Raining like hell around here the last day or two. Turning into snow tonight. Should melt in a few days though.

Just ordered more trim. Quite a bit into it now, but I figured since I'm already taking it this far I might as well put a little more money and work into it and tear out all the old crap and bring the entire house up to my standards. The cuts down there will be extremely easy compared to some of the stuff I've had to do upstairs. I'm even thinking about refinishing the living room floor in the spring since I'm already pulling up all the baseboard and upgrading all the windows. That will make beautiful restored hardwood floors throughout the house, then all I'll have to do is figure out what I'm going to do for the floor in the porch and the kitchen when I remodel it. We'll see how money is at that point. Shouldn't cost me more than about $350 for stain, poly and equipment rental though.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Snowed last night then turned into rain. Still snow on the ground today but didn't get a whole lot.

Wherever possible there must be independent confirmation of the facts.

Encourage substantive debate on the evidence by knowledgeable proponents of all points of view.

Arguments from authority carry little weight (in science there are no "authorities").

Spin more than one hypothesis - don't simply run with the first idea that caught your fancy.

Try not to get overly attached to a hypothesis just because it's yours.

Quantify, wherever possible.

If there is a chain of argument every link in the chain must work.

Occam's razor - if there are two hypotheses that explain the data equally well choose the simpler.

Ask whether the hypothesis can, at least in principle, be falsified (shown to be false by some unambiguous test). In other words, it is testable? Can others duplicate the experiment and get the same result?

1kiki, that Carl Sagan checklist you keep quoting is for deciding larger questions...

You post a long post kiki, someone responds, you repost it. Sometimes over and over. That's not having a discussion. That's trolling and you do it all the time. You and sig also post shit a mile long that nobody is going to read. My idea is that you guys post that shit here. I don't see you two doing that in your own threads comrade.

Got all of my trim picked up for the entire house. That's going to be a lot of work when I get to it all, but I'm looking forward to it.

I'm hoping I don't have to replace my fridge. It started really acting up a week ago. The freezer had a layer of frost on everything that started to grow. Just yesterday I noticed that the fridge wasn't that cold. So far, it looks like it's because the holes got plugged up with ice over the years... at least I hope that's all that happened and it wasn't an immediate thing that started when something broke on it.

Been de-thawing it all day today since I got back from running all my errands. My dumb ass just bought a week's worth of groceries too. At least it should be cold enough outside for everything today. If it were tomorrow, I'd have to figure something else out since all my frozen stuff would go bad.

Fingers crossed.

I think I lucked out with the fridge.

Takes a while to get it cold enough for food from scratch, but it's been plugging away at it for over an hour now and I finally brought everything back in. Looks like none of the food was ruined.

I definitely had a problem with the innards though. There's one unit up top in the freezer that has a grate at the top with a fan behind it, and it goes down to the fridge where it splinters off into three separate "holes". They were completely stuffed with ice.

I got this from some family when my old one died. No idea how old this one is either. Ever since I had it, it's had an evaporation problem. Ice cubes will literally disappear by themselves if left in there for a few weeks (I rarely ever use ice anymore because of my teeth and my almost involuntary chewing when I use it). Water also likes to come down these holes and pool up in the basin of the fridge below the crisper drawers.

What I'm thinking (hoping, actually), is that over time the water slowly dripping down into the fridge started freezing like icicles outside and eventually plugged these three holes up completely and that's when the frost built up in the freezer and the fridge stopped getting cold.

All I know for sure right now is the cooling mechanism seems to be working just fine. I probably won't know for at least a few days if this thing is going to keep working or just go belly up though. But at least my new food isn't going to go bad.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Well, it worked, sort of. After a couple of warm sunny days I could see some weeds dying back ... but only some weeds and only if they were in the sun. The filaree and pineapple weed were very susceptible, but the as far as the cheeseweed and grasses ... as far as they were concerned I may as well have fertilized them. Not comfortable spraying a lot of chemicals in the yard because of the dog and all of the friendly critters that come to visit so I'm planning to use a weed torch. I just need to find out what kind of propane supply and at what price, plus I need to decide whether I want the big 400,000 btu one, the 100,000 btu one, or the 20,000 btu one. The advantage of the smaller one is that you can spot-weed more effectively, the disadvantage is that it takes a lot longer to cover the same square footage because the flame size is so much smaller. I think I need a big one, I have a lot of square feet to cover.

Hmm.. sorry about that. They obliterated the weeds by my house. Not sure if it's because we've got different growth or because you used less than me or a combo of both. I don't have any animals around me except for ones that want to destroy my property, so I wasn't shedding any tears about using more than the recommended amount.

If you're getting a torch, I recommend not going any smaller than the one they used on Aliens.

The fridge seems to be fine. I just have to hope it keeps working right, but I don't see any evidence that it isn't.

In fact, not only is it running more quietly now than it did before, but some of the louder "cracks" that I have heard in the kitchen area (right next to the porch) since around summer time when I was first panicking about the state of the house were mysteriously absent last night. I think what I had in my head as actual cracking of stuff due to the porch foundation shifting was actually my fridge letting me know it was having a serious problem. It was probably all that ice in places that it shouldn't be expanding and getting into places where it wasn't designed to be.

I'm going to do some digging this week and see if there is an optimal temperature setting on that model that I should have on that thing to keep the buildup from happening again.
Do Right, Be Right. :)

Nice that you'll be getting a warm weekend, Brenda. Pretty nice around here right now, but our weekend is going to be frigid... probably the coldest we've seen all season.

I can't complain too much though. It's the middle of January and except for Halloween and early November it's been an unseasonably warm winter with very little precipitation.

Since you seem to be too mentally or morally incapably of using Sagan's 'baloney' detection kit, or even to understand or admit what the words in it mean ('evidence' has never been a viable concept for you), the next time I post Sagan's kit, I'll spell out all they ways you're deficient. Now, you may be too incapable or corrupt to admit your deficiencies, but I'm sure everyone else will manage to understand.

BTW, keep posting here just because you can't address my posts in their relevant threads. I'm sure you generate all sorts of illwill, and convince absolutely nobody by doing that.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

It's a small possibility Jack. It snowed just a tiny bit today when I was out. So word for the weather in BC is stayed tuned.

Carl Sagan's Baloney Detection Kit

Belief is for wimps and mental midgets!

So, NOT such a GREAT LIFE CHOICE! But I'm sure it matches your other fear-driven life choices that make you such a useful idiot.

Belief is for wimps and mental midgets!

Hey, I love Sagan. I just don't like you reposting it over and over again when some else posts on the thread after you. Trolling kiki, you're just trolling.

And I'll feel free to repost something that's true, topical, and worthwhile, despite your attempts at extortion - which btw is blatantly obvious to everyone else, no matter how much you try and disguise it.

Even more good news on the home front...

My concerns that major shifting and settling on the porch addition to my house have gotten out of hand since I've lived here were all in my imagination.

True, you can see an out of level pitch on the porch as it goes away from the house, but I just dug up all the pictures that I had from before I bought it and it was just as "bad" back then. Both my friend and my old man were telling me this summer that I was just imagining it and they could hardly even tell that it was happening from the street while I was showing it to them. So that coupled with the lack of "cracking" noises now that the fridge is working fine is really putting my mind at ease about any problems that would be out of my control without big money expenditures. It's funny the way your imagination can get out of hand if you let it...

Man... it's really nice looking at all of these old pictures. Even without all the new work that I've been doing, I've kind of forgotten how bad the house looked before I bought it and did all the work on it years ago.

To think... at the low of the housing market and it being in the state it was after a foreclosure, I bought this at more than $90k less than the previous owners did. If I really take my time working on it and I splurge for a new furnace and A/C, I might be able to make a $100k profit or more on it in a few years when it's all done.

By that point, I might reconsider even selling it. It's a lot of outside maintenance for sure, but maybe psychologically I just think it's overwhelming because of all of the other work that needed to be done on top of that. I might think a lot differently about the situation when everything is shiny and new. You sure can't beat the taxes around here, and living is cheap.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

So, I'm saying HEY ALL!

I'm slowly recovering from this flu (which appears to be Influenza B/ Victoria), that I got hammered with despite it being in the flu shot and me getting the shot. I think I need the old-folk's version of the flu shot, which has only 3 strains instead of 4, but has multiple times higher concentrations of everything to get a better immune response*. (*As an aside, I recently read a report of a study that indicates flu shots work best on 'naive' immune systems - yanno young people who haven't already been through every kind of flu for the past millennia. What happens with us old folks is that if the current vaccine even accidentally has a small irrelevant part that remotely resembles (cross reacts with) something we've seen before, our immune systems kick into gear and scour it out immediately ... meaning we never 'see' the vaccine long enough to develop a specific response to this year's version. I believe that by upping the dose a lot, enough vaccine hangs around long enough to create that specific response.)

But I got a bit out and about today, and went for coffee to my local ma & pa restaurant. Before I got sick I'd been talking with one of the waitresses. It turns out she and I are BOTH fans of TV cooking shows, have settled on the same shows as things we enjoy, and we both really enjoy thinking about new recipes. So I gave her one of my frozen meal portions to take home - and I warned her it was VERY utilitarian, frugal cooking! It was me literally looking through the frig and freezer and using up my all my left-over veges - potatoes, onions, kale, cabbage, and riced cauliflower - cooked with chicken thighs, and served with a fresh-thyme-and-cracked pepper white gravy.

And today I found out SHE LIKED IT!! I felt good about that!

But I have to say, on the other side a while ago I had some of an America's Test Kitchen recipe prepared by a family member that was simply spectacular. I couldn't describe how good it was. It was simply the best chicken dish I've ever had.

Even 'good' home cooking doesn't compare to that!

There is no discussion. A discussion would resembling something like Sagan's baloney detection kit http://www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?tid=63460 - facts, evidence, multiple hypotheses, and so on.

What we had was a simple exchange of opinions. We each stated ours*. End of story.

But feel free to continue on, and reap your rewards.

Wait. My post might have been too subtle for you.

No amount of opinion swapping WITH ME is going to change what people think of you. Learn from the reactions of the people around you. If they treat you like an unwelcome asshole, and you want a different reception, instead of trying to endlessly dispute their opinions with me - or them, just stop being an asshole.

But do what you want. Your actions aren't my problem. What people think of you isn't my problem.

Done now.

As you've said. At times there is a need to repost a post until a proper answer to the post is provided. Maybe you should explain, in great detail, what Sagan's points and perspectives are. That might go a long way in explaining to me why you felt a need to post this a dozen times.

Thanks Jack! I honestly don't recall ever having a flu and feeling that debilitated. I THOUGHT I could push myself and manage to take care of myself if I got worse, but the way I was FEELING was iffy.

Ah, I'm hurt. I learned this technique of trolling from two of the best. I'm hurt you don't acknowledge that. Tell me, how many times have you and sig done what I'm doing. Then told the poster to explain everything in great detail; hundreds, probably closer to thousands I bet?
