Why do you feel the need to constantly lie, THUGGER?

And some things automatically sort themselves like clothes in a closet and clothes in a dresser.

OTOH you may or may not have a linen closet/ pantry/ built-in bookshelves/ desk/ in your new/ old place, so it makes no sense to me to be carefully organizing everything by one set of organization. Just put it all in boxes and sort it when you get there according to the rooms, closets and storage spaces in the new place. One family I know used the extra clothes and linens to pack the fragile stuff. :)

Rue, that's your sock puppet isn't it kiki. Oh no, nothing about gardens here. Oh well..

Not about anything, but my cat ... sigh. He got out AGAIN today. Fortunately I was able to round him up pretty quickly across the street before he scampered up the hill into the undeveloped wild part. I shook a bag of treats and he came sidling over. The last time he did this, I looked and looked. That wasn't the first time he got out, but every time before that I was able to retrieve him after an hour or 2. The last time I looked for 5 hours. I thought he was gone for good, irretrievably lost, or maybe quietly eaten, or hurt ... Then finally around 2AM I went to the internet and looked up 'how to find a lost cat' and that's where I found the 'bag of treats' tip. Yanno, go around with that bag of treats shaking it so they can hear the treats rattling inside. Which is how I got him back in the house at 2:30AM.

This neighborhood is NOT friendly to indoor / outdoor cats. Out of the 5 I had previous to Einstein (he's a ridiculously smart cat, he can open every single interior door in the house), 2 were eaten by coyotes, and one was run over by a car. As much as he wants to go o.u.t. it's not going to happen if I can help it.

He is HUGE. I'm 5'7" and when he stretches up to reach for my attention, his front paws come just below my chest. He sleeps in a dog bed and fills it. And he's STRONG. I mention this because he recently tore out a window screen. THIS time around, he pushed the damn window open before he hopped out through the previously torn screen. So now I have to keep it completely closed - AND LOCKED.

Also, I had $$ecurity $$creen doors put in because I knew for a fact he would just rip through a regular one.

I hope he appreciates all I go through for him! (Just kidding. He's a cat. But despite being feral with pretty much everyone else, he's deeply attached to me. So somewhere along the line, what I do counts for something with him.)

Shit, I can't get help but trip over posts by you that have nothing to do with gardens. Get the point yet comrade?

Finally got down into the crawl to clean it up today after doing nothing but sleeping yesterday. Kind of reversed which days I wanted to do it because of the weather, but it really didn't get that cold in my house despite it getting into the low 30's last night.

That being said, I only did half of it today. I think there's a limit these days to how much gross I can handle. I'm not using bleach either, so it's taking a lot longer to clean everything, although I didn't set my lungs on fire this time.

When I'm done, I'm going to spray that ortho safe-for-indoors stuff everywhere around the perimeter. Between that and all the spraying I've been doing outside, hopefully this will keep about 95% of any bugs that get into my house from that crawlspace, the bane of my assistance. That should also keep the visqueen down their cleaner for a much longer time. From across the place, it looks as though it got "dirty" with dirt, but upon closer inspection it would seem that it was just the spiders keeping the rif-raff out, and the debris that follows after around 4 or 5 years.

It's not sparkly white this time, but what I have finished still looks 1000% better than it did.

In the mean time, I've been checking the peremiter wood and nothing looks to be "munched" on by anything. There's also zero mold down there except for on the back of some insulation that was up against the drain pipe going out of the house. Not exactly sure what caused that, but I do know a few years after I cleaned it up down there last time the pump fell out of position and was spraying water everywhere. I'm going to have to cut that insulation out, replace it and monitor the situation going forward to see if it happens again.

Tomorrow and Monday still in the 50's. Tuesday in the mid 60's. After that it's a mix of mid 50's to damn near 70 for about a week then back into the 50's. Going to put my to-do list together for what I want done outside before it really gets cold. Hopefully my friend comes on Monday night and we can at least start putting the porch floor back in as well as a new screen door. Once we get that done I'm going to get serious about putting out my job apps and hopefully work out a deal somewhere to work weekends so I can keep working on my house full time too.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Never thought I'd say it, but I think the raccoons did me a favor...

It's too early for me to put my heat on around here, but I figured I'd better at least test that everything is working right today. I was in mid cycle where the blower starts going off when I came in from getting the mail, and I realize while going through it that I'm getting a LARGE amount of hot air being forced down directly on my head. The ceiling vent above the front door was putting out air about 50 times more powerful than it ever has since I've lived here.

So I went around and realized that this is the only vent doing so, and the other 5 are hardly putting out anything by comparison (which is the output that it usually put out).

I'm not sure if I mentioned the discovery I made when I had the racoon problem, but the reason I heard them against the vents so often, doing whatever it was they were doing, is because I don't actually have any legit duct work for that ceiling system. It's just one length of actual ducts, and from there are attached 6 insulated "snakes" that make their way to the various ceiling vents.

So without a way of blowing them out, I just went upstairs and wherever I could I knocked them around a bunch. I also took off all of the vent covers from the ceiling and made sure they were open fully inside and banged them around from there as well, careful not to get the dust all over myself.

Whatja know? I've actually got some legit heat coming out of those vents for the first time in 8 years.

And it smells... I'm going to try going without heat for the next few days and turn the blower on all day when it's back up in the 60's with all of my windows open to get the shit out now that it's not blocked up anymore.

I'm thinking part of this is the design of those vent covers as well as something just blocking the snakes. They are made to diffuse the heat to the sides, rather than shoot it straight down. Kinda dumb when heat rises. Also kind of dumb to willingly block up the heat so it doesn't all come out of the registers during a cycle and melts the snow off of my roof instead.

I'm going to have to see if I can find better circular vent covers for my system, but in the mean time I'm leaving them off. It's amazing being able to put my hand a foot from the floor on the lower level and feel the heat hit it from above. It's actually too hot in my bathroom now. I'm going to have to close that vent off a bit.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

What's next in the impeachment inquiry as Congress returns

WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress is returning from a two-week recess on Tuesday, but some lawmakers barely left Washington.
Three House committees investigating impeachment worked through the break, issuing multiple subpoenas and holding depositions with State Department officials relevant to the inquiry . Democrats are investigating President Donald Trump's dealings with Ukraine and exploring whether he compromised national security or abused his office by seeking dirt from a foreign country on a political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden, a leading Democratic contender for the 2020 White House nomination.
That work will intensify when Congress gets back. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi , D-Calif., has said she wants the committees to work "expeditiously" as Democrats gather evidence and prepare to make a final decision on whether to vote to impeach the president.

The impeachment probe was sparked by a whistleblower who revealed that Trump asked Ukraine's new president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, to investigate Biden's family and Ukraine's role of in the 2016 election that put Trump in office. The calls to investigate Joe Biden and son Hunter have come without evidence of wrongdoing by either Biden, in either country.

FLURRY OF SUBPOENAS AND DEPOSITIONS

Despite Trump's assertions that he won't cooperate, some members of his administration are participating anyway.
Staff and lawmakers from the House Intelligence Committee, the House Oversight and Reform Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee have called in several State Department witnesses.

They have already heard from two: Kurt Bolker, a former envoy to Ukraine, and Marie Yovanovitch , a former ambassador to Ukraine. Each provided information that could be used against Trump as Democrats contemplate impeachment.

Fiona Hill, a former White House adviser who focused on Russia, is expected to appear in private on Monday, with plans for Gordon Sondland , the U.S. ambassador to the European Union, to follow on Thursday. Sondland didn't show up for a scheduled deposition last week after the State Department directed him not to come, but his lawyer said he would comply with a subpoena issued by the committees afterward.

Democrats want to ask Sondland about text messages provided by Volker that show the two of them acting as intermediaries as Trump urged Ukraine to start the investigations.

Kremlin relishes US pullback from Syria, turmoil in Ukraine

MOSCOW (AP) — From Syria to Ukraine, new fault lines and tensions are offering the Kremlin fresh opportunities to expand its clout and advance its interests.

The U.S. military withdrawal from northern Syria before a Turkish offensive leaves Russia as the ultimate power broker, allowing it to help negotiate a potential agreement between Syrian President Bashar Assad and the Kurds who were abandoned by Washington.
And in Ukraine, where the new president saw his image dented by a U.S. impeachment inquiry, Russia may use the volatility to push for a deal that would secure its leverage over its western neighbor.

A journalist looks out of an hole on a house that was damaged by a mortar fired from inside Syria, on the Turkish town of Akcakale, southeaster, Turkey, on Oct. 12.

The Turkish offensive in northern Syria followed President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw U.S. forces from the area, cold shouldering the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, the key U.S. ally in the fight against the Islamic State group.
Washington's abrupt decision to ditch the Kurds contrasted sharply with Moscow's unwavering support for its ally Assad, which helped his government reclaim the bulk of the country's territory in a devastating civil war.
Along with military power, Russian President Vladimir Putin has relied on diplomacy to achieve his goals in Syria, reaching out to regional powers — from Iran to Saudi Arabia, Israel and Turkey.
NATO member Turkey has become a particularly important partner for Russia. Even though the two countries have backed opposite sides in the Syrian conflict, they have pooled efforts to negotiate a de-escalation zone in the Syrian province of Idlib and co-sponsor talks on forming a committee that would draft a new Syrian constitution.
The Russia-Turkey rapprochement came as Ankara's relations with Washington grew increasingly chilly and were further strained over Turkey's recent purchase of Russian air defense missiles.

Turkey's offensive in Syria, which has drawn harsh criticism from the U.S. and European Union, may now push Moscow and Ankara even closer.
"Russia wants to benefit from that operation, and one of the gains could be the strengthening of ties with Turkey," said Kirill Semenov of the Russian International Affairs Council. "The harsh response from Washington, the EU reaction, the threat of sanctions against Turkey all play into Moscow's hands by making Moscow and Ankara even closer."
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called Putin just before unleashing air strikes and an artillery barrage on Kurdish-controlled areas in Syria. Ankara charges that the Kurdish fighters in Syria are allied with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, which has led an insurgency against Turkey for 35 years.

While Russia has noted the need to respect Syria's territorial integrity, it also has emphasized Turkey's right to ensure its security — a benevolent stance contrasting with the harsh Western criticism of the Turkish offensive.
Russia has long urged the U.S.-allied Kurdish fighters in Syria to come back to Damascus' fold, an offer they may need to take more seriously now.
"We heard that both Syrian officials and representatives of Kurdish organizations expressed interest in Russia using its good relations with all parties to the process in arranging such talks," Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told reporters on Thursday. "We will see what we can do."
Lavrov also pointed at another Moscow goal — brokering a dialogue between Turkey and Assad's government, something Ankara has strongly rejected in the past.
"It would be good for Russia to bring Ankara and Damascus to the table and have Ankara acknowledge the legitimacy of the regime in Damascus, if not Assad himself," Semenov said.
In another power game, Russia hopes to see major gains in its long-running effort to retain leverage over its neighbor Ukraine, a former Soviet republic looking to align itself with the West. In 2014, Russia annexed Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula and threw its support behind a separatist insurgency in eastern Ukraine following the ouster of Ukraine's Moscow-friendly leader, moves that triggered bruising Western sanctions.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who was elected by a landslide in April, has vowed to end the fighting, which has killed more than 13,000. Early this month, Ukraine, Russia and the rebels signed a tentative agreement to hold local elections in the east, a deal Zelenskiy insists conforms to a 2015 peace accord that was brokered by France and Germany.
The agreement, however, has been criticized by some in Ukraine as "capitulation" to Moscow. On Monday, far-right and nationalist groups are staging a major rally in Kyiv to protest Zelenskiy's peace plan.
The Ukrainian president has been drawn into the political furor in the United States, where Democrats in Congress are conducting an impeachment inquiry triggered by his telephone conversation with Trump. In the July 25 call, Trump pushed him to open a corruption investigation into Democratic rival Joe Biden and his son. In the days before the call, Trump ordered a freeze on hundreds of millions of dollars in badly needed U.S. military aid. After a congressional uproar, the aid was released in September.
Zelenskiy has denied being pressured by Trump, but this past week he encouraged U.S. and Ukrainian prosecutors to discuss investigating a gas company linked to Biden's son, although no one has produced evidence of criminal wrongdoing by either Biden.
The White House's publication of a rough transcript of the call was embarrassing for the 41-year-old Ukrainian president because it showed him eager to please Trump and dismissive of European partners whose support he needs to end the conflict in the east. While Zelenskiy sought to play it down, it could help Russia by eroding support for Ukraine in Germany and France.
"France and Germany have grown tired of Ukraine and are too busy with their own problems, and their only goal is to close the issue of the war in the east by any means," said Vadim Karasev, head of the Institute of Global Strategies, an independent Kyiv-based think tank. "If Russia offers a compromise, Berlin and Paris will heave a sigh of relief. By publicly kicking (German Chancellor Angela) Merkel and (French President Emmanuel) Macron, Zelenskiy untied their hands and there is no more talk about their 'friendly support.'"
In June, France helped Russia's delegation restore its credentials at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, five years after it was stripped of voting rights following the annexation of Crimea. Macron has also spoken about the prospect of Russia's eventual return to the Group of Seven, from which it was purged after annexing Crimea.
"Russia is the main beneficiary of that situation," Karasev said. "Putin no longer has to prove that Ukraine is dangerous and toxic — Ukrainian and U.S. politicians have done the job for him. The Kremlin now just needs to wait until the Ukrainian apple falls into its lap, as the U.S., Germany and France all have got their share of toxic Ukrainian gifts and got poisoned."

EU's Antitrust Charge Against Gazprom: Another Putin Disaster

"The trashing of Russia’s most valuable economic asset adds to Putin’s growing list of major policy disasters. By attacking Ukraine, he has alienated the Ukrainian people for generations to come. By saber rattling beyond the borders of Ukraine, he has rejuvenated NATO and given it new purpose. Putin has succeeded in pushing traditional sympathizers in the European community, such as Germany’s foreign minister; they’ve decided that the danger he poses trumps their business interests. Instead of raising Russia’s prestige and national pride, he has turned the country into a pariah state with a tottering economy and declining living standards."

Cutthroats And Bandits': Volunteer's Stint With Ukraine Rebels Turns To Nightmare

When he joined the separatist insurgency in eastern Ukraine, Russian businessman Bondo Dorovskikh thought he would be fighting hordes of fascists bent on victimizing the local population.

The reality on the ground turned out to be quite different.

Instead of defending eastern Ukraine, Dorovskikh says he found himself stranded in the town of Alchevsk, where pro-Russian rebels controlling the area spent their days looting and drinking.

"In the morning the commander would get up and line up the insurgents for the roll-call, and in the evening there were another roll-call," he told RFE/RL. "The rest of the time the militants roamed around Alchevsk, pillaging, stealing scrap metal, removing metal gates and selling them to buy alcohol and cigarettes. Some of them would get drunk and fire at each other."

We have another case of history repeating itself in Russia today. Genocidal Russian leader Josef Stalin at first used the May 9th Victory Day celebrations of the defeat of Nazi Germany to create solidarity and patriotism, but after two years he decided the celebrations had served their purpose so he cancelled them. Current Russian president Vladimir Putin seems to be taking a page from his historical mentor Stalin as he is using Victory Day to whip up nationalist fervor as he attempts to rewrite history and paint a false picture that Russia is still fighting fascism, but this time it’s Europe and the U.S. who are out to subjugate Mother Russia.

U.S., other Western leaders snub Russia's Victory Day parade

A decade ago, when Russian President Vladimir Putin celebrated the 60th anniversary of defeating the Nazis in World War II, leaders of the United States, France and Germany attended the victory parade in Red Square.

As Putin prepares to mark the 70th anniversary, President Obama and other Western leaders are snubbing the event because of Russia's incursion into eastern Ukraine and its annexation of Crimea last year

70th Anniversary Of End Of World War II Marked By Fascism In Russia

"Reggie Yates is clearly fearless. The black British reporter traveled to Russia for the BBC to understand the recent rise of fascism. In addition to discovering a mini Comic-Con glorifying Putin, he was also harassed for being black at a nationalist march founded by the president and was calmly informed in one interview that the mixing of races is impure and leads to mutations. (Yates is mixed race.) The charming and buoyant reporter at first smiles through the absurdity, but the bigotry gets to be too much for him. His emotions begin to show on his face. Twice we see Yates abruptly end an interview and rush for the exit.

Xenophobia has been an upward trend in Russia even before recent tensions with the West. Yates gives us a stomach-turning glimpse of a montage of YouTube videos celebrating vicious attacks on immigrants, including a man sitting on a bench who is suddenly kicked in the face. He also interviews an immigrant who was randomly stabbed on the street only to have the doctor refuse to treat him because he was an immigrant."

Russian labor camp memorial group faces heavy pressure

"This is a way to pressure us and destroy us," he told The Associated Press by telephone.

A surge in state-sanctioned patriotism in Russia has been paired with an official effort to downplay any unsavory passages of Russia's recent past. Positive attitudes toward the Soviet Union's former repressive communist regime, and Soviet dictator Josef Stalin in particular, have increased under President Vladimir Putin's rule.

Historians say Soviet authorities sent about 15 million people to forced-labor camps, known as Gulags, between the 1930s and the 1950s.

Killer Flower Found in Dead Russian Whistleblower’s Stomach

Police in Britain thought Alexander Perepilichnyy, a whistleblower who fled Russia in fear of the Kremlin, had died of natural causes. Shock toxicology tests now reveal traces of an extremely rare poison.

Perepilichnyy was said to be one of the most crucial witnesses in a $200 million fraud case against Russian officials, police officers and the Russian mafia. American executive Bill Browder, head of the investment firm Hermitage Capital, employed lawyer Sergei Magnitsky to investigate how the Russian officials had targeted his company. Magnitsky, 37, was arrested in Russia and subsequently died in police custody.

Russian cancer patients keep killing themselves

government critics, researchers and advocates point to Russia's underdeveloped health care system, which they say lacks a comprehensive approach to caring for victims in advanced stages of the disease.

They also blame bureaucracy for preventing patients and their relatives from getting the painkillers they need to cope. A local investigative report recently detailed that exhausting process, which includes a series of tedious medical visits to several different locations.

Russians wounded and captured in Ukraine send messages to family back home as dispute brews

The men say they are Russian soldiers who were captured and wounded while on active duty in the rebellious east, Ukrainian authorities say they are definitive proof that Russia is at war in Ukraine, and Moscow hotly denies the claims.

Representatives of Amnesty International and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, which has shepherded a shaky cease-fire in eastern Ukraine, visited the men Tuesday and found them apparently in reasonable condition.

"I got professional medical aid, surgery. To my relatives, I want to say everything is fine with me, I'm alive and well," said one, who identified himself as Yevgeny Yerofeyev, a captain in the Russian army.

"I'm missing my family and relatives so much," the other, Sgt. Alexander Alexandrov, told reporters who accompanied the international representatives.

$1.8 billion disappears in Russian space program

"To add to the misery, Russia has lost two spacecraft in the last month. A crewless cargo space ship burned up in the Earth's atmosphere after a communication failure, and a Proton-M carrier rocket carrying a Mexican satellite crashed in Siberia.

Russia's deputy prime minister, Dmitry Rogozin, blamed the accident on chronic corruption in the space industry.

"With such a level of moral decay, one should not be surprised at the high accident rate," Rogozin, who is in charge of the aerospace sector, said in a statement."

Scathing Report Says Russia At War With Ukraine, Putin Lying

A
Washington-based think tank on international affairs has released a scathing report on Russia's "direct military intervention" in eastern Ukraine, concluding that President Vladimir Putin has led his country into war and has lied about it.

The report by the Atlantic Council also charges that Putin is using the decrease in hostilities that has followed a February cease-fire deal to reinforce Russian-backed rebels with troops and weaponry in order "to prepare for the next stage of fighting."

At the same time, the Atlantic Council researchers say "the Kremlin is building its case that forces engaged in any future outbreaks of fighting are indigenous, legitimate Ukrainian forces rather than Moscow's creation."

Ukraine’s Bloggers Hunt Down Russian Soldiers In War-Torn East

"Despite Moscow's insistence it has no troops in Ukraine, evidence of Russian involvement is mounting.

In March, NATO Deputy Secretary-General Alexander Vershbow told a conference in Latvia that "Russian leaders are less and less able to conceal the fact that Russian soldiers are fighting, and dying, in large numbers in eastern Ukraine."

This week, a Bloomberg report quoted U.S. lawmakers claiming that Russia was operating mobile crematoriums to secretly dispose of soldiers killed in eastern Ukraine.

And Washington think tank Atlantic Council this week issued a report citing"irrefutable evidence" that the conflict in eastern Ukraine is "a Kremlin-manufactured war -- fueled by Russian-made military equipment, fought by Russian soldiers, and supported by Mr. Putin."

Wuts going to happen to Russia over the next decade az the demand for oil evaporates?

Tesla just premiered an electric semi tractor truck that will make deezal trucks obsolete. Therez another new company, Nikola (hahaha!) getting in on that and an existing truck manufacturer will beat both uv them to market with an electric truck.

Then therez carz.

The new Tesla Roadster due out in 2019 beats EVERYTHING* that runz on fuel. Therez a Tesla imitator company running TV commercialz now. All the established manufacturerz are tranzitioning to electric.

*every production automobile, regardless uv prise. Top fuel dragsterz still hold the 1/4 mile recordz and the land speed record iz still held by jets.

On the other end uv the spectrum, there are the 'hoverboardz' and bunchez uv cheap toy scooterz. Theyve been out for yirz.

I think the last production passenjer carz powered by gas or deizal will be around 2025, 2030 the latest.

There will be a thriving industry for converting older carz to electric. Its alredy a relatively eazy project for peepl like me and it gets eazier all the time.

NASA is planning the first interstellar mission, a trip to the Alpha Centauri system

Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory are making preliminary plans for an interstellar mission, the agency's first. The team wants to send a probe to look for sings of life on the exoplanets surrounding Alpha Centauri, the closest star system to Earth.

According to New Scientist, which first revealed the news, the proposed launch is set for 2069 -- a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.

With a 44-year-long flight, the probe wouldn't reach its target until the next century.

Legitimate or not, that's how its done over here.

Quote:

So without a way of blowing them out, I just went upstairs and wherever I could I knocked them around a bunch. I also took off all of the vent covers from the ceiling and made sure they were open fully inside and banged them around from there as well, careful not to get the dust all over myself.

Whatja know? I've actually got some legit heat coming out of those vents for the first time in 8 years.

What do you suppose might have been blocking them? Nothing's supposed to get in there except fine dust.

Quote:

At least you have heat for the winter!

Still, it's a puzzle as to what might have happened up there. No rat or raccoon-sized holes in any of the flexible ducts?

I'm starting to get the feeling that Crook County, IL is just super anal about all sorts of codes. I'd never seen anything like this before, and my family is kind of in disbelief at it too. We all had legit ductwork to all of our vents in any house we lived in.

One of the houses that I was looking at down by my brother didn't have any conduit at all coming from the breaker box either, which in my mind was a deal breaker. It was just straight romex coming from the box to all the receptacles. When I told my step-dad about that, he said that their house that they owned down in AZ, which was very recently built, was the same. That's another thing I'd never heard about before this year.

I probably don't need to be so paranoid about code where I live either. Could be that the Chicagoland area is just crazy about that stuff compared to everyone else.

Quote:

What do you suppose might have been blocking them? Nothing's supposed to get in there except fine dust.

I really have no clue. It did smell when the heat was on though. I'm going to wait until it warms up next week to put it back on so I can have all the windows open and just turn the blower on all day to air it all out now.

Quote:

At least you have heat for the winter!

Still, it's a puzzle as to what might have happened up there. No rat or raccoon-sized holes in any of the flexible ducts?

Yer tellin me.

No holes in the flex ducts... at least from what I can see. I can't imagine that there would be now. The system is actually working right for the first time since I bought the house.

What I know now is that my return is large enough for the vents, which was always a concern when I didn't have good air flow before.

At the end of the season I changed the filter, which I hadn't done in a long time. Though the old one was in rough shape and it was stupid to let it go for however long I did, it wasn't the first time I'd changed it.

The amount of force coming out of all 6 vents now is insanely more powerful than it has ever been since I lived here. It's night and day.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Back in 1983, Ronald Reagan labeled the Soviet Union an "evil empire" during remarks before evangelical Christians in Florida. The president was warning about a buildup of Soviet strength and global menace, and the need to confront it.

History is now repeating itself. Today's Russia is a pale version of the communist regime that finally dissolved in 1991. But Russian President Vladimir Putin, famously embittered by that collapse, is bent on reacquiring some of that former glory.

Putin's Make Russia Great Again strategy is a font of international mayhem.
Russia invaded neighboring Georgia in 2008 and Ukraine in 2014, where fighting rages on and 10,000 have died. Its illegal annexation of Crimea was the first effort to alter European borders by force since World War II. The Russian military, dispatched to Syria, shored up the regime of Bashar Assad and committed atrocities, bombing a United Nations aid convoy and targeting hospitals.

High-confidence findings by the CIA, FBI and National Security Agency concluded that Putin ordered a cyber and propaganda attack to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election and undermine public faith in the American democratic process. Russian "trolls" posted false stories on Facebook that reached 140 million Americans, and Russian hackers stole thousands of emails from Democratic leaders and leaked them. Similar attacks have since occurred in Germany, France and the Netherlands.

Other Russian aggression includes selling weapons to the Taliban in Afghanistan and oil to North Korea. The Kremlin also provides sanctuary to a rogue's gallery of cyber criminals, dispatches fighter aircraft that harass U.S. military jets in Syria and NATO aircraft over the Baltic, and sends submarines to prowl suspiciously close to crucial Atlantic undersea cables carrying 97% of global communications. All the while, Putin works to rig upcoming Russian elections in his favor.

The Trump administration's response to this mounting threat has been schizophrenic. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson writes in The New York Times that the Trump administration has "no illusions" about a resurgent Russia. And a suddenly tougher line emerged last month with the welcome announcement that anti-tank weapons would be sold to the Ukrainian government for defense against Russian-backed rebels.

Even so, these steps run contrary to President Trump's tendency toward appeasing Putin. The administration has slow-walked implementation of tough, new sanctions against Russia passed overwhelmingly by Congress last summer. The sanctions are to finally go into effect this month.

And Trump has not convened a Cabinet-level meeting on Russian interference in the presidential campaign. "When will all the haters and fools out there realize that having a good relationship with Russia is a good thing," Trump tweeted in November.

Reagan famously urged listeners in 1983 "to beware the temptation ... to ignore the facts of history and the aggressive impulses of an evil empire." Thirty-five years later, those words are again worth heeding.

The Russia Left Behind

A journey through a heartland on the slow road to ruin.

A Modern Train, a Rotting City
A few times every day, the high-speed train between St. Petersburg and Moscow barrels through the threadbare town of Lyuban. When word gets out that the head of Russia’s state railway company — a close friend of President Vladimir V. Putin — is aboard, the station’s employees line up on the platform standing at attention, saluting Russia’s modernization for the seconds it takes the train to fly through. Whoosh.

But Vladimir G. Naperkovsky is not one of them. He watched with a cold, blue-eyed stare as the train passed the town where he was born, with its pitted roads and crumbling buildings. At 52, having shut down his small computer repair business, Mr. Naperkovsky is leaving for another region in Russia, hoping it is not too late to start a new life in a more prosperous place. The reasons are many, but his view boils down to this: “Gradually,” he said, explaining his view of Lyuban, “everything is rotting.”

U.S. Destroyer Docks in Ukraine Amid Rift With Russia

Trump sold $35M in real estate in 2017, mostly to secretive buyers
The U.S. Navy’s guided-missile destroyer Carney sailed into Ukrainian waters Monday in the third visit by a vessel of its kind to the tense Black Sea region since August.

The Arleigh Burke-class U.S.S. Carney docked in the port city of Odessa as part of an ongoing commitment by the U.S. military to show support for Ukraine, particularly in the face of Russian aggression. The former Soviet country has been locked into a prolonged standoff with Russia in its east and south.

In 2014, masked Russian troops seized Ukraine's southern Crimea peninsula shortly after protesters had ousted the pro-Russian government of Viktor Yanukovych in Kiev. Russian-armed forces in Ukraine’s eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk have also fought against Ukrainian government forces for over three years.

The U.S. Treasury Department is finishing its first official list of “oligarchs” close to President Vladimir Putin’s government, setting off a flurry of moves by wealthy Russians to shield their fortunes and reputations.

Some people who think they’re likely to land on the list have stress-tested the potential impact on their investments, two people with knowledge of the matter said. Others are liquidating holdings, according to their U.S. advisers.

Russian businessmen have approached former Treasury and State Department officials with experience in sanctions for help staying off the list, said Dan Fried, who previously worked at the State Department and said he turned down such offers. Some Russians sent proxies to Washington in an attempt to avoid lobbying disclosures, according to one person that was contacted.

Russia concerned by Turkish military operation in Syria, calls for restraint

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Moscow received the news about Turkish military engagement in Syria’s Afrin region with concern, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Saturday, calling on the sides to exercise restraint.

It said Russia was sticking to its position on solving the Syrian crisis which is based on safeguarding Syria’s territorial integrity and respecting its sovereignty.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday a military operation in Syria’s Kurdish-controlled Afrin region had begun after cross-border shelling by the Turkish army.

Putin: Grand deal now, or Syrian bust. Putin has to act now or Russia will implode.

In December 2017, Putin proudly stated to Russian servicemen in the western Syrian Hmeimim Air Base, “In just over two years, Russia’s armed forces and the Syrian army have defeated the most battle-hardened group of international terrorists.” It’s three months later, and Putin’s all-too-rosy December 2017 “mission accomplished” has melted in the February 2018 reality that the “mission has just started.” What’s worse is that when it comes to Iran, Putin has realized he created an Islamic Frankenstan that now threatens the very elements that brought Russia into the Syria war to begin with: To control Syria. Putin needs to cut a Grand Deal with Trump immediately, before Russian's Syria venture explodes in his face.

In the current state of Russian-American meltdown, how can such a Grand Deal be made? There is the Mueller probe, the Ukraine, sanctions, aggressive Russian military moves, NATO expansion. Where to start?

Putin has dug himself into a deep economic and strategic catastrophe. A recent article related that while an average salary in in Russia is now roughly $670 a month, Russia is paying its unofficial mercenaries in Syria $4,600 a month. The $670 Russian domestic wage in comparison with the $4,600 paid for being in the Syrian death warrant chasm is the ultimate indictment of Putin as a total failure, in domestic as well as international affairs. It is a symptom of the approaching total collapse and implosion of Russia. Putin is paying $4,600 a month to soldiers who will ignominiously and anonymously die in an undeclared international war with no real Russian strategic goal and domestically, Putin’s citizens can’t find a job in Mother-Russia for an eighth of the Syrian salary. This is a symptom of total system failure that Putin ignores at his own peril.

Where to start? Russia must take the first step and cede all of eastern Syria to the United States' Syrian allies. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Larov recently attacked the US for recent steps that he claimed "look more and more like a part of a course to create a quasi-state of sorts on a large chunk of Syrian territory. Autonomous, independent from Damascus governing bodies are being created in this territory, money keeps flowing there to keep them functional. Law enforcement, created there, is receiving weaponry.”

The F-35 could dismantle Russia's Su-57 'stealth' jet program without even firing a shot

Russia is struggling to fund its new Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jet, and have only ordered 12 of the jets while the US ramps up its sales and production of the F-35 — a direct competitor.

Specifically, the US and India have engaged in some preliminary talks about selling the F-35, when India was initially a key investor in the Su-57 project.

Russia's Su-57 is still in a theoretical stage with few airframes built and new engines and weapons integration sorely lacking, but the F-35 is ready to sell

U.N. Panel Links Russia to Potential War Crime in Syria

GENEVA — United Nations investigators have linked Russian forces to a possible war crime in Syria for the first time, reporting on Tuesday that a Russian plane was responsible for airstrikes on a market last year that killed scores of civilians.

The plane carried out a series of attacks in November on the town of Al Atarib, west of Aleppo, killing at least 84 people and injuring more than 150, the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on Syria said.

Mattis slams Russia, says Putin 'attempts to undermine America's moral authority'

Secretary of Defense James Mattis slammed Russia on Friday, saying Russian President Vladimir Putin "attempts to undermine America's moral authority" and "seeks to shatter NATO."

"He aims to diminish the appeal of the western democratic model and attempts to undermine America's moral authority, his actions are designed not to challenge our arms at this point but to undercut and compromise our belief in our ideals," Mattis said at a graduation ceremony for the US Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.

You're right though. It wasn't really irony at all considering the source. At this point we fully expect you to post things like this. If it were anybody else off the street though, the last sentence is ironic compared to the rest of the statement.

Putin’s Secret Police Prevent 2 Million From Leaving Russia

MOSCOW — Russia’s Federal Security Service, the FSB, is preventing millions of Russians from going abroad. Its own officers have been told “nevyezdnye” (no foreign travel), and earlier this year it announced stricter border controls for those who want to leave the country, citing the “changed geopolitical situation.”

Several million Russians currently are banned, specifically, from travel to the United States, and more than two million cannot leave the country at all. The number of Russian citizens on so-called “stop lists” and state employees obliged to stay put after signing secrecy agreements ia growing rapidly.
So is concern among Russian elite that a new Iron Curtain, reminiscent of travel restrictions during Soviet times, has begun to descend.

Washington Post

A solid decision on Russia — for a change

The Trump administration said Wednesday it would impose new sanctions against Russia as punishment for its use of a nerve agent in an attempt in March to assassinate British citizen and ex-Russian intelligence officer Sergei Skripal and his daughter.

The sanctions again highlighted the gap between President Trump’s conciliatory language toward Russia and the tough position taken by many in Congress and within the administration itself.

Trump, who has resisted congressional insistence on additional sanctions on Russia for election interference and other activities, appeared to have had little choice in the matter, however. Under a 1991 law, he was required to act once the administration determined Russian responsibility for a chemical or biological weapons attack.

A release from the State Department said that such determination had now been made by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo over the attack this spring in Salisbury, England — following a British government conclusion that the administration had said months ago it accepted.

One is tempted to see this as damage control after President Trump’s Helsinki performance and criticism over his lack of personal involvement in preventing midterm election interference. Alternatively, cynics might say this is an attempt to show special counsel Robert S. Mueller III that he’s really not in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s pocket.

Russian Federation warns of 'horrible conflict' if Georgia joins North Atlantic Treaty Organisation

Once again we call on Russian Federation to comply with the August 2008 ceasefire agreement and pull its forces out of Georgia, ' said Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway Ine Eriksen Soreide. Ten years ago, on their journey to Georgia, our leaders had stopped in Crimea, Ukraine. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia expressed concern over the security situation in the occupied territories and the deterioration of the human rights situation there. The two Baltic nations and Poland stressed that they are striving to make Georgia and Ukraine members of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Medvedev added that NATO's expansion is a threat to Russian Federation.

Anyone but Putin: Russians are starting to look for an alternative

It’s hard to lose an election when you control ballot access, the government bureaucracy, the courts, the media, and the votes of vast swathes of the population dependent on state support – and when you are personally endorsed by the supposedly admired national leader. Yet Vladimir Putin’s ruling United Russia party still managed to come out on the wrong end of last week’s gubernatorial election in Primorye region, Russia’s far eastern territory. With 98 percent of the ballots counted, the Kremlin-appointed incumbent was trailing the Communist Party candidate by 47 percent of the vote to 50 percent. The only trick left to the authorities was old-fashioned ballot-stuffing: the incumbent, Acting Gov. Andrei Tarasenko, was declared the winner after several dozen precincts gave him 100 percent of the vote on a 100-percent turnout in the final two hours of counting.

The real winner, a 37-year-old construction executive and regional legislator by the name of Andrei Ishchenko, has no major political achievements, no charisma and no proposals worthy of note. His personality, his politics and his party affiliation did not matter. He had only one advantage in the eyes of voters: He was running against the candidate Putin endorsed.

“Russians are slowly coming to the idea of ‘Anyone but United Russia,’” noted Boris Vishnevsky, an opposition lawmaker in the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly. “This is very similar to 1990, when it was ‘Anyone but the Communists.’ The mole of history digs slowly, but irrevocably.”

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

I got 2 separate important paperwork items done the day before yesterday, plus 1 not so important one, but it needed doing. Paperwork has always been a trial for me, because I always mess something up somewhere, no matter how hard I try. (The work-around I've come to is to ask for lots of help. Generally, my approach is to try and find someone on the phone or behind the counter and tell them I have no idea what I'm doing, so please point out to me what I should do, and where I should sign. For example, for one paperwork item I needed it notarized and to make sure it gets where it needs to go. So I spent a fair bit of time looking up what the UPS offers by way of tracking and signing. Here's the info. https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/503.htm#ep1238627 OMFingG, it looks like it was lifted from some 40CFR section. So, after getting the papers notarized ... where do I need to sign, what do I need to do? and could I have copies of everything please? and how much will that be? and can I have a receipt please? ... I went to the PO and said ... how can I track this and make sure it gets there, please? where do I need to sign, what do I need to do? and could I have copies ... ... ...) Having got those 3 things done, my background agita is reduced somewhat.

And yesterday I didn't have any coffee, so along with feeling more relaxed, I spent most of the day sleeping! I'm still working on that sleep problem, which has been with me since I was very little - way before kindergarten as I recall.

And I probably could have slept all day today too, but I have a nice big pitcher of delicious and strong home-made cold-brewed coffee ready to go.

Having got that paperwork done, my focus/push/motivation (mostly focus - lining up what needs doing first, second, third ...) to do my big projects - even if a little bit at a time by cycling though the many projects that need doing - has fallen somewhat. So today I'm going to 1) have coffee, and 2) putter.
Whatever little things I see that need doing, generally more like daily and weekly tasks, I'll putter on those. I expect my day to be productive! just not be moving ahead on my projects.

But as long as I'm getting things done, it's all good!

Finally did that *explicit* drain!!!!

I'm lucky it didn't ruin the house. It's been broken since back in my drinking days. I forgot about it from back then. But I re-discovered the problem last spring. Didn't do anything about it then. Didn't do anything about it all summer long. Haven't been able to get my friend over to even finish the floor yet, let alone help me with this.

So I just bit the bullet, scared the shit out of myself, and finished it today.

The big reveal...

After finally digging it out, this was the mess I was dealing with. It was never attached with anything. It's clearly a broken pipe, and I'm lucky that I at least had a nub against the house to work with and it didn't shear off right up against the house.

VERY large crack, with at least 1/8" to 1/4" offset. Once it erodes the dirt away, you can see the hole (which was at least 2 1/2 feet deep) fill up to the top with water and slowly sink once the sump pump stops. I couldn't tell you how many gallons were spilled out every time the pump went off (or how much actually went back into the pipe and out to the street), but my guess would be that I was left with at least 3 gallons of water right up against my house every time the pump went off. Maybe more...

So.....

Has anyone ever tried cutting through a cast iron pipe with a metal cutting sawzall blade? Me either. Not fun.

Now I had to take this cut off to the big box store to fit my new parts. (In the mean time, throuought all of this, I had to go into the crawlspace and use a cup to fill a 2 gallon bucket and dump it out into my toilet to the wastewater drain 4 times. It hasn't rained here in a week, but that's just the ground water around here... which is even heavier I'm sure because I never get it all out to the street).

And we're done.... (sort of)....

Tightened the shit out of them, while also taking care not to break the straps. I have a habit of applying too much torque to things.

Ran it through a few laundry load cycles to make the pump go off. It still leaks, but not too much. Maybe 1/16 of a cup maximum every time the sump pump goes off. Nothing more than a faint dampness around the seams while leaving a steady stream of the kitchen sink faucet for 10 minutes.

Would prefer if it didn't leak at all, of course, but we're not exactly working with new pipes here. The iron was rusted to hell on the outside and pretty oblong and impossible to seal up completely. But as long as nothing breaks here I can't imagine it's going to be pulling dirt down into itself anymore. It's 1000% better than it was before.

I'm going to see if my friend has any further suggestions when he comes to help finish the porch. If anybody here has any ideas, feel free to let me know.

Could be but with that rain also comes wind. Got a bit Thursday morning and there will be more.

Think I mentioned that we had a bad, bad wind storm up here last December that destroyed part of a pier. That pier was reopened over the summer after being repaired. The city used concrete then over the next year the rest of the pier will be replaced with concrete to prevent the rest of it from being destroyed.

WOW. Thank god for that stub you had.

You did what I would have done with a stub. Without would have been near impossible, I think! It all seems mostly working now, and hasn't damaged anything existing, especially that precious stub! So I'd personally leave things as-is, unless/ until you get a professional who can do a 100% job with more knowledge/ better equipment/ and different parts. The only thing is, I'd throw a tarp over the hole to keep the rain out, but I'd leave it open otherwise for a while, to check and make sure neither fitting gets pressured-off.

CONGRATS!! I hope you're pleased with a job that seems to me well done!

Hey Brenda

I do remember you talking about a gondola ride coming down and damaging the pier. Am I remembering correctly?

Heavy wind is never a good thing.

I've been through two serious wind storms - one here where the wind was gusting over 100mph (~170 kph if I calculated correctly). And every time it would gust, the sound would go from a deafening moan to an even louder deafening shriek, and I could hear the roof shingles rip off like they were being unzipped. So there's be an extended period of loud WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO with intermittent and even louder EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH-pop-pop-pop-pop-pop-pop-pop-pop-pop-pop-pop-pop-EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH ... WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

And it went on .all. .night. .long.

The same thing happened in downtown Chicago one night, except instead of hearing roof shingles rip off, I heard glass crashing. I thought it was windows popping out of the tall buildings.

I too do not like seriously windy weather.

ETA: If it wasn't clear, I find violent windstorms deeply unnerving.

Nothing quite as much fun as digging in the dark and the mud, hunting for a crumbled rusty pipe that's welling water up. Had that happen more than once .... interestingly, the pipes all rusted about 9" down ... I figured that's about where there was both enough water in the soil, with enough oxygen penetrating from above, to really corrode those pipes! These were sprinkler system pipes, but we didn't even have a separate shutoff for them so we had to shut off the entire house. The scary part was that each time we tried to cap to pipe off, it crumbled. We had to keep digging deeper and deeper until we found a portion that was solid enough to put a cap on.

Fortunately for you it looks like your pipe cracked instead of crumbled, so hopefully the hose clamps will stay on for a good long time!!!

Sounds like you had a nice visit; it's VERY good to get away once in a while because it's waaaay too easy to get stuck in a mental rut and get too narrow-focused!

******
Speaking of narrow-focus ... wow this sink repair is taking way too long. Hubby is a perfectionist, and when it's all done it will be the best-looking sink in the house, but I feel like we could have been done a day ago instead of having two more days of work!

The hole under the sink has been patched with (basically) a two-piece plywood access panel. We had to cut out some concrete in order to seat the sink a little lower. Also, because the sink doesn't fit quite the same hubby is making a front panel to fit under the sink. Still need to cut about a dozen tiles so we can re-tile around the sink, and I need to get a P trap with a longer pipe coming out of the wall, and taller to reach the sink drain. But once THAT'S done I still need to install some curtain rods and brackets, hang curtains, and sort thru the office, livingroom and dear daughter's prized possessions. And clean. We have out of town guests coming in a few weeks and we need to put our place in some kind of order, and especially get the guest bathroom ready!!!

And there are still a lot of weighty legal and financial things to take care of. It's sure not going to get done any timesoon. Maybe by the end of next month ...?

WOW. Thank god for that stub you had.

I know! Tell me about it.

I actually knew that nub existed back early this spring when I had dug a much tinier hole right up to the house to see what the problem was, and (laughably) tried making a stupid Macguyver style solution that failed miserably before I just filled it all back in (all of that dirt had since washed away and the hole was there again).

The thing is, until yesterday, I didn't even know what to do with the nub or how grateful I should have been that it existed in the first place.

Yes. I was going to find myself a piece of the old plywood flooring from the porch that I was using for various things and cut it down to size to fit over that until I cover it up. I'd like to make it through a few heavy rains and see how it behaves before covering it back up. I think the beauty part of this solution is that it should hold for at least a while, and even if the straps break I still don't think the amount of water leakage would be anywhere near what it was before since it would be the straps on the iron most likely to break and the rubber wedged on there so hard I can't see them moving at all. I also cut the pvc to the exact size, put the sleeves on the PVC, then forced them onto the iron from there, so there's not a ton of play in between for things to get all wonky.

And there's the fact that I still have over 4 feet of PVC pipe, and the rubber sleeves only cost $5 for a pair, so a future repair will not cost much unless something else goes catastrophically wrong.

CONGRATS!! I hope you're pleased with a job that seems to me well done!

Thanks.

Yeah. It ain't perfect, but should do the trick for at least a while. If it doesn't get any worse, the amount of water that stays is incidental and there would be more water in the ground just from the rain.

Youtube is a beautiful thing. Until I watched a pair of 5 minute DIY videos after I dug it up to see what I was looking at, I had absolutely no idea what I was going to do.

The only credit I'm willing to give myself here is taking that risk to cut the pipe which left me with zero options other than to figure it out and fix it (unless I wanted to spend rain cycles bailing out a few buckets of water every 5 minutes to keep up with the water) and actually making it through that drain pipe without taking a break or breaking a blade.

Yeah. I probably mentioned before that I hate plumbing. At least this water was all more or less clean water. That pipe looks really nasty, but after cutting through it you can tell by the cross section that there's plenty of legit metal still there. The pipe was strong, but the shifting because of the moles, ants, tree roots and lack of gutters must have caused the extremely heavy, decorative concrete borders to sink a little bit and pull the pipe down. (At least that's my theory right now. It is fortunate that the pipe nub at the house end was higher than the pipe going out to the street and not in reverse).

Sounds like you had a nice visit; it's VERY good to get away once in a while because it's waaaay too easy to get stuck in a mental rut and get too narrow-focused!

Yeah. Even though my friend bailed at the beginning of the week and said he would have been available when my dad was going down, I wanted to go this time since I couldn't make it last time. It's probably the last time I'll see my brother until he stays with me around Christmas time.

Go easy on him. You'll both be more pleased with the results that the extra time spent yield.

That's going to be my problem here. Being a perfectionist is all well and good when it's your house and you're not planning on moving. I want to fix her up and get out of here. But the amount of time it takes me to get anything done because of the perfectionism is going to make that take a very long time. I wish I could just fill stuff up the wrong way and slap paint on it like my friend does at his rental, but I follow the instructions for materials to the T and don't ever get as much stuff like outdoor painting done when there's a chance of rain nearly every day like there has been the last few summers in these parts.

Good luck with the financials. Got plenty of those around here, but I'm just getting really good at making the stuff I have hobble along until I can get the money together to start really taking care of them.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Hey KIKI.

Good memory but they are two separate incidents. The pier was last winter as I stated. Big wind and high waves during the day. Someone was caught on the pier and had to be airlifted back to dry land.

The Sea to Ski gondola had a major cable cut over the summer by some mutton heads but no one knows why they did it. It is still being repaired. Think the city of Squamish is hoping to have it reopened by next summer. Won't make the ski season. Squamish is going to loose some money this winter.

Wind storms can. We get a lot of them in the winter. The last bad one that did any damage was over 10years ago and tore up a seawall in a large park in Vancouver. Took 3 levels of government to rebuild it and get rid of all the downed trees and the trees that were teetering before some got hurt. Stanley Park is a huge tourist attraction at all times of the year as it is the largest green space in the lower mainland.

They don't bother me but I do worry for people who are out in them and worry about trees and power lines coming down.

Lots to do tomorrow. Gotta reregister to vote since I moved this Spring. Hopefully I have enough ID and such to be able to do that.

Hoping to pick up a Christmas tree as well and maybe get some other shopping down too.

Er ... you see, that IS the problem.

We may move to downsize, like you, and to a smaller city so that dear daughter inherits a place that she can maintain. And even if we stay, we were going to replace the whole vanity anyway because it's too low and was made from scrap wood and full of leaded paint, so there's no point in being so fussy.

In any case, hubby had a whole bunch of scrap wood from cabinets and a closet that we had taken down a few years ago because they were ugly, and I managed to persuade him to junk it all, so he cut up and I bundled the wood and took it to the curb. The garage looks so much bigger now!

Hey BRENDA, stay dry! I hope you get a reprieve from the rain soon!

If you can believe it, this late in the year we are looking at 90-95+ temps from now until Friday!

Hey SIG,

I am in and dry. No reprieve from the rain though. Thoroughly wet today.
