Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

But I think you need boxes for the stuff you have to unpack first which are things you use every day: boxed food you eat often like cereal; 1 set of everday pots, pans, dishes, silverware, dish terg and sponges; a change of clothes, bathroom supplies, a few towels and washclothes, and one set of linens. And some things automatically sort themselves like clothes in a closet and clothes in a dresser. OTOH you may or may not have a linen closet/ pantry/ built-in bookshelves/ desk/ in your new/ old place, so it makes no sense to me to be carefully organizing everything by one set of organization. Just put it all in boxes and sort it when you get there according to the rooms, closets and storage spaces in the new place. One family I know used the extra clothes and linens to pack the fragile stuff. :)

He got out AGAIN today. Fortunately I was able to round him up pretty quickly across the street before he scampered up the hill into the undeveloped wild part. I shook a bag of treats and he came sidling over. The last time he did this, I looked and looked. That wasn't the first time he got out, but every time before that I was able to retrieve him after an hour or 2. The last time I looked for 5 hours. I thought he was gone for good, irretrievably lost, or maybe quietly eaten, or hurt ... Then finally around 2AM I went to the internet and looked up 'how to find a lost cat' and that's where I found the 'bag of treats' tip. Yanno, go around with that bag of treats shaking it so they can hear the treats rattling inside. Which is how I got him back in the house at 2:30AM. This neighborhood is NOT friendly to indoor / outdoor cats. Out of the 5 I had previous to Einstein (he's a ridiculously smart cat, he can open every single interior door in the house), 2 were eaten by coyotes, and one was run over by a car. As much as he wants to go o.u.t. it's not going to happen if I can help it. He is HUGE. I'm 5'7" and when he stretches up to reach for my attention, his front paws come just below my chest. He sleeps in a dog bed and fills it. And he's STRONG. I mention this because he recently tore out a window screen. THIS time around, he pushed the damn window open before he hopped out through the previously torn screen. So now I have to keep it completely closed - AND LOCKED. Also, I had $$ecurity $$creen doors put in because I knew for a fact he would just rip through a regular one. I hope he appreciates all I go through for him! (Just kidding. He's a cat. But despite being feral with pretty much everyone else, he's deeply attached to me. So somewhere along the line, what I do counts for something with him.)

Quote:Originally posted by 6IXSTRINGJACK: Never thought I'd say it, but I think the raccoons did me a favor... It's too early for me to put my heat on around here, but I figured I'd better at least test that everything is working right today. I was in mid cycle where the blower starts going off when I came in from getting the mail, and I realize while going through it that I'm getting a LARGE amount of hot air being forced down directly on my head. The ceiling vent above the front door was putting out air about 50 times more powerful than it ever has since I've lived here. So I went around and realized that this is the only vent doing so, and the other 5 are hardly putting out anything by comparison (which is the output that it usually put out). I'm not sure if I mentioned the discovery I made when I had the racoon problem, but the reason I heard them against the vents so often, doing whatever it was they were doing, is because I don't actually have any legit duct work for that ceiling system. It's just one length of actual ducts, and from there are attached 6 insulated "snakes" that make their way to the various ceiling vents.
Quote: So without a way of blowing them out, I just went upstairs and wherever I could I knocked them around a bunch. I also took off all of the vent covers from the ceiling and made sure they were open fully inside and banged them around from there as well, careful not to get the dust all over myself. Whatja know? I've actually got some legit heat coming out of those vents for the first time in 8 years.
Quote: And it smells... I'm going to try going without heat for the next few days and turn the blower on all day when it's back up in the 60's with all of my windows open to get the shit out now that it's not blocked up anymore. I'm thinking part of this is the design of those vent covers as well as something just blocking the snakes. They are made to diffuse the heat to the sides, rather than shoot it straight down. Kinda dumb when heat rises. Also kind of dumb to willingly block up the heat so it doesn't all come out of the registers during a cycle and melts the snow off of my roof instead. I'm going to have to see if I can find better circular vent covers for my system, but in the mean time I'm leaving them off. It's amazing being able to put my hand a foot from the floor on the lower level and feel the heat hit it from above. It's actually too hot in my bathroom now. I'm going to have to close that vent off a bit. Do Right, Be Right. :)

It all seems mostly working now, and hasn't damaged anything existing, especially that precious stub! So I'd personally leave things as-is, unless/ until you get a professional who can do a 100% job with more knowledge/ better equipment/ and different parts. The only thing is, I'd throw a tarp over the hole to keep the rain out, but I'd leave it open otherwise for a while, to check and make sure neither fitting gets pressured-off.
Quote:CONGRATS!! I hope you're pleased with a job that seems to me well done!

Quote:Originally posted by SIGNYM: Nothing quite as much fun as digging in the dark and the mud, hunting for a crumbled rusty pipe that's welling water up. Had that happen more than once .... interestingly, the pipes all rusted about 9" down ... I figured that's about where there was both enough water in the soil, with enough oxygen penetrating from above, to really corrode those pipes! These were sprinkler system pipes, but we didn't even have a separate shutoff for them so we had to shut off the entire house. The scary part was that each time we tried to cap to pipe off, it crumbled. We had to keep digging deeper and deeper until we found a portion that was solid enough to put a cap on. Fortunately for you it looks like your pipe cracked instead of crumbled, so hopefully the hose clamps will stay on for a good long time!!!
Quote:Sounds like you had a nice visit; it's VERY good to get away once in a while because it's waaaay too easy to get stuck in a mental rut and get too narrow-focused!
Quote:****** Speaking of narrow-focus ... wow this sink repair is taking way too long. Hubby is a perfectionist, and when it's all done it will be the best-looking sink in the house, but I feel like we could have been done a day ago instead of having two more days of work! The hole under the sink has been patched with (basically) a two-piece plywood access panel. We had to cut out some concrete in order to seat the sink a little lower. Also, because the sink doesn't fit quite the same hubby is making a front panel to fit under the sink. Still need to cut about a dozen tiles so we can re-tile around the sink, and I need to get a P trap with a longer pipe coming out of the wall, and taller to reach the sink drain. But once THAT'S done I still need to install some curtain rods and brackets, hang curtains, and sort thru the office, livingroom and dear daughter's prized possessions. And clean. We have out of town guests coming in a few weeks and we need to put our place in some kind of order, and especially get the guest bathroom ready!!! And there are still a lot of weighty legal and financial things to take care of. It's sure not going to get done any timesoon. Maybe by the end of next month ...?

Quote:Originally posted by 1KIKI: Hey Brenda I do remember you talking about a gondola ride coming down and damaging the pier. Am I remembering correctly? Heavy wind is never a good thing. I've been through two serious wind storms - one here where the wind was gusting over 100mph (~170 kph if I calculated correctly). And every time it would gust, the sound would go from a deafening moan to an even louder deafening shriek, and I could hear the roof shingles rip off like they were being unzipped. So there's be an extended period of loud WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO with intermittent and even louder EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH-pop-pop-pop-pop-pop-pop-pop-pop-pop-pop-pop-pop-EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH ... WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO And it went on .all. .night. .long. The same thing happened in downtown Chicago one night, except instead of hearing roof shingles rip off, I heard glass crashing. I thought it was windows popping out of the tall buildings. I too do not like seriously windy weather. ETA: If it wasn't clear, I find violent windstorms deeply unnerving.
