I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.
Quote: BRENDA: Just a lazy Sunday around me again. SIX: Me too, Brenda. I was going to work on cleaning my house today, or at least as much as I could get done before my aunt and grandma came over, but with it hitting 90 degrees today and my aunt's A/C out in her car, we agreed to put it off for another weekend. So instead of doing right and getting a jump start on cleaning the house anyway, I've done nothing all day and it's been pretty nice.

It alleged "a systemic, coordinated campaign of sexual violence" - relying chiefly on testimony gathered by Ukraine's appointed top human rights representative. It included a particularly shocking story of 25 teenage girls being gang-raped by Russian troops - nine of which became pregnant. According to the report: Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman, Lyudmyla Denisova said that 25 teenage girls were kept in a basement in Bucha and gang-raped; nine of them are now pregnant. Elderly women spoke on camera about being raped by Russian soldiers. The bodies of children were found naked with their hands tied behind their backs, their genitals mutilated. But one consistent detail in the majority of the stories is that the aforementioned Ukraine human rights ombudsman, Lyudmyla Denisova, is often the central figure feeding Western correspondents the shocking rape stories. For example, she's featured in this April Newsweek piece: Lyudmila Denisova, the Ukrainian Parliament's Commissioner for Human Rights, alleged on Friday that Russian soldiers have raped children during the ongoing invasion of Ukraine. In a Facebook post, Denisova alleged that an 11-year-old boy was raped by Russians in front of his mother who was tied to a chair and forced to watch as it happened in the Ukrainian city of Bucha. Lyudmyla Denisova, Ukrainian government image Many such stories which presented ever-more horrifying details as the war progressed quickly went viral, particularly among pro-Ukraine activists on Twitter and other social media, to the point where prominent pundits would begin casually agreeing amongst themself that Russians simply are "animals". And below is another example among many, which tended to be based on "reports say" for many of the most central, damning claims... But recently, within the last couple of weeks, as investigators began to dig deeper into the allegations, it seems the media stories started to dry up. The geopolitical analysis blog Moon of Alabama details what happened in the following: However, a bunch of eager NGOs in Ukraine, hoping for fresh 'western' money for new 'rape consultation and recovery' projects, tried to find real rape cases. They were disappointed when they found that there was no evidence that any rape had taken place (machine translation): On May 25, a number of media outlets and NGOs published an open appeal to Lyudmila Denisova calling for improved communication on sexual crimes during the war. The signatories insist that Denisova should disclose only information about which there is sufficient evidence, avoid sensationalism and excessive detail in their reports, use correct terminology and take care of the confidentiality and safety of victims. "Sexual crimes during the war are family tragedies, a difficult traumatic topic, not a topic for publications in the spirit of the 'scandalous chronicle.' We need to keep in mind the goal: to draw attention to the facts of crimes," the appeal reads. An entire global activist movement even sprang up which focused on highlighting Russian sexual crimes in Ukraine, based on the premise that Russia's military is using "rape as a tool" as part of its arsenal to spread a campaign of terror... You have a balcony, correct? Do you ever put a chair out on sunny days to enjoy the weather? Or is it not warm enough for that? Here I definitely do NOT go out to enjoy the sun! I get enough walking the dog and doing yardwork. Most times, when it's sunny, it's too hot and I'm looking for a cool spot - usually indoors. Quote:Originally posted by 6IXSTRINGJACK: Got back from Grams and got a ton of stuff done. I got ALMOST all of the stuff out of the basement. I thought for sure I'd get it done before I left, but holy crap there was a lot of mouse activity before they got rid of them. I'm hoping that they didn't get upstairs too. Nothing out in the open is contaminated, but there's still a lot of things to go through in the 1st and 2nd floors. It certainly made deciding what to throw out and what to keep a lot easier. To my happy surprise, my Grandma didn't even seem to have any problem at all with me throwing all of that stuff out either. Especially not after I showed her photographs of the carnage as I was going along and doing it. It looks as though most of the photographs survived, and the small percentage of them that didn't were extremely old-timey ones that I'm pretty sure my Grandma won't even be able to name at this point. I got them all into 4 boxes now by removing all of the old frames and throwing them out with about 40 other bags of junk and all of the furniture and shelving. I made my aunt's and Grandma's day by finding a photo album they made back in 1990 when they took a trip to Niagara falls together. I also found two pictures of my Grandma when she was in her 20's. Cool how you never seen that before but even though she's at least 65 years older you just know. I spent about 4 or 5 hours hosing down and bleaching all of the totes. They'll never be good for food or clothing again, but they'll be perfect in my garage on my new shelving. They didn't want them, so huge bonus for me. I'll probably go back next week to do more. We're going to pass on having them come out by me to see my house this weekend since I was just out there. Gas prices are kind of prohibitive for everyone at the moment and there will be plenty of time for them to see what I've been up to around here. -------------------------------------------------- Me: "Remember Covid?" Back in the day, I remember seeing milk cartons all over the place in the grocery stores so people could get a little extra height to grab things they couldn't reach. I'm sure that's something that OSHA here and whatever the Canadian equivalent took out of the stores because a few people fell off of them and sued the stores or something. :( If I'm not careful, I get employees reprimanding me for climbing up shelving to get stuff that's too high from time to time. I get it. It's their job to do just that. But any time I've done work in retail I've always been climbing shelving to do my job better and getting yelled at by managers for that too. -------------------------------------------------- Me: "Remember Covid?" I saw a few droplets on the back porch closet floor, but nothing screaming out at me on the kitchen countertop or floor, or anywhere else I've been in the 1st floor. 2nd floor is fairly sparse these days compared to back when I lived there and nothing was visible. I'm thinking there was some activity outside of the basement, but hopefully nothing like the horror show I went through the last few days over there. What I had under the stove and the dish washer in my house was concentrated and far worse, but their problem in the basement overall was bigger than the rest of my house was before I took care of it. I'm sure my grandma appreciates having me around more, but I don't think doing that for her means anything to her one way or the other. She's got a pretty small world she lives in these days that pretty much spans her bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchen. Anything I've done so far hasn't disrupted any of that in the least. I'm just thrilled that she seems so easy going about me getting everything out. I wasn't expecting that at all. I was so impressed that I actually showed her the before and after pictures of the work and what she doesn't have in the house anymore and she actually seemed pleased that I was doing it. Back when I lived there I couldn't get her to allow me to throw anything out at all, so my uncle and I just had a system of "don't ask for permission, but be ready to beg for forgiveness." This really is more about helping my aunt out. It's just all become too much for her. She still works full time despite the fact that she could technically retire right now, and to come home to a giant house that is never clean on top of having to take care of my grandma... well... It did ruin her vacation time that she was talking about for the last few months. At least I was able to come over and start cleaning the basement out and get her laundry area bleached down so that wasn't a weekly nightmare for her. And this time while I was cleaning all of those totes I really knocked loose a lot of the sludge in that slop sink and was able to get it about 80% cleaner than when I started, which is actually a lot because that was just downright gross. I like seeing her in good spirits. It's better for both she and my grandma. Quote:That is so cool that you found photographs like that of your grandmother, Jack. Those are very precious. And that photo album too. Yeah. I have some other surprises for her in those boxes too. Once I get around to clearing out the stuff they don't' use anymore from the rest of the house and I can just come over to mostly enjoy their company, I plan on bringing those boxes and totes up one at a time and sitting down with her and seeing if we can't figure out who some of those unmarked photographs are. That's something I wanted to do with her 20 years ago, but life kind of got in the way. Quote:It'll be well worth the wait to have them come and see your place. I'm sure they'll be really proud of what you have done.

It's far too easy to put "something" in that (those) spare room(s) with the idea "I'll get to that later" until it becomes a nightmare. You don't see any messy ship cabins! Everything is selected for size/utility, and everything has to be "stowed".
Quote:It would be better to clear out those extra rooms, like you're doing SIX, and close them off.
Quote:How does your aunt feel about renting out a room? I know it's a hassle screening prospective renters, but it could add to her income and maybe allow her to not work so many hours. I'm sure going thru the process would be a big burden on her, but in the end it ay be helpful. Or possibly having someone there as "live-in" help? I don't know how well your grandma is doing, but- having taken care of two people with some sort of dementia- they can become agitated and prone to wandering and very hard to take care of bc they get themselves into all kinds of trouble with trying to cook or go somewhere. Altho maybe your grandma is declining physically and incapable of that, which in a way is a blessing in disguise. IDK their situation, but I thought I'd toss that our there as an alternative.
Quote:Our older sis is living in our family home, and it's too big for her. She essentially lives on the ground floor, the 2nd story is like a museum of our childhood but it needs to be cleared out. I would LOVE to go over and help! Too bad it's 2700 miles away.
Quote:But then, I really need to start HERE. After getting the front and bak yards in tolerable shape, I should set a good example and clean out my "office". Maybe with that example it will inspire hubby to get rid of HIS junk. Another thing I would love to dois put glass or lexan/acrylic doors on our bookshelves. I've mentioned more than a few times that this is a very dusty neighborhood, and it's a lot easier wiping down a glass-fronted bookcase than it is trying to dust every single blessed item! But what to do about dear daughter's stuff? Her eyes work great, but her mind doesn't process what she sees: SHOW her something and she has a hard time describing it, but blindfold her and put it in her hands and she'll tell you right away what it is. It's like she's "mind blind". Altho electrons are tiny and cheap to store, pictures just don't do it for her; she needs the real physical thing to link to memory. Maybe we just build a lot of storage for her so she can keep her stuff out of the way and where it won't get dusty. OK, so I know what my next project is ... unless we get derailed by another health problem, that is ... my office!
Quote:THANKS for the good example! Now I can say that BRENDA has set such a good example with scheduling and you with cleanup.

What I consider the good stuff always seems to be on the top shelf. Cereal, ice cream. Very annoying. I don't fit in a purse though and you've already got too much to carry around with you. Back in the day, I remember seeing milk cartons all over the place in the grocery stores so people could get a little extra height to grab things they couldn't reach. -------------------------------------------------- Me: "Remember Covid?" Useless Idiots: "What's Covid, durr? Russia, Ukraine, Putin, NATO *drool*. DURRRR!!!!" Back pack and that is true.
Quote:I don't remember anything like that when I was a kid but back then it was easier to find a clerk to get something down for you. Or going farther back. My dad could easily reach stuff for my mum off the high shelves. I have done the climbing up shelves to reach things but that day I didn't feel like it so I got the mop.

Having you as some company around her house, I am sure she appreciates more than she can say. That's the important thing. Treasure this time you have with both your aunt and grandmother. You are very fortunate to have these people. Oh, your aunt is going to so love you for all of this. I'm sure your grandmother will enjoy that. Those old pictures might just kick up some memories and names. Have a pen handy to write on the backs, who, where and a year if possible. They will love it when they see it then.

I don't leave home without my small tool bag these days and I call it my man-purse. Those old pictures might just kick up some memories and names. Have a pen handy to write on the backs, who, where and a year if possible. They will love it when they see it then. Oh... It WAS a problem in the basement. Not as bad as the nastiness under/behind my stove and dishwasher bad, but worse than any of the rest of my house got bad. I'm still not done either. I have a fruit cellar to clear out that is just as bad as the closet was. The upstairs seems good so far, but there are some closets up there filled with junk that I'm worried about. The fact that nobody has ever seen a mouse upstairs makes me feel a little better, but I already know they were at least doing some minor activity in the porch closet. I'm just hoping they got rid of them before they made a big mess upstairs. Unfortunately, after decades of cats owning that house, using your sense of smell outside of the basement isn't helping at all here. That house ALWAYS smells funny, with or without mice. I'm really looking forward to doing that with my Grandma. I hope she can remember at least some of the names. I get the feeling that my aunt doesn't want any of the pictures that weren't of her and her brothers, so I'll probably inherit those old-timey ones and I'd like to know more about them. -------------------------------------------------- Falsus in unum, falsus in omnibus

Quote:Also, in your experience ... do they eventually go away if they don't find food? BC I'm under the impression that there's nothing really edible where you're cleaning. Or do they just come in for the warmth in winter? How old do (did) the mouse evidence look? I guess what I'm really wondering is - do you think this might be an ongoing problem? Or maybe jut an occasional one?

Well, maybe doing more clearing out and airing out might get rid of the cat smell. I hope she can. Sometimes photographs can help. They can take a person back to that time and place. I have old photographs from my dad's side that I know most of the people in them and some have written on them the year and the people. Unfortunately the old photographs I have from my mom's side. Not so much with the writing and years.
