Tons and tons of wispy rain last night. PERFECT conditions to really give my latest car fixes a test. She fired up without a problem and didn't give me any trouble on my trek home. :)

I'm still a little concerned about my transmission though. It does seem to be doing better overall since I put the Seafoam Hydra in there, but it's really sticking sometimes before getting into top gear and sometimes I'm hitting 3,000RPMs for a while before it kicks in and I'm only going about 55MPH.

I probably need to just go ahead and change the fluid now that it has had some time to get de-gunked and see what happens. Hopefully I have a semi-warm day when I get off of work to do it. Shouldn't be any more difficult than an oil change. Maybe I'll change the oil again now that I've flushed everything out with the seafoam too.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Are you still keeping secret the brand name of this car? That determines how your transmission works.

I've heard from someone with a similar-sounding problem that the screen in the transmission being clogged is sometimes a problem. The trans works on hydraulics, if the screen s clogged the trans fluid doesn't get through to do the job.

The weird thing is Kiki is this friend sent it a week before my birthday, which means I should have gotten it around my birthday or just after. We don't know what happened with the post as it is not close enough for people to start thinking about sending things overseas for Christmas.

I'm wondering if my landlady got to it first and for some reason just suddenly realized it wasn't for her and put it back out.

Or if the post just got really, really wonky for a bit. Still it was there either Thursday or Friday but I was too tired to check, so I checked yesterday and what a nice surprise.

Mid 90's Toyota. Great car to work on for somebody who doesn't know about cars. Ask me how I know.

Thanks. I'll have to look into that. If changing the fluid doesn't fix the issue I'm going to have to do something about it. I've come to far now to worry about this thing all winter, or even worse get stranded somewhere.

I don't recall working on tranny problems of Toyotas. I don't think they are based on vacuum.

The filter is a good tip, and should be cheap. If you need to drop the pan to change fluid, the filter should be right there, easy to replace at the same time. Flushing a bunch of crud in your system could have clogged the filter. If it is dissolvable crud, you are probably not driving it enough to allow it to dissolve fast enough.

Is your ONLY transmission problem the shifting? That will mess with your traction come snow/ice driving.

Some Trans use hydraulics for shifting. Some shift based upon mechanical actuation, or air pressure, or vacuum, or computer processing of the speed sensors of Trans input and output.

How many months did you go without letting SeaFoam fix your problems?

Mine's a 95 Toyota corolla sw, but with a manual shift. But even though it's been a one-owner car all its 'life' (me), at this point vital things are breaking down. The ac and trip odometer went years ago (I never got them fixed - I'll see your cheap ass bid and raise it), but just a few months back the hydraulic valve that moves the clutch back and forth went kersplat. Fortunately I found a cheap good mechanic.

Also jack, as I was thinking about it ... when my clutch went out and I couldn't shift out of gear (fortunately on a surface street instead of the freeway) it was late in the eve and raining. To top it all off, I had forgotten my cell phone. I was able to limp it in to a Target parking lot and after pumping the clutch pedal shift it out of gear and park. And thankfully the store was still open and they let me use a store phone to call AAA.

But those two things - a phone and AAA - really saved me some serious problems.

Perhaps you could invest in a prepaid cell phone for emergencies, and a basic AAA membership. And given where you live, maybe one of those plastic foil emergency 'space' blankets in case you end up spending time in a cold car.

Yeah. I don't recall ever owning a car that had working A/C.

I've got an automatic, so there is no clutch. Well... I guess I shouldn't say that. There's no manual clutch, anyhow. Don't know enough about it.

I've got "free" towing with my car insurance. Depending on how far I make it to work, it might cost a little money out of pocket. I've been talking about getting a burner phone forever now. Should probably do it if changing the fluid doesn't work. Blankets wouldn't be a bad idea either.

The first time I noticed a sticking sensation while driving would have been a few years ago. It was very rare though. It hasn't been a constant problem until the last month or two though.

The bad starts happened in mid spring.

Changing the transmission fluid on this car is as easy as removing the plug, draining it and then replacing the fluid through the dip stick. Changing the filter would be a bit more complicated, but probably not too bad.

I must have always ended up with no drain plug, had to drop the pan. If you do drop the pan, ensure you have a new gasket handy, and a sharp spatula (putty knife) to scrape off the tenants of the old gasket. Then pray the old gasket detaches easily and intact.

Yeah. I have no clue what any of my other cars were. The transmission went out on my first ride when I was around 18 years old, but they wanted more than I paid for the car to rebuild it.

I had seen that it could be a bit more complicated to change the fluid, but these mid 90's Toyotas seem to be extremely user friendly. Thanks for the tips. I'll definately be watching some youtube videos before I do anything since I'd have to walk a few miles to buy spare parts if something goes awry, assuming they'd even stock something like that. Otherwise I'd be waiting for it to ship online.

I forgot to reply to this part of your last post:

I think so... It's an automatic, like every car I've ever owned. Don't really know much about transmissions since they've all just done all of the work for me and I never thought about them until they stopped working right.

I drive really careful these days compared to my youth, and I don't ever tailgate. Replaced the breakpads a while back and gave them a thorough test, so hopefully I'm good. Fingers crossed.

For traction in snow/ice you need low torque. Which is the tallest gear possible. Meaning the tires moving fast while the engine is very low rpms. So at 25mph you want the transmission to be in the highest gear possible.
If trans doesn't shift, engine revs higher, where it has too much torque, and it will rip away traction when slippery.
Also, when trans does shift, at high rpm, it will rip away traction as soon as the new gear engages - and this is at the higher velocity. Losing traction means you can't control your car, and if FWD, your steering.
Traction happens when the speed of the vehicle on the road surface perfectly matches the speed of the tire tread. When the speed of the tire tread is different, either faster or slower, then you don't have traction.

It sounds like you've never read your Owner's Manual. Do you know what your 1 and 2 (or L and M) gear selection are for?

That's something I hadn't thought about kiki. Probably depended on what they were letting off. I couldn't see them just heard them. Mind couldn't see anything really out the windows. Couldn't see the other side of the river. Got more fog tonight by the look of things.

I'm usually alright in the cold, at least until it dips down into the double digits negative. But it was almost seventy degrees just a short while ago and it was ZERO with the windchill last night at work, and the wind was howling.

So glad to be home now. Especially since I stopped being such a cheap ass and I've got the thermostat at 65. Not exactly toasty on the 1st floor where I sleep at around 60 degrees, but nothing a blanket won't fix. :)

Hi Jack. I'm doing okay. Just tired and wanting to decorate for Christmas can't really around here. Frustrated too and sometimes just down.

Cold in here now and little to no heat where I am. Hence the frustration.

Also thinking about getting Christmas cards into the mail because Canada Post has decided on rotating strikes a month or more before December, which is probably why the last birthday card I received from the UK was so late in reaching me.

Also Remembrance Day seems to be hitting me a little harder than usual this year. Will be posting my piece on it later.

I feel ya. Got a bit of the SAD's right now myself. In a few more day's I'll have a long string of days off and I'm not really even looking forward to them. I'm going to have to find some motivation to do something when I'm not working because last time I was off I literally did nothing productive. Weather had finally gotten more reasonable here. In the summer, I just kind of estervate. But the heat and humidity has kind of abated, and this past week was sunny, breezy, and cool-to-warm. So I've been spending an hour or two most mornings whipping the landscaping into shape .. digging and raking out the weeds, planting even more plants!, taking out some of the plants that failed or that aren't garden-worthy, raking up all of the leaves and in general tidying up. (Making up for not having done a thing along those lines over the summer). Filled up my two greenwaste bins, again, so no more gardening until the bins are emptied on Monday. I suppose tomorrow will be mail and bills and pre-filling out the paperwork for window permits and in general taking care of the INside of the house for a change!

Keep your head up. I know that is much easier said than done sometimes, but I can say from experience now that once I started making a real effort to do that myself that good things started coming my way. Nothing overnight, and nothing mind blowing when you just look at the little things by themselves, but when I look back on the last 1 year, 11 months and 11 days of my sobriety and all the stuff that I've accomplished in that time I'm in a much better situation than I used to be in.

It's always going to be an uphill struggle since my days of making "easy livin" money are over and I'm not getting any younger, but to look at things positively that just means more opportunities to learn new things like all of the stuff I've learned about cars this summer instead of just taking it in to get it fixed or buying a new one.

That's awesome that you can make your own scarves (and I'm assuming other things as well?). I know how good it feels to create something of your own and sit back and say "I did that" when it's done. Maybe there's something else you can find to add to your hobby list in the cold months?

I've got to get back into my big project myself. It's been about a month since I worked on it at all, and even though last week off was my first time where I had absolutely nothing pressing to do I couldn't even find the desire to work on it. I think I've just got to adjust to the cold again. I think maybe I'm just a bit mentally exhausted after the mid-terms too. I spent too much time paying attention to that, and I really don't know why I bothered really.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

So how's everyone doing?

Been sick at this end with a (so far) two-week cold. These respiratory viruses always wind up in my bronchi, which (aside from my sinuses) seem to be my really weak point. So things have been going slower than they should have, here. Plus, dealing with city permits is a thing that bothers me but needs to be done. It's funny, but I used to work in a government agency and yet I hate dealing with regulatory agencies, insurance companies, and other consequential bureaucracies.

I'm definitely feeling my age. Sometimes just standing up is a problem!

Doing well. Got to hang out with my bro and niece today. We finally got to play with a new toy that I bought a few months ago but haven't had a chance yet. Advertised as "promotes interest in STEM", although I'm sure all the toys say that these days.

Whenever she comes over she likes building "castles" out of a few random coushins that I have, but they were really small and I didn't have a lot of other stuff to build with. I saw this thing online that was kind of like a giant erector set with 40 sticks with 20 balls that can all be connected and you can throw a sheet over it. I wasn't sure what the quality would be like or if it would work like I hoped, so I only bought one at the time. It was great though and we had a lot of fun building it. It would have worked better if she let us build it shorter and wider, but she wanted it tall, and she's the foreman, so I pretty much had to hold it up while she was playing in it. Extra sets aren't super expensive, so I'm planning on ordering a few more maybe for a Christmas present or something. Make something huge and a little more sturdy out of it.

I thought it was pretty funny that the Engrish instructions showed 3 samples that you could build with it, and all of them would require more pieces than came in a single set. :)

I'm going to have to find some motivation to do something when I'm not working because last time I was off I literally did nothing productive. I'm not giving myself too much crap about that since it's been over a year since I did something like that, but I can't start making that a habit in between work stints.

Hope things start looking up for you. The best thing about winter is that it always ends. :)

I can appreciate that Jack. I'm sure you will find something to do.

So do I. And I am trying to keep good thoughts in my head and maybe I will find something to decorate this dump with. Never know.

I am part way through making another handmade scarf for myself. I can't find scarves in stores that I like so I make my own. I knit them and they do come out pretty good if I do say so myself.

Congratulations on the almost 2years of sobriety. That is great.

I try to look forward to learning new things. Like picking up words in different languages. Lady that I play mah jong with has taught me how to say thank you in Filipino as that is her nationality and duck. I've also learned to say thank you in Korean over the last year or so.

Let's see. Over the years, I have made blankets both knitted and crocheted. Once I made a pair of mittens for my mom.

I am still trying to get back to finding a publisher for my book. I do mean to but I do and then I stop and stall.

*Hugs* Sig on the sickness.

*knock on wood* I'll stay healthy this winter. Though right now I am trying to figure out how to stay warm without my landlady finding out what I am doing.

Weather is still hopping between dry and rain. Suppose to rain later this week.

Hoping to get one Christmas card into the mail this week and the rest by the end of the month. Hopefully that goes smooth with Canada post and striking workers.

Have you got her a 3-D jigsaw puzzle? Many of those are castles. I just got one for $1 for my mom, my brother has put her in like an old people prison.

When my niece's were very young, I got them train sets with interlocking track, so they would learn geometry like I did. Their dolls all rode around the track.
Now they are both in Engineering schools.

Have you had adequate test of your SeaFoam repair?

No, I don't want her to know what I am doing as she will come flying down at me and start bitching about her bills and might actually evict me.

She has and a couple of weeks ago she even waved to me as she walked past me and said hello. But I am still treading carefully. No, you are right and I have been quietly cursing up at the ceiling.

It's actually not hard at all. It was hard breaking the cycle at first, for sure, but I haven't had any cravings or even any real thoughts about drinking for at least a year and a half. I'm wondering how much of my problem with beer was alcoholism and how much of it was just me being bored.

I've always wanted to learn how to play mah jong since they played it in Deadwood. I don't know how to play that game itself, and I'm not sure what all the tiles mean, but I do enjoy playing a game called Shanghai that uses those tiles. It's sort of to Mah Jong as Solitare is to Poker.

Sorry to hear about your mom. I keep trying to persuade my own mom to start working out again to increase her mobility. It's a lot better with her MS down in Arizona because of the climate than it was up here, but that's all the more reason for her to try to improve things now. My step-dad is quite a bit older and won't be around forever. I have no idea what's going to happen in the future there myself. I already told my brother not to expect me to take her in because I'm not going to end up being a living caricature of Principal Skinner.

I haven't really ever bought my niece much of anything. She's got a billion toys. I'm the only person I'm aware of that she gets excited to see just because she wants to play instead of asking first thing "what did you get me?". Now that she's getting old enough to appreciate stuff and she can start playing with interesting things that we both can enjoy I'm going to be looking into getting more stuff that we can do when she comes over. I'll definitely be looking into toys that teach like my grandpa did when I was her age.

The seafoam seems to have worked wonders with my engine and oil pan. I haven't had any missfires for a long time now, and I haven't had any problems starting the car or keeping it running once it's started. On the other hand though, the transmission is not looking good. I keep hoping we'll get a bought of warm weather for me to drain it and put new fluid in, but it's been too cold for me to do that and it's not likely to warm up until spring. I'm just hoping that it survives the winter and even if I have to learn how to replace the transmission at that point I've heard I can get a rebuilt one for around $250. Finger's crossed.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Basically layering up on clothes specially my top half. I wear a sweater and gloves and socks to bed, along with a hot water bottle.

Have bought a heating pad but I haven't had the nerve to break it out and use it yet.

From my understanding of alcoholism, I think boredom can play into it. But I'm happy that you are sober. That is great work.

Yes. A couple that run a hamburger place in a strip mall food court near where I live, I asked the wife how to say thank you and she told me.

Learning about the tiles in mah jong is easy but learning how to count the points is hard. I've been playing with the tiles for over 3years and I still get mixed up in the point counting sometimes. Shanghai or Tai pei was the first mah jong type of game I found on the computer. Then I found true mah jong and got hooked. I still play on the computer and can play for hours. The tiles consist of the four winds, 3 sets of dragons, characters which are numbered 1-9, circles numbered 1-9, bamboo numbered 1-9. Also 4 sets of flowers.

When my niece was about 6, I got her a logic puzzle which can be set into different puzzles. She didn't know what to do and asked me how to solve it. I asked her what she thought she should do and how, and once she finished one, she did an entire set in no time. Her dad, my brother is an Engineer, and he couldn't figure out any of the puzzles she had just done. She seemed to have spurred onward in STEM after that.

Looks like that rainstorm is heading this way anyway, as predicted. Not huge ... somewhere between 0.25" to 0.75" ... but enough, I hope, to put out the fires which are still burning.

Gosh, it's hard to imagine the devastation of the Camp Fire which wiped out most of the city of Paradise. 1300 missing last I heard, many of them elderly. And down here in So Cal ... dear daughter and I used to go cabin=camping in the Santa Monica mountains with the Epilepsy Foundation, when they sponsored that kind of event. Beautiful area full of oak. I heard its mostly charred now.

*****

But at least the rain will help all my newly-planted plants! The front yard was looking like a sandpit over the summer; I'm sure the neighbors were none-too-happy but it makes no sense to put $200 worth of plants in when you know they're going to die in two weeks. I'm so looking forward to these plants growing up and looking fabulous!

"Have bought a heating pad but I haven't had the nerve to break it out and use it yet." Oh ... dear ... it may not be as useful as you hope. The newer heating pads, here anyway, have built-in timers somewhere in the switch. They only stay on for an hour or so. I guess too many people were falling asleep with them and ending up with low-temperature burns which are just as nasty as regular ones - they just take longer to get.

The newer heating pads, here anyway, have built-in timers somewhere in the switch. They only stay on for an hour or so. I guess too many people were falling asleep with them and ending up with low-temperature burns which are just as nasty as regular ones - they just take longer to get.

It's okay Kiki. I used one the other year ago so I know what I am getting in to when I do use it. I will be fine.

Oh happy rain day!!

Some time between when I went to bed around 11:30 when it was just beginning to sprinkle, and 4:30 when I woke up at stupid-o'clock, it must have poured like a sunuvab!tch because my informal rain gage has well more than (the maybe, predicted) 0.25" in it. So I'm thankful for the approx 1" of rain that we got instead of the (maybe) 0.25" that they were predicting.

rain + subsequent sun = weeds but I have my trusty daughter to help.

The land is smiling and once again we have been blessed.

Ah. So you've played Shanghai before. :)

I didn't know it was also called Tai Pei. I only knew the tiles represented numbers kind of in passing, since you don't need to know the actual number values in any version of the game I've ever played. The circles and bamboo were self explanatory, but I just assumed the characters had to be numbers written out as well. The flowers were kind of tricky for me to pick up without any context or instructions.

It's a fun game. I've never known anybody who knows how to play Mah Jong.

Yes, I have.

The flowers can be though with the tiles the flowers are easier to follow.

It is a fun game. As I said I have been hooked on it for years.

You can also look for games endorsed by MENSA.

Nice.

Do you have any other suggestions? Preferably anything $20 and under. I'd kind of like to build up a good collection of "smart" toys for her when she comes over. She's still at that age where her imagination can make anything a toy, but she'll probably be growing out of that soon.
