Garden planted, avocado trees hosed down. don't see any mite damage on the leaves (yet) but SOMEthing is munching big holes in them! That's a first! Avocado leaves are thick and tough and usually nothing manages to eat them!

I feel like I've been playing "Beat The Clock" with this garden. The decision to start a garden was late in the season, and May is a late planting. But I got almost all of the plants in the ground, just another six-pack and some strawberries and a melon to go. So .... whew! The big push is done,

Those strawberries ... I have no idea how well they produce or what the berries taste like, but unlike regular strawberries with white flowers, these were rosy pink and just too pretty to pass up!

My walk was good yesterday but very muggy. When I got back I got my sheets changed and some glasses washed that I had bought a while back. They are now in a cupboard.

The rain arrived at around 11:30 last night, so everything is still wet out when I went out for my walk today. But at least the mugginess is gone.

Well, thanks to the cooler weather none of my plantings suffered transplant shock. yay!

And I FINALLY got that very last caterpillar off my basil, and also off my coffee seedlings. YAY!

I got MOST of the avocado leaves raked up... another three 65-gallon bins-worth this week, and just as much last week. Since all of my greenwaste bins are full, I have to start using some spare 33-gallon bins for the (continued) cleanup.

Spring is a huge cleanup season. Our avocados are dumping their leaves, weeds and plants are growing. NOTE TO SELF: Xfer pruning, thinning, and trimming to late autumn and winter, when most plants are dormant.

Every morning, at least an hour of yardwork. I hope that's enough to keep up!

I've been looking at when to prune natives, or if one should prune them. Generally - and this is true of non-natives as well - one should prune a few weeks before they break dormancy. That way, active growing will heal over the pruning wounds.

There are 2 times when natives break dormancy here. One is during the later fall rains when the air and ground are still somewhat warm. So pruning might be at the end of September or early October. But as winter progresses, even while rains are (typically) plentiful, the air and ground get colder and growth stops. The next time natives break dormancy is in spring, when the ground is still moist, and the temperatures rise again. So that would mean pruning in the middle of winter. That's not a great time for the human gardener to be out doing work when it's wet and cold!

There are some things that supposedly should never be pruned, and the hollyleaf cherry and its subspecies the Catalina Island cherry are 2 of them. But I'd like to prune my cherry hedge at some point because it got damaged from (I believe) something the neighbor put on the soil. Fortunately, I have a tree elsewhere that I want to remove. It hit a good source of water and is going to be a genuine large tree instead of the far more typical shrub. So I'll cut it off about a foot above ground level and see if it tries to come back, and how that growth will sprout. If it comes back strong, as a shrub, I'll know the other trees will be able to tolerate the more modest pruning I hope to do.

I know for myself, we just passed Mother's Day and that is hard for me on two fronts. 1. my own mom has been gone for 12years now 2. I'm on my own. No other, no children. Always saw myself with a couple of children but that never happened.
I deal with it all.

Hope you get your paper work done and have fun shopping. I've been out for a walk and came back with a hot dog from another stand. The owner of this one is from Quebec and is a very nice lady.

Me... I'm still running as if the devil was chasing me. I think that's my response to generalized anxiety about our daughter's future.

I was sad to see all of those avocado leaves ... a couple hundred gallon's-worth, at least ... go to the big greenwaste composting operation in the sky. (Well, probably in Riverside County, but off my property and doing me no good.) I had a pile of avocado leaves that our former handyman had piled up years ago. One summer I took it upon myslef to water the darn thing and throw some nitrogen fertilizer on it once in a while. I imagined some nice crumbly rich black compost that I was going to throw on the new veggie patch, to make room for the newly fallen leaves and restart the whole process.

So I dug into the pile, and wouldn't you know. three inches down it was still just a pile of big, dry leaves. No decomp at all. I think the problem is that the leaves are so big and so tough that they lie very flat and make almost like a thatch that sheds water, and without water nothing happens, biologically.

Hmm...

Well, I don't feel so bad about binning and hauling out the new leaves if I can't even figure out how to make the old ones demcompose. I'd almost need a leaf mulcher, or something, just to break them up into smaller bits.

Thanks to hubby's energy and skills we re-installed dear daughter's built in bookcase yesterday. It had been removed at our request by contractors over two years ago so that we could paint the walls, but since we took out the carpet and added hardwood floors and a baseboard it no longer stood flush against the wall. So hubby added a 5" base and did a little cutout for the baseboard and now it's once again attached to the wall.

I was just helping, and I was beat at the end of the day!

*****

I figured out what to do with all of the old (and future) avocado leaves. When I went online to look at leaf shredders I saw they were mostly string trimmers. Well, I have a string trimmer, I was just going to stick it into the pile a shred away, but I see that others have had the same idea and its better to put the trimmer in a 65-gal bin and put the leaves on top and let 'er rip! That way the leaves are contained and shred better.

I tried it out in one of my 33-gal bins and I get amazing bulk reduction (10:1 at least) so now all I need to do is wait for the trash truck to come tomorrow and empty out my bins so I can work on reducing the old pile and use it as mulch. I'll be ready for next year too!

Drizzly morning here, too. Crazy weather! But I was going to irrigate the property anyway so I added my 0.5" of irrigation to the 0.1" of rainfall.

Unfortunately, when I went to take puppy-wuppy out for a brief potty break, I stepped carelessly into a puddle in the gutter, and BOOM! Down I went!

I KNOW that those shoes are slick in water, I've "almost" fallen several times but with wild arm-waving managed to right myself, I just forgot. I can count the damage as one skinned knee, one broken blood vessel in the heel of my right hand, and (unfortunately) a wrenched right shoulder. It doesn't hurt if I just keep my elbow at m side, but it's going to be a problem with yardwork, or anything else.

So, I took a nap! It was great!

Well, I went out and ate in an actual restaurant today. Staff wore masks and gloves. Some tables were blocked off to maintain social distancing. Also there were no salt or pepper shakers on the table. Sugar was. Not a lot of people in but some and the staff seemed happy to be back. Also floors all marked so you could only go a certain way.

But it was nice to be able to sit down and eat. Then I could get on with the rest of my errands without worrying about my blood sugar going too low.

It sounds like your knee(s) stiffen up after long periods of beig still, like standing or sitting? It could be arthritis. Have you tried taking one of the NSAIDS for it? (Ibuprofen, naproxyn etc) Not a good idea to take constantly but may be helpful when things flare up. Also somewhat diagnostic: if your knee(s) improve with ibuprofen that means you have an inflammatory process going on.

Tried to do my usual yardwork, but it went really slow bc I was favoring my shoulder. Also, my string trimmer ran out of string so nothing can happen until the new string comes in.

But hubby bought me a leaf shredder anyway. If it works as well as it seems on video, it will help me reduce that many-year-old pile about five times faster than with a string trimmer. It wasn't too expensive, either.

But I think my next urgent thing to do tomorrow is spray the avocadoes with Neem oil: they went from "no mite damage" a week ago to "OMG!" in the space of just a few days! I've been hosing them off regularly hoping to forestall the mite invasion, but I really need to reach for something else. After that, I'll release some beneficial insects (there is an insectory in the next county over, Rincon Vitova, where I buy them). Trying o decide between neosieulous californicus (predatory mite) and N fallacis (1:1 mi) or lacewing (general predator that would eat the N californicus and fallacis too). I think I'll go with the predatory mites, they tend to stay in place whereas the lacewings fly off once their prey is gone. Plus, fallacis overwinters.

Yes they do. I hadn't thought about arthritis setting in but that does make some sense. I can take a little Tylenol for pain but that's about it. I've got to watch what mixes with my seizure medicine. Also pain killers used to put my lights out and I don't like them.
Heat I find works the best and sleep. Sleep for me and pain is still the best remedy. As long as I can use sleep to knock out the pain, I'm glad.

NSAIDS are NOT painkillers. They are NonSteroidal AntiInflammatory DrugS and include aspirin, ibuprofen, meloxicam, naproxen, etc.
https://www.drugs.com/drug-class/nonsteroidal-anti-inflammatory-agents
.html

Inflammation is a complex process set off by the immune system in reponse to damage or disease, but what it eventually involves is your capillaries becoming "leaky" and letting fluid and white blood cells swarm the site of damage/infection in order to ward off disease. Wht that does is cause swelling, redness, heat, and pain. NSAIDS shut off that process. They work AT THE SITE OF INFLAMMATION, THEY DO NOT ACT IN YOUR BRAIN. They DO tend to cause generalized sodium and water retention, I assume because the affect the small capillaries in your kidneys. Please don't avoid them on the mistaken assumption that they are "painkillers".

TYLENOL IS a painkiller. It is a non-opioid drug that DOES act in your brain to reduce the brain's response to pain. Unlike NSAIDS which can cause gastrointestinal bleeding and water retention (kidneys) Tylenol can do a number on your liver if overdosed or combined with alcohol.
There are opioid-based painkillers that I can imagine would interact with any number of anticonvulsants including carbamazepine. Codeine is the most common one prescribed for pain and is commonly mixed with tylenol and sold as codeine/paracetamol, co-tylenol, tylenol#3, tylenol#4 etc but these are available only by prescription.

The most effective painkiller OTC combo that I know of is an NSAID combined with Tylenol. The NSAID acts at the site of inflammation and reduces the source of pain, while Tylenol acts in your brain to reduce the perception of pain. The two combined work far better than just an additive effect.

TBH I tend to avoid both, partly because I already have a problem wth water retention and also bc I do drink alcohol. For me, I go with rest, heat (those chemical heat patches work super well for me, they provide a very low level of heat for over 12 hours and work great), gentle motion and gradual return to normal activity. I only take meloxicam when every joint with arthritis flares up (fingers, knuckles, hips, knees, ankles, feet) and the pain keeps me from sleeping. It works great, but I know I'll put on 5 lbs of water weight and my fingers and feet will puff up.

But, as always, your mileage may vary. Only you know how you react to specific medications.

So, speaking of chemical heat patches .. worked to reduce shoulder pain by quite a bit, so I drenched the Haas avocado with Neem oil as far as the hose-end sprayer could reach, and ordered a combination of predatory mites to arrive next Wednesday. We'll see how that goes.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

I'm really glad you're doing better, Signy!

BTW, thanks for mentioning the biological controls source. They seem to be out of the protein bait that Argentinian ants would go for - they don't seem to like sugar - but I'll keep checking back with the website.

I have taken naproxen I think years ago when I sprained my back. It did work.

Would have to talk to my GP about something like naproxen when her office is open again.

Know they don't go through the brain BUT given that I can't use certain allergy medications because of my seizure meds, I am careful about any and all medications I take for anything.

Also if I need an antibiotic my doctor has to be careful of what she prescribes for me.

I have learned over the years what this seizure medication is like.

Our daughter was trialed on literally a dozen anti-convulsants, so I know there can be all kinds of unantipated interactions between them and other medications and even foods. For example, Tegretol depletes the body of vitamin D. So it's good to be careful and check with your doctor. But don't you see a neurologist? I would think that should be a regularly-scheduled followup. A specialist might suggest better medictions.

One thing I was wondering about is CBD oil. I have, literally, a shaggy dog story about that: I know a couple that has a very elderly dog who, in addition to being born deaf had developed heart failure and seizures. The dog had developed a serious head-tilt that really looked neuological, almost as if he was having one-sided occipital lobe seizures that were intefering with his left field of vision. He was given phenobarbital and then either depakote or tegretol ... I forget which ... but none of them helped. The next time I saw him he was om CBD oil, no anticonvulsants, and his head had straightened out amd has stayed that way for months.

Have you heard anything about it? If so, what do you think?

I didn't know that about Tegretol but I've found out the hard way with this med about foods and drug interactions. I am on Keppra and have been for over 10years.

Going to a neurologist used to be a regular thing but since I have been stable for so long, I don't now. Last time I went was when my meds needed adjusting and that was over 8years ago.

I've heard of that oil but had to look it up to be sure if I was thinking of the right thing. I was and I am not willing to try it.

Talked to an actual librarian today and have submitted my order for my holds. Just hope I remembered to give them my new phone number. Yikes!

Also my eye doctor's office is doing a deep cleaning gearing up for the return of patients. That is a very good thing.

Nothing like having a pepper mill break while you are making supper. Least what fell off went into the food and not the floor.

Yardwork seems to be one crisis after another, usually because the weeds/pests/leaves are gaining ground and taking over. Today's effort was pulling up about a bin's-worth of calendrinia spectabilis (rock purslane) which, in most locations that I've seen it was a modestly-sized succulent with rosettes of blue-green leaves and tall wands topped with bright magenta flowers.
Except in my yard, where they threaten to take over. I was yanking out the ones that had overgrown the curb, partly to make them look more intentional and less overgrown, and partly to find the damn water meter, which they had fully covered.

Drat that! Fresh ground black pepper has SUCH a nice flavor. I hope you can find a good replacement for your mill.
