Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

For some, it's a loss of a sense of security. For some it's a sense of worthlessness. For some it's a feeling of helplessness. For some it's a feeling of emptiness. For you it seems to be loneliness. I hear you. "This too shall pass."

What's with the knee? BRENDA: Those times I tripped and fell, landing hard on my knees and hands. Means now my knees bother me when I am standing too long or sitting too long. I put my heating pad on it last night(Sunday) and it was okay today but then I was in all day. Am going to put my heating pad on it again before I go to sleep and hope that staves off the pain in my left one in particular tomorrow when I am out.

Quote:Originally posted by SIGNYM: NSAIDS are NOT painkillers. They are NonSteroidal AntiInflammatory DrugS and include aspirin, ibuprofen, meloxicam, naproxen, etc. https://www.drugs.com/drug-class/nonsteroidal-anti-inflammatory-agents.html Inflammation is a complex process set off by the immune system in reponse to damage or disease, but what it eventually involves is your capillaries becoming "leaky" and letting fluid and white blood cells swarm the site of damage/infection in order to ward off disease. Wht that does is cause swelling, redness, heat, and pain. NSAIDS shut off that process. They work AT THE SITE OF INFLAMMATION, THEY DO NOT ACT IN YOUR BRAIN. They DO tend to cause generalized sodium and water retention, I assume because the affect the small capillaries in your kidneys. Please don't avoid them on the mistaken assumption that they are "painkillers". TYLENOL IS a painkiller. It is a non-opioid drug that DOES act in your brain to reduce the brain's response to pain. Unlike NSAIDS which can cause gastrointestinal bleeding and water retention (kidneys) Tylenol can do a number on your liver if overdosed or combined with alcohol. There are opioid-based painkillers that I can imagine would interact with any number of anticonvulsants including carbamazepine. Codeine is the most common one prescribed for pain and is commonly mixed with tylenol and sold as codeine/paracetamol, co-tylenol, tylenol#3, tylenol#4 etc but these are available only by prescription. The most effective painkiller OTC combo that I know of is an NSAID combined with Tylenol. The NSAID acts at the site of inflammation and reduces the source of pain, while Tylenol acts in your brain to reduce the perception of pain. The two combined work far better than just an additive effect. TBH I tend to avoid both, partly because I already have a problem wth water retention and also bc I do drink alcohol. For me, I go with rest, heat (those chemical heat patches work super well for me, they provide a very low level of heat for over 12 hours and work great), gentle motion and gradual return to normal activity. I only take meloxicam when every joint with arthritis flares up (fingers, knuckles, hips, knees, ankles, feet) and the pain keeps me from sleeping. It works great, but I know I'll put on 5 lbs of water weight and my fingers and feet will puff up. But, as always, your mileage may vary. Only you know how you react to specific medications. ----------- Pity would be no more, If we did not MAKE men poor - William Blake #WEARAMASK

Quote: BRENDA: I have taken naproxen I think years ago when I sprained my back. It did work. Would have to talk to my GP about something like naproxen when her office is open again. Know they don't go through the brain BUT given that I can't use certain allergy medications because of my seizure meds, I am careful about any and all medications I take for anything. Also if I need an antibiotic my doctor has to be careful of what she prescribes for me. I have learned over the years what this seizure medication is like.
