needing to be done.

Didn't do as much yardwork as I had planned, wound up doing a few other things instead. Had to fix a Rainbird sprinkler head for the back lawn. I thought it was busted but by comparison to a working one I realized it was just a loose spring.

So fixed that, helped hubby cut up the palm sheath and star pine branch that were too big for the loppers. Hand-watered the areas that aren't reached by the sprinklers, so property got it's once-a-month watering. (Most areas get more, but some plants -like the oak- need to stay dry or they will die.) Helped cut down a dying ceanothus. Damn, but they're short-lived! So this coming week, if I want to do some light yardwork I can cut up the branches for binning. Did a bit of weeding in the back, altho had planned to weed more in the front. I guess the front yard weeding will be on a catch as catch can basis this week. Given the upcoming weather I don't intend to do much outdoors.

The front yard is coming into shape bc the plants that I planted earlier this year are growing up. The plum chrysanthemum, goldenrod, purple fountaingrass and aeonium are coming along nicely and look good together, and the Catalina Island cherries that I planted on the property line have a nice presence; one is 10' tall already. Pruning up the star pine really helped open up that area.

I woke up early this AM (I always wake up at stupid o'clock, but go back to bed) and what did I see??

RAIN!!!

Well, drizzle actually. Just barely enuf to break thru the tree canopies and wet the sidewalks ... not enough to run in the street gutters, but still!
Unexpected, unpredicted RAIN! In late July!

I wouldn't have expected it. Yesterday started out with quite a bit of stratus cloud cover and cooler temps (low 80s), and wound up even cooler with less cloud cover and a bit of a breeze, so I thought ... well, there must have been a mild cool front passing thru, the fun is done and now we're on the backside and can expect a warming back up to what it was before. Rain was the last thing on my mind.

Well, it tells me I picked the right day to water. One thing about CA natives ... COOL and damp, they can do. Hot and DRY, they can do. But they don't like water when the soil temperature is above 80, so I pick the coolest day of the week for the once-a-month watering, and water at night. Clearly, this was the coolest day of the MONTH, and the water came naturally, adding to whatever I had irrigated and driving moisture even further down into the soil. Plus, it washed dust off all of the leaves.

Happy plants!

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Hey KIKI, HEADS UP!

FLASH FLOOD WATCH for the San Gabriel/San Bernadino mountains and SG valley!

I looked at the radar: this storm is coming up from the Southeast. Prolly "monsoonal" moisture from Mexico. Raining in Nevada too.

*****

Climatologists have predicted that the SW will be 25% drier than now, due to climate change but that most places in the USA will get wetter. Makes sense: warmer air means more moisture lofted, which has to come down somewhere. But a simpler projection which says that climate zones will shift towards the poles from the equator could mean that our "Mediterranean" climate shifts north, to San Fran, and we get the equatorial tropical zone in the summer. If so, that would be interesting.

And then, there's the observation that the jet streams are looping more extremely and precessing a LOT more slowly than before, taking weeks/months to transit the USA when it used to take a week.

It's always fun to watch the weather!

World's Food Supplies In Jeopardy Amid Climate Disasters
Monday, Jul 26, 2021 - 04:15 AM

Devastating floods in Germany, China, Turkey, and India. Scorching hot weather in the Western U.S. and Canada. Worst frost in two decades across Brazil. These recent weather phenomena are rapidly intensifying and threaten further food inflation already at decade highs...

"All of these events are touched by jet streams, strong and narrow bands of westerly winds blowing above the Earth's surface. The currents are generated when cold air from the poles clashes against hot air from the tropics, creating storms and other phenomena such as rain and drought," Bloomberg said.

Happy me.
