Meanwhile, we had a some foggy nights a while back, and those silver spots on the zucchini leaves that I thought were some sort of color variegation were powdery mildew, because my gosh, was my zucchini decimated after those humid nights! So I turned to agricultural copper complex (a very pretty blue), cut off the worst-affected leaves, and hope that with regular spraying I can retrieve the new leaves.

One of the watermelons is ready to harvest. I hope I haven't left it on the vine too long! Gardening is definitely learn-by-doing.

Except for our May scorcher ... with temps above 100F, feeling like we went directly from winter to late summer ... the weather here in the flatlands of LA has been pretty moderate. Wish I could trade weather with you BRENDA!

As I recall, about this time last year (or possibly a little later in the year) BC has 200+ fires all at once. THAT was bad. By comparison 38 fires doesn't sound too terrible.

I guess there will always be a "fire season" in the West. It's like the drought monitor- there will always be a drought somewhere. The only questions are "where, and how bad"?

Yanno my family ethnicity is Polish, but I wouldn't get all huffy if perogi and czarnina and krusczyki suddenly became popular and everyone started cooking it, especially if some restaurant made a version almost as good as grandma's and I could buy some! I don't get what this "cultural appropriation" issue is all about. I would feel that if someone adopted an ethnic food, dress, music, or expression, it would be a compliment.

If someone calls their team the "Vikings" or the "Redskins" it's not becaue they're trying to portray their team as a bunch of cowardly weaklings. If someone calls their brand Uncle Ben's or Aunt Jemima's it's not as if they're trying to say their product sucks. I think ppl should lighten up and realize that honest imitation is a sincere form of flattery.

Well, it IS quite a ways away ... and it's still early in the fire season.
