I probably won't go up there today, but maybe I'll install the 3 boxes I need back there after seeing how far I'd have to build out the studs for the two by the door for adequate space for the door trim, and just tie them together with the pipe.

My friend's dad is going to tell me that what I've done is overkill. I'm sure he would have just wanted to use Romex or flex conduit if I waited for him to come by and do it. But when I do things, I do them the right way, and I already had a bundle of about a dozen 10ft lengths of conduit my step-dad gave me years ago out in my garage, as well as tons of connectors that I've had since the early-2000's when I lived at my grandma's house. All I needed to buy was some junction boxes and deck screws. I just found out yesterday that new Code rules state that you need to use exterior decking screws to affix junction boxes to joists and you can no attach them with nails or drywall screws because of rust. Makes sense... But boy are decking screws expensive in Bidenworld.

I'd do it the right way anyhow, but seeing as how my entire gutted porch is very clearly visible from the street with these huge windows we installed in the fall, I want everything to be perfectly up to code. When this job is finished, my porch will probably be the only electric in the house that actually IS up to code. Who the hell knows what Uncle Bob did behind those walls.

The real test of my skills is going to be using hard pipe to drop the electric from the ceiling fan down through the soffit and into the wall. Fortunately for me, I'm not required by code to make 3 or 4 bends in one continuous pipe and I can use couplers past bends to join them.

It's slow-going work, but that's how it usually is with me.

Heh. Yeah. Woke up this morning with white on the roofs again after we had a 70 degree day like 10 days ago. It will be cold enough to snow until Tuesday morning, but it doesn't look like there is any more in the forecast.

After that MAYBE we get lucky and we're done. You never know. I've seen snow in the middle of May around here, and I've also seen Mays where it was in the high 80's for half the month.



Got more of my conduit and boxes up today. If I do anything the next two days in the shed and the attic, it's going to be in the COLD!

That's what I get for doing nothing on the 70 degree day.

Going to the dentist, ugh! But I "test drove" a new dentist earlier this summer who is a whole lot closer and cheaper than our former dentist, and everyone has now has their exam and cleaning. Our former dentist I think was pushing unnecessary work (crowns, replacement fillings) and I never knew if what she was recommending was truly required or not. The new dentist did something extremely politic: he said something positive to each of us about our teeth.
It was a relief to hear "Your teeth are in great shape!" instead someone tsking worriedly while poking around.

I hope you have better luck next time at mahjong!

I know it doesn't mean much, but at least you gotta remember that everybody has problems they're dealing with, and some of them will never go away either.

Whether or not they actually ever get resolved for you guys, as long as you keep at it you will be able to put some issues behind you permanently and make the ever-present ones more manageable, leaving you with some time to relax and enjoy life and the time to tackle new problems when they pop up instead of letting things pile up until they seem insurmountable.

The less I have to tear apart completely the more bliss that comes with ignorance of what lies beneath.

Except for the ceiling fan/light and some wall outlets with a switch on the wall that is unfinished and easily accessable from the shed (in really stupid places), there was no electric at all in the three season room before. Well... that's not true. There IS a back-porch light outside of the entry door to the kitchen that was original before the porch addition was made many years later, which is controlled by that (REALLY EXPENSIVE) 4-switch flapper box that I installed behind my fridge.

But now I can open the back porch door from the outside and immediately turn on the fan/ceiling with a switch box next to the door. There's room for another switch and I'm going to install a light on the outside that I can control from there too. And I've added two outlets underneath it along that wall. I've already prepped three more outlets along the front wall under the two large windows, but I have yet to tie them into the live circuit.

I'm also considering putting some external outlets on the front and back of the porch as well, since I don't have any on my house and when I have to use a power tool or my power washer outside I either have to leave the front door open or use an outlet from inside my garage to do it.

Today I believe I'm going to be working in the shed to drop the very high outlets down to the proper height and to see what the best way would be to bring in electric from the shed into the front side of the porch. I can't drop it down from the ceiling like I was able to do with the switches and the outlets on the back side (it would be too hard to explain without pictures, but it just can't be done).

But everything I've put in isn't just up to code, but it's up to Crook County IL code, which as far as I'm aware is the most strict in the nation. I even shelled out around $8 to buy some decking screws to affix the junction boxes to the studs since it's no longer in the national code to hammer nails in or use drywall screws to affix them (because they will eventually rust).

I shouldn't have to go back up into the attic for any more electric, which is nice. Although I did notice there was a junction box up there that was just a pass-through for (tight) wiring that isn't used for any outlet. Once I get the porch electric done, I may see if I can get any slack out of those wires and install a light in there with a pull cord on it since it would be nice to have some light up there I don't have to drag up with an extension cord like I have up there now just as some PTSD over-protection to deter any raccoons from trying to nest in there again even though I can't imagine any possible way they'd ever be able to get back inside now. Heck. I'll have plenty of conduit leftover... Maybe I'll put a switch box by the tiny door in the finished house attic to control that light so I could easily turn it on and off in the future without ever needing to get dirty.

If there's one thing I can truly empathize with Brenda, it's Dental issues.



There's nothing I could tell you that will make you not nervous about the apointment, but I can just say from my own experience that it's really not all that bad once you go through with getting things done you need done. And I'm assuming that you get to keep all of your teeth, hopefully for a long time, so you've got a huge incentive.

The last (and hopefully TRULY last) major thing I had done was having 14 teeth pulled in one day. I saved myself about $160 by pulling the loosest on on my own in my bathroom with a pair of pliers and told the Doc I hope he didn't mind I got started without him. After that, and after rejecting the gas because it makes me feel like I'm drunk, it was just a few shots of Novocaine that pinched pretty badly but then 13 teeth were gone in about 13 minutes tops. A few rough nights of trying to eat with my new dentures before they really started healing and I don't even notice it anymore several years later.

Nothing they can do to you in that chair is going to hurt you save for possibly some immediate pain while getting the Novocaine shots, and those probably won't even bother you at all if you're agreeable to the gas first. And since I don't know what your issue is, it might not even be bad enough to warrant any of that.

You've been through a lot of BS in the past and come out the other end alive. Compared to living with that last landlord of yours, the Dentist office is going to be cake.

Jeez. I never had that experience. But I've only ever had two dentists in my life. The first one and his hygenist were fine, but then again I never had any problems with my teeth when I was young so it was really just a regular exam. The hygenist was pretty mean with that floss though, come to think of it.

My new dentist is great and the hygenist is an absolute dream. I won't even schedule an appointment unless it's a day that she's free. Even when I had to reschedule once and wait six more weeks.

She brings on the pain, but it's not her fault. I get a full root scaling and planing instead of a teeth cleaning at my appointments now, and when I had a periodontist do that when this problem first made itself evident, he charged me $1,500 for it. I don't mind the pain though because I know how important this is now and the feeling of having that done is like the feeling you get after a haircut but 100 times as good.


Glad to hear you like your new dentist. Who knows what my situation would be right now if I didn't luck into finding a great office near me.
