I do have another one which is a good thing. I also have a salt mill.

Not really any different but I was picking whole pepper corns out of my supper.

Late edit: I do find fresh ground pepper much stronger to my taste. So when I do grind some I use very little.

Hey Signy - just to let you know, I was curious and looked up avocado leaves as mulch. Aside from them being tough, large, water-repellent, and packing flat, they are reputed to be good mulch. They don't have any allelopathy as far as I can tell.

Mulch away!

Well, I've finally figured out what's going on with my medically-challenging cat! His guts don't work, mechanically-speaking. And he has a prescription for that, but the problem is getting it down him, since he hates it and he's HUGE!, powerful, and half-feral. I found a website that has that medicine in different forms, so think tomorrow I'm going to have a nice long chat with the vet to see what can be done with that.

Since I decided to stock up on beans, I figured I'd order different kinds online to try them out. My current 2 favorite kinds are pinto and great northern, or I'll use either navy of cannelinni instead of great northern. I'm not really keen on garbanzos or kidney beans (or any kind of red bean for that matter), lentils and split peas, and I really dislike Lima beans (also called butter beans).

So now I have cranberry beans which are tan with a few dark brown speckles, petit French beans which are a white bean smaller than a navy bean, European soldier beans are large long white bean with a small dark brown eye, Steuben yellow eye which are a large white bean with a large tan eye, pink pearl beans that are small pink and more rounded, Anasazi beans that are medium sized and long beans brown with white speckles, and Appaloosa beans that look like Anasazi except they're white with brown speckles, and I have on order flageolets, a large long white bean with a greenish tinge. I intend to cook them by type and taste-test them against my standbys to see which I prefer best. In any case, I'll use them all in my favorite bean recipes!

For example, I'll cook a half-pound each of petit French, great northern, navy, and flageolet, as they're in the category of "white bean" that I like.

Thanks for the tip!

I never thought to look for allopathy. But since you did that for me, I'll be happily shredding away, first for the veggie garden and then for everything else!

My plan for the veggie garden is to put the mulch on the pathways between the plants so the soil doesn't get so beaten down.

OH BTW, I'll be interested to see how this works out, but I made "lizard houses" between some of my zucchini. They're just chunks of concrete close together to make little crevices for lizards to hide between when threatened, and spaces to sun when not. Also, acts as a mulch, believe it or not. Right now the plants are too small and the area too barren to act as a lizard habitat, but maybe when the zucchini grow I'll see some use of them.

Already thinking about my winter crop: carrots, beets (again), onions (again), and I definitely want to make an asparagus patch.

I also found out that avocados, which are water-thirsty and have very shallow root systems, benefit greatly from mulch, as it keeps the soil both moist and cool. Though of course one should NEVER pile up mulch against the trunk of any tree! (or against the stem of any plant, for that matter), but leave an open well there in the mulch bed instead. And mulch should go out to at least to the dripline.

Well, today we ran about 24' of conduit thru a (new) hole in the garage wall, and pulled new wire to rewire the demand heater to reconfigure the wiring in the garage. Had to rewire the special fitting that came with the heater and the external on-off switch as well, Fortunately, we had hot water for showers at the end of the day. Still yo do: drop a line to the location of the new workbench and install outlets (This particular circuit is for the demand heater which is gas powered but needs electricity for the ignitor, sensors, relays and switches) plus whatever hubby want to put in for his bench. Also, stucco patching.

I started the day by spraying glyphosate on problem areas, especially around the perimeter of my new veggie garden (I REFUSE to have it taken over by Bermuda grass!) and taking the doggie for a walk, and tonight I will be taking an honest-to-god pain pill, just to make the pain go away.

My leaf-shredder came in today, but I might just stick with house chores tomorrow to recuperate. The place looks like a bomb hit it, and needs urgent tidying up!

OH yeah, this is definitely an indoor-work day. Too many things still hurt/are stiff to make much progress on anything. I think the only outdoor work I'm going to do is hand-water the veggie garden, which is doing quite well. None of the plants suffered transplant shock and they're all putting out new sprouts. I can assess how well the roots are expanding (because sometimes potted plant roots stay in their little root-ball) by how big the plant becomes, but it's still too early to tell!

I'll grab a cup pf tea and slip on my garden clogs, wander the backyard in my bathrobe and see how the garden is faring. Now, that's a CIVILIZED way to start the day!

Oh, I will. Aches and stiffness are a measure of how much physical work I've done, and it's pretty specific to what I was doing.
If I lay off for a day or two or rotate my tasks the pain goes away. Today is DEFINITELY a no-yardwork day!

I wish you and BRENDA could have had a cup of tea or coffee with me, and just wandered the yard and enjoyed the cool quiet morning, and then gone inside to some comfy couches and have a nice chat!

So I have a ??? for you, or anyone who knows anything about gardening:

I have small space about 20'X10' in the backyard devoted to native/xeric plants; I used to have a ceanothus (california lilac) in there, but it cratered after growing spectacularly for 2 years. I'd like to replace it with something, it would be nice if it were evergreen fruit-producing but I can't find any that do both, so am looking at mexican elderberry, native mulberry, or persimmon.

any thoughts?

Well, the rain held off on my walk. Not so far but only the end of May. I am hoping that June and further on will be dry. Wet in spots up the Interior and the Valley, down to where I am and Vancouver Island. Still seeing snow at higher elevations. Suppose to warm up for the mainland next week. I hope so.

ETA Forgot to mention the tornado that happened in Saanich which is on Vancouver Island. No damage done except for some dirt thrown around and a trampoline that it picked up and then dropped further down the road from the house where it belonged.

If it's a large enough space, a good choice would be Mexican elderberry While not evergreen, it's SPECTACULAR! most of the year. It's leaves are always a bright, fresh green no matter how hot and dry the weather, and it's bloom clusters are held on the outside. Close up they look like old lace,

from a distance, they look light lemon-yellow.

It can get quite large around, given time. I recommend Sambucus nigra ssp. caerulea v just the regular Sambucus nigra, because the ssp. has a far longer bloom time. https://www.calflora.org/cgi-bin/specieslist.cgi?namesoup=sambucus&
;countylist=any&plantcomm=any&format=photos&orderby=taxon
I noticed them blooming already out in the fields where they planted themselves. The ones I see do seem to be the ssp. because they bloom all spring through summer.

There is a drought tolerant Texas native mulberry - morus microphylla - that's a sweet-looking shrub-tree. BUT, I would NOT recommend it. It's wind pollinated and reputed to be highly allergenic. I would plant it only in a far removed spot.

Neither Asian nor native persimmons are terrific to look at as trees - kind of like dreary avocados - but certainly would fill the spot.

Even though they're not native, have you thought of pomegranate? They're a drought tolerant, attractive tree.

They bloom and produce on second-year wood iirc. But in production (it's a commercial crop) they're cut down to the ground from time to time, which keeps them both small and at maximum production.

Once upon a time, when we lived in a townhouse, I had a pomegranate in a half-barrel ad it did rather nicely and even bore fruit, but nobody likes pomegranates except for me, so the fruit would be wasted. At least with elderberry the birds will eat it, even if we don't.

The tree-shrub looks like a willow with fountain form, and the fruit looks like pretty red and cranberry Xmas ornaments hanging from the branches. The flowers are large and very bright orange red, somewhat tubular, not my favorite color but many people find it pretty. I would say overall a pretty addition to a lansdcape, and useful if you and your family and neighbors like pomegranates!

so yesterday was my "fuckit" day, and the only useful thing I did was take dd and puppywuppy for a walk.

Today I broke open my new leaf-shredder and started to process the "compost pile" that our former handyman/landscaper had created, and immediately found a few problems with the "compost pile" (aside from the fact that avocaio leaves were not composting very well

a) The pile, defined by 8' posts driven into the ground and corraled by plastic mesh fencing, is far too big for anyone to effectively manage. It's about 8-9'X 6-7', far too big for anyone to reach across even with a rake, or turn over and (at this point) too tall for anyone to manage.
b) With block wall on two sides and plastic mesh fencing on two sides, there's no way to "wade into" the pile.
c) On top of that, it was made more inaccessible with rubble piled up along one side of the plastic mesh fencing
d) A lot of palm fronds and small branches were tossed in, along with some rubble and trash, which can't be shredded.

I'm going to have to deconstruct the pile and get rid of a lot of the concrete and brick rubble. But I've managed to rake a bunch of leaves off the top and yank a lot of palm fronds out and shred about 10-12 bags-worth of leaves, making a bag's-worth of mulch, and managed to mulch a couple of garden-rows.

So I can see where I can really make this garden work, and do a lot of cleanup at the same time.

YEE HA!

PS, my arthritis is really kicking up. Just assembling the unit (which is very easy, needs no tools) made my fingers and thumbs creak, and my shoulders twinge. Sigh.

PPS KIKI, if you are anywhere near me, just let me know if you need any of my fancy garden toys! Between my string trimmer (with two new spools of string), leaf shredder, hand-pressurized spray pump, weed torch, and trusty spade, dirt rake, leaf/thatch rake, loppers, clippers and weeding fork I have all the tools one needs to make a garden sing!

Great work with the compost pile! I'll bet the shredded leaf mulch will be HUGELY appreciated by all your garden plants!

I went shopping a couple of days ago and stocked up on cheap meats: ground pork, pork shoulder, and pot roast. But since my old brands became unavailable, I had to go with news brands. So I've been cooking them up to see how they do before I use or freeze them. The ground pork: I made 24 meatballs out of 4.5lbs and baked them @300F 1.5hrs with a bit of water, covered. (I find it does a better job of rendering out the fat if they're cooked moist.) I removed the meatballs and stored them, and poured off the liquid into a container and chilled it in the frig. I kid you not, I removed over 1.5lbs of fat from the liquid this am, and the cooked meatballs weighed only 2.5lbs. The ground pork lost close to half its weight in cooking, mostly in fat, and a bit in water. Fortunately, my bean and pork stew recipe calls for 2.5lbs of cooked pork, so I did a good job! guesstimating how much raw ground pork I'd need, given the way it looked in the store.

Today it'll be on to trimming, cubing, and cooking the pot roast and pork shoulder, which is rather tedious, but I find one needs to pre-prepare that kind of cut or you end up with a very fatty dish. Plus if you cook your meat ahead of time, it takes up less space in the freezer.

Did you know that the FREEZER plastic bags are specially formulated to not let water pass through (sublimate) and dry your food out in the freezer? At least, according to the inet.

Tonight I'm going to water a tree, so that early tomorrow or perhaps the next day I can weed the area, rake the soil away from the trunk and level it, and mulch the tree. I have clay soil and it's literally hard as a brick when it's dry, but if you water it and wait, it gets past the gummy sticks-to-everything stage and becomes very workable. I'll be using some wood shavings I have as temporary mulch, to be later covered by prettier mulch, perhaps bark nuggets. So my next outdoor work project I HOPE will be tree-by-tree.

I'm looking for ideas on what to plant on either side of the walkway to my front door. I was thinking of planting the same kind of privet I have by the side of my house, but over the years I found it grows HUGE! and makes its own intrusive thicket. Elderberry might be nice, but it also gets rather large. Anything too large looks out of proportion to the house and the city-sized 50' lot. I have a lot of crape myrtle, including 3 smaller varieties, one of which has fuchsia

blooms and delightful pale gold and pale peach fall leaves that look like they glow, but aside from the bloom that bees like, the wildlife value isn't there. So I'm still casting about for ideas.

My ideal solution is
smallish (but tall enuf to walk under)
tree form so I can plant closer to the walkway and have it overhung with canopy
deciduous to keep it from being too dark and dreary in winter
drought tolerant/ low maintenance
wildlife friendly
PRETTY!
But I might be looking for too much.

Still, I'm not nearly ready to redesign to front yard (again, fourth iteration) into final form, so I have time to think on this.

Elderberry doesn't fill the bill? what I looked up said it was about 15' tall... not too tall, is it?

What about feijoa? It might be an everlasting pruning job, but can be pruned up into a single-trunked or multi-trunked tree. Except it isnt deciduous,

*****

My cooking adventures for the week: I got a little TOd bc after a longish nad painful day I was faced with hours of kitchen-work and no help. Also, people being too picky eaters, plus the fact that I can't smell or taste anything pretty much robs me of the satisfaction of making anything that tastes good to me. So I turned in my one-week's notice and told the family that I quit.

Earlier, I was taking frozen chicken out of the freezer and with my bad hands I lost hold of it and it landed on my toe. It was the equivalent of dropping a 6lb rock on my toe and I have a nice painful bruise to show for it.

Elderberry isn't too tall, but the individual trees I've seen growing out in the middle of nowhere are really wide. They seem to branch very low to the ground and all the way up the trunk with lots and lots and lots of branches! Given how adaptable they are to being cut down to the ground, I think they'd do well with pruning, but it just seems like too much work.

This is a somewhat trimmed example.

I truly hope your sense of smell comes back.

I'm sorry for you about your hands ... and your toe. I do think not cooking will be QUITE the load off your schedule!

4 more days of T-Storms in a row by me here starting today. Here's hoping I luck out and it's just a small amount of rain per day and I'm not spending any of those nights up until 6:00AM mopping. These back to back to back 3" rain storms are killing me this spring.

Did you hear that the Chicago River flooded and knocked out the broadcast tower that sent Channel 2 and about 10 other stations to everyone in the Chicagoland area?

Lake Michigan is breaking dams all over the place and becoming a huge hazard. Naperville, IL must not have been prepared at all for this type of weather since it didn't get much more water than we got here and it put tons of houses several feet underwater. An 18 year old girl was walking her dogs and they all got swept away... they only found one of the dogs later.

Usually I'm the only one I know dealing with water issues on my house, and although they were bad last time, I was able to keep up with mopping up several hundred gallons of water and was fortunate to have a few large containers to keep up with the collection effort when the storm sewer backed up and I wasn't able to dump it anymore. I've always heard of toilets backflowing and dumping water into houses, but never saw it with my own eyes until now. Talk about feeling helpless... My brother and his wife had everything in their basement destroyed and one of my friends has spent the last week cleaning up his and deciding what to throw out and what to try to keep.

Hope you're doing well otherwise. It's times like these where I really envy people who rent apartments.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Rain here right now and suppose to dry out some by Thursday. We shall see.

Didn't hear about Chicago. But I know about the dams that broke in Michigan and have flooded areas and towns.

I would have loved a house when I was younger but yeah, repairs would have been the end of me. So maybe a good thing I could never afford one.

Getting slammed with some depression again weather and other stuff related.

Yeah well. Someone brought in a slight case of bedbugs over the last week. On Saturday I had to be very careful how I did my laundry. The manager did bring in the pest guy and had it sprayed. Hope he got them all but I didn't see anything.

No, you wouldn't. Owning a house has only one upside: you don't pay rent. Other than that, it seems to be a constant headache, wherever you are!

Umm... I was hoping that moving to a brighter, cleaner, larger, and more functional home would have helped with the depression, but it still seems to be dogging you. Is it the isolation, do you think, that's causing you to feel so blue?

Naw, it's all abut YOU, JACK! Since YOU decided to make this personal, I'm just returning the favor.

But truth be told, the thing that would make me truly happy about you is if you got non-existent AIDS from that non-existent virus HIV.

Is that personal enough for you, JACK?

We had a great time. He was here for a few weeks. I didn't really put him to work at all, but he did stand outside doing nothing for about 90 minutes in between holding the ladder for me when I finally patched up and re-shingled the roof that the squirrel ate through (I did manage to find a perfect match for the shingles, which I never thought I was going to be able to do). It took a lot longer than I thought it would and bought him a pizza afterward to say thanks.

Depending on how long this whole thing goes on he might be coming back. Offer's always on the table. Going to have to get the windows finished and get the A/C in and see how well it works first though. He doesn't do well in heat, and it's a good thing he left before the current 80 and 90 degree weather set in.

It was a nice break for me. I mean, I worked a lot and got a lot done, but we never watched the news or paid any mind to it on the internet. 2 whole weeks away from everything was really nice.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Good deal! Arguing and the "news" can be so ... draining. As you can see, we've been a busy family too.

Well, I have places to go (livingroom), people to see (family), and things to do (unwind and continue our Warehouse 13 marathon!).

I'd like that.

I don't think that you and I have said anything so egregious to each other that there isn't any going back.

I'm never going to apologize about anything that I've said, and I don't expect you or anybody else to either.

If that's fine by you, I'll consider this Switzerland and just ignore anybody in here who doesn't.

It's probably hotter by you right now, ain't it?

Problem here is it's that hot after getting insane amounts of rain, so the humidity is through the roof like it's been all spring/summer long for the last 6 years straight now. :(

I really need to fix this house up and sell it so I can get into a tiny manageable one with a small yard so I can immerse myself in my hobbies and just tune out all of the crap like I used to.

Too much News makes Jack a dull boy.

Enjoy Warehouse 13 if this is the first time you've seen it. I was surprised at how good that show got and I was glad I stuck with it.

This is NOT Switzerland to JACK. All I posted was a when he came here looking for sympathy for all his self-caused woes.

I know but after my dad died, we lived mostly in apartments so I was missing the loss of freedom during my later childhood.

It has helped tremendously over the winter. But, yeah now it is the isolation that is doing my head in at times. I am not really a people person but I got used to a certain level of interaction with my mah jong group. With that gone. Yeah.

Yanno KIKI, he wasn't calling JUST YOU a "Karen", and everything that he posted about you, and to you, was aimed at me too.

I see what he's doing, and I agree that he started it. I was stung, and pissed off, and I've typed all kind of nasty retorts that I erased, not just in this thread but in others. Trust me, I had some real zingers all lined up. But what's the point?

I guess I'm looking for areas of agreement, not disagreement. We can disagree on a lot of things, but I'll bet there are at least a few things we can agree on.

SIX's posts are mostly all about *him*. He only pretends to care about "people" but in reality he would like nothing better than to see BRENDA, you, SECOND, JONGSSTRAW, me, and any of the "old" and "weak" people die because he feels we stole the future (Easy Street) from him, and that he will be a survivor and will pick up the pieces as they fall from the deads' hands.

I noticed that he likes to post that "It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine" except ... it really IS the end of the world as we know it, and he DOESN'T feel fine because the new world coming up is going to be hotter, poorer, and more dysfunctional and require way more work for far less payout than the old world. And he may be a survivor, but he sure isn't going to be a winner in the new world, because he doesn't own it.

And I think he knows it because he's lived it: At his age when he should be doing better than when he started out his life was derailed when his awesome job was outsourced to India, and he's been taken down, step by step, thru a series of economic events and bad decisions, to a point where he's living almost a feral life divorced from any source of income except government handouts and gray-market jobs.

So what's to like about THAT???

And instead of blaming the companies that scour the world for the cheapest labor, he's focused on "old people" as the source of the problem.

But the only way that we can get past that terrible part to a better patch is if we work together and stop this black/white, male/female/other, young/old infighting and start focusing on who the REAL enemy is, and that's the people who own the world, the media and the politicians and who are the ones making the big decisions that got us into this mess in the first place.

SIX... any of this ringing any bells? Or am I way off base?

But nobody can keep anybody from posting anything they want to post, unless the poster allows themselves to be derailed by snarky comments from the side (BTW, nothing shuts up CC faster than asking him if he's a paid troll. Just FYI).

Anyway ... back to the garden!

As you may have noticed, gardening is my avocation (altho I feel like what I'm doing is "yardwork" more than "gardening").

Anyway, I took some rubble away from the "compost" pile and cut off the long side of the plastic mesh fence (which was btw 3-4 ft tall) and started digging in. If it was trash, like palm fronds which even our city's greenwaste program won't handle I pulled it out by hand. If it was big enough to be caught by the leaf-rake, into the 65 gal bin it went! The leaf-mold (what there was of it) sifted to the ground, and when there was enough I picked it up by shovel. To give you and idea of how dysfunctional the "compost" pile was, I filled the 65 gallon bin with old dry leaves and about a 1/3 of a 33-gallon bin with leafmold.

But once the big bin was full, I had to come to a stop because ... no more bins. Two were out by the curb with trimmings already. So today I shredded the big binful, and between that, the leafmold, and the previous shredding the veggie garden is more-or-less mulched and watered and ready for the summer. The plants are working on their fourth set of leaves already, and when I took a picture of the garden I could see rows of green instead of a big patch of dirt with maybe a few tiny green shoots.

YEE HA!

Been out for my walk and while out stopped at my doctor's office to ask a question. I was then informed since they had no appointments that I could see her(my gp). The nurse hemmed and hawed for a moment because I didn't have a mask but decided to let me in and give me one.

Anyways long story short it is off to the vampires I go in a bit as I need refills for my meds.
