Well we had the house heat-treated today. We spent the time away at a dog-friendly coastal park, and the weather there was quite nice. But taking care of puppy-wuppy is like taking care of a 2-year old. first she was scared, and had a lot of nervous energy that she had to walk off. Then she was interested, and had a lotof nervous energy to walk off. Fortunately she settled down after that and we all napped in the van, windows open to catch the ocean breezes, in the shade of ginormous trees.

The upside to this heat treatment is that it only takes a day. The downside is that when you come home its 100F+ in the house and everything ... the walls, the floor, the countertops and furniture ... are all radiating heat. So we've had the windows open AND the A/C on - trust me, the air outdoors has been a consistent 10-15F cooler than inside.

Finally heading to temps we can sleep with, with a cool shower and a fan blowing on us. I sure hope the little buggers were killed.

Now, we can go back to normal.

I too completely don't understand real-life mahjong. I think it must be an interesting story how you learned that. And what I imagine is you playing with a bunch of Asian ladies. Some of the Asians is used to work with - mostly Chinese - had moms who were mahjong fiends, kind of like how some people are bingo fiends elsewhere.

No, playing on the computer and playing with people are totally different. And yes playing with the real tiles and actual people is more complicated especially when it comes to scoring and setting the game pieces up and deciding who goes first.

Since we've been back, we've gotten mixed up a few times for sure.

I started playing on the computer but when a friend's mom got me a membership to my local senior's centre after I turned 50, I decided to see if they had anything I wanted to do. Mahjong seemed like the right fit and the lady that taught me how to play with the tiles is from the Philipines origonally. Actually most of the group I play with are white. There are a couple of Chinese people, one is an older gentleman and another is a lady. That is basically it. We sometimes have lunch together for birthdays and such.

Once again it's beastly hot here - well over 100F at my house, ~100F at the nearest local Wunderground station - so my outdoor work is on 'hold' for the next while.

So now I'm moving on to the other indoor things I wasn't doing while I was focused on outdoor work.

Two of the things all this outdoor work has given me - calluses on my hands, and a ganglion cyst in the palm of my left hand.

Signy, just fyi I did get a metric crap ton of the corn gluten meal you recommended. I'm not QUITE ready for it - I need to complete weeding, then amend, and rototill and level the dirt, plus dig out and place a border around the paths - but it was going REALLY quickly on Amazon (and they seriously jacked up the prices since I first looked at it - double what it used to be).

Anyway, I'll be using it in my work!

Got the ceiling cut in and painted, and hit the kitchen again to match with the different brand of ceiling paint as well. I was going to do two coats, but it looks perfect with only one over that primer coat, so I'm not just going to waste time and paint with that.

Hit all the windows again and now they finally look white. I also cut in along the baseboard and painted the tops of them since I don't want to be dealing with that after I start putting paint on the walls since it's much easier to cut in a wall than it is baseboard with this profile.

Prolly call it early tonight. I wanted to start cutting in the non-accent color on the three walls today, but it's already getting dark out. :(

It was a great deal on the paint after the rebate for sure, but man... Even with a really thick nap lambs wool roller sleeve the coverage wasn't that great. At first I didn't think I cared much for the color when I woke up to the sunlight, but upon inspecting the wall I can tell that it's just faded out because of the white still showing through from the primer.

I've got enough paint for 3 coats if that's necessary, but I really hope I don't have to paint the walls 3 times. I've never actually used a cheaper paint before, and this is the first time that the roller coat didn't fully cover. I always do two coats regardless since even with paints claiming 1 coat coverage you're almost always going to have to cut in twice, but really disappointed with the coverage of the Pittsburgh Ultra paint. I'm glad I'll be doing the 2nd coat today with all the sunlight coming in.

Yanno SIX, when we were out during the home heat treatment I was reading a book on blade sharpening (The Perfect Edge by Ron Hock) and one of the points that ron makes is that some people (not him) find sharpening kind of zen. It's just "their thing". (He likes lawnmowing.) He thinks that there's a an activity out there for everyone that is zen for them.

When I read about you painting .... especially cutting in with a brush ... I envy your hand-eye coordination, and I get the feeling that it's kind of zen for you. Is it?

Yanno SIX, when we were out during the home heat treatment I was reading a book on blade sharpening (The Perfect Edge by Ron Hock) and one of the points that Ron makes is that some people (not him) find sharpening kind of zen. They doit because they like to, not just because they have to. They find it soothing and rewarding. It's just "their thing". (He likes lawnmowing.) He thinks that there's an activity out there for everyone that is zen for them.

Hubby and daughter brought most of the stuff in yesterday. Today I decided to re-pot about 14 coffee plants (in four pots), an African violet, and a dracena marginata (??) that had become seriously pot-bound before bringing them inside. We also brought the remaining boxes indoors.

It was HOT ooutdoors. Just repotting was sweaty work!

I noticed that my orchid and a few of my coffee trees had gotten partially scorched during treatment. I'm sure I can recover the coffee plants, not so sure about the orchid: it was already struggling and I was trying to learn more about orchid-growing and revive it. It was a gift lo these many years ago. But if it fails, I think I'll buy a few more, since I already have a couple of extra orchid pots and orchid bark bc they're just so pretty.

Hot, hot, hot here, too. I've put my outdoor work on hold because of that.

I really need to get the 2 different mosquito repellents - one based on picaridin for my skin, the other based on lemon eucalyptus for my clothes. I'm getting relentlessly bitten.

There are literal swarms of the 2 different small Aedes (imported) mosquitoes - the Asian tiger and Egyptian, both of which can carry really nasty diseases like Zika. I've read that the breeding area is anywhere within about 300 feet. They lay their eggs in even very small bodies of water like bottlecaps, that need some kind of organic matter (like algae) for the larvae to eat. For sure it's(they're) not in my yard, I have zero areas that catch and hold water. Aside from that, with both species, the eggs - once laid - can survive being dried out for months or years depending on what you read. And then they revive like a zombie from the grave with the addition of water. After turning into adult mosquitoes, they hide in shady vegetation where it's moist and protected from the sun - which is exactly where I'm working now.

As I've read and noticed, these are 'ankle biters' that bite lower legs, ankles, and feet during the day. Or, if you're working near the ground as I am, hands, wrists, and lower arms. They don't seem to penetrate clothing, but they'll find every available square millimeter of open skin, and bite, and bite, and bite. Their bites on me are tiny, sometimes barely visible, but intensely itchy, all the way from a fresh bite to the last little bit of scab before it falls off. At the moment, I must have at least a couple dozen bites between both hands and wrists.

Then there are the native species. I have no idea which one(s) in particular are in my yard. They generally like larger bodies of water, like unkempt pools, and I know I don't have any breeding areas for them either. These are usually larger than the new imports, roughly twice the size, and are supposedly nighttime biters. However, my experience is that they don't seem to mind biting in the shade during the day. Being larger, these mosquitoes can penetrate up to 2 layers of clothing. The couple dozen bites all over my ankles, arms, and back attest to that.

I'm looking into what to do to kill or get rid of them. As I mentioned, I definitely don't have any past or current breeding area(s) in my yard. But I definitely have shady vegetated areas, where all kinds of mosquitoes seem to love to hang out. So I'm trying to figure out what to do about them, without killing off the good bugs - the pollinators especially.

Yeah. It is. I don't think it's probably as hard as a lot of people would think that it is to do, but there are a few tricks to it and having a good Wooster or Purdy brush with an angle on it is all but required if you like having a nice straight line where the walls meet the ceiling, particularly in the corner of the "cube"... (It isn't actually ever going to be straight because of imperfections in corners, but you can make the illusion that it is).

A good brush is paramount though. It allows you to hold a lot more paint and get it where it needs to go instead of on the floor, up on the ceiling and everywhere else except for where you were trying to go.

Hand/eye coordination was always good. Some from sports, mostly from video games though I'm sure. They're a little shakey now with the amount of coffee I drink these days, but I naturally have some breathing techniques that I use when I'm up on the ladder cutting in the ceiling or cutting in doors and windows. I've gotten quite good at it over the years. Not as fast as my buddy, but you won't find any stray paint on your casings when I'm done.

I can make a lot of things pretty Zen. My old overnight job was Zen as hell when I got everyone to get out of my way and just let me do my thing. I got to my bud's dad's house the other day before he came home and when he was telling me what he wanted me to start on he mentioned I could set up the radio to have some music and I told him the music was already in my head. I don't need a radio when I'm working.

Cut in the 2nd coat and rolled it. Fortunately, 2 coats were enough to cover... but that's only because I'm good at what I do, and I took care to make sure that especially while cutting I got EVERYTHING.

I would not recommend Pittsburgh Ultra paint (other than the SUPER-GLOSS for trim and cabinets) to any DIYer that doesn't have a pretty good deal of experience painting. I probably wouldn't recommend it to anybody who was using it for money jobs either, since you're going to end up having touchups if you're not careful, and the extra time you're going to waste making sure you've given two full coats will probably cost you twice in labor and time what you would have paid for a better paint.

They have two higher priced options out there, and I've heard that Pittsburgh is a good paint. So either they've watered these Ultra buckets down for their killer sale, or you need to pay for a step up version rather than their cheapest option.

Oh... I also picked up a couple of paint holders with handles on them at the dollar store while I was out. Add that to the list of highly recommended goods that you can buy while at the Dollar Tree. I used to clean out paint buckets when I was done with them so I had something to pour a reasonable amount of paint into while cutting in on a ladder so I wouldn't be stuck lugging around a full gallon on a ladder, but it takes a lot of time to clean them out proper and they take up a ton of space on your shelf that would be better used for actual full cans of paint.

Bonus is that they fit inside of each other like cups, so you can have a stack of them on the ready without taking up too much storage real estate.

And at a buck a piece, no need to bother cleaning them out beyond just getting your paint back into the bucket and letting them air dry. You could probably use it 30 times before there was so much crud in there that you could throw it out and move on to the next one.

Glad I repotted a bunch bc they were all seriously pot bound and it bugged the shit out of me every time I looked at them.

Plus I made a little potting bench that made the work go faster, did a bunch of tidying up to clear some space, emergency-watered some of the outdoor plants bc the heat was killing them, did a kitchen cleanup, helped a teensy bit in the garage and made enchiladas for dinner.

KIKI, I have some clobetasol steroid cream that I got for mosquito bites. (I know I told this story b4, but when my allergist asked me what I was most allergic to I said, without hesitation, "mosquitoes". She kinda rolled her pretty Texas eyes until she did the allergy testing.)

Anyway,if you want some I can manage to get you my leftover tube.

Our neighbors must have fixed something bc we're no longer plagued by swarms of mosquitoes.

Unfortunately, Vector Control can only inspect your yard, not the neighbors,so they're not as helpful as o would like.

Yeah... I'll probably have some after I get all the trim up. I'm not as worried about trolls here identifying where I live off the pics since the more I finish to my standards the less likely it is that I want to move, and I've also got a few outside of the house reasons that are making me not want to move anymore too.

I'm certainly never moving back to Illinois now after how they're handling things, but Indiana might not be the right fit for me in the future either. Might end up living in Florida or Texas or somewhere else that respects freedom a bit more than we do up here.

Looks like I may have lost chapter 13 of my book. I really have to go through my files and hope I find it. I do have it all on computer disk but I would need a printer to be able to print it out. I have a printer but it isn't hooked up. *sigh*

Grandma and Aunt stopped by today. The old man is coming around sometime tomorrow.

Decided to mow, but only got the front done before it started raining. That's alright... It's god awful hot again today and the humidity is even worse. I was soaked from head to toe even before it started raining.

It's finally cooling off this week. I'm so glad I have my A/C now.

Me too 6Six but I do have it on USB memory stick, so I am going to the library tomorrow to see if I can get the chapter printed off. Would do it myself but printer is not hooked up. I will go through my files again to make sure I didn't miss file it.

Another rigteous day of work. After taking the dog for her usual walk, I spent a couple of hours cutting down most of the remainder of a bush that has died suddenly. That's the third - and last- ceanothus that cratered. I will never plant them again: they're short-lived finnicky shrubs that are gorgeous in bloom but SOOO not worth the trouble.

Also pulled up the cantaloupe vines and any weeds and grasses that would pull up conveniently. Then spent an hour on the phone with our Canadian friend, gathered up and tightly bagged all of the film recycling to go to Home Depot and sorted thru the recycling in the breezeway with dear daughter she hadn't quite gotten to sorting. So the house, gardens, and breezeway are looking tidier overall.

My shoulder is less painful than before, and so are my arthritic thumbs.

It seems like one thing after another. This time, my shoulder. Previously, my lower back. The time before that, my left foot. If I ever find the magic curefor all of this, I'll be sure to let you know!

I know. The book is on computer disk as well but that is harder to work with now.
