Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

I noticed the very aggressive bee swarm on my tree on Tuesday AM Sep 9, 2021 through the early afternoon (when I quit watching), through an aggressive bee at my birdbath just after the sun went down. The next day, Wednesday, I sat out watched the tree for a couple of hours or so starting at 06:30 sunrise, wanting to see when they showed up (around 07:00) and which direction they were coming from/ going to (SSE). While there were what appeared to be a few bees on the tree, they were acting normally for the most part (with 2 exceptions of a few seconds of severely agitated flight and one bee/ bee contention). The next day, today Thursday, I sat and watched the tree again, for about a half an hour. I saw what appeared to be bees acting very normally - flying slowly and hovering/ moving just an inch or 2 off the flowers, going in a focused way from flower to flower. While they were about the size of honeybees (perhaps just a smidge smaller), with the coloration of honey bees as best I could tell from 25' away, and the behavior of honeybees, their wings, while faceted, were exceptionally, brilliantly reflective. Perhaps they weren't honeybees but native bees, or bee-looking flies.

Anyway, today I didn't dress up in bee-protection layers because the aggressive bees seem to have gone. I did wear my usual anti-mosquito yardwork clothes however. And I surveyed my property for signs of a beehive.

I've had 3 notable experiences with honeybees. One was having a (normal) honeybee swarm on my front-sidewalk chain-link fence, about a foot from the mailbox. It was draped off the top crossbar and interlaced in the chain-link hanging down, about the volume of 3 footballs. The second experience was when one of my crape myrtles trees was harvested by hundreds of (regular) honeybees one day, and the collective humming was SO loud I could hear it inside the house! The most recent was when I had beekeeper rescue and relocate a 40lb (regular) honeybee beehive from my house framing. They got into the framing where one of the clapboards had buckled outward, leaving an open gap at the bottom edge of the board. I kind of thought there was a hive because I was always seeing honeybees here and there. But honeybees are in such decline I didn't do anything about it for a couple of years. I figured they were happy and healthy where they were, they weren't bothering anything, and I'd get to it when I got to it. Yet, that taught me that where there's a honeybee hive you'll ALWAYS see some honeybee activity. There will ALWAYS be at least one honeybee - or 2 or 3 within the next few seconds - hovering around the entrance, or flying to and from, and sometimes many more.

So this AM I looked over my property pretty carefully, mostly looking for 'activity' in an unfocused way. Damn there are a lot of flies around! But no hives that I could see.

Still, before I started working in the section I most need to address, I made an escape pod. My car was in the alley about 25' from where I was going to work, so I closed all the windows and left the driver's door open, just in case. Better to be trapped in a car with a few angry bees than running down the ally with a few hundred after me, especially considering Africanized 'killer' bees will chase targets for up to a quarter of a mile.

Anyway, the end result is, I got to work and I had no bee problem. And I think there will bee no problem in the near future.

I've seen many MANY bee-ish insects with brilliantly shiny wings on the buckwheat.

The ones I saw were yellow-black striped at the head but black- white striped on the abdot. More importantly, they were nipped in at the waist, more like a wasp than a bee or fly.

Haven't bothered to ID them, tho.

A coat of primer and two coats of paint on both doors and the mirror. A coat of primer and one coat of paint on the two door jambs as well as the casings both inside and outside of the closet and pantry.

I finally got the mirror hung up again, and it looks great.

I'll finish painting the jambs/casings tomorrow and maybe wait until Saturday to hang the doors to give the paint a bit of time to cure first.

I saw that too. It was so weird. I'm not used to see a rain cell all by its lonesome.

While I don't know who else was getting rained on, for sure it was at least moi. The only thing is, I kept trying to stay awake to enjoy listening to the rain, but I was so sleepy I couldn't manage.

I'm aiming to get 2 large bins out by Tuesday*, and keep to 2 large bins/ week*. I hardly got anything done yesterday after taking a fair bit of time surveying for any honeybee hives. So I hope today is more productive heat or no heat.

*Trash pickup is on Tuesday, so my trash weeks are Tue-Mon. 2 XL bins is my maximum available bin space for yard waste (one green waste, one trash). And DANG! I forgot that I have an appointment Monday morning. So that's definitely going to cut into my schedule for this week.

Think I might mow the lawn after I do the jambs today. I was going to wait until Saturday, but I've got some other things coming up outside of the house and I probably would be better off doing maintenance and house cleaning right now instead of getting into another project that would take more than a day or two to complete.

The old man is coming by on Saturday. He won't even recognize the place from a few weeks ago.

Signy, you might be interested - as HARD as the rain was pelting down last night, it must not have rained very long. I got maybe 1/16" in my cachepot-raingauge, and the rain didn't even penetrate any significant canopies (oaks, privets, crapes).

I was hoping some of the dust got washed off as well!

I have a question - can rain ever be driven down by some type of downdraft? The rain last night sounded like it was hitting far harder than just from freely falling drops. It was splatting like rain, not pinging like hail. But it was loud enough to be larger hail.

And yes - it seems unusually humid. So far, so good for our fire season down here! A couple of years ago I think it was, we also had an unusually humid early fire season, which kept the fires down for a few months. I remember noticing that. But then late Sep, Oct, and Nov we had really bad Santa Anas, and a bad fire season when the winds kicked in.

Going to do some cleanup around here before I take a shower. I got a lead on an exterior door that's on sale for 2/3rds the normal price that I don't want to slip through my fingers.

Hmmm. Interesting question. Usually the downdrafts occur right before or right behind a cloudburst. But I can imagine that it might happen.

Hung the doors and got my knobs that I bought almost 2 years ago on a fire sale when I bought all the knobs for the 2nd floor installed. Oil rubbed bronze like everything else is going to be when I'm finally done.

Hanging those doors by myself wasn't easy. They were quite a bit more substantial than the ones that were upstairs. Probably original from the 60's.

Tons of cleanup and re-org of the tools. I'm going to have to get used to the fact that I can't be leaning things up on any of the walls on the 1st floor anymore and make sure things go back into the basement or out in the garage when I'm done with them.

I'll do the "chores" tomorrow morning before the old man comes here. I want this place spotless to show off the work.

Ordered enough oil rubbed bronze hinges to do all of my fresh painted doors.

I should have done that a LONG time ago before I hung them all back up. At least all the doors I have on the 2nd floor are lightweight. Maybe I can wrangle my old man into coming back after I get them and we can switch them all out.

The hinges in the entire house are totally mismatched. Some are chrome, some are brass, some are indeterminable... all are rusty and worn. Two doors have 3 hinges while all the rest only have 2. (I'm not going to "fix" that... just remarking on how inconsistent everything was done around here by previous owners).

Who knew you could buy them in bulk for 1/3rd of the price you'd pay for them individually at a DIY store? Better yet, they were on sale.

I knew going into hanging those closet doors up last night that I'd be getting these, but I didn't want that to be an excuse not to have them hung when the old man comes and sees the progress today.

Boy... I needed a deep clean. Not sure how much of that dust was from in between since the last time I did and the work I've been doing, but glad to be getting it done.

Kitchen and living room done. Just need to do the bathroom and then it's time to shower and run some errands before the old man shows up. I might even start pulling stuff apart in the porch if I have time... maybe work on cutting out that last outlet in the kitchen to make room for the final GFCI even the the special order plate won't be in for over a week to cover it.

Thing is when I picked them up at my local library, I thought the disk included the first one but it doesn't. Heck, even I didn't remember the 2nd film but now that I am almost at the end of the 3rd I remember it.

Mostly bad special effects in the second that run from cheap bats flying and dive bombing people. Also bad destruction of vampires.

Danny Trejo was in 2 and 3. Maybe even the first one. I love Danny Trejo.

Yellow eyes on the vampires in both the second and third. Loads of other stuff.

Man... It's been so long since I've seen the first one I can't even remember if Trejo was in it. I want to say he was, but I might be mixing it up with Desperado.

You ever see the sequel to that one? I actually enjoyed it.

Like I said I don't remember if Trejo was in the first Dusk till Dawn movie.

I have a copy of Desperado and love it. I started to watch "Once Upon a Time in Mexico" but I never finished it for some reason. I probably should try watching it again.

For whatever reason the various Bird families showed up in my yard today. I haven't met them before. It's almost like the parents brought their nearly-grown offspring by to show off how many fine children they had successfully raised. The Scrubjay family came by with 2 children, the Towhee family came by with 2 children, and the Mockingbird family came by with 3 children, all in the span of less than half an hour. After stopping off in my yard, they flew on to elsewhere.

Yes there was, in a different place and a long long time ago, in 1799 there was an insurrection in France with General Napoleon Bonapart, there were also Bolseviks who killed the Russian Royal Tsar family

Back from my walk and everything done for today.

Even saw the lady that I work for in the local mall. Asked me if I was back to mah jong and then commented that she didn't have time to hang out in the mall. Implying that was all that I was doing.

Gods, I really can't stand people some times.

Should have asked her if she was too busy binge watching Netflix or something.

But nah. She might be one of those people who are scared to go out now and doesn't want to admit it. You never know how rough people are having it inside their heads right now and their only defense is to say things like that.

I wouldn't take it as a personal insult toward you.

No worries. It was just a mild vent. I am not wasting any time on her. I'm sure her and her husband just got back from another camping trip. They like to do that most of the summer with people from their church.

Anyways whatever with her.

ETA: Should mention that they don't watch tv because there is too much violence in tv shows and such. They might listen to the news on CBC radio every so often. They do watch the odd movie but only if it is of a religious bend.

Lego has a new kit out. It is a baby grand piano and what makes it unique is that you can actually play it.

If you ever want to know what they're watching without having to sit through it, you should check out the Cinema Snob on Youtube. Before he got more mainstream and ad-friendly, most of his early videos were about religious films and old semi-porn releases like Caligula that probably would not ever have been made in the last 10 or 20 years.

It's pretty hilarious watching him break down those Christian films.

I have no interest in much of anything they would watch. Last I knew they were on an American history bend and had just watched the film about Harriet Tubman. And her husband found something to complain about in it. The fact that the film makers included something about her husband in it. I just ignored him.

I've seen Caligula years ago and no it wouldn't fly now. It also wasn't a great film, I was just curious. *L*

I don't watch Christmas movies unless it is something like Lethal Weapon or Die Hard. *L*

Think I've said this before. Me and Christmas aren't exactly friends.
