I am here and ready to go at 11PM Pacific time!

Brenda and Signy, if you care to join it's 11PM for you, too. The phrase is - trump impeachment progress - no quotes, plusses, minuses, site specifications or other search modifiers - searched on google, and your normal browser. And post your google search link here.

Okay... well. This is strange. Your link is only half the size of mine.

Unlike the warnings in the article I posted against posting your search results for others to see, I'm not seeing any words in the link other than the same words that you have.

Nope... scratch that. Toward the end of the first huge jumble of letters before the first equals sign, the word "source" appears.

I have a whole lot more random letters at the top of the link too before the equals sign before "trump" than you do.

I also have a ton of numbers compared to you after the "=psy-ab" part of the link as well, and unlike yours, part of mine look like they could be an IP address.

Then I've got about twice as many letters as you do at the end, with an extra equals sign and an extra period between them. I also have about six more periods than you do on my link after the "gws-wiz".

Weird... I have absolutely know clue what that means. I apologize that I can't share it, but I'm just paranoid like that.

But I did a comparison on what your link looked like compared to mine. Things to note:

1. All 3 of the "Top Stories" are identical between our results.
2. The first 9 results under that look to be identical.
3. Under that, you only have 1 "Ad", for a washingtontimes.com story "AP Explains: How the ground shifted on Trump impeachment". I have that Ad too.

4. The only difference I see between our results other than the link...

I've got two more ads on my page than you do. :) and/or :(

5. Both pages when opened in my browser show my general location at the very bottom (Good to know that we're not putting out our own location and broadcasting it to others when we share links!).

Kind of anti-climactic here... I'm guessing that you use different adblocking software than I do?

I should also note that I did the search within minutes of your post. It just took me a while to view the differences and write this reply.

In addition, conservative attorney George Conway, husband of Kellyanne Conway, called for Trump's impeachment. The Mueller Report was released on April 18, 2019, and Robert Mueller himself made follow-up comments on May 29. The report described ten actions by the president which could be construed as obstruction of justice.

So Jack and Signy - you might or might not have noticed that I edited my google search result url into this ...

https://www.google.com/search?ei=TxPiXdO7LbTS9AOY34OwCQ&q=trump+im
peachment+progress&oq=trump+impeachment+progress

... and the reason is I did some poking into the url.

I re-searched on the same words, and got a google link with an extended-length url. Then I started editing the link by chopping pieces off from the end pretty much at random points, in 3 steps, till I got to what seems to be the 'minimum' url. After each chop I then entered the shortened url into my browser, and compared that search result first page to the previous search result first page. All search result first pages were identical till I got to the minimum url which was what you now see above.

So whatever else google is recording into its very long string search result url isn't affecting the first page of the search results - but it's doing something else instead.

Mobile Heirloom Computing ... there is an Heirloom Computing that has created cloud storage, and since I was connected to the inet via wifi that might explain the "Mobile Heirloom Computing". HP? Hewlett-Packard? The rest of it might be my MAC address or a URL of the server I'm going thru, or both. I don't know enuf about computing and internet but if I get a chance I'll try to look it up.

BTW, my account here is tagged to an email addy and password that no longer exists as I have changed computers, ISPs, and email providers several times since, so PMing me won't work.

Yeah... weird. I try not to think about it too much. I don't even really bother with anything beyond ad blocker. If you're on the internet, people know exactly what you're doing. If it isn't Google, which it usually is, it's going to be somebody else.

Anyhow... highly agitating day here.

Nothing but problems with that new SSD. I might have just thrown 30 bucks in the trash on that purchase.

I cloned the old drive a 2nd time last night, this time doing the entire drive at once (which I accidentally didn't do the first time). This time it booted (although rather slowly because of the old USB technology it was running through).

Swapped it out for the old drive and get BIOS errors saying that there's no disk... or something about an error with the master disk. It's the strangest thing. The drive shows up on the main BIOS page, but you cant choose it as a drive to boot from. The BIOS on this old computer is extremely limited, so there were a few various things to try, but nothing I do gets it to recognize the drive.

So I tried to directly install a fresh version of Windows 10 on it from the disk. The Windows install recognizes the disk and will even show all of the partitions on it, but it will not allow you to install Windows on it and gives a generic error saying that the BIOS will not be able to load from this drive and to check the settings or contact the manufacturer.

I then downloaded the migration software from the company the drive is manufactured by. It won't recognize the drive with the USB connector I'm using and says that no drive by that company is attached. It is attached, and Disk Manager and Explorer can see it. I can copy files to it. The troublshooting for the program from the manufacturer says to try a different USB connector because some don't work with their drives. I'm not going to spend 10 bucks on one and wait 3 days only to find out I've just thrown more money away.

So... Back to the BIOS. There was an upgrade released around 2010 for it that my brother never installed. It actually makes several vague references to improving bootability, yada yada yada. Great. After searching for a few hours for it since the PC manufacturer doesn't even support the model anymore, I ran it.

But it won't work on my PC now because I'm using Windows 10 and it requires Windows Vista to run. Running the program in the various compatibility modes for Vista comes up with the same failure.

So.... What am I doing now?

I'm downloading a pirated DVD of Vista.

I'm going to flash it to a USB drive so I can install it from there because my spindle of DVDs is packed away from when I got rid of the hoard and apparently I didn't write which box it's in and I'm not going to dig through 6 possible boxes to find it.

Then I'm going to use another crappy old loose laptop hard drive to install vista to and burn another 90 minutes to 2 hours doing that... all so I can spend 2 minutes running a BIOS update that probably won't fix my problem.

What a pain in the ass. This drive is pretty much useless to me if I can't get it to work on this computer. It's too small for any legitimate storage, and really only is good for putting an OS on it and speeding up an aging computer. I suppose I could find an old computer online to buy that has good specs and doesn't come with a hard drive, but the Amazon deals on laptops right now are so good that I could just buy one that is way faster than this computer for about $150 that already comes with a small SSD inside of it, thus still rendering this drive useless to me.

I really like this computer. It's got a 20+" touchscreen monitor on it, and instead of needing a box for a desktop computer it's got all the innards right behind the screen. It's perfect for my coffee table right by the couch I sleep on. Even if I were to get a laptop that was 10 times the speed of this thing it would have such a small monitor by comparison.

I'm so pissed right now.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I guess the good news is that this will mainly affect central and NoCal, and will hit the Sierras, where most of SoCal piped water originates. We'll just get a sprinkle. The bad news is it's warm and it'll melt whatever snow pack is there, which means a decreased water reservoir.

If I can remember the website I went to back when we had that massive flooding around here, I'll give you the link. It had up-to-date precipitation nationwide, and you could click around different areas to get the actual rainfall for at least the previous 72 hours.

I'm finally installing Windows Vista.

What a nightmare. I had three old laptop hard drives. Two of them were formatted with GPT which this computer can't use, but to be able to find that out I had to go through a near 15 minute process of loading the Vista install to the point where I can select a disk for install. Then I had to connect those two to another computer and re-initialize them properly win Disk Management. I did both because it looks like the larger one probably has some massive failures on it. (I think I got both of them in a huge bag full of various computer cables and other crap my brother gave me years ago. Turned out the 3rd drive was MBR so I could have installed on there, but there looks to be a good Windows 10 install on there with some files I don't want to delete on it. I think that was the one that was in the laptop I got from my grandma after she passed, but it broke about a year later.

So... virtually a whole day of nothing going on around here. It will all have been worth it if a BIOS update makes the computer read the drive, but I'm not hopeful of that at all. Really, at this point, all I'm hoping is that something doesn't go terribly wrong during the update and brick the computer altogether. With zero support from the manufacturer these days, that will probably be the end of that.

It's been a long time since I ran into issues like this. Using severely outdated technology with new stuff... Never a good time.

Uggggghhhh....

I think I'm going to have to write it off. The BIOS update was a success and the new version shows up when I boot the PC, but I don't get any new options and the drive still won't work. Apparently, it was just some behind the scenes stability updates, but nothing that will help my drive situation. Better than I have it installed finally than not, I guess.

I've got one or two more things to try, but I don't think they're going to work. After that, I'm just going to have to write it off.

Good news though, is with the new fan and new thermal paste, the temps on the benchmark programs are showing between 50 and 54 Celsius now. They were in the high sixties all the way up to 80 when the old fan was rattling around in there.

I'll have to figure out something else to do with the drive. It only cost me 30 bucks, but I hate wasting money like that.

By all means... If he's got a solution, I'm all ears.

Currently, I have it cloning for a 3rd time using another highly rated free cloning software. I think I'm just wasting my time though. The BIOS has never fully recognized it as a bootable drive and always says "Master Drive Error" and won't boot at all unless I have bootable media in another connected drive.

I've read that mobos that date pre 2008 are pretty hit or miss, although I only read one single person say that. I honestly think that I'm a novelty here. Not that I'm the first one who's tried it, but I'm probably in a very small minority of people who have spent this much time and research on it without just throwing the damn thing out and buying something new.

The good news is, the laptop my old man told me about is a POS that I'd never actually spend money on. These $150 laptops they're selling for Cyber Monday have tiny screens that aren't HD or really any better than the touchscreen I have, they don't have any more memory than the computer that I have, and I can't even put my 256GB SSD into them since they use that new "hard drive on a stick" SSD technology and they're only rocking somewhere around 32GB, which isn't even enough to put a legit Windows 10 install on. It comes with Windows 10 S which is an EXTREMELY limited version of Windows that would drive me nuts.

(Although, with USB 3.0 tech and my SATA 3 SSD, it is possible that I could install a Windows-On-The-Go installation on the external and it would be almost as fast as the crappy small one inside.)

Even with the old drive in my current computer, I'm still better off keeping this thing for as long as it would work.

But hey, if your husband knows a trick that I'm missing, I'd sure love to have that SSD working in there. :)

Grrrrrrr.....

The new program copied the active partition, then finished copying over 99% of the system partition overnight while I slept only to fail with a generic "error 9" code that references "signature". That put me down a wild goose chase of a path where I thought this might have to do with the drive not being able to correctly put together some important system files.

I was thinking this because before I wiped it after the first install I was using DISKPART to run some commands to make a bootload partition and copy the windows files over and one of the commands (which I can't remember off hand now) gave me an error saying that the action couldn't be completed (which I also can't remember now).

I don't think that's it though... If this were the case, it would probably be the Active partition that would have failed. Although the system partition has the Windows install on it, there's nothing on it except for "dumb" data. It's not part of the boot loading process.

I'm currently using a 3rd program to try it again.

There's really just too many variables here.

I've got a PC that is somewhere in the realm of 13 to 14 years old, with a BIOS upgrade that is 10 years old on it.

I've got a SATA to USB connection cable that is a hybrid of two old products. I've used it as-is before to get data off of old hard drives before I got rid of my hoard, but I never built any system disks with it. This setup is the one that I tried using yesterday when I attempted to use the manufacturer's migration software and it couldn't recognize its own drive on my system.

The other problem with this thing is that these SATA SSD drives don't require external power to operate and could just run with a direct USB connection. This hybrid cable solution I'm using requires me to power it through the wall outlet, potentially putting additional wear and tear on my drive.

I might have to consider that the drive itself isn't good. It's not completely bad, since I can copy files onto and off of it and Windows recognizes it as a legit hard drive. I was also able to boot Windows into safe mode from the USB after the second clone attempt, which is further than I was even able to get with the original laptop hard drive that I'm trying to clone.

Though SSD is aging technology now, particularly the Hard-Drive-Shaped variety, it's all new to me. I'm still thinking in terms of mechanical parts when that's what we're not dealing with here. If an HDD dies, it's dead. Maybe if something goes critically wrong with an SDD it can still do a lot of what it's supposed to do without you otherwise being the wiser? If I were using this thing only as a means of additional storage, I wouldn't even have noticed it doesn't play nice with my current setup.

I have an idea of what to do with it now, at least temporarily. My router allows for a USB connection to a drive to have a network share. I currently have a 65GB stick in there. This would be 4 times the size on the network share and (theoretically) much faster at the job. That would depend on the router having USB3.0 tech though, and I haven't checked to see if that was the case.

I've got about 10 hours to decide if I want to buy a case for it for $9 if I want to have it shipped to my house on Tuesday. I was considering just buying a straight up SATA to USB cable for it to try again, but they're on sale for around $6. If I buy this extremly highly rated case that supports SATA III SSD drives, regular mechanical SATA drives and USB3.0 transport while also being backward compatible to USB1.0, it should cover all of my bases and do everything that the cable itself would have done, while also giving me a nice case for the drive. Even if I somehow get the thing working right, I do have an old laptop hard drive that is in great health which is 320GB in size which still gives me a decent extra external drive for storage and backups in the future.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Well... the third cloning program didn't magically make the drive work.

I do have all the correct data back on it now though. I'm going to do a few things that I've learned about and see if I can manually make any changes that stick through Windows Recovery.

My last attempt will be trying to create a "Windows-on-the-Go" installation through a USB drive, which I already know the computer has no problems initiating. From what I've read, it may be possible to "trick" the computer into booting up Windows from an active partition on a thumb drive that then points to all of the data on the SSD when it finally passes the BIOS. This process was developed by somebody who needed the benefits that UEFI/GPT grant you in terms of storage size for large drives, but was using a system which only allowed for a Legacy BIOS/MBR setup. Although UEFI/GPT isn't even an option on my computer and storage sizes aren't an issue for me, his solution might just work for my needs.

The only downside is that I always have to have one of my USB ports tied up because the system won't even be able to boot unless it's in there. If it works I'm also going to have to tie up two of my sticks for the life of the computer as well because I'm damn sure going to make a copy of it if I now need to start my computer with an ignition key.

Quote:

What is the revenue generation model for DuckDuckGo?
Gabriel Weinberg, CEO & Founder at DuckDuckGo.com (2008-present)

DuckDuckGo has been a profitable company since 2014 without storing or sharing any personal information on people using our search engine. As we like to say, what you search on DuckDuckGo is private, even from us! We’re proud to have a business model for a web-based business that’s profitable without making your personal information the product. I’m happy to tell you all about how we make it work (and how other companies can, too).

Though first, if you’re not familiar with DuckDuckGo, we are an Internet privacy company that empowers you to seamlessly take control of your personal information online, without any tradeoffs. We operate a search engine alternative to Google at http://duckduckgo.com, and offer additional apps and extensions to protect you from Google, Facebook and other trackers, no matter where you go on the Internet.

The Big Myth

It’s actually a big myth that search engines need to track your personal search history to make money or deliver quality search results. Almost all of the money search engines make (including Google) is based on the keywords you type in, without knowing anything about you, including your search history or the seemingly endless amounts of additional data points they have collected about registered and non-registered users alike.

In fact, search advertisers buy search ads by bidding on keywords, not people. It makes intuitive sense, too. If you search for ‘car’, you are more likely to respond to a car ad than something you searched for last week.

This keyword-based advertising is our primary business model. When you search on DuckDuckGo, we can show you an ad based on the keywords you type in. That’s it. And it works. Our privacy policy, in a nutshell, is to not collect or share any personal information at all. Every time you search on DuckDuckGo it is as if you were there for the first time – anonymous.

For example, if you type in ‘dishwasher’ you will get a dishwasher ad.

Google also makes most of their money via this same type of keyword-based advertising that doesn’t require any search-history tracking.

So why do they track it all then? Because Google is not really a search company; they are an advertising company. On Google, your searches are tracked, mined, and packaged up into a data profile for advertisers to follow you around the Internet through intrusive and annoying ever-present banner ads, using Google’s massive ad networks, embedded across millions of sites and apps.

This is why if you search for something on Google, you may start seeing ads for it everywhere.

No kidding. I shopped for shoes and then got shoe ads on FFF.net

Google, Facebook, and The Creepy Line

Eric Schmidt, former Google CEO and Chairman, famously said “Google’s policy on a lot of these things is to get right up to the creepy line, but not cross it.” But for most people, that line was crossed by Google, Facebook, and others long ago.

Alarmingly, Google now deploys hidden trackers on 76% of websites across the web to monitor your behavior and Facebook has hidden trackers on about 25% of websites, according to the Princeton Web Transparency & Accountability Project. It is likely that Google and/or Facebook are watching you on most sites you visit, in addition to tracking you when using their products.

Which is why I allow google but not its other scripts, which show up in almost every website that I've visited so far.

Took a break from my computer stuff to go and pick up some of that paint that was on a three day sale that I had planned on using my prior rebates to purchase before I ended up burning them up on the other stuff I damn near got for free.

I needed to buy a gallon of enamel for the trim, and it wasn't on sale, but rather than make my job 10 times harder by painting it after it's already installed just to save 10 or 15 bucks, I resigned myself to it.

So... 5 gallons of paint with $40 bucks back on it. Not very good. Only about 25-30% off this time.

We can do better than that.

I picked up 6 things that were 100% free after the rebates. I've got enough spare roller sleeves and brushes to paint my entire house inside and out now for 55 bucks but I'll get all of that back, bringing today's haul somewhere 50% or more off retail.

Hrmmmmmmm...

Yeah. Dunno if the idea to make a set of keys to start my computer is going to work. It would be fine for the purposes of what the guy who designed it to do needed, but my problem is that my BIOS simply can't boot from the drive at all. It's as if the BIOS knows that it is attached, but beyond being able to read the serial number and run a SMART test on it, it doesn't know what to do with it.

Using a BCDEDIT command, I was able to verify that my boot manager setups that I put on both a thumb drive and an SD card are correctly pointing to "D:\Windows\System32\winlogin.exe" (or whichever "win" file it is supposed to... I think that's it).

But it seems that beyond realizing that this is a hard disk, the BIOS on this old motherboard doesn't know how to recognize any file systems or partitions at it at all, no matter if I use the new GPT file system or the old MBR file system.

I think the reason that I'm able to use it as a spare external thumb drive and even boot to Safe Mode in Windows when it's attached to the USB is because the USB drivers are are a lot "smarter" and versatile when it comes to handling newer technology than whatever old SATA capabilities the mobo has (I'm assuming the drivers are only SATA I, and could not handle SSD drives that utilize SATA II or III).

So... to make an analogy of it... It's like I cut myself two spare remote entry keys, but without my GPS they're not going to do me any good since I have no idea where I parked my car.

The only way to turn the GPS on with this computer seems to either be by using an extremely old and outdated mechanical hard drive, or to feed it through a slow USB2.0 bottleneck that would probably be even slower than using the old hard drive directly connected to the SATA I on the mobo.

Oh well...

From what I read, I wasn't going to be getting the blazing fast speeds that a SATA III SSD drive is capable of with the SATA I system in place anyhow. It probably would have been faster than what I'm working with, but I was never going to see a 5 second boot to Windows with it.

Alright. For real. Giving up now.

I learned a lot. I can initialize, format, and resize and change the tables from MBR to GPT without losing data on a command line level now, as well as do a lot of diagnostics I didn't know how to do before. Switching from GPT back to MBR without data loss is dependent on 3rd party software, but is still easy to do.

Pretty sure that there's no fix for this though unless I learned how to hack the BIOS. That's never going to happen... I'm sure nobody else has bothered hacking that very specific BIOS before, so there would be no roadmap for me to even begin, and the amount of time it would take me to learn and to do it would be enough for me to replace that computer at least 10 times over just working minimum wage.

Going to order that case and see if the software from the manufacturer works on it and yields any better results. Very doubtful, but I'll just use the drive for network storage attached to the router if that's the case. If anybody is getting rid of a laptop in the future that was made after 2010, I'll be able to use that drive to make it much faster.

The computer works really well now anyway with the new fan in there. It's almost silent and the performance is loads better. One thing I will do in the next day or two before closing it back up is clone the drive to the larger and newer laptop drive from my grandmas old laptop that doesn't have any SMART errors. The drive I'm using doesn't even mention if it's 5,400RPM or not. It might not even be that fast. I might eek more speed out of this thing just from having the newer mechanical drive in there.

If I want to replace it with a similar unit in the future, I found out that I can order one with twice the power and speed for only $400 to $600. If I ever win the lotto, I could dump $2000 on one that would blow away anything I've ever owned.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Well, this is probably not what you're talking about but, don't you have the option (perhaps F2) to get into the BIOS on boot-up? If it would take too long to tell me why not, just say no - it doesn't work that way. HA hA!

Nah... I'm way beyond that.

F2 (or F10 in my case) gets you to the BIOS. ESC in my case loads the boot manager where you can choose what drive to boot from one single time instead of saving a permanent boot order in BIOS.

The problem is, that old computer has one of the simplest BIOS out there, even for its time, and it's extremely out of date in 2019. The newer desktop I put together around 6 or 7 years ago has an actual GUI that loads when you do it with buttons that you can click with your mouse and about 100 times more options including all sorts of overclocking settings that can be applied. The one on this touch screen computer looks like Word Perfect from the early 90's.

That's why I installed Vista on a separate drive to install the only upgrade to the BIOS, but whatever updates were applied in that version didn't fix my problem or offer me any new options in the menus.

My newer computer is loading UEFI and not BIOS. The differences are not small. I'd let myself fall so far behind in tech that I wasn't aware of that until now. Honestly, until this SSD, I never was using anything in my PC's that were a problem. The largest HDD that I ever used internally was only 2TB, which is the limit on what size drive BIOS can boot. I would have figured all of this out earlier if I had ever sprung for a 3 or 4 TB drive years back and was only getting 2.1TB to use after putting all that money down (these were prohibitively expensive for ANYBODY back when desktops were still regularly using BIOS).

Here's a good article on it:

https://www.howtogeek.com/56958/htg-explains-how-uefi-will-replace-the
-bios
/

So... long story somewhat short, I'm glad I put myself in the position of trying to mix old technology with new technology again. It's always a good way of getting me up to speed with what is out there today.

I think rather than saying that "my" BIOS can't load this drive, it might be more accurate to say that this drive can't be loaded by ANY BIOS, and requires UEFI to boot.

I won't be 100% certain of that until the enclosure comes in and I can try using the manufacturer's software to clone the drive one last time. It may be possible that no matter how I attach the drive the manufacturer's software won't recognize the drive unless you're using a computer with UEFI. In that case, they probably don't even mention that tidbit because chances are pretty low that many people would do it, and like the article says, most manufacturers have continued to call the UEFI the BIOS to avoid confusion.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Oh... and it seems there was a marking on the old HDD that had some yellow alerts in SMART. It's only 4200RPM.

I haven't been able to look what the newer one is since I put it upside down before starting the cloning procedure last night, but I'll either see if I can find markings on it or just look up the drive on Google and get the specs. There's an extremely high chance that it's at least 5400RPM or possibly even 7200RPM.

That will give me a speed boost right there.

Plus, I was looking into ways to add speed by using an SD card as memory. Today this is hardly ever used because SDD drives are far faster at doing all of this than any SD or USB attachment could ever be, but along with Microsoft's own ReadyBoost technology, there are a few 3rd party programs that will attempt to use this flash media as an intermediary between the HDD and the computers actual memory.

With only 4GB available to me and no way to add any more, I just might get another 10% performance increase by doing this with an old SD card I don't really have any other use for. SD is perfect for this too because I won't be taking up a valuable USB slot with it, and I've been known to knock them out while putting a new one in or taking one out. This PC put them really close together in a spot that isn't exactly easy to get to with my big dumb fingers.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Snow didn't stay and we have rain again where I am.

Weather bad in the eastern US and Canada. Snow and icy rain making travel hazardous. There was a 30 car pile up outside Kingston Ontario because of heavy snow and such.

Hey thanks Jack. I did look stuff up to get a flavor.

Personally I don't think BIOS was so broken it couldn't be fixed. And as I've read it looks to me like UEFI is a backdoor onto any system, because, supposedly, one can control a system from UEFI even without an OS (except Linux, which passes control on to the system only AFTER a Linux log-in).

Too much to think about. Brain goes ... boink.

Hey Brenda

I don't know about now, but years back the only drivers who were more aggressive than the ones in Los Angeles were the ones in Ontario!

As polite as they are, the driving was like .... insane. I still see in my minds eye a highway with every lane chock-a-block full of cars going 75mph bumper to bumper. It was THE worst driving experience of my life! All these years later I still get the heebie-jeebies thinking about driving there!

Well... I really don't know enough about it to have a very strong opinion. You're always going to open yourself up to potential hacking, whether you are behind the times with the tech or you're always up to date.

What is amazing when you think about it is that the UEFI that comes standard on most builds today is 16MB. That's eight times as large as the actual RAM I had in my first computer in the mid 90's that couldn't even run DOOM unless you bypassed Windows 3.1, and even then you'd only get the music and it wasn't enough memory to play the sound effects.

Essentially, I wasn't wrong in still thinking of the new UEFI as BIOS. Even the wikipedia article on it refers to it as the UEFI BIOS. I mean, it is the same thing in regards to the fact that it doesn't matter what OS you use, you're not going to be able to start it if you don't have one or the other.

I just have to laugh at how outdated my stuff is today. It's one thing to shun smartphones, but for about 15 years there I was building a new PC every 2 to 3 years tops. But these days I really don't have the need for the latest and greatest since I don't do any PC gaming, and the technology that's been around for the last 10 years (mostly) does everything I would ever need it to.

In the mean time, I'm here dicking around with an SSD/SATA drive that's too new for my current rig and hard drive SSD media is already outdated itself. It's pretty awesome that "harddrives" of the future are essentially going to be just chips socketed into your mobo like you would a stick of RAM. I can only imagine how impressed I would be by a state of the art rig today.

Down the road, with my project, I want to really get into some HD video creation. That's going to take a lot more resources than are at my disposal right now. I technically could do it, but with the volume of stuff I want to get done it would take me a million years with my current tech. But for emails, paying bills, youtube, streaming and just general web browsing, what I have now is fine. I just wish the touchscreen computer was a little bit faster is all. The desktop I have has a huge 100% aluminum case that seemed like a good idea years ago, but it's not very practical and I've got it tucked away in a room I don't use that often and it doesn't get a ton of use.

But like I said, if I want to spring around $600 or so in the future I can really get a nice upgrade to this thing that would allow for a SSD drive and it will be so fast compared to what I'm used to that I'd be thrilled with it. And the beauty of technology is the longer I wait the better the deal gets.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

The cloned HD booted up without issue. But everything seems sluggish... I wonder why that would be? The new drive is 5400RPM, compared to the 4200RPM of the old drive. I've run a bunch of programs that were installed and everything starts, so it seems that the copy went off without a hitch.

One thing I did notice is that explorer seems somewhat unstable after the cloning. Twice now I had to kill the Explorer process when it hung after right clicking on a USB drive I was checking. Task Manager also shows anywhere from 90 to 100% Disk usage when the sluggishness happens, so the bottleneck is the drive itself it seems.

Now that I have my old drive in a protective case, I'm making a disk image of the setup to revert back to in the future. First I'm going to try to do a Windows Restart and see if that fixes it. If not, I might have to bite the bullet and just do a fresh install and then go through the arduous process of re-installing everything from scratch.

This might be a huge issue whenever I get back to one of my big projects, as I don't know how much of the program install handled various settings and how much work I did would be lost. But I feel safe doing it now since I have the old drive to revert back to as well as an ISO image of the current drive to clone to another drive at a later date.

Nothing to do with anything, but I've never seen a swarm of termites until today. It was in the parking lot of the restaurant where I go for coffee, near where they took down all the dead and partially lead liquidambar trees a few months back (along with the stump grinding that seemed to remove all traces, except for ...). There was one fairly hefty branch - maybe 5" at the widest - that fell on the other side of the fence - technically on the railroad right-of-way - that wasn't removed. Perhaps that was the source.

That double-winged fluttering they have looks pretty unique. Within a roughly 15' globe, there were maybe 6+ at any time. It was very visible as a swarm.

And, is it termite swarming season - again? still? now?

OK - here's an answer: https://www.orkin.com/locations/california-ca/termites

"Generally, termites swarm on a warm day after a rainfall." That would be now. It's the first day it hasn't been really cold here since it rained. "The western subterranean termite swarms during the day in the local rainy season in autumn, winter or early spring.
The arid-land subterranean termite typically swarms in the daylight in spring and fall.
...
In southern California, the western drywood termite swarms during the day any time between September and November. It may swarm earlier in northern parts of the state." Well, it looks like it could be any 1 of the 3.

You sure they were termites and not carpenter ants?

Pretty hard to tell just by looking at them unless you're really up close. I had figured out they were ants in my porch because of the holes they made and the fact that there was shavings around them and not "mud", which is really their crap and spit.

Bad news either way, but termites are worse because they'll eat any wood and the carpenter ants only burrow into compromised wood.

Pretty sure. Carpenter ants have 2 wings on each side, but that tail-ward small extra wing eventually beats with the main wing.

Termites have 2 rather large wings on each side that always stay separated, it gives them an extra 'fluttery' appearance.

They were moving between sun and shade, so I had a good chance to look at them in the sun. And they were big, so their appearance was easy to see.

I don't Kiki. I've never been driven around in Ontario. I do that people on the Lower Mainland of BC don't know how to drive in the snow. But since we haven't gotten any yet. So far, so good.

I remember you don't like snow, Brenda. But I don't remember, or I never knew, if you always get at least some snow accumulation every year, or if it takes an exceptionally bad year for that.

Anyway - I hope the snow holds off for a long time after that dusting! And no accumulation!

Hehe...

Yeah. Can't say I get a magnifying glass view and 3,000 frames per second when I'm looking at a swarm of them in real life.

I saw a few of them around my house this year. No swarms or anything. Just a stray large ant-looking thing with wings or two. The only way I was able to verify they were ants was by catching them and getting an up close look.

I "think" I've figured out most of the ins and outs of that project I had on the PC. I'm doing some deep diving into it that I never would have attempted to do before it was backed up for fear that I'd jack up something and possibly ruin hundreds of hours of work.

I can't complain too much about the program that I'm using since the guy who developed it did all the work for free, but the way it handles where files and configurations are all over the map. Probably made worse because it was originally created back in the Windows XP days and though it has been updated and still works in 10, it still behaves as if it were a relic from the past.

I've really got to plan out how to properly re-install everything when I get a new OS on there. I'm going to make extremely detailed instructions for it, and assuming they work and I don't have to revert back to an old build, I'll make sure I've got that backed up in a few places as well.

Damn it's cold. Probably won't see another warm day around here till the end of April.

Man.... You really don't realize how many files get saved all over your hard drive until you're preparing for a wipe. Especially when you have multiple profiles on a PC. Now I remember why I had so many... The original profile I was doing the work on became highly unstable, but I was able to manage to make a new one that fixed the problem, then I went ahead and made a few more in case... that I never used. Boy, that first one likes to flake out. Fortunately I can get to everything I need on it from a more stable profile.

I'm going to go ahead and do the full CHKDSK treatment and really make sure this drive is ready before I go through with it. No sense doing all of this work and installing it on a drive I didn't correctly repair just to have problems out of the gates just for the sake of saving 12 hours. I've just got to manage to get everything else I need done and then let that work overnight.

Oh... cool. They have a program called Driver Backup that will let you back them all up and choose to only use the ones you need when it re-installs. I don't have the original disk to this computer and although I downloaded all the drivers they're exe files that might only work in Vista like the BIOS one did. Nice to know I won't have to worry about that now.

EDIT: Damn. That thing is cool. Took all 120+ drivers I had on my system and put them into individual folders with the exact same names that they had on display in Device Management.

Window 10 is phenominal when it comes to basic drivers for most things, but usually there's a snag or two and it comes with some important mobo stuff. I always prefer to have legit NVIDIA graphics drivers over the generic Windows ones, and it's nice to know I have the current USB2.0 drivers backed up now in case I have problems finding them online and the official EXE variety I downloaded wouldn't load in 10.

Oh... and I did manage to find a final BIOS update that was about a year later than the one I had before. I'm going to give that a try and give that SSD one last shot before I reinstall everything on the laptop HDD.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Oh btw SIX I talked to hubby. His problem was a little different- he was trying to install linux AND Windows OSs on different partitions on an all-in-one originally loaded with Windows, so you could have a multi-OS bootup. Long story short Windows would not allow a multi OS bootup, so he had to clobber Windows and load linux with a bootable CD drive and create the system that way.
