Well, the rain tally is in for May for BC. Horrible number. 92.1mm of rain. At least it will be dry tomorrow and for the first day of June. But dry and a little warmer means the Interior and out into the Valley are heading for thunder storms with possible lighting strikes.

BRENDA: Just a lazy Sunday around me again.

SIX: Me too, Brenda.
I was going to work on cleaning my house today, or at least as much as I could get done before my aunt and grandma came over, but with it hitting 90 degrees today and my aunt's A/C out in her car, we agreed to put it off for another weekend. So instead of doing right and getting a jump start on cleaning the house anyway, I've done nothing all day and it's been pretty nice.

Me OTOH ... trying to take care of a 6-month backlog of chores. Yesterday and today the weather was good for gardening. This week I have three binsful of dried weeds and grasses out at the curb. And the front yard looks noticeably better. The neighbors are happy to see yardwork being done, again. I figured I would take care of the fire hazard stuff first, then switch to planting the veggie garden, then switch back to the front yard and just keep pecking away at it. Once the green weeds are done, I'll do the weeding in back, and once THAT is done I'll start working on moving some dirt around the front, re-grading the front and re-doing the hardscape. And once THAT is done, I'll prolly call chipdrop and have them dump a bunch of (free) chipped-up wood as mulch to keep the weeds down. But that will all happen in-between other things like appointments and cooking/cleaning and all that, so it's not going to happen quickly. At least I have the sequence worked out and it's started.

But tomorrow it's going to be above my 80F threshold (I can't imagine working in 90F weather, SIX! I must be a slacker!) so I'm going to be doing indoor stuff for a couple of days. There are a bunch of things I HAVE to order online - clothing for hubby and sis, dusting (very dusty neighborhood) and general cleanup. Plus, yanno, more appointments!

Then back to outdoor stuff for a few more days. So got super-derailed since November bc it seemed like once I was recovering from chemo I went to surgery and just about the time I was recovering from that I had radiation. They leave just enough time for some recovery before they progress to the next treatment. They have it all pretty well-timed to consume someone's entire life for a while! But all-in-all, I have energy back, so aside from various appointments I should be able to chip away at everything that got dropped for so long.

Whew! One of my "indoor tasks" was going over our primary ballot. You have NO IDEA how many positions there are and hopefuls running for them! Especially since we have "open primaries" that allow everyone to vote for everyone. But I put in my diligent review and feel I made reasonable choices.

And now to order some necessary items for the family.

When I finish that ... sorting the mail.

They trying to sneak in tax increases for "education" on you too?

They'd never dare do that during the general election on a Presidential year.

The hot button issues are...

LA County Sheriff. The previous sheriff b4 the current sheriff left bc of a lot of corruption in the dept. The current sheriff promised reform but didn't deliver. So there are a lot of candidates promising change.

Crime in general.

Wildfires and fire insurance, and health insurance.

Homelessness.

The governor (Newsom) SHOULD be under fire, but isn't bc of solid Dem demographics.

Anyway, this belongs in another thread, so if you want to pursue this we can make another thread.

Yes, I did. But the good stuff is always on the top shelf of the freezer. So, I went and got a mop from another aisle and used the handle to knock a box over and off the shelf. Luckily I managed to catch it. Usually the box winds up on the floor. .

Sometimes I go into the cookware aisle and grab tongs or a spatula, but if it's truly out of reach I find the tallest person available and ask them nicely to get it for me.

Ukraine Fires Own Human Rights Chief For Perpetuating Russian Troop 'Systematic Rape' Stories

For over the past two months, an avalanche of stories have hit Western mainstream press which purported to document instances of mass rape carried out by Russian troops against Ukrainian civilians. One particular story in Time took off, driving outrage and condemnation by Western officials and receiving repeat coverage on CNN and other major US networks.

It alleged "a systemic, coordinated campaign of sexual violence" - relying chiefly on testimony gathered by Ukraine's appointed top human rights representative. It included a particularly shocking story of 25 teenage girls being gang-raped by Russian troops - nine of which became pregnant. According to the report:

Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman, Lyudmyla Denisova said that 25 teenage girls were kept in a basement in Bucha and gang-raped; nine of them are now pregnant. Elderly women spoke on camera about being raped by Russian soldiers. The bodies of children were found naked with their hands tied behind their backs, their genitals mutilated. Those victims included both girls and boys...

Ukrainians are speaking up about rape as a war crime to ensure the world holds Russia accountablehttps://t.co/tEilTSgmbS
— TIME (@TIME) April 24, 2022

As has been the pattern in prior wars, whether in Syria or Libya, the media claims got more and more sensational and over-the-top as the conflict intensified, and as Western powers became more deeply involved, yet with no concrete or definitive proof.

But one consistent detail in the majority of the stories is that the aforementioned Ukraine human rights ombudsman, Lyudmyla Denisova, is often the central figure feeding Western correspondents the shocking rape stories.

For example, she's featured in this April Newsweek piece:

Lyudmila Denisova, the Ukrainian Parliament's Commissioner for Human Rights, alleged on Friday that Russian soldiers have raped children during the ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

In a Facebook post, Denisova alleged that an 11-year-old boy was raped by Russians in front of his mother who was tied to a chair and forced to watch as it happened in the Ukrainian city of Bucha.

Lyudmyla Denisova, Ukrainian government image

Many such stories which presented ever-more horrifying details as the war progressed quickly went viral, particularly among pro-Ukraine activists on Twitter and other social media, to the point where prominent pundits would begin casually agreeing amongst themself that Russians simply are "animals".

And below is another example among many, which tended to be based on "reports say" for many of the most central, damning claims...

But recently, within the last couple of weeks, as investigators began to dig deeper into the allegations, it seems the media stories started to dry up. The geopolitical analysis blog Moon of Alabama details what happened in the following:

However, a bunch of eager NGOs in Ukraine, hoping for fresh 'western' money for new 'rape consultation and recovery' projects, tried to find real rape cases. They were disappointed when they found that there was no evidence that any rape had taken place

(machine translation):
On May 25, a number of media outlets and NGOs published an open appeal to Lyudmila Denisova calling for improved communication on sexual crimes during the war.

The signatories insist that Denisova should disclose only information about which there is sufficient evidence, avoid sensationalism and excessive detail in their reports, use correct terminology and take care of the confidentiality and safety of victims.

"Sexual crimes during the war are family tragedies, a difficult traumatic topic, not a topic for publications in the spirit of the 'scandalous chronicle.' We need to keep in mind the goal: to draw attention to the facts of crimes," the appeal reads.

An entire global activist movement even sprang up which focused on highlighting Russian sexual crimes in Ukraine, based on the premise that Russia's military is using "rape as a tool" as part of its arsenal to spread a campaign of terror...

The woman also shouted 'Don't rape us!' as the security encircled her quickly to take her off the red carpet. The incident again brought to light the Ukraine crisis at #Cannes. https://t.co/Ghs9UCKC7q
— WION (@WIONews) May 21, 2022

And now on Tuesday, Interfax, Politico, The Wall Street Journal, and others are reporting that Lyudmyla Denisova has been fired - precisely for floating and perpetuating fantastical claims of mass rape but without providing evidence...

Ukraine's parliament just fired human rights ombudsman Lyudmila Denisova. MPs claimed her work focusing on the rape of Ukrainians by Russian troops which "couldn't be confirmed with evidence [...] only harmed Ukraine and distracted the global media from Ukraine's real needs."
— Christopher Miller (@ChristopherJM) May 31, 2022

"Ukrainian lawmakers dismissed the country’s ombudsman for human rights, Lyudmyla Denisova, in a no-confidence vote on Tuesday, concluding that she had failed to fulfill obligations including the facilitation of humanitarian corridors and countering the deportation of Ukrainians from occupied territory," The Wall Street Journal reported late in the day.

"Lawmaker Pavlo Frolov said Ms. Denisova was also accused of making insensitive and unverifiable statements about alleged Russian sex crimes and spending too much time in Western Europe during the invasion," the report added.

Frolov said in a Facebook post announcing her dismissal as the country's top human rights investigator:

"The unclear focus of the Ombudsman's media work on the numerous details of ‘sexual crimes committed in an unnatural way’ and ‘rape of children’ in the occupied territories that could not be confirmed by evidence, only harmed Ukraine."

Such accusations of mass rape by the enemy de jour are made in every war (Libya, Syria) . They rarely turn out to be true. https://t.co/bF0NVhQiFl https://t.co/i4rE2LMZMV

I think this needs its own thread. SIG pulls most of her information that she posts here from this blog and stupidly defends it as a reputable source. As she continues to do so I will regenerate this thread to remind all it is a corrupted blog designed to create havoc rather than informing.

Below are the names of those behind zero hedge. Don't miss what I've highlighted in red below. This folks is why comrade troll SIG loves to quote zero hedge.

In addition, Lokey said he faced constant pressure to frame stories in-line with a particular world-view, which he described as “Russia=good. Obama=idiot. Bashar al-Assad=benevolent leader. John Kerry=dunce. Vladmir Putin=greatest leader in the history of statecraft.”

All of this matches SIG's playbook here and Putin's globally; exactly.

The men behind zero hedge

Colin Lokey, a 32-year-old former Seeking Alpha director

Daniel Ivandjiiski, a 37-year-old Bulgarian-born former hedge fund employee who was barred for insider trading in 2008

Tim Backshall, a 45-year-old credit derivatives strategist
Despite its populist tone, Lokey told Bloomberg he recently left Zero Hedge because he didn’t see eye-to-eye with the others when it came to editorial vision.

“Zero Hedge ceased to serve that public service years ago,” Lokey said. “They care what generates page views. Clicks. Money.”

Lokey claims Zero Hedge’s focus on traffic and revenue is hypocritical, but Ivandjiiski sees things differently.

Finally, Zero Hedge addressed the accusations of systematic bias in its content.

“We are certainly ok with being the object of other’s conspiracy theories, in this case completely false ones since we have never been in contact with anyone in Russia, or the US, or any government for that matter,” Zero Hedge says.

The site claims it has never accepted a dime of funding outside of advertising revenue and that Lokey was never pressured about how to frame his articles or editorialized.

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/zero-hedge-unmasked-theres-more-1427301

According to the Bloomberg article, three men have been churning out all of the content at Zero Hedge, using the joint pseudonym “Tyler Durden” from the Brad Pitt film “Fight Club.” The 1999 cult film, according to Rolling Stone, is “about being young, male and powerless against the pacifying drug of consumerism. It’s about solitude, despair and bottled-up rage.” That ethos is frequently on display at Zero Hedge.

The three “Tyler Durdens” outed by Bloomberg reporters are Colin Lokey, who has now left Zero Hedge in a fit of pique and is responsible for handing over the internal chat sessions from Zero Hedge on traffic-building strategies and other matters. Bloomberg says “the other two men are Daniel Ivandjiiski, 37, the Bulgarian-born former analyst long reputed to be behind the site, and Tim Backshall, 45, a well-known credit derivatives strategist.”

The article notes that “Ivandjiiski has a multimillion-dollar mansion in Mahwah, N.J., and Backshall lives in a plush San Francisco suburb,” suggesting these are “not exactly reflections” of the anti-capitalism reflected in the moniker “Tyler Durden.”

You have a balcony, correct? Do you ever put a chair out on sunny days to enjoy the weather? Or is it not warm enough for that?

Here I definitely do NOT go out to enjoy the sun! I get enough walking the dog and doing yardwork. Most times, when it's sunny, it's too hot and I'm looking for a cool spot - usually indoors. With AC!

I do have a balcony but so far it really hasn't been warm enough to sit out there this year. Maybe if we get more than a couple of days of dry I will. I do have a camping chair out there but I would have to take a good look at it and see if it is usable.

But I'll remember the mop trick.
What's your favorite flavor? Mine is chocolate, or triple chocolate. Not too sweet tho.

I've grabbed tongs from the cookware aisle and used them as well. Sometimes I ask for help nicely from other shoppers or get a clerk. But there wasn't anyone around today, so hence the mop.

I got a box of Magnum mini-bars. They are vanilla ice cream covered in a layer of dark chocolate. Not to sweet either which is why I like them.

Got back from Grams and got a ton of stuff done. I got ALMOST all of the stuff out of the basement. I thought for sure I'd get it done before I left, but holy crap there was a lot of mouse activity before they got rid of them. I'm hoping that they didn't get upstairs too. Nothing out in the open is contaminated, but there's still a lot of things to go through in the 1st and 2nd floors.

It certainly made deciding what to throw out and what to keep a lot easier. To my happy surprise, my Grandma didn't even seem to have any problem at all with me throwing all of that stuff out either. Especially not after I showed her photographs of the carnage as I was going along and doing it.

It looks as though most of the photographs survived, and the small percentage of them that didn't were extremely old-timey ones that I'm pretty sure my Grandma won't even be able to name at this point. I got them all into 4 boxes now by removing all of the old frames and throwing them out with about 40 other bags of junk and all of the furniture and shelving.

I made my aunt's and Grandma's day by finding a photo album they made back in 1990 when they took a trip to Niagara falls together. I also found two pictures of my Grandma when she was in her 20's. Cool how you never seen that before but even though she's at least 65 years older you just know.

I spent about 4 or 5 hours hosing down and bleaching all of the totes. They'll never be good for food or clothing again, but they'll be perfect in my garage on my new shelving. They didn't want them, so huge bonus for me.

I'll probably go back next week to do more. We're going to pass on having them come out by me to see my house this weekend since I was just out there. Gas prices are kind of prohibitive for everyone at the moment and there will be plenty of time for them to see what I've been up to around here.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Well, I'm keeping on keeping on. Did some "indoor work" on the hot days (just general tidying up, mail-sorting, voting, cleaning, ordering stuff online and doing some cooking-ahead). Friday was "doctor day"... I had three (THREE) medical appointments related to side effects from treatment (kidneys, heart, lymphedema). SIGH. And then I couldn't get to sleep for whatever reason until 5AM so I did a big kitchen cleanup at stupid o'clock.

But I did manage to get out today and start prepping the garden for vegetables. I'm so happy I thought to tarp the garden last year, it saved a lot on weeding. So I'm about third of the way thru even tho I only spent an hour and a half on it. Looks much better now!! More gardening planned for tomorrow, maybe if I push it I'll be done with that and then on to raking and planting. Once I get that done I can get back to the front yard. Wish I could tarp it like I do in the back, it would kill weeds and (even better) weed seeds, but it's such tempting item I'd be afraid to leave it out for weeks at a time.

Dog was having a blast chasing after ... whatever she was chasing after. Lizards, prolly. I have another area tarped and she had maaged to dig/worn her way under. I can imagine her going after rats in tunnels. And tonight, she treed a raccoon. Haven't seen them around for quite a while. I definitely don't want them in the yard so I might use your trick, SIX, of putting out ammonia-soaked cotton balls.

Saw a scrub jay today, too, after not seeing any for quite a while. It found a peanut so I hope it'll be back. Found a black feather with white spots- I kid you not. I think it's from a woodpecker of some sort, I hear them from time to time in the avocado tree which tells me it's infested with something, most likely termites. And I saw the usual squirrels, they're always looking for a tasty meal!

I don't fit in a purse though and you've already got too much to carry around with you.

Back in the day, I remember seeing milk cartons all over the place in the grocery stores so people could get a little extra height to grab things they couldn't reach. I'm sure that's something that OSHA here and whatever the Canadian equivalent took out of the stores because a few people fell off of them and sued the stores or something.

:(

If I'm not careful, I get employees reprimanding me for climbing up shelving to get stuff that's too high from time to time. I get it. It's their job to do just that. But any time I've done work in retail I've always been climbing shelving to do my job better and getting yelled at by managers for that too.

I saw a few droplets on the back porch closet floor, but nothing screaming out at me on the kitchen countertop or floor, or anywhere else I've been in the 1st floor. 2nd floor is fairly sparse these days compared to back when I lived there and nothing was visible. I'm thinking there was some activity outside of the basement, but hopefully nothing like the horror show I went through the last few days over there. What I had under the stove and the dish washer in my house was concentrated and far worse, but their problem in the basement overall was bigger than the rest of my house was before I took care of it.

I'm sure my grandma appreciates having me around more, but I don't think doing that for her means anything to her one way or the other. She's got a pretty small world she lives in these days that pretty much spans her bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchen. Anything I've done so far hasn't disrupted any of that in the least. I'm just thrilled that she seems so easy going about me getting everything out. I wasn't expecting that at all. I was so impressed that I actually showed her the before and after pictures of the work and what she doesn't have in the house anymore and she actually seemed pleased that I was doing it. Back when I lived there I couldn't get her to allow me to throw anything out at all, so my uncle and I just had a system of "don't ask for permission, but be ready to beg for forgiveness."

This really is more about helping my aunt out. It's just all become too much for her. She still works full time despite the fact that she could technically retire right now, and to come home to a giant house that is never clean on top of having to take care of my grandma... well... It did ruin her vacation time that she was talking about for the last few months. At least I was able to come over and start cleaning the basement out and get her laundry area bleached down so that wasn't a weekly nightmare for her. And this time while I was cleaning all of those totes I really knocked loose a lot of the sludge in that slop sink and was able to get it about 80% cleaner than when I started, which is actually a lot because that was just downright gross.

I like seeing her in good spirits. It's better for both she and my grandma.

Yeah.

I have some other surprises for her in those boxes too. Once I get around to clearing out the stuff they don't' use anymore from the rest of the house and I can just come over to mostly enjoy their company, I plan on bringing those boxes and totes up one at a time and sitting down with her and seeing if we can't figure out who some of those unmarked photographs are.

That's something I wanted to do with her 20 years ago, but life kind of got in the way.

Back pack and that is true.

I don't remember anything like that when I was a kid but back then it was easier to find a clerk to get something down for you. Or going farther back. My dad could easily reach stuff for my mum off the high shelves.

I have done the climbing up shelves to reach things but that day I didn't feel like it so I got the mop.

From my experience, the problem with "too big" houses is that they tend to become junk traps. It's far too easy to put "something" in that (those) spare room(s) with the idea "I'll get to that later" until it becomes a nightmare. You don't see any messy ship cabins! Everything is selected for size/utility, and everything has to be "stowed".

It would be better to clear out those extra rooms, like you're doing SIX, and close them off.

How does your aunt feel about renting out a room? I know it's a hassle screening prospective renters, but it could add to her income and maybe allow her to not work so many hours. I'm sure going thru the process would be a big burden on her, but in the end it ay be helpful. Or possibly having someone there as "live-in" help? I don't know how well your grandma is doing, but- having taken care of two people with some sort of dementia- they can become agitated and prone to wandering and very hard to take care of bc they get themselves into all kinds of trouble with trying to cook or go somewhere. Altho maybe your grandma is declining physically and incapable of that, which in a way is a blessing in disguise. IDK their situation, but I thought I'd toss that our there as an alternative.

Our older sis is living in our family home, and it's too big for her. She essentially lives on the ground floor, the 2nd story is like a museum of our childhood but it needs to be cleared out. I would LOVE to go over and help! Too bad it's 2700 miles away.

But then, I really need to start HERE. After getting the front and bak yards in tolerable shape, I should set a good example and clean out my "office". Maybe with that example it will inspire hubby to get rid of HIS junk. Another thing I would love to dois put glass or lexan/acrylic doors on our bookshelves. I've mentioned more than a few times that this is a very dusty neighborhood, and it's a lot easier wiping down a glass-fronted bookcase than it is trying to dust every single blessed item! But what to do about dear daughter's stuff? Her eyes work great, but her mind doesn't process what she sees: SHOW her something and she has a hard time describing it, but blindfold her and put it in her hands and she'll tell you right away what it is. It's like she's "mind blind". Altho electrons are tiny and cheap to store, pictures just don't do it for her; she needs the real physical thing to link to memory.

Maybe we just build a lot of storage for her so she can keep her stuff out of the way and where it won't get dusty.

OK, so I know what my next project is ... unless we get derailed by another health problem, that is ... my office!

THANKS for the good example! Now I can say that BRENDA has set such a good example with scheduling and you with cleanup.

I'm glad the mouse problem doesn't seem to be a big issue at your grandmother's. Having you as some company around her house, I am sure she appreciates more than she can say. That's the important thing. Treasure this time you have with both your aunt and grandmother. You are very fortunate to have these people.

Oh, your aunt is going to so love you for all of this.

I'm sure your grandmother will enjoy that. Those old pictures might just kick up some memories and names. Have a pen handy to write on the backs, who, where and a year if possible.

They will love it when they see it then.

Another movie to go back to the library tomorrow. "1917". Very good movie and quite the period piece too.

Started watching "Robert the Bruce" last night. About a Scottish king. Can't bring up the Close Captioning using the regular button on the remote. Got to check out another one that should bring it up. I have a film like that. "Rob Roy" and I have to use the set up button on the DVD remote to get the Close Captioning to come up.

Oh... I know that.

I don't think I'll ever reach my goal of whittling down my possessions to just enough that would fit in a studio apartment while I'm living here, but life has been so much better since I got rid of around 70% of the things I did have everywhere.

Quote:

Yup. I guess that's the plan. My aunt is going to move into the old bedroom that has been an kitchen overflow/junk nightmare for decades now. Sadly, the only shower in the house is on the 2nd floor, but otherwise the intent is to close off the basement and the 2nd floor and only use them for laundry and showering, respectively.

There's no way she'd rent a room out. Unless they lucked out with an amazing tennant, I'd be worried about that person being around my grandma all day while my aunt was working anyhow.

A care person could work out nicely, but I don't think there's any money in anybody's budget for something like that, and I doubt you'd find somebody who would do it for room and board.

I love that idea. It's got to start with ONE room otherwise it will never get done. I would imagine that with you being in the position of needing to influence others in your house to change their own behavior that leading by example is the only way to do it too. Good luck!

Not just cleanup at grams, but organization in my garage too. I've gotten back to building my shelving since I've been able to get enough 2"x4"'s and other various 2" wide boards to rip down for the shelving legs and supports while I've been building up more social credit here and there. Right now, I'll just be lacking the 2" boards to make 2 shelves if I decide to make 18 of them instead of just 15.

I'll have to show you some before/after pictures when I finally get this all finished.

After the shelves are done and I get the garage organized, I'm going to tie in all the outlets I've prepared with hard pipe and finish them off, and then run some more to put 4 to 6 overhead lights for the cool 5000 lumen fan-bulbs that I got which screw right into a regular socket. I will be putting them on two separate switches too so I can light up either half of the garage or both at the same time.

I have done the climbing up shelves to reach things but that day I didn't feel like it so I got the mop.

Oh. We had milk crates in our stores.

I actually got some from my Grandma's basement in my garage now. They're so much easier to grab than one of my ladders when all I need is a foot or so extra reach.

Oh... It WAS a problem in the basement. Not as bad as the nastiness under/behind my stove and dishwasher bad, but worse than any of the rest of my house got bad. I'm still not done either. I have a fruit cellar to clear out that is just as bad as the closet was. The upstairs seems good so far, but there are some closets up there filled with junk that I'm worried about. The fact that nobody has ever seen a mouse upstairs makes me feel a little better, but I already know they were at least doing some minor activity in the porch closet. I'm just hoping they got rid of them before they made a big mess upstairs.

Unfortunately, after decades of cats owning that house, using your sense of smell outside of the basement isn't helping at all here. That house ALWAYS smells funny, with or without mice.

I'm really looking forward to doing that with my Grandma. I hope she can remember at least some of the names. I get the feeling that my aunt doesn't want any of the pictures that weren't of her and her brothers, so I'll probably inherit those old-timey ones and I'd like to know more about them.

No worries. I am old enough that in theory I should be carrying a purse but I don't like them. And I can get more in a backpack.

Don't worry about it. I just don't remember milk crates being left like that up here in BC. Doesn't mean that maybe stores in Eastern Canada didn't do that. As for my dad when he would go with her grocery shopping, he was taller than her. So, she would just ask him to reach things down.

Sorry, I must have misunderstood what you typed. Reading this I get it now. I wish you good luck then.

Well, maybe doing more clearing out and airing out might get rid of the cat smell.

I hope she can. Sometimes photographs can help. They can take a person back to that time and place.

I have old photographs from my dad's side that I know most of the people in them and some have written on them the year and the people. Unfortunately the old photographs I have from my mom's side. Not so much with the writing and years.

So, since I know mice can squeeze in thru incredibly tiny gaps ... we had a wee little field mouse in our house once, and I check our perimeter every now and again to see if we're buttoned up, so I hae NO idea how it got in! ... do you have any idea where the mice might have come through?

Also, in your experience ... do they eventually go away if they don't find food? BC I'm under the impression that there's nothing really edible where you're cleaning. Or do they just come in for the warmth in winter? How old do (did) the mouse evidence look? I guess what I'm really wondering is - do you think this might be an ongoing problem? Or maybe jut an occasional one?

If you're going to write on the backs of photos, it might be better to write with pencil instead of ink or marker. Modern inks are made with solvent, and markers with a LOT of solvent, and I worry that they might bleed thru the photos.

I know EXACTLY where they came in. Or to be more accurate, I know the easiest place they got in. The basement door is one of those doors that are lower than the ground level and you have to go down six or seven steps to get to it (Oh... how nice it would be to not live on a flood plane).

The metal sweep on the bottom of the wood storm door has rusted and broken off. Behind that, the bottom of that door was obviously gnawed at by mice in the middle to get in. The wooden door on the inside never even had a sweep.

After I get more cleaning done, fixing this issue is on my list along with replacing that light above the washer/dryer and installing a new faucet in the kitchen sink.

I have some experience, but I'm not expert, so I couldn't say. My house always had food lying around. I wasn't exactly Mr. Clean or worried about regularly cleaning up after eating back when the house looked so bad all the cleaning in the world still wouldn't make it look good. (Hoarder's Curse).

I haven't seen any food in the basement yet, although it was obvious that there was plenty of nesting material for them because a lot of the boxes they got into had a lot of shredded stuff in side of it along with all the poop.

My aunt is real good about washing dishes right away. My grandma, not so much. But I'd like to think that even with her short term memory problems she'd remember if she saw a mouse come up and nibble on her leftovers. Half the time if my aunt and I are talking about the mice activity and she overhears us it's like brand new news to her.

My aunt did say that upstairs either in the back porch or in the old bedroom off the kitchen that she found a bag of potatoes or something that had been gnawed into and eaten. It is very possible that I'll find more food they've been snacking on up there. Maybe they just went into those two back rooms and got their treats and lived downstairs. It wouldn't be surprising to me if I find some old food up in there that was forgotten. My aunt keeps the fridge clean and reasonably stacked. I remember when I was living there and back when I was a kid my grandma's fridge was always packed so full that you could barely close it. I don't recall ever finding anything gross in there, but then again I never dug too deep either. When I did de-hoard her cabinets and organize them, I found 8 containers of the same spice, with some of them being older than I was.

I don't know how to age mice pee and poop. None of it was wet, so it wasn't brand new, but beyond that who knows how old? The traps that are out haven't been triggered, so there aren't any mice in there currently. Mice are extremely stupid. You could have 5 dead mice in traps right next to one that hasn't gone off yet and the mouse will walk right up to that peanut butter and get itself killed. They can't resist it.

Once everything is clean I'll fix that door and put traps all over the place in spots that nobody will accidentally step on them.

I think it WAS an ongoing problem, and it was ongoing for a lot more than my aunt thought it was. Possibly as long as it's been since the last cat died. I dont' know how long it takes to build up the kind of activity I saw down there or in my own house.

I do know that when the problem becomes large enough that the mice start coming out of the woodwork and getting a lot more bold. When you start seeing them you know you already let the problem get way out of hand. Hopefully the damage upstairs is still minimal and we got to them in time. I was able to save quite a bit of my own stuff, but I had the luxury of time. Anything that was made of fabric needed to be thrown right out though.

I think it will all work out. I just need more time over there. I was planning on going back over this week, but I really need to be getting some stuff done over here like I'm doing right now. Also, I think my aunt is a little overwhelmed with how much crap is now out in the garage that she has to worry about salting out with the trash. she keeps talking about renting a dumpster and that is completely unnecessary. I keep telling her that she asks me if we can clear the house out by the end of summer anyhow, so just keep throwing it out bit by bit while I'm clearing things out and it should all be out by then. Her city is real good about trash pickup and they took about a dozen bags last week on top of the cans. Once the bags are out, then she can put one big or a few small pieces of furniture out with the trash too. I told her that I can make trips around garbage day to do more dehoarding so I can help her with the heavy stuff, or my uncle lives right in the neighborhood and would be happy to help her with that.

Something my grandma said the other day makes me think that its possible we won't be able to name a lot of those old time photographs. It's possible that the entire lot of them were from her first husband's family. He'd be my grandfather by blood, but they split because he chose booze over a family and he died a long time before I was born. My actual grandpa died when I was 5 and they had been married around 25-30 years.

The two really old photographs that I have do have writing on the back but they are in frames now so I can protect them. One is from 1913 and my dad is a child in it, and the other one is from around 1899. It was taken before my grandfather left Scotland to come to Canada. It's of him and his favourite sister.

But I have another one from around the same time period of 1899 that maybe I should put into a frame as well. My grandfather's cousin and another old one from my mom's family. There is nothing on the back and I know nothing about the photograph but I am guessing it is tintype as it is quite heavy.
