Rain today for my area. Heavy at times. Good thing I'm not going anywhere.

I think we need to start another thread. Either the fff.net database is beginning to gag on this one, or my phone is.

I don't have any problems with it.

You set to only show 50 posts per page?

I am off to work in the morning. Got a call from my boss a while ago. It will be a soggy one as there is still rain for tomorrow.

Do you have problems loading up the Garden, Brenda? Do you have it set for 50 posts per page?

..... Yanno what? I don't know if we can still even change that if somebody isn't set for 50 posts per page.

I did it years and years back (when the site was a different color) when I was having a problem loading pages at somebody else's suggestion, and now the only time I have trouble loading any pages is in the music threads where there are a lot of YouTube videos to load up at one time.

But I can't find any option to do that now.

It was probably a glitch is fff.net database. It was displaying the pages, as it normally does, then the content, then the pages, again, which it shouldn't do. And it did that three times in a row.

All of these kinds of websites operate on some sort of database. I'm not a db expert, but I've worked with many MANY databases, and I know that even the very expensive ones aren't infinitely extensible. You run into a limit somewhere - a limit on the number of bytes in a field, or a limit on the number of fields in a table, or a limit on buffer size, or the amount of RAM a db takes up... any number of program and physical limitations.

We've seen the db crap out before, where it lost the link between a username and its content (I think that happened with MIKE R bc the username still appears but the content is gone) or lost a username completely (I think that happened with KPO and BRENDA bc not only did the content disappear, so did their usernames).

Anyway, databases aren't infallible.

I prefer not to stress the architecture in case the whole thread craps out, so maybe we should end this thread and re-start someplace else?

No, I don't SIX. I didn't know you could do something like that about how many posts show.

The only time someone showed me how to do anything like change how a site worked was for the Official Board.

Hey SIX. Forgot to tell you, I finished watching season 1 of "Miss Scarelet and the Duke." It was slow starting and by the last episode it had picked up. Have to see if I can find the second season.

One of the actors from Jamestown is in it playing the police inspector. He cleans up real good and I found myself thinking, "I'd like one of those."

Hehe. Are you talking about Mrs. Scarlett's "foil". I only saw the first episode, but it looks like things might get spicy.

I'm not sure if you can do it anymore. I can't seem to find any way to change the amount of posts that show on a page anywhere now. I'm assuming that it used to be in your profile settings at one point, but maybe it was dropped and you were stuck with whatever setting you had before the site changed colors?

I'm okay with that. Your 2nd thread is as good a place as any.

If Brenda's on board, why don't you put the final post in here with a link to the new Garden thread? I'll just post in the new one for now while you two sort it out.

Wow, this has been a hard, hard year for gardening. Last rainy season started out early and promising; October 2013 we got a couple of good rainstorms and then .... nothing. Nothing. More nothing. Which dragged on to the historic drought.

Usually my water usage goes down during winter, but not last winter. I had to water the garden areas every week, and the lawns twice a week (one of the reasons I'm xeriscaping) just to keep them alive. I took special pains with the two avocados and the camellias because they're the grandparents of the backyard, planted by the previous owners sixty years ago. I soaked them deeply at least once a month. But despite my best efforts, the plants still suffered - not from lack of water, but possibly from high salt buildup or basic soil ... the older avocado and camellia leaves took on a pale bronzy color, and needles on my canary island pines were just beginning to turn yellow.

In addition, the tomatoes were crippled and the eggplant killed by a horrible infestation of spider mites. Last year, I gave away almost thirty pounds of homegrown tomatoes and had all of the eggplant I wanted. This year, I was lucky to have enough fresh tomatoes for a weekly salad, and just a few eggplant before they gave up the ghost. The spider mites went on to attack a few more plants (which fortunately I didn't care so much for). My Italian flat beans- which I've never grown before - and my sunflowers (which I HAVE grown before) were spindly and unproductive. Same seed source. I wonder if the seed was good. At least the corn came up OK.

Two of my recently-planted sundrops died, I only have one left. This is a good representation of what the survivor looks like in my garden

and one of my verbena lilacena died, I only have two left ... another good representation

For no reason that I can see except they really, really didn't appreciate such hard wellwater. And then, the summer was hot and humid - tropical, even - and some native plants which are adapted to cool wet winters and hot DRY summers responded with a fantastic case of mildew. I broke down and got some Neem oil so that next year I'll be prepared for the onslaught.

I have NEVER failed with so many plants all in one season! This was a gardening year I was happy to close the book on, and I now have a much MUCH greater appreciation for the commercial farmer, who lives or dies by whether plants produce or not.

-------------
But in order to be a gardener or a farmer, one must be an optimist, I guess. I've been buying my xeriscape plants mostly in onesies and twosies because I really don't know how they'll grow, or what they'll look like ... or what I want ... and the reality is that I'll still have a surprising amount of bare space, even when the plants mature.

So I took out several of my CA native/ xeriscape gardening books, and just looked at the pictures and figured out what I respond to, and what I hate, and the principles behind both. And I just ordered a crap-ton of plants: Spanish lavender (because it looks most like the Great Basin sagebrush that I like, which won't grow here because the winters are too warm),

penstemon BOP which looks like a micro boxwood when not in bloom

white monkeyflower

blue-eyed grass

and Indian rice grass

to go with the germander sage, Dusty Miller, red autumn sage, and the creeping Oregon grape and various native currants and snowberries under the trees.

I hope, when all is done, that you would feel as if you were in some very nice landscape, something that nature had put together in a happy combination of loveliness.

----------------
And then we got RAIN!!!! A storm last Sunday dropped an unexpected 1/2 inch of rain on our location, and the storm which followed added another inch. I once again found myself wishing I had a rain barrel or two or seven. The plants already look happier for the soft water.

So there it is for the garden so far this year. A horrible horrible season, but maybe things will turn around this rainy season year and we'll get at least the usual amount. I still plan to xeriscape more lawn, it just takes a surprising amount of plants to fill in the spaces, I'm finding out!

I hope you enjoyed the pictures. One of these days -when the plants mature - I'll take real photos of my real garden and post them online.

Come on, that's not your garden. You're as bad a liar as Trump. Hey maybe you can get him to fertilize it for you. He does that now.

I have sources too. Larry Johnson, former CIA analyst. Alex Christoforou, blogger. Scott Ritter, former Marine and USA and UN weapons inspectors.

Unlike your shill, they sometimes broadcast FROM RUSSIA. Johnson is in Russia NOW, in fact, interviewing military ppl, politicians etc, taking Russian political temperature, so to speak, and they all observe everyday life in Russia.

ETA: Col Wilkerson, Col Douglas MacGreggor, Col Daniel Davis.

Get better sources.

He's a Russian propagandist.

You think all those Colonels are Russian propagandists? Former Marine and international weapons inspector Scott Ritter? Former Marine Brian Berletic?
Those who broadcast from Russia... some do "walk and talk". I get to see what's going on in the background. It's not what you imagine.

What do you think is gonna happen, son? A palace coup in Russia? Russian troops running back to the border? At what point will I "have to acknowledge" a Russian defeat? If you're going to make a prediction, be specific and put a time limit on it, bc even a broken watch is right twice a day.

Seriously? Ukraine is dark practically from end to end. Russia isn't.

Blackouts Sweep Russia — What They’re Not Saying

And it's been getting worse the last few weeks! Today for example, I struck out at 4 of 5 places where I went shopping! ... just looking for ordinary, everyday stuff.

Walgreens - Walgreens-branded sugar and dye-free cough syrup, and hand sanitizer, not a single one on the shelf. Albertsons - lite salt (discontinued entirely, even though I'd been buying it there for 10 years), it was the only reason I'd shop there.. Chevron - not pumping gas at all, open, but not for buying gas. Vitamin City - no paper towels or ground pork, at all. Target - no shampoo or paper towels. The only place that had what I wanted was Trader Joe's.

It's so time-consuming and frustrating!

I feel like there should be some geezer sitting behind the counter, picking his nails with a camp knife, saying ... nope, we don't have none of that here, neither. Not since the gas station burned down in oh-five.

Has anybody else noticed the same thing?

Seeing that here, too. Too many times lately I've come home and had to tell hubby (after he's asked for something specific) that they did't have it in the store, like sugar-free lozenges. Or had to change my menu because they didn't have picnic roast (pork) or full fat plain yogurt. I can understand not being able to find Thai red curry paste or shirataki noodles, but when you can't find reduced fat Swiss cheese or xfirm tofu or frozen peaches or frozen corn, something's fucked up.

Happy New Year, WISHY. I edited out your psychopathic screed!

Hmmmmmmm....

Anybody think these "shortages" might be due to the fact that everybody has some local Amazon warehouses that are stockpiling things that normally would be dispersed among the local stores?

Not making any claims or anything. But I do happen to notice Amazon trucks in my area every single day when I'm working outside. We're kind of in a tucked away area of the city that doesn't have a lot of outlets and no thruways to major intersections too, so if I see that truck it is for somebody specifically within a 4 block radius. On about 6 occasions in the last year I was the guy they were delivering to.

Most stuff you can get on Amazon is priced lower than the local stores as long as you can weasel free shipping and don't let them take it back that way. I'd say my average savings on goods from Amazon, shipped to my door for free, is anywhere from 20% to 75% off of what I would pay for it in the store when it wasn't on sale.

If the shortages are somehow due to Amazon's local warehouses popping up all over the place, I expect that problem not to get any better, even if it doesn't get worse.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

e pipes, and our blu-ray DVD player broke. It's got to be at least 10 years old, but they will still repair it if I ship it to Menlo Park (all things considered cheaper than buying new) so that's what I've been in touch with the mfr about.

Fortunately my nose is making enuf progress that I can sleep thru the night mostly, so I've been back to taking puppywuppy out for her AM walk and then yardwork before it gets too hot, then kitchenwork until its time to start on the house projects.

We started prepping the walls for daughter's room with a little sanding, but I thought to get the lead check swabs and by golly it looks

like the first coat of paint has lead in it. So I halted the sanding and got some first-class info on what to do next: wipe the walls with trisodium phosphate to pick up any lead paint pigment that may have powdered off over the years, seal everything with sealer (I was going to to that anyway) and then paint. So we got a little hitch in our plans, and today was lunch with dear daughter which set things back one more day.

She'd been bugging me to try this Mexican restaurant that looks like a real dive from the outside, I was ready to try a taco place but, well, what the hell we went to questionable-looking place. And wouldn't you know, it was quite charming on the inside, and it specialized in what I was looking for, which is fish! So I ordered a fillet (probably tilapia) which came pan-fried in an egg batter topped with shrimp and crab in a mildly-spicy sauce, with rice (gave that to dear daughter) beans, and salad. From what little I can taste I think it was well-prepared and I suspect that if I COULD taste it more, it would be really good. Then for dinner I had some leftover Greek-style salad from yesterday and topped it with a little leftover tuna so dinner was pretty good too!

Wish I was making progress like you, SIX! Even on your "bad" days you do pretty good!

sunny that it still felt warm. I didn't even realize that the high yesterday was only 22 degrees. So when I went out shopping, I wasn't exactly dressed for the occasion, and my hair still wasn't completely dry an hour after I took a shower. (Yeah... I forgot how nice it is to have your hair ready in 1 minute when it's short).

It didn't really hit me how cold it was until the wind went right through me while I was unloading my cart in the car, taking the cart back and getting back in the car. Chilled to the bone. I took off my mask and felt something hard behind my ear and almost freaked out imagining what kind of animal or something was on me until I realized that it was my frozen hair. Jeez....

Not feeling under the weather or anything, but I think I'm going to try to limit my time working in the chilly basement today just in case. I'll paint those doors and shelves, then I'll try stripping a few shelves upstairs after laying down some tarps first.

Seriously reconsidering having torn up that vinyl floor in the kitchen this early in. But still happy to have gotten it out though too.

A government is a body of people usually, notably, governed by Mark Zuckerborg and Slack Dorsey.

Well back in upstate NY, for fun, I used to go out with wet hair, shake my head and listen to the icicles clink against each other.

But, I hear ya about the wind. It feels like it's going right thru you if you're not dressed for it.

*****
Over here, it's raining. A couple of days off no rain, then three more days of predicted rain. I was cold last night, forgot to turn on the heat after airing out the house, plus the air cleaner was blowing on me, so the comforter wasn't quite hacking it. Woke up curled into a little ball at 5AM, turned the air cleaner away, tossed a heavy bathrobe over the comforter and slept a lot more comfortably!

The front of my house faces north, uphill. Whenever I water the trees on the northwest in the front yard I get a water seep on the west side yard downhill from it. If I do EXTRA watering, the coast live oak even further downhill on the west side yard sprouts extra-long new shoots.

I even have a funny story. As you might remember, my house is now quite old - even (sadly) a city historic house (with a crap-ton of restrictions and the official city interest that comes with it). And though you're not supposed to discuss a lady's age, she's 112 this year. Anyway, back when I bought it, it still had all the original plumbing, including a hose bibb in the rear that suddenly broke and was almost leaking a steady stream. But there were a lot of various ongoing medical emergencies over time, and I just didn't have the opportunity to deal with it. So I got a really short hose and attached it to the hose bibb, and put on a nozzle that I could at least shut off - mostly. It had a really, really slow drip - maybe 2 (or 3 maximum) drips a minute. Crisis - not solved but at least addressed!

A few months later, my back-door neighbor from across the alley south of me and one lot west - which is downhill in two directions - asked me if I had a water leak in my yard - because he was having a seep coming up in his!

And I sort of got alerted to this because years ago I had asked an arborist why my big trees were doing OK even though I didn't water them (dry, dry, dry sunny SoCal was a mystery to me), and she said it was because the people upslope from me were watering their lawns too much.

So, yeah, subsurface surface-water flow - it happens!

Stop using my signature to insult me stupid. I'm here and here i will stay until it stops.
