Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Mayors of towns like Osoyoos and towns in wine country are asking tourists not to come or those already there to leave as areas are being evacuated because of the fires. They areas need the hotels for evacuees and firefighters. The smoke is blowing east right now into Alberta. Calgary has had air advisories and I think Edmonton as well. Mind smoke from fires in Alberta is blowing into Saskatchewan and then into Manitoba and parts of Ontario. Then the smoke in Ontario is now reaching New Brunswick.

Quote:Originally posted by 6IXSTRINGJACK: Yeah... I just can't get into that Hot Mess House show. I watched two full episodes and really wanted to like it. I don't think the lady running it is a strong enough presence to be the singular show runner.
Quote:When you look at Hoarders, any given episode has two sets of people they're bouncing back and forth between (just like Hot Mess), but you're going to see the Psychologist/Psychiatrist and the Junk Expert/Organizational Expert in charge of each of them, giving you four strong personalities along with the hoarder situation. Save for maybe one or two of the regulars on Hoarders, I'd say all of the rest of them are a lot more interesting than the woman doing Hot Mess.
Quote:Maybe I'm being a little unfair to her though. The stupid Zoom Call meeting format just sucks. Hopefully now that things are opening back up she is able to actually meet with these people in person and maybe bring another expert along with her, or have a co-star that does the other house they're working on.

Quote:Originally posted by 1KIKI: I tried to crystallize her ideas from the show, and I just couldn't. For example, she'd go into a house and see clean clothes piled on a basement couch and say - oh, I can see you're a bee because you're very visual! But in the same house she'd dive into a closet packed from floor to ceiling and say - oh I can see you're a bee because you keep your mess hidden away! To me, all seriously cluttered areas look the same, with closets, shelves, AND spare flat surfaces crammed with stuff. So the style of mess isn't a determining factor to me. And since I don't see why she's making the comments she does, and they seem contradictory, they just come across as confusing. What she does ask that's more instructive to me is - show me an area that works for you. Or, she'd make random comments like - of all the types of clutter bugs bees have the hardest time letting things go. ... Why is that? It doesn't really follow from her premise. But that's just one example of many with lose ends not really tied together. So I went online to try to figure it out. And somewhere I ran across the comment she made that she's not really a good explainer of her own system. To me it seems either she knows it so well that a lot of specifics calculate quickly in her mind that she doesn't externalize or note ;OR; that her ideas are intuitive but not thought out very well.
Quote:I think Hoarders is about people who are truly extreme. And many people are fascinated by a good train wreck.
Quote: I saw some of her older shows where she's there in-person, and I thought they were about the same. Your mileage may vary. For me, what I get is an opportunity to see different types of organization, to try and figure out what appeals to me visually. I already do kind of know what I want from being organized, and that's to not either spend a lot of time going back and forth to get stuff (store it where you used it), and to not spend a whole lot of time either physically putting things away or digging them out, which for me means putting things together in one spot for tasks that I do (for example, prepping food needs a sink, with frig and shelf-storage nearby and a work surface - and that determines the 'where'; plus knives, spoons, bowls, scissors, misc utensils, cutting boards, trash, recycling, and so on, which is all the 'whats' that are nearby). So aside from keeping similar tools together for a common task, I also don't like digging things out of lower cabinets or corner cabinets, or having to look thru a bazillion drawers (or cabinets) for something. Mostly I just want things to be handy. As another example of how I organize, each of my projects' materials goes into their own bin. Also, fwiw, I terms of time and space organization, I differentiate between tasks - can complete in a day; and projects - which require generally many different tasks, and more than 1 day to complete; and tools - which get reused over and over, versus supplies - that get used up. I got some of the idea I think from Signy.

I'd bet that every single space she's a part of would look almost identical to how it looked before she showed up if they start doing "where are they now" recap episodes ..." Yeah, perhaps. But now that I have some time, I'm starting to set up 'systems' of what gets kept and where and how does it get stored, that are easy for me to keep up. So the things that I've organized, just naturally stay organized. But those systems are exquisitely custom made, by me, just for me! So, if I DIDN'T come up with something usable, I'd have only myself and lack of insight and thought to blame!
Quote:It WOULD be interesting to see 6 months/ 1 year/ (5 years) on, to see how well her methods are adapted to many different people, and if they stick with them.
Quote:Anyway, I'm glad you got something positive from Hoarders! I'd be nosy and ask what was the specific instance of insight you got, or was it an accumulation of information over time ... but I can imagine that's not something you'd want to reveal in detail.

Early-ish Denzel Washington flick, and I believe it was Russel Crowe's first movie. I'm not ashamed to admit it, seeing Crowe in that flick made me question my own sexuality at a young age. At one point (he is an A.I. Construct that comes to life), when he first sees what he looks like and says "I'm beautiful", I wasn't in any position to disagree. Quote: That year is now. After my lawn looked immaculate this afternoon, I had about a billion small to very large pieces of Sycamore bark all over my lawn. That stuff kills grass. Quick. I blew it all into the street and was going to just put it up against the ditch, but one of the two neighbors who have the offending trees came out to clean it up off his own lawn and told me if I just blew it to his curb he'd throw it all out. That was nice, because when the bark is flat it doesn't want to let the air under it to blow, and I'd probably have been out there twice as long putting it all at the ditch. 2 more hours of outside work there. And all that rain didn't help at all with the humidity either. At least the clouds were blocking the sun out, but today is one of those rare days where I need to take a 2nd shower. Gross.

Quote: World's Food Supplies In Jeopardy Amid Climate Disasters Monday, Jul 26, 2021 - 04:15 AM Devastating floods in Germany, China, Turkey, and India. Scorching hot weather in the Western U.S. and Canada. Worst frost in two decades across Brazil. These recent weather phenomena are rapidly intensifying and threaten further food inflation already at decade highs... "All of these events are touched by jet streams, strong and narrow bands of westerly winds blowing above the Earth's surface. The currents are generated when cold air from the poles clashes against hot air from the tropics, creating storms and other phenomena such as rain and drought," Bloomberg said.

Yesterday started out with quite a bit of stratus cloud cover and cooler temps (low 80s), and wound up even cooler with less cloud cover and a bit of a breeze, so I thought ... well, there must have been a mild cool front passing thru, the fun is done and now we're on the backside and can expect a warming back up to what it was before. Rain was the last thing on my mind. Well, it tells me I picked the right day to water. One thing about CA natives ... COOL and damp, they can do. Hot and DRY, they can do. But they don't like water when the soil temperature is above 80, so I pick the coolest day of the week for the once-a-month watering, and water at night. Clearly, this was the coolest day of the MONTH, and the water came naturally, adding to whatever I had irrigated and driving moisture even further down into the soil. Plus, it washed dust off all of the leaves. Happy plants! Happy me. ----------- Pity would be no more, If we did not MAKE men poor - William Blake THUGR posts about Putin so much, he must be in love.
