Well, there was a 4.6 earthquake (initial magnitude) down-rated to a 4.5 about 20 miles from me, and (I think) about 10 miles from Signy. Oddly enuf, I didn't find any record of any aftershocks, which is weird.

Yep 4.6 according to the automated (machine generate, non-reviewed) report from Cal Tech. Because we are so close to the epicenter, we got all of the frequences all at once. It started with a deep WHOOOMP! and then vibrated the house really noisily, but only lasted about 10 seconds or so. The news confirmed that it was pretty much in the same place as the old "whittier narrows" earthquake lo these many years ago, which was memorable! THAT was a 5.9. The Whittier Fault, she is a-moving, again.

The predicted 3-day heat wave has turned into an 8-day heat wave. I hate it when that happens! But, I still have plenty of indoor work to do, such as cleaning and replacing all three filters on my HEPA vaccum cleaner, and re-caulking the kitchen sink. Plus, hubby was admitted to hospital for a day-and-half thru the ER for a case of non-Covid pneumonia, which was very worrying. Fun times!

I won't be posting too much because of piled-up work, but am keeping up with wht you guys are doing. Keep up the good work!

Interesting map. It shows the Bobcat fire burning to the west of me burned a miles-wide strip all the way across the Angeles National Forest from south to north: from the south edge of the forest at the South Coast Basin, northward across the San Gabriel Mountains, all the way through to the north edge of the forest and the Mojave Desert.

At my distance - and I think b/c I'm not on sedimentary rock - it was insignificant. I heard a quiet 'whomp'! felt one large, half-second shift sideways, 4 or so much smaller ones, a long, long pause, then a smaller recoil, and that was it. It was a fair bit of sideways movement, but not at all abrupt. Where I was, it would have been described as a 'slider'.
I remember the Whittier 'quake. It was my first big one and just about right on top of the epicenter. What an experience that was!
BTW there's some thought that the Whittier fault is part of the gnarly Puente Hills blind thrust fault that runs in part under Los Angeles. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puente_Hills_Fault

Starting Monday I'm getting a little break where the temps are somewhat under 90F, a bump up to 90F+ for 2 days, a cool down under 90F for 2 days, then back up to 90F+. Not as much or as long of a cool down as originally predicted, but it's far better than 115F!
Tho I have to say, as awful as the smoke was, the smoke clouds did keep temps about 5F lower than predicted.
The smoke has cleared considerably, so even tho the air quality is still bad because the fire's still burning, it's not outright hazardous like it was. (When I check the weather forecast, I also check the AQMD air quality forecast http://www.aqmd.gov/home/air-quality/air-quality-forecasts and the current air quality conditions http://www.aqmd.gov/home/air-quality/current-air-quality-data and try to plan accordingly.)
And I'm not entirely sure if it's related, but my wheeze/cough has gone away.

Got some more shredded paper down to the recycling bins when I got home today.

Bought myself a clock radio today but I don't think it is working. So may have to go back to the store on Monday. I'm not doing anything tomorrow.

Also have to find something else to put some of my dvds and VHS tapes into as one part of the bookcase I bought earlier this year I think decided to break today after I grabbed it so I wouldn't trip over something else.

Always something. *sigh* Will see what I can find on Monday.

And got a reminder call from my eye doctor's office about my appointment on Monday. Called them back and confirmed it.

It's a very small, modest 'recreation' park'. It's where I thought I lost the dog I picked up near a freeway entrance, when she decided to go play with a skunk. But once she got sprayed she came running to me, so I guess she'd already identified me as the one who helped her. (And I later made her part of my family when no one came to claim her.) It's where I used to jog with that same doggie on the horse trails, where I saw a tarantula bigger than the palm of my hand!

Tho the place isn't anything like a wilderness area, or even a large park, the amenities are surrounded by extremely steep ravines accessible only with difficulty and only on foot, and housing rattlesnakes and such like. So I've seen deer, quail, coyotes, road runners, and such, when they come out of the ravines and into the park at dusk.

If a raccoon gets into my attic next spring, I'm going to have to check it for a parachute.

Insane amount of branches removed today now that I could reach them. My body is toast. I'm not used to stretching while doing a balancing act like that for 4 straight hours.

An old lady I'd never seen before was driving down the street with her husband in the passenger side and before I started mowing the lawn I could tell that she was saying something to me. I pulled out my headphones and asked her to repeat what she said.

She said "I love your house!"

I said "REALLY! YOU WANT TO BUY IT???!!!"

She laughed and said "no, no, no. I just wanted to say how nice it looks."

I told her how much that meant to me with how much work I've been putting into it this summer and wished her a great day.

Generally speaking, you can tell how close you are by how much of those fast frequencies that you feel, since they tend to die off with distance, and how big it is by how long it lasts. (It takes a surprisingly long time for several miles of earth to unzip; a large earthquake can last well over a minute. The longest earthquake ever recorded lasted 10 minutes!) Since it was very short and it felt/sounded like our house was being jackhammered, as well as rolling up and down, I assumed it was small but nearby, which turned out to be the case.

Well, the health advisory has been lifted for Vancouver and the surrounding cities today. YIPEE!!! There are still pockets of smoke around but now it is much farther from me.

Downside is now Southern Alberta is getting it all. Calgary and other areas have air advisories now. :(

Also heard in BC today we are stuck with Daylight Savings. Premier Horgan has delayed doing anything about it because of the situation we are in. He has a point.

My closest experience to an earthquake was being up near Milwaukee when a pretty huge one (by Midwest standards) hit somewhere in central or Southern Illinois. I was at work and we actually felt the building shaking a little bit and had no idea what it was until we heard the news.

I'd imagine houses by you need to be built pretty tough.

Bobcat fire explodes to 93,842 acres, claims homes amid heavy winds; more evacuations ordered

The Bobcat fire exploded Friday amid intense winds, burning homes in the Antelope Valley and spreading in multiple directions. The fire lines stretched across 30 miles of rough terrain on the northern flanks of the San Gabriel Mountains. The fire spread rapidly onto the desert floor Friday as winds arrived. Some residents had to flee as the fire jumped around, hitting some homes but sparing others. Flames tore through stands of yucca and juniper, leaving behind piles of ash resembling leopard spots and transforming the landscape into a smoky wasteland.

The fire has more than doubled in size in just a few days, growing nearly 20,000 acres from Friday to Saturday alone. Officials said the fire has been so challenging because it is burning in areas that have not burned in decades, and because the firestorms across the state have (left local firefighting with) limited resources.

Crews are trying to stop the blaze from marching east of Highway 39 and, to the west, working to protect Mt. Wilson, topped by its namesake observatory as well as numerous communication towers. Firefighters have put a containment line around part of Mt. Wilson but are “still not out of the woods” because hotspots could flare up, Dantic said. There was also concern that wind could push the fire northeast toward the Wrightwood area, which remained under an evacuation warning Saturday.

Fire crews have made significant progress on the southern edge of the fire, which jeopardized several foothill communities, including Arcadia and Sierra Madre. Evacuation warnings for Arcadia, Sierra Madre, Monrovia, Duarte and Bradbury were lifted Saturday afternoon, but the warnings remained in place for Pasadena and Altadena.

Your clock radio is busted? Second hand buy or new?

I'm only asking because the "brand new" ladder that I was supposed to have ordered came unboxed and severely damaged, to the point of being dangerous to even use. The driver must have tiptoed up with that thing and took off because the only reason I knew it was even delivered was because I heard a truck beeping outside and pulling away before noticing the ladder. Those things rattle around when you carry them unless you're trying to be stealthy, and it was delivered 5 feet from where I was sitting with the windows wide open.

They're shipping another one out early next month. If this one isn't brand new, they're taking it back too.

The listing said nothing about the ladder being used. Unless you're buying a product that specifically says that it's used, the implication is that it is brand new.

It was only one half of the bookcase that broke. And that is true enough.

Yeah, it must have been busted when I bought it. It was new. Plugged it in after putting the backup batteries into it. Tried to set the clock first and nothing happened.

That's crappy Jack. If you get another one like that I suggest a letter be returned to the company along with the ladder.

I still had to get the job done, so I took about twice as long as I should have by making certain the thing was shimmed up proper whenever I moved it, and had to go down and re-set everything if it moved to much while I was working. I wasn't able to get as high as I should have if the thing were in good shape, but I got enough done that I'm confident that I won't have raccoons trying to come in during the spring at least. It would have been nice to get everything that was above the roof before the gutters are installed, but even if I had a 16 foot ladder I'm doubting I would have been able to reach that high. These are pretty mature maples.

I got a quote I'm happy with on the gutters and it's set for next week if the guy doesn't flake on me. Going to firm up the order and the work day tomorrow hopefully.

He's got his own guys, and for once I'm just going to let the pros handle something. Says he should be done in 6 or 7 hours, and I know if I did it myself it would be 2 weeks before I had it done.

I'm going to do the gutter guards myself after they do it though. I didn't bother asking him how much that would cost me.

I bought one of those collapsible laundry hamper from a Dollar store to hold my DVDs and VHS tapes. So that's solved.

I'm also using one for my record albums as I had to move those out from under my computer table so I can stretch my legs out.

The one with the records is squarish shape and I put it in the bedroom closet. The records fit in it real good.

The one I bought today is round but everything again fits in it nicely. So I am happy.

Gutter work all but set in stone now. Will figure out for sure if it's getting done on Monday or Tuesday this Friday night. That's going to be huge. It's also going to come in at between around $600-$700 less than I figured it would, which is also really nice. All depends on how much I overbought on the returnable stuff. I'll use the extra to get some really nice gutter guards up after they're done. I'll still have time to order them before the price hike in October.

After measuring a 5th time before putting my order in and getting all of that squared away, I started tackling the mole problem. Like everything else, that's going to be a bigger job than I thought. This little shit really has been working hard. There's a whole network of tunnels down there. I'm putting a spike into them 6" apart, then putting the mole repellent directly into the holes and filling them with stones, then breaking up the tunnels in between and doing my best to fill that too. Got the back of the house done, and about half of the side. The side is probably the worst spot on my entire house. At least, I hope it is. The far side doesn't seem to have any activity at all. I'm hoping the front doesn't too, and it looks as though that may be the case. I'm also going to have to do around the garage slab. I know that there's at least some activity there. They really like working around those hard edges for some reason.

Once those gutters are up I'm going to be putting a truckload of bug poison down one last time before winter.

I'm pretty pleased with myself. They fit in the areas good and they look okay too.

That feels especially good. It was sooo much and to finally be able to get to it and know it will soon be finished is great.

Now anything else is just receipts and no rush on any of it.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

So, late last week hubby was admitted to a Covid unit thru our system's ER. He had been spiking fevers, with racking chills, profound fatigue, dry cough, and ... most worrying... a blood oxygen saturation as low as 88. He was trying to tough it out, but I called the advice nurse and was told than an osat of 93 and lower warrrants a trip to the ER, so there we went.

Fortunately, X-ray and others tests showed that he had bacterial pneumonia, and was released after a couple of stressful days on IV antibiotics listening to the people next door coughing their lungs out. I did look at his test results thru patient portal, and was impressed with HOW MANY things he was tested for! In addition to Covid, he was tested for at least five other coronaviruses, about a half-dozen forms of flu, a bunch of bacteria, Legionnaire's disease, RSV, and stuff I've forgotten. They were VERY thorough. Also, because his room was so hot (he was admitted during a heat wave) we think that the hospital had blocked the air vents to keep viruses from floating around, which makes sense. So altho being in a hospital with Covid patients sucks in all kinds of ways, the care was good and he is recovering at home, YAY!

That's why I haven't been around much. I still have a lot of things to do, so I still won't be posting much but, as always, I love to read about what and how you're doing!

Emailed my boss last week and got a reply back. Looks like I might be back to work on Friday. At least it will be something to do.

Me too!

I've heard of that side-effect.

I know my mom experienced it one of the last times she was in. We didn't have AC but she sure as shooting missed her wheelchair!
